Pliny the Elder
23 – 79 C.E.
Pliny the Elder (23–79 C.E.), or Gaius Plinius Secundus, an uncle of Pliny the Younger, a Roman equestrian, and a commander of the fleet at Misenum, was the author of the thirty-seven-book Naturalis historia, an encyclopedic anthology of all natural subjects studied in late antiquity, including fauna, flora, and geography among others. Of special interest is his description of Palestine and mention of the Essenes (Nat. 5.17.4).
