Rephaim

Rephaim is used in ancient Near Eastern and biblical texts to describe an ancient group associated with exceptional stature, power, or renown and relatedly, the dead who reside in the underworld. In narrative settings, the term evokes earlier inhabitants of the land remembered through conflict and displacement and in poetic and wisdom literature, Rephaim names the silent, weakened dead who exist apart from the world of the living. Together, these uses connect the Rephaim with antiquity, loss of power, and removal from active life, whether remembered as legendary figures or as spirits beyond human society.
