Kerygma
Kerygma is a term used for a message that is publicly proclaimed and intended to elicit response. Derived from a Greek word meaning “proclamation” or “heralded announcement,” it emphasizes the act of declaring something as true rather than analyzing or defending it. In early Christian contexts, kerygma names the basic announcement about Jesus that was preached to audiences, often in missionary or public settings. This form of communication assumes listeners are being addressed directly and urgently, with the goal of persuasion or commitment. Detailed teaching, interpretation, and reflection develop later from this initial proclaimed message.
