About This Tag

Ancient Near Eastern and Greek art and literature filled the divine and demonic world with composite beings that combined human and animal parts or fused several animals into a single body. Winged bulls and lions with human heads guarded palace gates, scorpion-men kept watch over the mountain passes, and gods spawned broods of horned serpents, fish-men, and bull-men to fight their battles. The Hebrew Bible and Septuagint inherit this imagery, and later Jewish and Christian traditions continued to imagine the heavenly and monstrous realms through the same hybrid forms.
