Hillel the Elder and Shammai were foundational Jewish sages of the late Second Temple period whose opposing legal and ethical methodologies established the primary schools of Pharisaic and Rabbinic thought (Bet Hillel and Bet Shammai). Hillel was renowned for his humility, emphasis on peace, love of humanity, and summary of the Torah via the Golden Rule, while Shammai stressed rigorous legal adherence, discipline, and action. Their famous debates, spanning ethics, Sabbath rules, and divorce, profoundly shaped Rabbinic Judaism and closely parallel teachings across early Jewish and Christian texts. Many of the conversations and debates between Jesus and other Pharisees in the Gospels reflect the same debates first started by Hillel and Shammai.
