Burnt Offerings

Chapter 1

1 And the Lord called to Moses, and the Lord spoke with him from the Tent of Meeting, saying: 2 Speak with the sons of Israel, and say to them: When one of you brings an offering before the Lord of the cattle, of oxen or of sheep, you shall offer your offerings. 3 If his offering is a burnt offering from the cattle, it shall be a male, unblemished; he shall offer him at the door of the Tent of Meeting; he shall offer him for acceptance before the Lord. 4 And he shall lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering, so that it may be accepted on his behalf to make atonement for him. 5 And he shall slaughter the young bull before the Lord; and the sons of Aaron the priest shall bring the blood, and sprinkle the blood all around the altar which is at the door of the Tent of Meeting. 6 And he shall remove the skin of the burnt offering, and cut it into pieces. 7 And the sons of Aaron the priest shall put fire on the altar, and lay the wood in order on the fire. 8 And the priests, the sons of Aaron, shall arrange the limbs and the head and the fat on the wood on the fire which is on the altar. 9 But he shall wash its internal organs and legs with water; and the priest shall burn all of it on the altar as an entire burnt offering, an offering to be received with acceptance before the Lord. 10 And if his offering is from the flock, of the sheep or the young of the goats for a burnt offering, he shall bring an unblemished male. 11 And he shall slaughter it at the north side of the altar before the Lord; and the priests the sons of Aaron shall sprinkle his blood all around the altar. 12 And he shall cut it into pieces, with its head and its feet; and the priest shall lay them on the wood which is on the fire on the altar. 13 But he shall wash the internal organs and the legs with water, and the priest shall bring all of it and burn it on the altar: it is a whole burnt offering, an offering to be received with acceptance before the Lord. 14 But if the burnt offering of his offering before the Lord is from birds, he shall bring his offering from turtledoves or young pigeons. 15 And the priest shall offer it on the altar, and wring off its head, and burn it on the altar, and pour its blood by the side of the altar: 16 and he shall remove its crop with its food, and throw it on the east side of the altar, at the place where they empty the ashes. 17 And he shall take it apart by its wings, but not separate it completely; and the priest shall burn it at the altar on the wood that is on the fire: it is a burnt offering, an offering that shall be received with acceptance before the Lord.

Mincha Offerings

Chapter 2

1 But if a man brings an offering of a mincha before the Lord, his offering shall be of flour, and he shall pour oil on it, and put frankincense on it, 2 and bring it to the priests the sons of Aaron; and the priest shall take from it his handful of the flour with its oil, and all its frankincense, and burn the memorial of it at the altar; an offering to be received with favor before the Lord. 3 And what remains of the mincha shall be Aaron's and his sons'; it is most holy among the offerings of the Lord. 4 And when you bring the offering of a mincha baked in the oven, it shall be of unleavened flour cakes mixed with oil, with unleavened wafers spread with oil. 5 And if the mincha is prepared in a pan, your offering shall be of flour mixed with oil; it shall be unleavened. 6 And you shall break it in pieces, and pour oil on it; it is a mincha. 7 But if your offering is a mincha from the griddle, you shall make it of flour with oil. 8 And you shall bring the mincha made from these before the Lord, and present it to the priest, and he will offer it at the altar. 9 And the priest shall separate its memorial from the mincha, and burn an offering on the altar to be received with favor before the Lord. 10 And what remains of the mincha shall be Aaron's and his sons': it is most holy among the offerings of the Lord. 11 No mincha which you offer before the Lord may be made with leaven; for you shall burn no leaven or honey with any offering before the Lord. 12 In the offering of first fruits you may offer them before the Lord, but not burn them at the altar, that they may be accepted with favor. 13 And you shall season every offering of your mincha with salt; and you may not leave out the salt of the covenant of your God from your mincha; with every offering you shall offer salt. 14 And when you offer the mincha of first fruits before the Lord, you shall offer fresh ears dried over a fire, crushed and soft, as the mincha of your firstfruits. 15 And you shall put oil on it, and lay frankincense on it: it is a mincha; 16 and the priest shall burn its memorial of its broken grain and of its oil with all the frankincense, an offering before the Lord.

Holy Sacrifices

Chapter 3

1 And if his offering is a holy sacrifice from cattle, whether male or female, he shall offer it unblemished before the Lord. 2 And he shall lay his hand on the head of his offering at the door of the Tent of Meeting; and the priests the sons of Aaron shall sprinkle the blood all around the altar. 3 And from the offering of the holy sacrifice, he shall offer the fat that covers the internal organs, all the fat that is on the internal organs, 4 and the two kidneys and the fat which is on them on the sides, and he shall remove the covering that is on the liver with the kidneys. 5 And the sons of Aaron shall burn it at the altar, with the burnt offering which is on the wood on the fire, an offering to be received with grace before the Lord. 6 But if his offering of a holy sacrifice before the Lord is from the flock, whether male or female, he shall offer it unblemished. 7 If his offering is a lamb, he shall present it before the Lord, 8 and lay his hand on the head of his offering, and slaughter it before the Tent of Meeting; and the sons of Aaron shall sprinkle its blood on the altar all around. 9 And from his offering of the holy sacrifice before the Lord he shall remove its fat, the entire tail close to the backbone; the fat which covers the internal organs, 10 even all the fat which is on the internal organs, and the two kidneys and the fat which is on them on the sides, and he shall remove the covering that is over the liver with the kidneys; 11 and the priest shall burn it at the altar; it is the food of an offering before the Lord. 12 But if his offering is from the young goats, he shall present it before the Lord, 13 and lay his hand on its head, and slaughter it before the Tent of Meeting; and the sons of Aaron shall sprinkle its blood on the altar all around. 14 And of his offering he shall offer as an offering before the Lord the fat which covers the internal organs, 15 and all the fat which is on the internal organs, and the two kidneys, and the fat which is on them on the sides; but he shall remove the covering that is over the liver with the kidneys. 16 And the priest shall burn them at the altar: it is the food of an offering to be received with acceptance; all the fat shall be offered before the Lord. 17 It is an everlasting statute for your generations, and in all the places where you live, that neither the fat nor the blood shall be eaten.

Offerings for Unintentional Sins

Chapter 4

1 The Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 2 Speak to the Israelites and tell them: When a person sins unintentionally against any of the Lord's commandments by doing something that should not be done: 3 If the anointed priest sins, bringing guilt upon the people, he must bring before the Lord a young bull without defect as a sin offering for the sin he has committed. 4 He shall bring the bull to the entrance of the Tent of Meeting before the Lord, lay his hand on the bull's head, and slaughter it before the Lord. 5 The anointed priest shall take some of the bull's blood and bring it into the Tent of Meeting. 6 The priest shall dip his finger in the blood and sprinkle some of it seven times before the Lord in front of the sanctuary curtain. 7 The priest shall put some of the blood on the horns of the altar of fragrant incense before the Lord in the Tent of Meeting, and he shall pour out the rest of the bull's blood at the base of the altar of burnt offering at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting. 8 He shall remove all the fat from the bull of the sin offering—the fat that covers the internal organs and all the fat that is connected to them, 9 both kidneys with the fat on them near the loins, and the long lobe of the liver, which he shall remove with the kidneys— 10 just as the fat is removed from the ox sacrificed as a holy sacrifice. Then the priest shall burn them on the altar of burnt offering. 11 But the hide of the bull and all its flesh, as well as the head, legs, internal organs, and intestines, 12 the entire bull must be taken outside the camp to a clean place where the ashes are poured out, and burned there in a wood fire at the ash heap. 13 If the whole community of Israel sins unintentionally and does what is forbidden in any of the Lord's commands, even though the community is unaware of the matter, they are guilty. 14 When they become aware of the sin they have committed, the assembly must bring a young bull as a sin offering and present it before the Tent of Meeting. 15 The elders of the community shall lay their hands on the bull's head before the Lord, and it shall be slaughtered before the Lord. 16 Then the anointed priest shall take some of the bull's blood into the Tent of Meeting, 17 and he shall dip his finger in the blood and sprinkle it seven times before the Lord in front of the curtain. 18 He shall put some of the blood on the horns of the altar that is before the Lord in the Tent of Meeting, and pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar of burnt offering at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting. 19 He shall remove all the fat from it and burn it on the altar. 20 He shall do with this bull just as he did with the bull of the sin offering. In this way, the priest will make atonement for the people, and they will be forgiven. 21 He shall then take the bull outside the camp and burn it as he burned the first bull. This is the sin offering for the assembly. 22 If a leader sins unintentionally and does what is forbidden in any of the commands of the Lord his God, he is guilty. 23 When he becomes aware of the sin he has committed, he must bring as his offering a male goat without defect. 24 He shall lay his hand on the goat's head and slaughter it at the place where the burnt offering is slaughtered before the Lord. It is a sin offering. 25 The priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering and pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar of burnt offering. 26 He shall burn all the fat on the altar as he burned the fat of the holy sacrifices. In this way, the priest will make atonement for the leader's sin, and he will be forgiven. 27 If a member of the community sins unintentionally by doing something forbidden in any of the Lord's commands, he is guilty. 28 When he becomes aware of the sin he has committed, he must bring as his offering a female goat without defect for the sin he has committed. 29 He is to lay his hand on the head of the sin offering and slaughter it at the place of the burnt offering. 30 Then the priest shall take some of the blood with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering and pour out all the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. 31 He shall remove all the fat, just as the fat was removed from the holy sacrifices, and the priest shall burn it on the altar to be accepted with favor before the Lord. In this way, the priest will make atonement for them, and they will be forgiven. 32 If someone brings a lamb as their sin offering, they are to bring a female without defect. 33 They are to lay their hand on its head and slaughter it at the place where the burnt offering is slaughtered. 34 The priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offering and pour out all the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. 35 He shall remove all the fat, just as the fat was removed from the lamb of the holy sacrifices, and the priest shall burn it on the altar on top of the offerings before the Lord. In this way, the priest will make atonement for the sin they have committed, and they will be forgiven.

Sins Requiring an Offering

Chapter 5

1 And if a man sins by hearing a demand to testify under oath as a witness to something he has seen or knows, but does not disclose it, he shall bear his sin. 2 Or if a man has touched anything unclean, whether the carcass of an unclean beast, or the carcass of unclean cattle, or the carcass of an unclean reptile, and it is hidden from him, he shall be defiled and guilty. 3 Or if he touches the uncleanness of a man, any uncleanness which defiles him, and it is hidden from him; but he later becomes aware of it and is guilty; 4 or if a man makes an affirmation, declaring with his lips, for evil or for good, according to whatever the man shall declare by affirmation, and the truth is hidden from him, and he later learns of it, he is guilty of one of these. 5 And it shall be that when he knows that he is guilty in one of these things he shall confess that he has sinned in this way; 6 and shall bring his sin offering before the Lord for the sin he has committed; a female lamb from the flock, or a young goat, for a sin offering; and the priest shall atone for him and for his sin. 7 But if he cannot afford a lamb, let him bring for the sin he has committed two turtledoves, or two young pigeons before the Lord, one for the sin offering, and one for the burnt sacrifice. 8 And he shall bring them to the priest, and he shall offer the sin offering first, and wring off its head near to the spine, but he shall not separate the bird completely. 9 And he shall sprinkle the blood of the sin offering on the side of the altar, and pour out the remainder of the blood at the base of the altar; it is a sin offering. 10 And he shall make the second a burnt sacrifice, according to the prescribed procedure; and the priest shall make atonement for the sin he has committed, and he shall be forgiven. 11 But if he cannot afford two turtledoves or a pair of young pigeons, he shall bring, as his offering for the sin he has committed, the tenth of three seahs of flour for a sin offering; he shall not put oil on it, nor put frankincense on it, for it is a sin offering. 12 And he shall bring it to the priest, and the priest shall take a handful of it as the memorial of it, and burn it at the altar with the offerings of the Lord: it is a sin offering. 13 And the priest shall make atonement for him, for the sin he has committed in any one of these things, and he shall be forgiven: and it shall belong to the priest, like the mincha.

Restitution and Trespass Offerings

14 And the Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 15 When a man has acted unfaithfully and sinned unintentionally concerning things consecrated to the Lord, he shall bring for his trespass offering before the Lord a ram without blemish from the flock by its value in silver shekels, in the shekel of the sanctuary, for a trespass offering. 16 And he shall repay what he has withheld from the holy thing, and add a fifth to it, and give it to the priest; and the priest shall make atonement for him with the ram of the trespass offering, and he shall be forgiven. 17 And if a man sins and violates any of the Lord's commandments by doing what should not be done, without knowing it, and incurs guilt, he shall bear his sin. 18 But he shall bring a lamb unblemished from the flock according to the valuation for a trespass offering to the priest; and the priest shall atone for his error which he committed unintentionally, and he shall be forgiven. 19 It is an asham for the offenses he has committed; he shall offer the asham before the Lord. 20 And the Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 21 If a man sins and acts deceitfully before the Lord, and deals dishonestly with his neighbor over a deposit, a partnership of hands, robbery, or something taken from his neighbor by force; 22 or if he has found something lost and denies it, and swears falsely, in any of these ways in which a man acts and sins; 23 it shall be that when he has committed an offense and become guilty, he shall return what he has stolen, or taken away by violence, or the deposit which was deposited with him, or the lost thing that he had found: 24 or anything about which he had sworn falsely, he shall repay the principal, and add one fifth to it; he shall give it to its owner on the day of his guilt offering. 25 And he shall bring his trespass offering before the Lord to the priest: a ram unblemished from the flock according to the valuation for the trespass offering. 26 And the priest shall make atonement for him before the Lord, and he shall be forgiven for any one of all these in which he may have acted and incurred guilt.

Priestly Duties and Offerings

Chapter 6

1 And the Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 2 Instruct Aaron and his sons, saying: This is the law of the Burnt Offering. The burnt offering shall remain burning on the altar all night until morning, and the fire of the altar shall be burning in it. 3 And the priest shall dress himself with clothes of linen, and wear linen undergarments next to his body; and he shall remove the ashes left by the fire that consumed the burnt offering on the altar, and set them beside the altar. 4 And he shall take off his clothes, and dress himself with other garments, and carry the ashes outside the camp to a clean place. 5 But the fire on the altar shall be burning on it, and never be extinguished; and the priest shall burn wood on it every morning, and lay the burnt offering in order on it, and burn on it the fat of the holy offerings. 6 The fire shall be burning continually on the altar, it shall not be extinguished. 7 And this is the law of the Mincha which the sons of Aaron shall offer in the presence of the Lord before the altar. 8 And he shall take from it a handful of the flour of the mincha and of its oil, and all the frankincense that is on the mincha, and burn its memorial portion on the altar to be accepted with favor before the Lord. 9 And Aaron and his sons may eat the rest of it. It shall be eaten unleavened in the holy place; they shall eat it in the courtyard of the Tent of Meeting. 10 It shall not be baked with leaven. I have given it as their portion of My offerings; it is most sacred, as the sin offering and as the trespass offering. 11 All the males of the children of Aaron may eat it. This is an everlasting statute for your generations concerning the offerings of the Lord: everyone who touches them shall be holy. 12 And the Lord spoke with Moses, saying, 13 This is the offering of Aaron and his sons which they shall present before the Lord on the day when they anoint him. It shall be a tenth of three seahs of flour as a regular mincha, half in the morning and half in the evening. 14 It shall be made in a pan with oil; it shall be brought while soft, a baked mincha offered in pieces to be accepted with favor before the Lord. 15 And the priest from among his sons who is anointed in his place shall prepare it. This is an everlasting statute before the Lord: it shall be burned entirely, 16 and every mincha of the priest shall be entirely burned; it is not to be eaten. 17 And the Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 18 Speak with Aaron and with his sons, saying, This is the law of the sin offering: In the place where the burnt offering is killed, the sin offering shall be killed before the Lord; it is most sacred. 19 The priest who makes atonement with its blood shall eat it; in the holy place it shall be eaten, in the court of the Tent of Meeting. 20 Everyone who touches its meat must be holy. And if he drops some of its blood on a garment, the stained part shall be purified in the holy place. 21 But the clay pot in which it was boiled shall be broken; and if it is boiled in a bronze pot, it shall be scoured and washed in water. 22 Any man of the priests may eat of it: it is most sacred. 23 But no sin offering whose blood is brought into the Tent of Meeting to make atonement in the sanctuary may be eaten, but shall be burned with fire.

Offerings and the Priests' Share

Chapter 7

1 And this is the law of the Trespass Offering; it is most holy. 2 In the place where they kill the burnt offering, they shall kill the trespass offering and sprinkle its blood all around the altar. 3 All the fat shall be offered, including the tail and the fat that covers the internal organs. 4 The two kidneys and the fat on them, along with the fat on the sides and the covering over the liver, with the kidneys, shall be removed. 5 The priest shall burn them on the altar as an offering before the Lord; it is a trespass offering. 6 Every male among the priests may eat it in the holy place; it is most sacred. 7 The same law applies to both the sin offering and the trespass offering; the priest who makes atonement with it shall have it. 8 When the priest offers a person’s burnt sacrifice, the skin of the sacrifice that the priest offers shall belong to him. 9 Every grain offering baked in an oven, or cooked in a pan or on a griddle, shall belong to the priest who offers it. 10 Every grain offering, whether mixed with oil or dry, shall be shared equally among all the sons of Aaron. 11 This is the law of the Holy Sacrifice that one may offer before the Lord. 12 If it is offered as a thanksgiving, then he shall offer unleavened cakes mixed with oil, unleavened wafers anointed with oil, and cakes of fine flour mixed with oil. 13 With the cakes, he shall present leavened bread as his offering of thanksgiving. 14 From it, he shall offer one out of each offering as a contribution before the Lord; it shall belong to the priest who sprinkles the blood of the Holy Sacrifice. 15 The meat of his holy thanksgiving sacrifice shall be eaten on the day it is offered; none of it shall be left until the morning. 16 If the sacrifice of his offering is a vow or a voluntary offering, it may be eaten the same day that he offers his sacrifice, and what remains of it may be eaten on the next day. 17 But what remains of the flesh of the sacrifice on the third day shall be burned with fire. 18 If any of the flesh of the sacrifice is eaten on the third day, it will not be accepted, nor will it be credited to the one who offered it; it will be considered an abomination, and the person who eats of it shall bear their guilt. 19 If the flesh that is consecrated touches anything unclean, it shall not be eaten but shall be burned with fire. Anyone who is ceremonially clean may eat the consecrated flesh. 20 But anyone who is unclean and eats the flesh of the sacrifices that are consecrated before the Lord, that person shall be cut off from their people. 21 Anyone who touches anything unclean, whether human uncleanness or an unclean animal or any unclean creature, and then eats of the flesh of the sacrifices that are consecrated before the Lord, that person shall be cut off from their people.

Fat, Blood, and Sacred Portions

22 The Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 23 Speak to the Israelites, saying: You shall not eat any of the fat of oxen, sheep, or goats. 24 The fat of a dead animal and the fat of an animal torn by wild beasts may be used in any other way, but you must not eat it. 25 Anyone who eats the fat of an animal from which an offering may be made before the Lord, that person shall be cut off from their people. 26 You must not eat any blood, whether from birds or animals, in any of your settlements. 27 Anyone who eats any blood, that person shall be cut off from their people. 28 The Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 29 Speak to the Israelites, saying: Whoever offers their Holy Sacrifice before the Lord shall bring part of it as their offering before the Lord. 30 Their own hands shall bring the offerings before the Lord; they shall bring the fat along with the breast, so that the breast may be lifted as a lifted offering before the Lord. 31 The priest shall burn the fat on the altar, but the breast shall belong to Aaron and his sons. 32 You shall give the right thigh from your Holy Sacrifices as a contribution to the priest. 33 The son of Aaron who offers the blood and the fat of the Holy Sacrifices shall have the right thigh as his portion. 34 For I have taken the breast of the lifted offering and the contribution thigh from the Israelites out of their Holy Sacrifices and have given them to Aaron the priest and his sons as their perpetual share from the Israelites. 35 This is the portion of the anointing of Aaron and the anointing of his sons from the offerings before the Lord, on the day when they were presented to serve before the Lord as priests. 36 The Lord commanded the Israelites to give this to them on the day that they were anointed. It is a perpetual share for their generations. 37 This is the law of the burnt offering, the grain offering, the sin offering, the trespass offering, the ordination offering, and the Holy Sacrifice, 38 which the Lord commanded Moses on Mount Sinai on the day he commanded the Israelites to bring their offerings before the Lord in the wilderness of Sinai.

The Consecration of Aaron and His Sons

Chapter 8

1 And the Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 2 Bring Aaron near, and his sons with him, along with the garments, the anointing oil, the bull for the sin offering, the two rams, and the basket of unleavened bread; 3 and let the entire congregation gather at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting. 4 Moses did as the Lord commanded him, and the congregation gathered at the entrance of the Tent of Meeting. 5 Moses said to the congregation, This is what the Lord has commanded to be done. 6 Moses brought Aaron and his sons near, and washed them with water; 7 He put the tunic on Aaron, tied the sash around him, clothed him with the robe, and put the ephod on him, fastening it with the ephod’s waistband and securing it; 8 He placed the breastpiece on him, and in the breastpiece he put the Urim and Thummim. 9 He placed the turban on his head and attached the gold plate, the holy crown, on the front of the turban, as the Lord had commanded Moses. 10 Moses took the anointing oil and anointed the tabernacle and everything in it, and so consecrated them. 11 He sprinkled some of the oil on the altar seven times, anointing the altar and all its utensils, as well as the basin and its stand, to consecrate them. 12 He poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head and anointed him to consecrate him. 13 Moses then brought Aaron’s sons forward, dressed them in tunics, tied sashes around them, and fastened caps on them, as the Lord had commanded Moses. 14 He brought the bull for the sin offering, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on its head. 15 Moses slaughtered the bull, took some of the blood, and put it on all the horns of the altar with his finger, purifying the altar. He poured out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar and consecrated it to make atonement for it. 16 Moses took all the fat around the internal organs, the long lobe of the liver, both kidneys and their fat, and burned it on the altar. 17 But the bull, its hide, its flesh, and its dung, he burned outside the camp, as the Lord commanded Moses. 18 Then he brought the ram for the burnt offering, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on its head. 19 Moses slaughtered the ram and sprinkled the blood against the altar on all sides. 20 He cut the ram into pieces and burned the head, the pieces, and the fat. 21 He washed the internal organs and the legs with water and burned the whole ram on the altar as a burnt offering, an offering to be accepted with favor before the Lord, as the Lord commanded Moses. 22 Moses then brought the second ram, the ram for the ordination, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on its head. 23 Moses slaughtered the ram and took some of its blood and put it on the lobe of Aaron’s right ear, on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot. 24 Moses also brought Aaron’s sons forward and put some of the blood on the lobes of their right ears, on the thumbs of their right hands, and on the big toes of their right feet. Then he sprinkled the blood against the altar on all sides. 25 He took the fat, the fat tail, all the fat around the internal organs, the long lobe of the liver, both kidneys and their fat, and the right thigh. 26 From the basket of bread made without yeast, which was before the Lord, he took one loaf, one cake made with oil, and one wafer, and placed them on the fat portions and on the right thigh. 27 He put all these in the hands of Aaron and his sons and lifted them before the Lord as a lifted offering. 28 Then Moses took them from their hands and burned them on the altar on top of the burnt offering as an ordination offering, an offering to be accepted with favor before the Lord. 29 He also took the breast, Moses’ share of the ordination ram, and lifted it before the Lord as a lifted offering, as the Lord commanded Moses. 30 Moses then took some of the anointing oil and some of the blood from the altar and sprinkled them on Aaron and his garments and on his sons and their garments. So he consecrated Aaron and his garments and his sons and their garments. 31 Moses said to Aaron and his sons, Cook the meat at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting and eat it there with the bread from the basket of ordination offerings, as I commanded, saying, Aaron and his sons are to eat it. 32 Then burn up the rest of the meat and the bread. 33 Do not leave the entrance to the Tent of Meeting for seven days, until the days of your ordination are completed; for your ordination will last seven days. 34 What has been done today was commanded by the Lord to make atonement for you. 35 You must stay at the entrance to the Tent of Meeting day and night for seven days and do what the Memra of the Lord requires, so you will not die; for that is what I have been commanded. 36 So Aaron and his sons did everything the Lord commanded through Moses.

Priestly Service Begins

Chapter 9

1 And on the eighth day Moses called Aaron and his sons and the elders of Israel. 2 And he said to Aaron, Take for yourself a calf, a young bull from the herd, for a sin offering, and a ram for a burnt offering unblemished, and offer them before the Lord. 3 And he spoke with the sons of Israel, saying, Take a young goat for a sin offering, and a calf, and a year-old lamb, unblemished, for a burnt offering; and a bull and a ram for a holy offering, 4 to sacrifice before the Lord; and a mincha of flour sprinkled with oil: for today the glory of the Lord will be revealed to you. 5 And they brought what Moses had commanded before the Tent of Meeting, and all the congregation approached and stood before the Lord. 6 And Moses said, This is the thing that the Lord has commanded to be done, and the glory of the Lord shall be revealed to you. 7 And Moses said to Aaron, Approach the altar, and make your sin offering and your burnt sacrifice, and make atonement for yourself and for the people, and perform the offering of the people, and make atonement for them, as the Lord commanded. 8 And Aaron drew near to the altar, and slaughtered the calf for the sin offering for himself. 9 And the sons of Aaron brought the blood to him, and he dipped his finger in the blood, and put it on the horns of the altar, and poured out the blood at the base of the altar. 10 But he burned the fat, the kidneys, and the covering of the liver of the sin offering on the altar, as the Lord commanded Moses. 11 And he burned the meat and the skin in the fire outside the camp. 12 And he killed the whole burnt offering; and the sons of Aaron brought the blood to him, and he sprinkled it all around the altar. 13 And they brought to him the whole burnt offering in pieces with the head, and he burned it on the altar. 14 And he washed the internal organs and the legs, and burned them with the offering at the altar. 15 And he brought the offering of the people, and took the young goat for the sin offering of the people, and killed it, and made atonement with its blood, as before. 16 And he brought the whole burnt offering, and offered it according to the prescribed procedure. 17 And he took the mincha, and filled his hand with it, and burned it on the altar beside the morning sacrifice. 18 And he slaughtered the bull and the ram for the holy offerings of the people; and the sons of Aaron brought the blood to him, and he sprinkled the blood all around the altar. 19 Also the fats of the bull and of the ram, the tail, and the covering of the internal organs, with the kidneys, and the covering of the liver; 20 and they placed the fats on the breast, and burned the fats at the altar. 21 And Aaron lifted the breast with the right shoulder as a lifted offering before the Lord, as the Lord commanded Moses. 22 And Aaron lifted up his hands toward the people and blessed them, and came down from performing the sin offering, and the burnt sacrifice, and the holy offerings. 23 And Moses and Aaron entered the Tent of Meeting, and came out and blessed the people; and the glory of the Lord was revealed to all the people: 24 and fire came out from before the Lord, and consumed on the altar the burnt sacrifice and the fats: and all the people saw, and gave praise, and fell on their faces.

The Deaths of Nadab and Abihu

Chapter 10

1 But the sons of Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, each took his fire pan and put fire in them, and put fragrant incense on the fire, and offered before the Lord unauthorized fire which He had not commanded them. 2 And fire came out from before the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord. 3 And Moses said to Aaron, This is what the Lord spoke, saying, Among those who approach Me I will be sanctified, and I will be glorified before all the people. And Aaron was silent. 4 And Moses called to Mishael and to Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel the uncle of Aaron, and said to them, Come near, and carry your relatives from before the sanctuary outside the camp. 5 And they came near, and carried them in their clothes out of the camp, as Moses had spoken. 6 And Moses said to Aaron and to Eleazar and to Ithamar his sons, Do not let your hair grow long or tear your clothes, so that you do not die and bring anger on all the congregation; but let your brothers and all the house of Israel mourn the burning which the Lord has kindled; 7 and do not go out from the door of the Tent of Meeting, so that you do not die; for the anointing oil of the Lord is on you. And they did according to the word of Moses.

Priestly Responsibilities

8 And the Lord spoke with Aaron, saying: 9 Do not drink wine or strong drink, neither you nor your sons with you, when you enter into the Tent of Meeting, so that you do not die. It is an everlasting statute for your generations, 10 to distinguish between the holy and the common, and between the unclean and the clean; 11 and so that you may teach the sons of Israel all the statutes which the Lord has spoken to them through Moses. 12 And Moses spoke with Aaron and with Eleazar and with Ithamar his sons who were left: Take the mincha which remains from the offerings of the Lord, and eat it unleavened at the side of the altar, because it is most holy. 13 It shall be eaten in the holy place; for it is your portion, and the portion of your sons of the offerings of the Lord; for that is what I have been commanded. 14 But you and your sons and daughters may eat the breast of the uplifting and the shoulder of the separation in any clean place; for it is your portion, and the portion of your sons, which has been given of the hallowed sacrifices of the children of Israel. 15 They will bring the shoulder of the separation and the breast of the uplifting with the offering of fat to lift as a lifted offering before the Lord: and they shall be yours and your sons' with you by an everlasting statute, as the Lord has commanded. 16 But Moses asked about the goat of the sin offering; and, look, it had been burned; and he was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar the sons of Aaron who were left, saying: 17 Why have you not eaten of the sin offering in the holy place, because it is most holy; and He has given it to you to obtain forgiveness for the sin of the congregation to make atonement for them before the Lord? 18 Look, some of its blood was not brought in within the sanctuary: you should certainly have eaten it in the holy place, as I had commanded. 19 And Aaron said to Moses, Look, today they have brought their sin offering and their burnt offering before the Lord; but such grief has come upon me. If I had eaten of the sin offering today, would it have been right before the Lord? 20 And Moses heard, and it was pleasing in his eyes.

Animals, Food, and Ritual Purity

Chapter 11

1 And the Lord spoke with Moses and to Aaron, saying to them: 2 Speak with the children of Israel, saying: These are the animals which you may eat of all the beasts which are on the earth. 3 You may eat any animal among the cattle whose hoof is split completely and that chews the cud. 4 But you shall not eat these among the animals that chew the cud or have split hooves: the camel, because it chews the cud, but does not have a split hoof, it is unclean to you. 5 And the hyrax, because it chews the cud, but does not have a split hoof, is unclean to you. 6 And the hare, because it chews the cud, but does not have a split hoof, shall be unclean to you. 7 And the pig, because it has a completely split hoof but does not chew the cud, it shall be unclean to you. 8 You shall neither eat their flesh nor touch their carcasses; they are unclean to you. 9 Of everything in the waters, you may eat anything with fins and scales, whether in the seas or in the rivers. 10 But anything that does not have both fins and scales in the seas and in the rivers, including every such creeping creature of the waters, and every living animal in the waters, shall be to you an abomination. 11 They shall be an abomination to you; you shall not eat their meat, and you shall regard their carcasses as detestable; 12 anything that does not have both fins and scales in the waters is to be an abomination to you. 13 And you shall regard these as detestable among the birds; you shall not eat them, they are an abomination: the eagle, and the sea eagle, and the osprey, 14 and the kite, and the vulture, according to its kind; 15 and every raven according to its kind; 16 and the ostrich, and the night bird, and the gull, and the hawk, according to its kind; 17 and the owl, and the diving bird, and the ibis, 18 and the swan, and the green bird, and the stork, 19 and the magpie, according to its kind, and the mountain cock, and the bat. 20 Every winged thing that creeps or walks on four legs, is an abomination to you. 21 Yet you may eat these among the winged creeping creature that walks on four legs and has joints above its feet with which to leap on the ground. 22 You may eat these, the locust according to its kind, and the bald locust, and the serpent-killer according to its kind, and the grasshopper according to its kind; 23 but every other winged creeping creature having four feet is to be an abomination to you. 24 And by these you will be unclean; everyone who touches their carcasses shall be unclean until the evening. 25 And whoever carries a carcass of them, shall wash his clothes and be unclean until the evening; 26 every beast that splits the hoof, but does not have a fully split hoof, and that does not chew the cud, is to be unclean to you; whoever touches them shall be unclean. 27 And every animal that walks on its paws, of all beasts that walk on four legs, shall be unclean to you; whoever touches their carcasses shall be unclean until the evening. 28 And whoever carries their carcass shall wash his clothes and be unclean until the evening; to you they are unclean. 29 And these shall be unclean to you among the creeping creatures that move on the ground: the weasel, and the mouse, and the crocodile according to its kind, 30 and the field mouse, and the chameleon, and the newt, and the lizard, and the mole. 31 These are unclean to you of all that creep; everyone who touches them when they are dead shall be unclean until evening. 32 And anything on which one of them falls when dead shall be unclean; whether a vessel of wood, or clothing, or skin, or sack, anything used for work, must be put into water, and it shall be unclean until the evening, and must be purified. 33 If one of them falls into a clay pot, everything inside it is polluted, and you shall break the pot. 34 Any food for eating, on which water from such a vessel is poured, shall be unclean, and any drink in any such vessel shall be unclean. 35 And anything on which a part of their dead bodies may have fallen shall be unclean; oven or cooking pan, they shall be broken, they are unclean and shall be unclean to you. 36 Nevertheless, a spring or a pit where water collects, into which they may have fallen, shall be clean; but he who touches their dead bodies shall be unclean. 37 And if a part of their carcass falls on any seed intended for sowing, it is clean; 38 but if water is put on the seed, and a part of their carcass falls on it, it is unclean to you. 39 And if any animal from the cattle you may eat dies, whoever touches its carcass shall be unclean until the evening. 40 And he who eats from its carcass shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the evening. And he who may carry its carcass shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the evening. 41 And every creeping creature that moves on the ground is abominable, it shall not be eaten. 42 You shall not eat anything that moves on its belly, walks on four legs, or has many feet, among all the creeping creatures that move on the ground, for they are an abomination. 43 You shall not make yourselves abominable by any creeping creature that moves, nor make yourselves unclean, nor be polluted by them, so that you do not remain unclean because of them. 44 For I am the Lord your God; sanctify yourselves and be holy, for I am Holy; so that you do not contaminate your souls with any creeping creature that moves on the ground; 45 for I am the Lord who brought you up from the land of Egypt to be your God; and you shall be holy, for I am Holy. 46 This is the law of the cattle, and of the birds, and of every living animal that moves in the waters, and of every living thing that moves on the ground, 47 for making a distinction between the unclean and the clean, between the animal that may be eaten, and the animal that may not be eaten.

Purification after Childbirth

Chapter 12

1 And the Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 2 Speak with the children of Israel, saying: A woman, when she has conceived and borne a male child, shall be unclean seven days; according to the days for the removal of her uncleanness, she shall be unclean. 3 And on the eighth day he shall be circumcised in the flesh of his foreskin; 4 and she shall continue thirty-three days in the purification of blood; she may not touch any sacred thing or come into the sanctuary, until the days of her purification are completed. 5 But if she bears a female child, she shall be unclean fourteen days, according to her separation; and she will remain sixty-six days for the purification of the blood. 6 And when the days of her purification are complete, for the son or for the daughter, let her bring a year-old lamb for a burnt offering, and a young pigeon or a turtledove for a sin offering, to the door of the Tent of Meeting, to the priest, 7 who shall offer it before the Lord, and make atonement for her, and she shall be cleansed from the uncleanness of her blood. This is the law for her who bears male or female. 8 But if she cannot afford a lamb, let her take two turtledoves, or two young pigeons; one for the burnt offering, and the other for the sin offering, and the priest shall make atonement for her, and she shall be clean.

Examining Afflictions

Chapter 13

1 And the Lord spoke with Moses and with Aaron, saying: 2 A man who has a depression, a scab, or a bright spot on his skin that develops into an affliction requiring isolation shall be brought to Aaron the priest, or to one of his sons the priests. 3 And the priest shall examine the plague in the skin of the flesh, and if the hair in the affected spot has turned white, and the appearance of the plague is deeper than the skin of his flesh, it is the lesion requiring isolation; and the priest shall inspect him and declare him unclean. 4 But if there is a bright spot in the skin of his flesh, and it does not appear deeper than the skin, and the hair has not turned white, the priest shall isolate the affected man for seven days. 5 And on the seventh day the priest shall inspect him, and if the plague stands as it did, if the plague has not increased in the skin, let the priest isolate him for another seven days. 6 And the priest shall examine him after the second seven days; and if the plague has faded, and the plague has not spread in the skin, the priest shall declare him clean; it is a sore, and he shall wash his clothes and be clean. 7 But if the diseased spot spreads again in the skin after having been seen by the priest for his cleansing, he shall be brought a second time to the priest. 8 And if the priest examines him and sees that the sore has spread in the skin, the priest shall declare him unclean; it is the affliction requiring isolation. 9 When the lesion requiring isolation is in a man, let him be brought to the priest. 10 And the priest shall inspect him, and if the depression is white in the skin, and it has turned the hair white, and there is a sign of living tissue in the depression, 11 it is a chronic affliction requiring isolation in the skin of the flesh, and the priest shall declare him unclean, but shall not isolate him to determine his uncleanness, for he is unclean. 12 And if the affliction requiring isolation spreads in the skin, and it covers all the skin of the affected man from his head to his feet, wherever the eyes of the priest may look, 13 the priest shall observe, and if the affliction requiring isolation covers all his flesh, the affected man shall be declared clean; the whole of him is turned white, he is clean. 14 But on the day that living tissue appears in him he shall be unclean; 15 and the priest shall observe the living tissue, and declare him unclean. The living tissue is unclean, it is the affliction requiring isolation. 16 But if the living tissue turns white, he shall come to the priest; 17 and the priest shall observe, and if the plague is turned white, the priest shall declare the affected man clean; he is clean. 18 And if a man has had an ulcer on his skin and it has healed, 19 but in the place of the ulcer there appears a white depression, or a bright spot, reddish-white, let him show it to the priest, 20 and the priest shall inspect, and if the appearance of it is deeper than the skin, and the hair has turned white, the priest shall declare him unclean; it is the lesion requiring isolation increasing in the ulcer. 21 But if the priest examines it and sees that the hair is not white, and it is not lower than the skin, and it has faded, the priest shall isolate him for seven days; 22 and if it spreads in the skin, the priest shall declare him unclean; it is the plague. 23 But if the spot remains in its place, and does not spread, it is the scar of an ulcer, and the priest shall declare him clean. 24 Or, if a man has in his skin a burning wound, and there is the sign of a glowing wound whitish-red or completely white, 25 the priest shall examine it, and if the hair is white in the bright spot, and the appearance is deeper than the skin, it is an affliction requiring isolation increasing in the wound, and the priest shall declare him unclean; it is the lesion requiring isolation. 26 But if the priest examines it and sees that the hair is not white in the spot, and it is not deeper than the skin, and is fading, the priest shall isolate him for seven days. 27 And the priest shall examine him on the seventh day; if it spreads in the skin, the priest shall declare him unclean; it is the lesion requiring isolation. 28 But if the spot remains in its place, and does not spread in the skin, but has faded, it is only a burning sore, and the priest shall declare him clean, for it is the sign of an inflammation. 29 And if a man or a woman has a plague on the head, or in the beard, 30 the priest shall inspect the plague, and if the appearance is deeper than the skin, and there is in it a thin reddish hair, the priest shall declare him unclean; it is a scaly patch, it is an affliction requiring isolation in the head or the beard. 31 And if the priest examines the lesion in the scaly patch and sees that its appearance is not deeper than the skin, and the hair in it is not black, the priest shall isolate the person with the affected scaly patch for seven days. 32 And the priest shall inspect the plague on the seventh day; and if the scaly patch has not spread, and there is no reddish hair in it, and the appearance of the scaly patch is not deeper than the skin, 33 he must shave around the scaly patch; but he must not shave the spot itself; and the priest shall isolate the person with the scaly patch for another seven days. 34 And the priest shall examine the scaly patch on the seventh day, and if the scaly patch has not spread in the skin, and its appearance is not deeper than the skin, the priest shall declare him clean; and he shall wash his clothes and be clean. 35 But if the scaly patch spreads in the skin after he has been declared clean, 36 the priest shall inspect him, and if the scaly patch has spread in the skin, the priest need not look for the reddish hair; he is unclean. 37 But if the scaly patch remains as it was, and black hair has grown in it, the scaly patch has healed, he is clean, and the priest shall declare him clean. 38 And if a man or a woman has in the skin of their flesh bright white spots, 39 then the priest shall look, and if the spots in the skin of their flesh are dull white, it is a freckle growing in the skin; he is clean. 40 And if a man's hair falls out from his head, he is bald, but he is clean. 41 And if the hair of his head falls out toward his face, he is partly bald, but is clean. 42 But if in the baldness or partial baldness there is a whitish red scar, it is an affliction requiring isolation growing in the baldness or partial baldness. 43 Then the priest shall look, and if the plague spot is whitish red in the baldness or the partial baldness, as the appearance of affliction requiring isolation in the skin of the flesh, 44 the man requires isolation, he is unclean; and the priest shall certainly declare him unclean; his plague is in his head. 45 And the person requiring isolation who has the affliction shall have his clothes torn, and his head bared; and, like the mourner, he shall be covered up to his lip, and shall cry: Do not become unclean! Do not become unclean! 46 He shall be unclean for as long as the affliction is on him; he is unclean; he shall live apart, with his home outside the camp.

Afflictions in Clothing

47 The garment which has the lesion requiring isolation in it, whether it is in a garment of wool or of linen, 48 whether in the warp or in the weft of linen or of wool, or in leather, or anything made of skin: 49 if the plague is green or red in the garment or in the skin, whether in the warp, or in the weft, or in anything of skin, it is a lesion requiring isolation, and must be shown to the priest. 50 And the priest shall look at the plague, and isolate it for seven days. 51 And he shall look at the plague on the seventh day; if the plague has spread in the garment, whether in the warp or in the weft, or in a skin, or anything made of skin for work, it is a spreading affliction requiring isolation, it is unclean. 52 And he shall burn the garment, whether it is in warp or weft, of wool, or of linen, or anything made of skin, which has the plague in it; for it is a spreading affliction requiring isolation; he shall burn it in fire. 53 But if the priest examines it and sees that the plague has not spread in the garment, whether in warp or weft, or in anything of skin; 54 then the priest shall direct, and they shall wash the affected article, and he shall isolate it for another seven days. 55 And the priest shall look after they have washed the plague, and if the appearance of the affliction has not changed from what it was, and the plague has not spread, it is nevertheless unclean; you shall burn it with fire, it is a damaged spot, whether on its inner or outer side. 56 And if the priest examines it and sees that the plague has faded after they have washed it, he shall tear it out of the garment, or out of the skin, or out of the warp, or of the weft. 57 And if it reappears in the garment, in warp or weft, or spreads in any vessel of skin, you shall burn in fire anything that has the plague in it. 58 And the garment, or warp, or weft, or anything of skin which has been washed, and the plague has gone from it, shall be dipped the second time, and shall be clean. 59 This is the law for the lesion requiring isolation in a garment of wool or linen, in the warp or the weft, or anything of skin, to declare it clean or unclean.

Purification after an Affliction

Chapter 14

1 And the Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 2 This shall be the law for the person requiring isolation on the day of his purification: He shall be brought to the priest; 3 and the priest shall go outside the camp, and the priest shall look, and if the person requiring isolation is healed of his affliction, 4 then the priest shall order that they bring for the person being cleansed two birds, alive, clean, and wood of the cedar and scarlet material and hyssop. 5 And the priest shall direct that one of the birds be killed in a clay pot with spring water. 6 And he shall take the living bird with the cedar wood, and the scarlet, and the hyssop, and dip them and the living bird in the blood of the bird that had been killed over the spring water. 7 And he shall sprinkle it on him who is to be cleansed from the affliction requiring isolation seven times, and he shall be clean: and he shall release the living bird over the open field. 8 And he who is cleansed shall wash his clothes, and shave off all his hair, and wash himself clean with water, and afterward he may come into the camp; but he shall stay outside his tent for seven days. 9 And on the seventh day he shall again shave off all the hair of his head, and his beard and his eyebrows, he shall shave off all his hair, and wash his clothes, and wash his flesh with water, and he shall be clean. 10 And on the eighth day let him take two male lambs unblemished, and one year-old ewe lamb unblemished, and three tenths of flour sprinkled with oil for a mincha, and one loga of oil. 11 And the priest who cleanses him shall have the man being cleansed stand with them before the Lord at the door of the Tent of Meeting. 12 And the priest shall take one lamb and offer him for a trespass offering, and the loga of oil, and shall lift them as a lifted offering before the Lord. 13 And he shall slaughter the lamb on the place where the sin offering is killed, and the burnt offering is killed, in the holy place; for the trespass offering belongs to the priest, just like the sin offering: it is most sacred. 14 And the priest shall take some of the blood of the trespass offering, and the priest shall put it on the tip of the right ear of him who is cleansed, and on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot. 15 And the priest shall take of the log of oil and pour it on the priest's left hand. 16 And the priest shall dip the finger of his right hand in the oil which is on his left hand, and shall sprinkle of the oil with his finger seven times before the Lord. 17 And the priest shall put some of the oil remaining on his hand on the tip of the right ear of him who is cleansed, and on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot, on the blood of the trespass offering. 18 And he shall put the oil remaining on the priest's hand on the head of him who is cleansed, and the priest shall make atonement for him before the Lord. 19 And the priest shall perform the sin offering, and make atonement for him who is cleansed from his defilement, and afterward he shall kill the burnt offering. 20 And the priest shall sacrifice the burnt offering with the mincha at the altar, and the priest shall make atonement for him, and he shall be clean. 21 But if he is poor and cannot afford these offerings, let him take one lamb for the trespass offering for the elevation to atone for him, and one-tenth of flour sprinkled with oil for the mincha, and a loga of oil 22 and two turtledoves or two young pigeons as he can afford; and one shall be the sin offering, and one the burnt offering. 23 And he shall bring them on the eighth day of his purification to the priest, at the door of the Tent of Meeting before the Lord. 24 And the priest shall take the lamb of the trespass offering, and the log of oil, and the priest shall lift them as a lifted offering before the Lord. 25 And he shall kill the lamb of the trespass offering, and the priest shall take of the blood of the trespass offering, and put it on the tip of the right ear of him who is cleansed, and on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot. 26 And the priest shall pour some of the oil on the priest's left hand; 27 and the priest shall sprinkle with his finger of the oil that is in his left hand seven times before the Lord. 28 And the priest shall put some of the oil in his hand on the tip of the right ear of him who is cleansed, and on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot, on the spot of the blood of the trespass offering. 29 And he shall put the oil remaining in the priest's hand on the head of him who is cleansed, to make atonement for him before the Lord. 30 And he shall offer one of the turtledoves, or of the young pigeons, as he can afford, 31 the one for a sin offering, and one for a burnt offering, with the mincha; and the priest shall make atonement for him who is cleansed, before the Lord. 32 This is the law for the person who has had an affliction requiring isolation and cannot afford the offerings for his purification.

Afflictions in Houses

33 And the Lord spoke with Moses and to Aaron, saying: 34 When you have entered the land of Canaan, which I will give to you for a possession; and I have put the affliction requiring isolation on a house in the land of your possession; 35 and he who owns the house shall come and tell the priest, saying, There is a plague, as it appears to me, in the house: 36 the priest shall direct that they empty the house before the priest goes in to inspect the plague; so that everything in the house is not declared unclean; and afterward the priest shall enter to survey the house. 37 Then he shall look at the plague; and if the affliction is in the walls of the house in seams, green or red, and they appear to be deeper than the surface of the wall, 38 then the priest shall go out from the house to the door of the house, and close the house for seven days. 39 And the priest shall return on the seventh day, and look, and if the plague has spread in the walls of the house, 40 then the priest shall order that they take down the stones of the house in which the plague is, and throw them outside the town into an unclean place. 41 And they shall scrape the house all around inside, and throw the plaster dust which they have scraped off outside the town, into an unclean place. 42 And they shall take other stones, and insert them in the place of the former stones, and shall take other plaster and cover the house. 43 And if the affliction returns and spreads in the house after the stones have been taken down, and after they have scraped the house, and after it has been plastered again; 44 then the priest shall enter, and if the plague has spread in the house, it is a spreading affliction requiring isolation in the house, it is unclean. 45 And they shall break down the house, the stones of it, the timber, and all the mortar of the house; and he shall have them carried outside the town to an unclean place. 46 And whoever goes into the house all the days that it is shut up, shall be unclean until the evening. 47 And he who may sleep in the house shall wash his clothes, and he who eats in the house shall wash his clothes. 48 But if the priest enters and sees that the affliction has not spread in the house after the house has been plastered, the priest shall declare the house clean, for the plague has been cured. 49 And he shall take, to purify the house, two birds, and cedar wood, and scarlet, and hyssop. 50 And he shall kill the one bird in a vessel of pottery with spring water, 51 and take the cedar wood, and the hyssop, and the scarlet, and the living bird; and dip them in the blood of the bird which had been killed and in the spring water, and sprinkle the house seven times. 52 And he shall purify the house with the blood of the bird, and with the spring water, and with the living bird, and with the cedar wood, and with the hyssop, and with the scarlet. 53 But he shall release the living bird outside the town over the open field, and make atonement for the house, and it shall be clean. 54 This is the law for every affliction requiring isolation and of scaly patches, 55 and for such an affliction in clothing, and in a house: 56 and for abscess, and scar, and inflamed spot: 57 to teach on what day it is unclean, and on what day it is purified. This is the law for the affliction requiring isolation.

Bodily Discharges and Ritual Purity

Chapter 15

1 And the Lord spoke with Moses and to Aaron, saying: 2 Speak with the sons of Israel, and say to them: When any man has a bodily discharge, he is unclean. 3 And this shall be his uncleanness by his discharge, when his discharge flows from his flesh, or his flesh is blocked from its flow, it is the cause of his uncleanness. 4 Every bed on which the man with the discharge lies shall be unclean; and anything on which he sits shall be unclean. 5 And whoever touches his bed shall wash his clothes, bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the evening. 6 And anyone who sits on something on which the man with the discharge has sat shall wash his clothes, and bathe in water, and be unclean until the evening. 7 And he who touches the flesh of the man with the discharge shall wash his clothes, and bathe in water, and be unclean until evening. 8 And if the man with the discharge spits on one who is clean, he shall wash his clothes, and bathe in water, and be unclean until evening. 9 And any saddle on which the man with the discharge rides shall be unclean; 10 and whoever touches any things that have been under him shall be unclean until evening; and he who carries them shall wash his clothes, and bathe in water, and be unclean until evening. 11 And anyone whom the man with the discharge touches without first rinsing his hands in water, shall wash his clothes, and bathe in water, and be unclean until evening. 12 And every clay pot which the man with the discharge may have touched shall be broken, and every vessel of wood shall be rinsed in water. 13 And when the man with the discharge is cleansed of it, he shall count seven days for his purification, and wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in spring water, and be clean. 14 And on the eighth day let him take two turtledoves, or two young pigeons, and bring them before the Lord at the door of the Tent of Meeting, and give them to the priest. 15 And the priest shall offer them, one as a sin offering and one as a burnt offering; and the priest shall make atonement for him before the Lord, for his discharge. 16 And if a man has an emission of semen, he shall wash all his flesh with water, and be unclean until evening. 17 And any garment or any skin on which there is semen, shall be washed in water, and be unclean until evening. 18 If a man has intercourse with a woman and emits semen, they shall both bathe with water, and be unclean until evening. 19 If a woman has a bodily discharge of blood, her separation shall last seven days, and whoever touches her shall be unclean until evening. 20 And everything on which she lies in her separation shall be unclean, and anything that she sits on shall be unclean. 21 And anyone who touches her bed shall wash his clothes, and bathe in water, and be unclean until evening; 22 and anyone who touches something on which she has sat shall wash his clothes, and bathe in water, and be unclean until evening. 23 And if it is on her bed, or anything on which she has sat, when he has touched it, he shall be unclean until the evening. 24 And if a man lies with her, and her menstrual impurity is on him, he shall be unclean seven days, and any bed on which he lies shall be unclean. 25 And if a woman has a discharge of blood many days beyond the time of her separation, if it continues beyond her time of separation, all the days of her unclean discharge shall be as the days of her separation; she shall be unclean. 26 Any bed on which she lies all the days of her discharge shall be as the bed of her separation, and everything on which she sits shall be unclean as the uncleanness of her separation. 27 And whoever touches them shall be unclean, and shall wash his clothes, and bathe in water, and be unclean until evening. 28 But if she is cleansed from her discharge, then let her count seven days, and afterward she is clean. 29 And on the eighth day let her take for herself two turtledoves, or two young pigeons, and bring them to the priest at the door of the Tent of Meeting. 30 And the priest shall make the one a sin offering, and one a burnt offering, and the priest shall atone before the Lord for her unclean discharge. 31 And in this way you shall separate the children of Israel from their uncleanness, so that they do not die by defiling My Tabernacle which is among them. 32 This is the law for him who has a discharge, or who emits semen, and who is defiled by it; 33 and of a woman with a menstrual discharge; and of anyone with a flowing discharge, of the male and of the female, and of him who lies with her who is unclean.

The Day of Atonement

Chapter 16

1 And the Lord spoke with Moses after the two sons of Aaron had died, who offered the strange fire before the Lord, and died; 2 and the Lord said to Moses, Speak with Aaron your brother, that he may not enter at any time into the Holy Place within the veil before the mercy-seat which is on the ark, so that he does not die; for I will reveal Myself in the cloud over the mercy-seat. 3 Aaron shall enter the holy place in this way: with a young bull for a sin offering, and a ram for a burnt offering. 4 He shall be dressed in the holy linen garment, and linen undergarments shall be next to his body, and he shall be tied with the linen sash, and the linen turban shall be on his head: these are holy garments; and he shall wash his flesh in water, and then put them on. 5 And he shall take from the congregation of the sons of Israel two young goats for a sin offering, and one ram for a burnt offering. 6 And Aaron shall offer the bull of the sin offering for himself, and make atonement for himself and for the men of his house. 7 And he shall take the two goats, and have them stand before the Lord, at the door of the Tent of Meeting. 8 And Aaron shall cast lots for the two goats; one lot for the Name of the Lord, and one lot for Azazel. 9 And Aaron shall offer the goat whose lot came up for the Name of the Lord, and make him a sin offering; 10 and he shall have the goat whose lot came up for Azazel stand alive before the Lord, to make an atonement for it, and to send him away to Azazel, to the desert. 11 And Aaron shall offer the bull for his own sin, and make atonement for himself and for the men of his house; and he shall kill the bull for the sin offering which is for himself. 12 And he shall take a fire pan full of burning coals from the altar before the Lord, and his handful of fragrant incense ground fine, and carry them inside the veil. 13 And he shall put the sweet incense on the fire before the Lord, and the cloud of incense will cover the mercy-seat which is over the testimony, that he may not die. 14 And he shall take of the blood of the bull, and sprinkle it with his finger on the face of the mercy-seat eastward, and he shall sprinkle some of the blood seven times with his finger before the mercy-seat. 15 And he shall kill the goat for the sin offering of the people, and enter, with its blood, within the veil, and do with his blood as he had done with the blood of the bull, and sprinkle it on the mercy-seat and before the mercy-seat. 16 And he shall in this way make atonement for the holy place on account of the uncleanness of the children of Israel, and the rebellion of all their sin. And he shall do the same for the Tent of Meeting which remains with them in the midst of their uncleanness. 17 But no man shall be in the Tent of Meeting when he enters to make atonement in the holy place until he comes out: and he shall atone for himself, and for the men of his house, and for all the congregation of Israel. 18 And he shall go out to the altar which is before the Lord, and make atonement for it; and take of the blood of the bull and of the goat's blood, and put it on the horns of the altar all around; 19 and he shall sprinkle some of the blood on it with his finger seven times, and cleanse it and sanctify it from the uncleanness of the children of Israel. 20 And when he has finished making atonement for the holy place, and for the Tent of Meeting, and for the altar, he shall then bring the living goat. 21 And Aaron shall lay his two hands on the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the iniquities of the children of Israel, and all their rebellions, and all their sins, and put them on the head of the goat, and send him away, by the hand of an appointed man, to go into the desert. 22 And the goat shall carry on itself all their iniquities into a land not inhabited; and he shall send the goat away into the desert. 23 And Aaron shall go into the Tent of Meeting, and take off the linen robes which he wore on going into the Holy Place, and shall leave them there. 24 And he shall wash his flesh with water in the Holy Place, and put on his garments, and come out to offer his burnt sacrifice, and the burnt sacrifice of the people, and make atonement for himself and for the people. 25 And he shall burn the fat of the sin offering at the altar. 26 But he who led away the goat to Azazel shall wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh in water, and afterwards go into the camp. 27 And he shall take outside the camp the bull of the sin offering whose blood was carried in to make atonement in the Holy Place, and they shall burn their skins and their flesh and their food with fire. 28 And he who burned them must wash his clothes, and bathe his flesh with water, and may then enter into the camp. 29 And this shall be to you for an everlasting statute: in the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall humble your souls, and do no work, whether the native-born or the proselyte who lives among you. 30 For on that day he shall make atonement for you, to cleanse you from all your sins, that you may be cleansed from all your sins before the Lord. 31 It shall be a Sabbath of Sabbaths for you, and you shall humble your souls. It is an everlasting statute. 32 And the priest whom he shall anoint, and who shall offer his offering, to serve in his father's place, shall make the atonement, and dress himself with the clothes of fine linen, the consecrated clothes. 33 And he shall make atonement for the Holy of Holies, and he shall make atonement for the Tent of Meeting and the altar, and he shall make atonement for all the people of the congregation. 34 And this shall be to you an everlasting statute to make atonement for all the children of Israel for all their sins once a year. And he did as the Lord commanded Moses.

Sacrifices and the Prohibition of Blood

Chapter 17

1 And the Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 2 Speak with Aaron, and with his sons, and with all the sons of Israel, and say to them: This is the word which the Lord has commanded, saying: 3 Any man of the house of Israel who shall kill a bull or lamb or goat in the camp, or who shall kill such sacrificial animals outside the camp, 4 and does not bring it to the door of the Tent of Meeting, so that it may be offered as an offering in the presence of the Lord before the tabernacle of the Lord, bloodguilt shall be charged to that man; he has shed blood, and that man shall be destroyed from his people. 5 In order that the sons of Israel may bring their sacrificial animals which they formerly sacrificed in the open field, before the Lord at the door of the Tent of Meeting, to the priest, and offer them as holy offerings in the presence of the Lord. 6 And the priest shall sprinkle the blood on the altar of the Lord at the door of the Tent of Meeting, and burn the fat to be received with acceptance before the Lord. 7 And they shall no more sacrifice their sacrificial animals to demons after which they have wandered: this shall be an everlasting statute to you for your generations. 8 And say to them, Any man of the house of Israel, or the proselyte who lives among you, who offers a burnt offering or a holy sacrifice, 9 and does not bring it to the door of the Tent of Meeting, so that it may be performed before the Lord, that man shall be destroyed from his people. 10 And any man of the house of Israel or of the strangers who live among you, who shall eat any blood, I will direct My anger against the man who has eaten blood, and will destroy him from among his people. 11 Because the life of flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your souls; for it is the blood that makes atonement for the soul. 12 Therefore I have said to the children of Israel, Let no man of you eat blood, nor let the strangers who live among you eat blood; 13 and any man of the sons of Israel, or of the strangers who live among you, who hunts an animal or bird which may be eaten, let him pour out its blood and cover it with earth; 14 for the life of all flesh is its blood; it is for its life; and I have said to the children of Israel, You shall not eat the blood of any flesh, for the life of all flesh is its blood; everyone who eats of it shall be destroyed. 15 And everyone who eats from an animal that died naturally or was torn by wild animals, whether he is native-born or a proselyte, let him wash his clothes, and bathe in water, and be unclean until the evening, and then he shall be clean. 16 But if he does not wash his clothes or bathe his body, he shall bear his transgression.

Forbidden Relations and Practices

Chapter 18

1 And the Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 2 Speak with the sons of Israel, and say to them: I am the Lord your God: 3 You shall not act like the people of the land of Egypt, where you lived, or follow the practices of the people of the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you; neither shall you follow their laws. 4 You shall carry out My judgments and observe My statutes by following them; I am the Lord your God. 5 And you shall keep My statutes and My judgments, by which a man who does them shall live an everlasting life. I am the Lord. 6 No man shall approach any close relative to uncover the nakedness; I am the Lord. 7 You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father or your mother. She is your mother; you shall not uncover her nakedness. 8 You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father's wife, it is your father's nakedness. 9 You shall not uncover the nakedness of your sister, the daughter of your father or your mother, whether born to your father by another wife or to your mother by another husband. 10 You shall not uncover the nakedness of your son's daughter or your daughter's daughter; for they are your nakedness. 11 You shall not uncover the nakedness of the daughter of your father's wife, born to your father; she is your sister. 12 You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father's sister: she is related to your father. 13 You shall not uncover the nakedness of your mother's sister; for she is related to your mother. 14 You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father's brother; you shall not approach his wife; she is the wife of your father's brother. 15 You shall not uncover the nakedness of your daughter-in-law; she is your son's wife; you shall not uncover her nakedness. 16 You shall not uncover the nakedness of your brother's wife; it is your brother's nakedness. 17 You shall not uncover the nakedness of a woman and her daughter; you shall not take the daughter of her son nor the daughter of her daughter to uncover her nakedness; they are closely related, it is a wicked scheme. 18 And you shall not take a woman together with her sister to cause her distress by uncovering her sister's nakedness during her lifetime. 19 And you shall not approach a woman during her separation for uncleanness to uncover her nakedness. 20 Nor shall you have sexual relations with your neighbor's wife to defile yourself with her. 21 And you shall give none of your children to be transferred to Molek, neither shall you profane the Name of the Lord your God: I am the Lord. 22 And you shall not lie with a male as with a woman; it is an abhorrent thing. 23 Nor shall you lie with any animal to defile yourself with it; neither shall a woman stand before a beast to allow it to have power over her; it is confusion. 24 You shall not pollute yourselves with any of these; for the peoples whom I am about to drive away from before you have defiled themselves with all these practices. 25 And the land itself is contaminated; and I will punish its guilt, and the land shall empty out the inhabitants. 26 But you shall keep My statutes and My judgments, and commit none of these abominations, neither the native born nor the proselytes who live among you; 27 for all these abominations have been done by the men of the land who have been before you, and the land has been polluted; 28 so that the land does not empty you out when you defile it; as it will have cast out the people who were before you. 29 For whoever commits any of these abominations, the souls that do them shall be destroyed from among their people. 30 And you shall observe the command of My Memra, that you do not follow the abominable customs which have been done before you, nor be corrupted by them. I am the Lord your God.

Holiness and Responsibilities toward Others

Chapter 19

1 And the Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 2 Speak with all the congregation of the sons of Israel and say to them, You shall be holy; for I, the Lord your God, am holy. 3 A man shall revere his mother and his father, and you shall keep the day of My Sabbath: I am the Lord your God. 4 Do not turn to idols, nor make cast-metal objects for worship: I am the Lord your God. 5 And when you offer the sacrifice of consecrated things before the Lord, make the sacrifice of it with your own free will. 6 On the day that it is sacrificed it may be eaten, and on the following day; but what remains on the third day shall be burned with fire. 7 If indeed it is eaten on the third day, the offering is rejected, and shall not be accepted. 8 And whoever eats it shall bear his guilt; for he has profaned that which was consecrated, and that man shall be destroyed from his people. 9 And when you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap every corner of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. 10 Neither shall you harvest your vineyard completely, nor collect the remainder of your vineyard; you shall leave them for the poor, and for the stranger: I am the Lord your God. 11 You shall not steal, nor deceive, nor deal falsely with one another. 12 Neither swear by My Name falsely, nor profane the Name of your God: I am the Lord. 13 You shall not oppress your neighbor or take anything by force: a hired worker's wages shall not remain with you until the morning. 14 You shall not curse him who cannot hear, nor put a stumbling block before him who cannot see, but shall fear your God: I am the Lord. 15 You shall not deal falsely in judgment, nor favor the poor or show deference to the powerful; you shall judge your neighbor truthfully. 16 You shall not make false accusations against your people, neither stand by while your neighbor's life is in danger: I am the Lord. 17 You shall not hate your brother in your heart: you shall certainly correct your neighbor and not incur sin because of him. 18 You shall not be revengeful, nor bear a grudge against the children of your people, but love your neighbor as yourself. I am the Lord. 19 You shall observe My statutes. You shall not crossbreed your cattle with other kinds, sow your field with mixed kinds of seed, or wear a garment made from a mixture of wool and linen. 20 And if a man has sexual relations with a woman, and she is a female servant betrothed to another man, and has not been redeemed with money or freed by a written document, she shall receive lashes; they shall not be put to death, for she was not free. 21 But he shall bring his trespass offering before the Lord, at the door of the Tent of Meeting, a ram for a trespass offering. 22 And the priest shall make atonement with the ram of the trespass offering before the Lord for the sin he has committed, so that he may be forgiven for that sin. 23 And when you have entered the land, and have planted any kind of tree for eating, the fruit of it shall be kept from you; for three years it shall be set aside to be destroyed; it shall not be eaten. 24 But in the fourth year all the fruit shall be consecrated for thanksgiving before the Lord; 25 and in the fifth year you shall eat the fruit of it, so that its yield may increase for you. I am the Lord your God. 26 You shall not eat anything with the blood. You shall not use enchantments, nor augury by the clouds. 27 You shall not shave the hair on your head in a circle, nor destroy the hair of your beard, 28 nor make a cutting for the dead in your flesh; nor tattoo marks on yourselves: I am the Lord. 29 You shall not profane your daughter by making her a prostitute, so that the land does not become a place of prostitution and become filled with wicked practices. 30 Observe My Sabbath days, and hold in reverence the house of My sanctuary. I am the Lord. 31 Do not turn to deceivers or consult diviners to pollute yourselves with them: I am the Lord your God. 32 You shall rise up before one who is a teacher in the law, and honor the elderly, and fear your God. I am the Lord. 33 And if a proselyte lives with you in the land, you shall not oppress him. 34 The proselyte who lives among you shall be treated as someone born among you, and you shall love him as yourself, because you were strangers in the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God. 35 You shall commit no dishonesty in judgment, in length, in weight, or in measure. 36 You shall have honest scales, honest weights, honest ephahs, and honest hins. I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from the land of Egypt; 37 and you shall keep all My statutes, and all My judgments, and do them: I am the Lord.

Penalties for Forbidden Practices

Chapter 20

1 And the Lord spoke with Moses, saying, 2 Speak to the sons of Israel: Any man of the sons of Israel, or of the proselytes who live in Israel, who gives his offspring to Molek shall certainly be put to death; the people of the house of Israel shall stone him with stones. 3 And I will show My displeasure against that man, and will destroy him from among his people, because he has given his offspring to Molek, to defile My sanctuary and to profane My holy Name. 4 And if the people of the house of Israel turn a blind eye to that man when he gives his offspring to Molek, so as to avoid having to put him to death, 5 I will direct My anger against that man, and against his helpers, and will destroy him, and all who go after him, to wander after Molek, from among their people. 6 And the man who turns to impostors and diviners to wander after them, I will set My displeasure against that man, and will cut him off from among his people. 7 But you shall be sanctified, and be holy; for I am your God. 8 And you shall observe My statutes, and do them: I am the Lord who sanctifies you. 9 For the man who curses his father or his mother shall be surely put to death; he has cursed his father, he is guilty of death. 10 And the man who commits adultery with his neighbor's wife shall be surely put to death; the adulterer and the adulteress. 11 And the man who lies with his father's wife, uncovering his father's nakedness, shall be surely put to death; both of them are guilty of death. 12 And a man who lies with his daughter-in-law, both of them shall be killed: they have committed a perversion, they are guilty of death. 13 And a man who lies with a man as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination: they are to be surely put to death, they are guilty of death. 14 And when a man takes a wife along with her mother, it is wickedness; both he and they shall be burned with fire; such wickedness shall not be among you. 15 And if a man lies with a beast, he shall be surely put to death, and you shall kill the beast. 16 And if a woman approaches a beast to submit to it, the woman shall be put to death, and the beast; they shall certainly be killed; they are guilty of death. 17 And a man who shall take his sister, the daughter of his father, or the daughter of his mother, and see her nakedness, and she sees his nakedness, it is a disgrace, and they shall be destroyed before the eyes of the children of their people: he has uncovered the nakedness of his sister, he shall receive the punishment for his guilt. 18 And a man who lies with a woman who is unclean, and uncovers her nakedness, he has uncovered her shame, and she has uncovered the uncleanness of her blood: both of them shall be cut off from among their people. 19 Neither shall you uncover the nakedness of your mother's sister, nor of your father's sister; for he will have uncovered that of his close relative; they shall receive punishment for their sin. 20 And if a man lies with the wife of his father's brother, he has uncovered the nakedness of his father's brother; they shall receive punishment for their guilt; they shall die childless. 21 And if a man takes his brother's wife, a forbidden act, he has uncovered the nakedness of his brother, they shall be childless. 22 But you shall keep all My statutes and all My judgments, and do them, so that the land into which I bring you to dwell may not cast you out. 23 You shall not walk in the laws of the peoples whom I drive away from before you; for they have committed all these things, and My Memra has rejected them. 24 But I have said to you, You shall inherit this land, and I will give it to you to possess it, a land producing milk and honey. I am the Lord your God who has separated you from the peoples. 25 And you shall make distinction between animals clean and unclean, and between birds unclean and clean, and not make your souls abominable by beast, or by bird, or by anything that creeps on the ground which I have set apart as unclean for you. 26 And you shall be holy before Me; for I the Lord am holy, and I have separated you from the nations to be worshipers before Me. 27 A man or a woman who practices deception as a medium or divination shall be certainly put to death; with stones they shall be stoned, they are guilty of death.

The Holiness of the Priests

Chapter 21

1 And the Lord spoke with Moses, saying: Speak to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and say to them: Let no one be defiled among his people on account of the dead: 2 yet for his close relatives, for his mother, and for his father, and for his son, and for his daughter, and for his brother, 3 and for his sister, a virgin who is near to him, who has no husband, he may be defiled for her. 4 But he shall not defile himself for a chief among his people and so profane himself. 5 They shall not shave bald patches on their heads, nor cut away the hair of their beards, nor cut marks into their skin. 6 They shall be holy before their God, and shall not profane the Name of their God; for they offer the offerings of the Lord their God, and they shall be holy. 7 They shall not marry a woman who is a prostitute, or one who is corrupted, nor may they take a woman who has been divorced from her husband; for the priest is to be holy before his God. 8 You shall consecrate him, for he is to offer the offering of your God: he shall be sacred to you; for I the Lord, who sanctifies you, am Holy. 9 And if the daughter of a man who is a priest profanes herself by becoming a prostitute, she has degraded herself from her father's holiness; she shall be burned with fire. 10 And the high priest who has been consecrated from his brothers, on whose head the anointing oil has been poured, and who, when his consecration offering is presented, is dressed in the holy robes, shall not let his hair grow long or tear his garments. 11 Nor shall he enter to any dead body, nor defile himself for his father or his mother. 12 And he shall not go out from the sanctuary nor defile the sanctuary of his God; for the crown of the anointing oil of his God is on him. I am the Lord. 13 And he shall take a wife in her virginity; 14 a widow, or a divorced person, or a defiled woman or a prostitute, he shall not marry any of these; he shall marry a virgin from his people. 15 And he shall not profane his offspring among his people; for I the Lord sanctify him.

Who May Serve at the Altar

16 And the Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 17 Speak with Aaron, saying: A man of your descendants who has any blemish on him shall not approach to offer the offering of his God. 18 For no man with a blemish may come near; a blind man, or one who is lame, or flat-nosed, or has disproportionate limbs; 19 or a man who has a broken foot, or a broken hand, 20 or who is hunchbacked, or of short stature, or who has a white spot in his eye, or a scaly skin condition, or ringworm, or who has ruptured testicles. 21 No man of the offspring of Aaron the priest who has a blemish may approach to offer the offerings of the Lord; because he has a blemish he shall not draw near to present the offering of his God: 22 yet he may eat the holy offerings of his God, even the most holy: 23 only he shall not enter within the veil, nor approach the altar, because he has a blemish; so that he does not profane My sanctuary; for I am the Lord who sanctifies them. 24 And Moses spoke with Aaron, and with his sons, and with all the sons of Israel.

Priests and Sacred Food

Chapter 22

1 And the Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 2 Speak with Aaron and with his sons, and let them keep separate from the consecrated things of the children of Israel, so that they do not profane My holy Name in what they consecrate before Me: I am the Lord. 3 Say to them, Any man of all the sons of your generations who shall touch the hallowed things which the children of Israel consecrate before the Lord, having his uncleanness upon him, that man shall perish before Me: I am the Lord. 4 Any man of Aaron's offspring who has an affliction requiring isolation or an unclean discharge shall not eat of the consecrated things until he is clean; and whoever touches anything made unclean by a dead person, or a man who emits semen, 5 or a man who touches any reptile that makes him unclean, or a man who makes him unclean by any of his uncleanness, 6 the man who touches him shall be unclean until the evening, and may not eat of things consecrated unless he washes his flesh with water. 7 But when the sun has gone down, and he shall have purified himself, he may afterward eat of the hallowed things, for it is his food. 8 He may not eat an animal that has died naturally or has been torn by wild animals, to defile himself by it: I am the Lord. 9 But let them obey the requirements of My Memra, so that they do not bring guilt on themselves and die for it, because they have profaned it: I am the Lord who sanctifies them. 10 No stranger shall eat what is consecrated; neither a guest staying with a priest nor a hired worker may eat the consecrated thing. 11 But if the priest buys a person with his money, he may eat of it, and one who has been born in his house, they may eat of his bread. 12 And the daughter of a priest, if she is married to a stranger, may not eat of things set apart and hallowed. 13 But if the priest's daughter is a widow, or divorced, and, having no child, has returned to her father's house, as in her youth, she may eat of her father's food; but no stranger shall eat of it. 14 And if a man eats some consecrated thing unintentionally, he shall add a fifth to it, and give the consecrated thing to the priest. 15 And let them not profane the hallowed things of the children of Israel which are set apart before the Lord, 16 nor bring upon themselves iniquities and sins, when they eat in uncleanness the things that are holy. I am the Lord, who sanctifies them.

17 And the Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 18 Speak with Aaron, and with his sons, and with all the children of Israel, and say to them: When any man of the sons of Israel, or of the proselytes in Israel, will offer the offering of any of their vows or any of their freewill offerings which they may offer before the Lord for a burnt sacrifice; 19 so that it may be acceptable from you, let it be a male without blemish, of the bulls, or of the lambs, or of the goats. 20 But you shall not offer anything that has a blemish, for it will not be acceptable for you. 21 And if a man presents a holy sacrifice before the Lord, as a vow set apart, or a freewill offering of the herd or of the flock, it must be unblemished, to be acceptable; there shall be no blemish in it. 22 You shall not offer before the Lord animals that are blind, broken, mutilated, or have abscesses, ulcers, or blotches, nor present an offering from them on the altar before the Lord. 23 But you may make a freewill offering of a bull or a lamb that has an overgrown or stunted limb, but for a vow it will not be acceptable. 24 And you shall not offer an animal that is crushed, torn, worn out, or emasculated before the Lord, nor do it in your land. 25 Nor may you offer any of these before your God from a Gentile, because their corruption is in them, a blemish is in them; they will not be acceptable for you. 26 And the Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 27 When a bull, or lamb, or goat, is born, it shall be seven days with its mother, and on the eighth day and from then on it will be acceptable to be offered as an offering before the Lord. 28 Whether it is a cow or ewe, you shall not slaughter both her and her offspring on one day. 29 And when you present a thank-offering before the Lord, offer it so as to be acceptable for you. 30 It is to be eaten on that day, nothing shall remain of it until the morning. I am the Lord. 31 And you shall observe My commandments, and do them. I am the Lord. 32 Nor shall you profane My holy Name, for I will be hallowed among the sons of Israel. I am the Lord who sanctifies you, 33 who led you out from the land of Egypt to be Eloha to you: I am the Lord.

Festivals and Sacred Times

Chapter 23

1 And the Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 2 Speak with the sons of Israel, and say to them: The Festivals of the Lord which you shall proclaim as holy assemblies, these are My festivals. 3 You shall work for six days, but on the seventh day is the rest of the Shabbath; a holy assembly; you shall do no work on it. It is a Sabbath before the Lord in all your dwellings. 4 These are the festivals of the Lord, holy assemblies which you shall proclaim in their seasons. 5 In the first month, on the fourteenth of the month, at twilight, is the Pascha before the Lord, 6 and on the fifteenth day of this month is the feast of unleavened cakes before the Lord; you shall eat for seven days unleavened bread. 7 On the first day you shall have a holy assembly; you shall do no regular work; 8 but you shall offer an offering before the Lord seven days; on the seventh day there shall be a holy assembly; you may do no regular work. 9 And the Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 10 Speak with the sons of Israel, and say to them: When you have entered into the land that I will give to you, and you reap its harvest, you shall bring an omera of the first of your harvest to the priest, 11 and he shall uplift the omera before the Lord to be accepted for you: the priest shall lift it after the festival day. 12 And you shall offer an unblemished year-old lamb on the day when you lift the omera, as a burnt offering before the Lord. 13 And the mincha for it shall be two-tenths of flour mixed with oil, an offering to be accepted before the Lord; and its drink offering, wine, the fourth of a hin. 14 You shall eat neither bread nor roasted grain nor fresh ears of grain until this day when you bring the offering of your God; an everlasting statute for your generations in all your dwellings. 15 And count seven complete weeks for yourselves after the festival day, from the day that you brought the omera of the elevation. 16 Count fifty days, until the day after the seventh week, and then offer a new mincha before the Lord. 17 Bring from your dwellings two loaves for an elevation, two cakes made from two-tenths of flour, baked with leaven, as first fruits before the Lord. 18 And with the bread you shall offer seven unblemished year-old lambs, one young bull, and two rams; they shall be a burnt offering before the Lord, with their mincha and their drink offering, to be received with acceptance before the Lord. 19 And you shall offer one goat as a sin offering, and two year-old lambs for consecrated offerings. 20 And the priest shall lift them with the bread of the firstfruits as a lifted offering before the Lord; with the two lambs the loaves shall be consecrated before the Lord for the priest. 21 And on this same day you shall proclaim that it shall be a holy assembly to you. You shall do no regular work. This is an everlasting statute in all your dwellings for your generations. 22 And when you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not reap every corner of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest; you shall leave them for the poor and for the stranger: I am the Lord your God. 23 And the Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 24 Speak with the sons of Israel, saying: In the seventh month you shall have a season of Rest; a memorial of the Trumpet, a holy assembly; 25 you shall do no regular work, but offer an offering before the Lord. 26 And the Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 27 But Yoma de Kippuraia shall be on the tenth day of this seventh month; you shall have a holy assembly, and humble your souls, and offer the offering before the Lord. 28 And you may do no work on that same day, for it is the Day of Atonement, to make an atonement for you before the Lord your God. 29 For every man who will not humble himself on that same day, shall be cut off from his people. 30 And any man who does any work on that same day, I will destroy that man from among his people. 31 You shall do no work: an everlasting statute for your generations, in all your dwellings. 32 It shall be a Sabbath of rest for you, and you shall humble your souls, on the ninth of the month at evening: from evening to evening you shall observe your rest. 33 And the Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 34 Speak with the sons of Israel, saying: The Feast of Booths shall be on the fifteenth day of this seventh month, seven days before the Lord. 35 On the first day you shall have a holy assembly; you may do no regular work. 36 For seven days you shall offer offerings before the Lord; on the eighth day you shall have a holy assembly, and offer an offering before the Lord. You shall be gathered together; you may do no regular work. 37 These are the Festivals of the Lord which you shall proclaim to be holy assemblies, to offer an offering before the Lord, a burnt sacrifice, and a mincha, and a consecrated offering, and drink offerings, each according to what is required for its day. 38 Besides the Sabbaths of the Lord, and besides your gifts, and besides all your vows, and besides all your freewill offerings which you present before the Lord. 39 Also on the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when you have gathered in the produce of the ground, you shall celebrate a feast of the Lord seven days. On the first day there shall be rest, and on the eighth day rest. 40 And you shall take for yourselves on the first day the fruit of the citron tree, and branches of palms, and myrtles, and willows of the brook, and rejoice before the Lord your God seven days. 41 And celebrate it, a feast before the Lord, seven days in the year; it is an everlasting statute for your generations; you shall celebrate it in the seventh month. 42 You shall live in booths for seven days; everyone who is native born in Israel shall live in booths: 43 so that your generations may know that I made the children of Israel to dwell under the shadow of clouds when I brought them out from the land of Egypt. I am the Lord your God. 44 And Moses declared the order of the Festivals of the Lord, and taught them to the sons of Israel.

The Lamps and the Bread of Memorial

Chapter 24

1 And the Lord spoke with Moses, saying, 2 Instruct the sons of Israel to bring to you oil of olives, pure and beaten, to give light, to make the lamps burn continually. 3 Outside of the veil of the testimony Aaron shall arrange it in the Tent of Meeting from evening until morning before the Lord continually; an everlasting statute for your generations. 4 He shall arrange the lamps on the pure lampstand before the Lord continually. 5 And you shall take flour, and prepare twelve cakes; two tenths shall be for one cake. 6 And you shall place them in two rows, six in a row, on the pure table before the Lord. 7 And you shall put pure frankincense on each row, and it shall be for Bread of Memorial, an offering before the Lord. 8 Every Sabbath day he shall arrange it before the Lord continually, from the offerings of the children of Israel, an everlasting statute. 9 And it shall be for Aaron and for his sons, so that they may eat it in the holy place; for it is most sacred to him of the offerings of the Lord by an everlasting statute.

Blasphemy and Equal Judgment

10 And the son of an Israelite woman and an Egyptian man went out among the children of Israel; and the son of the Israelite woman, and a man, a son of Israel, quarreled in the camp. 11 And the son of the woman the daughter of Israel pronounced the Name and cursed. And they brought him to Moses. And the name of his mother was Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan. 12 And they held him in custody, until it should be explained to them by the decree of the Memra of the Lord. 13 And the Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 14 Bring the man who has cursed outside the camp, and let all who heard lay their hands on his head, and let all the congregation stone him. 15 And speak with the sons of Israel, saying: Any man who curses before his God shall bear his guilt, 16 and anyone who pronounces the Name of the Lord, shall certainly be put to death, and all the congregation shall stone him, the proselyte as well as the native-born; when he has pronounced the Name blasphemously, he shall be put to death. 17 And the man who kills a human being shall be put to death. 18 And he who kills an animal shall make restitution, life for life. 19 And if a man inflicts a blemish on his neighbor, as he has done, so it shall be done to him: 20 bruise for bruise, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, as he has inflicted a blemish on a man, it shall be done to him. 21 And he who kills a beast shall make restitution; but he who kills a man shall be put to death. 22 You shall have one standard of judgment for the proselyte and the native-born alike; for I am the Lord your God. 23 And Moses spoke with the sons of Israel, and they brought out the blasphemer outside the camp, and stoned him with stones; and the sons of Israel did as the Lord commanded Moses.

The Sabbatical Year and the Jubilee

Chapter 25

1 And the Lord spoke with Moses on the mountain of Sinai, saying: 2 Speak with the children of Israel, and say to them: When you have entered into the land that I will give you, the land shall have a sabbatical rest before the Lord. 3 You shall sow your field for six years and prune your vineyard for six years, and gather in its fruit; 4 but in the seventh year the land shall have a sabbatical rest, a rest before the Lord; you shall not sow your field or prune your vineyard. 5 You shall not reap the aftergrowth of your harvest or gather the grapes you have left, it shall be a year of remission to the land. 6 Yet the produce of the land during its release shall be food for you, your male and female servants, your hired worker, and the resident who lives with you. 7 And all its produce shall be food for your cattle and the wild animals in your land. 8 And count for yourself seven years of Release, which are seven times seven years; and the days of the seven years of release shall total forty-nine years for you. 9 And you shall sound the trumpet, in the seventh month on the tenth of the month, on the Day of Atonement you shall sound the trumpet throughout your land. 10 And you shall sanctify the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty in all the land to all its inhabitants; it is and it shall be a jubilee to you; and each man shall return to his inheritance, and each shall return to his family. 11 That fiftieth year shall be a jubilee for you. You shall not sow, reap the aftergrowth, or gather the remaining grapes, 12 for it is a jubilee; it shall be sacred to you; you may eat what grows in the field. 13 In the year of this jubilee a man shall return to his inheritance. 14 And when you sell something to your neighbor or buy from your neighbor, you shall not take advantage of one another. 15 You shall buy from your neighbor according to the number of years since the last jubilee; he shall sell to you according to the number of years of harvest: 16 you shall increase the price when there are more years and reduce it when there are fewer years, for he is selling you the number of harvests. 17 And you shall not take advantage of one another; but you shall fear your God, for I am the Lord your God. 18 And you shall perform My statutes, and keep My judgments, and do them, and dwell in the land in security. 19 And the land shall yield its produce, and you shall eat until you are full, and dwell on it in security. 20 And if you say, What shall we eat in the seventh year; look, we are not to sow, nor to gather in our fruit? 21 I will command My blessing on you in the sixth year, and it shall produce for three years. 22 And you shall sow in the eighth year, and eat of the old produce until the ninth year: until the produce comes in, you shall eat of the old.

Land, Redemption, and Support for the Poor

23 But you may not sell the ground permanently: for the land is Mine, for you are guests and residents before Me; 24 and in all the land of your inheritance you shall let the ground have redemption. 25 When your brother has become poor, and shall have sold his possession, his redeemer who is his relative may come and release that which his relative has sold. 26 And if he has no one to redeem it but acquires sufficient means to redeem it; 27 then let him calculate the years of its sale, and repay the balance to the man who bought it, so that he may return to his possession. 28 But if he cannot afford to repay the buyer, the property sold shall be in the hand of the buyer until the year of Jubilee, and shall be released in the Jubilee, and return to his possession. 29 And if a man sells a dwelling house in a town surrounded with a wall, he may redeem it within the full year of the sale of it; it may be redeemed within that time. 30 But if it is not repurchased when the whole year is completed, the house that is in the walled town shall belong permanently to him who bought it for his generations; it shall not be released at the Jubilee. 31 But the houses of the villages which have no wall around them shall be regarded as the field of the land; they may be redeemed, or shall be released at the Jubilee. 32 And the cities of the Levites, the houses of the cities of their inheritance, may always be redeemed by the Levites. 33 And if someone buys from the Levites, the purchased house in the city of their possession shall be released at the Jubilee; for the houses of the cities of the Levites are their inheritance among the sons of Israel. 34 But a field in the suburbs of their cities may not be sold; for it is an everlasting possession for them. 35 And if your brother becomes poor and cannot support himself among you, you shall support him, and he shall live with you as a guest and resident. 36 You shall not take interest or profit from him, but shall fear your God and let your brother live with you. 37 You shall not lend him your money at interest or your food for profit. 38 I am the Lord your God, who brought you out from the land of Egypt, to give you the land of Canaan, and to be your God.

Servants and Redemption

39 And if your brother has become poor among you and has sold himself to you, you shall not make him do the work of slaves, 40 but he shall live with you as a hired worker and a resident; he shall serve with you until the year of Jubilee: 41 then he shall leave you, he and his children with him, and return to his family and to the inheritance of his fathers. 42 For they are My servants, whom I brought out from the land of Egypt; they shall not be sold as the selling of slaves. 43 You shall not make him serve harshly, but shall fear your God. 44 You may have male and female slaves from the Gentiles around you; you may obtain male and female slaves from them. 45 And also from the sons of the uncircumcised strangers who live with you, of them and of their children who are with you which are born in the land, you may obtain a possession, 46 and may make them an inheritance for your children after you to inherit them for a possession to serve them perpetually; but among your brothers the sons of Israel no man shall make his brother work harshly. 47 And if an uncircumcised resident among you becomes wealthy, and your brother among you becomes poor and sells himself to that uncircumcised resident, or to an Aramean from the resident's family, 48 after he is sold he may have redemption; one of his brothers may redeem him. 49 Either his father's brother, or the son of his father's brother, may redeem him; or any close relative from his family may redeem him; or if he can afford it, he may redeem himself. 50 And he shall calculate with his purchaser from the year that he sold himself, to the year of Jubilee, and the money of his payment shall be according to the number of the years, his time shall be valued like that of a hired worker. 51 If many years remain, he shall pay the price of his redemption according to those years; 52 or if only a few years remain until the year of Jubilee, he shall calculate with him, and according to the years shall give for his redemption. 53 He shall live with him as a worker hired year by year; he shall not work him with harshness before your eyes. 54 But if he is not redeemed within those years, he shall be released in the year of Jubilee, he and his children with him. 55 For the sons of Israel are My servants; they are servants whom I brought out of the land of Egypt: I am the Lord your God.

Faithfulness and Its Blessings

Chapter 26

1 You shall make no idols or images for yourselves or set up a statue; neither shall you place a stone for worship in your land to worship upon it, for I am the Lord your God. 2 You shall keep My Sabbath days and revere the house of My sanctuary: I am the Lord. 3 If you follow My statutes, and observe My commandments and perform them, 4 then I will give you rains in their season, and your land shall yield its produce, and the tree of the field its fruit. 5 And for you the threshing shall last until the grape harvest, and the grape harvest shall last until sowing time; and you shall eat your bread until you are full, and live safely in your land. 6 And I will give peace in the land, and you shall live there with no one to disturb you. And I will remove harmful animals from the land, neither shall those who destroy with the sword pass through your land. 7 And you shall chase your adversaries, and they shall fall before you by the sword. 8 And five of you shall chase a hundred, and a hundred of you put ten thousand to flight, and your adversaries shall fall before you by the sword. 9 For I will turn toward you through My Memra, to do you good, and will increase your numbers, and multiply you, and establish My covenant with you. 10 And you shall eat the oldest stored produce, and shall clear out the old to make room for the new. 11 And I will set My Tabernacle among you, and My Memra shall not reject you. 12 And I will cause My Shekinah to dwell among you, and I will be Eloha to you, and you shall be a people before Me. 13 I am the Lord your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt, that you should not be slaves to them; and I broke off the yoke of the Gentiles from you, and brought you into freedom.

Disobedience and Its Consequences

14 But if you will not be obedient to My Memra, nor perform all these commandments; 15 and if you despise My statutes, and you reject My judgments, so as not to do all My commandments, and so break My covenant, 16 I also will do this to you: I will afflict you with terror, wasting disease, and fever, with failing eyesight and an exhausted spirit; and you shall sow your seed for nothing for your enemies shall eat it. 17 And I will reveal My anger against you, and you shall be broken before your enemies; those who hate you shall rule over you, and you shall flee when no one pursues you. 18 And if even after these things you will not obey My Memra, I will punish you seven times over for your sins. 19 And I will break the glory of your power, and will make the heavens above you unyielding as iron, to give no rain, and the ground beneath you hard as bronze in yielding no fruit; 20 and you shall spend your strength for nothing, for your ground will not yield its produce, nor the tree of the earth its fruit. 21 And if you will continue acting stubbornly before Me, and will not return to obey My Memra, I will bring a plague seven times heavier upon you according to your sins. 22 And I will send the beast of the wilderness against you, and it shall devour you, and consume your cattle, and reduce your numbers, and leave your roads deserted. 23 And if through these calamities you will not be corrected by My Memra, but will act stubbornly before Me, 24 I also will deal harshly with you and strike you seven times over for your sins. 25 And I will bring upon you those who kill with the sword, who shall collect repayment from you for your transgressions against the words of the Torah. And you will gather in your cities; but I will send a plague among you, and you shall be delivered into the hands of your enemies. 26 When I cut off your supply of food, ten women will prepare your bread in one oven, and return your bread by weight, and you will eat, but will not be satisfied. 27 And if with this you will not be obedient to My Memra, but will act stubbornly before Me, 28 I will deal with you in fierce anger and punish you seven times over for your sins. 29 And you shall eat the flesh of your sons, and you shall eat the flesh of your daughters. 30 And I will destroy your high places, and cut down your images, and will throw your corpses on the corpses of your idols, and My Memra shall reject you. 31 And I will make your cities a waste, and lay waste your sanctuary, and accept no more the offering of your congregation. 32 And I will make your country a wilderness, and your enemies who settle in it shall be appalled by it. 33 And I will disperse you among the nations, and send after you those who kill with the sword, and your country shall be a desert and your cities a waste. 34 Then the land shall enjoy its rest all the days in which it shall be a desert, and you are in the land of your enemies: then the land shall rest and enjoy its release: 35 all the days of its desolation it shall rest; because it did not rest in the sabbatical years, when you were living on it. 36 And I will put fear into the hearts of those of you left in the land of their enemies, and they shall flee at the sound of a falling leaf; they shall flee as if fleeing from those who kill with the sword, and fall, though no one pursues. 37 They shall stumble over one another, as fugitives before those who destroy with the sword, while no one is pursuing, and you shall have no power against your adversaries; 38 and you shall perish among the nations, and the land of your enemies shall consume you. 39 And those of you who remain shall waste away in your sins, in their adversaries' land, and they shall also waste away for their fathers' evil deeds that they continue to practice.

Confession and the Covenant

40 But, if they will confess their sins, and the sins of their fathers, and the unfaithfulness with which they acted unfaithfully before My Memra, and that they have acted stubbornly before Me, 41 while I also have dealt harshly with them, and brought them into the land of their enemies; when their stubborn hearts are broken, and they accept the punishment for their sins, 42 I will remember My covenant with Jacob, and My covenant with Isaac, and I will also remember My covenant with Abraham, and I will remember the land. 43 But the land shall be left by them, and shall enjoy its rest while made desolate for them, and they shall receive the punishment for their sins; I will have brought curses instead of blessings on those who had cast away My judgments, and who had rejected My statutes. 44 Yet, even in the land of their enemies I will not strike them down, nor cast them away to destroy them completely, and to change My covenant with them; for I am the Lord their God. 45 But I will remember the former covenant with those whom I brought out of the land of Egypt in the eyes of the nations, that I might be their God. I am the Lord. 46 These are the statutes and judgments and the Torah which the Lord appointed between His Memra and the sons of Israel, on the mountain of Sinai, through Moses.

Vows, Valuations, and Dedicated Property

Chapter 27

1 And the Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 2 Speak with the sons of Israel, and say to them: When a man sets apart a votive offering, it shall be by valuation of the life before the Lord. 3 If it is the valuation for a male from twenty years to sixty years old, the valuation shall be fifty shekels of silver, in the shekel of the sanctuary. 4 And if a female, the valuation shall be thirty shekels. 5 And if the age is from five years to twenty years, the valuation for a male shall be twenty shekels, and for a female ten shekels. 6 And if the age is from a month to five years, the valuation for a male shall be five shekels of silver, and the valuation for a female shall be three shekels of silver. 7 But if the age is sixty years and older, for a male the valuation shall be fifteen shekels, and for a female ten shekels. 8 But if he is too poor to pay his valuation, then he shall stand before the priest, and the priest shall assess him according to what the person making the vow can afford; that shall be the priest's assessment. 9 And if it is an animal from which an offering may be made before the Lord, all that he gives of it before the Lord shall be sacred; 10 he shall not alter it or change it, good for bad, or bad for good; and if he will indeed change animal for animal, both it and that for which it is changed shall be sacred. 11 And if it is any unclean animal, of which none may be offered an offering before the Lord, he shall present the animal before the priest, 12 and the priest shall value it, whether good or bad; the priest's assessment shall stand. 13 And if he wants to redeem it, then he shall add the fifth to its value. 14 And when a man shall sanctify his house, to be consecrated before the Lord, the priest shall value it, whether good or bad; as the priest shall value it, so shall it stand. 15 And if he who had consecrated it will redeem his house, then let him add the fifth of the price of its value to it, and it shall be his. 16 And if a man consecrates a field of his possession before the Lord, its valuation shall be according to the quantity of its seed; if sown with barley, a measure shall be valued at fifty shekels of silver. 17 If he consecrates his field from the year of Jubilee, it shall stand according to its value. 18 But if he consecrates his field after the year of Jubilee, the priest shall calculate the money with him according to the years which remain until the next year of Jubilee, and it shall be deducted from the valuation. 19 But if he wants to redeem the field that he had consecrated, let him add to it a fifth of its assessed price, and it shall be confirmed to him. 20 But if he does not redeem the field, or if he has sold the field to another man, it shall not be redeemed any more: 21 but the field, when it is released at the Jubilee, shall be consecrated before the Lord as a devoted field; it shall belong to the priest. 22 And if a man consecrates before the Lord a field which he has bought, and which is not of the fields of his inheritance, 23 then the priest shall calculate the sum of its value until the year of Jubilee, and he shall give the price of it on that day, a holy thing before the Lord. 24 In the year of Jubilee the field shall return to him who sold it, to whom the possession of the land had belonged. 25 And every valuation shall be in the shekel of the sanctuary, with twenty maheen to the shekel. 26 Moreover, no man may consecrate the firstborn among cattle that is already a firstborn before the Lord, whether ox or sheep; it is the Lord's already. 27 And if it is an unclean animal, then he shall redeem it according to its valuation, and add one fifth to it: or if it is not redeemed, then it shall be sold according to its valuation. 28 Nevertheless, no devoted thing which a man shall have devoted before the Lord of all that he has of man or of beast and of the field of his possession may be sold or redeemed; every devoted thing is most sacred before the Lord. 29 No person devoted to death, such as a condemned criminal, shall be redeemed; he shall be put to death. 30 And all the tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land or of the fruit of the tree, is the Lord's; it is sacred before the Lord. 31 But if a man wants to redeem any of his tithe, he shall add a fifth to it. 32 And every tenth animal among the oxen or sheep, whatever passes under the tithing rod, shall be sacred before the Lord. 33 He shall not choose between the good and bad, neither shall he change it. But if he exchanges it, both it and that for which it was exchanged shall be consecrated, and not be redeemed. 34 These are the commandments which the Lord commanded Moses for the children of Israel, on the mountain of Sinai.
