Purification after an Affliction

Chapter 14

1 And the Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 2 This shall be the law for the person requiring isolation on the day of his purification: He shall be brought to the priest; 3 and the priest shall go outside the camp, and the priest shall look, and if the person requiring isolation is healed of his affliction, 4 then the priest shall order that they bring for the person being cleansed two birds, alive, clean, and wood of the cedar and scarlet material and hyssop. 5 And the priest shall direct that one of the birds be killed in a clay pot with spring water. 6 And he shall take the living bird with the cedar wood, and the scarlet, and the hyssop, and dip them and the living bird in the blood of the bird that had been killed over the spring water. 7 And he shall sprinkle it on him who is to be cleansed from the affliction requiring isolation seven times, and he shall be clean: and he shall release the living bird over the open field. 8 And he who is cleansed shall wash his clothes, and shave off all his hair, and wash himself clean with water, and afterward he may come into the camp; but he shall stay outside his tent for seven days. 9 And on the seventh day he shall again shave off all the hair of his head, and his beard and his eyebrows, he shall shave off all his hair, and wash his clothes, and wash his flesh with water, and he shall be clean. 10 And on the eighth day let him take two male lambs unblemished, and one year-old ewe lamb unblemished, and three tenths of flour sprinkled with oil for a mincha, and one loga of oil. 11 And the priest who cleanses him shall have the man being cleansed stand with them before the Lord at the door of the Tent of Meeting. 12 And the priest shall take one lamb and offer him for a trespass offering, and the loga of oil, and shall lift them as a lifted offering before the Lord. 13 And he shall slaughter the lamb on the place where the sin offering is killed, and the burnt offering is killed, in the holy place; for the trespass offering belongs to the priest, just like the sin offering: it is most sacred. 14 And the priest shall take some of the blood of the trespass offering, and the priest shall put it on the tip of the right ear of him who is cleansed, and on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot. 15 And the priest shall take of the log of oil and pour it on the priest's left hand. 16 And the priest shall dip the finger of his right hand in the oil which is on his left hand, and shall sprinkle of the oil with his finger seven times before the Lord. 17 And the priest shall put some of the oil remaining on his hand on the tip of the right ear of him who is cleansed, and on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot, on the blood of the trespass offering. 18 And he shall put the oil remaining on the priest's hand on the head of him who is cleansed, and the priest shall make atonement for him before the Lord. 19 And the priest shall perform the sin offering, and make atonement for him who is cleansed from his defilement, and afterward he shall kill the burnt offering. 20 And the priest shall sacrifice the burnt offering with the mincha at the altar, and the priest shall make atonement for him, and he shall be clean. 21 But if he is poor and cannot afford these offerings, let him take one lamb for the trespass offering for the elevation to atone for him, and one-tenth of flour sprinkled with oil for the mincha, and a loga of oil 22 and two turtledoves or two young pigeons as he can afford; and one shall be the sin offering, and one the burnt offering. 23 And he shall bring them on the eighth day of his purification to the priest, at the door of the Tent of Meeting before the Lord. 24 And the priest shall take the lamb of the trespass offering, and the log of oil, and the priest shall lift them as a lifted offering before the Lord. 25 And he shall kill the lamb of the trespass offering, and the priest shall take of the blood of the trespass offering, and put it on the tip of the right ear of him who is cleansed, and on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot. 26 And the priest shall pour some of the oil on the priest's left hand; 27 and the priest shall sprinkle with his finger of the oil that is in his left hand seven times before the Lord. 28 And the priest shall put some of the oil in his hand on the tip of the right ear of him who is cleansed, and on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot, on the spot of the blood of the trespass offering. 29 And he shall put the oil remaining in the priest's hand on the head of him who is cleansed, to make atonement for him before the Lord. 30 And he shall offer one of the turtledoves, or of the young pigeons, as he can afford, 31 the one for a sin offering, and one for a burnt offering, with the mincha; and the priest shall make atonement for him who is cleansed, before the Lord. 32 This is the law for the person who has had an affliction requiring isolation and cannot afford the offerings for his purification.

Afflictions in Houses

33 And the Lord spoke with Moses and to Aaron, saying: 34 When you have entered the land of Canaan, which I will give to you for a possession; and I have put the affliction requiring isolation on a house in the land of your possession; 35 and he who owns the house shall come and tell the priest, saying, There is a plague, as it appears to me, in the house: 36 the priest shall direct that they empty the house before the priest goes in to inspect the plague; so that everything in the house is not declared unclean; and afterward the priest shall enter to survey the house. 37 Then he shall look at the plague; and if the affliction is in the walls of the house in seams, green or red, and they appear to be deeper than the surface of the wall, 38 then the priest shall go out from the house to the door of the house, and close the house for seven days. 39 And the priest shall return on the seventh day, and look, and if the plague has spread in the walls of the house, 40 then the priest shall order that they take down the stones of the house in which the plague is, and throw them outside the town into an unclean place. 41 And they shall scrape the house all around inside, and throw the plaster dust which they have scraped off outside the town, into an unclean place. 42 And they shall take other stones, and insert them in the place of the former stones, and shall take other plaster and cover the house. 43 And if the affliction returns and spreads in the house after the stones have been taken down, and after they have scraped the house, and after it has been plastered again; 44 then the priest shall enter, and if the plague has spread in the house, it is a spreading affliction requiring isolation in the house, it is unclean. 45 And they shall break down the house, the stones of it, the timber, and all the mortar of the house; and he shall have them carried outside the town to an unclean place. 46 And whoever goes into the house all the days that it is shut up, shall be unclean until the evening. 47 And he who may sleep in the house shall wash his clothes, and he who eats in the house shall wash his clothes. 48 But if the priest enters and sees that the affliction has not spread in the house after the house has been plastered, the priest shall declare the house clean, for the plague has been cured. 49 And he shall take, to purify the house, two birds, and cedar wood, and scarlet, and hyssop. 50 And he shall kill the one bird in a vessel of pottery with spring water, 51 and take the cedar wood, and the hyssop, and the scarlet, and the living bird; and dip them in the blood of the bird which had been killed and in the spring water, and sprinkle the house seven times. 52 And he shall purify the house with the blood of the bird, and with the spring water, and with the living bird, and with the cedar wood, and with the hyssop, and with the scarlet. 53 But he shall release the living bird outside the town over the open field, and make atonement for the house, and it shall be clean. 54 This is the law for every affliction requiring isolation and of scaly patches, 55 and for such an affliction in clothing, and in a house: 56 and for abscess, and scar, and inflamed spot: 57 to teach on what day it is unclean, and on what day it is purified. This is the law for the affliction requiring isolation.

Summary

In Leviticus and its Aramaic translation in Targum Onkelos, God announces afflictions on houses. Later Rabbinic interpreters describe this as a blessing that would reveal treasure hidden in the walls when the houses were demolished.

"... Rashi, based on Sifra and Leviticus Rabbah, states that God was bringing good news to the Israelites when He told them that there will be tzaraat ('skin disease') in their conquered homes in Canaan. According to the Midrashim, during the forty years that the Israelites spent in the wilderness, the Amorites, fearful of the approaching Israelite attack, hid golden treasures in the walls of their homes. Since the tzaraat would require the Israelites to tear down their homes, it would reveal the hidden gold ..."
