St. Augustine of Hippo, Doctor of the Church, 354-430. Aurelius Augustinus was born on 13 November 354 at Tagaste, a small town of Numidia, North Africa. Patricius, his father, became a Christian shortly before his death (371), while his mother Monica, saint, was a Christian and a model of Christian virtue. In the Confessions (bks. 1-9) he describes his intellectual and moral development from childhood to the death of his mother (387).
