Chapter 34

1  2 Thus said the Lord; Make bonds and yokes, and put them about your neck, 3 and you shall send them to the king of Idumea, and to the king of Moab, and to the king of the children of Ammon, and to the king of Tyre, and to the king of Sidon, by the hands of their messengers that come to meet them at Jerusalem to Zedekiah king of Judah. 4 And you shall commission them to say to their lords, Thus said the Lord God of Israel; Thus you will say to your lords; 5 For I have made the earth by my great power, and with my high arm, and I will give it to whoever it shall seem good in my eyes. 6 I gave the earth to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to serve him, and the wild beasts of the field to labor for him. 7  8 And the nation and kingdom, all that shall not put their neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, I will visit them with sword and famine, says the Lord, until they are consumed by his hand. 9 And do not listen to your false prophets, nor to those who divine to you, nor to those who foretell events by dreams to you, nor to your auguries, nor your sorcerers, that say, You shall by no means work for the king of Babylon: 10 for they prophesy lies to you, to remove you far from your land. 11 But the nation which shall put its neck under the yoke of the king of Babylon, and serve him, I will even leave it upon its land, and it shall serve him, and dwell in it. 12 I spoke also to Zedekiah king of Judah according to all these words, saying, Put your neck into the yoke, 13  14 and serve the king of Babylon; for they prophesy unrighteous words to you, 15 for I did not send them, says the Lord; and they prophesy in my name unjustly, so as to destroy you, and you should perish, and your prophets, who unrighteously prophesy lies to you. 16 I spoke to you, and to all this people, and to the priests, saying, Thus said the Lord; Do not listen to the words of the prophets that prophesy to you, saying, Look, the vessels of the Lord's house shall return from Babylon: for they prophesy to you unrighteous words. I did not send them. 17  18 If they are prophets, and if the word of the Lord is in them, let them meet me. 19 For thus the Lord has said; And as for the remaining vessels, 20 which the king of Babylon did not take, when he carried Jeconiah prisoner out of Jerusalem, 21  22 they shall go into Babylon, says the Lord.

Summary

In Jeremiah 27, God warns the priests and people not to believe false prophets. The Greek Septuagint translation reverses the order of some of the language and adds an additional phrase that was meant to help clarify the motives of the prophets.

Passages

Jeremiah 27:15

Hebrew Bible
15 For I, the Lord, affirm that I did not send them. They are prophesying lies to you in my name. If you listen to them, I will drive you and the prophets who are prophesying lies out of the land and you will all die in exile.’” 16 I also told the priests and all the people, “The Lord says, ‘Do not listen to what your prophets are saying. They are prophesying to you that the valuable articles taken from the Lord’s temple will be brought back from Babylon very soon. But they are prophesying a lie to you. 17 Do not listen to them. Be subject to the king of Babylon. Then you will continue to live. Why should this city be made a pile of rubble?’”
500–401 BCE (scholarly estimate) Read in Jeremiah

LXX Jeremiah 34:15

Septuagint
15 for I did not send them, says the Lord; and they prophesy in my name unjustly, so as to destroy you, and you should perish, and your prophets, who unrighteously prophesy lies to you.

"... The focus now is on the Temple treasures, which are of special concern to the priests. But priests and people are also told to serve the king of Babylon and live. The LXX reverses "priests" and "people" and adds an initial "to you": "To you and to all this people, and to all the priests I spoke." The added pronoun may belong to the LXX plus at the end of verse 15, which does not appear to be original. The LXX reverses "priests" and "people" also in Jeremiah 28:5 ..."
