Psalm 17:15

Hebrew Bible
14 Lord, use your power to deliver me from these murderers, from the murderers of this world. They enjoy prosperity; you overwhelm them with the riches they desire. They have many children, and leave their wealth to their offspring. 15 As for me, because I am innocent I will see your face; when I awake you will reveal yourself to me.

1 John 3:2

New Testament
1 (See what sort of love the Father has given to us: that we should be called God’s children—and indeed we are! For this reason the world does not know us: Because it did not know him. 2 Dear friends, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet been revealed. We know that whenever it is revealed we will be like him because we will see him just as he is. 3 And everyone who has this hope focused on him purifies himself, just as Jesus is pure).

The ‘image’ denotes the intrinsic spiritual dignity that God has bestowed on humanity, but this dignity awaits perfection as the ‘likeness.’ This exegetical move draws on 1 John 3:2 (‘beloved, we are God’s children now; it does not yet appear what we shall be, but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is’), as well as St. Paul’s similar use of ‘likeness’ ... The first creation, as it were, awaits a final perfection at the end of time. This eschatological reading of the ‘image’ and ‘likeness’ distinction echoes the Psalmist’s own promise: ‘As for me, I shall behold your face in righteousness; when I awake, I shall be satisfied with beholding your likeness’ (Psalm 17:15). ...
