In Jubilees 21, Abraham warns Isaac of a mortal sin that brings severe judgment. The epistle of 1 John follows this tradition, distinguishing between sins not resulting in death from a sin resulting in death.

Jubilees 21:22

Pseudepigrapha, Hebrew Bible Expansions
21 I see, my son, That all the works of the children of men are sin and wickedness, And all their deeds are uncleanness and an abomination and a pollution, And there is no righteousness with them. 22 Beware, lest you should walk in their ways And tread in their paths, And sin a sin to death before the Most High God. Else He will [hide His face from you And] give you back into the hands of your transgression, And root you out of the land, and your seed likewise from under heaven, And your name and your seed shall perish from the whole earth. 23 Turn away from all their deeds and all their uncleanness, And observe the ordinance of the Most High God, And do His will and be upright in all things.

1 John 5:16

New Testament
15 And if we know that he hears us in regard to whatever we ask, then we know that we have the requests that we have asked from him. 16 If anyone sees his fellow Christian committing a sin not resulting in death, he should ask, and God will grant life to the person who commits a sin not resulting in death. There is a sin resulting in death. I do not say that he should ask about that. 17 All unrighteousness is sin, but there is sin not resulting in death.

The Testaments’ knowledge of Jubilees has already been established on other grounds. ...
