But I am a thing shaped of clay and kneaded with water, 24 a foundation of nakedness and a source of impurity, a furnace of iniquity and a structure of sin, a spirit of error and perverted, without 25 understanding, and terrified by righteous judgments. What can I say that is not known, or declare that has not been told? Everything 26 is engraved before you with the stylus of remembrance, for all the everlasting ages and the cycles of the number of the years of eternity in all their appointed times, 27 and they are not hidden or missing from before you. And how can a man recount his sin, and how can he argue about his iniquities? 28 And how can the unjust answer the righteous judgment? Yours, O God of knowledge, are all the works of righteousness 29 and the counsel of truth, but to the sons of Adam belong the service of iniquity and the works of deceit. You created 30 breath on the tongue, and you know its words, and you established the fruit of the lips before they existed. You set words to a measuring line, 31 and the utterance of the breath of the lips by measure. And you bring out the lines according to their mysteries, and the utterances of the breaths according to their reckoning, to make known 32 your glory and to recount your wonders in all your works of truth and your righteous judgments, and to praise your name 33 with the mouth. All who know you bless you according to their insight forever and ever. And you, in your mercies 34 and your great kindnesses, have strengthened the spirit of a man in the face of affliction, and the soul of [the poor] you have purified from great iniquity, 35 to recount your wonders before all your works. And you have given an answer of the tongue to my uncircumcised lips, and you have supported my soul with strength of loins 10 and firmness of power. And you made my steps stand in the territory of wickedness. And I became a trap for transgressors, but healing for all 11 who turn back from transgression, prudence for the simple, and a steadfast inclination for all the anxious of heart. And you made me a reproach 12 and a mockery to traitors, a counsel of truth and understanding for the upright of way. And I became, on account of the iniquity of the wicked, 13 a slander on the lips of the ruthless; scoffers gnash their teeth. And I was a song for transgressors, 14 and against me the assembly of the wicked rages, and they roar like the breakers of the seas when their waves churn; mire 15 and mud they cast up. But you have made me a banner for the chosen of righteousness and an interpreter of knowledge in wonderful mysteries, to test 16 [the men of] truth and to try those who love discipline. And I became a man of contention to the interpreters of error, but a master of 17 [peace] to all who see what is right. And I became a spirit of zeal against all who seek smooth things, 18 [and all] the men of deceit roar against me like the sound of the roar of many waters, and plots of Belial are [all] 19 their plans. And they overturn into the pit the life of a man in whose mouth you established and taught understanding; 20 you put it in his heart, to open the source of knowledge to all who understand. But they exchanged them, through an uncircumcised lip 21 and another tongue, for a people without understanding, to be ruined in their error. 22 I thank you, O Lord, for you have put my soul in the bundle of the living 23 and have fenced me off from all the snares of the pit. For the ruthless sought my life when I held fast 24 to your covenant. But they are a council of emptiness and a congregation of Belial. They do not know that my standing is from you, 25 and that by your kindnesses you save my soul, for my steps are from you. And they, at your bidding, have attacked 26 my life, so that you may be glorified in the judgment of the wicked and show yourself mighty through me before the sons of 27 Adam, for by your kindness I stand. And I said, “Mighty men have camped against me; they have surrounded me with all 28 their weapons of war. And arrows burst out with no healing, and the blade of the spear is like fire devouring trees. 29 And like the roar of many waters is the uproar of their voice, a cloudburst and a downpour to destroy many. As far as the constellations burst out 30 nothingness and emptiness when their waves rise up.” But as for me, when my heart melted like water, my soul held fast to your covenant. 31 And they, the net they spread for me catches their own foot, and the traps they hid for my soul, they have fallen into them. But my foot stands on level ground. 32 From their assembly I will bless your name. 33 I thank you, O Lord, for your eye was on me in the bereavement of my soul, and you rescued me from the zeal of the interpreters of lies 34 and from the congregation of those who seek smooth things. You redeemed the soul of the poor one, whose blood they planned to finish, 35 to pour it out because of your service. Yet they did [not] know that my steps are from you. And they made me an object of contempt 36 and reproach in the mouth of all who seek deceit. But you, my God, have helped the soul of the poor and needy 37 from the hand of one stronger than he, and you have redeemed my soul from the hand of the mighty. And with their taunts you have not let me lose heart, 38 so as to abandon your service for fear of the calamities of the wicked, or to exchange for folly the steadfast inclination that 39 you gave … […] … statutes, and in the testimonies you have [established] me, to hold fast 40 to flesh […] … the pit for all the offspring of the people 41 [… a] tongue like those taught by you, and in judgment

For children come to the breakers of death, 10 and she who is pregnant with a man is distressed in her pains. For in the breakers of death she delivers a male, and in the pains of Sheol there bursts 11 from the furnace of the pregnant one a wonderful counselor with his might, and a man is brought safely out of the breakers. In the one pregnant with him all 12 the breakers rush on, and sharp pains at their births, and shuddering for those who conceive them. And at his birth all the pangs come on 13 in the furnace of the pregnant one. But she who is pregnant with a viper is given over to sharp pain, and the breakers of the pit to all works of shuddering. And they shake, 14 the foundations of the wall, like a ship on the face of the waters, and the clouds roar with a roaring sound. And those who dwell in the dust 15 are like those who go down to the seas, terrified by the roar of the waters. And their wise men are to them like sailors in the depths, for 16 all their wisdom is swallowed up in the roaring of the seas. When the deeps boil up over the springs of water, the waves heave upward, 17 and the breakers of water with their roaring sound. And as they heave, Sheol and Abaddon open, [and] all the arrows of the pit 18 with their steps make their voice heard to the deep. And the [eternal] gates open [under] the works of the viper, 19 and the doors of the pit close behind her who is pregnant with iniquity, and the eternal bars behind all the spirits of the viper. 20 I thank you, O Lord, for you have redeemed my soul from the pit, and from Sheol Abaddon 21 you have lifted me up to an eternal height, so that I walk about on a level plain without limit. And I know that there is hope for one whom 22 you formed from dust, for an eternal assembly. And a perverted spirit you have purified from great transgression, to take its stand in position with 23 the host of the holy ones and to come into community with the congregation of the sons of heaven. And you cast for a man an eternal lot with the spirits of 24 knowledge, to praise your name in a community of rejoicing and to recount your wonders before all your works. But I, a thing shaped of 25 clay, what am I? Kneaded with water, and for whom am I counted, and what strength do I have? For I have taken my stand in the territory of wickedness, 26 and with the wretched in their lot. And the soul of the poor one sojourns with great tumults, and crushing calamities accompany my steps, 27 when all the traps of the pit are opened and all the snares of wickedness are spread, and the net of the wretched on the face of the waters; 28 when all the arrows of the pit fly without turning back and are shot without hope; when the measuring line falls on judgment, and the lot of anger 29 on the forsaken, and the outpouring of wrath on the hypocrites, and the age of fury on all Belial, and the cords of death have closed in with no escape. 30 And the torrents of Belial go over all the high banks like a fire that devours all who draw from them, to make an end of every tree, green 31 and dry, in their channels. And it sweeps on with sparks of flame until all who drink of them are no more. It devours the foundations of clay 32 and the expanse of the dry land. The bases of the mountains are for burning, and the roots of flint become torrents of pitch. And it devours as far as the great 33 deep. And the torrents of Belial break through to Abaddon, and the schemers of the deep roar with the noise of those who cast up mire. And the earth 34 cries out at the calamity that has come upon the world, and all its schemers scream. And all who are on it go mad 35 and melt away in the great calamity. For God thunders with the roar of his strength, and his holy height resounds with the truth of 36 his glory. And the host of heaven gives its voice, and the eternal foundations melt and tremble. And the war of the mighty ones of 37 heaven sweeps through the world and does not turn back until the destruction that is decreed forever, and there is nothing like it. 38 I thank you, O Lord, for you have been for me a strong wall 39 in … […] destroyers and all […] For you hide me from the calamities of tumult that … 40 [… doors of protection and] bars of iron, so that no troop may enter, a [guard of mighty men] 41 [when they join …] … around it, lest a [mighty man] shoot […]

For they drive me from my land 10 like a bird from its nest, and all my friends and my acquaintances are driven away from me, and they regard me as a broken vessel. And they are interpreters of 11 lies and prophets of deceit. They plotted against me a thing of Belial, to exchange your Torah, which you engraved on my heart, for smooth things 12 for your people. And they hold back the drink of knowledge from the thirsty, and for their thirst they give them vinegar to drink, so as to gaze on 13 their error, acting like madmen at their festivals and being caught in their nets. But you, O God, spurn every plan of 14 Belial, and your counsel is what will stand, and the plan of your heart is established for all time. But they are hypocrites; plots of Belial 15 they plan, and they seek you with a double heart, and they are not established in your truth. A root bearing poison and wormwood is in their plans, 16 and in the stubbornness of their heart they wander about and seek you among idols. And the stumbling block of their iniquity they have set before their faces, and they come 17 to seek you from the mouth of prophets of lies, seduced by error. And they speak to your people with mocking lips and another tongue, 18 to make all their works folly by deceit. For they did not choose the [way of] your [heart], and they did not listen to your word, for they said 19 of the vision of knowledge, “It is not sure,” and of the way of your heart, “It is not that.” But you, O God, will answer them, judging them 20 in your might according to their idols and according to the multitude of their transgressions, so that they are caught in their plans, by which they are estranged from your covenant. 21 And you will cut off in judgment all the men of deceit, and prophets of error will be found no more. For there is no folly in all your works, 22 and no deceit in the design of your heart. And those who are according to your soul will stand before you forever, and those who walk in the way of your heart 23 will be established for all time. And I, when I hold fast to you, I stand upright and rise against those who spurn me, and my hand is against all who despise me, for 24 they do not regard me until you show yourself mighty through me. And you have appeared to me in your strength as perfect light, and you have not covered with shame the faces of 25 all who are sought out by me, who are gathered together for your covenant. And those who walk in the way of your heart listen to me, and they draw themselves up for you 26 in the council of the holy ones. And you bring their judgment out to victory, and truth to uprightness. And you do not let them be led astray by the hand of the wretched, 27 as they plotted against them. And you put the fear of them on your people, and they are a hammer to all the peoples of the lands, to cut off in judgment all 28 who transgress your word. And through me you have made the face of many shine, and you have shown yourself mighty beyond counting, for you have made known to me 29 your wonderful mysteries, and in your wonderful council you have shown yourself mighty with me, doing wonders before many for the sake of your glory, and to make known 30 to all the living your mighty deeds. What is flesh compared with this? And what is a thing shaped of clay, to do such great wonders? It is in iniquity 31 from the womb, and until old age in guilty unfaithfulness. And I know that righteousness does not belong to a man, nor perfection of 32 way to a son of Adam. To God Most High belong all the works of righteousness, and the way of a man is not established except by the spirit that God formed for him, 33 to make perfect a way for the sons of Adam, so that all his works may know the strength of his might and the abundance of his mercies upon all the sons of 34 his good will. And as for me, trembling and shaking have seized me, and all my bones are broken. My heart melts like wax before fire, and my knees go 35 like water poured down a slope. For I remember my guilty acts, with the unfaithfulness of my fathers, when the wicked rose against your covenant 36 and the wretched against your word. And I said, “Because of my transgression I am forsaken by your covenant.” But when I remembered the strength of your hand, with 37 the abundance of your mercies, I stood upright and rose, and my spirit held fast in position in the face of affliction. For I leaned 38 on your kindnesses and the abundance of your mercies. For you atone for iniquity, and to purify a man from guilt by your righteousness is yours, [my God,] 39 and not a human’s, all that you have done. And there, for judgment, 11 you established me, and the counsel of truth you made firm in my heart, and from this comes a covenant for those who seek it. And you shut the mouth of the young lions whose 12 teeth are like a sword and whose fangs are like a sharp spear. All their plots are the venom of serpents. They lie in wait to seize, but they have not 13 opened their mouth against me. For you, my God, have hidden me from the sons of Adam, and your Torah you have concealed in me until the time 14 when your salvation is revealed to me. For in the distress of my soul you did not forsake me, and you heard my cry for help in the bitterness of my soul, 15 and you recognized the plea of my sorrow in my groaning. And you rescued the soul of the poor one in the den of lions who sharpened their tongue like a sword. 16 And you, my God, shut their teeth, so that they would not tear apart the soul of the poor and needy. And you drew back their tongue 17 like a sword into its sheath, so that the soul of your servant was not [cut off.] And in order to show yourself mighty through me before the sons of Adam, you did wonders 18 with the poor one. You brought him into the crucible like gold worked by fire, and like silver refined in the furnace of the smiths, to be purified seven times. 19 And the wicked of the peoples rush against me with their torments, and all the day they crush my soul. 20 But you, my God, turn the storm into a calm, and the soul of the poor one you have rescued like a bird [from the snare and] like prey from the power of 21 lions. 22 I thank you; blessed are you, O Lord, for you have not forsaken the orphan and have not despised the needy. For your might is without [end], and your glory 23 is without measure, and wonderful mighty ones are your servants. [Even those who] eat my bread 26 have lifted the heel against me, and all who joined my council have spoken ill of me with iniquitous lips. And the men of my counsel are rebellious 27 and grumbling all around. And about the mystery that you concealed in me they go around as slanderers to the sons of calamity. And in order to show yourself [mighty] through me, and because of 28 their guilt, you have hidden the spring of understanding and the counsel of truth. But they plan the calamities of their heart, and with words of Belial they have opened 29 a lying tongue like the venom of serpents that breaks out in thorns. And like those that crawl in the dust they shoot to seize, the [poison of] asps 30 that cannot be charmed. And it became an incurable pain and a malignant plague in the inward parts of your servant, making the spirit stumble and bringing 31 strength to an end, so that he could not hold his position. And they overtook me in narrow places with no escape, and with no separation from the families. And they sounded 32 … my dispute on the lyre, and on stringed instruments together their complaint, with ruin and desolation. Burning winds seized me, and pains like the pangs of 33 a woman giving birth. And my heart groans within me. I have put on darkness, and my tongue clings to the roof of my mouth, for they have surrounded me with the calamities of their heart, and their inclination 34 has appeared to me as bitterness. And the light of my face is darkened into gloom, and my splendor is turned to ruin. But you, my God, 35 opened a wide space in my heart, and they have made it narrower, and they have fenced me in with the shadow of death. And I eat the bread of my groaning, 36 and my drink is tears without end. For my eyes are dimmed from grief, and my soul by the bitterness of the day. Groaning and sorrow 37 surround me, and shame is on my face. And my bread has turned into strife for me, and my drink into an accuser. And it enters my bones, 38 making the spirit stumble and consuming strength, according to the mysteries of transgression, which change the works of God by their guilt. And they are to make a shoot sprout for an eternal planting, 8 taking root before they sprout, and they send out their roots to the watercourse. And its trunk opens to the living water 9 and becomes an eternal source. Only for your glory have you done all these things. 16 Blessed are you, O Lord, God of mercies and [great in] kindness, for you have made these things known to me, to recount 17 your wonders and not to be silent day and night. For you formed the [spirit of your servant, and according to] your [will] you established me. And you have not put 25 my support in gain, and in the wealth of [violence … not] my heart, and a fleshly inclination you have not set as my strength. 26 The strength of warriors rests on many delights, [and they take pleasure in] abundance of grain, new wine, and oil, 27 and they pride themselves in livestock and property, [and they flourish like a] leafy [tree] by streams of water, putting out leaves 28 and multiplying branches. For you have chosen [them from all the sons of] Adam, for all to grow fat from the land. 29 But to the sons of your truth you have given insight … […] … forever, and according to their knowledge they are honored, 30 one more than another. And so for a son of Adam … [… in a] man you have increased his inheritance 31 in the knowledge of your truth, and according to his knowledge … [… for] the soul of your servant detests wealth 32 and gain, and in the height of delights it does not … For my heart rejoices in your covenant, and your truth 33 delights my soul. And I blossom like a lily, and my heart is opened to the eternal source, 34 and my support is in the stronghold on high, and … trouble. And it withers like a blossom before the wind. 35 And my heart is in turmoil with anguish, and my loins with trembling, and my groaning reaches to the deep 36 and searches the chambers of Sheol together. And I am afraid when I hear your judgments on the mighty 37 warriors and your dispute with the host of your holy ones in heaven and […] … 38 and judgment on all your works, and righteousness … […] … 39 […] … […] 40 […] … 41 […] … my affliction.

And what am I, that 7 you have made me understand the counsel of your truth, and you give me insight into your wonderful works? And you have put thanksgiving in my mouth, and on my tongue 8 praise, and the flow of my lips in a place of rejoicing. And I will sing of your kindnesses, and on your might I will meditate all 9 the day. Continually I will bless your name, and I will recount your glory in the midst of the sons of Adam, and in your great goodness 10 my soul delights. And I know that your mouth is truth, and in your hand is righteousness, and in your plan is 11 all knowledge, and in your strength is all might, and all glory is with you. In your anger are all the judgments of affliction, 12 and in your goodness is abundant forgiveness, and your mercies are for all the sons of your good will. For you have made known to them the counsel of your truth, 13 and into your wonderful mysteries you have given them insight. And for the sake of your glory you have purified a man from transgression, so that he may make himself holy 14 for you from all impure abominations and guilty unfaithfulness, to be joined with the sons of your truth and in a lot with 15 your holy ones, to raise the worms of the dead from the dust to the council of [your truth], and from a perverted spirit to your understanding, 16 and to take his stand in position before you with the everlasting host and the [eternal] spirits, and to be renewed with all that is 17 and will be, and with those who know, in a community of rejoicing. And who among all your works is able to recount all your [wonders]? In the mouth of them all your name is praised 28 forever and ever. They bless you according to [their] insight, [and in all] ages they proclaim together 29 with a voice of rejoicing. And there is no sorrow or groaning, and iniquity will [be found no more.] And your truth will shine forth 30 for everlasting glory and eternal peace. Make the soul of your servant glad with your truth, and purify me 34 by your righteousness. As I have waited for your goodness, so I hope for your kindnesses. And with your forgiveness 35 you have opened my breakers, and in my sorrow you have comforted me, for I lean on your mercies.
