Ladder of Jacob

Summary

Date: 1-100 C.E.

The Ladder of Jacob elaborates the vision at Bethel from Genesis 28, in which Jacob sees a ladder set between earth and heaven and hears God's promise repeated to him. An angel, Sarekl, then interprets the ladder's twelve steps and twenty-four faces as ages and rulers still to come for Jacob's descendants, ending in the coming of a wounded and worshipped redeemer. Surviving only in Slavonic, the text is usually dated to around the first century C.E. in its Jewish core, with the final two chapters added later by a Christian editor.
