About this book
Chapter 6

1 And the word of the Lord came to me, saying, 2 Son of man, set your face against the mountains of Israel, and prophesy against them; 3 and you shall say, You mountains of Israel, hear the word of the Lord; thus says the Lord to the mountains, and to the hills, and to the valleys, and to the forests; Look, I bring a sword upon you, and your high places shall be utterly destroyed. 4 And your altars shall be broken to pieces, and your consecrated plats; and I will cast down your men who were killed before your idols. 5 And I will scatter your bones all around your altars, 6 and in all your habitations: the cities shall be made desolate, and the high places utterly laid waste; that your altars may be destroyed, and your idols be broken to pieces, and your consecrated plats be abolished. 7 And men will fall dead in the midst of you, and you shall know that I am the Lord. 8 When there are some of you escaping from the sword among the Gentiles, and when you are scattered in the countries; 9 then those of you that escape among the nations where they were carried captive shall remember me; (I have sworn an oath against their heart that prostitutes itself by turning away from me, and their eyes that prostitute themselves by pursuing their practices;) and they shall mourn over themselves for all their abominations. 10 And they shall know that I the Lord have spoken. 11 Thus says the Lord; Clap with your hand, and stamp with your foot and say, Aha, aha! for all the abominations of the house of Israel: they shall fall by the sword, and by pestilence, and by famine. 12 He that is near shall fall by the sword; and he that is far off shall die by the pestilence; and he that is in the siege shall be consumed with famine: and I will accomplish my anger upon them. 13 Then you shall know that I am the Lord, when your people who were killed are in the midst of your idols all around your altars, on every high hill, and under every shady tree, where they offered a sweet aroma to all their idols. 14 And I will stretch out my hand against them, and I will make the land desolate and ruined from the wilderness of Diblah, in all their habitations: and you shall know that I am the Lord.

Summary

Ezekiel 6 has a grammatically awkward phrase about leaving survivors, which may have been added to the Masoretic text to emphasize a remnant after exile. This is missing in the Greek Septuagint, which may reflect the original Hebrew version.

Passages

Ezekiel 6:8

Hebrew Bible
7 The slain will fall among you and then you will know that I am the Lord. 8 “‘But I will spare some of you. Some will escape the sword when you are scattered in foreign lands. 9 Then your survivors will remember me among the nations where they are exiled. They will realize how I was crushed by their unfaithful heart that turned from me and by their eyes that lusted after their idols. They will loathe themselves because of the evil they have done and because of all their abominable practices.
600–501 BCE (scholarly estimate) Read in Ezekiel

LXX Ezekiel 6:8

Septuagint
7 And men will fall dead in the midst of you, and you shall know that I am the Lord. 8 When there are some of you escaping from the sword among the Gentiles, and when you are scattered in the countries; 9 then those of you that escape among the nations where they were carried captive shall remember me; (I have sworn an oath against their heart that prostitutes itself by turning away from me, and their eyes that prostitute themselves by pursuing their practices;) and they shall mourn over themselves for all their abominations.
100–1 BCE (scholarly estimate) Read in LXX Ezekiel

References

"... And I will leave some of you ... The Hebrew merely says “And I will leave” and it is textually problematic. It is absent in the Septuagint, and its deletion yields a smooth-reading sentence here: “When you are fugitives of the sword among the nations, when you are scattered in the lands, your fugitives shall recall Me ...” ..."
