Chronological timeline of texts tagged with Septuagint Deletions

About This Tag

The various Septuagint translators sometimes removed details from their translation that were present in their Hebrew source text, or possibly had access to a Hebrew source text that modern translators do not. These deletions could help clarify narratives, reinforce later theological themes, conform to later stylistic preferences, or reflect later interpretive traditions or contemporary beliefs. Such changes suggest that the translators were not only translating but also engaging in a form of interpretation and commentary, shaping the text to align with the cultural and religious context of their Greek speaking Jewish audience.

Hebrew Bible
1 You must keep carefully all these commandments I am giving you today so that you may live, increase in number, and go in and occupy the land that the Lord promised to your ancestors. 2 Remember the whole way by which he has brought you these 40 years through the wilderness so that he might, by humbling you, test you to see if you have it within you to keep his commandments or not. 3 So he humbled you by making you hungry and then feeding you with unfamiliar manna. He did this to teach you that humankind cannot live by bread alone, but also by everything that comes from the Lord’s mouth. 4 Your clothing did not wear out nor did your feet swell all these 40 years.

Look, it now descends on Edom, on the people I will annihilate in judgment.”

Isaiah 51:9

Hebrew Bible
8 For a moth will eat away at them like clothes; a clothes moth will devour them like wool. But the vindication I provide will be permanent; the deliverance I give will last.” 9 Wake up! Wake up! Clothe yourself with strength, O arm of the Lord! Wake up as in former times, as in antiquity. Did you not smash Rahab?26 Did you not wound the sea monster? 10 Did you not dry up the sea, the waters of the great deep? Did you not make a path through the depths of the sea, so those delivered from bondage could cross over? 11 Those whom the Lord has ransomed will return; they will enter Zion with a happy shout. Unending joy will crown them, happiness and joy will overwhelm them; grief and suffering will disappear.
1st Century B.C.E.
8 For just as a garment it will be devoured by time, and like wool it will be devoured by a moth, but my righteousness will be forever and my salvation for generations of generations. 9 Awake, awake, O Ierousalem; put on the strength of your arm! Awake, as at the beginning of a day, like a generation of long ago! Are you not 10 she who made desolate the sea, the water, the abundance of the deep, who made the depths of the sea a way of passage for those being delivered 11 and those who have been ransomed? For by the Lord they shall be returned and come to Sion with joy and everlasting gladness; for gladness and praise shall be upon their heads and joy shall take hold of them; pain and sorrow and sighing have fled away.

Isaiah 61:7

Hebrew Bible
6 You will be called, ‘the Lord’s priests, servants of our God.’ You will enjoy the wealth of nations and boast about the riches you receive from them. 7 Instead of shame, you will get a double portion; instead of humiliation, they will rejoice over the land they receive. They will loathe themselves because of the evil they have done and because of all their abominable practices.
1st Century B.C.E.

I have sworn against their heart that goes whoring away from me and against their eyes that prostitute themselves after their practices, and they will strike their faces for all their abominations,

Jeremiah 13:17

Hebrew Bible
16 Show the Lord your God the respect that is due him. Do it before he brings the darkness of disaster. Do it before you stumble into distress like a traveler on the mountains at twilight. Do it before he turns the light of deliverance you hope for into the darkness and gloom of exile. 17 But if you will not pay attention to this warning, I will weep alone because of your arrogant pride. I will weep bitterly, and my eyes will overflow with tears because you, the Lord’s flock, will be carried into exile. 18 The Lord told me: “Tell the king and the queen mother,‘Surrender your thrones, for your glorious crowns will be removed from your heads.
1st Century B.C.E.
16 Give glory to the Lord your God before darkness comes, and before your feet stumble on dark mountains; and you will wait for daylight, and the shadow of death will be there, and they will be placed in darkness. 17 But if you do not hear, your soul will weep in secret on account of the face of insolence. And your eyes will bring down tears, for the flock of the Lord has been crushed. 18 Say to the king and to those who rule: “Be made low and sit down, because your crown of glory has been removed from your head.”

Speak out to all the people who are coming from the towns of Judah to worship in the Lord’s temple. Tell them everything I command you to tell them.
