The Hebrew version of 1 Chronicles describes Zerubbabel as the son of Pedaiah. The Greek Septuagint translation instead names his father as Shealtiel, the reading that later genealogies of David’s line all followed.

It is generally agreed that the Greek version of Chronicles was a primary source for the names of Jesus’s forebears up until the return of the Judahites from exile (Albright and Mann 1971: 3; Fitzmyer 1981: 491-494). Matthew also follows the Septuagint Chronicles’s identification of Zerubbabel’s father. In the Masoretic Text of Chronicles, Zerubbabel is listed as the son of Pedaiah, but in the Septuagint Chronicles, Zerubbabel is the son of Salathiel (Greek for Shealtiel), Pedaiah’s brother (Septuagint 1 Chronicles 3:19). Once Matthew reached Zerubbabel, however, he set aside Chronicles’ record and supplied names that have no other scriptural attestation. ...
