The Hebrew Haggai 2:14 declares the people and their offerings unclean. The Greek Septuagint adds a sentence not found in the Hebrew, condemning those who profit early and who hated anyone who rebuked wrongdoing at the city gates.

13 Then Haggai asked, “If a person who is ritually unclean because of touching a dead body comes in contact with one of these items, will it become unclean?” The priests answered, “It will be unclean.” 14 Then Haggai responded, “‘The people of this nation are unclean in my sight,’ decrees the Lord. ‘And so is all their effort; everything they offer is also unclean. 15 Now therefore reflect carefully on the recent past, before one stone was laid on another in the Lord’s temple.

Occasionally, the Septuagint pluses are confirmed by pre-Masoretic Hebrew texts: the uncharacteristic expansion in Hosea 13:4 (stressing creation; compare Amos 4:13) is attested in 4QXIIc, the smaller plus in Amos 1:3 has a Hebrew counterpart in 5QXIIAmos and the pluses in Nahum 1:14; 3:8 are perhaps present in 4QpNah. But usually, it is an open question whether or not substantial alterations, as distinct from minor adjustments for clarification or harmonization, are the work of the translator. In fact, substantial pluses are rare in the Twelve; apart from Hosea 13:4, the most notable occur in Haggai 2:9, 14; Malachi 1:1 ...
