About this book
Chapter 1

1 In the second year of Darius the king, in the sixth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the Lord came by the hand of the prophet Haggai, saying, Speak to Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, of the tribe of Judah, and to Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, saying, 2 Thus says the Lord Almighty, saying, This people say, The time has not come to build the house of the Lord. 3 And the word of the Lord came by the hand of the prophet Haggai, saying, 4 Is it time for you to dwell in your paneled houses, whereas this house is desolate? 5 And now thus says the Lord Almighty; Please consider your ways. 6 You have sown much, but brought in little; you have eaten, and are not satisfied; you have drunk, and are not satisfied with drink, you have clothed yourselves, and have not become warm by them: and he that earns wages has gathered them into a bag full of holes. 7 Thus says the Lord Almighty; Consider your ways. 8 Go up to the mountain, and cut timber; build the house, and I will take pleasure in it, and be glorified, says the Lord. 9 You looked for much, and there came little; and it was brought into the house, and I blew it away. Therefore thus says the Lord Almighty, Because my house is desolate, and you run everyone into his own house; 10 therefore the sky will withhold dew, and the earth shall keep back her produce. 11 And I will bring a sword upon the land, and upon the mountains, and upon the grain, and upon the wine, and upon the oil, and all that the earth produces, and upon the men, and upon the cattle, and upon all the labors of their hands. 12 And Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, of the tribe of Judah, and Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and all the remnant of the people, listened to the voice of the Lord their God, and the words of the prophet Haggai, according as the Lord their God had sent him to them, and the people feared before the Lord. 13 And Haggai the Lord's messenger spoke [among the messengers of the Lord] to the people, saying, I am with you, says the Lord. 14 And the Lord stirred up the spirit of Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel, of the tribe of Judah, and the spirit of Joshua the son of Jehozadak, the high priest, and the spirit of the remnant of all the people; and they went in, and worked in the house of the Lord Almighty their God, 15 on the twenty-fourth day of the sixth month, in the second year of Darius the king.

Summary

The Hebrew version of Haggai says the prophet delivered God’s message to the people. The Greek Septuagint interprets the rare word as “messengers,” so Haggai speaks among the angels, changing an ordinary report into a heavenly one.

Passages

Haggai 1:13

Hebrew Bible
12 Then Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel and the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, along with the whole remnant of the people, obeyed the Lord their God. They responded favorably to the message of the prophet Haggai, who spoke just as the Lord their God had instructed him, and the people began to respect the Lord. 13 Then Haggai, the Lord’s messenger, spoke the Lord’s announcement to the people: “I am with you,” decrees the Lord. 14 So the Lord energized and encouraged Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and the whole remnant of the people. They came and worked on the temple of their God, the Lord of Heaven’s Armies.

... messenger. Divine will is to be transmitted to the people through prophetic emissaries, and this designation (Hebrew malʾak) is applied specifically also to Malachi (1:1), whose name may actually be an appellative meaning “my messenger.” Imagery is drawn from the Divine Council scene as well as from the means for transmitting God’s judgments, once they are made in the Council, to the people (see Note to “the word of Yahweh,” 1:1). In Zechariah’s visionary sequence, angelic messengers figure prominently (compare 1:9, Note to “angel-who-speaks-with-me” and 3:1, Note to “angel of Yahweh”). message. The noun malʾákût appears only here in the Hebrew Bible. The Septuagint renders “messenger.” The similarity in Hebrew to the word “work” (mēlāʾkâ) in verse 14 has perhaps influenced this choice of word ...
