The Purifications
1First place [the statue] on sand in the House of Gold, with its face towards the south, on the earth, on the day of arraying him in his apparel. Then shall be said four times: “You are pure, you are pure, Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra, son of Ra, Seti-mer-en-Ptah, triumphant.” “You are pure, you are pure. Your purifications are the purifications of Horus, and the purifications of Horus are your purifications. “You are pure, you are pure. Your purifications are the purifications of Set, and the purifications of Set are your purifications. “You are pure, you are pure. Your purifications are the purifications of Thoth, and the purifications of Thoth are your purifications. “You are pure, you are pure. Your purifications are the purifications of Sep, and the purifications of Sep are your purifications. “You have received your head, and your bones have been brought to you before Seb.” [“You are pure, you are pure. Your purifications are the purifications of Sep, and the purifications of Sep are your purifications.”] “You are pure, you are pure, O Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra, son of Ra, Seti-mer-en-Ptah, true of voice. That which is in the two Eyes of Horus has been presented to you, and the two tesher vases of Thoth, and they purify you so that may not exist in you that [destruction] which belongs to you.”
The Censings
2“Pure, pure is Osiris, the king, Men-Maat-Ra, etc. Pure, pure is Osiris, the king, Men-Maat-Ra, etc. Pure, pure is Osiris, the king, Men-Maat-Ra, etc. Pure, pure is Osiris, the king, Men-Maat-Ra, etc. “Pure is the seman, pure is the seman which opens your mouth. Hail, Osiris, the king, Men-Maat-Ra, taste the taste of it in the divine dwelling. “An outflow of Horus the Lord is the seman, [an outflow of Set is the seman], which established the heart of Horus and Set, the seman of your mouth; your incense makes pure the gods who are in the following of Horus.” “You are censed with natron, you are censed with natron. Your censings with natron are the censings of Horus, and the censings with natron of Horus are your censings. “Your censings with natron are the censings of Set, and the censings with natron of Set are your censings. “Your censings with natron are the censings of Thoth, and the censings with natron of Thoth are your censings. “Your censings with natron are the censings of Sep, and the censings with natron of Sep are your censings.” And the Smer shall also say: “You are established among them (i.e., the gods); your mouth is the mouth of a milk calf on the day on which he is born.” “You are censed, you are censed. Your censings are the censings of Horus, and the censings of Horus are your censings. “Your censings are the censings of Set, and the censings of Set are your censings. “Your censings are the censings of Thoth, and the censings of Thoth are your censings. “Your censings are the censings of Sep, and the censings of Sep are your censings. “You are pure, you are pure, O Osiris, king of the South and North, the Lord of the Two Lands, Men-Maat-Ra, son of Ra, loving him, Seti-mer-en-Ptah. “Your Ka is purified, you are censed, you are censed, you are censed. You are established among your brothers the gods. Your head is censed for you, your mouth is censed for you, your bones have been purified for you, and the destruction (?) which belongs to you shall not [be to you], O Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra, son of Ra, Seti-mer-en-Ptah. I have given to you the Eye of Horus, and your face is filled with it.” Pet, twice. “O Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra, etc., I have presented to you the Eye of Horus, and the odour of it comes to you.”
Rising from the Dead, the Shadow and the Pressing of the Mouth
3The Am Khent and the Kher heb enter into [the tomb] to see him (i.e., the statue). And the Sem says: “One touched me when I was lying down asleep. One roused me and I awoke.” And the Am As shall say: “My father, my father! My father, my father! My father, my father! My father, my father!” And the Sem shall [at these words] sit up, and shall find the Ammu Khentu [standing at the door of the tomb]. And the Sem shall say: “I have seen the father in his every form.” And the Kher heb, and the Am As, and the Am Khent shall say to the Sem: “Is not your father [here] with you?” And the Sem shall say to the Ammu Khentu (i.e., to the Kher heb, and the Am As, and the Am Khent): “He whose face was covered with a net has covered him (i.e., the deceased) with a net.” And the Ammu Khentu shall say to the Sem: “I have seen the father in his every form. They protect him; he exists; he shall not be carried away.” The Sem shall stand up, and shall take a staff, and shall put on a qena garment, and shall say: “I love my father. I have made my father. I have fashioned an image of my father, and I have provided him with a large image.” And the Sem shall say to the lords (?) of the door (i.e., the ministrants): “Behold the things which displease (?) my father, O Mesentiu. Let strike his head an artisan. Behold, one of you shall smite your father.” And the Sem shall say: “O Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra, son of Ra, Seti-mer-en-Ptah, giver of life! I have come to embrace you. I am Horus. I have pressed together for you your mouth, I am your son, your beloved.” [And the Sem] shall say: “Smite my father. It is a praiseworthy thing for you to smite your father, [that is to say] this statue of the king Men-Maat-Ra, giver of life!” And the Sem shall say: “I am Horus, I will not permit you to make to shine the head of my father.” And the Ammu Khent shall say: “O Isis, Horus has passed on, he has embraced the father.”
Cutting Off the Thigh: the Heart and Leg of the Bull
4And the Kher heb shall say: “Pass on, and look upon the father.” Then shall the Sem take off the qena garment, and lay down the staff, and array himself in a panther’s skin. [And the Sem] shall say: “I have delivered this my Eye from his mouth; I have cut off the khepesh (i.e., leg, or thigh).” “You have cut off your Eye; your soul is in it.” [The female who represents Isis shall say: “Your lips are made for you, your mouth is cut open.” And the Sem shall bring two gazelle and a goose, with their heads cut off, and the Am Khent shall say:] “I have seized them for you, and I have brought to you your enemies; the gift of each is with you, on his hands and on his head. I have slain them for you, O Tem, and there shall be no [further] opposition to this god.” The slaughterer shall give the leg to the Kher heb and the heart to the Smer. Behold the heart in the hand of the Smer and the leg in the hand of the Kher heb, and they shall advance with them, and shall place [the leg and] the heart on the ground before the statue of the Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra, giver of life! [And they shall say:] “I have presented to you the Leg [as] the Eye of Horus. I have brought to you the heart which was in him, and there shall not be opposition to this god, [that is to say], to the statue of the Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra, living forever. I have brought to you a gazelle with his head cut off. I have brought to you a smen goose with his head cut off.”
Opening the Mouth with the Leg, the Meskha and the Ur-hekau
5[Then shall the Sem] say to the statue of the Osiris, the king Men-Maat-Ra, giver of life: “I have come to embrace you. I am Horus. I have pressed for you your mouth. I am your son, your beloved one. I have opened for you your mouth. “Your mother smites you and weeps for you. Those who were bound with you (i.e., Isis and Nephthys) smite you. Your mouth has been made firm. “I have made to balance for you your mouth conformably to your teeth, O statue of king Men-Maat-Ra, the ever-living. I have opened for you your mouth, with the Leg, the Eye of Horus.” “Your mouth has been made firm. I have balanced for you your mouth conformably to your teeth, O statue of the Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra. I have opened for you your mouth, O statue of the Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra, the ever-living. I have opened for you the two eyes.” [And the Sem shall also] say: “Hail, statue of the Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra, son of Ra, Seti-mer-en-Ptah, I have opened for you your mouth with the instrument of Anpu, I have unclosed for you your mouth with the instrument of Anpu, [with] the meskha (i.e., “thigh”) of iron with which the mouth of the gods was opened. “Horus shall unclose the mouth of this statue of the Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra, Horus shall open the mouth of the Osiris, king Seti-mer-en-Ptah, Horus has opened the mouth of the statue of the Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra, son of Ra, Seti-mer-en-Ptah, even as he opened the mouth of his father, as he opened the mouth of Osiris, with the iron which comes forth from Set. “With the meskha of iron with which he opened the mouth of the gods shall be opened the mouth of the Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra. He shall walk and he shall talk, and his body shall be with the Great Company of the gods in the House of the Great Aged Prince, who dwells in Aunu (Heliopolis). And he shall take possession of the Urerit Crown there before Horus, the Lord of mankind.” And the Am As shall say: “My father, my father! My father, my father! My father, my father! My father, my father!” And the Sem says: “Your mouth has been made firm for you. I have made to balance your mouth for you conformably to your teeth, O statue of Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra, son of Ra, Seti-mer-en-Ptah. “Lifts up for you the goddess Nut your head. Behold, Horus has taken possession of his Urerit Crown [and] the words of power. Behold, Set has taken possession of his Urerit Crown [and] the words of power. Behold, she (i.e., Nut) has come forth with your head. “All the gods bring to you [words of power], they recite them for you, they make you live, you become a lord of two-fold strength, you make for yourself the passes of life with them, [and life] is round about this statue of the Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra. You are protected, and you shall not die. “You shall make your transformations among the Kau (or, Doubles) of all the gods. You shall rise up as the King of the South, you shall rise up as the King of the North. You are endowed with strength like all the gods [and] their Kau. “And behold, this statue of the Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra, is Shu, the son of Tem, and [as] he lives [so] shall you live. Shu has provided you [with all things]. Shu has exalted you to the height of heaven. Shu has made you to be a wonder. Shu has endowed you with strength. “You have made the passes which place life round about the statue of the Osiris, Men-Maat-Ra, son of Ra, Seti-mer-en-Ptah, the ever-living. Your fluid of life is round about him, and this the statue of the Osiris Men-Maat-Ra shall not die. “Horus has opened for you your mouth. He has opened for you your two eyes with the two divine instruments, and with the Ur-hekau instrument with which he opened the mouth of every god of the South.” And the Am As shall say: “My father, my father! My father, my father! My father, my father! My father, my father!”
The Son Who Loves Him
6The Kher heb shall say: “His mother smites [him] (in the House of Gold), and she weeps for him; and those who were bound with him [also] (in the House of Incense).” The Heru khet, or “follower of Horus,” shall say: “O Isis, [Horus] has passed (in the hidden place), and [he] has embraced the father.” One seket vase. [The Smer shall say to the artisan:] “I am Horus. I will not permit you to make to shine the head of the father.” The Smer and the Kher heb shall come forth, and the Smer shall find Sa-f-mer-f at the door. The Kher heb shall say to the Sem, “Make to enter his son into the hall of the tomb of the Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra, giver of life.” [And the Sem] shall say to the statue of the Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra, giver of life: “I have brought to you your son, your beloved, and he shall open your mouth.” The Kher heb says: “Sa-f-mer-f, open the mouth and the two eyes, the first time with the iron instrument metchetfet, and the second time with the finger of silver-gold.” The Sem (or Am As) says: “Behold the loving son.” And the Sa-f-mer-f shall say: “I have pressed apart for you your mouth, and this mouth of the father has been drawn apart in your name of ‘Sekri,’ O statue of the Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra. “Horus has pressed apart for you your mouth. Horus has opened for you your mouth and your two eyes, and they are constituted in the statue of the Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra, giver of life. Your mouth has been made firm, and I have made to balance for you your mouth conformably to your teeth.” The Kher heb says: “O Sem, open the mouth, open the two eyes with your little finger.” “O statue of the Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra, your mouth has been made firm. I have made to balance for you your mouth conformably to your teeth. The mouth of every god of the South has been opened. Horus has opened for you your mouth; [it] has been made to balance. Your mouth has been founded (or, constituted).” Two vessels of incense (?) of equilibrium. The Kher heb says: “O Sem, rub the mouth and the two eyes of the beneficent god, the Lord of the Two Lands, Men-Maat-Ra.” “His mouth has been rubbed (sek, i.e., rubbing). His mouth is warmed and constituted. Your mouth has been constituted, established, and the eyes established, behold.” The Kher heb says: “You have come, you have purified your father.” An abet offering. “He has rubbed for him his mouth.”
The Four Abet, the Seb-ur and Tun-anu, and the Meskha of Iron
7The little tcherau says to the statue: “Your lips are made for you, your mouth is slit for you.” “Your mouth has been opened for you. Rub his mouth, O Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra, with four abet. Behold, O statue [of the king], open the mouth and the eyes; your mouth and your two eyes are constituted with four abet, constituted. Rub his mouth.” The Sem says: “O statue of the Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra, giver of life, I have come to embrace you. I am Horus. I have pressed apart for you your mouth. I am your son, your beloved one. “Your mother smites you in grief and weeps for you, and those who were bound with you smite you in grief. Your mouth has been made firm, and I have balanced for you your mouth conformably to your teeth, O Osiris, Men-Maat-Ra, I have opened for you your mouth with the khepesh (i.e., the leg) [as] the Eye of Horus.” And the Sem says: “O statue of the Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra, your mouth is firm, and I have made to balance for you your mouth conformably to your teeth. O statue of the Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra, I am your son, your beloved one. I have opened for you your mouth. I have opened for you your two eyes.” [And the Am Khent] shall say: “My father, my father! My father, my father! My father, my father! My father, my father!” “O statue of the Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra, I have unclosed for you your mouth with the instrument of Anubis. I have unclosed for you your mouth with the instrument of Anubis, the Meskha of iron, with which was opened the mouth of the gods. Horus, unclose the mouth of the statue of the Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra. “Horus, open the mouth of the statue of the Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra. Horus has unclosed the mouth of the statue of the Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra, Horus has opened the mouth of the statue of the Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra, even as he has opened the mouth of his father with it (i.e., the Meskha), even as he opened the mouth of Osiris with it. “With the iron which came forth from Set, with the Meskha of iron [with which] was opened the mouth of the gods, you have opened the mouth of the Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra. He has obtained the power of speech, his body is before the Great Company of the gods who are in the House of the Aged Prince who is in Annu, and he has taken possession of the Urerit Crown there, before Horus, the Lord of mankind. “O Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra, Horus has opened for you your mouth, and he has unclosed for you your two eyes with the instrument Seb-ur, and with the instrument Tun-anu, with which he opened [the mouth] of every god of the South.”
The Censing, the Nemes and the Royal Insignia
8The Sem says: “Pure, pure is his Ka. Pure is the Ka of the Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra. Shrouded is your head in the incense which is sweet of smell, and the dew of the god is upon your members. “The two Great Gods (i.e., Horus and Set), who preside over the Land of the South, purify you. The ... comes to the backbone of the Osiris. The Men-ur comes, the Men-ur comes. The member which proceeds from Osiris comes. “Horus has shrouded him with his Eye. Hail, Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra, you are shrouded with the Eye of Horus, you are censed with the Eye of Horus, you are filled with the Eye of Horus, you are filled with it as is the god. Behold the odour [of it] is to you, the odour of the Eye of Horus is to you.” The Sem says: “The Nemes cloth comes, the White One, the White One. The Eye of Horus comes, the White One. The gods array you in it. You are arrayed in it, you are ornamented with it in its name of ‘White One of Nekheb.’” The Kher heb says: “O statue of the Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra, giver of life, I have filled your eye for you with Metchet unguent.” The Sem says: [“Receive, receive, receive your beauties. Receive your two eyes. Receive this bandlet which is the Eye of Horus, the White One, which comes forth from the city of Nekhebet. You have risen like the sun in it. You are endowed with strength in it, in its name of ‘Atetau,’ like ...”] And the Sem shall say: “Horus has arrayed himself. Set has arrayed himself. Thoth has arrayed himself. Sep has arrayed himself. King Men-Maat-Ra, giver of life forever, has arrayed himself [in it]. “You are established by Horus. Your Eye has been presented to you, and you shall be distinguished by it in the House of the Great Aged Prince who dwells in Annu. Hail, statue of the Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra, son of Ra, Seti-mer-en-Ptah, your Ka shall be distinguished by it before your fathers.” The priest presenting the Ames sceptre says: “Unite yourself, unite yourself to this Ames sceptre of Aser wood, which is the smiter of the rebels, the power which rules the Two Lands. There is a soul to you. Horus gives you the Power of the Lord of two-fold strength, and you rule this earth, O Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra.” The priest presenting the Hetchet mace says: “Unite yourself, unite yourself to the Eye of Horus, the Hetchet mace, the smiter of the Rekhit of Horus, which is called ‘Horus takes vengeance upon those who are in the following of Set.’ And the Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra, the giver of life, takes vengeance on his enemies, and he leads each of them away captive. And he shall live forever!” The Sem says: “Horus, here are the pupils (?) of your eyes. Horus, here are the pupils (?) of your eyes. Horus, here are the pupils (?) of your eyes. Horus, here are the pupils (?) of your eyes.”
Censing the Goddesses and the Offering to All the Gods
9The Sem says: “O statue of the Osiris, king Men-Maat-Ra, giver of life, like Ra, forever and forever, the Eye of Horus has been presented to you, and the odour of it is to you.” The priest censing the uraeus says: “Censings of purification to the goddess Urt-hekat. And to Uatchit, the Lady of the House which is within the Flame. And to Sekhit-Neserit-Uatchit of the cities Pe-Tep. And to Unnit-Menhit-Nut-she (?) of Het-ur. And to Resenit, Mehenit, Seshenit, Nebt-Khabes, and Nebt-Hetepit. And to Taatit, and to Hekenit [before her father Ra]. “Your purifications are the purifications of the Mas; the Mas being united to the crown, heaven shines brightly. Your purifications are the purifications of the Khabu; the Khabu being united to the crown, heaven shines brightly. Horus has purified you, and Set has censed you. “Purified are you, O male gods, and censed are you, O goddesses, and you have obtained your fluid of life through Ur-hekat, through Sekhit, through Sekhit, through Neserit, through Neserit, through Hetepit, through Hetepit. “There is an offering to you, O all you gods, O all you goddesses, and his hands are full of your love; there is an offering, and there is a happy face to king Men-Maat-Ra, giver of life, [who is] happy on this day.”
The Thirtieth Ceremony: Setting the Statue in the Hetchet Shrine
10The Sem priest said: “O Smeriu, the god comes to his place of protection. O Smeriu, the god comes to his place of protection. O Smeriu, the god comes to his place of protection. O Smeriu, the god comes to his place of protection.” The Kher heb then said: “O you Nine Smeriu, bring along the statue, and carry him [safely], and let him not fall down among you.” And as they were carrying the statue he said: “Hail, you sons of Horus, Amseth, Hapi, Tuamutef, and Qebhsennuf, advance, and come with your father, and carry him by means of the sledge, and bear him along. “Hail, Osiris! I have placed the sons of Horus with you, and they bear you along, and you are strong by reason of them. “Hail, you sons of Horus, Amseth, Hapi, Tuamutef, and Qebhsennuf, advance with your father, and bear him up, and let him not slip through your hands. “Hail, Osiris! They bear you up, like Horus on the Hennu sledge. You are raised up by it, like the gods, in its name of ‘Seker.’ You are united to it, and are made strong in the South and in the North, even as is Horus on it (i.e., his sledge).” Then the Kher heb said: “O priest, place the statue in the Hetchet Shrine.” And when the Kher heb had opened the doors of the Hetchet, he said: “The doors of heaven are opened. The doors of the House of the God are thrown back wide. And the House is opened for its Lord. “Let me come forth [as] he shall come forth. Let me enter in [as] he shall enter in. O may the God enter into it! “I am Thoth. I do not know whether the God will enter into it, for I have made myself to be without knowledge. What I know that soul which is ignorant of the thing that it abominates does not know. Let the door be thrust open by the god.” And the Kher heb also said: “I am Horus; my father is Osiris. I have smitten the phallus of Set with my hand. The God is in his house, and he rests in the arms of his father Osiris. “Your happiness is to you, O Osiris, and you have magical powers. Your father Osiris places you in his arms in his name of ‘Khut’ (i.e., horizon), in which Ra revolves. Life is given to you before your father Osiris. “Thoth comes to you, and he brings to you the Eye of Horus, and you become strong through it, and you rest in it. You have life, like a god, at the head of the gods forever.” And the Kher heb said: “Hetchet shrine (i.e., shining one), greatness is to you. Temi sledge (i.e., perfect one), the sledge is to you. Aat standard (i.e., that which does not diminish), greatness is to you. Arti Set (i.e., the two jawbones of Set), your jaws are to you. “Beneret qemat (i.e., sweetness of the South), Thoth has delivered the Eye of Horus from its enemies in its name of ‘Eye of the South.’ Thoth has carried it to Horus in its name of ‘Shepset’ (Holy One). Thoth has delivered (shef) it for Horus [from Set] in its name of ‘Shefit’ (Deliverer). Thoth has made it to be at peace (sehetep) with Horus in its name of ‘Hetepit’ (Pacifier). Thoth has made it triumphant (smaat) for Horus in its name of ‘Maat’ (Truth). Thoth has reckoned it up (sapi) for Horus in its name of ‘Apit’ (Reckoner).” When the statue was on the sledge the Kher heb said: “The beauties of this god are exalted.” And he also said: “Splendour is with you, and majesty is with you. The sledge shall never perish with you in it, and the sledge shall be with you.”
