Chapter 82

1 And now, my son Methuselah, I am recounting and writing down all these things for you, and I have revealed everything to you, and given you books about all these: so keep, my son Methuselah, the books from your father’s hand, and make sure that you pass them on to future generations. 2 I have given you and your children Wisdom, so that you and they can pass it on to their children through the generations, this Wisdom that surpasses their understanding. 3 And those who comprehend it will not rest, but will listen attentively to learn this Wisdom, and it will please them more than the finest food. 4 Blessed are all the righteous, blessed are all those who walk in the path of righteousness and do not sin like the sinners, throughout all their days while the sun travels the sky, entering and exiting the portals for thirty days with the leaders of thousands of stars, along with the four that are added which divide the four seasons of the year, which guide them and join them for four days. 5 Because of them, people will err and not include them in the full count of the year: indeed, people will err, and not accurately recognize them. 6 For they are part of the yearly count and are accurately recorded there forever, one in the first portal, one in the third, one in the fourth, and one in the sixth, and the year is completed in three hundred and sixty-four days. 7 And the accounting of this is precise, and the recorded count is exact; for the lights, months, festivals, years, and days, Uriel has shown and revealed to me, to whom the Lord of all creation has assigned the army of heaven. 8 And he has authority over night and day in the sky to make the light illuminate men—sun, moon, and stars, and all the powers of the heavens that move in their orbits. 9 And these are the orders of the stars, which stay in their places, and in their times and festivals and months. 10 And these are the names of those who lead them, who ensure they arrive at their appropriate times, in their orders, in their seasons, in their months, in their periods of rule, and in their positions. 11 Their four leaders who divide the year into four parts go first; and after them, the twelve leaders of the orders who divide the months; and for the three hundred and sixty days, there are leaders over thousands who divide the days; and for the four extra days, there are leaders who split the four parts of the year. 12 And these leaders over thousands are added between leader and leader, each behind their station, but their leaders make the division. 13 And these are the names of the leaders who divide the four parts of the year which are ordained: Mîlkî'êl, Hel'emmêlêk, and Mêl'êjal, and Nârêl. 14 And the names of those who lead them: Adnâr'êl, and Îjâsûsa'êl, and 'Elômê'êl—these three follow the leaders of the orders, and there is one that follows the three leaders of the orders which follow those leaders of stations that divide the four parts of the year. 15 At the beginning of the year Melkejâl rises first and rules, who is named Tam'âinî and sun, and all the days of his rule are ninety-one days. 16 And these are the signs of the days that are to be observed on earth during his rule: sweat, and heat, and calm; and all the trees bear fruit, and leaves appear on all the trees, and the wheat is harvested, and the roses bloom, and all the flowers that emerge in the field, but the trees of the winter season wither. 17 And these are the names of the leaders who are under them: Berka'êl, Zêlebs'êl, and another who is added, a leader of a thousand, called Hîlujâseph: and the days of the rule of this leader are at an end. 18 The next leader after him is Hel'emmêlêk, whom one calls the shining sun, and all the days of his light are ninety-one days. 19 And these are the signs of his days on earth: intense heat and dryness, and the trees ripen their fruits and produce all their fruits ripe and ready, and the sheep mate and become pregnant, and all the fruits of the earth are harvested, and everything that is in the fields, and the winepress: these things occur during the days of his rule. 20 These are the names, and the orders, and the leaders of those heads of thousands: Gîdâ'ijal, Kê'êl, and Hê'êl, and the name of the head of a thousand which is added to them, Asfâ'êl: and the days of his rule are at an end.

Summary

1 Enoch describes itself using the same language Sirach uses for the Torah, similarly presenting its own wisdom as life-giving instruction preserved in a book for future generations.

Sirach 24:33

Deuterocanon · Ben Sira, Ecclesiasticus
31 I said, “I will water my garden, and will drench my garden bed.” Behold, my stream became a river, and my river became a sea. 32 I will yet bring instruction to light as the morning, and will make these things clear from far away. 33 I will continue to pour out teaching like prophecy, and leave it to all generations. 34 See that I have not labored for myself only, but for all those who diligently seek wisdom.

"... A comparison of this text with Sirach 24 indicates that both posit functionally identical views of wisdom. According to ben Sira, wisdom is a heavenly entity, which has been embodied in a book, viz., the Mosaic Torah (verse 23), and whose function is to give life to those who listen and obey. The sage develops the idea by describing his exposition of the Torah as a natural and necessary extension of the life-giving function of the Torah (verses 23–34). Moreover, in verse 33 he characterizes his book as a deposit left for the benefit of “the generations of eternity”. Enoch refers to his books in a similar way. They are authoritative instruction that is the deposit of heavenly wisdom, which gives life like food, and they are the product of a “scribe” (12:4), who has left his books for “the generations of eternity” ..."
