Texts in Conversation
In the Greek Septuagint version of this psalm, the singer answers his deliverance by receiving a cup of salvation and calling on the name of God. Paul uses similar language, the cup of blessing, for the cup his community blesses and shares.

“... Then the psalmist gives thanks, using the expression of lifting up “the cup of salvation” (116:13 [cf. Paul’s use of “the cup of blessing” in 1 Cor. 10:16]): “I will lift up the cup of salvation and call on the name of the LORD.” C. The Context in Judaism. Martin (1986: 83) notes that “the substance of the quotation” from Ps. 116 “is without parallel in the use the rabbis make of the OT.” Perhaps the general idea of the suffering righteous person as expressed in this psalm may be in Paul’s mind concerning his own ministry as well. If so, then he sees himself in a tradition present in both biblical and extrabiblical Jewish writings (cf., e.g., Pss. 22; 30; 34; 40; 118; 130; T. Jos. 1:3–7; see Thrall 1994–2000: 1:329–30). ...”
