Mesopotamia represents a broad cultural and geographic area situated between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, covering parts of modern Iraq and surrounding regions. Over many centuries, it was home to societies such as the Sumerians, Akkadians, Babylonians, and Assyrians. These cultures developed urban centers, writing, law, religious literature, and administrative systems that influenced later Near Eastern and Mediterranean traditions including Israel.
