4 Ezra is a theological and apocalyptic reaction to the destruction of Jerusalem and the Temple in 70 C.E. The figure of Ezra is used as a pseudonym and is depicted as mourning the fate of the people of Israel and raising questions of God's justice and covenant promises. He is shown moving from anger at God to professing hope.
