Summary

Date: 150-100 B.C.E.

1 Esdras retells the end of 2 Chronicles, the book of Ezra, and part of Nehemiah in Greek, rearranging the order of events and adding a story found nowhere else. Three young men of King Darius's bodyguard hold a contest over what is strongest, and Zerubbabel wins by arguing for women and then for truth, so that as his prize he asks the king to let the Jews rebuild Jerusalem and its temple. Josephus follows 1 Esdras rather than Ezra when he tells the story of the return from exile in his Antiquities. The Greek Septuagint translation calls the book Esdras A, and the Latin Vulgate prints it in an appendix as 3 Esdras.
