The tradition of “hidden manna” developed from the idea that the heavenly food given to Israel in the wilderness was preserved for the future. In the Aramaic Targums, manna is said to have been created at the end of creation and saved until the distant future. Jewish texts such as 2 Maccabees connect this to Jeremiah hiding the ark, and Revelation promises it as a reward to the faithful.

If not, I will come against you quickly and make war against those people with the sword of my mouth. 17 The one who has an ear had better hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquers, I will give him some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, and on that stone will be written a new name that no one can understand except the one who receives it.’

Why hast thou brought us out into this wilderness to kill all this congregation with hunger?
