About this book
Chapter 5

1 This is the book of the generations of Adam. When God created man, he made him in the likeness of God. 2 He created them male and female, and he blessed them and named them Man when they were created.

3 And Adam lived one hundred and thirty years, and fathered [a son] in his own likeness, according to his image, and named him Seth. 4 The days of Adam after he fathered Seth were eight hundred years, and he fathered sons and daughters. 5 All the days that Adam lived were nine hundred and thirty years, and he died.

6 And Seth lived one hundred and five years, and fathered Enosh. 7 Seth lived eight hundred and seven years after he fathered Enosh, and fathered sons and daughters. 8 All the days of Seth were nine hundred and twelve years, and he died.

9 And Enosh lived ninety years, and fathered Kenan. 10 Enosh lived eight hundred and fifteen years after he fathered Kenan, and fathered sons and daughters. 11 All the days of Enosh were nine hundred and five years, and he died.

12 And Kenan lived seventy years, and fathered Mahalalel. 13 Kenan lived eight hundred and forty years after he fathered Mahalalel, and fathered sons and daughters. 14 All the days of Kenan were nine hundred and ten years, and he died

15 And Mahalalel lived sixty-five years, and fathered Jared. 16 Mahalalel lived eight hundred and thirty years after he fathered Jared, and fathered sons and daughters. 17 All the days of Mahalalel were eight hundred and ninety-five years, and he died.

18 And Jared lived sixty-two years, and fathered Enoch. 19 Jared lived seven hundred and eighty-five years after he fathered Enoch, and fathered sons and daughters. 20 All the days of Jared were eight hundred and forty-seven years, and he died.

21 And Enoch lived sixty-five years, and fathered Methuselah. 22 Enoch walked with God for three hundred years after he fathered Methuselah, and fathered sons and daughters. 23 All the days of Enoch were three hundred and sixty-five years. 24 Enoch walked with God, and he was gone, for God took him.

25 And Methuselah had lived sixty-seven years, and fathered Lamech. 26 Methuselah lived six hundred and fifty-three years after he fathered Lamech, and fathered sons and daughters. 27 All the days of Methuselah were seven hundred and twenty years, and he died.

28 And Lamech lived fifty-three years, and fathered a son, 29 and named him Noah, saying: “Out of the ground which Shema has cursed this one shall give us relief from our deeds and from the toil of our hands.” 30 Lamech lived six hundred years after the birth of Noah, and fathered sons and daughters. 31 All the days of Lamech were six hundred and fifty-three years, and he died.

32 Noah was five hundred years old, and fathered Shem, Ham, and Japheth.

Summary

Genesis 5 describes Methuselah with a lifespan of 969 years in the Hebrew Bible but 720 years in the Samaritan Pentateuch. The Samaritan version shortens the lives of the patriarchs before Noah to fix the timeline, so they die by the year of the flood.

Passages

Genesis 5:27

Hebrew Bible
26 Methuselah lived 782 years after he became the father of Lamech, and he had other sons and daughters. 27 The entire lifetime of Methuselah was 969 years, and then he died. 28 When Lamech had lived 182 years, he had a son. 29 He named him Noah, saying, “This one will bring us comfort from our labor and from the painful toil of our hands because of the ground that the Lord has cursed.”

... The relatively earlier chronology for preflood patriarchs reflected in the Samaritan Pentateuch edition of Genesis 5 connected with the implicit flood-focus of much of the previously discussed Toledot book. As we have seen, that book distinguished between pre- (Genesis 5*) and postflood (Genesis 11:10-26) primeval patriarchs, while orienting its Toledot section about Noah around a dating of the flood (Genesis 9:28-29; compare 7:6). In accordance with this general flood orientation in the Toledot book, the chronology of the last five preflood patriarchs that is reflected in the Samaritan Pentateuch features a contrast between Enoch and Noah (who were spared death in the flood) on the one hand and Jared, Methusaleh, and Lamech (who die in the flood) on the other. ...
