Chapter 26

1 Also, you shall make the tabernacle [with] ten curtains of fine twisted linen, blue, and purple, and scarlet; you shall make them [with] cherubim made by a skilled craftsman. 2 The length of each curtain shall be twenty-eight cubits, and the width of each curtain four cubits; all the curtains shall have the same dimensions. 3 And five curtains shall be joined together to one another, and [the other] five curtains shall be joined to one another. 4 And you shall make loops of blue on the edge of one curtain, in the edge of the [first] set, and you shall do the same in the edge of the outermost curtain in the second set. 5 You shall make fifty loops in the one curtain, and fifty loops in the edge of the curtain in the second set; the loops shall be opposite one another. 6 And you shall make fifty clasps of gold, and join the curtains to one another with the clasps, and the tabernacle shall be one.

7 And you shall make curtains of goats’ [hair] for a tent over the tabernacle; you shall make eleven curtains. 8 The length of each curtain [shall be] thirty cubits, and the width of each curtain four cubits; the eleven curtains shall have the same dimensions. 9 And you shall join five curtains by themselves, and six curtains by themselves, and shall double over the sixth curtain at the front of the tent. 10 And you shall make fifty loops on the edge of the outermost curtain in the first set, and you shall make fifty loops on the edge of the second joining curtain. 11 And you shall make fifty clasps of bronze, and put the clasps into the loops, and join the tent together, so that it may be one. 12 And the overhanging part that remains of the curtains of the tent, the half curtain that remains, shall hang to the back of the tabernacle. 13 And the cubit on the one side, and the cubit on the other side, which remains in the length of the curtains of the tent, shall hang to the sides of the tabernacle on this side and on that side, to cover it. 14 And you shall make a covering for the tent of rams’ skins dyed red and a covering of black skins above.

15 And you shall make the boards for the tabernacle of acacia wood, upright. 16 The length of each board [shall be] ten cubits, [and] its width a cubit and a half. 17 Each board [shall] have two projecting joints, joined one to another; you shall do the same for all the boards of the tabernacle. 18 And you shall make the boards for the tabernacle: twenty boards for the south side southward. 19 And you shall make forty sockets of silver under the twenty boards; two sockets under one board for its two pins, and two sockets under another board for its two pins. 20 And for the second side of the tabernacle, on the north side, you shall make twenty boards, 21 and their forty sockets of silver; two sockets under one board, and two sockets under another board. 22 And for the rear of the tabernacle westward you shall make six boards. 23 And you shall make two boards for the corners of the tabernacle in the rear. 24 And they shall match at the bottom; they shall also match toward the top, at the first ring. It shall be this way for both of them; they shall be for the two corners. 25 And there shall be eight boards, and their sockets of silver, sixteen sockets; two sockets for each board.

26 And you shall make bars of acacia wood, five for the boards of the one side of the tabernacle, 27 and five bars for the boards of the other side of the tabernacle, and five bars for the boards of the side of the tabernacle, for the rear westward. 28 And the middle bar in the middle of the boards shall pass through from end to end. 29 And you shall overlay the boards with gold, and make their rings of gold for places for the bars, and you shall overlay the bars with gold. 30 And you shall set up the tabernacle according to the design which you were shown on the mountain.

31 And you shall make a veil of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twisted linen; they shall make it with cherubim, the work of a skilled craftsman. 32 And you shall hang it on four pillars of acacia overlaid with gold; their hooks shall be of gold, on four sockets of silver. 33 And you shall hang up the veil under the clasps, and shall bring the ark of the testimony in there behind the veil, and the veil shall separate the holy [place] from the most holy for you. 34 And you shall put the ark-cover on the ark of the testimony in the most holy place. 35 And you shall set the table outside the veil, and the lampstand opposite the table on the side of the tabernacle toward the south. And you shall put the table on the north side. And you shall make an altar to burn incense on; you shall make it of acacia wood. Its length [shall be] a cubit, and its width a cubit; it shall be square, and its height [shall be] two cubits. Its horns shall be [of one piece] with it. And you shall overlay it with pure gold, its top, and its sides around [it], and its horns. And you shall make for it a molding of gold around [it]. And you shall make two golden rings for it under its molding; you shall make them on its two ribs, on its two sides. And they shall be for places for poles with which to carry it. And you shall make the poles of acacia wood, and overlay them with gold. And you shall put it in front of the veil that is by the ark of the testimony, where I will meet with you. And Aaron shall burn incense of sweet spices on it every morning; when he tends the lamps, he shall burn it. And when Aaron lights the lamps at twilight, he shall burn it, incense offered continually in the presence of Shema throughout your generations. You shall offer no unauthorized incense on it, or burned offering, or grain offering, and you shall pour no drink offering on it. And Aaron shall make atonement on its horns once a year; with the blood of the sin offering of atonement he shall make atonement for it once a year throughout your generations. It is most holy to Shema.

36 And you shall make a screen for the entrance of the tent of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twisted linen, the work of the embroiderer. 37 And you shall make for the screen five pillars of acacia, and overlay them with pure gold; their hooks [shall be] of gold, and you shall cast five sockets of bronze for them.

Summary

Exodus 26 uses the unusual idiom “a woman to her sister” to describe the joining of tabernacle curtains. The Samaritan Pentateuch replaces this with a more literal expression, removing the idiom.

Passages

Exodus 26:3

Hebrew Bible
1 “The tabernacle itself you are to make with ten curtains of fine twisted linen and blue and purple and scarlet; you are to make them with cherubim that are the work of an artistic designer. 2 The length of each curtain is to be 42 feet, and the width of each curtain is to be 6 feet—the same size for each of the curtains. 3 Five curtains are to be joined, a woman to her sister9, and the other five curtains are to be joined, a woman to her sister9. 4 You are to make loops of blue material along the edge of the end curtain in one set, and in the same way you are to make loops in the outer edge of the end curtain in the second set. 5 You are to make 50 loops on the one curtain, and you are to make 50 loops on the end curtain which is on the second set, so that the loops are opposite one to another.

"... In the same way it is employed: in addition to its primary meaning “friend,” it may also denote kinsman. The expression occurs sixteen times in the Pentateuch (Genesis 11:3, 7; 15:10; 31:49; 43:33; Exodus 11:2; 18:7, 16; 21:14, 18; 22:6, 9, 13; 32:27; 33:11; Deuteronomy 22:26). In all these instances, the Samaritan Pentateuch and the Masoretic text exhibit the same reading. This is equally true of the 16 occurrences of the term of speech (Genesis 9:5; 13:11; 26:31; 37:19; 42:21, 28; Exodus 10:23; 16:15; 32:27, 29; Leviticus 7:10; 25:46; 26:37; Numbers 14:4; Deuteronomy 1:16; 25:11). As against this, in two cases in which the expression is not applied to human beings, the text of the Samaritan Pentateuch differs from that of the Masoretic text (Exodus 25:20; 26:3; 37:9) ..."

  • Interesting, in this case it looks like the Samaritan bible has removed an idiom from the original Hebrew?
