The Coming King and the Ordered Heavens

Psalm 18

1 Lord, Your mercy is over the works of Your hands forever; Your goodness is over Israel with a rich gift. 2 Your eyes watch over them, so that none of them lacks anything; Your ears listen to the hopeful prayer of the poor. 3 Your judgments (are executed) upon the whole earth in mercy; And Your love (is) toward Abraham’s descendants, the children of Israel. 4 Your discipline is upon us as (upon) a firstborn son, an only child, to turn back the obedient soul from foolishness (that is committed) in ignorance.

5 May God cleanse Israel in preparation for the day of mercy and blessing, in preparation for the day of choice when He brings back His anointed.

6 Blessed shall be those who live in those days, because they shall see the goodness of the Lord which He shall carry out for the generation that is to come, 7 Under the rod of discipline of the Lord's anointed in the fear of his God, In the spirit of wisdom and righteousness and strength; 8 so that he may guide (every) man in the works of righteousness by the fear of God, so that he may strengthen them all in the Lord’s presence, 9 A good generation (living) in the fear of God in the days of mercy. Selah.

10 Our God is great and glorious, living in the highest heavens. (It is He) who has placed the lights (of heaven) in (their) courses for determining seasons from year to year, and they have not turned aside from the way which He appointed for them. 11 In the fear of God (they pursue) their path every day, From the day God created them and forevermore. 12 And they have not strayed since the day He created them. Since ancient generations they have not withdrawn from their path, unless God commanded them (so to do) by the command of His servants.

Summary

Joshua says the sun and moon stopped during battle, and Psalms of Solomon 18 praises them for their obedience. The contrast was used to show how the heavens are obedient while people are not, using cosmic stability to compare with human disobedience.

Passages

Joshua 10:13

Hebrew Bible
11 As they fled from Israel on the slope leading down from Beth Horon, the Lord threw down on them large hailstones from the sky, all the way to Azekah. They died—in fact, more died from the hailstones than the Israelites killed with the sword. 12 The day the Lord delivered the Amorites over to the Israelites, Joshua prayed to the Lord before Israel: “O sun, stand still over Gibeon; O moon, over the Valley of Aijalon!” 13 The sun stood still and the moon stood motionless while the nation took vengeance on its enemies. The event is recorded in the Scroll of the Upright One. The sun stood motionless in the middle of the sky and did not set for about a full day. 14 There has not been a day like it before or since. The Lord listened to a human being, for the Lord fought for Israel! 15 Then Joshua and all Israel returned to the camp at Gilgal.

"... Elsewhere in the Old Testament, lawfulness is attributed to the courses of the sun, moon, and stars, the ebb and flow of the tides, the alternation of seasons, and even to meteorological phenomena like the wind, rain, and lightning ... The stress here on nature’s obedience to God’s word was intended as a contrast to the foolishness of humans who disregard God’s (moral) laws, as the context makes abundantly clear (Sirach 16; 17). The contrast between the obedience of the luminaries and the rebelliousness of humans was made even more explicit in an early segment of 1 Enoch, and it reappeared in the Testament of Naphtali, the Psalms of Solomon, and the Dead Sea Scrolls ..."

  • I'm curious, since I came from reading Joshua 10:12-13... Why is it I can't seem to find Sefer Ha-Yashar/Book of Jasher on this site?
