Burnt Offerings

Chapter 1

1 When Moses finished setting up the tent, anointed and consecrated it and all its equipment, and the altar and all its equipment, Moses thought to himself, “Mount Sinai was consecrated only for a time and anointed only for a time, yet I did not go up it until I was addressed from before the Lord. The tent of meeting is consecrated forever and anointed forever; it is right that we should not enter it until I am addressed from before the Lord.” Then the Word called to Moses, and the Lord spoke with him from the tent of meeting, saying: 2 “Speak with the sons of Israel and tell them: When any of you brings an offering before the Lord, bring your offerings from livestock, from cattle or sheep. 3 If his offering is a burnt offering to the name of the Lord, he must bring a male, whole and without a defect. ⟨He must bring it to the entrance of the tent of meeting,⟩ to find favor before the Lord. 4 He must rest his hands on the head of the burnt offering, and it will be accepted to make atonement for him. 5 He must slaughter the bull before the Lord, and Aaron’s sons, the priests, must present the blood ⟨and splash the blood⟩ against every side of the altar at the entrance of the tent of meeting. 6 He must skin the burnt offering and cut it into pieces. 7 Aaron’s sons, the priests, must put fire on the altar and stack wood on the fire. 8 Aaron’s sons, the priests, must arrange the pieces, the head, and the body on the wood on the altar’s fire. 9 He must wash its internal organs and legs with water, and the priest must arrange everything on the altar as a burnt offering, an offering accepted as a pleasing aroma before the Lord. 10 If his offering for a burnt offering is from the flock, from lambs or young goats, he must bring a male, whole and without a defect. 11 He must slaughter it at the foot of the altar on its north side, before the Lord, and the sons of Aaron the priest must splash its blood against every side of the altar. 12 They must cut it into pieces, its head, and its body, and the priest must arrange them on the wood on the altar’s fire. 13 He must wash its internal organs and legs with water. The priest must bring everything and arrange it on the altar; it is a burnt offering, an offering accepted as a pleasing aroma before the Lord. 14 If his burnt offering to the name of the Lord is a bird, he must bring his offering from turtledoves or young pigeons. 15 The priest must bring it to the altar, pinch off its head, and arrange it on the altar. Its blood must be drained against the side of the altar. 16 He must remove its crop with its contents and throw it beside the altar on the east, at the place where the ashes are poured out. 17 He must tear it open by its wings without separating it. The priest must arrange it on the altar, on the wood on the fire. It is a burnt offering, an offering accepted as a pleasing aroma before the Lord.

Grain Offerings

Chapter 2

1 When a person brings a grain offering to the name of the Lord, his offering must be fine flour. He must pour oil on it and put frankincense on it. 2 He must bring it to Aaron’s sons, the priests, and take a handful of its fine flour and its best part, with all its frankincense. The priest must arrange its memorial portion on the altar, an offering accepted as a pleasing aroma before the Lord. 3 What remains of the grain offering belongs to Aaron and his sons; it is most holy among the Lord’s offerings. 4 When you bring a grain offering baked in an oven, it must be fine flour, unleavened cakes mixed with oil, and unleavened wafers spread with oil. 5 If your offering is a grain offering cooked on a griddle, it must be unleavened fine flour mixed with oil. 6 Break it into pieces and pour oil over it; it is a grain offering. 7 If your offering is a grain offering from a frying pan, offer fine flour mixed with oil. 8 Bring the grain offering prepared from these to the name of the Lord. The offerer must bring it to the priest, who must arrange it on the altar. 9 The priest must lift the memorial portion from the grain offering and arrange it on the altar, an offering accepted as a pleasing aroma before the Lord. 10 What remains of the grain offering belongs to Aaron and his sons; it is most holy among the Lord’s offerings. 11 No grain offering they bring to the name of the Lord may be offered leavened, for you must not bring an offering before the Lord from anything fermented or sweetened with honey. 12 You may bring them before the Lord as an offering of your firstfruits, but they must not be accepted on the altar as a pleasing aroma. 13 Season every offering of your grain offerings with salt. Do not leave the salt of your God’s covenant out of your grain offerings; bring salt with all your offerings. 14 If you bring a grain offering of firstfruits to the name of the Lord, bring lightly fire-roasted ears of grain, crushed grain, as your firstfruits grain offering. 15 Put oil on it and place frankincense on it; it is a grain offering. 16 The priests must arrange its memorial portion, some of the crushed grain and its best part, with all its frankincense, as an offering before the Lord.

Sacrifices of Holy Things

Chapter 3

1 If his offering is a sacrifice of holy things from cattle, whether male or female, he must bring it before the Lord whole and without a defect. 2 He must rest his hand on his offering’s head and slaughter it at the entrance of the tent of meeting. Aaron’s sons, the priests, must splash its blood against every side of the altar. 3 From the sacrifice of holy things he must bring as an offering before the Lord the fat covering the belly and all the fat on the internal organs, 4 the two kidneys with the fat on them by the loins, and the appendage of the liver’s lobe, which he must remove with the kidneys. 5 Aaron’s sons must arrange it on the altar, over the burnt offering on the wood on the fire, an offering accepted as a pleasing aroma before the Lord. 6 If his offering as a sacrifice of holy things to the name of the Lord is from the flock, whether male or female, he must bring it whole and without a defect. 7 If the offering he brings is a lamb, he must bring it before the Lord. 8 He must rest his hand on his offering’s head and slaughter it before the tent of meeting. Aaron’s sons must splash its blood against every side of the altar. 9 From the sacrifice of holy things he must bring its fat as an offering before the Lord: its whole fat tail, which he must remove close to the backbone, the fat covering the belly, and all the fat on the internal organs, 10 the two kidneys with all the fat on them by the loins, and the appendage of the liver’s lobe, which he must remove with the kidneys. 11 The priest must arrange it on the altar as food, an offering to the name of the Lord. 12 If his offering is a young goat, he must bring it before the Lord. 13 He must rest his hand on its head and slaughter it before the tent of meeting. Aaron’s sons must splash its blood against every side of the altar. 14 From it he must bring his offering as an offering before the Lord: the fat covering the belly and all the fat on the internal organs, 15 the two kidneys with the fat on them by the loins, and the appendage of the liver’s lobe, which he must remove with the kidneys. 16 The priest must arrange them on the altar as food, an offering with a pleasing aroma. All fat belongs to the name of the Lord. 17 This is a lasting statute throughout your generations wherever you live: you must eat neither fat nor blood.”

Sin Offerings

Chapter 4

1 The Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 2 “Speak with the sons of Israel and say: If anyone unintentionally strays from any of the Lord’s commands by doing something that must not be done, and transgresses one of them,

The Anointed Priest’s Bull Offering

3 if the anointed priest sins and brings guilt on the people, he must bring a young bull, whole and without a defect, to the name of the Lord as a sin offering for the sin he committed. 4 He must bring the bull to the entrance of the tent of meeting before the Lord, rest his hands on the bull’s head, and slaughter the bull before the Lord. 5 The anointed priest must take some of the bull’s blood and bring it into the tent of meeting. 6 The priest must dip his finger in the blood and sprinkle some of the blood seven times before the Lord against the front of the sanctuary curtain. 7 The priest must put some of the blood on the horns of the altar of fragrant incense before the Lord in the tent of meeting. He must pour all the rest of the bull’s blood at the base of the burnt-offering altar at the entrance of the tent of meeting. 8 He must lift all the fat from the bull of the sin offering: the fat covering the belly and all the fat on the internal organs, 9 the two kidneys with the fat on them by the loins, and the appendage of the liver’s lobe, which he must remove with the kidneys, 10 as they are taken from the bull of the sacrifice of holy things. The priest must arrange them on the burnt-offering altar. 11 The bull’s skin and all its flesh, with its head and legs, its internal organs and dung, 12 he must take them outside the camp to a clean place, where the ashes are poured out, and burn the whole bull on wood in a fire. It must be burned where the ashes are poured out.

The Congregation’s Offering

13 If the whole congregation of Israel sins unintentionally, and the matter escapes the assembly’s notice, and they transgress one of the commands by doing something that must not be done, and become guilty, 14 when the sin they committed becomes known, the assembly must bring a young bull as a sin offering, bringing it to the entrance of the tent of meeting. 15 The wise men of the people of the congregation must rest their hands on the bull’s head before the Lord, and slaughter the bull before the Lord. 16 The anointed priest must bring some of the bull’s blood to the tent of meeting. 17 The priest must dip his finger in the blood and sprinkle it seven times before the Lord against the outside of the curtain. 18 He must put some of the blood on the horns of the altar before the Lord in the tent of meeting. He must pour all the rest of the blood at the base of the burnt-offering altar at the entrance of the tent of meeting. 19 He must lift all its fat from it, and the priest must arrange it on the altar. 20 He must treat the bull as he treated the bull of the sin offering; the same must be done with it. The priest must make atonement for them, and they will be forgiven and released from their guilt. 21 He must take the bull outside the camp and burn it as he burned the first bull. It is the assembly’s sin offering.

The Anointed Priest’s Goat Offering

22 If the anointed priest sins and unintentionally transgresses any of the commands of the Lord his God by doing something that must not be done, and becomes guilty, 23 or if the sin he committed is made known to him, he must bring as his offering a young male goat, whole and without a defect. 24 He must rest his hand on the goat’s head and slaughter it where the burnt offering is slaughtered before the Lord. It is the sin offering. 25 The priest must take some of the sin offering’s blood with his finger and put it on the horns of the burnt-offering altar. He must pour all the rest of the blood at the base of the burnt-offering altar. 26 He must arrange all its fat on the altar, like the fat of the sacrifice of holy things. The priest must make atonement for his sin, and he will be released from his guilt.

An Individual’s Offering

27 If any of the people of the land sins unintentionally by transgressing one of the Lord’s commands, doing something that must not be done, and becomes guilty, 28 or if the sin he committed is made known to him, he must bring as his offering a whole young goat for the sin he committed. 29 He must rest his hand on the sin offering’s head and slaughter the sin offering at the place of the burnt offering. 30 The priest must take some of its blood with his finger and put it on the horns of the burnt-offering altar. He must pour all the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. 31 He must remove all its fat as the fat is removed from the sacrifice of holy things. The priest must arrange it on the altar as a pleasing aroma to the name of the Lord. The priest must make atonement for him, and he will be forgiven and released from his guilt. 32 If he brings a lamb as his offering for sin, he must bring a female, whole and without a defect. 33 He must rest his hand on the sin offering’s head and slaughter it as a sin offering where the burnt offering is slaughtered. 34 The priest must take some of the sin offering’s blood with his finger and put it on the horns of the burnt-offering altar. He must pour all the rest of its blood at the base of the altar. 35 He must remove all its fat, as the lamb’s fat is removed from the sacrifice of holy things. The priest must arrange them on the altar over the Lord’s offerings. The priest must make atonement for the sin he committed, and he will be released from his guilt.

Offenses Requiring a Sin Offering

Chapter 5

1 If anyone sins by hearing a blasphemous oath, and he is a witness who has seen or knows the matter, but does not declare it, he will bear his guilt. 2 Or if anyone touches anything unclean, whether the carcass of an unclean wild animal, the carcass of unclean livestock, or the carcass of an unclean swarming creature, without knowing it, he becomes unclean and guilty. 3 Or if he touches any human uncleanness, whatever the uncleanness that makes a person unclean, without knowing it, when he becomes aware of it he becomes unclean and guilty. 4 Or if anyone speaks an oath with his lips to do harm or do good, in anything for which a person speaks an oath, without knowing it, when he becomes aware of it he becomes guilty in one of these matters. 5 When he becomes guilty in any of these matters, he must confess the sin he committed. 6 He must bring his guilt offering before the Lord for the sin he committed: a female from the flock, a lamb or a young female goat, as a sin offering. The priest must make atonement for his sin. 7 If he cannot afford to bring a lamb, he must bring two turtledoves or two young pigeons to the name of the Lord as his guilt offering for the sin he committed, one as a sin offering and one as a burnt offering. 8 He must bring them to the priest, who must offer the one for the sin offering first. He must pinch its head at the neck without separating it. 9 He must sprinkle some of the sin offering’s blood against the side of the altar, and drain the remaining blood at the base of the altar. It is a sin offering. 10 He must offer the second according to the prescribed order. The priest must make atonement for the sin he committed, and he will be forgiven and released from his guilt. 11 If he cannot afford two turtledoves or two young pigeons, he must bring as his offering for the sin he committed a tenth of a measure of fine flour as a sin offering. He must not pour oil on it or put frankincense on it, for it is the sin offering. 12 He must bring it to the priest, and the priest must take a handful of it as its memorial portion and arrange it on the altar over the Lord’s offerings. It is a sin offering. 13 The priest must make atonement for the sin he committed in any of these matters, and he will be forgiven and released from his guilt. What remains belongs to the priest, as with the grain offering.”

Guilt Offerings

14 The Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 15 “If anyone acts unfaithfully and sins unintentionally concerning the Lord’s holy things, he must bring his guilt offering before the Lord: a ram from the flock, whole and without a defect, valued in silver selas according to the sanctuary sela, as a guilt offering. 16 He must repay what he took from the holy things and add a fifth to it, giving it to the priest. The priest must make atonement for him with the ram of the guilt offering, and he will be forgiven and released from his guilt. 17 If anyone sins by transgressing one of the Lord’s commands, doing something that must not be done, even without knowing it, he becomes guilty and must bear his guilt. 18 He must bring to the priest a male lamb from the flock, whole and without a defect, valued for the guilt offering. The priest must make atonement for the unintentional sin he committed without knowing it, and he will be forgiven and released from his guilt. 19 It is the guilt offering. For the sin he committed he must bring the guilt offering before the Lord.”

Restitution for Dishonesty

20 The Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 21 “If a man sins and acts unfaithfully against the name of the Lord by denying that he holds a deposit from his neighbor, or concerning the acquisition of property, or robbery, or withholding what is due his neighbor, 22 or by finding something lost and concealing the truth about it, or swearing falsely in any of these acts by which a person sins, 23 when he has sinned and become guilty, he must return what he stole, what he withheld from his neighbor, the deposit entrusted to him, or the lost property he found, 24 or anything about which he swore falsely. He must repay the whole amount and add a fifth to it, giving it to its owner on the day he became guilty. 25 He must bring his guilt offering to the priest for the name of the Lord: a ram from the flock, whole and without a defect, at its valuation as a guilt offering. 26 The priest must make atonement for him before the Lord, and he will be released from guilt for anything he did that made him guilty.”

The Burnt Offering

Chapter 6

1 The Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 2 “Command Aaron and his sons: This is the decree of the Law for the burnt offering. The burnt offering must burn on the altar all night until morning, and the altar’s fire must be kept burning on it. 3 The priest must put on his linen garments, with linen trousers over his body, and lift the ashes to which the fire has reduced the burnt offering on the altar, placing them beside the altar. 4 He must take off his garments, put on other garments, and carry the ashes outside the camp to a clean place. 5 The fire must keep burning on the altar and never go out. The priest must burn wood on it every morning, arrange the burnt offering on it, and arrange the fat of the sacrifices of holy things on it. 6 Fire must burn on it continually; it must not go out.

The Grain Offering

7 This is the decree of the Law for the grain offering. Aaron’s sons must bring it before the Lord on the altar. 8 He must take a handful of the grain offering’s fine flour and its best part, with all the frankincense on the grain offering, and arrange it on the altar as a pleasing aroma, its memorial portion to the name of the Lord. 9 Aaron and his sons must eat what remains of it. It must be eaten unleavened in a holy place; they must eat it in the courtyard of the tent of meeting. 10 It must not be baked with leaven. I have given it as their share of his offerings. It is most holy, like the sin offering and the guilt offering. 11 Every male among Aaron’s sons may eat it, as a lasting statute throughout your generations from his offerings. Whoever touches them will become holy.”

The Priests’ Grain Offering

12 The Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 13 “This is the offering Aaron and his sons must bring before the Lord on the day he anoints them: a tenth of a measure of fine flour as a regular grain offering. Offer half in the morning and half at twilight. 14 It must be offered with oil on a griddle. Bring it sizzling; offer the grain offering’s pastries in pieces as a pleasing aroma before the Lord. 15 The priest anointed from among his sons to succeed him must offer it as a lasting statute before the Lord. All of it must be arranged on the altar. 16 Every grain offering of a priest must be offered whole; it must not be eaten.”

The Sin Offering

17 The Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 18 “Speak with Aaron and his sons: This is the decree of the Law for the sin offering. The sin offering must be slaughtered before the Lord where the burnt offering is slaughtered. It is most holy. 19 The priest who consecrates it must eat it; it must be eaten in a holy place, in the courtyard of the tent of meeting. 20 Whatever touches its flesh will become holy. ⟨If any of its blood is splashed on a garment,⟩ wash the part on which it was splashed in a holy place. 21 A clay vessel in which it is boiled must be broken. If it is boiled in a bronze vessel, the vessel must be scrubbed and rinsed with water. 22 Every male among the priests may eat it. It is most holy. 23 No sin offering whose blood is brought into the tent of meeting to make atonement within the sanctuary may be eaten; it must be burned in fire.

The Guilt Offering

Chapter 7

1 This is the decree of the Law for the guilt offering. It is most holy. 2 You must slaughter the guilt offering where you slaughter the burnt offering, and he must splash its blood against every side of the altar. 3 He must bring all its fat: the fat tail and the fat covering the internal organs, 4 the two kidneys with the fat on them by the loins, and the appendage of the liver’s lobe, which he must remove with the kidneys. 5 The priest must arrange them on the altar as an offering before the Lord. It is the guilt offering. 6 Every male among the priests may eat it. It must be eaten in a holy place; it is most holy. 7 The guilt offering is like the sin offering; one decree of the Law applies to them. They belong to the priest who makes atonement with them. 8 When a priest brings a person’s burnt offering, the skin of the burnt offering he brings belongs to that priest; it is his. 9 Every grain offering baked in an oven, or prepared in a frying pan or on a griddle, belongs to the priest who brings it; it is his. 10 Every grain offering, whether mixed with oil or dry, belongs to all Aaron’s sons equally.

Sacrifices of Holy Things

11 This is the decree of the Law for the sacrifice of holy things that he brings to the name of the Lord. 12 If he brings it as thanksgiving, he must bring with the sacrifice of holy things unleavened cakes mixed with oil, unleavened wafers mixed with oil, and sizzling cakes of fine flour mixed with oil. 13 He must bring his offering with cakes of leavened bread, along with the thanksgiving sacrifice of his holy things. 14 From each offering he must bring one as a contribution to the name of the Lord. It belongs to the priest who splashes the blood of the sacrifice of holy things. 15 The flesh of the thanksgiving sacrifice of his holy things must be eaten on the day he brings his offering. None of it may remain until morning. 16 If the sacrifice he brings fulfills a vow or is a voluntary offering, it must be eaten on the day he brings his offering, and what remains may be eaten the next day. 17 What remains of the flesh of the sacrifice of holy things must be burned in fire on the third day. 18 If any flesh of the sacrifice of holy things is eaten on the third day, the one who brought it will not be accepted with favor. It will not be credited to him; it will be rejected, and the person who eats any of it will bear his guilt. 19 Flesh that touches anything unclean must not be eaten; it must be burned in fire. Anyone who is clean may eat the flesh. 20 A person who eats flesh from the sacrifice of holy things set apart to the name of the Lord while he is unclean must be wiped out from among his people. 21 A person who touches anything unclean, whether human uncleanness, an unclean animal, or any unclean swarming creature, and eats flesh from the sacrifice of holy things before the Lord must be wiped out from among his people.”

Fat and Blood Must Not Be Eaten

22 The Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 23 “Speak with the sons of Israel and say: You must not eat any fat from a bull, a lamb, or a young goat. 24 Fat from an animal that dies or is killed may be used for any work, but you must never eat it. 25 Anyone who eats the flesh of an animal from which an offering is brought before the Lord must be wiped out from among his people. 26 You must not eat any blood, whether from birds or animals, wherever you live. 27 Any person who eats any blood must be wiped out from among his people.”

The Priests’ Portions

28 The Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 29 “Speak with the sons of Israel and say: Whoever brings a sacrifice of his holy things to the name of the Lord must bring his offering to the Lord from the sacrifice of his holy things. 30 His own hands must bring his offerings: the fat with the breast, the breast to wave as a wave offering before the Lord. 31 The priest must arrange the fat before the Lord, and the breast belongs to Aaron and his sons. 32 You must give the right thigh to the priest as a contribution from the sacrifice of your holy things. 33 The son of Aaron who brings the sacrifice of his holy things and its fat will have the right thigh as his share. 34 I have received the breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the contribution from the sons of Israel, from the sacrifice of their holy things. I have given them to Aaron the priest and his sons as a lasting statute from the sons of Israel. 35 This is the anointed share of Aaron and his sons from the Lord’s offerings on the day he brings them near to serve in the high priesthood before the Lord, 36 which the Lord commanded the sons of Israel to give them on the day he anointed them, as a lasting statute throughout their generations.” 37 This is the decree of the Law for the burnt offering, the grain offering, the sin offering, the guilt offering, ordination, and the sacrifice of holy things, 38 which the Lord commanded Moses on Mount Sinai on the day he commanded the sons of Israel to bring their offerings before the Lord in the wilderness of Sinai.

The Consecration of Aaron and His Sons

Chapter 8

1 The Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 2 “Take Aaron and his sons with him, the garments, the anointing oil, the bull of the sin offering, the two rams, and the basket of unleavened bread. 3 Gather all the people of the congregation at the entrance of the tent of meeting.” 4 Moses did as the Lord commanded him, and all the people of the congregation gathered at the entrance of the tent of meeting. 5 Moses told the people of the congregation, “This is what the Lord commanded to be done.” 6 Moses brought Aaron and his sons near and sanctified them with water. 7 He put the tunic on him and fastened the sash around him. He clothed him in the robe and put the ephod on him, fastening the ephod’s waistband around him and securing it with it. 8 He placed the breastpiece on him and put the Urim and Thummim in the breastpiece. 9 He put the turban on his head, and on the front of the turban he placed the gold ornament, the sanctuary’s crown, as the Lord commanded Moses. 10 Moses took the anointing oil and anointed the tabernacle, all its equipment, and everything in it, consecrating them. 11 He sprinkled some of it on the altar seven times and anointed the altar and all its equipment, the basin and its base, to consecrate it. 12 He poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head and anointed him to consecrate him. 13 Moses brought Aaron’s sons near, clothed them in tunics, fastened sashes around them, and put caps on them, as the Lord commanded Moses. 14 He brought the bull of the sin offering, and Aaron and his sons rested their hands on the head of the bull of the sin offering. 15 He slaughtered it. Moses took the blood and put it with his finger on the horns all around the altar, anointing the altar. He poured the blood at the base of the altar and consecrated it to make atonement for it. 16 He took all the fat on the internal organs, the appendage of the liver’s lobe, and the two kidneys with their fat. Moses arranged them on the altar. 17 He burned the bull, its skin, flesh, and dung, in fire outside the camp, as the Lord commanded Moses. 18 He brought the ram of the burnt offering, and Aaron and his sons rested their hands on the ram’s head. 19 He slaughtered it, and Moses splashed the blood against every side of the altar. 20 He cut the ram into pieces, and Moses arranged the head, the pieces, and the body. 21 He washed the internal organs and the leg with water, and Moses arranged the whole ram on the altar. It was a burnt offering with a pleasing aroma, an offering, as the Lord commanded Moses. 22 He brought the second ram, the ram of ordination, and Aaron and his sons rested their hands on the ram’s head. 23 He slaughtered it. Moses took some of its blood and put it on the tip of Aaron’s right ear, his right thumb, and the big toe of his right foot. 24 He brought Aaron’s sons near. Moses took some of the blood and put it on the tips of their right ears, their right thumbs, and the big toes of their right feet. Moses splashed the blood against every side of the altar. 25 He took the fat, the fat tail, all the fat on the internal organs, the appendage of the liver’s lobe, the two kidneys with their fat, and the right thigh. 26 From the basket of unleavened bread before the Lord, he took one unleavened cake, one cake of bread mixed with oil, and one wafer, placing them on the fat and the right thigh. 27 He put everything on Aaron’s palms and his sons’ palms, and waved them as a wave offering before the Lord. 28 Moses received them from their palms and arranged them on the altar over the burnt offering. They were ordination offerings with a pleasing aroma, an offering before the Lord. 29 Moses took the breast and waved it as a wave offering before the Lord. It was Moses’ share of the ram of ordination, as the Lord commanded Moses. 30 Moses took some of the anointing oil and some of the blood on the altar and sprinkled it on Aaron, his garments, and the garments of his sons with him. He consecrated Aaron, his garments, his sons, and his sons’ garments with him. 31 Moses told Aaron and his sons, “Boil the flesh at the entrance of the tent of meeting. Eat it there with the bread in the basket of ordination, as I commanded, saying: Aaron and his sons must eat it. 32 Burn what remains of the flesh and bread in fire. 33 You must not leave the entrance of the tent of meeting for seven days, until you have completed the days of your ordination, for seven days complete the offering of your hands. 34 The Lord commanded what was done today to be done to make atonement for you. 35 Remain at the entrance of the tent of meeting day and night for seven days, carrying out the Lord’s instructions, so that you do not die, for this is what I commanded.” 36 Aaron and his sons did everything the Lord commanded through Moses.

Aaron Begins His Priestly Service

Chapter 9

1 On the eighth day, at the end of the seven days of ordination, Moses called Aaron, his sons, and the wise men of Israel. 2 He told Aaron, “Take a bull calf as a sin offering and a ram as a burnt offering, whole and without a defect, and bring them before the Lord. 3 Speak with the sons of Israel and say: Take a young male goat as a sin offering, and a calf and a lamb a year old, whole and without a defect, as a burnt offering, 4 and a bull and a ram as a sacrifice of holy things to bring before the Lord, and a grain offering mixed with oil, for today the Memra of the Lord will be revealed to you.” 5 They took what Moses commanded to the entrance of the tent of meeting, and all the people of the congregation drew near and stood before the Lord. 6 Moses said, “This is what the Lord commanded you to do, so that the Glory of the Shekinah of the Lord may be revealed to you.” 7 Moses told Aaron, “Offer on the altar; bring your sin offering and your burnt offering, and make atonement for yourself and the people. Bring the people’s offerings and make atonement for them, as the Lord commanded.” 8 Aaron offered on the altar and slaughtered the calf of the sin offering that was his own. 9 Aaron’s sons brought him the blood. He dipped his finger in the blood and put it on the horns of the altar, pouring all the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. 10 He arranged the fat, the kidneys, and the appendage of the liver’s lobe from the sin offering on the altar, as the Lord commanded Moses. 11 He burned the flesh and the skin in fire outside the camp. 12 He slaughtered the burnt offering. Aaron’s sons handed him the blood, and he splashed it against every side of the altar. 13 They handed him the burnt offering piece by piece, with its head, and he arranged them on the altar. 14 He washed the internal organs and the legs and arranged them over the burnt offering on the altar. 15 He brought the people’s offering, taking the goat of the sin offering that was from the people. He slaughtered it and purified it like the first. 16 He brought the burnt offering and offered it according to the prescribed order. 17 He brought the grain offering, took a handful from it, and arranged it on the altar beside the morning burnt offering. 18 He slaughtered the bull and the ram, the sacrifice of holy things from the people. Aaron’s sons handed him the blood, and he splashed it against every side of the altar, 19 and the fat from the bull and ram, the fat tail, the fat covering the belly, the kidneys, and the appendage of the liver’s lobe. 20 They placed the fat on the breasts, and he arranged the fat on the altar. 21 Aaron waved the breasts and the right thigh as a wave offering before the Lord, as Moses commanded.

Aaron Blesses the People and Fire Consumes the Offerings

22 Aaron lifted his hands in prayer toward the people and blessed them. He came down from offering the sin offering, burnt offering, and sacrifice of holy things. 23 Moses and Aaron went into the tent of meeting, then came out and blessed the people. The Glory of the Shekinah of the Lord was revealed to all the people. 24 Fire came out from before the Lord and consumed the burnt offering and the fat on the altar. All the people saw it, were filled with joy, and fell on their faces.

The Deaths of Nadab and Abihu

Chapter 10

1 Aaron’s sons Nadab and Abihu each took his fire pan, put fire in it, and placed incense on it. They brought foreign fire before the Lord, which he had not commanded them. 2 Fire came out from before the Lord and consumed them, and they died before the Lord. 3 Moses told Aaron, “This is what the Lord spoke: Among those who draw near me I will show myself holy, and before all the people I will be glorified.” Aaron remained silent and accepted the judgment of justice. 4 Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, sons of Aaron’s uncle Uzziel, and told them, “Come near, take your relatives from before the sanctuary, and carry them outside the camp.” 5 They came near, placed them on their tunics, and carried them outside the camp, as Moses said. 6 Moses told Aaron and his sons Eleazar and Ithamar, “Do not cover your heads or tear your garments, so that you do not die and anger does not fall on all the people of the congregation. Your brothers, the whole house of Israel, may mourn all the burning the Lord has kindled. 7 Do not leave the entrance of the tent of meeting, so that you do not die, for the Lord’s anointing oil is on you.” They did as Moses said.

Instructions for the Priests

8 The Lord spoke with Aaron, saying: 9 “You and your sons with you must drink neither new nor old wine when you enter the tent of meeting, so that you do not die. This is a lasting statute throughout your generations, 10 to distinguish holy things from ordinary things, and the unclean from the clean, 11 and to teach all the sons of Israel all the statutes the Lord spoke with them through Moses.”

The Portions of the Offerings

12 Moses spoke with Aaron and his remaining sons Eleazar and Ithamar: “Take the grain offering remaining from the Lord’s offerings and eat it unleavened beside the altar, for it is most holy. 13 Eat it in a holy place, for it is your share and your sons’ share from the Lord’s offerings. This is what I was commanded. 14 You, your sons, and your daughters with you may eat the breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the contribution in a clean place. They have been given as your share and your sons’ share from the sacrifices of holy things of the sons of Israel. 15 They must bring the thigh of the contribution and the breast of the wave offering with the offerings of fat, to wave them as a wave offering before the Lord. They will belong to you and your sons with you as a lasting statute, as the Lord commanded.” 16 Moses carefully inquired about the goat of the sin offering and found that it had been burned. He became angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron’s remaining sons, saying: 17 “Why did you not eat the sin offering in a holy place? It is most holy, and he gave it to you to bear the guilt of the people of the congregation, making atonement for you before the Lord. 18 Its blood was not brought into the innermost sanctuary. You should certainly have eaten it in the sanctuary, as I commanded.” 19 Aaron spoke with Moses: “Today they brought their sin offering and their burnt offering before the Lord. You teach us that the sin offering is more serious than the second tithe, which we are not permitted to eat. This great misfortune overtook me today, when the two, Nadab and Abihu, died, and I mourn them. Should I eat the sin offering today? Would that be right before the Lord?” 20 Moses heard Aaron’s words, and they seemed right to Moses.

Clean and Unclean Animals

Chapter 11

1 The Lord spoke with Moses and Aaron, telling them: 2 “Speak with the sons of Israel and say: These are the living creatures you may eat from all the animals on the earth. 3 You may eat any animal that has a divided hoof split into two and brings up its cud. 4 But among those that bring up their cud or have a divided hoof, you must not eat these: the camel, which brings up its cud but has no divided hoof, is unclean for you; 5 the rabbit, which brings up its cud but has no divided hoof, is unclean for you; 6 the hare, which brings up its cud but has no divided hoof, is unclean for you; 7 and the pig, which has a divided hoof split into two but does not bring up its cud, is unclean for you. 8 You must not eat their flesh or touch their carcasses; they are unclean for you.

Creatures in the Water

9 From everything in the water, you may eat these: you may eat anything in the water, in seas or rivers, that has fins and scales. 10 Anything in seas or rivers that has no fins and scales, among all the creatures swarming in the water and all living creatures in the water, is detestable for you. 11 They must be detestable for you. You must not eat their flesh, and you must regard their carcasses as detestable. 12 Anything in the water without fins and scales is detestable for you.

Birds

13 You must regard these birds as detestable; they must not be eaten, for they are detestable: the eagle, the osprey, and the black eagle; 14 the kite and the vulture of every kind; 15 every sort of raven of every kind; 16 the ostrich, the falcon, the sea gull, and the hawk of every kind; 17 the owl, the cormorant, and the ibis; 18 the barn owl, the pelican, and the Egyptian vulture; 19 the stork, white and black, of every kind, the hoopoe, and the bat.

Winged Swarming Creatures

20 Every winged swarming creature that goes on four legs is detestable for you. 21 But among all winged swarming creatures that go on four legs, you may eat those with jointed legs above their feet for leaping on the ground. 22 Of these you may eat the locust of every kind, the rashona locust of every kind, the naala locust of every kind, and the karzeba locust of every kind. 23 Every other winged swarming creature with four legs is detestable for you.

Uncleanness from Animal Carcasses

24 These will make you unclean: whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean until evening. 25 Whoever carries any of their carcasses must wash his garments and will be unclean until evening. 26 Any animal that has a divided hoof without a complete split, and does not bring up its cud, is unclean for you. Whoever touches them becomes unclean. 27 Among all animals going on four legs, those that walk on their paws are unclean for you. Whoever touches their carcasses will be unclean until evening. 28 Whoever carries their carcasses must wash his garments and will be unclean until evening; they are unclean for you. 29 Among the creatures swarming on the ground, these are unclean for you: the weasel, the mouse, and the large Libyan lizard of every kind; 30 the hedgehog, the land crocodile, the spotted lizard, the sand lizard, and the mole. 31 These are unclean for you among all swarming creatures. Whoever touches them when they are dead will be unclean until evening. 32 Anything on which one of them falls when dead will be unclean, whether a wooden article, a garment, a skin, or a sack, any article used for work. It must be put in water and will be unclean until evening; then it will be clean. 33 If any of them falls inside a clay vessel, everything inside it becomes unclean, and you must break the vessel. 34 Any food that may be eaten becomes unclean if water comes on it, and any drink that may be drunk from any such vessel becomes unclean. 35 Anything on which any part of their carcasses falls becomes unclean. An oven or stove must be destroyed; they are unclean and will remain unclean for you. 36 Only a spring or a pit collecting water will be clean, but whoever touches their carcasses becomes unclean. 37 If any of their carcass falls on seed intended for sowing, the seed is clean. 38 But if water is put on any seed and any of their carcass falls on it, it is unclean for you. 39 If an animal you may eat dies, whoever touches its carcass becomes unclean until evening. 40 Whoever eats any of its carcass must wash his garments and will be unclean until evening.

Creatures That Swarm on the Ground

41 Every creature swarming on the ground is detestable; it must not be eaten. 42 You must not eat anything moving on its belly, anything going on four legs, and anything with many feet, among all creatures swarming on the ground, for they are detestable. 43 Do not make yourselves detestable through any creature swarming on the ground. Do not make yourselves unclean through them, becoming unclean like them. 44 For I am the Lord your God. Consecrate yourselves and be holy, for I am holy. Do not make yourselves unclean through any swarming creature that crawls on the ground. 45 For I am the Lord who redeemed you and brought you out of the land of Egypt to be your redeeming God. Be holy, for I am holy.” 46 This is the decree of the Law concerning animals, birds, every living creature moving in the water, and every creature swarming on the ground, 47 to distinguish the unclean from the clean, and the living creature that may be eaten from the one that may not be eaten.

Purification After Childbirth

Chapter 12

1 The Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 2 “Speak with the sons of Israel and say: When a woman conceives and gives birth to a son, she will be unclean for seven days, as she is unclean during the days of separation for her menstrual flow. 3 On the eighth day you must circumcise the flesh of his foreskin. 4 She must continue waiting thirty-three days over the blood of purification. She must not touch anything holy or enter the sanctuary until the days of her purification are complete. 5 If she gives birth to a daughter, she will be unclean for fourteen days, as during her menstrual separation. She must continue waiting sixty-six days over the blood of purification. 6 When the days of her purification for a son or daughter are complete, she must bring a year-old lamb as a burnt offering and a young pigeon or turtledove as a sin offering to the priest at the entrance of the tent of meeting. 7 He must bring it before the Lord and make atonement for her, and she will be clean from the source of her blood. This is the decree of the Law for a woman giving birth to a son or daughter. 8 If she cannot afford to bring a lamb, she must take two turtledoves or two young pigeons, one as a sin offering and one as a burnt offering. The priest must make atonement for her, and she will be clean.”

Examining Skin Diseases

Chapter 13

1 The Lord spoke with Moses and Aaron, saying: 2 “When a person has a mark, a scab, or a bright spot on the skin of his body, and it becomes an affliction of leprosy on his skin, he must come to Aaron the priest or one of his sons, the priests. 3 The priest must examine the affliction on his skin. If the hair in the affliction has turned white and the affliction looks lower than the surrounding skin, it is an affliction of leprosy. The priest must examine him and declare him unclean. 4 If the bright spot on his skin is white, but does not look lower than the surrounding skin, and the hair has not turned white, the priest must isolate the affected person for seven days. 5 The priest must examine him on the seventh day. If the affliction appears unchanged and has not spread in the skin, the priest must isolate him for another seven days. 6 The priest must examine him again on the seventh day. If the affliction has faded and has not spread in the skin, the priest must declare him clean. It is a scab; he must wash his garments and will be clean. 7 If the scab spreads in the skin after he has presented himself to the priest for his cleansing, he must appear before the priest again. 8 The priest must examine him. If the scab has spread in the skin, the priest must declare him unclean. ⟨It is leprosy.⟩ 9 When a person has an affliction of leprosy, he must come to the priest. 10 The priest must examine him. If there is a white mark on the skin, which has turned the hair white, and a trace of living flesh in the mark, 11 it is recurring ⟨leprosy⟩ on his skin. The priest must declare him unclean without isolating him, for he is unclean. 12 If the leprosy breaks out over his skin and covers all the affected person’s skin, from head to feet, everywhere the priest can see, 13 the priest must examine him. If the leprosy covers his whole body, he must declare the affected person clean. It has all turned white; he is clean. 14 But on the day living flesh appears on him, he becomes unclean. 15 The priest must examine the living flesh and declare him unclean. The living flesh is unclean; it is leprosy. 16 If the living flesh turns white, he must present himself to the priest. 17 The priest must examine him. If the affliction has turned white, the priest must declare the affected person clean; he is clean. 18 When a person has had an inflammation on his skin that healed, 19 and a white mark or a reddish-white bright spot appears in the place of the inflammation, it must be reported to the priest. 20 The priest must examine it. If it looks lower than the surrounding skin and its hair has turned white, ⟨the priest must declare him unclean.⟩ It is an affliction of leprosy that has broken out in the inflammation. 21 If the priest examines it and finds no white hair in it, and it is no lower than the surrounding skin and has faded, the priest must isolate him for seven days. 22 If it spreads in the skin, the priest must declare him unclean. It is an affliction. 23 But if the bright spot stays in its place without spreading, it is the mark of the inflammation, and the priest must declare him clean. 24 When a person has a burn on his skin, and the wound of the burn becomes a reddish-white or white bright spot, 25 the priest must examine it. If the hair in the bright spot has turned white and it looks lower than the surrounding skin, leprosy has broken out in the burn. The priest must declare him unclean; it is leprosy. 26 If the priest examines it and there is no white hair in the bright spot, and it is no deeper than the surrounding skin and has faded, the priest must isolate him for seven days. 27 The priest must examine him on the seventh day. If it spreads in the skin, the priest must declare him unclean; it is an affliction of leprosy. 28 If the bright spot stays in its place without spreading in the skin, and it has faded, it is the mark of the burn. The priest must declare him clean, for it is the mark of the burn. 29 When a man or woman has an affliction on the head or beard, 30 the priest must examine the affliction. If it looks lower than the surrounding skin and has thin yellow hair in it, the priest must declare the person unclean. It is a scaly affliction, leprosy of the head or beard. 31 If the priest examines the scaly affliction and it does not look lower than the surrounding skin and has no black hair in it, the priest must isolate the person with the scaly affliction for seven days. 32 The priest must examine the affliction on the seventh day. If the scaly affliction has not spread and has no yellow hair in it, and it does not look lower than the surrounding skin, 33 the person must shave around the scaly affliction without shaving the scaly affliction itself. The priest must isolate the person with the scaly affliction for another seven days. 34 The priest must examine the scaly affliction on the seventh day. If it has not spread in the skin and does not look lower than the surrounding skin, the priest must declare him clean. He must wash his garments and will be clean. 35 If the scaly affliction spreads in the skin after he has been declared clean, 36 the priest must examine him. If the scaly affliction has spread in the skin, the priest need not look for yellow hair; he is unclean. 37 But if the scaly affliction appears unchanged and black hair has grown in it, the scaly affliction has healed. He is clean, and the priest must declare him clean. 38 When a man or woman has bright spots on the skin of the body, white bright spots, 39 the priest must examine them. If the bright spots on their skin are dull white, it is a bright spot that has appeared on the skin; the person is clean. 40 If the hair falls from a man’s head, he is bald, but he is clean. 41 If the hair falls from the front of his head, he is bald at the forehead; he is clean. 42 If a reddish-white affliction appears on his bald head or bald forehead, leprosy is spreading on his bald head or bald forehead. 43 The priest must examine him. If the mark of the affliction on his bald head or bald forehead is reddish-white, like leprosy on the skin of the body, 44 he is a man with leprosy; he is unclean. The priest must certainly declare him unclean; the affliction is on his head. 45 The person with the affliction of leprosy must tear his garments as garments are torn in mourning, cover his head, and cover his upper lip. The person with leprosy must cry out, “Keep away from the unclean, so that you do not become unclean.” 46 He will be unclean as long as the affliction is on him; he is unclean. He must live alone; his dwelling must be outside the camp.

Contamination in Clothing

47 When an affliction of leprosy appears in a garment, whether wool or linen, 48 in the warp or weft of linen or wool, in a skin, or in any article made of skin, 49 and the affliction is greenish or reddish in the garment, skin, warp, weft, or any article made of skin, it is an affliction of leprosy. It must be shown to the priest. 50 The priest must examine the affliction and isolate the affected article for ⟨seven days.⟩ 51 ⟨He must examine the affliction⟩ on the seventh day. If it has spread in the garment, warp, weft, or skin, whatever the skin is used for, it is confirmed leprosy. It is unclean. 52 He must burn the garment, warp, or weft, whether wool or linen, or any article made of skin in which the affliction appears, for it is confirmed leprosy. It must be burned in fire. 53 If the priest examines it and the affliction has not spread in the garment, warp, weft, or any article made of skin, 54 the priest must command that the affected article be washed, and isolate it for another seven days. 55 The priest must examine the affliction after it is washed. If the affliction has not changed appearance, even though it has not spread, it is unclean. Burn it in fire; it is a cavity, whether on its inner or outer side. 56 If the priest examines it and the affliction has faded after washing, he must tear it out of the garment, skin, warp, or weft. 57 If it appears again in the garment, warp, weft, or any article made of skin, it is spreading. Burn the article containing the affliction in fire. 58 But a garment, warp, weft, or any article made of skin that you wash, and from which the affliction disappears, must be washed a second time and will be clean. 59 This is the decree of the Law for an affliction of leprosy in a wool or linen garment, warp, weft, or any article made of skin, to declare it clean or determine its uncleanness.”

The Cleansing of a Person with a Skin Disease

Chapter 14

1 The Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 2 “This is the decree of the Law for the person with leprosy on the day of his cleansing. He must come to the priest. 3 The priest must bring him outside the camp and examine him. If the affliction of leprosy has healed in the person with leprosy, 4 the priest must command that two living clean birds, cedarwood, fine crimson material, and hyssop be taken for the person being cleansed. 5 The priest must command that one bird be slaughtered inside a clay vessel over spring water. 6 He must take the living bird, the cedarwood, the fine crimson material, and the hyssop, and dip them with the living bird in the blood of the bird slaughtered over the spring water. 7 He must perform cleansing seven times on the person being cleansed from leprosy, declare him clean, and release the living bird into the open field. 8 The person being cleansed must wash his garments, shave off all his hair, bathe in water, and be clean. After that he may enter the camp, but must stay outside the camp for seven days. 9 On the seventh day he must shave off all his hair: his head, beard, and eyebrows, all his hair. He must wash his garments and bathe his body in water, and will be clean. 10 On the eighth day he must take two male lambs, whole and without a defect, one year-old female lamb, whole and without a defect, three tenths of fine flour mixed with oil as a grain offering, and one log of oil. 11 The priest performing the cleansing must place the man being cleansed and these things before the Lord at the entrance of the tent of meeting. 12 The priest must take one male lamb and bring it as a guilt offering with the log of oil, waving them as a wave offering before the Lord. 13 He must slaughter the lamb in the holy place where the sin offering and burnt offering are slaughtered. Like the sin offering, the guilt offering belongs to the priest; it is most holy. 14 The priest must take some of the guilt offering’s blood and put it on the tip of the right ear of the person being cleansed, his right thumb, and the big toe of his right foot. 15 The priest must take some of the log of oil and pour it into the palm of his own left hand. 16 The priest must dip his right finger in the oil in his left palm and sprinkle some of the oil with his finger seven times before the Lord. 17 The priest must put some of the remaining oil in his palm ⟨on the tip of⟩ the right ⟨ear⟩ of the person being cleansed, his right thumb, and the big toe of his right foot, over the blood of the guilt offering. 18 The priest must put what remains ⟨of the oil⟩ in his palm on the head of the person being cleansed, and make atonement for him before the Lord. 19 The priest must offer the sin offering and make atonement for the person being cleansed from his uncleanness. After that he must slaughter the burnt offering. 20 The priest must arrange the burnt offering and grain offering on the altar. The priest must make atonement for him, and he will be clean. 21 If he is poor and cannot afford so much, he must take one male lamb as a guilt offering, to wave as a wave offering and make atonement for him, one tenth of a measure of fine flour mixed with oil as a grain offering, and a log of oil, 22 and two turtledoves or two young pigeons, whichever he can afford. One must be a sin offering and one a burnt offering. 23 On the eighth day he must bring them for his cleansing to the priest at the entrance of the tent of meeting, before the Lord. 24 The priest must take the lamb of the guilt offering and the log of oil, and wave them as a wave offering before the Lord. 25 He must slaughter the lamb of the guilt offering. ⟨The priest must take some of the guilt offering’s blood⟩ and put it on the tip of the right ear of the person being cleansed, his right thumb, and the big toe of his right foot. 26 The priest must pour some of the oil into the palm of his own left hand. 27 The priest must sprinkle some of the oil in his own left palm with his right finger seven times before the Lord. 28 The priest must put some of the oil in his palm on the tip of the right ear of the person being cleansed, his right thumb, and the big toe of his right foot, where the blood of the guilt offering was put. 29 The priest must put what remains of the oil on his hands on the head of the person being cleansed, to make atonement for him before the Lord. 30 He must offer one of the turtledoves or young pigeons, whichever he can afford, 31 whichever he can afford, one as a sin offering and one as a burnt offering, beside the grain offering. The priest must make atonement before the Lord for the person being cleansed. 32 This is the decree of the Law for someone with an affliction of leprosy who cannot afford to bring an offering on the day of his cleansing.”

Contamination in Houses

33 The Lord spoke with Moses ⟨and Aaron,⟩ saying: 34 “When you enter the land of Canaan, which I give you as an inheritance, and I put an affliction of leprosy in a house in the land of your inheritance, 35 the owner of the house must come and tell the priest, ‘Something like an affliction has appeared to me in the house.’ 36 The priest must command that the house be emptied before he enters to examine the affliction, so that everything in the house does not become unclean. After that the priest must enter to examine the house. 37 He must examine the affliction. If the affliction in the house’s walls consists of greenish or reddish hollows that look lower than the wall, 38 the priest must leave the house through its entrance and close up the house for seven days. 39 The priest must return on the seventh day and examine it. If the affliction has spread in the house’s walls, 40 the priest must command that the stones containing the affliction be removed and thrown into an unclean place outside the city. 41 He must have the inside of the house scraped all around. The plaster they scrape off must be poured into an unclean place outside the city. 42 They must take other stones and put them in place of those stones. He must take other plaster and plaster the house. 43 If the affliction returns and spreads in the house after the stones have been removed and the house scraped and plastered, 44 the priest must come and enter and examine it. If the affliction has spread in the house, it is confirmed leprosy in the house; it is unclean. 45 The priest must demolish the house, its stones, timber, and all its plaster, and carry them to an unclean place outside the city. 46 Whoever enters the house during the days it is closed up will be unclean until evening. 47 Whoever sleeps in the house must wash his garments, and whoever eats in the house must wash his garments. 48 If the priest enters and examines it and the affliction has not spread in the house after it was plastered, the priest must declare the house clean, for the affliction has healed. 49 To cleanse the house, he must take two birds, cedarwood, fine crimson material, and hyssop. 50 He must slaughter one bird inside a clay vessel over spring water. 51 He must take the cedarwood, hyssop, crimson material, and living bird, and dip them in the blood of the bird slaughtered in the spring water, and sprinkle the house seven times. 52 He must cleanse the house with the bird’s blood, the spring water, the living bird, the cedarwood, the hyssop, and the fine crimson material. 53 He must release the living bird outside the city into the open field, making atonement for the house, and it will be clean. 54 This is the Law for every affliction of leprosy and scaly affliction, 55 for leprosy of a garment or house, 56 for a mark, a scab, or a bright spot, 57 to teach the distinction between unclean and clean. This is the decree of the Law for leprosy.”

Bodily Discharges and Uncleanness

Chapter 15

1 The Lord spoke with Moses and Aaron, saying: 2 “Speak with the sons of Israel and tell them: When any man has a discharge from his body, his discharge is unclean. 3 This is his uncleanness from his discharge: whether his body runs with the discharge or is blocked by the discharge, it is his uncleanness. 4 Every bed on which the man with the discharge lies becomes unclean, and every article on which he sits becomes unclean. 5 Whoever touches his bed must wash his garments and bathe in water, and will be unclean until evening. 6 Whoever sits on an article on which the man with the discharge sat must wash his garments and bathe in water, and will be unclean until evening. 7 Whoever touches the body of the man with the discharge must wash his garments and bathe in water, and will be unclean until evening. 8 If the man with the discharge spits on a clean person, that person must wash his garments and bathe in water, and will be unclean until evening. 9 Any saddle on which the man with the discharge rides becomes unclean. 10 Whoever touches anything that was under him will be unclean until evening. Whoever carries these things must wash his garments and bathe in water, and will be unclean until evening. 11 Anyone the man with the discharge touches without rinsing his hands in water must wash his garments and bathe in water, and will be unclean until evening. 12 A clay vessel the man with the discharge touches must be broken, and every wooden vessel must be scrubbed and rinsed in water. 13 When the man with the discharge becomes clean from his discharge, he must count seven days for his cleansing, wash his garments, and bathe his body in spring water, and will be clean. 14 On the eighth day he must take two turtledoves or two young pigeons and come before the Lord to the entrance of the tent of meeting, giving them to the priest. 15 The priest must offer them, one as a sin offering and one as a burnt offering, and make atonement for his discharge. 16 When a man has an emission of semen, he must bathe his whole body in water and will be unclean until evening. 17 Any garment or article made of skin on which an emission of semen comes must be washed in water and will be unclean until evening. 18 When a man has intercourse with a woman and has an emission of semen, they must bathe in water and will be unclean until evening.

Menstrual Bleeding

19 When a woman has a discharge of blood in her body, she must remain in her menstrual separation for seven days. Whoever touches her will be unclean until evening. 20 Anything on which she lies during her menstrual separation becomes unclean, and anything on which she sits becomes unclean. 21 Whoever touches her bed must wash his garments and bathe in water, and will be unclean until evening. 22 Whoever touches anything on which she sits must wash his garments and bathe in water, and will be unclean until evening. 23 Whether it is a bed or an article on which she sits, whoever touches it will be unclean until evening. 24 If a man has intercourse with her while she has her menstrual flow, he will be unclean for seven days, and every bed on which he lies becomes unclean. 25 When a woman has a discharge for many days outside the time of her menstruation, or has a discharge beyond her menstruation, she will be unclean throughout the days of her discharge, as during the days of her menstrual separation. 26 Every bed on which she lies throughout the days of her discharge is like her menstrual bed, and every article on which she sits becomes unclean, as with the uncleanness of her menstrual separation. 27 Whoever touches them becomes unclean and must wash his garments and bathe in water, and will be unclean until evening. 28 When she becomes clean from her discharge, she must count seven days; after that she will be clean. 29 On the eighth day she must take two turtledoves or two young pigeons and bring them to the priest at the entrance of the tent of meeting. 30 The priest must offer one as a sin offering and one as a burnt offering, and make atonement for her before the Lord for her unclean discharge. 31 Guard the sons of Israel from their uncleanness, so that they do not die in their uncleanness and do not defile my sanctuary, for the Glory of his Shekinah dwells among them. 32 This is the decree of the Law for a person with a discharge and a person who has an emission of semen, becoming unclean through it, 33 for a woman with a discharge and a man with a discharge, whether male or female, and for a man who lies with an unclean woman.”

The Day of Atonement

Chapter 16

1 The Lord spoke with Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron the high priest, when they brought an additional sacrifice before the Lord at the wrong time, which they had not been commanded to bring, and died. 2 The Lord told Moses, “Tell your brother Aaron not to ⟨enter⟩ the sanctuary at any time, inside the curtain, before the atonement cover on the ark of the testimony, so that he does not die. For in my cloud, the Glory of my Shekinah, my Memra is revealed over the atonement cover. 3 Aaron must enter to serve in the house of my dwelling in this order: with a young bull as a sin offering and a ram as a burnt offering. 4 He must wear holy linen tunics, with linen trousers on his body, fasten linen sashes around himself, and bind his head with linen turbans. These are holy garments. He must bathe his body in water and put them on. 5 From the people of the congregation of the sons of Israel he must take two young male goats as a sin offering and one ram as a burnt offering. 6 Aaron must bring the bull of the sin offering from his own property, making atonement for himself and the men of his household. 7 He must take the two young male goats and place them before the Lord at the entrance of the tent of meeting. 8 Aaron must cast lots over the two young male goats, one lot for the name of the Memra of the Lord and one lot for Azazel. 9 Aaron must bring the young goat on which the lot for the name of the Memra of the Lord falls and offer it as a sin offering. 10 He must place the living goat on which the lot for Azazel falls before the Lord to make atonement over it, sending it to Azazel in the wilderness. 11 Aaron must bring the bull of the sin offering from his own property and make atonement for himself and the men of his household. He must slaughter the bull of the sin offering from his own property. 12 He must take a fire pan full of burning coals from the altar before the Lord and two handfuls of finely crushed fragrant incense, and bring them inside the curtain. 13 He must put the incense on the fire before the Lord, so that the incense smoke covers the atonement cover over the testimony, so that he does not die. 14 He must take some of the blood ⟨of the bull⟩ and sprinkle it with his finger on the east side of the atonement cover. He must sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times before the atonement cover. 15 He must slaughter the young goat of the sin offering from the people, bring its blood inside the curtain, and treat its blood as he treated the bull’s blood, sprinkling it on and before the atonement cover. 16 He must make atonement for the holy things because of the uncleanness of the sons of Israel and their transgressions, all their sins. He must do the same for the tent of meeting, where the Glory of his Shekinah dwells among their uncleanness. 17 No person may be in the tent of meeting when he enters the holy place to make atonement until he comes out, having made atonement for himself, the men of his household, and the whole assembly of the congregation of the sons of Israel. 18 He must go out to the altar before the Lord and make atonement for it. He must take some of the bull’s blood and the goat’s blood and put it on the horns all around the altar. 19 He must sprinkle some of the blood on it with his finger seven times, cleansing and consecrating it from the uncleanness of the sons of Israel.

The Goat Sent into the Wilderness

20 When he has finished making atonement for the holy place, the tent of meeting, and the altar, he must bring the living goat. 21 Aaron must rest his hands on the living goat’s head and confess over it all the sins of the sons of Israel, all their transgressions, all their sins. He must put them on the goat’s head and send it into the wilderness through a man who is ready. 22 The goat will carry all their guilt on itself to a separate land. When he has sent the goat into the wilderness, 23 Aaron must enter the tent of meeting and take off the linen garments he wore when entering the sanctuary, leaving them there. 24 He must bathe his body in water in a holy place and put on his garments. He must go out and bring his burnt offering and the people’s burnt offering, making atonement for himself and the men of the people. 25 He must arrange the sin offering’s fat on the altar. 26 The person who sends the goat to Azazel must wash his garments and bathe his body in water; after that he may enter the camp. 27 The bull of the sin offering and the goat of the sin offering, whose blood was brought into the sanctuary to make atonement, must be carried outside the camp. Their skins, flesh, and dung must be burned in fire. 28 The person who burns them must wash his garments and bathe his body in water; after that he may enter the camp.

The Annual Day of Rest and Atonement

29 This will be a lasting statute for you: on the tenth day of the seventh month you must humble yourselves and do no work, neither the native nor the foreigner living among you. 30 On this day he will make atonement for you to cleanse you; you will be clean before the Lord from all your sins. 31 It is a Sabbath of complete rest for you, and you must fast on it. It is a lasting statute. 32 The priest anointed and ordained to serve in the high priesthood after his father must make atonement. He must put on the linen garments, the sanctuary’s garments. 33 He must make atonement for the Holy of Holies and the tent of meeting, make atonement for the altar, and make atonement for the priests and all the people of the assembly. 34 This will be a lasting statute for you, to make atonement for all the sins of the sons of Israel once a year.” He did as the Lord commanded Moses.

Slaughtering Animals and Bringing Sacrifices

Chapter 17

1 The Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 2 “Speak with Aaron, his sons, and all the sons of Israel and tell them: This is what the Lord commanded: 3 Any man of the house of Israel who slaughters a bull, a lamb, or a young goat inside or outside the camp, 4 without bringing it to the entrance of the tent of meeting to bring it as a gift before the Lord, before the Lord’s tent, will have blood charged against him, as though he had shed innocent blood. That man must be wiped out from among his people. 5 The sons of Israel must bring the sacrifices they slaughter in the open field before the Lord, to the priest at the entrance of the tent of meeting, before the Lord, and slaughter them as sacrifices of holy things before the Lord. 6 The priest must sprinkle the blood on the Lord’s altar at the entrance of the tent of meeting and arrange the fat as a pleasing aroma to the name of the Lord. 7 They must no longer slaughter their sacrifices to the demons they prostitute themselves by pursuing. This will be a lasting statute for them throughout their generations. 8 Tell them: Any man of the house of Israel, or any foreigner living among you, who brings a burnt offering or sacrifices, 9 without bringing it to the entrance of the tent of meeting to offer it before the Lord, must be wiped out from among his people.

Blood Must Not Be Eaten

10 Any man of the house of Israel, or any foreigner living among them, who eats ⟨any blood, I will turn my angry face against the person who eats⟩ the blood, and wipe him out from among his people. 11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I gave it to you on the altar to make atonement for your lives, for blood makes atonement for the sins of a life. 12 For this reason I told the sons of Israel: None of you may eat blood, and the foreigner living among you must not eat blood. 13 Any man of the sons of Israel, or any foreigner living among them, who hunts an animal or bird that may be eaten must pour out its blood and cover it with dust. 14 For the life of all flesh is its blood; it is its life. I told the sons of Israel: Do not eat ⟨the blood⟩ of any flesh, for the life of all ⟨flesh⟩ is its blood. Whoever eats it must be wiped out. 15 Any person, native or foreigner, who eats an animal that died or was killed by beasts must wash his garments and bathe in water, and will be unclean until evening. Then he will be clean. 16 If he does not wash his garments or bathe his body in water, he will bear his guilt.”

Forbidden Sexual Relationships

Chapter 18

1 The Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 2 “Speak with the sons of Israel and tell them: I am the Lord your God. 3 Do not act like the inhabitants of the land of Egypt, where you lived, or like the inhabitants of the land of Canaan, where I am bringing you. Do not follow their laws. 4 Carry out my judgments and observe the statutes of my Law, following them. I am the Lord your God. 5 Observe my statutes and judgments; the person who carries them out will live by them. This is what the Lord says. 6 None of you may approach a close relative to uncover that relative’s nakedness. This is what the Lord says. 7 Do not dishonor your father’s nakedness or your mother’s nakedness. She is your mother; do not uncover her nakedness. It is your father’s. 8 Do not dishonor the nakedness of your father’s wife; it is your father’s nakedness. 9 Do not dishonor the nakedness of your sister, your father’s daughter or your mother’s daughter, whom your father fathered with another woman or your mother bore to another man. 10 Do not dishonor the nakedness of your son’s daughter or your daughter’s daughter, for it is your own nakedness. 11 Do not dishonor the nakedness of the daughter of your father’s wife, whom your father fathered; she is your sister. 12 Do not dishonor the nakedness of your father’s sister; she is your father’s close relative. 13 Do not dishonor the nakedness of your mother’s sister; she is your mother’s close relative. 14 Do not dishonor the nakedness of your father’s brother or approach his wife; she is your aunt. 15 Do not dishonor the nakedness of your daughter-in-law. She is your son’s wife; do not dishonor her nakedness. 16 Do not dishonor the nakedness of your brother’s wife; it is your brother’s nakedness. 17 Do not dishonor the nakedness of a woman and her daughter. Do not marry her son’s daughter or her daughter’s daughter to uncover their nakedness; they are close relatives. It is prostitution. 18 Do not marry a woman along with her sister, causing her distress by uncovering her sister’s nakedness while she is alive. 19 Do not marry a woman to uncover her nakedness during the uncleanness of her menstruation. 20 Do not have sexual relations with your neighbor’s wife, making yourself unclean with her. 21 Do not give any of your sons to be passed through fire before an idol, and do not profane your God’s name. This is what the Lord says. 22 Do not lie with a male as with a woman; it is detestable. 23 Do not lie with any animal, making yourself unclean with it. A woman must not present herself to an animal to lie with it; it is detestable. 24 Do not make yourselves unclean through any of these things, for the nations I am banishing before you made themselves unclean through all of them. 25 The land became unclean, and I remembered its sin against it; the land banished its inhabitants. 26 Observe my statutes and judgments. None of you, neither native nor foreigner living among you, may practice any of these detestable things. 27 The people of the land who came before you practiced all these detestable things, and the land became unclean. 28 Will the land not vomit you out if you make it unclean, as it vomited out the nations before you? 29 Whoever practices any of these detestable things, the persons doing them must be wiped out from among their people. 30 Carry out my instructions; do not practice the detestable customs practiced before you, and do not make yourselves unclean through them. This is what the Lord your God says.”

Holiness and Conduct Toward Others

Chapter 19

1 The Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 2 “Speak with the whole congregation of the sons of Israel and tell them: Be holy, for I am holy in my Memra. This is what the Lord your God says. 3 Each of you must take care to honor his father and mother, and ⟨keep⟩ my Sabbaths holy. This is what the Lord your God says. 4 Do not stray after ⟨foreign worship⟩ or make cast-metal idols for yourselves. This is what the Lord your God says. 5 When you bring a sacrifice of holy things to the name of the Lord, bring it so that you may find favor. 6 Eat it on the day you bring it or the following day. Whatever remains until the third day must be burned in fire. 7 If it is eaten on the third day, it is rejected; it will not be accepted with favor. 8 Whoever eats it will bear his guilt, for he has profaned the Lord’s offerings. That person must be wiped out from among his people. 9 When you reap the harvest of your land, do not finish reaping the last strip of your field or gather the gleanings of your harvest. 10 Do not glean your vineyards or gather your vineyard’s fallen grapes. Leave them for the poor and the foreigners. This is what the Lord your God says. 11 My people, sons of Israel, do not steal, deny what you know, or deceive one another. 12 Do not swear falsely by my name or profane your God’s name. This is what the Lord says. 13 Do not oppress your neighbor or rob him. A hired worker’s wages must not stay with you overnight until morning. 14 Do not curse a person who cannot hear or put an obstacle before a person who cannot see. Fear your God. This is what the Lord says. 15 Do not act falsely in judgment. Do not favor the poor or honor the powerful; judge your neighbors truthfully. 16 Do not follow the threefold tongue to do harm or silence the parties to a lawsuit. Do not stand against the blood of your neighbor’s killers when you know that he is innocent at trial. This is what the Lord says. 17 Do not hate your brother in your heart. Correct your neighbor, so that you do not incur guilt on his account. 18 Do not follow the threefold tongue, cruel as a sword wounding on both sides, with both edges, to distress your neighbor with it. Do not prevent your neighbor’s acquittal when you know he is innocent at trial, or bring suspicion of guilt for your neighbor’s blood on yourself. Do not take revenge or bear a grudge against your neighbor; love your neighbor as yourselves. This is what the Lord says. 19 Observe the statute of my Law. Do not mate your livestock with another kind, sow your field with two kinds of seed, or wear a garment of mixed wool and linen, a mixed weave. 20 If a man has intercourse with a woman who is a slave bound to another man’s service, who has not been redeemed or given a written release, they have rebelled and are guilty of punishment. They must not die, for she has not gained her freedom. 21 He must bring his guilt offering to the name of the Lord at the entrance of the tent of meeting, a ram as a guilt offering. 22 ⟨The priest⟩ must make atonement for him before the Lord with the ram of the guilt offering for the sin he committed. He will be forgiven and released from the sin he committed. 23 When you enter the land and plant any fruit tree, remove its foreskin, its fruit. For three years it must be detestable to you; it must not be eaten. 24 In the fourth year all its fruit will be for the name of the Lord, a holy thing that may be redeemed. 25 In the fifth year you may eat its fruit, so that the fruit of the harvest may increase for you. This is what the Lord your God says. 26 My people, sons of Israel, do not eat over the blood of those executed by the Sanhedrin. Do not practice divination or deceive people’s eyes. 27 Do not round off the edges of your heads or damage the edges of your beards. 28 Do not cut your body for the soul of a dead person or tattoo yourselves. This is what the Lord says. 29 Do not delay in giving your daughter in marriage, so that the land does not fall into prostitution and become filled with sons of prostitution. 30 Keep my Sabbath holy and pray with reverence in my sanctuary. This is what the Lord says. 31 Do not turn toward those who consult the dead or take pleasure in those who summon spirits of the dead, making yourselves unclean with them. This is what the Lord your God says. 32 Rise before wise men greater than you in the Law, honor the elder, and fear before your God. This is what the Lord says. 33 If a foreigner settles with you in your land, do not mistreat him. 34 The foreigner living among you must be like a native among you. Love him as yourselves, for you were foreigners in the land of Egypt. This is what the Lord your God says. 35 Do not act falsely in judgment, weight, measures of capacity, or scales. 36 Have honest scales, honest measures, honest hins, and honest weights. This is what the Lord your God, who redeemed you and brought you out of the land of Egypt, says. 37 Keep all my statutes and judgments, and carry them out. This is what the Lord says.”

Punishments for Forbidden Worship and Sexual Acts

Chapter 20

1 The Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 2 “Tell the sons of Israel: Any man of the sons of Israel, or any foreigner living in Israel, who gives one of his sons to be passed before an idol must be put to death. The people of the land must stone him with stones. 3 I will set my fierce anger against that man and wipe him out from among his people, for he gave one of his sons to be passed through fire before an idol, making my sanctuary unclean and profaning my holy name. 4 If the people of the land close their eyes to that man when he gives one of his sons to be passed through fire before an idol, and do not put him to death, 5 I will set my fierce anger against that man and his offspring and ⟨wipe out⟩ him and all who ⟨stray⟩ after him, ⟨straying⟩ after an idol, from among his people. 6 I will set my fierce anger against the person who strays after those who consult the dead and those who summon spirits of the dead, straying after them, and wipe him out from among his people. 7 Consecrate yourselves and be holy, for I am the Lord your God. 8 Keep my statutes and carry them out. I am the Lord who consecrated you. 9 Any man who dishonors his father or mother must die. He has dishonored his father and mother; he must die. His blood is on him. 10 Any man who lies with another man’s wife, any man who commits adultery with his neighbor’s wife, must be put to death, both the adulterer and the adulteress. 11 Any man who lies with his father’s wife ⟨has dishonored his father’s nakedness.⟩ Both must be put to death; the guilt of their blood is on them. 12 Any man who lies with his son’s wife, they must be put to death. They have done something detestable; the guilt of their blood is on them. 13 Any man who lies with a male as with a woman, they have done something detestable. Both must be put to death; the guilt of their blood is on them. 14 Any man who marries a woman and her mother, it is detestable. Burn him and both women in fire, so that there is no prostitution among you. 15 Any man who lies with an animal must be put to death, and you must kill the animal. 16 Any woman who approaches an animal to lie with it, you must kill the woman and the animal. They must be put to death; the guilt of their blood is on them. 17 Any man who marries his sister, his father’s daughter or his mother’s daughter, and sees her nakedness, and she sees his nakedness: this was a kindness I did for the first people to build up the world. But from then on, all who do this must be wiped out before the eyes of the sons of their people. He has dishonored his sister’s nakedness; he will receive punishment for his sin. 18 Any man who lies with a menstruating woman and dishonors her nakedness has profaned the source of her blood, and she has dishonored the source of her blood. Both must be wiped out from among their people. 19 Do not dishonor the nakedness of your mother’s sister or your father’s sister, for that dishonors a blood relative. They will receive punishment for their sins. 20 Any man who lies with his father’s brother’s wife has dishonored his aunt’s nakedness. They will receive punishment for their sin; they will die without sons. 21 ⟨Any man⟩ who marries his brother’s wife, it is detestable. He has dishonored his brother’s nakedness; they will be without sons.

A People Set Apart

22 Keep all my statutes and judgments and carry them out, so that the land where I am bringing you to live does not vomit you out. 23 Do not follow the laws of the nations I am driving out before you, for they practiced all these detestable things, and his Memra was distressed by them. 24 I told you: You will inherit their land, and I will give it to you to possess, a land producing good fruit, pure as milk, sweet and delicious as honey. I am the Lord your God, who separated you from the nations. 25 Distinguish the clean animal from the unclean and the unclean bird from the clean. Do not make yourselves detestable through an animal, a bird, or anything crawling on the ground that I have set apart from you as unclean. 26 Be holy for my name, for I, the Lord, am holy. I separated you from the nations to belong to my name. 27 A man or woman among whom are those who consult the dead or summon spirits of the dead must be put to death. They must stone them with stones; the guilt of their blood is on them.”

Holiness and Restrictions for Priests

Chapter 21

1 The Lord told Moses, “Speak with the priests, Aaron’s sons, and tell them: The high priest must not make himself unclean through a dead person among his people, 2 except for a close blood relative: his mother, father, son, daughter, or brother, 3 or his virgin sister who is close to him and has not yet been married to a man. He may make himself unclean for her. 4 The leader among his people must not make himself unclean, profaning the priesthood. 5 They must not make marks on their heads, shave the edges of their beards, or make cuts in their bodies. 6 They must be holy before their God and must not profane their God’s name, for they bring the Lord’s offerings, their God’s bread; they must be holy. 7 They must not marry a woman who has strayed or been profaned, or a woman divorced by her husband, for they must be holy before their God. 8 Treat him as holy, for they bring your God’s bread. They must be holy to you, for I, the Lord who consecrated you, am holy. 9 If the daughter of a priest strays or is profaned, she prostitutes her father. She must be burned in fire.

The High Priest

10 The priest raised above his brothers, whose head has been anointed with oil and who has been ordained to wear the garments, must not cover his head or tear his garments. 11 He must not approach any dead person or make himself unclean even for his father or mother. 12 He must not leave the sanctuary or profane his God’s sanctuary, for the crown of his God’s anointing oil is on him. This is what the Lord says. 13 He must marry a woman with evidence of her virginity. 14 He must not marry a widow, a divorced woman, or one who has strayed or been profaned. He must marry only a woman from his own people. 15 He must not profane his sons among his people, for I am the Lord who consecrated them.”

Physical Defects and Priestly Service

16 The Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 17 “Speak with Aaron and say: No man among your sons throughout their generations with a physical defect may approach to bring his God’s bread. 18 No man with a defect may approach to offer: a blind or lame man, a man with a flattened nose or an overlong limb, 19 ⟨or a man with an injured foot or injured hand,⟩ 20 or one whose eyebrows cover his eyes, one with no hair on his eyebrows, a hunchback, a dwarf, one with a defect in his eyes, one covered in scabs, one with a dark complexion, or one without testicles. 21 No man among the sons of Aaron the priest with a defect may approach to bring his God’s bread. If he has a defect, he must not approach to bring his God’s bread. 22 He may eat his God’s bread, from the most holy things and the holy things. 23 But he must not enter inside the curtain or approach the altar, for he has a defect. He must not profane my sanctuary, for I am the Lord who consecrated them.” 24 Moses spoke with Aaron, his sons, and all the sons of Israel.

Eating the Holy Offerings

Chapter 22

1 The Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 2 “Tell Aaron and his sons to be careful with the holy things of the sons of Israel that they consecrate to my name, so that they do not profane my holy name. I am the Lord. 3 Tell them: Throughout your generations, any man among all your sons who approaches the holy things the sons of Israel consecrate to the name of the Lord while he is unclean must be wiped out from before him. This is what the Lord says. 4 No man of Aaron’s sons with leprosy or a discharge may eat the holy things until he is clean. Anyone who touches something made unclean by a human corpse, or a man who has had an emission of semen, 5 or any man who touches a swarming creature that makes him unclean, or a person who makes him unclean through any of his uncleanness, 6 the person touching it will be unclean until evening. He must not eat the holy things unless he has bathed his body in water. 7 When the sun sets he will be clean; after that he may eat the holy things, for they are his bread. 8 He must not eat an animal that died or was killed by beasts, making himself unclean with it. This is what the Lord says. 9 They must carry out my instructions, so that they do not receive punishment for sin and die for profaning it. I am the Lord who consecrated you. 10 No person outside the priesthood may eat a holy thing. A foreign resident or hired worker must not eat a holy thing. 11 But when a priest acquires a person as his property with his own money, that person may eat it. Those brought up in his household may eat his bread. 12 If a priest’s daughter marries a man outside the priesthood, she must not eat the contributions of the holy things. 13 If a priest’s daughter is widowed or abandoned and has no sons, and returns to her father’s house as in her youth, she may eat her father’s bread. No person outside the priesthood may eat it. 14 If a man eats a holy thing unintentionally, he must add a fifth to it and give the holy things to the priest. 15 They must not profane the holy things the sons of Israel set apart to the name of the Lord, 16 or bring guilt requiring a guilt offering on them when they eat their holy things, for I am the Lord who consecrated them.”

Animals Accepted for Sacrifice

17 The Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 18 “Speak with Aaron, his sons, and all the sons of Israel and tell them: Any man of the house of Israel, or any foreigner in Israel, who brings an offering for any of their vows or any voluntary offering they bring as a burnt offering to the name of the Lord, 19 to find favor for you, must bring a male, whole and without a defect, from cattle, lambs, or goats. 20 Anything with a defect will not be accepted with favor for you. 21 When a man brings a sacrifice of holy things to the name of the Lord, fulfilling a stated vow or as a voluntary offering from cattle or sheep, it must be whole to find favor. It must have no defect. 22 Do not bring anything blind, broken, too tall, too weak, or covered in scabs before the Lord or put any of them on the altar as an offering to the name of the Lord. 23 You may dedicate a bull or lamb with a missing or extra limb as a voluntary offering, but it will not be accepted with favor for a vow. 24 Do not bring an animal with crushed, bruised, torn, or pressed testicles to the name of the Lord. Do not do this in your land. 25 Do not bring any of these as your God’s bread from ⟨a foreigner’s hand,⟩ for they are damaged and ⟨defective.⟩ They will not be accepted with favor for you.” 26 The Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 27 “A time to remember our offerings for us, which we used to bring, making atonement for our sins. Now, although we have no sheep from our flocks to bring, atonement may be made for our sins. The bull was chosen first to recall before me the merit of the man of the East, who was blessed with everything in his old age. He ran to the cattle yard and brought a fat, good calf, giving it to the servant boy, who hurried to prepare it. He baked unleavened bread and fed the angels, and immediately Sarah was told that she would give birth to Isaac. After that the lamb was chosen to recall the merit of the unique man who was bound on one of the mountains like a lamb as a burnt offering on the altar. In his good mercy he rescued him. When his sons pray in their times of distress, they will say, ‘Answer us at this time, hear the voice of our prayer, and remember for us the binding of our father Isaac.’ After that the young goat was chosen to recall the merit of the blameless man who covered his hands with goatskins, prepared dishes, and fed his righteous father to receive the order of blessings. These are the three sacrifices, the sacrifices of the world’s three fathers, Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob. For this reason it is written and explained in the book of the Lord’s Law: When a bull, lamb, or young goat is born, it must be raised behind its mother for seven days. From the eighth day onward it is permitted to bring it before the Lord. 28 My people, sons of Israel, do not slaughter a cow or ewe with its young ⟨on the same day.⟩ 29 ⟨When you slaughter⟩ a thanksgiving sacrifice to the name of the Lord, slaughter it to find favor for yourselves. 30 It must be eaten that day; leave none of it until morning. This is what the Lord says. 31 Keep the commands of my Law and carry them out. I am the Lord who gives a good reward to those who keep the commands of my Law. 32 Do not profane my holy name, so that my honored name may be sanctified among my people Israel. I am the Lord who consecrated you, 33 who redeemed you and brought you as redeemed people out of the land of Egypt to be your redeeming God in my Memra. I am the Lord who redeemed your fathers, and I will redeem you.”

The Appointed Festivals

Chapter 23

1 The Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 2 “Speak with the sons of Israel and tell them: The Lord’s appointed festivals that you must proclaim as festival days and holy gatherings, these are the times arranged for his appointed festivals.

The Sabbath

3 Work may be done for six days, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of complete rest, a ⟨festival⟩ day and holy gathering. Do no work; it is rest and relief before the Lord wherever you live.

Passover and Unleavened Bread

4 These are the Lord’s appointed festivals, festival days and holy gatherings that you must proclaim at their appointed times. 5 In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at twilight, is the Passover sacrifice before the Lord. 6 On the fifteenth day of that month is the Festival of Unleavened Bread before the Lord. Eat unleavened bread for seven days. 7 On the first day you must have a festival day and holy gathering. Do no laborious work. 8 Bring an offering to the name of the Lord for seven days. On the ⟨seventh⟩ day there must be a holy gathering; do no laborious work.”

The First Sheaf of the Harvest

9 The Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 10 “Speak with the sons of Israel and tell them: When you enter the land I give you and reap its harvest, bring the first sheaf of your harvest to the priest. 11 He must wave the sheaf before the Lord to find favor for you. The priest must wave it on the day after the first festival day of Passover. 12 On the day you wave the sheaf, make an offering and bring a year-old lamb, whole and without a defect, as a burnt offering to the name of the Lord. 13 Its grain offering must be two tenths of fine flour mixed with oil, an offering accepted as a pleasing aroma to the name of the Lord. Its wine offering must be a quarter of a hin of wine. 14 Do not eat new bread, roasted grain, or dried ears until you bring your God’s offering. This is a lasting statute throughout your generations wherever you live.

The Festival of Weeks

15 From the day after the first festival day of Passover, the day you bring the sheaf of the wave offering, count seven complete weeks. 16 Until the day after the seventh Sabbath, counting only from the day after the first festival day of Passover, count fifty days; then bring a grain offering from the new grain before the Lord. 17 From your dwelling places bring two cakes as bread for a wave offering, of two tenths of fine flour. They must be baked with leaven as firstfruits to the name of the Lord. 18 With the bread bring seven year-old lambs, whole and without a defect, one young bull, and two rams. They must be a burnt offering to the name of the Lord, with their grain offering and wine offering, an offering accepted as a pleasing aroma before the Lord. 19 Bring one young male goat as a sin offering and two year-old lambs as a sacrifice of holy things. 20 The priest must wave them with the firstfruits bread as a wave offering before the Lord, with the two lambs. They will be holy to the name of the Lord, given as a gift to the priest. 21 As long as you live and endure, proclaim this day a festival day and have a holy gathering. Do no laborious work. This is a lasting statute throughout your generations wherever you live. 22 When you reap your land’s harvest, do not finish reaping the last strip in your fields or gather the gleanings of your harvest. Leave them for the poor and the foreigners. This is what the Lord your God says.”

The Day of Trumpet Blasts

23 The Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 24 “⟨Speak with the sons of Israel and say:⟩ In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you must have a Sabbath of complete rest, a good remembrance with the sounding of the ram’s horn and an alarm, a festival day and holy gathering. 25 Do no laborious work; bring offerings before the Lord.”

The Day of Atonement

26 The Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 27 “But on the tenth day of this seventh month is the fast of atonement. It must be a festival day and holy gathering for you. Fast on it and bring offerings before the Lord. 28 Do no work on that day, for it is the fast day of atonement, to make atonement for you before the Lord your God. 29 Any person able to fast who does not fast on that very day of the fast of atonement must be wiped out from among the people. 30 Any person who does any work on that very day, I will wipe that person out from among the people. 31 Do no work. This is a lasting statute throughout your generations wherever you live. 32 It must be a Sabbath of complete rest for you, and you must fast on it. On the ninth day of the month, from evening until evening, observe your fasts; rest and celebrate your appointed festivals with joy.”

The Festival of Booths

33 The Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 34 “Speak with the sons of Israel and say: On the fifteenth day of this seventh month is the Festival of Booths, for seven days before the Lord. 35 On the first day there must be a festival day and holy gathering; ⟨do no laborious work.⟩ 36 ⟨For seven days bring offerings before the Lord. On the eighth day⟩ there must be a festival day and holy gathering, and you must bring offerings before the Lord. It is a joyful assembly; do no laborious work. 37 These are the Lord’s appointed festivals that you must proclaim as festival days and holy gatherings, to bring offerings before the Lord: burnt offerings, grain offerings, sacrifices, and wine offerings, the fixed amount for each day on its day, 38 besides the Lord’s offerings you bring on the Lord’s holy Sabbaths, besides your gifts, all your vows, and all your voluntary offerings that you set apart to the name of the Lord. 39 But on the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when you gather the land’s produce, celebrate a festival day before the Lord for seven days. On the first day there must be a festival day and holy gathering, and on the eighth day a festival day and holy gathering. 40 On the first festival day take fruit from choice trees: citrons, palm branches, myrtle branches, and stream willows. Rejoice before the Lord your God for seven days. 41 Celebrate it as a festival before the Lord for seven days each year, a lasting statute throughout your generations. Celebrate it in the seventh month. 42 Live in booths for seven days; every native in Israel must live in tents, 43 so that your generations may know that I made the sons of Israel live in the cloud of the Glory of my Shekinah in the form of tents when I redeemed them and brought them out of the land of Egypt. I am the Lord your God.” 44 Moses declared the arrangements for the Lord’s appointed festivals and taught them to the sons of Israel.

The Lamps and the Bread of the Presence

Chapter 24

1 The Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 2 “Command the sons of Israel to take and bring you pure oil from beaten olives for lighting, to keep the lamps arranged continually. 3 Aaron must arrange them outside the curtain of the testimony in the tent of meeting, from evening until morning before the Lord continually. It is a lasting statute throughout your generations. 4 He must arrange the lamps on the pure lampstand continually. 5 Take fine flour and bake twelve cakes from it, two tenths in each cake. 6 Arrange them in two rows, six cakes in each row, on the pure table before the Lord. 7 Put pure frankincense on each row, so that the bread may be a memorial before the Lord. 8 Every Sabbath day he must arrange it before the Lord continually, from the sons of Israel as a lasting covenant. 9 It belongs to Aaron and his sons. They must eat it in a holy place, for it is most holy for him among the Lord’s offerings, as a lasting statute.”

The Man Who Blasphemed the Name

10 The son of an Israelite woman, whose father was an Egyptian, went out among the sons of Israel. The Israelite woman’s son and an Israelite man quarreled in the camp. 11 The Israelite woman’s son pronounced ⟨the holy name⟩ with blasphemies and reviled it. They brought him to Moses. His mother’s name was Shelomith daughter of Dibri, from the tribe of the sons of Dan. 12 This was one of four legal cases that came before Moses, which he settled through understanding from above. Moses acted quickly in two and slowly in two. In both kinds he said, “I have not heard.” Moses acted quickly in the case of the unclean people unable to observe Passover and the case of Zelophehad’s daughters, for their cases concerned property. Moses acted slowly in the case of the man who deliberately profaned the Sabbath by gathering wood and the blasphemer who pronounced his holy name with blasphemies, for their cases concerned life and death. This teaches the judges who arise after Moses to act quickly in property cases and slowly in capital cases, so that they do not hastily kill even someone legally deserving death, in case another argument for his acquittal is found at trial. They must not be ashamed to say, “We have not heard.” Moses the master said, “I have not heard.” They kept him in custody until it was explained to them from before the Lord by what judgment he should be put to death. 13 The Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 14 “Bring the blasphemer outside the camp. Those who heard him must rest their hands on his head, and all the people of the congregation must stone him. 15 Speak with the sons of Israel and say: Any man who pronounces God’s name with blasphemy will receive punishment for his sin. 16 Whoever pronounces the Lord’s name with blasphemy must be put to death; all the people of the congregation must stone him. Foreigner and native alike must be put to death when they pronounce God’s name with blasphemy.

Injury and Compensation

17 A man who kills any human life must be put to death. 18 Whoever kills an animal’s life must compensate for it, a life compensating for a life. 19 A man who causes a defect in his neighbor must have done to him what he did. 20 Fracture must compensate for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth; whatever defect was inflicted on a person must be inflicted on him. 21 Whoever kills an animal must compensate for it, but whoever kills a person must be put to death. 22 You must have one judicial procedure, the same for foreigner and native, for I am the Lord your God.” 23 Moses spoke with the sons of Israel, and they took the blasphemer outside the camp and stoned him with stones. The sons of Israel did as the Lord commanded Moses.

The Sabbath Year

Chapter 25

1 The Lord spoke with Moses ⟨on Mount Sinai,⟩ saying: 2 “Speak with the sons of Israel and tell them: When you enter the land I give you, the land must observe a Sabbath to the name of the Lord. 3 Sow your fields for six years, prune your vineyards for six years, and gather their produce. 4 But in the seventh year the land must have a Sabbath of complete rest, rest before the Lord. Do not sow your fields or prune your vineyards. 5 Do not reap the second growth of your harvests or pick the grapes you left behind. It must be a Sabbath of complete rest for the land. 6 The produce of the land’s rest will be food for you, your male slave, your female slave, your hired worker, your migrant, and the foreigner living among you. 7 All its produce will also be food for your livestock and the wild animals in your land.

The Jubilee Year

8 Count seven periods of rest, seven times seven years, so that the days of the ⟨seven⟩ periods of rest amount to forty-nine years. 9 Sound the trumpet of alarm in the seventh month on the tenth day of the month; on the fast day of atonement sound the trumpet throughout your land. 10 Consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim liberty for the land and all its inhabitants. It will be a jubilee for you; each man must return to his property and each man to his family. 11 The fiftieth year will be a jubilee for you. Do not sow, reap your second growth, or pick the grapes left behind. 12 For it is a jubilee; it must be holy for you. Eat its produce from the open field. 13 In this jubilee year each of you must return to his property. 14 When you sell to your neighbors or buy from your neighbors, do not wrong one another. 15 Buy from your neighbor according to the number of years after the jubilee; he must sell to you according to the number of harvest years remaining. 16 Increase its price when there are many years and reduce its price when there are few, for he is selling you a number of harvests. 17 Do not wrong one another, but fear your God, for I am the Lord your God. 18 Carry out my statutes, keep my judgments and carry them out, and live securely in the land. 19 The land will give its produce, and you will eat and be satisfied, living securely in it. 20 If you say, ‘What will we eat in the seventh year if we do not sow or gather its produce?’ 21 I will command my blessing for you in the sixth year, and the land will produce enough for three years. 22 You will sow in the eighth year and eat the old produce until the ninth year. Until its produce comes in, you will eat the old.

Redeeming Land and Houses

23 The land must not be sold permanently, for the land is mine; you are residents and temporary residents before me. 24 Throughout the land you possess, you must allow redemption of the land. 25 If your brother becomes poor and sells some of his property, his nearest relative must come and redeem what his brother sold. 26 If a man has no redeemer but becomes prosperous and finds the means to redeem it, 27 he must count the years since its sale, repay the balance to the man to whom he sold it, and return to his property. 28 If he cannot find the means to repay him, what he sold will remain in the buyer’s possession until the jubilee year. In the jubilee it must be released, and he must return to his property. 29 If a man sells a dwelling house in a walled city, he may redeem it until a year from its sale is complete. Its redemption is possible for that number of days. 30 If it is not redeemed before a full year is complete, the house in the walled city will belong permanently to the buyer throughout his generations. It will not be released in the jubilee. 31 Houses in villages with no surrounding wall must be counted within the land’s boundaries. They may be redeemed and must be released in the jubilee. 32 The Levites always have the right to redeem the houses in the cities they possess. 33 Whatever a Levite must redeem, a house sold in a city they possess must be released in the jubilee, for the houses in the Levites’ cities are their property among the sons of Israel. 34 But the land around your cities must not be sold, for it is their permanent property.

Supporting the Poor

35 If your brother becomes poor and cannot support himself with you, support him. He must be with you as a foreigner and temporary resident. 36 Do not receive interest or profit from him, but fear your God. Let your brother live with you. 37 Do not lend him your money at interest or your food for profit. 38 I am the Lord your God who redeemed you and brought you out of the land of Egypt, to give you the land of ⟨Canaan,⟩ so that my Memra may be your redeeming God.

Israelites Sold into Service

39 If your brother becomes poor and sells himself to you, do not enslave him as slaves are customarily enslaved. 40 He must be with you as a hired worker and temporary resident, serving with you until the jubilee year. 41 Then he and his sons with him must leave you and return to his family and his fathers’ property. 42 For they are servants whom I brought redeemed out of the land of Egypt; they must not be sold as slaves are customarily sold. 43 Do not make him serve harshly, but fear your God. 44 As for the male and female slaves you may have, buy male and female slaves only from the nations around you. 45 You may also buy from the migrants living among you and their families with you, whom they fathered in your land. They may be your property. 46 You may bequeath them to your sons after you as a permanent inherited possession and make them serve. But among your brothers, the sons of Israel, no one may make another serve harshly.

Redeeming an Israelite Sold to a Foreigner

47 If a foreigner or temporary resident with you becomes wealthy, and your brother with you becomes poor and sells himself to the foreigner or temporary resident with you, or to a descendant of a foreigner’s family, 48 after he sells himself he has the right of redemption. One of his brothers must redeem him, 49 or his father’s brother, his father’s brother’s son, or a close blood relative from his family may redeem him. If he becomes prosperous, he may redeem himself. 50 He must settle accounts with his buyer from the year he sold himself until the jubilee year. His sale price must be calculated by the number of years; his time with him is like that of a hired worker. 51 If many years remain, he must refund his redemption price from his sale price in proportion to those years. 52 If few years remain until the jubilee year, he must settle accounts with him and refund his redemption price according to his years of service. 53 He must be with him as a worker hired year by year. He must not be made to serve harshly before you. 54 If he is not redeemed in these ways, he and his sons with him must be released in the jubilee year. 55 For the sons of Israel are servants to my name. They are my servants whom I brought redeemed out of the land of Egypt. I am the Lord your God.”

Rejecting Idols and Keeping the Sabbath

Chapter 26

1 Do not make idols or ⟨images⟩ for yourselves, erect pillars for yourselves, or put a stone that is a cast idol in your land to bow before it, for I am the Lord your God. 2 Observe his holy Sabbaths and pray with reverence in my sanctuary. I am the Lord.

Blessings for Obedience

3 If you follow the statutes of my Law, keep my commands, and carry them out, 4 I will give your land’s rain at its proper time. The land will give its produce, and the trees in the open field will flourish with fruit. 5 Your threshing will last until the grape harvest, and the grape harvest until sowing. You will eat your bread and be satisfied, living securely in your land. 6 I will give peace in the land. You will sleep with no one to disturb you. I will abolish from the land the power of kingdoms compared to wild beasts, and the enemy’s sword will not pass through your land. 7 You will pursue your enemies, and they will fall before you, killed by the sword. 8 Five of you will pursue a hundred, and a hundred of you will put ten thousand to flight. Your enemies will fall before you, killed by the sword. 9 I will turn my gracious Memra toward you, strengthen you, multiply you, and uphold my covenant with you. 10 You will eat old produce grown old, clearing away the old before the new. 11 I will make the Glory of my Shekinah dwell among you, and my soul will not reject you. 12 My Memra will walk among you, and my Memra will be your redeeming God. You will be a people of holy ones for my name. 13 I am the Lord your God who redeemed you from being their oppressed slaves and brought you out of the land of Egypt. I broke the yoke of Egyptian servitude from you, which weighed heavily on you like an iron yoke, and led you out ⟨with an⟩ upright ⟨posture⟩.

Punishments for Disobedience

14 But if you do not listen to the teaching of my Law or carry out all these commands of mine, 15 if you despise the statutes of my Law and your souls reject my judgments, refusing to carry out all my commands and breaking my covenants, 16 I will do this to you: I will call up against you in haste wasting disease and fever that destroy the eyes and consume life. You will sow your seed in vain, for your enemies will eat it. 17 I will set my fiercely angry face against you. You will be struck down before your enemies, and those who hate you will rule over you. You will flee with no one pursuing you. 18 If despite these punishments you do not listen to the teaching of my Law, I will continue punishing you sevenfold for your sins. 19 I will destroy my sanctuary, the strength of your army. I will make the skies above you strong as iron, so that they drop neither dew nor rain for you, and the ground below you hard as copper, so that it grows no plants for you. 20 Your strength will be spent in vain. Your land will not give its produce, and the trees in the open field will not flourish with fruit. 21 If you act stubbornly before me and refuse to listen to the teaching of my Law, I will heap sevenfold plagues on you according to your sins. 22 I will send the beasts of the open field against you. They will bereave you, destroy your livestock, reduce your numbers, and leave your paths deserted. 23 If these punishments do not correct you before my Memra and you continue acting stubbornly before me, 24 I too will act harshly with you, striking you sevenfold more than you have sinned. 25 I will send those who draw the sword after you to take vengeance on you for breaking my covenants. If you gather in your towns, I will send pestilence among you, and you will be handed over to your enemies. 26 When I break your supply of food, ten women will bake your bread in one oven and return your bread by weight. You will eat without being satisfied. 27 If despite this you do not listen to the teaching of my Law and act stubbornly with me, 28 I too will act with you in anger and harshness, striking you sevenfold more than you have sinned. 29 How serious the offenses are, how great the sins are that caused our fathers in Jerusalem to eat the flesh of their sons; they ate the flesh of their daughters. 30 I will devastate your altars, destroy your idols, and put your corpses on the corpses of your detestable things. My soul will reject you. 31 I will leave your towns in ruins and your sanctuaries deserted. I will not accept your offerings with favor as a pleasing aroma. 32 I too will leave the land deserted, and your enemies living in it will be appalled at it. 33 I will scatter you among the nations and send those who draw the sword after you. Your land will be deserted and your towns ruined. 34 Thus the land will enjoy its Sabbaths of rest throughout the days it lies uninhabited by you while you are exiled in your enemies’ land. Thus the land will rest and enjoy its Sabbaths of rest. 35 Throughout the days it lies uninhabited by you, it will rest the rest it did not have during your Sabbath years when you lived on it. 36 I will put brokenness in the hearts of those of you who remain in your enemies’ land. The sound of leaves rubbing together and falling will pursue them. They will flee as from those who draw the sword and fall with no one pursuing them. 37 They will stumble against one another as before those who draw the sword, before a pursuer who is not there. You will have no strength to stand before your enemies. 38 You will perish among the nations, and your enemies’ land will devour you. 39 Those of you who remain will waste away for their sins in their enemies’ land. They will also waste away with them for their fathers’ sins.

Confession and the Covenant

40 They will confess their sins and their fathers’ sins in the falsehoods they spoke before me, and that they acted stubbornly before me. 41 I too will act stubbornly with them and lead them into their enemies’ land, unless their malicious heart is broken and they make amends for their sins. 42 ⟨I will remember in my Memra the covenant I made with Jacob at Bethel, and the covenant I made with Isaac on Mount Moriah. I will also remember with mercy the covenant I made with Abraham between the divided pieces, and remember the land of Israel with mercy.⟩ 43 ⟨The land will remain abandoned by them, enjoying its Sabbaths of rest throughout the days it lies deserted without them. They will cleanse their sins, measure for measure, judgment for judgment, for they despised my judgments and their souls rejected the statutes of my Law.⟩ 44 ⟨Yet even when they were exiled in their enemies’ land, I did not despise them in the kingdom of Babylon or reject them in the kingdom of Persia so as to break my covenant with them, for I am the Lord your God.⟩ 45 I will remember for them the covenant I made with the people of ancient times, whom I brought redeemed out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations, to be their redeeming God in my Memra. I am the Lord.” 46 These are my statutes, judgments, and decrees of the Law that the Lord established between his Memra and the sons of Israel on Mount Sinai through Moses.

Vows and Valuations

Chapter 27

1 The Lord spoke with Moses, saying: 2 “Speak with the sons of Israel and tell them: When a man makes an explicit vow of a person’s assessed value to the name of the Lord, 3 the assessment for a male from twenty to sixty years old must be fifty silver selas, according to the sanctuary sela. 4 For a female, the assessment must be thirty selas. 5 For someone from five to twenty years old, the assessment for a male must be twenty selas, and for a female ten selas. 6 For someone from one month to five years old, the assessment for a male must be five silver selas, and for a female three selas. 7 For someone sixty years old or older, the assessment for a male must be fifteen silver selas, and for a female ten selas. 8 If he is too poor to meet the assessment, he must present the person before the priest, and the priest must assess him according to what the one making the vow can afford.

Animals Dedicated by Vows

9 If it is an animal that may be brought as an offering before the Lord, anything set apart from it to the name of the Lord becomes holy. 10 He must not exchange it, good for bad or bad for good. If he exchanges one animal for another, both it and its replacement become holy. 11 If it is an unclean animal that may not be brought as an offering before the Lord, he must present the animal before the priest. 12 The priest must assess it, whether good or bad. The priest’s assessment will stand. 13 If he wishes to redeem it, he must add a fifth to its assessment.

Houses and Fields Dedicated by Vows

14 When a man consecrates his house as holy to the name of the Lord, the priest must assess it, whether good or bad. The priest’s assessment will stand. 15 If the one consecrating it wishes to redeem his house, he must add a fifth of the money, and it will be his. 16 When a man consecrates part of his inherited field to the name of the Lord, its assessment must be according to the seed it takes. Land sown with a kor of barley must be assessed at fifty silver selas. 17 If he consecrates his field from the jubilee year, its assessment must stand. 18 If he consecrates his field after the jubilee, the priest must calculate its price according to the years remaining until the jubilee year, reducing its assessment. 19 If the one consecrating the field wishes to redeem it, he must add a fifth of its monetary assessment, and it will remain his. 20 If he does not redeem the field and sells it to another man, it may no longer be redeemed. 21 When the field is released in the jubilee, it will be holy to the name of the Lord as a field set apart. It will belong to the priest as his property. 22 If he consecrates a field he bought to the name of the Lord, which is not part of his inherited field, 23 the priest must calculate the amount of its assessment until the jubilee year, and he must pay its assessment that day. It is holy to the name of the Lord. 24 In the jubilee year the field must return to the one from whom he bought it, the one who possessed the land. 25 Every assessment must be in sanctuary selas. Twenty maas make one sela.

Firstborn Animals and Dedicated Property

26 No one may consecrate an animal’s firstborn that must be set apart to the name of the Lord. Whether a bull or lamb, it belongs to the name of the Lord. 27 If it is an unclean animal, it may be redeemed at its assessment, ⟨adding a fifth of its value. If it is not redeemed, it must be sold at its assessment.⟩ 28 No offering a man sets apart to the name of the Lord from anything he owns, whether people, animals, or his inherited field, may be sold or redeemed. Every offering set apart is most holy to the name of the Lord. 29 No human being set apart as a dedicated offering may be redeemed; he must die.

Tithes

30 Every tithe of the land, whether from the land’s seed or the trees’ fruit, belongs to the name of the Lord. It is holy to the name of the Lord. 31 If a man wishes to redeem any of his tithe, he must add a fifth to it. 32 Every tithe of cattle and sheep, whatever passes under the staff, the tenth must be holy to the name of the Lord. 33 He must not examine whether it is good or bad or exchange it. If he replaces it, both it and its replacement become holy; it must not be redeemed.” 34 These are the commands the Lord commanded Moses for the sons of Israel on Mount Sinai.
