Chapter 12

1 Now these are the priests and the Levites that went up with Zerubbabel the son of Shealtiel and Jeshua: Seraiah, Jeremiah, Ezra, 2 Amariah, Malluch, 3 Shecaniah. 4  5  6  7 These were the chiefs of the priests, and their brothers in the days of Jeshua. 8 And the Levites were, Jeshua, Binnui, Kadmiel, Sherebiah, Judah, Mattaniah: he was over the bands, and his brothers 9 for the daily courses. 10 And Jeshua fathered Joiakim, and Joiakim fathered Eliashib, and Eliashib fathered Joiada, 11 and Joiada fathered Jonathan, and Jonathan fathered Jaddua. 12 And in the days of Joiakim, his brothers the priests and the heads of families were, belonging to Seraiah, Meraiah; to Jeremiah, Hananiah; 13 to Ezra, Meshullam; to Amariah, Jehohanan; 14 to Malluch, Jonathan; to Shecaniah, Joseph; 15 to Harim, Adna; to Meraioth, Helkai; 16 to Iddo, Zechariah; to Ginnethon, Meshullam; 17 to Abijah, Zichri; to Benjamin, at the seasons; to Piltai; 18 to Bilgah, Shammua; to Shemaiah, Jonathan; 19 to Joiarib, Mattenai; to Jedaiah, Uzzi; 20 to Sallai, Kallai; to Amok, Ebed; 21 to Hilkiah, Hashabiah; to Jedaiah, Nethanel. 22 The Levites in the days of Eliashib, Joiada, and Johanan, and Jaddua, were recorded heads of families: also the priests, in the reign of Darius the Persian. 23 The sons of Levi, heads of families, were written in the book of the chronicles, even to the days of Johanan son of Eliashib. 24 And the heads of the Levites were Hashabiah, and Sherebiah, and Jeshua: and the sons of Kadmiel, and their brothers over against them, were to sing hymns of praise, according to the commandment of David the man of God, course by course. 25 When I gathered the gatekeepers, 26 it was in the days of Joiakim son of Jeshua, son of Jozadak, and in the days of Nehemiah: and Ezra the priest was scribe. 27 And at the dedication of the wall of Jerusalem they sought the Levites in their places, to bring them to Jerusalem, to keep a feast of dedication and gladness with thanksgiving, and they sounded cymbals with songs, and had lutes and harps. 28 And the sons of the singers were assembled both from the neighborhood around Jerusalem, and from the villages, 29 and from the country: for the singers built themselves villages by Jerusalem. 30 And the priests and the Levites purified themselves, and they purified the people, and the porters, and the wall. 31 And I brought up the princes of Judah on the wall, and I appointed two great companies for thanksgiving, and they passed on the right hand on the wall of the dung-gate. 32 And after them went Hoshaiah, and half the princes of Judah, 33 and Azariah, and Ezra, and Meshullam, 34 and Judah, and Benjamin, and Shemaiah and Jeremiah. 35 And some of the sons of the priests with trumpets, Zechariah son of Jonathan, son of Shemaiah, son of Mattaniah, son of Micaiah, son of Zaccur, son of Asaph: 36 and his brothers, Shemaiah, and Uzziel, to praise with the hymns of David the man of God; and Ezra the scribe was before them, 37 at the gate of Ain over against them, and they went up by the steps of the city of David, in the ascent of the wall, above the house of David, even to the water-gate eastward. 38 And the second company for thanksgiving went on to meet them, and I behind it, and half of the people on the wall, above the tower of Thennurim, and as far as the broad wall, 39 and above the gate of Ephraim, and to the gate of Jeshanah, and to the fish-gate, and by the tower of Hananel, and as far as the sheep-gate: and they stood in the gate of the guard. 40 And the two companies for thanksgiving stood in the house of God, and I, and half of the captains with me; 41 and the priests, Eliakim, Maaseiah, Benjamin, Micaiah, Elioenai, Zechariah, Hananiah, with trumpets; 42 and Maaseiah, and Shemaiah, and Eleazar, and Uzzi, and Jehohanan, and Malchijah, and Elam, and Ezer. And the singers were heard, and were numbered. 43 And in that day they offered great sacrifices, and rejoiced; for God had made them very joyful: and their wives and their children rejoiced: and the joy in Jerusalem was heard from afar off. 44 And in that day they appointed men over the treasuries, for the treasures, the first fruits, and the tithes, and for the chiefs of the cities who were assembled among them, to furnish portions for the priests and Levites: for there was joy in Judah over the priests and over the Levites that waited. 45 And they kept the charges of their God, and the charges of the purification, and ordered the singers and the porters, according to the commandments of David and his son Solomon. 46 For in the days of David Asaph was originally first of the singers, and they sang hymns and praise to God. 47 And all Israel in the days of Zerubbabel gave the portions of the singers and the porters, a daily rate: and consecrated them to the Levites: and the Levites consecrated them to the sons of Aaron.

Summary

Nehemiah 12 lists six men who guarded the storerooms at the gates. The Greek Septuagint translation removes every name and instead has Nehemiah say that he gathered the gatekeepers, changing it to be written from his perspective.

Passages

Nehemiah 12:25

Hebrew Bible
24 And the leaders of the Levites were Hashabiah, Sherebiah, Jeshua son of Kadmiel, and their colleagues, who stood opposite them to offer praise and thanks, one contingent corresponding to the other, as specified by David the man of God. 25 Mattaniah, Bakbukiah, Obadiah, Meshullam, Talmon, and Akkub were gatekeepers who were guarding the storerooms at the gates. 26 These all served in the days of Joiakim son of Jeshua, the son of Jozadak, and in the days of Nehemiah the governor and of Ezra the priestly scribe.

LXX Nehemiah 12:25

Septuagint
24 And the heads of the Levites were Hashabiah, and Sherebiah, and Jeshua: and the sons of Kadmiel, and their brothers over against them, were to sing hymns of praise, according to the commandment of David the man of God, course by course. 25 When I gathered the gatekeepers, 26 it was in the days of Joiakim son of Jeshua, son of Jozadak, and in the days of Nehemiah: and Ezra the priest was scribe.

References

“... The Vorlage of the translation matches the Masoretic Text of Ezra and Nehemiah for the most part. There is a variety of small minuses of one to three words, but there are also more significant differences, such as at 4.14 where ‘Now because we share the salt of the palace’ is lacking in the Greek (see further on chapter 4 below) and at 18.3 where ‘facing the square before the Water Gate from early morning’ becomes ‘from the hour the sun dawned until half the day’, owing both to a minus in the Greek and to the expansion of מן האור to ἀπὸ τῆς ὥρας τοῦ διαφωτίσαι τὸν ἥλιον (διαφωτίσαι ‘to dawn’ being a hapax legomenon in the Septuagint canon). In addition to these, in the Nehemiah material there are significant minuses in the Greek with respect to the Hebrew, at Nehemiah 3.37-38 (14.6 Septuagint); 9(19).5, 36-37; 11(21).12-35; and 12(22).2-9, 25, 29. Although it is possible that these may be due merely to textual corruption, it is also possible that they are evidence of a pre-Masoretic version of the book (Knoppers, ‘Sources’, pages 141–68; Fulton, ‘Where’). ...”
