Chapter 11

1 And the chiefs of the people lived in Jerusalem: and the rest of the people cast lots, to bring one of every ten to dwell in Jerusalem the holy city, and nine parts in the other cities. 2 And the people blessed all the men that volunteered to dwell in Jerusalem. 3 Now these are the chiefs of the province who lived in Jerusalem, and in the cities of Judah; every man lived in his possession in their cities: Israel, the priests, and the Levites, and the Nethinim, and the children of the servants of Solomon. 4 And there lived in Jerusalem some of the children of Judah, and of the children of Benjamin. Of the children of Judah; Athaiah son of Azaia, the son of Zechariah, the son of Amariah, the son of Shephatiah, the son of Mahalalel, and some of the sons of Perez; 5 and Maaseiah son of Baruch, son of Col-Hozeh, son of Uzziah, son of Adaiah, son of Joiarib, son of Thezia, son of Seloni. 6 All the sons of Perez who lived in Jerusalem were four hundred and sixty-eight men of might. 7 And these were the children of Benjamin; Sallu son of Meshullam, son of Joed, son of Pedaiah, son of Kolaiah, son of Maaseiah, son of Ithiel, son of Jeshaiah. 8 And after him Gabbai, Sallai, nine hundred and twenty-eight. 9 And Joel son of Zichri was overseer over them: and Judah son of Hassenuah was second in the city. 10 Of the priests: both Jedaiah son of Joiarib, and Jachin. 11 Seraiah, son of Hilkiah, son of Meshullam, son of Zadok, son of Meraioth, son of Ahitub, was over the house of God. 12 And their brothers doing the work of the house: Amzi son of Zechariah, son of Pashhur, son of Malchijah, 13 chiefs of families, two hundred and forty-two: and Amashsai son of Azarel, 14 and his brothers, mighty men of war, one hundred and twenty-eight: and their overseer was Zabdiel. 15 And of the Levites; Shemaiah, son of Hasshub, son of Ezri, 16  17 Mattaniah son of Mica, and Obed son of Shammua, 18 two hundred and eighty-four. 19 And the porters; Akkub, Talmon, and their brothers, one hundred and seventy-two. 20  21  22 And the overseer of the Levites was the son of Bani, son of Uzzi, son of Hashabiah, the son of Mica. Of the sons of Asaph the singers some were over the work of the house of God, 23 For so was the king's commandment concerning them. 24 And Pethahiah son of Baseza was in attendance on the king in every matter for the people, 25 and with regard to villages in their country district: and some of the children of Judah lived in Kiriath Arba, 26 and in Jeshua, 27 and in Beersheba: 28  29  30 And their villages were Lachish and her fields: and they pitched their tents in Beersheba. 31 And the children of Benjamin lived from Geba to Michmash. 32  33  34  35  36 And of the Levites there were divisions of Judah for Benjamin.

Summary

Nehemiah 11 lists thirty-two towns and villages where Judeans and Benjaminites settled outside Jerusalem. The Greek Septuagint translation names only six, and the area it describes is a small part of the territory the Hebrew refers to.

“... The list is divided into two parts. Following a summary of the Judean settlements, an overview of places where Benjaminites settled follows. The final verse about Judah’s Levites who joined Benjamin is, presumably, a later addition. The Judean occupation would extend to Ber Sheba. In Persian times, and still afterwards, the southern part of the land of Judah was in the possession of the Edomites and later the Idumeans. The list of settlements in 25-36 in the Septuagint is significantly shorter than in the Masoretic Text. Of the 32 places in the Masoretic Text, there are only six in the Septuagint. Usually, the Septuagint is seen as a shortened form of the text (Williamson). Fulton takes the view that the Masoretic Text is an extended version of the more original Septuagint that reflects the Hellenistic period. Her argument, however, does not convince. ...”
