Chapter 10

1 Hear the word of the Lord, which he has spoken to you, house of Israel. 2 Thus says the Lord, Do not learn the ways of the pagan nations, and do not be alarmed at the signs of the sky; for they are alarmed at them, falling on their faces. 3 For the customs of the nations are vain; it is a tree cut out of the forest, the work of the carpenter, or a molten image. 4 They are beautified with silver and gold, they fix them with hammers and nails, and they shall not be moved. 5  6  7  8  9 It is forged silver, they will not walk; silver plates beaten out shall come from Tarshish, gold from Uphaz, and the hand of goldsmiths; they are all the works of craftsmen: they will clothe them with blue and purple. 5 They must certainly be borne, for they cannot ride of themselves. Do not fear them; for they cannot do any evil, and there is no good in them. 10  11 Thus you will say to them, Let the gods which have not made heaven and earth perish from the earth, and from under this sky. 12 It is the Lord that made the earth by his strength, who set up the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding stretched out the sky, 13 and set abundance of waters in the sky, and brought up clouds from the ends of the earth; he made lightnings for the rain, and brought forth light out of his treasures. 14 Every man is deprived of knowledge, every goldsmith is confounded because of his carved images; for he has cast false gods, there is no breath in them. 15 They are vain works, made in mockery; in the time of their visitation they shall perish. 16 Such is not the portion of Jacob; for he that formed all things, he is his inheritance; the Lord is his name. 17 He has gathered your substance from without, you that dwell in choice vessels. 18 For thus says the Lord, Look, I will overthrow the inhabitants of this land with affliction, that your plague may be revealed. 19 Alas for your ruin! your plague is severe: and I said, Surely this is my wound, and it has overtaken me. 20 My tabernacle is in a ruinous state, it has perished; and all my curtains have been torn apart: my children and my sheep are no more: there is no more any place for my tabernacle, nor place for my curtains. 21 For the shepherds have become foolish, and have not sought the Lord; therefore the whole pasture has failed, and the sheep have been scattered. 22 Look, there comes a sound of a noise, and a great earthquake from the land of the north, to make the cities of Judah a desolation, and a resting-place for ostriches. 23 I know, Lord, that man's way is not his own; neither shall a man go, and direct his going. 24 Discipline us, Lord, but with judgment; and not in fierce anger, for fear that you might make us few. 25 Pour out your fierce anger upon the nations that have not known you, and upon the families that have not called upon your name: for they have devoured Jacob, and consumed him, and have made his pasture desolate.

Summary

Jeremiah 10 has an out-of-place sentence praising God in the middle of rhetoric criticizing idols. The Greek Septuagint translation does not have this sentence, suggesting that the extra sentence was added in the Masoretic Hebrew tradition.

Passages

Jeremiah 10:10

Hebrew Bible
9 Hammered-out silver is brought from Tarshish and gold is brought from Ufaz to cover those idols. They are the handiwork of carpenters and goldsmiths. They are clothed in blue and purple clothes. They are all made by skillful workers. 10 The Lord is the only true God. He is the living God and the everlasting King. When he shows his anger, the earth shakes. None of the nations can stand up to his fury. 11 You people of Israel should tell those nations this: ‘These gods did not make heaven and earth. They will disappear from the earth and from under the heavens.’

LXX Jeremiah 10:9

Septuagint
9 It is forged silver, they will not walk; silver plates beaten out shall come from Tarshish, gold from Uphaz, and the hand of goldsmiths; they are all the works of craftsmen: they will clothe them with blue and purple. 5 They must certainly be borne, for they cannot ride of themselves. Do not fear them; for they cannot do any evil, and there is no good in them. 10 11 Thus you will say to them, Let the gods which have not made heaven and earth perish from the earth, and from under this sky. 12 It is the Lord that made the earth by his strength, who set up the world by his wisdom, and by his understanding stretched out the sky,

"... The prophecy described in Jeremiah 10:1–11 in the Masoretic Text contains both mockery of idols and praise of the Lord. The text refers with disdain to the idols’ manmade origins and their inability to walk, speak, or do any harm or good. The mockery is included in verses 2–5, 8–9, 11, while the remaining verses 6–7 and 10 praise the Lord. The verses containing this praise are lacking in the Septuagint (LXX), as well as in the Qumran scroll 4QJerB. Many scholars believe that these shorter texts reflect the original form of Jeremiah 10, and that the tradition behind the Masoretic text reflects a later text in which the praise of the Lord has been added in order to stress the futility of the idols. The addition of these verses in the tradition of the Masoretic text went together with the splitting up of verse 5 into two parts. In the development of Scripture, usually elements were added, not deleted. Moreover, it is intrinsically more plausible that verses of praise were added than omitted ..."
