Chapter 15

1 And then she came to the divine supreme commander and stood in front of him, and the angel of the Lord said to her: "Take the head covering off your head now, because today you are a pure virgin, and your head is like a young man's." 2 And Asenath removed it from her head. And again the divine angel said to her: "Take heart, Asenath, pure virgin, for look, the Lord God heard all the words of your confession and your prayer, and he has also seen your humble state and suffering during the seven days of your self-denial, because your tears have formed thick mud on these ashes in front of you. 3 So take heart, Asenath, pure virgin, for look, your name has been written in the book of life and will never be erased; 4 but from today you shall be renewed and refashioned and given new life, and you shall eat the blessed bread of life and drink a cup full of immortality and be anointed with the blessed perfumed oil of incorruptibility. 5 Take heart, Asenath, pure virgin, look, the Lord God has given you to Joseph as his bride today, and he himself shall be your groom forever. 6 And from now on you will no longer be called Asenath, but your name shall be 'City of Refuge,' because in you many nations shall seek refuge and they shall take shelter under your wings, and many nations shall find shelter through you, and on your walls those who cling to God Most High through repentance shall be kept secure; 7 because Repentance is the daughter of the Most High, and she herself pleads with God Most High for you every hour and for all who repent, since he is the father of Repentance, and she herself is the perfection of all virgins and the one who watches over them, loving you deeply and pleading with the Most High for you every hour, and for all who repent she will provide a place of rest in the heavens, and she renews everyone who has repented. 8 And Repentance is very beautiful, a pure, gentle and mild virgin; and therefore God Most High loves her, and all the angels revere her, and I love her deeply, because she herself also is my sister, and because she loves you virgins, I also love you. 9 And look, I am going to Joseph and will tell him all these words about you, and he will come to you today and see you and be delighted with you and love you and be your groom, and you shall be his beloved bride forever. 10 So listen to me, Asenath, and put on a wedding robe, your ancient, original robe that has long been stored in your room, and put on all your finest jewelry too, and make yourself look like a good bride and make yourself ready to meet him; 11 for look, he himself is coming to you today and will see you and be delighted." 12 And, when the angel of the Lord in the shape of a man had finished speaking these words to Asenath, she was overjoyed by everything he had said, 13 and fell on her face on the ground, and bowed down at his feet and said to him: "Blessed is the Lord your God who sent you to rescue me from the darkness and to bring me from the foundations of the abyss itself into the light, and blessed is your name forever. 14 If then I have found favor with you, my lord, and can know that you will fulfill everything you have told me, let your female servant speak to you." And the angel said to her, "Speak." And she said: "Please, lord, sit for a little while on this bed, because this bed is pure and undefiled, because no other man or woman has ever sat on it, and I will set a table and bread in front of you, and you shall eat, and I will also bring you fine aged wine, whose fragrance will reach heaven, and you shall drink it and afterward go on your way." And he said to her: "Hurry and bring it quickly."

Summary

Joseph and Aseneth describes Aseneth’s name written in the heavenly book of the living, also found in Luke where the disciples' names are written in heaven. Both follow a tradition of divine record keeping from the ancient Near East and Hebrew Bible.

Passages

Luke 10:20

New Testament
19 Look, I have given you authority to tread on snakes and scorpions and on the full force of the enemy, and nothing will hurt you. 20 Nevertheless, do not rejoice that the spirits submit to you, but rejoice that your names stand written in heaven.” 21 On that same occasion Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit and said, “I praise you, Father, Lord of heaven and earth, because you have hidden these things from the wise and intelligent and revealed them to little children. Yes, Father, for this was your gracious will.

"... The longer reconstruction modifies and supplements the statement that Aseneth's name is written in the Book of Life, changing this to the Book of the Living in heaven and specifying that her name was written by the speaker's finger. The tradition of a divine list of names occurs in Exodus 32:32-33, and Jubilees 30:22 (and 36:10) specifically mentions a 'book of life.' Imputing the writing of the book to 'the finger' of the angelic being may relate to Exodus 31.18, where the tablets of stone are written by the finger of God. This motif recurs shortly, at 15.12x, in the longer text only ... (other references include 1 QM 12; Luke 10:20: Revelation 20:12, 15 ... Philonenko's list is more extensive: Isaiah 4:3; Daniel 12:1; 1 Enoch 47:3, 104:1, 108:3) ..."
