Scripture Promises the Resurrection

Chapter 26

1 Do we then think it a great and marvelous thing if the Creator of the universe brings about the resurrection of those who have served Him in holiness, in the assurance of a good faith, when He shows us the magnificence of His promise even through a bird? 2 For He says somewhere “And You shall raise me up, and I will praise You;” and; “I went to rest and slept, I was awakened, for You are with me.” 3 And again Job says “And You shall raise up this flesh of mine, which has endured all these things.”

Summary

In 1 Clement, the author quotes Job 19 from the Greek Septuagint translation as one of four proofs that God will raise the dead, reading its promise about flesh very literally, much as some rabbis argue for resurrection from scripture.

Passages

LXX Job 19:26

Septuagint
21 Pity me, pity me, friends; for it is the hand of the Lord that has touched me. 22 Why do you persecute me as also the Lord does, and are not satisfied with my flesh? 23 For if only my words were written, and that they were recorded in a book forever, 24 with an iron pen and lead, or engraved in the rocks! 25 For I know that he is eternal who is about to deliver me on the earth, 26 and to raise up my skin that endures these sufferings: for these things have been accomplished to me of the Lord; 27 which I am conscious of in myself, which my eye has seen, and not another, but all have been fulfilled to me in my bosom.

“... No conflict with Judaism is in evidence in 1 Clement. Sometimes the author derives doctrinal lessons from the OT: for example, 1 Clement 26 supports the resurrection by a catena of references (Ps 27:7; 3:6; 22:4 LXX; Job 19:26) given an overly literal interpretation in the fashion of some rabbinic interpretations. ...”
