Other Examples of Humility

Chapter 17

1 Let us be imitators also of those who went about in goatskins and sheepskins, preaching the coming of Christ. We mean Elijah and Elisha and likewise Ezekiel, the prophets, and besides them those men also who were well spoken of. 2 Abraham was very well spoken of and was called the friend of God; and gazing at the glory of God, he says in humility, “But I am dust and ashes.” 3 And about Job it is also written: “And Job was righteous and blameless, one who was true and honored God and kept away from all evil.” 4 Yet he accuses himself, saying, “No one is free from filth, not even if his life lasts only a day.” 5 Moses was called faithful in all His house, and through his service God judged Egypt with the plagues and the torments that came upon them. Yet he too, though greatly glorified, spoke no proud words, but said, when an oracle was given to him at the bush, “Who am I, that You send me?” 6 “No, I am weak in speech and slow of tongue.” And again he says, “But I am smoke from the pot.”

Hebrews describes unnamed prophets who traveled around in sheepskins and goatskins, enduring destitution and persecution. 1 Clement echoes this and names the figures as Elijah, Elisha, and Ezekiel.

Passages

Hebrews 11:37

New Testament
35 and women received back their dead raised to life. But others were tortured, not accepting release, to obtain resurrection to a better life. 36 And others experienced mocking and flogging, and even chains and imprisonment. 37 They were stoned, sawed apart, murdered with the sword; they went about in sheepskins and goatskins; they were destitute, afflicted, ill-treated 38 (the world was not worthy of them); they wandered in deserts and mountains and caves and openings in the earth.

“... The following words are echoed by Clement of Rome when he exhorts his readers to be imitators of those who 'went about in sheepskins and goatskins', announcing the advent of Christ; he refers, he says, to the prophets Elijah and Elisha, and also Ezekiel (I Clem. 17:1). Elijah, we know, wore "a garment of hair . . . and a girdle of leather about his loins" (II Kings 1:8, RSV); and in the Ascension of Isaiah those who accompanied Isaiah to his wilderness retreat "were all clothed in garments of hair" (Ch. 2:10). But the whole description of those who, roughly clad like this, endured destitution, affliction and ill-treatment as they wandered in desolate places and sought the shelter of caves, reminds us especially of those godly Jews who fled from the persecution under Antiochus Epiphanes [...] ...”
