About this book

Obey God, Not the Leaders of the Rebellion

Chapter 14

1 Therefore it is right and proper, brothers and sisters, for us to be obedient to God, rather than follow those who in arrogance and disorder have set themselves up as leaders in abominable jealousy. 2 For we will bring on ourselves no ordinary harm, but rather great danger, if we recklessly surrender ourselves to the purposes of men who plunge into strife and rebellion, so as to turn us away from what is right. 3 Let us be good to one another, in keeping with the compassion and gentleness of Him who made us. For it is written: 4 “The good shall dwell in the land, and the innocent shall be left on it, but those who transgress shall be utterly destroyed from it.” 5 And again He says, “I saw the ungodly lifted up on high and exalted as the cedars of Lebanon. And I passed by, and look, he was not there; and I searched for his place and did not find it. Keep innocence and look to uprightness; for there is a remnant for the peaceful man.”

Summary

In 1 Clement, the author quotes Proverbs 2 in the Greek Septuagint translation, where the good keep the land and wrongdoers are removed from it, as a reason to side with the peaceful and not with the leaders of the revolt.

Passages

LXX Proverbs 2:21

Septuagint
16 to remove you far from the straight way, and to estrange you from a righteous purpose. 17 My son, let not evil counsel overtake you, of her who has forsaken the instruction of her youth, and forgotten the covenant of God. 18 For she has fixed her house near death, and guided her wheels near Hades with the giants. 19 None that go by her shall return, neither shall they take hold of right paths, for they are not apprehended by the years of life. 20 For had they gone in good paths, they would have found the paths of righteousness easy. 21 The kind shall be inhabitants of the earth, and the innocent shall be left in it; for the upright shall dwell in the earth, and the holy shall be left behind in it. 22 The paths of the ungodly shall perish out of the earth, and transgressors shall be driven away from it.
