Idolatry in the Temple

Chapter 25

1 I saw there the likeness of the idol of jealousy, resembling woodwork such as my father used to make, and its statue was of glittering bronze; and in front of it was a man, and he worshiped it; 2 and in front of him was an altar, and on it boys were being killed in the presence of the idol. 3 But I said to Him: "What is this idol, or what is the altar, or who are those being sacrificed, or who is making the sacrifice? Or what is the Temple I see with its beautiful craftsmanship, and its beauty (being like) the glory that lies beneath Your throne?" 4 And He said: "Listen, Abraham. What you see, the Temple and altar and beauty, is my idea of the priesthood of my glorious Name, where every human prayer dwells, along with the rise of kings and prophets, and whatever sacrifice I command to be offered to me among my people who will come from your descendants. 5 But the statue which you saw is my anger, because the people who will come from you for me will make me angry. 6 But the man whom you saw slaughtering is the one who angers me, and the sacrifice is the killing of those who are a witness to me of the final judgment, even at the beginning of creation."

Summary

In Ezekiel, the prophet sees an idol that provokes God’s jealousy inside the Temple. In the Apocalypse of Abraham, Abraham sees the same idol and compares it to Terah’s woodwork, linking Israel’s later idolatry to the idols Abraham rejected at home.

Passages

Ezekiel 8:5

Hebrew Bible
3 He stretched out the form of a hand and grabbed me by a lock of hair on my head. Then a wind lifted me up between the earth and sky and brought me to Jerusalem by divine visions, to the door of the inner gate that faces north where the statue that provokes to jealousy was located. 4 Then I perceived that the glory of the God of Israel was there, as in the vision I had seen earlier in the valley. 5 He said to me, “Son of man, look up toward the north.” So I looked up toward the north, and I noticed to the north of the altar gate was this statue of jealousy at the entrance.

“... 25:1 This verse is a combination of Ezek. 8:5 and 40:3 (according to LXX or rather Dan. 10:6). as a likeness of a craftsman’s [work] Cf., for example, Exod. 35:35 or Jer. 10:9; Hos. 13:2. There is a contradiction in the text: the idol is described as a “craftsman’s work” being at the same time “of shining copper.” The lost Greek text must have contained tekton, “craftsman” (Hebrew harash), with a meaning much wider than “carpenter.” ...”
