Apocalypse of Abraham

About this book
Chapter 22

1 And I said: "Eternal, Mighty One! What is this picture of the creatures?" 2 And He said to me: "This is my will for those who exist in the (divine) plan for the world and it seemed pleasing to me, and then afterward I gave them a command through my Word. And whatever I had decided would exist was already planned in advance in this (picture), and it stood in my presence before it was created, as you have seen." 3 And I said: "Lord, mighty and eternal! Who are the people in this picture on this side and the other?" 4 And He said to me: "Those who are on the left side are the many peoples who existed earlier and who after you are destined, some for judgment and restoration and others for vengeance and destruction at the end of the world. 5 But those who are on the right side of the picture are the people set apart for me of the peoples with Azazel. These are the ones I have destined to be born from you and to be called My People.

Rabbinic tradition in Genesis Rabbah compares God creating the world to a builder working from plans, identified with the Torah. In the Apocalypse of Abraham, God works from a similar plan, showing Abraham a picture of all he planned before creation.

Genesis Rabbah 1:1

Rabbinic · Aggadah
The Torah is saying: ‘I was the tool of craft of the Holy One blessed be He.’ The way of the world is that when a flesh-and-blood king builds a palace he does not build it based on his own knowledge, but rather based on the knowledge of an artisan. And the artisan does not build it based on his own knowledge, but rather, he has [plans on] sheets and tablets by which to ascertain how he should build its rooms, how he should build its doors. So too, the Holy One blessed be He looked in the Torah and created the world.

“... The whole conception is strongly predestinarian; the whole course of creation—the rise of evil, and the coming of the righteous—is predetermined; cf. 1 Enoch xciii., cvi. 19, cvii. 1, and Charles’s note on 1 Enoch xlvii. 3. A strong expression of this idea occurs in 4 Ezra iv. 36, 37. [...] In the Rabbinical literature Israel’s election is spoken of as predestined before the creation of the world, and this idea is applied to certain other things, such as the name of the Messiah, the Torah, and repentance. In such connexions they often employ the figure of an architect and plans. One passage (Gen. rabba i.) runs: When a man erects a building, at the time when the building is erected he enlarges it as it is erected, or otherwise he enlarges it below, and contracts it above: but the Holy One . . . does not act thus, but “the heavens” (which He created) were the heavens which had ascended in (His) thought, and “the earth” (which He created) was the earth which had ascended in His thought. ...”
