About this book
Chapter 47

1 And in those days, the prayers of the righteous and the blood of the righteous shall ascend from the earth before the Lord of Spirits. 2 In those days, the holy ones who dwell above in the heavens shall unite with one voice to plead, pray, praise, give thanks, and bless the name of the Lord of Spirits on behalf of the blood of the righteous that has been shed, so that the prayers of the righteous may not be in vain before the Lord of Spirits, so that justice may be done for them, and that they may not suffer forever. 3 In those days, I saw the Head of Days when He seated himself upon the throne of His glory, and the books of the living were opened before Him; and all His army which is in heaven above and His counselors stood before Him. 4 And the hearts of the holy were filled with joy because the number of the righteous had been offered, the prayer of the righteous had been heard, and the blood of the righteous had been required before the Lord of Spirits.

Summary

1 Enoch describes the prayers of righteous martyrs being heard once a predetermined number have died. Revelation follows this pattern when the martyrs are told to rest until their number is complete, using this tradition to explain suffering.

1 Enoch 47:4

Pseudepigrapha, Apocalypses
3 In those days, I saw the Head of Days when He seated himself upon the throne of His glory, and the books of the living were opened before Him; and all His army which is in heaven above and His counselors stood before Him. 4 And the hearts of the holy were filled with joy because the number of the righteous had been offered, the prayer of the righteous had been heard, and the blood of the righteous had been required before the Lord of Spirits.

Revelation 6:11

New Testament
9 Now when the Lamb opened the fifth seal, I saw under the altar the souls of those who had been violently killed because of the word of God and because of the testimony they had given. 10 They cried out with a loud voice, “How long, Sovereign Master, holy and true, before you judge those who live on the earth and avenge our blood?” 11 Each of them was given a long white robe, and they were told to rest for a little longer, until the full number was reached of both their fellow servants and their brothers who were going to be killed just as they had been. 12 Then I looked when the Lamb opened the sixth seal, and a huge earthquake took place; the sun became as black as sackcloth made of hair, and the full moon became blood red; 13 and the stars in the sky fell to the earth like a fig tree dropping its unripe figs when shaken by a fierce wind.

"... Verse 4b indicates that God has predetermined how many will die, and that number is about to be reached. The remarkable parallel to the motifs in this passage in Revelation 6:10-11 may indicate knowledge of the Parables ... For the notion that the end-time has 'drawn near' see Mark 1:15 ..."
