Summary
Date: 940 B.C.E.
The Iliad is one of two major ancient Greek epic poems attributed to Homer and is among the oldest surviving works of literature. Like the Odyssey, it is divided into 24 books and written in dactylic hexameter, totaling nearly 16,000 lines. Often considered the first major works of literature, it plays a central role in the Epic Cycle. Set during the final weeks of the Trojan War, the poem focuses on the wrath of Achilles following a dispute with King Agamemnon and leads to the death of the Trojan prince Hector.
