Summary

Date: c. 120 C.E.

Hierocles' treatise on household management, preserved as a fragment in Stobaeus' Anthology (4.85.21). Hierocles, a Stoic philosopher active under Hadrian (around 117 to 138 CE), divides the works of the household between husband and wife, assigning outdoor and public tasks to the husband and indoor domestic tasks (spinning wool, breadmaking, cooking) to the wife. The English text is based on Thomas Taylor's 1822 translation (originally titled "On Economics"), with archaic language lightly modernized.
