Summary

Date: 2100 BCE

The Coffin Texts are a collection of ancient Egyptian funerary spells inscribed on coffins during the Middle Kingdom (c. 2100-1650 BCE). They developed from the earlier Pyramid Texts and were later adapted into the Book of the Dead. The collection includes cosmogonic texts in which the primeval serpent claims to possess supreme knowledge, wisdom, and creative power.
