Avot de Rabbi Natan

Minor Tractate

Summary

Date: 700-900 C.E.

Avot de Rabbi Natan is a minor tractate and a companion to Pirkei Avot, pairing maxims of wisdom with the stories and explanations that developed around them. Like Pirkei Avot, its organization is chronological, beginning with statements of early rabbis and continuing through successive generations. Its sayings are tannaitic, though the compilation itself belongs to a later period, and its precise relationship to Pirkei Avot is a matter of debate. The tractate survives in two distinct recensions which are known as A and B; Recension A stays close to the traditional printed text. The English text is the Sefaria translation of Recension A by David Kasher (2019), used under a CC BY license.
