Summary
Date: 400-600 C.E.
In 3 Enoch, Rabbi Ishmael passes through the six palaces of heaven to the seventh, where the archangel Metatron brings him before God's throne. Metatron reveals that he was once Enoch, the son of Jared, whom God took up from the earth and made into an angel set over all the others. He then shows Ishmael the ranks of angels, the heavenly court and its liturgy, the curtain before God on which the whole of history is written, and the souls of the righteous, the wicked and the stars. Its original title appears to have been Sefer Hekhalot, the Book of the Palaces.
