The Treaty between Suppiluliumas and Kurtiwaza

A duplicate of this tablet has been deposited before the Sun-goddess of Arinna, because the Sun-goddess of Arinna regulates kingship and queenship. In the land of Mitanni a duplicate has been deposited before Teššub, the lord of the kurinnu of Kahat. At regular intervals they shall read it in the presence of the king of the land of Mitanni and in the presence of the sons of the land of the Hurri. Whoever removes this tablet from before Teššub, the lord of the kurinnu of Kahat, and places it in a hidden location, or breaks it, or causes another to alter the wording of the tablet, the gods are hereby called together at the conclusion of this treaty. If you, Kurtiwaza, the prince, and you, the Hurrians, do not fulfill the words of this treaty, may the gods, the lords of the oath, blot you out, you Kurtiwaza and you the Hurrian men, together with your land, your wives, and all that you possess. May they draw you out like malt from its husk. Just as no plant grows from seed taken from a field, so may you, Kurtiwaza, take a second wife and produce no offspring, and may the Hurrians likewise take wives and produce no seed. May these gods of the contracting parties bring misery and poverty upon you. May they overturn your throne, yours, Kurtiwaza. May the oaths sworn before these gods break you like reeds, you Kurtiwaza, together with your land. May they eradicate from the earth your name and your offspring born of a second wife. May they send uninterrupted war into your land, from the midst of the Hurrians who have rebelled. May the earth become cold and slippery beneath you so that you fall. May the soil of your land become hardened quagmire so that you sink and never cross it. May you, Kurtiwaza, and you, the Hurrians, be hateful to the thousand gods, and may they pursue you. If, on the other hand, you, Kurtiwaza, the prince, and you, the Hurrians, fulfill this treaty and this oath, may these gods protect you, Kurtiwaza, together with your wife, the daughter of the land of Hatti, her children and her children’s children, and also you, the Hurrians, together with your wives, your children, and your children’s children, together with your land. May the land of Mitanni return to the place it formerly occupied. May it thrive and expand. May you, Kurtiwaza, your sons and your sons’ sons descended from the daughter of the Great King of the land of Hatti, and you, the Hurrians, exercise kingship forever. May the throne of your father endure. May the land of Mitanni endure.
