1 Shema spoke with Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, in the tent of meeting, on the first of the second month, in the second year of their going out from the land of Egypt, saying, 2 "Take the total of the assembly of the children of Israel by their families, by their fathers' house, by the count of names, every male, head by head. 3 From twenty years old and upward, everyone in Israel who goes out to the army, you shall count them by their armies, you and Aaron. 4 With you there shall be a man for each tribe, each man the head of his fathers' house. 5 These are the names of the men who shall stand with you: for Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur; 6 for Simeon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai; 7 for Judah, Nahshon son of Amminadab; 8 for Issachar, Nethanel son of Zuar; 9 for Zebulun, Eliab son of Helon; 10 for the sons of Joseph: for Ephraim, Elishama son of Ammihud; for Manasseh, Gamaliel son of Pedahzur; 11 for Benjamin, Abidan son of Gideoni; 12 for Dan, Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai; 13 for Asher, Pagiel son of Ochran; 14 for Gad, Eliasaph son of Deuel; 15 for Naphtali, Ahira son of Enan." 16 These are the ones summoned from the assembly, the leaders of their fathers' tribes; they are the heads of the thousands of Israel. 17 Moses and Aaron took these men who had been named by their names, 18 and they gathered the whole assembly on the first of the second month, and [the people] were set in order by their families, by their fathers' house, by the count of names, from twenty years old and upward, head by head. 19 As Shema had commanded Moses, he counted them in the wilderness of Sinai. 20 The sons of Reuben, Israel's firstborn, were, by their generations, by their families, by their fathers' house, by the count of names, every male head by head, from twenty years old and upward, everyone who goes out to the army: 21 those counted of the tribe of Reuben were forty-six thousand five hundred. 22 Of the sons of Simeon, by their generations, by their families, by their fathers' house, by the count of names, head by head, every male from twenty years old and upward, everyone who goes out to the army: 23 those counted of the tribe of Simeon were fifty-nine thousand three hundred. 24 Of the sons of Gad, by their generations, by their families, by their fathers' house, by the count of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone who goes out to the army: 25 those counted of the tribe of Gad were forty-five thousand six hundred and fifty. 26 Of the sons of Judah, by their generations, by their families, by their fathers' house, by the count of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone who goes out to the army: 27 those counted of the tribe of Judah were seventy-four thousand six hundred. 28 Of the sons of Issachar, by their generations, by their families, by their fathers' house, by the count of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone who goes out to the army: 29 those counted of the tribe of Issachar were fifty-four thousand four hundred. 30 Of the sons of Zebulun, by their generations, by their families, by their fathers' house, by the count of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone who goes out to the army: 31 those counted of the tribe of Zebulun were fifty-seven thousand four hundred. 32 Of the sons of Joseph, of the sons of Ephraim, by their generations, by their families, by their fathers' house, by the count of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone who goes out to the army: 33 those counted of the tribe of Ephraim were forty thousand five hundred. 34 Of the sons of Manasseh, by their generations, by their families, by their fathers' house, by the count of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone who goes out to the army: 35 those counted of the tribe of Manasseh were thirty-two thousand two hundred. 36 Of the sons of Benjamin, by their generations, by their families, by their fathers' house, by the count of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone who goes out to the army: 37 those counted of the tribe of Benjamin were thirty-five thousand four hundred. 38 Of the sons of Dan, by their generations, by their families, by their fathers' house, by the count of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone who goes out to the army: 39 those counted of the tribe of Dan were sixty-two thousand seven hundred. 40 Of the sons of Asher, by their generations, by their families, by their fathers' house, by the count of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone who goes out to the army: 41 those counted of the tribe of Asher were forty-one thousand five hundred. 42 Of the sons of Naphtali, by their generations, by their families, by their fathers' house, by the count of names, from twenty years old and upward, everyone who goes out to the army: 43 those counted of the tribe of Naphtali were fifty-three thousand four hundred. 44 These are the ones counted whom Moses and Aaron and the leaders of Israel counted, twelve men; they were one man for each tribe, for the tribe of their fathers' house. 45 All the counted of the children of Israel by their armies, from twenty years old and upward, everyone in Israel who goes out to the army, 46 all the counted were six hundred and three thousand five hundred and fifty. 47 But the Levites were not counted among them by their fathers' tribe. 48 For Shema spoke with Moses, saying, 49 "Only the tribe of Levi you shall not count, and their total you shall not take among the children of Israel. 50 You are to put the Levites in charge of the tabernacle of the testimony, and of all its vessels, and of all that belongs to it. They shall carry the tabernacle and all its vessels, and they shall serve it, and they shall camp around the tabernacle. 51 When the tabernacle moves on, the Levites shall take it down, and when the tabernacle comes to rest, the Levites shall set it up; and the outsider who comes near shall be killed. 52 The children of Israel shall camp, each man by his camp and each man by his place, by their armies. 53 But the Levites shall camp around the tabernacle of the testimony, so that there will be no wrath on the assembly of the children of Israel; and the Levites shall keep the watch of the tabernacle of the testimony." 54 The children of Israel did according to all that Shema had commanded Moses; so they did.
1 And Shema spoke with Moses and with Aaron, saying, 2 "Each man by his standard, with the signs of their fathers' house, the children of Israel shall camp; opposite [it], around the tent of meeting, they shall camp. 3 Those camping on the east, toward the sunrise, [shall be] the standard of the camp of Judah by their hosts, and the chief of the children of Judah [shall be] Nahshon son of Amminadab. 4 His host and its counted men: seventy-four thousand six hundred. 5 Those camping beside him [shall be] the tribe of Issachar, and the chief of the children of Issachar [shall be] Nethanel son of Zuar. 6 His host and its counted men: fifty-four thousand four hundred. 7 Then the tribe of Zebulun, and the chief of the children of Zebulun [shall be] Eliab son of Helon. 8 His host and its counted men: fifty-seven thousand four hundred. 9 All the counted men of the camp of Judah: one hundred thousand and eighty-six thousand four hundred, by their hosts. They shall move out first. 10 The standard of the camp of Reuben [shall be] to the south by their hosts, and the chief of the children of Reuben [shall be] Elizur son of Shedeur. 11 His host and its counted men: forty-six thousand five hundred. 12 Those camping beside him [shall be] the tribe of Simeon, and the chief of the children of Simeon [shall be] Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai. 13 His host and its counted men: fifty-nine thousand three hundred. 14 Then the tribe of Gad, and the chief of the children of Gad [shall be] Eliasaph son of Deuel. 15 His host and its counted men: forty-five thousand six hundred and fifty. 16 All the counted men of the camp of Reuben: one hundred thousand and fifty-one thousand four hundred and fifty, by their hosts. They shall move out second. 17 Then the tent of meeting shall move out, the camp of the Levites in the middle of the camps. As they camp, so they shall move out, each man at his place, by their standards. 18 The standard of the camp of Ephraim [shall be] to the west by their hosts, and the chief of the children of Ephraim [shall be] Elishama son of Ammihud. 19 His host and its counted men: forty thousand five hundred. 20 Beside him [shall be] the tribe of Manasseh, and the chief of the children of Manasseh [shall be] Gamaliel son of Pedahzur. 21 His host and its counted men: thirty-two thousand two hundred. 22 Then the tribe of Benjamin, and the chief of the children of Benjamin [shall be] Abidan son of Gideoni. 23 His host and its counted men: thirty-five thousand four hundred. 24 All the counted men of the camp of Ephraim: one hundred thousand and eight thousand one hundred, by their hosts. They shall move out third. 25 The standard of the camp of Dan [shall be] to the north by their hosts, and the chief of the children of Dan [shall be] Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai. 26 His host and its counted men: sixty-two thousand seven hundred. 27 Those camping beside him [shall be] the tribe of Asher, and the chief of the children of Asher [shall be] Pagiel son of Ochran. 28 His host and its counted men: forty-one thousand five hundred. 29 Then the tribe of Naphtali, and the chief of the children of Naphtali [shall be] Ahira son of Enan. 30 His host and its counted men: fifty-three thousand four hundred. 31 All the counted men of the camp of Dan: one hundred thousand and fifty-seven thousand six hundred. They shall move out last, by their standards." 32 These are the counted men of the children of Israel by their fathers' house. All the counted men of the camps by their hosts: six hundred thousand and three thousand five hundred and fifty. 33 But the Levites were not counted among the children of Israel, as Shema had commanded Moses. 34 And the children of Israel did according to all that Shema had commanded Moses. So they camped by their standards, and so they moved out, each man by his family, according to his fathers' house.
1 These are the generations of Aaron and Moses on the day Shema spoke with Moses on Mount Sinai. 2 These are the names of the sons of Aaron: Nadab the firstborn, and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. 3 These are the names of the sons of Aaron, the anointed priests, whom Aaron installed to serve as priests. 4 Nadab and Abihu died when they offered outside fire before Shema in the wilderness of Sinai, and they had no sons. So Eleazar and Ithamar served as priests in the presence of Aaron their father. 5 Shema spoke with Moses, saying, 6 "Bring the tribe of Levi near and stand it before Aaron the priest, and they will serve him. 7 They will keep his watch and the watch of the whole assembly before the tent of meeting, to carry out the service of the tabernacle. 8 They will keep all the vessels of the tent of meeting and the watch of the Israelites, to carry out the service of the tabernacle. 9 You will give the Levites to Aaron and his sons; they are given, given to me from among the Israelites. 10 You will appoint Aaron and his sons, and they will keep their priesthood; and the outsider who comes near will be killed." 11 Shema spoke with Moses, saying, 12 "As for me, see, I have taken the Levites from among the Israelites in place of every firstborn that opens the womb among the Israelites. They will be [their] redemption, and the Levites will be mine. 13 For is not every firstborn mine? On the day I killed every firstborn in the land of Egypt, I consecrated to myself every firstborn in Israel, from human to beast; they will be mine. I am Shema." 14 Shema spoke with Moses in the wilderness of Sinai, saying, 15 "Count the sons of Levi by their fathers' house, by their families; count every male from a month old and up." 16 Moses counted them at the word of Shema, as he had commanded him. 17 These were the sons of Levi by their names: Gershon, Kohath and Merari. 18 These are the names of the sons of Gershon by their families: Libni and Shimei. 19 The sons of Kohath by their families: Amram and Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel. 20 The sons of Merari by their families: Mahli and Mushi. These are the families of the Levites by their fathers' house. 21 To Gershon belonged the Libnite family and the Shimeite family; these are the Gershonite families. 22 Their roll, by the count of every male from a month old and up, numbered seven thousand five hundred. 23 The Gershonite family will camp behind the tabernacle, to the west. 24 The chief of the father's house for the Gershonites is Eliasaph son of Lael. 25 The watch of the sons of Gershon in the tent of meeting is the tabernacle and the tent, its covering, and the screen for the entrance of the tent of meeting, 26 the hangings of the court, the screen for the entrance of the court that surrounds the tabernacle and the altar, and its cords, for all its service. 27 To Kohath belonged the Amramite family, the Izharite family, the Hebronite family and the Uzzielite family; these are the Kohathite families. 28 By the count of every male from a month old and up, [there were] eight thousand six hundred, keeping the watch of the sanctuary. 29 The family of the sons of Kohath will camp along the side of the tabernacle, to the south. 30 The chief of the father's house for the Kohathite families is Elizaphan son of Uzziel. 31 Their watch is the ark, the table, the lampstand, the altars, the holy vessels they serve with, the screen, the basin and its stand, and all their service. 32 The chief over the chiefs of the Levites is Eleazar son of Aaron the priest, appointed [over] those who keep the watch of the sanctuary. 33 To Merari belonged the Mahlite family and the Mushite family; these are the families of Merari. 34 Their roll, by the count of every male from a month old and up, [was] six thousand two hundred. 35 The chief of the father's house for the families of Merari is Zuriel son of Abihail; they will camp along the side of the tabernacle, to the north. 36 The assigned watch of the sons of Merari is the boards of the tabernacle, its bars, its pillars, its sockets, all its vessels and all its service, 37 the pillars of the court all around, their sockets, their pegs and their cords. 38 Those who camp in front of the tabernacle to the east, before the tent of meeting toward the east, are Moses, Aaron and his sons, keeping the watch of the sanctuary on behalf of the Israelites; and the outsider who comes near will be killed. 39 All the counted Levites whom Moses counted at the word of Shema, by their families, every male from a month old and up, [were] twenty-two thousand. 40 Shema said to Moses, "Count every firstborn male among the Israelites from a month old and up, and take the count of their names. 41 Take the Levites for me, I am Shema, in exchange for every firstborn among the Israelites, and the cattle of the Levites in exchange for every firstborn among the cattle of the Israelites." 42 Moses counted every firstborn among the Israelites, as Shema had commanded him. 43 Every firstborn male, by the count of names from a month old and up, numbered twenty-two thousand two hundred seventy-three. 44 Shema spoke with Moses, saying, 45 "Take the Levites in exchange for every firstborn among the Israelites, and the cattle of the Levites in exchange for their cattle, and the Levites will be mine. I am Shema. 46 As the redemption of the two hundred seventy-three firstborn of the Israelites who exceed the Levites, 47 you will take five shekels for each head; you will take [them] by the shekel of the sanctuary, twenty gerahs to the shekel. 48 You will give the money to Aaron and his sons, the redemption of those who are in excess among them." 49 Moses took the redemption money from those in excess beyond the redemption of the Levites; 50 from the firstborn of the Israelites he took the silver, one thousand three hundred sixty-five by the shekel of the sanctuary. 51 Moses gave the redemption money to Aaron and his sons at the word of Shema, as Shema had commanded Moses.
1 And Shema spoke with Moses and with Aaron, saying: 2 “Count the heads of the sons of Kohath from among the sons of Levi, by their families, by their fathers’ house, 3 from thirty years old and upward, [all who join] the host to do work in the tent of meeting. 4 This is the service of the sons of Kohath in the tent of meeting: the holy of holies. 5 When the camp moves out, Aaron and his sons shall go in and take down the curtain of the screen, and with it they shall cover the ark of the testimony. 6 They shall put on it a covering of black hide, spread over it a cloth wholly of blue on top, and set its poles in place. 7 Over the table of favor they shall spread a blue cloth, and put on it the dishes, the ladles, the bowls and the cups of the drink offering; and the continual bread shall be on it. 8 They shall spread over them a covering, a cloth dyed scarlet, cover it with a covering of black hide, and set its poles in place. 9 They shall take a blue cloth and cover the lampstand of the lighting, its lamps, its tongs, its firepans, and all the oil vessels they use to serve it. 10 They shall put it and all its vessels inside a covering of black hide and set [it] on a carrying pole. 11 Over the golden altar they shall spread a blue cloth, cover it with a covering of black hide, and set its poles in place. 12 They shall take all the vessels of service that they use to serve in the sanctuary, put [them] inside a blue cloth, cover them with a covering of black hide, and set [them] on a carrying pole. 13 They shall clear the ashes from the altar and spread a purple cloth over it. 14 They shall put on it all its vessels that they use to serve on it: the firepans, the forks, the shovels and the basins, all the vessels of the altar. They shall spread over it a covering of black hide and set its poles in place. Then they shall take a purple cloth, cover the laver and its stand, put them inside a covering of black hide, and set [them] on a carrying [pole]. 15 When Aaron and his sons have finished covering the sanctuary and all the vessels of the sanctuary as the camp moves out, after that the sons of Kohath shall come in to carry; but they must not draw near the holy things, or they will die. These are the loads of the sons of Kohath in the tent of meeting. 16 The charge of Eleazar son of Aaron the priest: the oil for the lighting, the incense of spices, the continual grain offering and the anointing oil; the oversight of the whole tabernacle and all that is in it, in the sanctuary and in its vessels.” 17 And Shema spoke with Moses and with Aaron, saying: 18 “Do not uproot the tribe of the family of the Kohathites from among the Levites. 19 Do this for them, so that they live and do not die when they approach the holy of holies: Aaron and his sons shall go in and assign them, each man to his service and to his load. 20 But they shall not go in to look on the sanctuary even for an instant, or they will die.” 21 And Shema spoke with Moses, saying: 22 “Count the heads of the sons of Gershon as well, by their fathers’ house, by their families. 23 From thirty years old and upward until fifty years old you shall count them, all who come in to serve in the host, to perform service in the tent of meeting. 24 This is the service of the family of the Gershonites, in serving and in carrying: 25 they shall carry the curtains of the tabernacle and the tent of meeting, its covering and the black covering that is on it above, and the screen for the door of the tent of meeting, 26 and the hangings of the court, and the screen for the doorway of the court's gate, the court which is around the tabernacle and the altar, together with their cords and all the vessels of their service; and all that is to be done with them, they shall serve. 27 All the service of the sons of the Gershonites shall be at the word of Aaron and his sons, in all their loads and in all their service; and you shall assign them all their loads to keep in their charge. 28 This is the service of the family of the sons of the Gershonites in the tent of meeting, and their charge [is] in the hand of Ithamar son of Aaron the priest. 29 The sons of Merari: you shall count them by their families, by their fathers’ house. 30 From thirty years old and upward until fifty years old you shall count them, all who join the host to perform the service of the tent of meeting. 31 This is the charge of their loads, for all their service in the tent of meeting: the boards of the tabernacle, its bars, its pillars and its sockets, 32 and the pillars of the court all around, with their sockets, their pegs and their cords, with all their vessels and all their service; and you shall assign by name all the vessels of the charge of their loads. 33 This is the service of the family of the sons of Merari, for all their service in the tent of meeting, in the hand of Ithamar son of Aaron the priest.” 34 And Moses and Aaron and the chiefs of the assembly counted the sons of the Kohathites by their families, by their fathers’ house, 35 from thirty years old and upward until fifty years old, all who joined the host to serve in the tent of meeting. 36 Their counted men by their families were two thousand seven hundred and fifty. 37 These are the counted men of the family of the Kohathites, all who serve in the tent of meeting. 38 And the counted men of the sons of Gershon, by their families, by their fathers’ house, 39 from thirty years old and upward until fifty years old, all who joined the host to serve in the tent of meeting: 40 their counted men by their families, by their fathers’ house, were two thousand six hundred and thirty. 41 These are the counted men of the family of the sons of Gershon, all who serve in the tent of meeting, whom Moses and Aaron counted at the word of Shema. 42 And the counted men of the family of the sons of Merari, by their families, by their fathers’ house, 43 from thirty years old and upward until fifty years old, all who joined the host to serve in the tent of meeting: 44 their counted men by their families were three thousand two hundred. 45 These are the counted men of the family of the sons of Merari, whom Moses and Aaron counted at the word of Shema by the hand of Moses. 46 All the counted men whom Moses and Aaron and the chiefs of Israel counted of the Levites, by their families, by their fathers’ house, 47 from thirty years old and upward until fifty years old, all who came in to perform the work of service and the work of carrying in the tent of meeting: 48 their counted men were eight thousand five hundred and eighty. 49 At the word of Shema he counted them by the hand of Moses, each man to his service, to his load and to his assignment, as Shema commanded Moses.
1 And Shema spoke with Moses, saying: 2 “Command the children of Israel to send out of the camp every leper, everyone with a discharge, and everyone defiled by a [dead] person. 3 Male and female alike you shall send outside the camp; send them out, so that they do not defile their camps, in whose midst I dwell.” 4 And all the children of Israel did [so] and sent them outside the camp; as Shema had spoken with Moses, so the children of Israel did. 5 And Shema spoke with Moses, saying: 6 “Speak with the children of Israel, saying: A man or a woman, if they commit any of the sins of humankind, acting falsely against Shema, and that person becomes guilty, 7 they shall confess the sin they committed, and he shall restore the guilt in its principal, add a fifth to it, and give it to the one he wronged. 8 If the man has no redeemer to whom the guilt can be restored, the guilt restored to Shema [goes] to the priest, besides the ram of forgiveness with which he obtains forgiveness for him. 9 And every contribution from all the holy things of the children of Israel that they bring to the priest shall be his. 10 A man’s holy things shall be his own, and whatever a man gives to the priest shall be [the priest’s]. 11 And Shema spoke with Moses, saying: 12 “Speak with the children of Israel and say to them: If any man’s wife strays and acts falsely against him, 13 and a man lies with her carnally, and it is hidden from her husband’s eyes, and she is concealed though she has been defiled, and there is no witness against her, and she was not caught, 14 and a spirit of jealousy passes over him and he is jealous of his wife, and she has been defiled; or a spirit of jealousy passes over him and he is jealous of his wife, and she has not been defiled, 15 then the husband shall bring his wife to the priest, and bring her offering for her: a tenth of a measure of barley flour. He shall not pour oil on it or put frankincense on it, for it is a grain offering of jealousy, a grain offering of remembrance that recalls sin. 16 The priest shall bring her near and stand her before Shema. 17 The priest shall take holy water in a clay vessel, and the priest shall take some of the dust that is on the floor of the tabernacle and put [it] into the water. 18 The priest shall stand the woman before Shema, uncover the woman’s head, and put in her palms the grain offering of remembrance, which is the grain offering of jealousy; and in the priest’s hand shall be the bitter water that brings the curse. 19 The priest shall make her swear, and say to the woman: ‘If no man has lain with you, and if you have not strayed into defilement while under your husband, be cleared by this bitter water that brings the curse. 20 But if you have strayed while under your husband, and if you have been defiled, and a man other than your husband has lain with you’ — 21 then the priest shall make the woman swear with the oath of the curse, and say to her — ‘May Shema make you a curse and an oath among your people, as Shema makes your thigh waste away and your belly swell. 22 This water that brings the curse shall enter your insides to make the belly swell and the thigh waste away.’ And the woman shall say, ‘Amen, amen.’ 23 The priest shall write these curses in a book and wipe [them] off into the bitter water. 24 He shall make the woman drink the bitter water that brings the curse, and the water that brings the curse shall enter her to bring the curse. 25 The priest shall take the grain offering of jealousy from the woman’s hand, wave the grain offering before Shema, and bring it near to the altar. 26 The priest shall lift its memorial portion from the grain offering and burn [it] on the altar, and afterward he shall make the woman drink the water. 27 When he has made her drink the water, if she has been defiled and has acted falsely against her husband, the water that brings the curse shall enter her to bring the curse; her belly shall swell and her thigh waste away, and the woman shall become a curse among her people. 28 But if the woman has not been defiled and she is pure, she shall be cleared and shall conceive offspring. 29 This is the law of jealousy, when a wife strays while under her husband and is defiled, 30 or [when] a spirit of jealousy passes over a man and he is jealous of his wife: he shall stand the woman before Shema, and the priest shall carry out on her all this law. 31 The husband shall be cleared of sin, and that woman shall bear her sin.”
1 And Shema spoke with Moses, saying: 2 "Speak with the children of Israel and tell them: When a man or a woman sets [himself] apart to make a Nazirite vow, to dedicate himself to Shema, 3 he shall abstain from wine and strong drink. He shall not drink vinegar of wine or vinegar of strong drink, he shall not drink anything steeped from grapes, and he shall not eat grapes, fresh or dried. 4 All the days of his dedication he shall eat nothing made from the wine vine, from the seeds to the skin. 5 All the days of his vow of dedication no razor shall pass over his head. Until the days that he dedicates himself to Shema are complete he shall be holy, letting the locks of the hair of his head grow long. 6 All the days of his dedication to Shema he shall not go in to a dead person. 7 He shall not make himself unclean for his father or for his mother, for his brother or for his sister, when they die, [for] the crown of his God is on his head. 8 All the days of his dedication he is holy to Shema. 9 If someone dies beside him all of a sudden, and the head of his dedication becomes unclean, he shall shave his head on the day of his cleansing; on the seventh day he shall shave it. 10 On the eighth day he shall bring two turtledoves or two young doves into the hand of the priest, at the door of the tent of meeting. 11 The priest shall make one a sin offering and one a burnt offering, and shall atone for him, because he sinned over the dead person, and he shall consecrate his head on that day. 12 He shall dedicate to Shema the days of his dedication, and shall bring a year-old lamb as a guilt offering. The earlier days shall be void, because his dedication became unclean. 13 This is the law of the Nazirite: on the day the days of his dedication are complete, he shall be brought to the door of the tent of meeting, 14 and he shall present his offering to Shema: one year-old lamb without blemish as a burnt offering, one year-old ewe lamb without blemish as a sin offering, and one ram without blemish as peace offerings, 15 and a basket of unleavened [bread]: loaves of fine flour kneaded with oil, and unleavened wafers smeared with oil, along with their grain offering and their drink offerings. 16 The priest shall bring [them] near before Shema and shall make his sin offering and his burnt offering. 17 He shall make the ram a sacrifice of peace offerings to Shema, together with the basket of unleavened [bread], and the priest shall make its grain offering and its drink offering. 18 The Nazirite shall shave the head of his dedication at the door of the tent of meeting, and shall take some of the hair of the head of his dedication and put [it] on the fire that is under the sacrifice of peace offerings. 19 The priest shall take the boiled foreleg of the ram, one unleavened loaf from the basket and one wafer, and put [them] on the palms of the Nazirite after he has shaved off his dedication. 20 The priest shall wave them as a wave offering before Shema. It is holy, [and] shall belong to the priest, together with the breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the raised offering. After that the Nazirite may drink wine. 21 This is the law of the Nazirite who vows his offering to Shema for his dedication, besides whatever his hand can reach. As the vow he makes, so he shall do, by the law of his dedication." 22 Shema spoke with Moses, saying: 23 "Speak with Aaron and his sons, saying: This is how you shall bless the children of Israel. Say to them: 24 May Shema bless you and guard you. 25 May Shema make his favor shine toward you and be gracious to you. 26 May Shema lift his face toward you and grant you peace. 27 So they shall set my name on the children of Israel, and I will bless them."
1 And on the day Moses finished setting up the tabernacle, he anointed it and sanctified it and all its vessels, and the altar and all its vessels; he anointed them and sanctified them. 2 And the princes of Israel, the heads of their fathers' houses, offered; they were the princes of the tribes, they who stood over those who were counted. 3 Before Shema they brought their offering: six covered wagons and twelve oxen, a wagon for every two princes and an ox for each one; and they presented them before the tabernacle. 4 And Shema said to Moses: 5 "Take [these] from them, and let them be for carrying out the service of the tent of meeting; and give them to the Levites, to each man according to his service." 6 So Moses took the wagons and the oxen and gave them to the Levites. 7 The two wagons and the four oxen he gave to the sons of Gershon, according to their service; 8 and the four wagons and the eight oxen he gave to the sons of Merari, according to their service, under the hand of Ithamar son of Aaron the priest. 9 To the sons of Kohath he gave none, because the service of the sanctuary rested on them; they carry it on the shoulder. 10 And the princes offered the dedication of the altar on the day it was anointed; the princes brought their offering before the altar. 11 And Shema said to Moses, "One prince for a day, one prince for a day, they shall bring their offering for the dedication of the altar." 12 The one who brought his offering on the first day was Nahshon son of Amminadab, of the tribe of Judah. 13 His offering was one silver platter weighing one hundred and thirty [shekels] and one silver bowl of seventy shekels by the shekel of the sanctuary, both of them full of fine flour mixed with oil for a meal offering; 14 one ladle of ten [shekels of] gold, full of incense; 15 one young bull, one ram, one lamb a year old, for a burnt offering; 16 and one male goat for a sin offering; 17 and for the sacrifice of peace offerings, two oxen, five rams, five he-goats, five lambs a year old. This was the offering of Nahshon son of Amminadab. 18 On the second day Nethanel son of Zuar, prince of Issachar, offered. 19 He brought as his offering one silver platter weighing one hundred and thirty [shekels] and one silver bowl of seventy shekels by the shekel of the sanctuary, both of them full of fine flour mixed with oil for a meal offering; 20 one ladle of ten [shekels of] gold, full of incense; 21 one young bull, one ram, one lamb a year old, for a burnt offering; 22 and one male goat for a sin offering; 23 and for the sacrifice of peace offerings, two oxen, five rams, five he-goats, five lambs a year old. This was the offering of Nethanel son of Zuar. 24 On the third day, the prince of the sons of Zebulun, Eliab son of Helon: 25 his offering was one silver platter weighing one hundred and thirty [shekels] and one silver bowl of seventy shekels by the shekel of the sanctuary, both of them full of fine flour mixed with oil for a meal offering; 26 one ladle of ten [shekels of] gold, full of incense; 27 one young bull, one ram, one lamb a year old, for a burnt offering; 28 and one male goat for a sin offering; 29 and for the sacrifice of peace offerings, two oxen, five rams, five he-goats, five lambs a year old. This was the offering of Eliab son of Helon. 30 On the fourth day, the prince of the sons of Reuben, Elizur son of Shedeur: 31 his offering was one silver platter weighing one hundred and thirty [shekels] and one silver bowl of seventy shekels by the shekel of the sanctuary, both of them full of fine flour mixed with oil for a meal offering; 32 one ladle of ten [shekels of] gold, full of incense; 33 one young bull, one ram, one lamb a year old, for a burnt offering; 34 and one male goat for a sin offering; 35 and for the sacrifice of peace offerings, two oxen, five rams, five he-goats, five lambs a year old. This was the offering of Elizur son of Shedeur. 36 On the fifth day, the prince of the sons of Simeon, Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai: 37 his offering was one silver platter weighing one hundred and thirty [shekels] and one silver bowl of seventy shekels by the shekel of the sanctuary, both of them full of fine flour mixed with oil for a meal offering; 38 one ladle of ten [shekels of] gold, full of incense; 39 one young bull, one ram, one lamb a year old, for a burnt offering; 40 and one male goat for a sin offering; 41 and for the sacrifice of peace offerings, two oxen, five rams, five he-goats, five lambs a year old. This was the offering of Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai. 42 On the sixth day, the prince of the sons of Gad, Eliasaph son of Deuel: 43 his offering was one silver platter weighing one hundred and thirty [shekels] and one silver bowl of seventy shekels by the shekel of the sanctuary, both of them full of fine flour mixed with oil for a meal offering; 44 one ladle of ten [shekels of] gold, full of incense; 45 one young bull, one ram, one lamb a year old, for a burnt offering; 46 and one male goat for a sin offering; 47 and for the sacrifice of peace offerings, two oxen, five rams, five he-goats, five lambs a year old. This was the offering of Eliasaph son of Deuel. 48 On the seventh day, the prince of the sons of Ephraim, Elishama son of Ammihud: 49 his offering was one silver platter weighing one hundred and thirty [shekels] and one silver bowl of seventy shekels by the shekel of the sanctuary, both of them full of fine flour mixed with oil for a meal offering; 50 one ladle of ten [shekels of] gold, full of incense; 51 one young bull, one ram, one lamb a year old, for a burnt offering; 52 and one male goat for a sin offering; 53 and for the sacrifice of peace offerings, two oxen, five rams, five he-goats, five lambs a year old. This was the offering of Abidan son of Gideoni. 66 On the tenth day, the prince of the sons of Dan, Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai: 67 his offering was one silver platter weighing one hundred and thirty [shekels] and one silver bowl of seventy shekels by the shekel of the sanctuary, both of them full of fine flour mixed with oil for a meal offering; 68 one ladle of ten [shekels of] gold, full of incense; 69 one young bull, one ram, one lamb a year old, for a burnt offering; 70 and one male goat for a sin offering; 71 and for the sacrifice of peace offerings, two oxen, five rams, five he-goats, five lambs a year old. This was the offering of Ahira son of Enan. 84 This was the dedication of the altar, on the day it was anointed, from the princes of Israel: twelve silver platters, twelve silver bowls, twelve gold ladles; 85 one hundred and thirty [shekels] for each silver platter and seventy for each bowl; all the silver of the vessels two thousand four hundred [shekels] by the shekel of the sanctuary; 86 twelve gold ladles full of incense, ten [shekels] for each ladle by the shekel of the sanctuary; all the gold of the ladles one hundred and twenty [shekels]. 87 All the cattle for the burnt offering: twelve bulls, twelve rams, twelve lambs a year old, with their meal offering; and twelve male goats for a sin offering. 88 And all the cattle for the sacrifice of peace offerings: twenty-four bulls, sixty rams, sixty he-goats, sixty lambs a year old. This was the dedication of the altar after it was anointed. 89 And when Moses went into the tent of meeting to speak with him, he heard the voice speaking with him from above the atonement cover that is on the ark of the testimony, from between the two cherubim; and he spoke with him.
1 Shema spoke with Moses, saying: 2 "Speak with Aaron and tell him: When you kindle the lamps, the seven lamps are to shine out toward the front of the lampstand." 3 Aaron did so: he kindled the lamps toward the front of the lampstand, as Shema had commanded Moses. 4 This is how the lampstand was made: of hammered gold, hammered from its bases to its blossoms. He made the lampstand according to the vision Shema had shown Moses. 5 Shema spoke with Moses, saying: 6 "Take the Levites from among the children of Israel and purify them. 7 This is what you are to do to them to purify them: sprinkle the water of forgiveness on them; they are to pass a razor over all their flesh, wash their garments, and be pure. 8 They are to take a bull from the herd with its grain offering of fine flour mixed with oil, and you are to take a second bull from the herd for forgiveness. 9 Bring the Levites before the tent of meeting, and gather the whole congregation of the children of Israel. 10 Bring the Levites before Shema, and the children of Israel are to lay their hands on the Levites. 11 Aaron is to wave the Levites as a wave offering before Shema on behalf of the children of Israel, and they will be there to carry out the service of Shema. 12 The Levites are to lay their hands on the heads of the bulls, and he is to offer one as a sin [offering] and the other as a burnt offering, to win forgiveness for the Levites. 13 Stand the Levites before Aaron and before his sons, and wave them as a wave offering to Shema. 14 Separate the Levites from among the children of Israel, and the Levites will be mine. 15 After this the Levites are to go in to carry out the service of the tent of meeting, once you have purified them and waved them as a wave offering. 16 For they are given, wholly given, to me from among the children of Israel; in place of every firstborn who opens the womb among the children of Israel I have taken them for myself. 17 For every firstborn among the children of Israel is mine, human and animal alike; on the day I killed every firstborn in the land of Egypt, I set them apart as holy for myself. 18 I have taken the Levites in place of every firstborn among the children of Israel. 19 From among the children of Israel I have given the Levites as gifts to Aaron and his sons, to carry out the service of the children of Israel in the tent of meeting and to win forgiveness for the children of Israel, so that no plague strikes the children of Israel when the children of Israel come near the sanctuary." 20 Moses, Aaron and the whole congregation of the children of Israel did this to the Levites. The children of Israel did to them everything Shema had commanded Moses concerning the Levites. 21 The Levites cleansed themselves and washed their garments, and Aaron waved them as a wave offering before Shema, and Aaron won forgiveness for them to purify them. 22 After this the Levites went in to carry out their service in the tent of meeting before Aaron and his sons. As Shema had commanded Moses concerning the Levites, so they did to them. 23 Shema spoke with Moses, saying: 24 "This is what applies to the Levites: from twenty-five years old and upward a man is to enter the ranks of the service of the tent of meeting. 25 From fifty years old he is to withdraw from the ranks of the service and serve no longer. 26 He may join his brothers in the tent of meeting to keep watch, but he is not to perform service. This is what you are to do for the Levites in their duties."
1 Shema spoke with Moses in the wilderness of Sinai in the first month of the second year after they came out of the land of the Egyptians, saying: 2 "The children of Israel are to keep the Passover at its set time. 3 On the fourteenth day of this month, at dusk, they are to keep it at its set time; you are to keep it according to all its decrees and all its rulings." 4 Moses spoke with the children of Israel about keeping the Passover. 5 They kept the Passover in the first [month], on the fourteenth day of the month, at dusk, in the wilderness of Sinai. The children of Israel did everything Shema had commanded Moses. 6 There were men who had been defiled by a human corpse and could not keep the Passover on that day. They came before Moses and before Aaron on that day, 7 and those men said to him, "We are defiled by a human corpse. Why should we be held back from offering the offering of Shema at its set time among the children of Israel?" 8 Moses said to them, "Stay here, and let me hear what Shema will command concerning you." 9 Shema spoke with Moses, saying: 10 "Speak with the children of Israel, saying: If any man among you or among your generations is defiled by a corpse, or is on a distant road, he is still to keep the Passover to Shema. 11 They are to keep it in the second month, on the fourteenth day, at dusk; they are to eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. 12 They are to leave none of it until morning and break none of its bones. They are to keep it according to the whole decree of the Passover. 13 But the man who is pure and was not on a road, and still holds back from keeping the Passover, that person will be uprooted from his people. Because he did not offer the offering of Shema at its set time, that man will bear his guilt. 14 If a convert living with you keeps the Passover to Shema, he is to keep it according to the decree of the Passover and its rulings. You are to have one decree, for the convert and for the native of the land." 15 On the day the dwelling was set up, the cloud covered the dwelling, the tent of the testimonies; and in the evening it would be over the dwelling like the appearance of fire until morning. 16 So it was all the time: the cloud covered it, and the appearance of fire by night. 17 Whenever the cloud lifted from over the dwelling, after that the children of Israel would set out; and in the place where the cloud settled, there the children of Israel would camp. 18 At the word of Shema the children of Israel would set out, and at the word of Shema they would camp. As long as the cloud rested on the dwelling, they stayed in camp. 19 When the cloud lingered over the dwelling for many days, the children of Israel kept the watch of Shema and did not set out. 20 Sometimes the cloud stayed over the dwelling only a counted number of days; at the word of Shema they would camp, and at the word of Shema they would set out. 21 Sometimes the cloud stayed from evening until morning, and when the cloud lifted in the morning, they set out; or [it stayed] by day and by night, and when the cloud lifted, they set out. 22 Whether two days, or a month, or [many] days, while the cloud lingered over the dwelling, resting on it, the children of Israel would camp and not set out; and when it lifted, they would set out. 23 At the word of Shema they camped, and at the word of Shema they set out. They kept the watch of Shema at the word of Shema through Moses.
1 And Shema spoke with Moses, saying, 2 "Make for yourself two trumpets of silver; you shall make them of hammered work, and they shall serve you for summoning the assembly and for moving the camps. 3 And they shall blow on them, and the whole assembly shall gather to you at the door of the tent of meeting. 4 And if they blow with one, the princes, the heads of the thousands of Israel, shall gather to you. 5 And you shall blow a blast, and the camps that are camped eastward shall set out. 6 And you shall blow a blast a second time, and the camps that are camped northward shall set out; they shall blow a blast for their journeys. 7 And when you gather the congregation, you shall blow, but you shall not sound the alarm. 8 And the sons of Aaron, the priests, shall blow the trumpets, and this shall be a decree for you forever, throughout your generations. 9 And when you go into battle in your land against the oppressor who oppresses you, you shall sound the trumpets, and you will be remembered before Shema your God and be rescued from your enemies. 10 And on the day of your rejoicing, and at your appointed times, and at the beginnings of your months, you shall blow the trumpets over your burnt offerings and over your peace-offering sacrifices, and they shall be a remembrance for you before Shema your God. I am Shema your God." And Shema spoke with Moses, saying, "You have lived long enough at this mountain. Turn and set out, and go up to the mountain of the Amorites and to all their encampments, in the valley, in the mountain and in the lowland, in the south and on the seashore, the land of the Canaanite, and Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates. See, I have set the land before you; go up and take possession of the land that I swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob, to give to their descendants after them." 11 And in the second year, in the second month, on the twentieth of the month, the cloud lifted from over the tabernacle of the testimony. 12 And the children of Israel set out on their journeys from the wilderness of Sinai, and the cloud came to rest in the wilderness of Paran. 13 And they set out first at the word of Shema, by the hand of Moses. 14 And the division of the camp of the children of Judah set out first by their hosts, and with its host was Nahshon son of Amminadab. 15 And with the host of the tribe of the children of Issachar was Nethanel son of Zuar. 16 And with the host of the tribe of the children of Zebulun was Eliab son of Helon. 17 And the tabernacle was taken down, and the sons of Gershon and the sons of Merari, who carried the tabernacle, set out. 18 And the division of the camp of the children of Reuben set out by their hosts, and with its host was Elizur son of Shedeur. 19 And with the host of the tribe of the children of Simeon was Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai. 20 And with the host of the tribe of the children of Gad was Eliasaph son of Deuel. 21 And the Kohathites, who carried the sanctuary, set out, and [the others] set up the tabernacle before they arrived. 22 And the division of the camp of the children of Ephraim set out by their hosts, and with its host was Elishama son of Ammihud. 23 And with the host of the tribe of the children of Manasseh was Gamaliel son of Pedahzur. 24 And with the host of the tribe of Benjamin was Abidan son of Gideoni. 25 And the division of the camp of the children of Dan, which gathered up [the rear] of all the camps, set out by their hosts, and with its host was Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai. 26 And with the host of the tribe of the children of Asher was Pagiel son of Ochran. 27 And with the host of the tribe of the children of Naphtali was Ahira son of Enan. 28 These are the journeys of the children of Israel by their hosts, and they set out. 29 And Moses said to Hobab son of Reuel the Midianite, Moses' father-in-law, "We are setting out for the place of which Shema said, 'I will give it to you.' Come with us and we will treat you well, for Shema has promised good things for Israel." 30 And he said to him, "I will not go; I will go instead to my own land and to my kindred." 31 And he said, "Please do not leave us, for you know our camping places in the wilderness, and you will be there for us in our needs. 32 And when you go with us, the good that Shema does for us, we will do for you as well." 33 And they set out from the mountain of Shema, a three days' journey, and the ark of the covenant of Shema set out before them, a three days' journey, to search out a camping place for them. 34 And the cloud of Shema was over them by day when they set out from the camp. 35 And when the ark set out, Moses would say, "Arise, Shema, and let your enemies be scattered, and let those who hate you flee before you." 36 And when it came to rest he would say, "Return, Shema, to the myriads of the thousands of Israel."
1 And the people were like complainers, [speaking] evil in the hearing of Shema, and Shema heard, and his anger grew strong, and the fire of Shema blazed among them and consumed the edge of the camp. 2 And the people cried out to Moses, and Moses prayed to Shema, and the fire died down. 3 And he called the name of that place Taberah, because the fire of Shema had blazed among them. 4 And the rabble among them gave way to craving, and they sat and wept, the children of Israel too, and said, "If only someone would feed us meat! 5 We remember the fish that we ate in Egypt for free, the cucumbers and the melons, the leeks, the onions and the garlic. 6 And now our soul is dried up; there is nothing at all, only this manna to look at." 7 And the manna was like husked seed, and its appearance was like the appearance of bdellium. 8 The people roamed about and gathered it, and ground it in mills, and pounded it in a mortar, and cooked it in a pot, and made it into round cakes, and its taste was like the taste of rich oil. 9 And when the dew came down on the camp at night, the manna came down on it. 10 And Moses heard the people weeping by their families, each man at the door of his tent, and the anger of Shema grew very strong, and in the eyes of Moses it was evil. 11 And Moses said to Shema, "Why have you done harm to your servant, and why have I not found mercy in your eyes, that you lay the burden of all this people on me? 12 Did I conceive all this people? Did I give birth to it, that you say to me, 'Carry it in your bosom, as a nurse carries a nursing child,' to the land that you swore to their fathers? 13 Where am I to get meat to give to all this people? For they weep against me, saying, 'Give us meat, so we can eat.' 14 I cannot carry all this people by myself, for it is too heavy for me. 15 And if you are going to treat me like this, kill me outright, please, and if I have found mercy in your eyes, let me not look on my misery." 16 And Shema said to Moses, "Gather for me seventy men from the elders of Israel, whom you know to be the elders of the people and its scribes, and bring them to the tent of meeting, and they shall take their stand there with you. 17 And I will set aside some of the spirit that is on you and put it on them, and they will carry the burden of the people with you, and you will not carry it by yourself. 18 And to the people say, 'Make yourselves holy for tomorrow, and you will eat meat, for you have wept in the hearing of Shema, saying, "Who will feed us meat? For we were well off in Egypt." And Shema will give you meat, and you will eat. 19 You will eat not one day, nor two days, nor five days, nor ten days, nor twenty days, 20 but a full month, until it comes out of your nostrils and becomes loathsome to you, because you have distressed Shema who is among you and wept before him, saying, "Why is it that we came out of Egypt?"'" 21 And Moses said, "The people I am among are six hundred thousand men on foot, and you have said, 'I will give them meat, and they will eat for a full month.' 22 Shall flocks and cattle be slaughtered for them, to satisfy them? Or shall all the fish of the sea be gathered for them, to satisfy them?" 23 And Shema said to Moses, "Is the hand of Shema short? Now you will see whether my word comes true for you or not." 24 And Moses went out and told the people the words of Shema, and he gathered seventy men from the elders of the people and set them around the tabernacle. 25 And Shema came in the cloud and spoke with him, and set aside some of the spirit that was on him and gave it to the seventy men, the elders; and when the spirit rested on them, they prophesied, and did not gather. 26 And two men remained in the camp; the name of one was Eldad and the name of the second was Medad; and the spirit rested on them, and they were among those registered, but had not gone out to the tabernacle, and they prophesied in the camp. 27 And a young man ran and told Moses, and said, "Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp." 28 And Joshua son of Nun, Moses' attendant, one of his chosen men, answered and said, "My master Moses, stop them." 29 And Moses said to him, "Are you jealous on my account? If only it were granted that all the people of Shema were prophets, with Shema putting some of his spirit on them!" 30 And Moses withdrew to the camp, he and the elders of Israel. 31 And a wind set out from Shema and drove quails in from the sea and dropped them over the camp, about a day['s journey] on this side and about a day['s journey] on that side, all around the camp, and about two cubits deep on the face of the ground. 32 All that day, all the night and all the next day the people rose and gathered the quails; whoever gathered least gathered ten kors; and they slaughtered them for themselves all around the camp. 33 The meat was still between their teeth, before it was cut off, when the anger of Shema grew strong against the people, and Shema struck the people with a very great slaughter. 34 And he called the name of that place Qibre-tahmadta, because there they buried the people who had craved. 35 From Qibre-tahmadta the people set out to Hazeroth, and they stayed at Hazeroth.
1 Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses on account of the beautiful woman he had taken, for he had taken a beautiful woman. 2 They said, "Has Shema spoken only with Moses? Has he not spoken with us too?" And Shema heard. 3 Now the man [Moses] was very humble, more than all the people on the face of the earth. 4 Suddenly Shema said to Moses, Aaron and Miriam, "Go out, the three of you, to the tent of meeting." And the three of them went out. 5 Shema came down in a pillar of cloud and stood at the gate of the dwelling. He called Aaron and Miriam, and the two of them went out. 6 He said, "Hear my words, please. If there is a prophet of Shema among you, I make myself known to him in a vision and speak with him in a dream. 7 Not so my servant Moses: he is trusted in all the house. 8 Mouth to mouth I speak with him, in plain sight and not in riddles, and he looks on the likeness of Shema. Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant, against Moses?" 9 The anger of Shema grew strong against them, and he went away. 10 The cloud turned away from over the dwelling, and there was Miriam, leprous like snow. Aaron looked at Miriam, and there she was, leprous. 11 Aaron said to Moses, "Please, my master, do not lay on us the guilt of what we did foolishly and sinned. 12 Do not let her be like one killed, who comes out of his mother's womb with half his flesh eaten away." 13 Moses cried out to Shema, saying, "O Mighty One, Merciful One, heal her, I beg you." 14 Shema said to Moses, "If her father had spat in her face, would she not be ashamed for seven days? Let her be shut out of the camp for seven days, and afterward she may be gathered in." 15 Miriam was shut out of the camp for seven days, and the people did not set out until Miriam was gathered in. 16 After that the people set out from Hazeroth and camped in the wilderness of Paran. And Moses said to the children of Israel, "You have come as far as the mountain of the Amorite, which Shema our God is giving us. See, Shema your God has set the land before you. Go up and take possession, as Shema the God of your fathers told you. Do not fear and do not lose heart." They came up to Moses and said, "Let us send men ahead of us to search out the land for us and bring us back word about the road by which we should go up and the cities we will enter." And the proposal pleased Moses.
1 Shema spoke with Moses, saying, 2 "Send men for yourself to spy out the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the children of Israel. Send one man for each of their ancestral tribes, every one a leader among them." 3 So Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran at the word of Shema, all of them men who were heads of the children of Israel. 4 These were their names: from the tribe of Reuben, Shamua son of Zakkur; 5 from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat son of Hori; 6 from the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh; 7 from the tribe of Issachar, Igal son of Joseph; 8 from the tribe of Ephraim, Joshua son of Nun; 9 from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti son of Raphu; 10 from the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel son of Sodi; 11 from the tribe of Joseph, [that is,] from the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi son of Susi; 12 from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel son of Gemalli; 13 from the tribe of Asher, Sethur son of Michael; 14 from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi son of Vophsi; 15 from the tribe of Gad, Geuel son of Michi. 16 These are the names of the men Moses sent to spy out the land. And Moses called Joshua son of Nun "Joshua." 17 He sent them to spy out the land of Canaan and said to them, "Go up this way through the south, and go up into the mountain. 18 See what the land is like, and whether the people who live in it are strong or weak, whether they are few or a large people, 19 and what the land they live in is like, whether it is good or bad, and what the cities they live in are like, whether they are open or lofty, 20 and what the land is like, whether it is rich or poor, whether there are trees in it or not. Be strong, and take some of the fruit of the land." It was the season of the first-ripe grapes. 21 So they went off and spied out the land from the wilderness of Zin as far as Pethai, at the entrance to Hamath. 22 They went up through the south and came to Hebron, where Ahiman, Sheshai and Talmai, the offspring of Anak, were. Hebron was built seven years before the building of Tanis in Egypt. 23 They came to the Valley of Eshcol and cut from there a branch with a single cluster of grapes, and carried it on a pole between two [of them], along with some of the pomegranates and some of the figs. 24 They called that place the Valley of Eshcol because of the cluster the children of Israel cut from there. 25 They came back from spying out the land at the end of forty days. 26 They went off and came to Moses, to Aaron and to the whole congregation of the children of Israel, at the wilderness of Paran, at Kadesh. They brought back word to them and to the whole congregation and showed them the fruit of the land. 27 They told him, "We came to the land you sent us to, and it does flow with milk and honey, and this is its fruit. 28 But the people who live in the land are mighty, and the cities are lofty and very large, and we also saw the offspring of Anak there. 29 Amalek lives in the land of the south; the Hittite, the Hivite, the Jebusite and the Amorite live in the mountain; and the Canaanite lives by the sea and along the Jordan." 30 Caleb silenced the people before Moses and said to him, "Let us go out at once and take possession of it, for we can certainly overcome it." 31 But the men who had gone up with him said, "We cannot go up against the people, for they are stronger than we are." 32 They spread a bad report among the children of Israel about the land they had spied out, saying, "The land we passed through to spy it out is a land that devours its inhabitants, and all the people we saw in it are men of great size. 33 There we saw the giants, the sons of Anak, who come from the giants, and in our own eyes we were like grasshoppers, and so we were in theirs." Then in their tents the children of Israel murmured and said, "It is because Shema hates us that he has brought us out of the land of Egypt, to hand us over to the Amorite to wipe us out. Where are we going up? Our brothers have made our hearts sink, saying, 'The people are larger and more numerous than we are, the cities are large and lofty up to the heights, and we also saw the sons of the Anakites there.'" Moses then said to the children of Israel, "Do not be terrified or afraid of them. Shema your God, who goes before you, will himself act for you, as he did for you before your eyes in Egypt and in the wilderness, where you saw how Shema your God carried you, the way a man carries his son, all along the way you traveled until you came to this place. Yet in this matter you do not trust in Shema your God, who goes before you on the way to search out a place for you to camp, in fire by night to show you the way you should go, and in the cloud by day."
1 And the whole congregation lifted [itself] up and let out their voice, and the people wept that night. 2 Against Moses and against Aaron all the children of Israel murmured, and the whole congregation said to them: “If only we had died in the land of Egypt, or in this wilderness, if only we had died! 3 Why is Shema bringing us into this land, to fall by the sword? Our wives and our little ones will become plunder. Is it not good for us to return to Egypt?” 4 And they said each to his brother: “Let us appoint a head and return to Egypt.” 5 And Moses and Aaron fell on their faces before the whole assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel. 6 And Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh, from among the scouts of the land, tore their garments, 7 and they spoke to the whole congregation of the children of Israel, saying: “The land that we passed through to explore it is good; the land is very, very [good]. 8 If Shema is pleased with us, he will bring us into this land and give it to us, a land that flows with milk and honey. 9 Only do not rebel against Shema, and as for you, do not fear the people of the land, for they are our bread. Their shade has passed away from over them, and Shema is with us; do not fear [them].” 10 And the whole congregation spoke of stoning them with stones. Then in the tent of meeting the glory of Shema appeared to all the children of Israel. 11 And Shema said to Moses: “How long will this people scorn me? And how long will they not believe in me, despite all the signs that I have done among them? 12 I will wipe them out with death and destroy them, and I will make you and your father’s house into a nation great and stronger than they.” 13 And Moses said to Shema: “Then the Egyptians will hear, for by your might you brought this people up from among them, 14 and they will tell the inhabitant of this land. They will hear that you, Shema, are in the midst of this people, who have seen with [their own] sight that you, Shema, are seen, and your cloud stands over them, and by day you go before them in a pillar of cloud, and by night in a pillar of fire. 15 And [if] you kill this people as one man, the nations that have heard your fame will speak, saying, 16 ‘Because Shema was not able to bring this people into the land that he swore to them, he slaughtered them in the wilderness.’ 17 And now, I pray, let the might of my lord be great, as you have spoken, saying, 18 ‘Shema is slow to anger and great in kindness and truth, bearing iniquity and transgression and sin, and the innocent he will acquit, laying the iniquity of fathers on sons, and on the third and on the fourth [generation].’ 19 Forgive, I pray, the iniquity of this people according to the greatness of your kindness, and as you have borne with this people from Egypt until here.” 20 And Shema said: “I have forgiven according to your words. 21 But truly, I am living, and the glory of Shema will fill all the earth, 22 for all the men who have seen my glory and my signs that were done in Egypt and in the wilderness, and have tested me these ten times and have not listened to my voice, 23 will not see the land that I swore to their fathers to give them, and none of those who scorn me will see it. 24 But my servant Caleb, because there was another spirit with him and he followed me fully, I will bring him into the land where he went, and his descendants will inherit it. 25 And the Amalekite and the Canaanite dwell in the valley. Tomorrow turn and set out into the wilderness by the way of the Sea of Suf.” 26 And Shema spoke with Moses and with Aaron, saying: 27 “Until when [shall I bear] with this evil congregation, who are murmuring against me? I have heard the murmurings of the children of Israel, which they are murmuring against me. 28 Say to them: ‘I am living,’ says Shema, ‘just as you have spoken in my hearing, so I will surely do to you. 29 In this wilderness your corpses will fall, and all your counted ones, by all your number, from twenty years old and upward, who murmured against me, 30 you will not enter the land over which I lifted [my hand], my own place, to settle you in it, except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun. 31 And your little ones, who you said would become plunder, I will bring them in, and they will know the land that you loathed. 32 But as for you, your corpses will fall in this wilderness. 33 And your sons will be shepherding in the wilderness forty years, and they will bear your unfaithfulness until your corpses are finished in the wilderness. 34 By the number of the days in which you explored the land, forty days, a day for a year, a day for a year, you will bear your iniquities forty years, and you will know my repayment. 35 I, Shema, have spoken: surely this I will do to all this evil congregation who band together against me; in this wilderness they will come to an end, and there they will die.’” 36 And the men whom Moses sent to explore the land, who returned and made the whole congregation murmur against him by putting out slander about the land, 37 those men who put out an evil slander about the land, died by the plague before Shema. 38 And Joshua son of Nun and Caleb son of Jephunneh were kept alive out of those men who went to explore the land. 39 And Moses spoke these words with all the children of Israel, and the people mourned greatly. 40 And they rose early in the morning and went up to the top of the mountain, saying: “Here we are, going up to the place that Shema spoke of, for we have sinned.” And Shema said to Moses: “Say to them: ‘Do not go up and do not wage war, for I am not among you, so that you are not broken before your enemies.’” 41 And Moses said: “Why now are you transgressing the word of Shema? It will not succeed. 42 Do not go up, for Shema is not among you, so that you are not broken before your enemies. 43 For the Amalekite and the Canaanite are there before you, and you will fall by the sword, because for this reason you have turned back from following Shema, and Shema will not be with you.” 44 And they presumed to go up to the top of the mountain, but the ark of the covenant of Shema and Moses did not move from within the camp. 45 And the Amalekite and the Canaanite who dwelt on that mountain came down to meet them and pursued them as bees do, and struck them and crushed them as far as Hormah, and they returned to the camp.
1 And Shema spoke with Moses, saying: 2 “Speak with the sons of Israel and say to them, ‘When you enter the land of your dwellings that I am giving you, 3 and you bring an offering to Shema, a burnt offering or a sacrifice, to set apart a vow or as a freewill offering, or at your appointed times, to make a pleasing fragrance for Shema from the cattle or from the flock, 4 then the one who brings his offering near shall bring near to Shema a meal offering of a tenth [measure] of fine flour mixed with a quarter of a hin of oil, 5 and wine for pouring, a quarter of a hin, you shall prepare with the burnt offering or for the sacrifice, for each lamb. 6 Or for a ram you shall prepare a meal offering of two tenths of fine flour mixed with a third of a hin of oil, 7 and wine for pouring, a third of a hin, you shall bring near as a pleasing fragrance for Shema. 8 And when you prepare a young bull as a burnt offering or a sacrifice to set apart a vow, or as peace offerings to Shema, 9 he shall bring near with the young bull a meal offering of three tenths of fine flour mixed with half a hin of oil, 10 and you shall bring near wine for pouring, half a hin, an offering of pleasing fragrance for Shema. 11 So it shall be done for each bull, or for each ram, or for a young one among the lambs or among the goats. 12 According to the number you prepare, so you shall do for each one, according to their number. 13 Every native shall do these things in this way, in bringing near an offering of pleasing fragrance for Shema. 14 And if a convert stays with you, or whoever is among you through your generations, and he prepares an offering of pleasing fragrance for Shema, he shall do just as you do. 15 Assembly! There is one statute for you and for the sojourner who sojourns [with you], a statute forever through your generations: as you are, so the convert shall be before Shema. 16 One law and one judgment shall there be for you and for the sojourner who sojourns with you.’” 17 And Shema spoke with Moses, saying: 18 “Speak with the sons of Israel and say to them, ‘When you enter the land where I am bringing you, 19 then when you eat from the bread of the land, you shall lift up a contribution to Shema. 20 From the first of your dough you shall lift up a cake as a contribution; like the contribution of the threshing floor, so you shall lift it up. 21 From the first of your dough you shall give a contribution to Shema through your generations. 22 And if you go astray and do not do all these commandments that Shema spoke with Moses, 23 all that Shema has commanded you through Moses, from the day Shema gave command and onward through your generations, 24 then if it was done in error, out of the sight of the congregation, all the congregation shall prepare one young bull as a burnt offering, for a pleasing fragrance for Shema, with its meal offering and its drink offering according to the ordinance, and one male goat as a sin offering. 25 The priest shall atone for all the congregation of the sons of Israel, and they shall be forgiven, since it was an error; they have brought their offering, an offering to Shema, and before Shema they shall be forgiven for their error. 26 And all the congregation of the sons of Israel shall be forgiven, and the sojourner who sojourns among them, for all the people [acted] in error. 27 And if one soul sins in error, it shall bring near a she-goat a year old as a sin offering. 28 And the priest shall atone before Shema for the soul that erred when it sinned in error, to atone for it, and it shall be forgiven. 29 For the native among the sons of Israel and for the sojourner who sojourns among them, one law shall there be for you, for the one who acts in error. 30 But the soul that acts with a high hand, whether native or convert, reviles Shema, and that soul shall be uprooted from among its people. 31 For it despised the word of Shema and made his commandments void; that soul shall surely be uprooted; its guilt is upon it.’” 32 And the sons of Israel were in the wilderness, and they found a man gathering wood on the Sabbath day. 33 And those who found him gathering wood brought him to Moses and to Aaron and to all the congregation. 34 And they put him in custody, for it had not been made clear what should be done to him. 35 And Shema said to Moses: “The man shall surely be killed. All the congregation, stone him with stones outside the camp.” 36 And all the congregation brought him outside the camp and stoned him with stones, and he was killed, as Shema commanded Moses. 37 And Shema said to Moses: 38 “Speak with the sons of Israel and tell them to make tassels for themselves on the corners of their garments through their generations, and to put a cord of blue on the tassel of each corner. 39 And they shall be tassels for you, and you shall see them and remember all the commandments of Shema and do them, and you shall not wander after your hearts and after your eyes, which you go whoring after, 40 so that you remember and do all my commandments and are holy to your God. 41 I am Shema your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt to be God to you. I am Shema your God.”
1 Now Korah son of Izhar son of Kohath son of Levi took [men], and Dathan and Abiram the sons of Eliab, and On son of Peleth son of Reuben, 2 and they rose up before Moses, with men of the sons of Israel, two hundred and fifty chiefs of the congregation, summoned at the appointed time, men of renown. 3 And they gathered against Moses and against Aaron and said to them: “Enough of you! For all the congregation, every one of them, is holy, and Shema is among them. Why then do you raise yourselves over the assembly of Shema?” 4 And Moses heard, and fell on his face. 5 And he spoke with Korah and with all his company, saying: “In the morning Shema will make known who is his and who is holy, and he will bring [him] near to himself; the one he chooses he will bring near to himself. 6 Do this: take censers for yourselves, Korah and all his company, 7 and put fire in them and set incense on them before Shema tomorrow, and the man whom Shema chooses, he is the holy one. Enough of you, sons of Levi!” 8 And Moses said to Korah: “Listen, please, sons of Levi. 9 Is it too little for you that the God of Israel has set you apart from the congregation of Israel, to bring you near to himself, to perform the service of the tabernacle of Shema, to stand before the congregation to minister to them? 10 He has brought you near, and all your brothers the sons of Levi with you, and you seek the priesthood as well? 11 Therefore you and all your company are gathered against Shema. And Aaron, what is he, that you murmur against him?” 12 And Moses sent to summon Dathan and Abiram the sons of Eliab, and they said: “We will not go up. 13 Is it too little that you brought us up from a land flowing with milk and honey to kill us in the wilderness, that you have also made yourself great over us, great indeed? 14 What is more, you have not brought us into a land flowing with milk and honey, nor given us a share of field and vineyard. Will you gouge out the eyes of these men? We will not go up.” 15 And Moses was very angry, and he said to Shema: “Do not look upon their offering. I have not coveted a single thing of theirs, nor carried [it] off, and I have not harmed a single one of them.” 16 And Moses said to Korah: “You and all your company, be before Shema, you and they and Aaron, tomorrow. 17 And take each man his censer, and put incense on them, and bring them near before Shema, each man his censer, two hundred and fifty censers; you and Aaron too, each man his censer.” 18 And they took each man his censer and put fire in them and set incense on them, and stood at the entrance of the tent of meeting, with Moses and Aaron. 19 And Korah gathered the whole congregation at the entrance of the tent of meeting against them, and the glory of Shema appeared to the whole congregation. 20 And Shema spoke with Moses and with Aaron, saying: 21 “Separate yourselves from among this congregation, and I will put an end to them in an instant.” 22 And they fell on their faces and said: “O Mighty One, God of the spirits of all flesh, shall one man sin, and will you rage against all the congregation?” 23 And Shema spoke with Moses, saying: 24 “Speak with the congregation, saying, ‘Withdraw from around the dwelling of Korah, Dathan and Abiram.’” 25 And Moses rose and went to Dathan and Abiram, and the elders of Israel went after him. 26 And he spoke with the congregation, saying: “Turn away, please, from beside the dwellings of these wicked men, and do not touch anything of theirs, lest you be swept away in all their sins.” 27 And they withdrew from around the dwelling of Korah, Dathan and Abiram; and Dathan and Abiram came out and stood at the entrance of their dwellings, with their wives and their sons and their little ones. 28 And Moses said: “By this you shall know that Shema has sent me to do all these works, for [they are] not from my own heart. 29 If they die as all people die, and the lot of all people is dealt out to them, Shema has not sent me. 30 But if Shema creates a new thing, and the earth opens its mouth and swallows them and all that is theirs, and they go down alive to Sheol, then you shall know that these men have spurned Shema.” 31 And as he finished speaking all these words, the ground beneath them split open. 32 And the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, and their households, and all the people who belonged to Korah, and all the wealth. 33 And they and all that was theirs went down alive to Sheol, and the earth covered them over, and they perished from among the assembly. 34 And all Israel who were around them fled at their cry, for they said: “Lest the earth swallow us!” 35 And fire came out from before Shema and devoured the two hundred and fifty men who were offering the incense.
1 Shema spoke with Moses, saying, 2 "Tell Eleazar son of Aaron the priest to lift the censers out from among the burned men, and to scatter the fire away outside, for they are holy. 3 The censers of these men who sinned at the cost of their lives: make them into beaten sheets, plates as a covering for the altar, for they offered them before Shema and they became holy; and they will be a sign to the children of Israel." 4 So Eleazar son of Aaron the priest took the bronze censers that the burned men had offered, and they beat them out as a covering for the altar, 5 a reminder to the children of Israel, so that no outsider who is not of Aaron's offspring would approach to burn incense before Shema and become like Korah and like his congregation, as Shema had spoken to him through Moses. 6 On the next day the whole congregation of the children of Israel murmured against Moses and Aaron, saying, "You have killed the people of Shema." 7 When the congregation gathered against Moses and against Aaron, they looked toward the tent of meeting, and there the cloud covered it, and the glory of Shema appeared. 8 Moses and Aaron came to the front of the tent of meeting, 9 and Shema spoke with Moses, saying, 10 "Lift yourselves out from among this congregation, and I will finish them off in an instant." And they fell on their faces. 11 Moses said to Aaron, "Take the censer, put fire in it from on the altar, place incense on it, and go quickly to the congregation and make atonement for them, for anger has gone out from before Shema; the plague has begun." 12 Aaron took [it] as Moses had said and ran into the middle of the assembly, and there the plague had begun among the people. He put on the incense and made atonement for the people. 13 He stood between the dead and the living, and the plague was held back. 14 Those who died in the plague were fourteen thousand seven hundred, besides those who died over the affair of Korah. 15 Aaron returned to Moses at the entrance of the tent of meeting, and the plague was held back. 16 Shema spoke with Moses, saying, 17 "Speak with the children of Israel and take from them a rod, one rod for each father's house, from all their leaders by their fathers' houses, twelve rods. Write each man's name on his rod, 18 and write Aaron's name on the rod of Levi, for there is one rod for the head of their fathers' house. 19 Set them in the tent of meeting before the testimony, where I meet you. 20 The man I choose, his rod will blossom; and I will put a stop to the complaints of the children of Israel against me, which they keep making against you." 21 Moses spoke with the children of Israel, and all their leaders gave him a rod for each leader, a rod for each leader, by their fathers' houses, twelve rods; and Aaron's rod was among their rods. 22 Moses laid the rods before Shema in the tabernacle of the testimony. 23 The next day Moses went into the tabernacle of the testimony, and there Aaron's rod for the house of Levi had blossomed: it had put out blossom, opened buds, and ripened almonds. 24 Moses brought all the rods out from before Shema to all the children of Israel; they looked, and each man took his rod. 25 Shema said to Moses, "Return Aaron's rod to its place before the testimony, to be kept as a sign for the rebellious, and I will cut off their complaints against me, and they will not die." 26 Moses did as Shema had commanded him; so he did. 27 The children of Israel said to Moses, "Look, we are finished, we are lost, we are all lost. 28 Everyone who comes near, who approaches the tabernacle of Shema, will be killed. Are we to be finished off completely?"
1 Shema said to Aaron, "You and your sons and your father's house with you will bear the guilt of the sanctuary, and you and your sons with you will bear the guilt of your priesthood. 2 Your brothers too, the tribe of Levi, your father's tribe, bring near with you, so that they may be attached to you and serve you; and you and your sons with you [will be] before the tabernacle of the testimony. 3 They will keep your charge and the charge of the whole tabernacle, only they will not come near the vessels of the sanctuary or the altar, so that they do not die, both they and you. 4 They will be attached to you and keep the charge of the tent of meeting, for all the service of the tabernacle, and no outsider will come near you. 5 You will keep the charge of the sanctuary and the charge of the altar, and there will be no more wrath on the children of Israel. 6 And I, see, from among the children of Israel I have taken your brothers the Levites; given to Shema, they are a gift to you, to perform the service of the tent of meeting. 7 You and your sons with you will keep your priesthood in every matter of the altar and of what is inside the veil, and you will perform the service. I give your priesthood as a free gift, and the outsider who comes near will be killed." 8 Shema spoke with Aaron: "And I, see, I have given you charge of my contributions, of all the holy things of the children of Israel. I have given them to you as a mark of greatness, and to your sons as a share forever. 9 This will be yours from the most holy things, from the offering: every offering of theirs, every grain offering of theirs, every sin offering of theirs, and every guilt offering of theirs that they bring to me for guilt; it is most holy for you and for your sons. 10 You will eat it in the most holy [place]; every male will eat it; it will be holy to you. 11 This also is yours: the contribution from their gifts, of all the wave offerings of the children of Israel. To you I have given them, and to your sons and your daughters with you, as a share forever; everyone in your house who is clean will eat it. 12 All the best of the fresh [produce], all the choicest of the dry, and the grain, their first part that they give to Shema, I have given to you. 13 The first fruits of everything in their land, which they bring to Shema, will be yours; everyone in your house who is clean will eat it. 14 Everything devoted in Israel will be yours. 15 Everything that opens the womb, of all flesh that they bring to Shema, of people and of animals, will be yours; only you must redeem the firstborn of people, and you must redeem the firstborn of unclean animals. 16 Its redemption: from a month old you will redeem it, by your valuation, five shekels of silver by the shekel of the sanctuary, which is twenty gerahs. 17 But the firstborn of an ox, or the firstborn of a lamb, or the firstborn of a goat you will not redeem; they are holy. Sprinkle their blood on the altar and burn their fat as incense, an offering of pleasing aroma to Shema. 18 Their meat will be yours; like the breast of the wave offering and like the right thigh, it will be yours. 19 All the contributions of the holy things that the children of Israel raise to Shema I have given to you, and to your sons and your daughters with you, as a share forever. It is a covenant of salt forever before Shema, for you and for your offspring with you." 20 Shema said to Aaron, "You will take no possession in their land, and you will have no share among them. I am your share and your possession among the children of Israel. 21 To the sons of Levi, see, I have given every tithe in Israel as a possession, the wage for their service that they perform, the service of the tent of meeting. 22 The children of Israel will no longer come near the tent of meeting, to bear sin [and] be killed. 23 The Levite himself will perform the service of the tent of meeting, and they will bear their guilt. [It is] a decree forever for your generations: among the children of Israel they will not take possession of a possession. 24 For the tithe of the children of Israel, which they raise to Shema as a contribution, I have given to the Levites as a possession. Therefore I have told them, 'Among the children of Israel they will not take possession of a possession.'" 25 Shema spoke with Moses, saying, 26 "Speak with the Levites and tell them, 'When you take from the children of Israel the tithe that I have given you from them as your possession, raise from it Shema's contribution, a tithe of the tithe. 27 Your contribution will be counted to you like the grain from the threshing floor and like the full yield from the winepress. 28 So you too will raise Shema's contribution from all your tithes that you take from the children of Israel, and from it you will give Shema's contribution to Aaron the priest. 29 From all your gifts you will raise every contribution of Shema, from all its choicest part, from it. 30 And it will be counted to the Levites like the produce of the threshing floor and like the produce of the winepress. 31 You may eat it in any place, you and your households, for it is a wage for you, the wage for your service in the tent of meeting. 32 You will bear no sin because of it when you raise its choicest part from it; and you will not profane the holy things of the children of Israel, and you will not die.'"
1 Shema spoke with Moses and with Aaron, saying: 2 "This is the decree of the law that Shema commanded, saying: Speak with the children of Israel, and let them bring you a red heifer, whole, that has no blemish on her and on which no yoke has come up. 3 You shall hand her over to Eleazar the priest, and he shall take her outside the camp, and she shall be slaughtered in front of him. 4 Eleazar the priest shall take some of her blood on his finger and sprinkle some of her blood toward the front of the tent of meeting seven times. 5 The heifer shall be burned before his eyes; her hide and her flesh and her blood shall be burned along with her dung. 6 The priest shall take cedar wood and hyssop and scarlet and throw [them] into the middle of the fire burning the heifer. 7 The priest shall wash his garments and bathe his body in water, and after that he may enter the camp; and the priest shall be unclean until evening. 8 The one who burns her shall wash his garments in water and bathe his body in water, and he shall be unclean until evening. 9 A clean man shall gather up the ashes of the heifer and set [them] down outside the camp in a clean place, and they shall be kept for the congregation of the children of Israel for the water of impurity; it is a purification. 10 The one who gathers the ashes of the heifer shall wash his garments and be unclean until evening. And it shall be for the children of Israel, and for the sojourner who lives among them, an everlasting decree. 11 Whoever touches a dead body, any human being, shall be unclean seven days. 12 He shall purify himself with it on the third day and on the seventh day, and he will be clean; but if he does not purify himself on the third day and on the seventh day, he will not be clean. 13 Anyone who touches a dead body, a human being who has died, and does not purify himself has defiled the dwelling of Shema, and that person shall be uprooted from Israel. Because the water of impurity was not sprinkled on him, he shall be unclean; his uncleanness is still in him. 14 And the law is this: when a man dies in a tent, all who come into the tent and all who are in the tent shall be unclean seven days. 15 And every open vessel that has no lid fastened on it is unclean. 16 And whoever out in the open field touches one slain by the sword, or a dead body, or a human bone, or a grave, shall be unclean seven days. 17 For the unclean person they shall take some of the dust of the burnt purification and put living water over it in a vessel. 18 A clean man shall take hyssop, dip [it] in the water, and sprinkle the tent with it, along with the vessels and the persons who were there, and also whoever touched the bone, the slain, the dead or the grave. 19 On the third day and on the seventh day the clean [man] shall sprinkle the unclean, and on the seventh day he shall purify him; he shall then wash his garments and bathe in water, and in the evening he will be clean. 20 But the man who becomes unclean and does not purify himself, that person shall be uprooted from the midst of the assembly, because he has defiled the sanctuary of Shema; the water of impurity has not been sprinkled on him; he is unclean. 21 It shall be an everlasting decree for you. The one who sprinkles the water of impurity shall wash his garments, and the one who touches the water of impurity shall be unclean until evening. 22 Anything the unclean person touches shall be unclean, and the person who touches [it] shall be unclean until evening."
1 The children of Israel, the whole congregation, entered the wilderness of Zin in the first month, and the people settled in Kadesh. Miriam died there and was buried there. 2 There was no water for the congregation, and they gathered against Moses and against Aaron. 3 The people quarreled with Moses and said, "If only we had perished when our brothers perished before Shema! 4 Why have you brought the assembly of Shema into this wilderness for us to die there, we and our livestock? 5 Why did you bring us up from Egypt to bring us to this bad place? It is no place of seed or fig or vine or pomegranate, and there is no water to drink." 6 Moses and Aaron left the assembly and went in to the entrance of the tent of meeting, where they fell on their faces; then the glory of Shema appeared to them. 7 Shema spoke with Moses, saying: 8 "Take the staff and gather the congregation, you and Aaron your brother, and speak with the rock before their eyes, and it will give its water. You shall bring water out of the rock for them and give the congregation and their livestock drink." 9 Moses took the staff from before Shema, as he had commanded him. 10 Moses and Aaron gathered the assembly together in front of the rock, and he said to them, "Listen now, you rebels! Is it out of this rock that water will come for you?" 11 Moses raised his hand and struck the rock with his staff twice, and plenty of water came out, and the congregation and their livestock drank. 12 Shema said to Moses and to Aaron, "Because you did not trust in me so as to sanctify me in the eyes of the children of Israel, for that reason you shall not bring this assembly into the land that I have given them." 13 These are the waters of strife, where the children of Israel quarreled with Shema, and he was sanctified through them. And Moses said, "My Lord Shema, you have begun to show your servant your greatness and your mighty hand. For what god is there in the heavens or on the earth who can act like your works and like your mighty deeds? Let me cross over, please, and see the good land that lies across the Jordan, this good mountain, and the Lebanon." And Shema said to Moses, "Enough for you! Speak no more to me of this matter. Go up to the top of Sekhita and raise your eyes westward and northward and southward and eastward, and see with your eyes, for you shall not cross this Jordan. Command Joshua son of Nun, and strengthen him and make him firm, for he shall cross over at the head of this people, and he shall give them possession of the land that you will see." And Shema spoke with Moses, saying, "You have circled this mountain long enough. Turn northward. And command the people, saying, 'You are about to cross the border of your brothers the children of Esau, who live in Gebala, and they will be afraid of you. So keep close watch over yourselves. Do not provoke them, for I will not give you any of their land, not so much as a footstep, because I have given Mount Gebala to Esau as an inheritance. Food you shall buy from them with silver and eat, and water too you shall buy from them with silver and drink.'" 14 Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom: "Thus says your brother Israel: You know all the hardship that has come upon us. 15 Our fathers went down to Egypt, and we lived in Egypt many days, and the Egyptians treated us and our fathers badly. 16 We cried out to Shema, and he heard our voice and sent a messenger and brought us out of Egypt. And here we are in Kadesh, a town at the edge of your border. 17 Let us cross through your land, please. We will not cross through field or vineyard, and we will not drink water from a cistern. We will go by the main road; we will not turn to the right or the left until we have crossed your border." 18 Edom said to him, "You shall not cross through me, or I will come out against you with the sword." 19 The children of Israel said to him, "By the highway we will go up, and if we drink any of your water, I and my livestock, I will pay its price. Only, it is nothing at all: let me cross on my feet." 20 He said, "You shall not cross." And Edom came out against him with a great host and a strong hand. 21 So Edom refused to let Israel cross through his border, and Israel went away from him. 22 They set out from Kadesh, and the children of Israel, the whole congregation, came to Mount Tura. 23 Shema said to Moses and to Aaron on Mount Tura, at the border of the land of Edom: 24 "Aaron shall be gathered to his people, for he shall not enter the land that I have given to the children of Israel, because you defied my word at the waters of strife. 25 Take Aaron and Eleazar his son and bring them up Mount Tura, 26 and strip Aaron of his garments and dress Eleazar his son in them; and Aaron shall be gathered and shall die there." 27 Moses did as Shema had commanded, and he brought him up Mount Tura in the sight of the whole congregation. 28 Moses stripped Aaron of his garments and dressed Eleazar his son in them, and Aaron died there on the top of the mountain, and Moses and Eleazar came down from the mountain. 29 The whole congregation saw that Aaron had perished, and all the house of Israel wept for Aaron thirty [days].
1 The Canaanite, the king of Arad, who lived in the south, heard that Israel had come by the way of the scouts, and he fought against Israel and took some of them captive. 2 Israel made a vow to Shema and said, "If you will indeed give this people into my hand, I will devote their cities to destruction." 3 Shema heard the voice of Israel and gave the Canaanite into his hand, and he devoted them and their cities to destruction, and he called the name of the place Hormah. 4 They set out from Mount Tura by the way of the Sea of Suf, to go around the land of Edom, and the people grew impatient on the way. 5 The people spoke against God and against Moses: "Why did you bring us out of Egypt to die in the wilderness? There is no bread and no water, and we are sick of this miserable bread." 6 Shema sent the burning serpents among the people, and they bit [some] of the people, and many people of Israel died. 7 The people came to Moses and said, "We have sinned in speaking against Shema and against you. Pray to Shema to take the serpent away from us." And Moses prayed for the people. 8 Shema said to Moses, "Make yourself a burning [serpent] and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten will look at it and live." 9 Moses made a serpent of bronze and set it on the pole, and if a serpent had bitten a man, he would look at the bronze serpent and live. 10 The children of Israel set out and camped at Oboth. 11 They set out from Oboth and camped at Kafrane-abraye, in the wilderness that faces Moab, toward the rising of the sun. And Shema said to Moses, "Do not harass Moab and do not draw up [for battle] against them, for I will not give you any of his land as a possession, because I have given Arsha to the children of Lot as a possession." 12 From there they set out and camped in the valley of Zered. And Shema spoke with Moses, saying, "Today you are crossing the border of Moab, Arsha, and you will come near, facing the children of Ammon. Do not harass them and do not draw up [for battle] against them, for I will not give you any of the land of the children of Ammon as a possession, because I have given it to the children of Lot as a possession." 13 They set out from the valley of Zered and camped beyond the Arnon, which is in the wilderness that extends from the border of the Amorite, for the Arnon is the border of Moab, between Moab and the Amorite. 14 Therefore it is said in the book of the wars of Shema: "With thunder in the storm, and with the gorges of the Arnon, 15 which he gave them as an inheritance, and which rises toward the settled city and slopes toward the border of Moab." 16 And from there [they went] to the well; that is the well of which Shema said to Moses, "Gather the people to me, and I will give them water." 17 At that time Israel sang this song: "Rise up, well! Sing to it! 18 The well that the princes dug, that the leaders of the people opened up, with the staff and with their rods." And from the wilderness [they went] to Mattanah, 19 and from Mattanah to Palgin, and from Palgin to Ramaot, 20 and from Ramaot to the valley that is in the field of Moab, the top of Sekhita, which looks out over Jeshimon. And Shema said to Moses, "Rise, set out, and cross the valley of the Arnon. See, I have given into your hand Sihon king of Heshbon, the Amorite, and his land. Begin to take possession, and draw up for battle against him. This day I begin to put the dread of you and the fear of you on the peoples under the whole heaven, who will hear the report of you and will tremble and quake before you." 21 Israel sent messengers to Sihon king of the Amorite with words of peace, saying, 22 "Let me pass through your land. I will go along the traveled road; we will not turn to the right or to the left, [nor turn aside] into field or vineyard. Sell me food for money and I will eat, and give me water for money and I will drink. Only let me pass through on foot, as the children of Esau who live in Gebala and the Moabites who live in Arsha did for me." 23 But Sihon did not let Israel pass through his border. And Shema said to Moses, "See, I have begun to hand Sihon and his land over to you. Begin to take possession, to inherit his land." Sihon gathered all his people and went out to meet Israel in the wilderness, and came to Jahaz, and fought against Israel. 24 Israel killed him and his sons and all his people with the edge of the sword, and they took possession of his land from the Arnon to the Jabbok, as far as the children of Ammon, for the border of the children of Ammon was strong. 25 Israel took all these cities, and Israel settled in all the cities of the Amorite, in Heshbon and in all its villages. 26 For Heshbon was the city of Sihon king of the Amorite; it was he who had fought against the former king of Moab and taken all his land from his hand as far as the Arnon. 27 Therefore the rulers say: "Come into Heshbon; let the city of Sihon be built and established. 28 For fire went out from Heshbon, a flame from the city of Sihon; it consumed as far as Moab, the lords of the heights of the Arnon. 29 Woe to you, Moab! You are lost, people of Chemosh! He has made his sons fugitives and given his daughters into captivity to the king of the Amorite, Sihon. 30 We have cast them down; Heshbon is destroyed as far as Dibon, and we took captives as far as Nophah; they set fire as far as Medeba." 31 Israel settled in the cities of the Amorite. 32 Moses sent [men] to spy out Jazer, and they captured its villages and drove out the Amorite who was there. 33 They turned and went up by the way of Bathnin, and Og king of Bathnin went out to meet them, he and all his people, for battle at Edrei. 34 Shema said to Moses, "Do not be afraid of him, for I have given him into your hand, and all his people and his land, and you will do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorite, who lived in Heshbon." 35 They killed him and all his people until he had no survivor left, and they took possession of his land.
1 The children of Israel set out and camped in the plain of Moab, beyond the Jordan at Jericho. 2 Balak son of Zippor saw all that Israel had done to the Amorite. 3 Moab was very much afraid of the people, because it was numerous, and Moab was distressed before the children of Israel. 4 Moab said to the elders of Midian, "Now this assembly will lick up everything around us, as the ox licks up the green of the field." Balak son of Zippor was king of Moab at that time. 5 He sent messengers to Balaam son of Beor, the interpreter, who lives by the river, in the land of the children of Ammon, to call him, saying, "A people has come out of Egypt; it has covered the face of the land, and it is settled opposite me. 6 Now come, please, curse this people for me, for it is stronger than I am. Perhaps I will be able to strike it and drive it out of the land, for I know that whoever you bless is blessed and whoever you curse is cursed." 7 The elders of Moab and the elders of Midian went with [fees for] divination in their hand, and came to Balaam and spoke Balak's words to him. 8 He said to them, "Stay here for the night, and I will bring you back word as Shema speaks with me." And the princes of Moab stayed with Balaam. 9 God came to Balaam and said, "Who are these men with you?" 10 Balaam said to God, "Balak son of Zippor, king of Moab, has sent to me, [saying,] 11 'A people has come out of Egypt and has covered the face of the land. Now come, curse it for me; perhaps I will be able to fight against it and drive it out.'" 12 God said to Balaam, "Do not go with them, and do not curse the people, for it is blessed." 13 Balaam got up in the morning and said to Balak's princes, "Go to your land, for Shema refuses to let me go with you." 14 The princes of Moab got up and came to Balak and said, "Balaam refuses to go with us." 15 Balak sent princes again, more numerous and more honored than these. 16 They came to Balaam and said to him, "This is what Balak son of Zippor says: 'Please do not hold back from coming to me, 17 for I will honor you greatly, and whatever you tell me I will do. So come, please, curse this people for me.'" 18 Balaam answered and said to Balak's servants, "Even if Balak gave me his house full of silver or gold, I could not go beyond the word of Shema my God, to do anything small or great. 19 Now please, you too stay here tonight, so that I may know what more Shema will say to me." 20 The angel of God came to Balaam at night and said to him, "If the men have come to call you, get up and go with them; but only the word that I speak with you, that you shall do." 21 Balaam got up in the morning, saddled his donkey, and went with the princes of Moab. 22 The anger of Shema burned because he went, and the angel of Shema took his stand in the road to oppose him. He was riding on his donkey, and his two young men were with him. 23 The donkey saw the angel of Shema standing in the road with his sword drawn in his hand, and the donkey turned off the road and went into the field, and Balaam struck the donkey to turn her back to the road. 24 Then the angel of Shema stood in the path through the vineyards, with a wall on this side and a wall on that side. 25 The donkey saw the angel of Shema and pressed herself against the wall, and she pressed Balaam's foot against the wall, and he struck her again. 26 The angel of Shema went on ahead and stood in a narrow place where there was no way to turn right or left. 27 The donkey saw the angel of Shema and lay down under Balaam, and Balaam's anger burned, and he struck the donkey with the staff. 28 Shema opened the donkey's mouth, and she said to Balaam, "What have I done to you, that you have struck me these three times?" 29 Balaam said to the donkey, "Because you have made a fool of me. If there were a sword in my hand, I would have killed you by now." 30 The donkey said to Balaam, "Am I not your donkey, which you have ridden from your beginning until this day? Have I ever been in the habit of doing this to you?" And he said, "No." 31 Then Shema uncovered Balaam's eyes, and he saw the angel of Shema standing in the road with his sword drawn in his hand, and he knelt and bowed down on his face. 32 The angel of Shema said to him, "Why have you struck your donkey these three times? Look, I have come out to oppose you, because your way is evil before me. 33 The donkey saw me and turned aside from before me these three times. Had she not turned aside from before me, by now I would have killed you and kept her alive." 34 Balaam said to the angel of Shema, "I have sinned, for I did not know that you were standing against me in the road. Now, if it is evil [in your sight], I will go back." 35 The angel of Shema said to Balaam, "Go with the men, but the word that I speak with you, that you must take care to speak." So Balaam went with the princes of Balak. 36 Balak heard that Balaam had come, and he went out to meet him at the City of Moab, which is on the border of the Arnon, at the far end of the border. 37 Balak said to Balaam, "Did I not send urgently to you to call you? Why did you not come to me? Am I really not able to honor you?" 38 Balaam said to Balak, "Here, I have come to you. Am I able now to speak anything at all? The word that God puts in my mouth, that I will take care to speak." 39 Balaam went with Balak, and he brought him into Medinat Razu. 40 Balak slaughtered cattle and sheep and sent [portions] to Balaam and to the princes who were with him. 41 In the morning Balak took Balaam and brought him up to Ramaot-baal, and from there he saw the edge of the people.
1 And Balaam said to Balak, "Build me seven altars here, and get ready for me here seven bulls and seven rams." 2 And Balak did just as Balaam had said, and Balak and Balaam offered up a bull and a ram on [each] altar. 3 And Balaam said to Balak, "Stand by your burnt offering, and I will go. Perhaps God will come to meet me, and whatever he shows me I will tell you." And he went off in secret. 4 And the angel of God met Balaam, and he said to him, "Look, I have set the seven altars in order and offered up a bull and a ram on [each] altar." 5 And the angel of Shema put a word in Balaam's mouth and said, "Go back to Balak, and this is what you will say." 6 And he went back to him, and there he was, standing by his burnt offering, he and all the nobles of Moab. 7 And he took up his parable and said, "From Aram Balak has led me, the king of Moab from the mountains of the east: 'Come, curse Jacob for me, and come, denounce Israel.' 8 How can I curse one whom God has not cursed, and how can I denounce one whom Shema has not denounced? 9 For from the summit of the rocks I see him, and from the hills I praise him. Here is a people that lives by itself and is not counted among the nations. 10 Who can count the dust of Jacob, and who can number a fourth of Israel? Let my soul die the death of the praiseworthy, and let my end be like his!" 11 And Balak said to Balaam, "What have you done to me? I brought you to curse my enemies, and look, you have done nothing but bless [them]!" 12 And he answered and said, "Is it not what Shema puts in my mouth that I must be careful to speak?" 13 And Balak said to him, "Come with me, please, to another place from which you will see them. You will see only the edge of them and will not see them all; and curse them for me from there." 14 And he took him to the field of Zophim, to the top of Sekhita, and built seven altars and offered up a bull and a ram on [each] altar. 15 And he said to Balak, "Stand by your burnt offering, and I will go to be met [by God] over there." 16 And the angel of Shema called to Balaam and put a word in his mouth and said, "Go back to Balak, and this is what you will say." 17 And he came to him, and there he was, standing by his burnt offering, and the nobles of Moab with him. And Balak said to him, "What has Shema said?" 18 And he took up his parable and said, "Get up, Balak, and hear; give ear to my testimony, son of Zippor. 19 God is not a man, that he should lie, nor a human being, that he should change his mind. Has he said, and will he not act? Has he spoken, and will he not carry it out? 20 Look, I was brought here to bless. I will bless, and I will not take it back. 21 I have not looked upon wrongdoing in Jacob, nor seen trouble in Israel. Shema his God is with him, and the acclaim of a king is in his midst. 22 The Mighty One who brought them out of Egypt is to them like the strength of a wild ox. 23 For there is no sorcery in Jacob and no divination in Israel. At the [right] time it will be told to Jacob and to Israel what God has done. 24 Here is a people that rises like a lioness and lifts itself up like a lion. It will not lie down until it finishes the prey and drinks the blood of the slain." 25 And Balak said to Balaam, "Do not curse them at all, and do not bless them at all." 26 And Balaam answered and said to Balak, "Did I not tell you, 'Every word that God speaks, that is what I will do'?" 27 And Balak said to Balaam, "Come, please, I will take you to another place. Perhaps it will be right in the sight of God, and you will curse them for me from there." 28 And Balak took Balaam to the top of Peor, which looks out over Jeshimon. 29 And Balaam said to Balak, "Build me seven altars here, and get ready for me here seven bulls and seven rams." 30 And Balak did just as Balaam had said, and offered up a bull and a ram on [each] altar.
1 When Balaam saw that it was good in the sight of Shema to bless Israel, he did not go, as he had time after time, to meet with omens, but turned his face toward the wilderness. 2 And Balaam lifted up his eyes and saw Israel encamped by its tribes, and the spirit of God came upon him. 3 And he took up his parable and said, "The utterance of Balaam son of Beor, the utterance of the man whose sight is clear, 4 who sees a vision of the Creator, falling down, yet with [his eyes] uncovered. 5 How fine are your dwellings, Jacob, your encampments, Israel! 6 Like streams laid out, like gardens beside a river, like tents that Shema has fixed in place, like cedars beside the waters. 7 Water drips from his branches, and his seed is in many waters. His king will be higher than Gog, and his kingdom will be lifted up. 8 The Mighty One led him out of Egypt; he has as it were the strength of a wild ox. He will consume the nations that oppress him, crush their bones, and pierce [them] with his arrows. 9 He crouched, he lay down like a lion and like a lioness; who will rouse him? Those who bless you are blessed, and those who curse you are cursed." 10 And Balak's anger grew fierce against Balaam, and he clapped his hands. And Balak said to Balaam, "I called you to curse my enemies, and look, you have done nothing but bless [them] these three times. 11 So now, flee to your place. I said I would heap honor on you, but look, Shema has held you back from honor." 12 And Balaam said to Balak, "Did I not also speak to your messengers whom you sent to me, saying, 13 'If Balak gives me his house full of silver and gold, I cannot go beyond the word of Shema to do good or bad on my own accord. What Shema speaks to me, that is what I will speak'? 14 And now I am going to my people. Come, and I will advise you what this people will do to your people at the end of days." 15 And he took up his parable and said, "The utterance of Balaam son of Beor, the utterance of the man whose sight is clear, 16 the utterance of one who hears the sayings of God and knows the wisdom of the Most High. He sees a vision of the Creator, falling down, yet with his sight uncovered. 17 I see him, but not now; I praise him, but not near. A star shines forth from Jacob, and a scepter rises from Israel, and it will strike the sides of Moab and the pride of all the sons of Sheth. 18 And Edom will be a possession, and Esau his enemy will be a possession, and Israel will act valiantly. 19 And one from Jacob will rule and will destroy the survivors from the city." 20 And he saw Amalek and took up his parable and said, "Amalek is the first of the nations, and his end is to perish." 21 And he saw the Kenites and took up his parable and said, "Secure is your dwelling, and your nest is set in the rock. 22 Yet Kain will be for burning, until your return from Asshur." 23 And he took up his parable and said, "Woe to whoever will be [counted] by his name! The Mighty One 24 will bring them out from the hand of the Kittites; they will afflict Asshur and afflict Eber, and he too [will last only] until he perishes." 25 And Balaam rose and went and returned to his place, and Balak too went his way.
1 And Israel stayed in Shittim, and the people began to commit fornication with the daughters of Moab. 2 And they called the people to the sacrifices of their gods, and the people ate and bowed down to their gods. 3 And [some] of the children of Israel attached themselves to Baal Peor, and the anger of Shema grew fierce against Israel. 4 And Shema said to Moses, "Give the order, and let them kill the men who attached themselves to Baal Peor, so that the fierce anger of Shema may turn back from Israel." 5 And Moses said to the judges of Israel, "Each of you kill his men who attached themselves to Baal Peor." 6 And look, a man of the children of Israel came and brought a Midianite woman near to his brothers before the eyes of Moses and before the eyes of the whole congregation of the children of Israel, while they were weeping at the door of the tent of meeting. 7 And Phinehas son of Eleazar son of Aaron the priest saw [it], and he rose from the midst of the congregation and took a spear in his hand. 8 And he went in after the man of Israel into the alcove and stabbed the two of them, the man of Israel and the woman, through her belly. And the plague was held back from the children of Israel. 9 And those who died in the plague numbered twenty-four thousand. 10 And Shema spoke with Moses, saying, 11 "Phinehas son of Eleazar son of Aaron the priest has turned my fury back from the children of Israel by being zealous with my zeal among them, so that I did not wipe out the children of Israel in my zeal. 12 Therefore say, 'Look, I am giving him my covenant of peace, 13 and it will be for him and for his descendants after him a covenant of everlasting priesthood, in return for his zeal for his God and the atonement he made for the children of Israel.'" 14 And the name of the slain man of Israel, who was killed with the Midianite woman, was Zimri son of Salu, a chief of a father's house of the Simeonites. 15 And the name of the slain Midianite woman was Cozbi daughter of Zur; he was head of a clan, a father's house in Midian. 16 And Shema spoke with Moses, saying, 17 "Oppress the Midianites and kill them, 18 for they are oppressing you with their schemes, which they schemed against you in the matter of Peor and in the matter of Cozbi, daughter of a chief of Midian, their sister, who was killed on the day of the plague over the matter of Peor." 19 And it came to pass after the plague,
1 And Shema spoke with Moses and with Eleazar son of Aaron the priest, saying: 2 "Take the total of the whole congregation of the children of Israel, from twenty years old and over, by their fathers' houses, everyone in Israel who goes out with the army." 3 So Moses and Eleazar the priest spoke with them in the plain of Moab by the Jordan of Jericho, saying, 4 "[Count them] from twenty years old and over, as Shema commanded Moses." And the children of Israel who went out of the land of Egypt [were these]: 5 Reuben, Israel's firstborn. The sons of Reuben: of Hanoch, the clan of the Hanochites; of Pallu, the clan of the Palluites; 6 of Hezron, the clan of the Hezronites; of Carmi, the clan of the Carmites. 7 These are the clans of the Reubenites, and their count was forty-three thousand seven hundred and thirty. 8 The sons of Pallu: Eliab. 9 And the sons of Eliab: Nemuel, Dathan and Abiram. These are the same Dathan and Abiram, men summoned by the congregation, who banded together against Moses and against Aaron in the congregation of Korah when they raged against Shema. 10 And the earth opened its mouth, and the earth swallowed them when the congregation died, when the fire consumed Korah and two hundred and fifty men; and they became [a cause] for flight. 11 But the sons of Korah did not die. 12 The sons of Simeon, by the clans of the Simeonites: of Nemuel, the clan of the Nemuelites; of Jamin, the clan of the Jaminites; 13 of Zerah, the clan of the Zerahites; of Shaul, the clan of the Shaulites. 14 These are the clans of the Simeonites: twenty-two thousand two hundred. 15 The sons of Gad by their clans: of Zephon, the clan of the Zephonites; of Haggi, the clan of the Haggites; of Shuni, the clan of the Shunites; 16 of Ozni, the clan of the Oznites; of Adi, the clan of the Adites; 17 of Arodi, the clan of the Arodites; of Aroli, the clan of the Arolites. 18 These are the clans of Gad by their count: forty thousand five hundred. 19 The sons of Judah: Er and Onan; and Er and Onan died in the land of Canaan. 20 And the sons of Judah by their clans were: of Shelah, the clan of the Shelanites; of Perez, the clan of the Perezites; of Zerah, the clan of the Zerahites. 21 And the sons of Perez were: of Hezron, the clan of the Hezronites; of Hamuel, the clan of the Hamuelites. 22 These are the clans of Judah by their count: seventy-six thousand five hundred. 23 The sons of Issachar by their clans: of Tola, the clan of the Tolaites; of Puah, the clan of the Puahites; 24 of Jashub, the clan of the Jashubites; of Shimron, the clan of the Shimronites. 25 These are the clans of Issachar by their count: sixty-four thousand three hundred. 26 The sons of Zebulun by their clans: of Sered, the clan of the Seredites; of Elon, the clan of the Elonites; of Jahleel, the clan of the Jahleelites. 27 These are the clans of Zebulun by their count: sixty thousand five hundred. 28 The sons of Joseph by their clans: Manasseh and Ephraim. 29 The sons of Manasseh: of Machir, the clan of the Machirites; and Machir fathered Gilead; [of Gilead,] the clan of the Gileadites. 30 These are the sons of Gilead: Ahizer, the clan of the Ahizerites; and Helek, the clan of the Helekites; 31 and Ashruel, the clan of the Ashruelites; and Shechem, the clan of the Shechemites; 32 and Shemida, the clan of the Shemidaites; and Hepher, the clan of the Hepherites. 33 Zelophehad son of Hepher had no sons, only daughters; and the names of Zelophehad's daughters were Mahlah and Noah, Hoglah, Milcah and Tirzah. 34 These are the clans of Manasseh by their count: fifty-two thousand seven hundred. 35 And these are the sons of Ephraim by their clans: of Shuthelah, the clan of the Shuthelahites; of Becher, the clan of the Becherites; of Taham, the clan of the Tahamites. 36 These are the sons of Shuthelah: of Eden, the clan of the Edenites. 37 These are the clans of the sons of Ephraim by their count: thirty-two thousand five hundred. And not one man of them was left except Caleb son of Jephunneh and Joshua son of Nun.
1 Then the daughters of Zelophehad son of Hepher son of Gilead son of Machir son of Manasseh, of the families of Manasseh son of Joseph, came forward. These are the names of his daughters: Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah and Tirzah. 2 They stood before Moses, before Eleazar the priest, before the chiefs and before the whole congregation at the door of the tent of meeting, and said: 3 "Our father died in the wilderness. He was not in the band of those who rebelled against Shema in the band of Korah; he died in his own sin, and he had no sons. 4 Why should our father's name be cut off from his family because he has no son? Give us a possession, a portion among our father's brothers." 5 So Moses brought their case before Shema. 6 And Shema spoke with Moses, saying: 7 "The daughters of Zelophehad speak well. You must give them a possession, a portion among their father's brothers, and pass their father's portion on to them. 8 And speak to the Israelites, saying: If a man dies and has no son, you shall give his portion to his daughter. 9 If he has no daughter, you shall give his portion to his brothers. 10 If he has no brothers, you shall give his portion to his father's brothers. 11 If his father has no brothers, you shall give his portion to the relative closest to him in his family, and he shall inherit it. This shall be a decree of law for the Israelites, as Shema commanded Moses." 12 Shema spoke with Moses, saying: "Go up onto this mountain, Ebrai, and look at the land I have given to the Israelites. 13 When you have seen it, you too will be gathered to your people, as Aaron your brother was gathered, 14 because you defied my word in the wilderness of Zin, in the quarrel of the congregation, when you should have sanctified me at the waters before their eyes." These are the waters of the Quarrel of Kadesh in the wilderness of Zin. 15 Then Moses spoke with Shema, saying: 16 "Let Shema, God of the spirits of all flesh, appoint a man over the congregation 17 who will go out before them and come in before them, who will lead them out and bring them in, so that the congregation of Shema will not be like sheep that have no shepherd." 18 Shema said to Moses: "Take Joshua son of Nun, a man in whom there is spirit, and lay your hand on him. 19 Set him before Eleazar the priest and before the whole congregation, and commission him in their sight. 20 Put some of your majesty on him, so that the whole congregation of the Israelites will listen [to him]. 21 He shall stand before Eleazar the priest, who shall ask for him by the judgment of the Lights before Shema. At his word he shall go out and at his word he shall come in, he and all the Israelites with him, the whole congregation." 22 Moses did as Shema commanded him. He took Joshua and set him before Eleazar the priest and before the whole congregation. 23 He laid his hand on him and commissioned him, as Shema had spoken through Moses. And he said to him: "Your eyes have seen what Shema did to these two kings. Shema will do the same to all the kingdoms you are crossing over to. Do not fear them, for Shema your God is the one who fights for you."
1 Shema spoke with Moses, saying: 2 "Command the Israelites and say to them: My offering, my food, an offering of my pleasing fragrance, you shall take care to offer to me at its appointed times. 3 Say to them: This is the offering you shall offer to Shema: year-old lambs without blemish, two each day, as a continual burnt offering. 4 Make the one lamb in the morning, and make the second lamb at dusk, 5 with a tenth measure of fine flour as a grain offering, mixed with a quarter of a hin of oil. 6 It is a continual burnt offering, made at Mount Sinai for a pleasing fragrance, an offering to Shema. 7 Its drink offering is a quarter of a hin for the one lamb. In the sanctuary pour out a drink offering of strong drink to Shema. 8 Make the second lamb at dusk; make it like the morning grain offering and its drink offerings, an offering of pleasing fragrance to Shema. 9 On the Sabbath day, two year-old lambs without blemish, and two tenths of fine flour as a grain offering mixed with oil, and its drink offering. 10 The burnt offering of each Sabbath on its Sabbath, along with the continual burnt offering and its drink offerings. 11 At the beginnings of your months you shall offer a burnt offering to Shema: two young bulls, one ram, and seven year-old lambs without blemish, 12 with three tenths of fine flour as a grain offering mixed with oil for each bull, and two tenths of fine flour as a grain offering mixed with oil for the one ram, 13 and a tenth of fine flour as a grain offering mixed with oil for each lamb: a burnt offering of pleasing fragrance, an offering to Shema. 14 Their drink offerings are half a hin of wine for each bull, a third of a hin for the ram, and a quarter of a hin of wine for each lamb. This is the burnt offering of each month at its renewal, through the months of the year. 15 And one male goat for the sin offering to Shema; it shall be made along with the continual burnt offering and its drink offering. 16 In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month, is Shema's Passover. 17 On the fifteenth day of this month is a festival. For seven days you shall eat unleavened bread. 18 On the first day there is a holy assembly; you shall do no work of labor. 19 You shall offer an offering, a burnt offering to Shema: two young bulls, one ram, and seven year-old lambs; they shall be without blemish for you. 20 Their grain offering is fine flour mixed with oil; you shall make three tenths for the bull and two tenths for the ram, 21 and a tenth for each lamb of the seven lambs, 22 and one male goat for the sin offering, to make atonement for you. 23 You shall make these apart from the morning burnt offering, which belongs to the continual burnt offering. 24 In this way you shall make [them] each day for the seven days: the food of the offering, for a pleasing fragrance to Shema. It shall be made along with the continual burnt offering and its drink offering. 25 On the seventh day you shall have a holy assembly; you shall do no work of labor. 26 On the day of the firstfruits, when you bring a new grain offering to Shema at your Weeks festival, you shall have a holy assembly; you shall do no work of labor. 27 You shall offer a burnt offering, an offering of pleasing fragrance to Shema: two young bulls, one ram, and seven year-old lambs; they shall be without blemish for you. 28 Their grain offering is fine flour mixed with oil: three tenths for each bull and two tenths for the one ram, 29 and a tenth for each lamb of the seven lambs, 30 and one male goat for the sin offering, to make atonement for you. 31 You shall make [them] apart from the continual burnt offering and its grain offering; they shall be without blemish for you, with their drink offerings.
1 And in the seventh month, on the first of the month, there shall be a holy assembly for you. You shall do no servile work at all. It shall be a day of sounding [the trumpet] for you. 2 And you shall make a burnt offering for a pleasing aroma to Shema: one young bull, one ram, and seven lambs a year old, unblemished. 3 And their grain offering shall be fine flour mixed with oil: three tenths for the bull and two tenths for the ram, 4 and one tenth for each lamb of the seven lambs, 5 and one male goat for the sin offering, to make atonement for you, 6 apart from the burnt offering of the new month and its grain offering, and the continual burnt offering with its grain offering and its drink offerings, according to their rule, for a pleasing aroma, an offering to Shema. 7 And on the tenth of this seventh month there shall be a holy assembly for you. You shall make your souls fast, and you shall do no work at all. 8 And you shall bring a burnt offering to Shema for a pleasing aroma: one young bull, one ram, and seven lambs a year old. They shall be unblemished for you. 9 And their grain offering shall be fine flour mixed with oil: three tenths for the bull and two tenths for the one ram, 10 and a tenth, a tenth for each lamb of the seven lambs, 11 and one male goat for the sin offering, besides the atonement offering, and the continual burnt offering with its grain offering and its drink offerings. 12 And on the fifteenth day of this seventh month there shall be a holy assembly for you. You shall do no servile work at all, and you shall keep a festival to Shema for seven days. 13 And you shall bring a burnt offering, an offering with a pleasing aroma to Shema: thirteen young bulls, two rams, and fourteen lambs a year old. They shall be unblemished for you. 14 And their grain offering shall be fine flour mixed with oil: three tenths for each bull of the thirteen bulls, and two tenths for each ram of the two rams, 15 and a tenth, a tenth for each lamb of the fourteen lambs, and their drink offerings, 16 and one male goat for the sin offering, apart from the continual burnt offering with its grain offering and its drink offerings. 17 And on the second day: twelve young bulls, two rams, and fourteen lambs a year old, unblemished, 18 and their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bulls, for the rams and for the lambs, by their number, according to the regulation, 19 and one male goat for the sin offering, apart from the continual burnt offering with its grain offering and its drink offerings. 20 And on the third day: eleven bulls, two rams, and fourteen lambs a year old, unblemished, 21 and their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bulls, for the rams and for the lambs, by their number, according to the rule, 22 and one male goat for the sin offering, apart from the continual burnt offering with its grain offering and its drink offerings. 23 And on the fourth day: ten bulls, two rams, and fourteen lambs a year old, unblemished, 24 and their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bulls, for the rams and for the lambs, by their number, according to the rule, 25 and one male goat for the sin offering, apart from the continual burnt offering with its grain offering and its drink offerings. 26 And on the fifth day: nine bulls, two rams, and fourteen lambs a year old, unblemished, 27 and their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bulls, for the rams and for the lambs, by their number, according to the regulation, 28 and one male goat for the sin offering, apart from the continual burnt offering with its grain offering and its drink offerings. 29 And on the sixth day: eight bulls, two rams, and fourteen lambs a year old, unblemished, 30 and their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bulls, for the rams and for the lambs, by their number, according to the regulation, 31 and one male goat for the sin offering, apart from the continual burnt offering with its grain offering and its drink offerings. 32 And on the seventh day: seven bulls, two rams, and fourteen lambs a year old, unblemished, 33 and their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bulls, for the rams and for the lambs, by their number, according to the regulation, 34 and one male goat for the sin offering, apart from the continual burnt offering with its grain offering and its drink offerings. 35 And on the eighth day there shall be a closing assembly for you, and you shall do no servile work at all. 36 And you shall bring a burnt offering, an offering with a pleasing aroma to Shema: one bull, one ram, and seven lambs a year old, unblemished, 37 their grain offering and their drink offerings for the bull, for the ram and for the lambs, by their number, according to the regulation, 38 and one male goat for the sin offering, apart from the continual burnt offering with its grain offering and its drink offerings. 39 These you shall offer to Shema at your appointed times, apart from your vows and your freewill offerings, for your burnt offerings, your grain offerings, your drink offerings and your peace offerings.
1 Moses spoke to the children of Israel in keeping with all that Shema had commanded Moses. 2 And Moses spoke with the heads of the tribes of the children of Israel, saying: This is the matter that Shema has commanded. 3 If a man vows a vow to Shema, or swears an oath to bind a binding obligation on his soul, he shall not release his words; he shall act in keeping with all that has come out of his mouth. 4 And if a woman vows a vow to Shema and binds herself with a binding obligation while in her father's house, in her youth, 5 and her father hears her vows and her binding obligations that she has bound on her soul, and her father keeps silent toward her, then all her vows shall stand, and her binding obligations that she has bound on her soul shall stand. 6 But if her father restrains her on the day he hears, none of her vows and her binding obligations that she has bound on her soul shall stand. Shema will forgive her, because her father restrained her. 7 And if she becomes [the wife] of a man while her vows are on her, or the expression of her lips by which she has bound her soul, 8 and her husband hears, and on the day he hears keeps silent toward her, then all her vows shall stand, and her binding obligations that she has bound on her soul shall stand. 9 But if on the day her husband hears he restrains her, he shall cancel her vows that are on her, or the expression of her lips by which she has bound her soul, and Shema will forgive her. 10 And the vow of a widow or a divorced woman, everything that she has bound on her soul, shall stand against her. 11 And if she vowed in her husband's house, or bound a binding obligation on her soul with an oath, 12 and her husband hears and keeps silent toward her and does not restrain her, then all her vows shall stand, and all her binding obligations that she has bound on her soul shall stand. 13 But if her husband fully cancels them on the day he hears, nothing that comes out of her lips concerning her vows or concerning the binding obligation of her soul shall stand. Her husband has canceled them, and Shema will forgive her. 14 Every vow and every oath to afflict the soul, her husband may confirm it, and her husband may cancel it. 15 But if her husband keeps silent toward her from day to day, he confirms all her vows or all her binding obligations that are on her. He has confirmed them, because he kept silent toward her on the day he heard. 16 But if he cancels them after he has heard, he shall take on her guilt. 17 These are the decrees that Shema commanded Moses, between a man and his wife, and between a father and his daughter in her youth, in her father's house.
1 And Shema spoke with Moses, saying: 2 “Exact the retribution owed to the children of Israel from the Midianites, and afterward you will be gathered to your people.” 3 And Moses spoke with the people, saying: “Arm men from among you for the army, and let them go against Midian to carry out Shema’s vengeance on Midian. 4 A thousand for each tribe, a thousand for each tribe, from all the tribes of Israel, you shall send to the army.” 5 So from the thousands of Israel there were picked out a thousand for each tribe, twelve thousand equipped for the army. 6 And Moses sent them, a thousand for each tribe, to the army, them and Phinehas son of Eleazar the priest, to the army, with the holy vessels and the trumpets for sounding the alarm in his hand. 7 And they made war on Midian as Shema had commanded Moses, and they killed every male. 8 And they killed the kings of Midian together with their slain: Evi, Rekem, Zur, Hur and Reba, the five kings of Midian; and Balaam son of Beor they killed with the sword. 9 And the children of Israel took the women of Midian captive, with their little ones, and they plundered all their cattle, all their possessions and all their wealth. 10 And all their cities where they lived, and all their encampments, they burned with fire. 11 And they took all the spoil and all the plunder, of people and of beasts. 12 And they brought the captives, the plunder and the spoil to Moses, to Eleazar the priest and to all the congregation of the children of Israel, to the camp at the plains of Moab, which are by the Jordan of Jericho. 13 And Moses, Eleazar the priest and all the princes of the congregation went out to meet them outside the camp. 14 Moses was angry with the army's officers — the captains of thousands and of hundreds — who had come back from the army of the battle. 15 And Moses said to them: “Why have you kept every female alive 16 here? These were [the cause] for the children of Israel, through the word of Balaam, to act faithlessly against Shema in the matter of Peor, and the plague came on the congregation of Shema. 17 So now kill every male among the little ones, and every woman who has known a man by lying with a male, kill. 18 But every little one among the women who have not known lying with a male, keep alive for yourselves. 19 And you, camp outside the camp for seven days. Everyone who killed a person and everyone who touched one of the slain, purify yourselves on the third day and on the seventh day, you and your captives. 20 And every garment, every article of skin, all work of goats’ [hair] and every article of wood you shall purify.” And Moses said to Eleazar the priest: “Tell the men of the army who went to the battle: This is the decree of the law that Shema commanded: Only gold, silver, bronze, iron, tin and lead — anything that can go into the fire you shall pass through the fire, and it will be clean; only it shall be purified with the water of impurity; and anything that cannot go into the fire you shall pass through the water. And on the seventh day you shall wash your clothes and be clean, and afterward you shall come into the camp.” 21 And Eleazar the priest said to the men of the army who went to the battle: “This is the decree of the law that Shema commanded Moses: 22 Only gold and silver and bronze, iron and tin and lead, 23 anything that can go into the fire you shall pass through the fire, and it will be clean; only it shall be purified with the water of impurity; and anything that cannot go into the fire you shall pass through the water. 24 And you shall wash your clothes on the seventh day and become clean, and afterward you shall enter the camp.” 25 And Shema said to Moses: 26 “Take the count of the captured plunder, of people and of beasts, you and Eleazar the priest and the heads of the fathers of the congregation, 27 and divide the plunder between those who waged the battle, who went out with the army, and all the congregation. 28 And set aside a levy for Shema from the men of battle who went out with the army: one soul out of five hundred, from the people, from the oxen, from the donkeys, from the sheep, from all the beasts. 29 You shall take it from their half and give it to Eleazar the priest as Shema’s raised offering. 30 And from the half of the children of Israel you shall take one taken out of every fifty, from the people, from the oxen, from the donkeys, from the sheep, from all the beasts, and give them to the Levites who keep the watch of Shema’s tabernacle.” 31 And Moses and Eleazar the priest did as Shema had commanded Moses. 32 And the spoil, the remainder of the plunder that the army had plundered, was: sheep, six hundred and seventy-five thousand; 33 and oxen, seventy-two thousand; 34 and donkeys, sixty-one thousand; 35 and human persons, from the women who had not known lying with a male, all the persons, thirty-two thousand. 36 And the half, the share of those who went out with the army, was in number: sheep, three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred. 37 And Shema’s levy from the sheep was six hundred and seventy-five. 38 And the oxen were thirty-six thousand, and their levy for Shema seventy-two. 39 And the donkeys were thirty thousand five hundred, and their levy for Shema sixty-one. 40 And the human persons were sixteen thousand, and their levy for Shema thirty-two persons. 41 And Moses gave the levy, Shema’s raised offering, to Eleazar the priest, as Shema had commanded Moses. 42 And from the half of the children of Israel, which Moses divided off from the men of the army, 43 the congregation’s half was: from the sheep, three hundred and thirty-seven thousand five hundred; 44 and oxen, thirty-six thousand; 45 and donkeys, thirty thousand five hundred; 46 and human persons, sixteen thousand. 47 And Moses took from the half of the children of Israel the one taken out of every fifty, from the people and from the beasts, and gave them to the Levites who keep the watch of Shema’s tabernacle, as Shema had commanded Moses. 48 And the officers over the thousands of the army, the captains of thousands and the captains of hundreds, came up to Moses, 49 and they said to Moses: “Your servants have taken the count of the men of battle who are under our hands, and not a man of us is missing. 50 So we are bringing Shema’s offering, what each man found: articles of gold, chains and bracelets, rings, earrings and pendants, to make atonement for our souls before Shema.” 51 And Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from them, all of it crafted articles. 52 And the gold of the raised offering that they raised up to Shema was sixteen thousand seven hundred and fifty shekels, from the captains of thousands and from the captains of hundreds. 53 The men of the army had taken plunder, each man for himself. 54 Moses and Eleazar the priest took the gold from the captains of thousands and of hundreds, and they brought it into the tent of meeting before Shema as a memorial for the children of Israel.
1 The children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh had a great deal of livestock, an exceedingly large amount. They saw the land of Jazer and the land of Gilead, and saw that the place was a place for livestock. 2 So the children of Gad and the children of Reuben and the half-tribe of Manasseh came and said to Moses and to Eleazar the priest and to the princes of the congregation: 3 "Ataroth and Dibon and Jazer and Nimrah and Heshbon and Elealeh and Shebam and Nebo and Beon, 4 the land that Shema conquered before the congregation of Israel, is a land for livestock, and your servants have livestock." 5 And they said, "If we have found mercy in your eyes, let this land be given to your servants as a possession, and do not make us cross the Jordan." 6 Moses said to the children of Reuben and to the children of Gad and to the half-tribe of Manasseh, "Are your brothers to go into the battle while you stay here? 7 Why would you bring down the heart of the children of Israel from crossing to the land that Shema has given them? 8 This is what your fathers did when I sent them from Kadesh Barnea to look at the land. 9 They went up to the Valley of Eshcol and saw the land, and they brought down the heart of the children of Israel so that they would not enter the land that Shema had given them. 10 Shema's anger grew strong on that day, and he swore: 11 'Not one of the men who came up from Egypt, from twenty years old and upward, will see the land that I swore to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob, because they did not follow after me fully, 12 except Caleb son of Jephunneh the Kenizzite and Joshua son of Nun, because they followed after Shema fully.' 13 Shema's anger grew strong against Israel, and he made them wander in the wilderness forty years, until the whole generation that had done evil in Shema's sight was finished. 14 And now you have risen up in place of your fathers, a breed of sinful men, to add still more to the strength of Shema's anger against Israel. 15 For if you turn back from following him, he will again make them wander in the wilderness, and you will destroy this whole people." 16 Then they came forward to him and said, "We will build sheep pens here for our livestock, and towns for our little ones, 17 but we ourselves will go armed and ready before the children of Israel until we have brought them to their place. Our little ones will live in the fortified towns because of the inhabitants of the land. 18 We will not go back to our houses until the children of Israel have each taken possession of their own holding. 19 For we will not take possession with them across the Jordan and beyond, because our holding has come into our hands across the Jordan to the east." 20 Moses said to them, "If you do this thing, if you arm yourselves before Shema for the battle, 21 and every armed man of you crosses the Jordan before Shema until he has driven out his enemies from before him, 22 and the land is conquered before Shema, then afterward you may go back, and you will be free of guilt before Shema and before Israel, and this land will be yours as a possession before Shema. 23 But if you do not do so, then you have become guilty before Shema; and know that your sins will find you. 24 Build towns for your little ones and pens for your sheep, and do what has gone out of your mouth." 25 The children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh said to Moses, "Your servants will do as my lord commands. 26 Our little ones and our wives, our livestock and all our cattle will be there in the towns of Gilead, 27 but your servants will cross, every one armed with strength, before Shema into the battle, as my lord has spoken." 28 So Moses gave orders concerning them to Eleazar the priest and to Joshua son of Nun and to the heads of the fathers of the tribes of the children of Israel. 29 Moses said to them, "If the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh cross the Jordan with you, every one armed for battle before Shema, and the land is conquered before you, then you shall give them the land of Gilead as a possession. 30 But if they do not cross armed with you, they shall take possession among you in the land of Canaan." 31 The children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh answered, "What Shema has spoken with your servants, that we will do. 32 We will cross armed before Shema [into] the land of Canaan, and the holding of our possession [will remain] with us across the Jordan." 33 So Moses gave them, the children of Reuben and the children of Gad and the half-tribe of Manasseh son of Joseph, the kingdom of Sihon king of the Amorites and the kingdom of Og king of Bathnin: the land with its towns within [their] borders, the towns of the land all around. 34 The children of Gad built Dibon and Ataroth and Aroer, 35 and Ataroth-shephim and Jazer, and they raised it high, 36 and Beth-nimrah and Beth-haran, fortified towns, and pens for sheep. 37 The children of Reuben built Heshbon and Elealeh and Kiriathaim, 38 and Nebo and Baal-meon, surrounded there, and Shebam; and they called the towns that they built by [new] names. 39 The children of Machir son of Manasseh went to Gilead and conquered it, and drove out the Amorites who were in it. 40 Moses gave Gilead to Machir son of Manasseh, and he settled in it. 41 Jair son of Manasseh went and conquered Havvothim, and called them Havvoth-jair. 42 Nobah went and conquered Kenath and its villages, and called it Nobah after his own name.
1 These are the journeys of the children of Israel who went out from the land of Egypt by their armies, by the hand of Moses and Aaron. 2 Moses wrote down their departures, journey by journey, at the word of Shema; and these are their journeys by their departures. 3 They set out from Rameses in the first month, on the fifteenth day of that first month. On the day after the Passover, with a raised hand, the children of Israel went out before the eyes of all the Egyptians, 4 while the Egyptians were burying those whom Shema had killed among them, every firstborn; and on their gods Shema carried out punishments. 5 The children of Israel set out from Rameses and camped at Succoth. 6 They set out from Succoth and camped at Etham, which is at the edge of the wilderness. 7 They set out from Etham and settled at Pi-hahiroth, which faces Baal-zephon, and they camped in front of Migdol. 8 They set out from Pi-hahiroth and crossed through the middle of the sea into the wilderness; they traveled a three days' road in the wilderness of Etham and camped at Marah. 9 They set out from Marah and came to Elim. At Elim there were twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees, and they camped there. 10 They set out from Elim and camped by the Sea of Suf. 11 They set out from the Sea of Suf and camped in the wilderness of Sin. 12 They set out from the wilderness of Sin and camped at Dipqa. 13 They set out from Dipqa and camped at Alish. 14 They set out from Alish and camped at Rephidim, and there was no water there for the people to drink. 15 They set out from Rephidim and camped in the wilderness of Sinai. 16 They set out from the wilderness of Sinai and camped at Qibre-tahmadta. 17 They set out from Qibre-tahmadta and camped at Hazeroth. 18 They set out from Hazeroth and camped at Ritma. 19 They set out from Ritma and camped at Rimmon-perez. 20 They set out from Rimmon-perez and camped at Libnah. 21 They set out from Libnah and camped at Rissa. 22 They set out from Rissa and camped at Qehelta. 23 They set out from Qehelta and camped at Mount Shepher. 24 They set out from Mount Shepher and camped at Harada. 25 They set out from Harada and camped at Maqhelot. 26 They set out from Maqhelot and camped at Tahat. 27 They set out from Tahat and camped at Terah. 28 They set out from Terah and camped at Mitqa. 29 They set out from Mitqa and camped at Hashmona. 30 They set out from Hashmona and camped at Masirot. 31 They set out from Masirot and camped at Bene-yaaqan. 32 They set out from Bene-yaaqan and camped at Mount Hagidgeda. 33 They set out from Mount Hagidgeda and camped at Yotbeta. 34 They set out from Yotbeta and camped at Ebrona. 35 They set out from Ebrona and camped at Ezion-geber. 36 They set out from Ezion-geber and camped in the wilderness of Zin, that is, Kadesh. 37 They set out from Kadesh and camped at Mount Tura, at the border of the land of Edom. 38 Aaron the priest went up Mount Tura at the word of Shema and died there, in the fortieth year after the children of Israel went out from the land of Egypt, in the fifth month, on the first of the month. 39 Aaron was a hundred and twenty-three years old when he died on Mount Tura. 40 The Canaanite, the king of Arad, who lived in the south in the land of Canaan, heard of the coming of the children of Israel. 41 They set out from Mount Tura and camped at Zalmona. 42 They set out from Zalmona and camped at Pinan. 43 They set out from Pinan and camped at Oboth. 44 They set out from Oboth and camped at Kafrane-abraye, at the border of Moab. 45 They set out from Kafrane-abraye and camped at Dibon-gad. 46 They set out from Dibon-gad and camped at Almon-deblatima. 47 They set out from Almon-deblatima and camped in the mountains of Abraye, in front of Nebo. 48 They set out from the mountains of Abraye and camped in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho. 49 They camped by the Jordan from Beth-jeshimoth as far as Abel-shittim in the plains of Moab. 50 Shema spoke with Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan at Jericho, saying, 51 "Speak with the children of Israel and tell them: When you cross the Jordan into the land of the Canaanite, 52 you shall drive out all the inhabitants of the land from before you and destroy all their carved stones; all their images of worship you shall destroy, and all their high places you shall wipe out. 53 You shall drive them out of the land and live in it, for to you I have given the land to inherit it. 54 You shall divide the land by lot among your families; to the larger you shall make its share larger. Wherever the lot falls for someone, there it shall be his. You shall divide it by the tribes of your fathers. 55 But if you do not drive out the inhabitants of the land from before you, those of them you leave shall be as barbs in your eyes and as thorns in your sides, and they will harass you in the land where you live. 56 And as I intended to do to them, so I will do to you."
1 And Shema spoke with Moses, saying: 2 "Command the children of Israel and tell them: When you enter the land of Canaan (this is the land that will fall to you as a holding, the land of the Canaanite by its borders), 3 your south side will run from the wilderness of Zin alongside Edom, and your southern border will run from the end of the Salt Sea on the east. 4 The border will turn for you south of the ascent of Akrabbim and cross to Zin, and its outlet will be south of Kadesh-barnea. It will go out to Darat-addar and cross to Azmon. 5 The border will turn from Azmon to the brook of Egypt, and its outlet will be at the sea. 6 As for the western border, the Great Sea will be yours, and it will set the boundary. This will be your western border. 7 And this will be your northern border: from the Great Sea you will mark out for yourselves [a line] to the mountain of mountains. 8 From the mountain of mountains you will mark out [a line] to the entrance of Hamath, and the outlet of the border will be at Zerada. 9 The border will go out to Ziphrona, and its outlet will be at Darat-enan. This will be your northern border. 10 For your eastern border you will mark out [a line] from Darat-enan to Apamea. 11 The border will go down from Apamea to Harbalta, east of Ain; and the border will go down and reach to the shoulder of the Sea of Gennesar on the east. 12 The border will go down to the Jordan, and its outlet will be the Salt Sea. This will be your land by its borders all around." 13 Moses commanded the children of Israel, saying, "This is the land that you will divide by lot, which Shema commanded to be given to the nine tribes and the half-tribe. 14 For the tribe of the Reubenites by their fathers' houses and the tribe of the Gadites by their fathers' houses have taken [theirs], and half the tribe of Manasseh have taken their share. 15 The two tribes and the half-tribe have taken their share on the far side of the Jordan, to the east, eastward." 16 And Shema spoke with Moses, saying: 17 "These are the names of the men who will divide the land for you: Eleazar the priest and Joshua son of Nun. 18 You will take one chief, one chief from each tribe, to divide the land. 19 These are the names of the men: for the tribe of Judah, Caleb son of Jephunneh; 20 for the tribe of the Simeonites, Shemuel son of Ammihud; 21 for the tribe of Benjamin, Eldad son of Kislan; 22 for the tribe of the Danites, a chief, Bukki son of Jogli; 23 of the sons of Joseph: for the tribe of the Manassites, a chief, Hanniel son of Ephod; 24 and for the tribe of the Ephraimites, a chief, Kemuel son of Shiphtan; 25 and for the tribe of the Zebulunites, a chief, Elizaphan son of Parnach; 26 and for the tribe of the Issacharites, a chief, Paltiel son of Azzan; 27 and for the tribe of the Asherites, a chief, Ahihud son of Shalmi; 28 and for the tribe of the Naphtalites, a chief, Pedahel son of Ammihud. 29 These are the ones whom Shema commanded to divide [the land] among the children of Israel in the land of the Canaanite."
1 And Shema spoke with Moses in the valley of Moab by the Jordan of Jericho, saying: 2 "Command the children of Israel to give the Levites, from the share of their holding, towns to live in; and you will give the Levites open land around the towns. 3 The towns will be theirs to live in, and their open land will be for their cattle, for their goods and for all their animals. 4 The open land of the towns that you give the Levites will reach from the town wall outward a thousand cubits all around. 5 You will measure outside the town two thousand cubits on the east side, two thousand cubits on the south side, two thousand cubits on the west side and two thousand cubits on the north side, with the town in the middle. This will be the open land of your towns. 6 Among the towns that you give the Levites will be the six towns of refuge that you give for the killer to flee to, and besides them you will give forty-two towns. 7 All the towns that you give the Levites will be forty-eight towns, them and their open land. 8 As for the towns that you give from the holding of the children of Israel: from the large people you will take many, and from the small you will take few. Each will give some of his towns to the Levites in proportion to the holding he inherits." 9 And Shema spoke with Moses, saying: 10 "Speak with the children of Israel and tell them: When you cross the Jordan into the land of Canaan, 11 you will appoint towns for yourselves to be towns of refuge for you, so that a killer who kills a person by mistake may flee there. 12 The towns will be a refuge for you from the redeemer, so that the killer is not put to death until he stands before the congregation for judgment. 13 The towns that you give will be six towns of refuge for you. 14 You will give three towns on the far side of the Jordan and give three towns in the land of Canaan; they will be towns of refuge. 15 For the children of Israel, and for the stranger and the settler among them, these six towns will be a refuge, so that anyone who kills a person by mistake may flee there. 16 But if he struck him with an iron instrument and he died, he is a killer; the killer must be put to death. 17 If he struck him with a hand stone that can kill, and he died, he is a killer; the killer must be put to death. 18 If he struck him with a hand instrument of wood that can kill, and he died, he is a killer; the killer must be put to death. 19 The blood redeemer himself will kill the killer; when he meets him, he will kill him. 20 If he pushed him out of hatred, or threw [something] at him from ambush, and he died, 21 or struck him with his hand in enmity, and he died, the one who struck him must be put to death; he is a killer. The blood redeemer will kill the killer when he meets him. 22 But if he pushed him suddenly, without enmity, or threw any instrument at him without ambush, 23 or [dropped] any stone that can kill, without seeing, and it fell on him and he died, though he was not his enemy and was not seeking to harm him, 24 the congregation will decide between the one who struck and the blood redeemer according to these rulings. 25 The congregation will rescue the one who struck from the hand of the blood redeemer, and the congregation will bring him back to his town of refuge to which he fled, and he will live in it until the death of the high priest whom the congregation anointed with the holy oil. 26 But if the killer ever goes out beyond the border of his town of refuge to which he fled, 27 and the blood redeemer finds him outside the border of his town of refuge, and the blood redeemer kills the killer, there is no blood [guilt] on him. 28 For he must live in his town of refuge until the death of the high priest; after the death of the high priest the killer will return to the land of his holding. 29 These will be a decree of law for you throughout your generations in all your dwellings. 30 Whoever kills a person, the killer will be put to death on the word of witnesses; but one witness will not testify against a person to have him put to death. 31 You will not accept a ransom for the life of a killer who is liable to be put to death; he must be put to death. 32 You will not accept a ransom for one who has fled to his town of refuge, to let him return to live in the land before the death of the high priest. 33 You will not defile the land in which you live, for it is blood that defiles the land, and the land cannot be cleansed of the blood shed in it except by the blood of the one who shed it. 34 You will not make the land you live in unclean, the land in whose midst I dwell, for I, Shema, dwell among the children of Israel."
1 The heads of the fathers' [houses] of the family of the sons of Gilead son of Machir son of Manasseh, of the families of the sons of Joseph, came forward and spoke before Moses and before the chiefs, the heads of the fathers' [houses] of the children of Israel. 2 They said, "Shema commanded my master to give the land as a share by lot to the children of Israel, and my master was commanded by Shema to give the share of Zelophehad our brother to his daughters. 3 If they become wives to one of the sons of the [other] tribes of the children of Israel, their share will be cut off from the share of our fathers and added to the share of the tribe they will belong to, and it will be cut off from the lot of our share. 4 And when the jubilee of the children of Israel comes, their share will be added to the share of the tribe they belong to, and their share will be cut off from the share of the tribe of our fathers." 5 Moses commanded the children of Israel at the word of Shema, saying, "The tribe of the sons of Joseph speaks well. 6 This is the thing Shema has commanded for the daughters of Zelophehad: Let them become wives to whoever is good in their eyes, but only within the family of their father's tribe are they to become wives. 7 No share of the children of Israel will pass around from tribe to tribe, for the children of Israel are to cling, each one, to the share of his fathers' tribe. 8 Every daughter who inherits a share among the tribes of the children of Israel is to become the wife of one from the family of her father's tribe, so that the children of Israel may each inherit the share of his fathers. 9 No share will pass around from one tribe to another tribe, for the tribes of the children of Israel are to cling, each one, to his own share." 10 As Shema commanded Moses, so the daughters of Zelophehad did. 11 Mahlah, Noah, Hoglah, Milcah and Tirzah, the daughters of Zelophehad, became wives to the sons of their uncles. 12 They became wives within the families of the sons of Manasseh son of Joseph, and their share remained with the tribe of their father's family. 13 These are the commandments and the rulings that Shema commanded through Moses for the children of Israel in the valley of Moab by the Jordan of Jericho.
