1 And these are the names of the sons of Israel who went into Egypt with Jacob; each man went in with his household: 2 Reuben and Simeon, Levi and Judah, 3 Issachar and Zebulun and Benjamin, 4 Dan and Naphtali, Gad and Asher. 5 And all the persons who came from Jacob's loins numbered seventy, and Joseph was in Egypt. 6 And Joseph died, and all his brothers, and that whole generation. 7 And the children of Israel were fruitful and swarmed and multiplied, and grew stronger and stronger, and the land was filled with them. 8 And a new king rose over the Egyptians who did not know Joseph. 9 And he said to his people, "Look, the people of the children of Israel are more numerous and stronger than we are. 10 Come, let us act shrewdly toward them, so that they do not multiply, and when war comes upon us they also join our enemies and fight against us and go up from the land." 11 And they set chiefs of forced labor over them to oppress them with their burdens, and they built walled cities for Pharaoh, Pithom and Rameses. 12 But the more they oppressed them, the more they were fruitful and the more they spread, and [the Egyptians] were distressed before the children of Israel. 13 And the Egyptians made the children of Israel work harshly. 14 And they made their lives bitter with hard labor, in clay and in bricks and in every kind of work in the field, with all the labor they harshly forced on them. 15 And the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, the name of one of whom was Shiphrah and the name of the second Puah, 16 and he said, "When you deliver the Hebrew women and see them on the birthing stones, if it is a son, kill him, and if it is a daughter, let her live." 17 But the midwives were afraid before God, and did not do as the king of the Egyptians had told them, and they kept the children alive. 18 And Pharaoh called the midwives and said to them, "Why have you done this thing and kept the children alive?" 19 And the midwives said to Pharaoh, "Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women; they are full of life, and before the midwife comes to them they have given birth." 20 And God did good to the midwives, and the people multiplied and grew very strong. 21 And because the midwives feared God, he made households for them. 22 And Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying, "Every son born to the Hebrews you shall throw into the river, and every daughter you shall keep alive."
1 And a man from the house of Levi went and took a daughter of Levi. 2 And the woman conceived and bore a son, and she saw that he was good, and she hid him for three months. 3 And when she could no longer hide him, his mother took a basket of rushes for him and coated it with mud and pitch, and she put the child in it and placed it among the reeds on the bank of the river. 4 And his sister stationed herself at a distance to learn what would be done to him. 5 And Pharaoh's daughter went down to bathe at the river, and she saw the basket among the reeds and sent her maidservant, and she took it. 6 And she opened it and saw the child, and there was a boy crying, and Pharaoh's daughter had compassion on him and said, "This is one of the children of the Hebrews." 7 And his sister said to Pharaoh's daughter, "Shall I go and call a nursing woman from the Hebrew women for you, to nurse the child for you?" 8 And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, "Go." And the girl went and called the child's mother. 9 And Pharaoh's daughter said to her, "Take this child away and nurse him for me, and I will pay your wages." And the woman took the child and nursed him. 10 When the boy grew up, she brought him to Pharaoh's daughter, and he became a son to her. She named him Moses, saying, "Because I drew him out of the water." 11 And in those days, when Moses had grown up, he went out to his brothers and saw their burdens, and he saw an Egyptian man striking a Hebrew man, one of his brothers. 12 And he looked this way and that, and saw that there was no one, and he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand. 13 And he went out on the second day, and there were two Hebrew men quarreling, and he said to the offender, "Why are you striking your neighbor?" 14 He said, "Who appointed you a chief and an arbiter over us? Are you planning to kill me the way you killed the Egyptian?" Moses was afraid and said, "So the matter is known." 15 And Pharaoh heard about this matter and sought to kill Moses, and Moses fled from before Pharaoh and lived in the land of Midian, and he sat down by the well. 16 And the priest of Midian had seven daughters, and they came and drew water and filled the troughs to water their father's flock. 17 And the shepherds came and drove them off, and Moses got up and rescued them and watered their flock. 18 And they came to Reuel their father, and he said, "Why have you hurried to come home today?" 19 And they said, "An Egyptian man rescued us from the hand of the shepherds, and he even drew water for us and watered the flock." 20 And he said to his daughters, "And where is he? Why have you left the man behind? Call him, and let him eat bread." 21 And Moses agreed to live with the man, and he gave his daughter Zipporah to Moses as a wife. 22 And she bore a son and named him Gershom, for he said, "I have been a stranger in a foreign land." 23 And in the course of those many days the king of the Egyptians died, and the children of Israel groaned from the bondage and cried out, and their plea went up to God from the bondage. 24 And God heard their outcry, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham and with Isaac and with Jacob. 25 And God saw the children of Israel, and God knew [them].
1 And Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he drove the flock to the far side of the wilderness and came to the mountain of God, to Horeb. 2 And the angel of Shema appeared to him in a flame of fire from inside the bush, and he looked, and there was the bush burning with fire, yet the bush was not being consumed. 3 And Moses said, "Let me turn aside and see this great sight, why the bush does not burn up." 4 And God saw that he had turned aside to look, and God called to him from inside the bush and said, "Moses, Moses." And he said, "Here I am." 5 And he said, "Do not come near here. Take your sandals off your feet, for the place you are standing on is holy ground." 6 He said, "I am your fathers' God, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob." Then Moses covered his face, because he was afraid to look at God. 7 And Shema said, "I have clearly seen the oppression of my people who are in Egypt, and I have heard their cry because of their overseers, for I know their pains. 8 And I have come down to rescue them from the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them up from that land to a good and spacious land, to a land flowing with milk and honey, to the place of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Girgashite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite. 9 And now, the cry of the children of Israel has reached me, and I have also seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them. 10 And now go, and I will send you to Pharaoh, and bring my people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt." 11 Moses replied to God, "Who am I to go to Pharaoh and to bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?" 12 And he said, "I will be with you, and this is the sign for you that I have sent you: when you bring the people out of Egypt, you will serve God on this mountain." 13 And Moses said to God, "Suppose I come to the children of Israel and say to them, 'The God of your fathers has sent me to you,' and they say to me, 'What is his name?' What shall I say to them?" 14 And God said to Moses, "I Am Who I Am." And he said, "This is what you shall say to the children of Israel: 'I Am has sent me to you.'" 15 God also said to Moses, "Say this to the children of Israel: 'Shema, your fathers' God, God of Abraham, God of Isaac and God of Jacob, has sent me to you.' This name is mine forever, and by it I am to be remembered in every generation. 16 Go and gather the elders of the children of Israel and say to them, 'Shema, the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, has appeared to me, saying, "I have indeed remembered you and what has been done to you in Egypt, 17 and I have said: I will bring you up out of the oppression of the Egyptians to the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, the Amorite, the Perizzite, the Girgashite, the Hivite, and the Jebusite, to a land flowing with milk and honey."' 18 And they will listen to your voice, and you will go in, you and the elders of Israel, to the king of the Egyptians, and you will say to him, 'Shema, the God of the Hebrews, has met with us. Let us go, please, a three days' journey into the wilderness and sacrifice to Shema our God.' 19 And I know that the king of Egypt will not let you go, except by a strong hand. 20 And I will stretch out my hand and slay the Egyptians with all my wonders that I will do among them, and after that he will send you away. 21 And I will give this people favor in the eyes of the Egyptians, and when you go, you will not go empty-handed. 22 And each man shall ask of his fellow, and each woman of her fellow, her neighbor and the woman lodging in her house, articles of silver and articles of gold and clothing, and you will put them on your sons and on your daughters, and you will strip the Egyptians bare."
1 And Moses answered and said, "But look, they will not trust me or listen to my voice, for they will say, 'Shema has not revealed himself to you.'" 2 And Shema said to him, "What is this in your hand?" And he said, "A staff." 3 And he said, "Throw it to the ground." And he threw it to the ground, and it became a snake, and Moses ran from before it. 4 And Shema said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand and grab [it] by its tail." And he stretched out his hand and took firm hold of it, and it became a staff in his palm. 5 "So that they may trust that Shema, God of their fathers, God of Abraham, God of Isaac and God of Jacob, has revealed himself to you." 6 And Shema said to him again, "Put your hand into your bosom, please." And he put his hand into his bosom and brought it out of his bosom, and look, his hand was leprous like snow. 7 And he said, "Put your hand back into your bosom." And he put his hand back into his bosom and brought it out of his bosom, and look, it had become again like his flesh. 8 "And if they do not trust you and do not listen to the voice of the first sign, they will trust the voice of the later sign. 9 And if they do not trust even these two signs and do not listen to your voice, you will take some of the water of the river and pour it on the dry ground, and the water that you take from the river will become blood on the dry ground." 10 And Moses said to Shema, "Please, my Lord, I am not a man of words, not yesterday, not the day before, and not since you spoke with your servant; for I am heavy of mouth and heavy of tongue." 11 And Shema said to him, "Who set a mouth in a human being? Or who makes [one] speak or be silent, see or be blind? Is it not I, Shema? 12 So now go, and I will be with your mouth and teach you what you are to speak." 13 And he said, "Please, my Lord, send, please, by the hand [of whomever] you will send." 14 And the anger of Shema grew strong against Moses, and he said, "Is not Aaron your brother the Levite? I know that he can indeed speak. And look, he is also coming out to meet you, and he will see you and rejoice in his heart. 15 You will speak with him and place the words in his mouth; I will be with your mouth and with his, and will teach you what you are to do. 16 And he will speak for you with the people, and he will serve you for speaking, and you will be as God to him. 17 And this staff you will take in your hand, with which you will do the signs." 18 And Moses went and returned to Jethro his father-in-law and said to him, "Let me go, please, and return to my kinsmen who are in Egypt, and see whether they are still living." And Jethro said to Moses, "Go in peace." 19 And Shema said to Moses in Midian, "Go back to Egypt, for all the men who sought your life have died." 20 And Moses took his wife and his sons and mounted them on the donkey and returned [to] the land of Egypt; and Moses took the staff of God in his hand. 21 And Shema said to Moses, "As you go to return to Egypt, see all the wonders that I have put in your hand, and do them before Pharaoh; and I will harden his heart, and he will not send the people away. 22 And you will say to Pharaoh, 'This is what Shema says: Israel is my son, my firstborn. 23 And I said to you, "Send my son away so that he may serve me," and you refused to send him away. Look, I am killing your son, your firstborn.'" 24 And it happened on the way, at the lodging place, that Shema met him and sought to put him to death. 25 And Zipporah took a flint and with [it] cut off the foreskin of her son and brought [it] near to his feet, and she said, "Surely you are a bridegroom of blood to me." 26 And he let go of him. Then she said, "A bridegroom of blood, for the circumcision." 27 And Shema said to Aaron, "Go to meet Moses in the wilderness." And he went and met him at the mountain of God and kissed him. 28 And Moses told Aaron all the words of Shema who had sent him, and all the signs that he had commanded him. 29 And Moses and Aaron went and gathered all the elders of the children of Israel. 30 And Aaron spoke all the words that Shema had spoken with Moses, and he did the signs before the eyes of the people. 31 The people trusted, and they heard that Shema had remembered the children of Israel and had seen their affliction; and they bowed and prostrated themselves.
1 And afterward Moses and Aaron went in and said to Pharaoh, "This is what Shema the God of Israel says: Send my people away so that they may hold a festival for me in the wilderness." 2 And Pharaoh said, "Who is Shema, that I should listen to his voice and send Israel away? I do not know Shema, and I will not send Israel away either." 3 And they said, "The God of the Hebrews has met with us. Let us go, please, into the wilderness, a journey of three days, and sacrifice to Shema our God, so that he does not strike us with plague or with the sword." 4 And the king of the Egyptians said to them, "Why, Moses and Aaron, do you pull the people away from their works? Go to your burdens." 5 And Pharaoh said, "Look, they are now more numerous than the people of the land, and you are making them stop their burdens." 6 And on that day Pharaoh commanded the overseers among the people and its scribes, saying, 7 "You will no longer give straw to the people for making bricks as yesterday and the day before; let them go and gather straw for themselves. 8 And the amount of bricks that they were making yesterday and the day before, you will lay on them; you will not reduce it, for they are lazy. That is why they cry out, saying, 'Let us go, let us sacrifice to our God.' 9 Let the work weigh heavy on the men, and let them be busy with it and not busy themselves with false words." 10 And the overseers of the people and its scribes went out and spoke with the people, saying, "This is what Pharaoh says: I am not giving you straw. 11 You, go, take straw for yourselves from wherever you find [it], for nothing at all is reduced from your service." 12 And the people scattered through all the land of the Egyptians to gather stubble for straw. 13 And the overseers were pressing the people, saying, "Complete your works, each day's task on its day, as when straw was being given to you." 14 And the scribes of the children of Israel, whom Pharaoh's overseers had set over them, were beaten, [the overseers] saying, "Why have you not completed your quota for making bricks as yesterday and the day before, both yesterday and today?" 15 And the scribes of the children of Israel went in and cried out to Pharaoh, saying, "Why do you act this way toward your servants? 16 Straw is not being given to your servants, and as for bricks, they say to us, 'Make [them],' and look, your servants are beaten, and the fault [lies with] your people." 17 And he said, "You are lazy, lazy! That is why you say, 'Let us go and sacrifice to Shema.' 18 And now go, work; straw will not be given to you, yet you will deliver the amount of bricks." 19 And the scribes of the children of Israel saw them in trouble, as they were told, "Nothing will be reduced from your bricks, each day's task on its day." 20 And they met Moses and Aaron, who were standing to meet them as they came out from Pharaoh's presence. 21 And they said to them, "May Shema look upon you and judge, for you have made our scent foul in the eyes of Pharaoh and in the eyes of his servants, putting a sword in his hand to kill us." 22 And Moses returned to Shema and said, "My Lord, why have you done harm to this people? Why is it that you sent me? 23 For since I went in to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has done harm to this people, and you have not rescued your people at all."
1 And Shema said to Moses: "You will see what I will do to Pharaoh; for with a strong hand he will send them away, and with a strong hand he will drive them out of his land." 2 And Shema spoke with Moses and said to him: "I am Shema. 3 And I revealed myself to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob as El Shaddai, but by my name Shema I did not make myself known to them. 4 And I also established my covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan, the land where they lived as settlers, in which they settled. 5 And I too have heard the groaning of the children of Israel, whom the Egyptians are enslaving, and I have remembered my covenant. 6 So say to the children of Israel: 'I am Shema. I will bring you out from beneath the burdens of the Egyptians, rescue you from their service, and redeem you with an outstretched arm and with great judgments. 7 And I will take you to myself as a people, and I will be your God, and you will know that I am Shema your God, who brings you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. 8 I will bring you into the land that I raised my hand to give to Abraham, Isaac and Jacob, and I will give it to you as an inheritance. I am Shema.'" 9 And Moses spoke this way with the children of Israel, but they did not listen to Moses, because their spirit was crushed and their labor was hard. And they said to Moses: "Leave us alone, please, and let us serve the Egyptians! For it is better for us to serve the Egyptians than for us to die in the wilderness." 10 And Shema spoke with Moses, saying: 11 "Go in, speak with Pharaoh king of the Egyptians, and he will send the children of Israel out of his land." 12 And Moses spoke before Shema, saying: "See, the children of Israel have not listened to me, so how will Pharaoh listen to me, when my lips falter?" 13 And Shema spoke with Moses and with Aaron and gave them orders concerning the children of Israel and concerning Pharaoh king of Egypt, to bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt. 14 And these are the heads of their fathers' house. The sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel: Hanoch and Pallu, Hezron and Carmi; these are the families of Reuben. 15 And the sons of Simeon: Jemuel and Jamin and Ohad and Jachin and Zohar, and Shaul the son of the Canaanite woman; these are the families of Simeon. 16 And these are the names of the sons of Levi by their generations: Gershon, Kohath and Merari; and the years of Levi's life were a hundred and thirty-seven years. 17 And the sons of Gershon: Libni and Shimei, by their families. 18 And the sons of Kohath: Amram and Izhar, Hebron and Uzziel; and the years of Kohath's life were a hundred and thirty-three years. 19 And the sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi; these are the families of the Levites by their generations. 20 And Amram took Jochebed, his aunt, as his wife, and she bore him Aaron and Moses and Miriam their sister; and the years of Amram's life were a hundred and thirty-six years. 21 And the sons of Izhar: Korah and Nepheg and Zichri. 22 And the sons of Uzziel: Mishael and Elizaphan and Sithri. 23 And Aaron took Elisheba, daughter of Amminadab and sister of Nahshon, as his wife, and she bore him Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar. 24 And the sons of Korah: Assir and Elkanah and Abiasaph; these are the families of the Korahites. 25 And Eleazar son of Aaron took one of the daughters of Putiel as his wife, and she bore him Phinehas. These are the heads of the fathers of the Levites by their families. 26 This is the Aaron and Moses to whom Shema said: "Bring the children of Israel out of the land of the Egyptians by their hosts." 27 They are the ones who spoke with Pharaoh king of Egypt to bring the children of Israel out of the land of the Egyptians; this is Moses and Aaron. 28 And it happened on the day that Shema spoke with Moses in the land of Egypt, 29 that Shema spoke with Moses, saying: "I am Shema; speak with Pharaoh king of the Egyptians all that I am speaking with you." 30 And Moses said before Shema: "See, my lips falter, so how will Pharaoh listen to me?"
1 And Shema said to Moses: "See, I have set you as God to Pharaoh, and Aaron your brother will be your prophet. 2 You will speak all that I command you, and Aaron your brother will speak with Pharaoh, and he will send the children of Israel out of his land. 3 And I will harden Pharaoh's heart and multiply my signs and my wonders in the land of the Egyptians. 4 And Pharaoh will not listen to you, and I will set my hand on Egypt and bring out my hosts, my people the children of Israel, from the land of the Egyptians with great judgments. 5 And all the Egyptians will know that I am Shema, when I stretch out my hand over the Egyptians and bring my people, the children of Israel, out from among them." 6 And Moses and Aaron did as Shema commanded them; that is what they did. 7 And Moses was eighty years old, and Aaron eighty-three years old, when they spoke with Pharaoh. 8 And Shema spoke with Moses and with Aaron, saying: 9 "When Pharaoh speaks with you, saying, 'Produce a sign or a wonder for yourselves,' you will say to Aaron, 'Take your rod and throw [it] down before Pharaoh, and it will become a serpent.'" 10 And Moses and Aaron went in before Pharaoh and did so, as Shema had commanded, and Aaron threw his rod down before Pharaoh and before his servants, and it became a serpent. 11 And Pharaoh too summoned his magicians and his diviners, and they too, the magicians of the Egyptians, did the same with their magic. 12 And each man threw down his rod, and they became serpents, and Aaron's rod swallowed their rods. 13 And Pharaoh's heart grew hard, and he did not listen to them, as Shema had spoken. 14 And Shema spoke with Moses: "Pharaoh's heart is closed; he refuses to send my people away. 15 Go to Pharaoh in the morning; see, he is going out to the water, and you will station yourself to meet him on the bank of the river, and you will take in your hand the rod that was turned into a snake. 16 And you will say to him: 'Shema, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me to you, saying: Send my people away so they will serve me in the wilderness; and see, you have not listened until now. 17 Thus says Shema: By this you will know that I am Shema: see, I am striking with the rod that is in my hand on the water that is in the river, and it will be turned into blood. 18 The fish in the river will die, the river will stink, and the Egyptians will grow weary of drinking water from the river.'" Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and told him: "Shema, the God of the Hebrews, sent us to you with this message: 'Send my people away so they will serve me in the wilderness; and see, until now you have not listened.' This is what Shema says: 'By this you will know that I am Shema: see, I am striking the water in the river with the rod in my hand, and it will turn into blood; the fish in the river will die, the river will stink, and the Egyptians will grow weary of drinking water.'" 19 And Shema said to Moses: "Say to Aaron: 'Take your rod and stretch out your hand over the waters of the Egyptians, over their rivers, over their channels, over their pools and over every gathering of their waters, and they will become blood; and there will be blood in all the land of the Egyptians, in [vessels of] wood and in [vessels of] stone.'" 20 And Moses and Aaron did so, as Shema had commanded, and he lifted up the rod, and they struck the water that was in the river before the eyes of Pharaoh and before the eyes of his servants, and all the water that was in the river was turned into blood. 21 And the fish that were in the river died, and the river stank, and the Egyptians could not drink water from the river; and there was blood in all the land of the Egyptians. 22 And the magicians of Egypt did the same with their magic, and Pharaoh's heart grew hard, and he did not listen to them, as Shema had spoken. 23 And Pharaoh turned and went into his house, and did not set his heart even on this. 24 And all the Egyptians dug around the river for water to drink, for they could not drink from the water of the river. 25 And seven days were completed after Shema had struck down the river. 26 And Shema said to Moses: "Go in to Pharaoh and speak with him: 'Thus says Shema: Send my people away so they will serve me. 27 And if you refuse to send [them] away, see, I am striking all your territory with frogs, 28 and the river will swarm with frogs, and they will come up and enter your houses and your bedrooms and onto your beds, and into the houses of your servants and among your people, and into your ovens and into your kneading troughs, 29 and the frogs will come up on you and on your people and on all your servants.'" And Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh and spoke with him: "Thus says Shema: 'Send my people away so they will serve me. And if you refuse to send [them] away, see, I am striking all your territory with frogs, and the river will swarm with frogs, and they will come up and enter your houses and your bedrooms and onto your beds, and into the houses of your servants and among your people, and into your ovens and into your kneading troughs, and the frogs will come up on you and on your people and on all your servants.'"
1 And Shema said to Moses, "Tell Aaron: Stretch out your hand with your staff over the rivers, over the channels and over the marshes, and bring the frogs up over the land of Egypt." And Moses said to Aaron, "Stretch out your hand with your staff and bring the frogs up over the land of Egypt." 2 Aaron stretched his hand out over Egypt's waters, and the frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt. 3 And the sorcerers of Egypt did the same with their sorceries and brought the frogs up over the land of the Egyptians. 4 And Pharaoh cried out to Moses and Aaron and said, "Pray to Shema to turn the frogs away from me and from my people, and I will let the people go, and they will sacrifice to Shema." 5 And Moses said to Pharaoh, "Name it to me: for when shall I pray for you, for your servants and for your people, to root the frogs out from you and from your houses, from your servants and from your people? They will remain only in the river." 6 And he said, "Tomorrow." And he said, "As you have said, so that you will know that there is none like Shema our God. 7 And the frogs will turn away from you and from your houses, from your servants and from your people; they will remain only in the river." 8 And Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh's presence, and Moses cried out to Shema about the matter of the frogs that he had set against Pharaoh. 9 And Shema did as Moses had said, and the frogs died out of the houses, the courtyards and the fields. 10 And they piled them up in heaps upon heaps, and the land stank. 11 And Pharaoh saw that there was relief, and he closed up his heart and did not listen to them, as Shema had said. 12 And Shema said to Moses, "Tell Aaron: Stretch out your hand with your staff and strike the dust of the ground, and it will become lice in all the land of the Egyptians." 13 And they did so: Aaron stretched out his hand with his staff and struck the dust of the ground, and the lice were on people and on animals. All the dust of the ground became lice in all the land of Egypt. 14 And the sorcerers did the same with their sorceries to bring out the lice, but they could not; and the lice were on people and on animals. 15 And the sorcerers said to Pharaoh, "It is the finger of God." But Pharaoh's heart grew strong, and he did not listen to them, as Shema had said. 16 And Shema said to Moses, "Rise early in the morning and present yourself before Pharaoh. See, he is going out to the water. And say to him: Thus says Shema, Let my people go, and they will serve me. 17 For if you do not let my people go, I am sending the ravens against you, your servants, your people and your houses, and the houses of the Egyptians will be filled with the ravens, and also the ground they stand on. 18 And on that day I will set apart the land of Goshen, where my people live, so that there will be no ravens there, so that you will know that I am Shema in the midst of the land. 19 And I will put a deliverance between my people and your people. Tomorrow this sign will be." And Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh and said to him, "Thus says Shema: Let my people go, and they will serve me. For if you do not let my people go, I am sending the ravens against you, your servants, your people and your houses, and the houses of the Egyptians will be filled with the ravens, and also the ground they stand on. And on that day I will set apart the land of Goshen, where my people live, so that there will be no ravens there, so that you will know that I am Shema in the midst of the land. And I will put a deliverance between my people and your people. Tomorrow this sign will be." 20 And Shema did so, and a very heavy [swarm of] ravens came into Pharaoh's house and his servants' house, in all the land of Egypt, and the land was ruined because of the ravens. 21 And Pharaoh cried out to Moses and Aaron and said, "Go, sacrifice to your God in the land." 22 And Moses said, "It is not right for us to do so, for it is what the Egyptians abhor that we sacrifice to Shema our God. If we sacrifice what the Egyptians abhor before their eyes, will they not stone us? 23 We will go a three days' journey into the wilderness and sacrifice to Shema our God, as he tells us." 24 And Pharaoh said, "I will let you go, and you will sacrifice to Shema your God in the wilderness; only you must not go far off as you go. Pray for me." 25 And Moses said, "See, I am going out from you, and I will pray before Shema, and he will turn the ravens away from Pharaoh, from his servants and from his people. Only let Pharaoh not lie again by refusing to let the people go to sacrifice to Shema." 26 [Brüll's text lacks this verse.] 27 And Shema did as Moses had said, and the ravens turned away from Pharaoh, from his servants and from his people; not one was left. 28 And Pharaoh closed up his heart this time too, and he did not let the people go.
1 Shema said to Moses, "Go in to Pharaoh and tell him: This is what Shema, the God of the Hebrews, says: Let my people go, and they will serve me. 2 For if you refuse to let [them] go and keep holding on to them, 3 see, the hand of Shema will be on your livestock in the field, on the horses, the donkeys, the camels, the cattle and the sheep: a very heavy pestilence. 4 And Shema will set apart the livestock of Israel from the livestock of the Egyptians, and not a thing will die of all that belongs to the children of Israel." 5 And Shema set a time, saying, "Tomorrow Shema will do this thing in the land." And Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh and said to him, "Thus says Shema, the God of the Hebrews: Let my people go, and they will serve me. For if you refuse to let [them] go and keep holding on to them, see, the hand of Shema will be on your livestock in the field, on the horses, the donkeys, the camels, the cattle and the sheep: a very heavy pestilence. And Shema will set apart the livestock of Israel from the livestock of the Egyptians, and not a thing will die of all that belongs to the children of Israel. Tomorrow Shema will do this thing." 6 On the next day all the livestock of Egypt died, but of the livestock of the children of Israel not one died. 7 And Pharaoh sent, and see, not even one of the livestock of the children of Israel had died. But Pharaoh's heart was heavy, and he did not let the people go. 8 And Shema said to Moses and Aaron, "Take your handfuls full of furnace soot, and let Moses throw it skyward before Pharaoh's eyes. 9 And it will become dust over all the land of Egypt, and it will be on people and on animals as boils breaking out in blisters in all the land of Egypt." 10 And they took the furnace soot and stood before Pharaoh, and Moses threw it skyward, and it became boils breaking out in blisters on people and on animals. 11 And the sorcerers could not stand before Moses because of the boils, for the boils were on the sorcerers and on all the Egyptians. 12 And Shema made Pharaoh's heart strong, and he did not listen to them, as Shema had told Moses. 13 Shema said to Moses, "Rise early in the morning, present yourself before Pharaoh and tell him: This is what Shema, the God of the Hebrews, says: Let my people go, and they will serve me. 14 For this time I am sending all my plagues on your heart, on your servants and on your people, so that you will know that there is none like me in all the earth. 15 For by now I could have sent out my hand and killed you and your people by a word, and you would have perished from the earth. 16 But for this reason I have raised you up: to show you my strength, and so that my name will be told throughout the earth. 17 You are still exalting yourself against my people, refusing to let them go. 18 See, about this time tomorrow I am raining down a very heavy hail, the like of which has not been in Egypt from the day it was founded until now. 19 So now send, bring your livestock and all you have in the field to safety: every person and animal found in the field and not gathered into the house, the hail will come down on them, and they will die." And Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh and said to him, "Thus says Shema, the God of the Hebrews: Let my people go, and they will serve me. For this time I am sending all my plagues on your heart, on your servants and on your people, so that you will know that there is none like me in all the earth. For by now I could have sent out my hand and killed you and your people by a word, and you would have perished from the earth. But for this reason I have raised you up: to show you my strength, and so that my name will be told throughout the earth. You are still exalting yourself against my people, refusing to let them go. See, about this time tomorrow I am raining down a very heavy hail, the like of which has not been in Egypt from the day it was founded until now. So now send, bring your livestock and all you have in the field to safety: every person and animal found in the field and not gathered into the house, the hail will come down on them, and they will die." 20 Whoever among Pharaoh's servants feared the word of Shema made his servants and his livestock flee into the houses, 21 but whoever did not set his heart on the word of Shema left his servants and his livestock in the field. 22 And Shema said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand toward the sky, and there will be hail in all the land of Egypt, on people and on animals and on every plant of the field in the land of the Egyptians." 23 And Moses stretched out his staff toward the sky, and Shema sent thunder and hail, and fire ran down to the ground, and Shema rained hail on the land of the Egyptians. 24 And there was hail, and fire flaring up within the hail, very heavy, the like of which had not been in Egypt since it became a nation. 25 And in the land of the Egyptians the hail killed everything in the field, from people to animals; the hail struck every plant of the field and broke every tree of the field. 26 Only in the land of Goshen, where the children of Israel [were], there was no hail. 27 And Pharaoh sent and called Moses and Aaron and said to them, "I have sinned this time. Shema is in the right, and I and my people are in the wrong. 28 Pray to Shema, and let there be enough of the thunder of God and the hail, and I will let you go, and you will not stay any longer." 29 And Moses said to him, "When I go out of the city, I will spread out my palms to Shema; the thunder will stop and there will be no more hail, so that you will know that the earth belongs to Shema. 30 But you and your servants, I know that you do not yet fear before the Lord Shema." 31 And the flax and the barley were struck, for the barley was in the ear and the flax was in bloom. 32 But the wheat and the spelt were not struck, for they were still tender. 33 And Moses went out from Pharaoh's presence, out of the city, and spread out his palms to Shema, and the thunder and the hail stopped, and the rain no longer dripped onto the earth. 34 And Pharaoh saw that the hail, the rain and the thunder had stopped, and he sinned again and made his heart heavy, he and his servants. 35 And Pharaoh's heart grew strong, and he did not let the children of Israel go, as Shema had spoken through Moses.
1 And Shema said to Moses, "Go to Pharaoh, for I have dulled his heart and the heart of his servants, so that I may set these signs of mine in his midst, 2 and so that you may recount in the hearing of your son and your son's son how I dealt with the Egyptians, and my signs that I set among them, and you will know that I am Shema your God. And say to Pharaoh, 'Thus says Shema, the God of the Hebrews: How long will you refuse to humble yourself before me? Release my people, so that they may serve me. For if you refuse to release my people, see, tomorrow I am bringing locusts into your territory, and they will cover the surface of the land, and no one will be able to see the land; and they will eat all the remainder of what escaped, what was left to you from the hail, and they will eat all the grass of the land and all the fruit of the trees that grows for you from the field. And your houses will be full, and the houses of all your servants and the houses of all the Egyptians, such as your fathers and your fathers' fathers have not seen from the day they came to be on the earth until this day.'" 3 Moses and Aaron came in to Pharaoh and told him, "This is what Shema, the God of the Hebrews, says: How long will you refuse to be humbled before me? Release my people, so that they may serve me. 4 For if you refuse to release my people, see, tomorrow I am bringing locusts into your territory, 5 and they will cover the surface of the land, and no one will be able to see the land; and they will eat the remainder of what escaped, what was left to you from the hail, and they will eat all the grass of the land and all the fruit of the trees that grows for you from the field. 6 And your houses will be full, and the houses of all your servants and the houses of all the Egyptians, such as your fathers and your fathers' fathers have not seen from the day they came to be on the earth until this day." And he turned and went out from Pharaoh's presence. 7 And Pharaoh's servants said to him, "How long will this be a trap to us? Release the men, so that they may serve Shema their God. Do you not yet know that Egypt is lost?" 8 And Moses and Aaron were brought back to Pharaoh, and he said to them, "Go, serve Shema your God. Who exactly are the ones going?" 9 And Moses said, "We will go with our young and with our old; we will go with our sons and our daughters, with our sheep and our cattle, for it is a festival of Shema for us." 10 And he said to them, "So may Shema be with you, as I release you and your little ones! See, evil is before your faces. 11 Therefore go, please, you men, and serve Shema, for that is what you are seeking." And they drove them out from Pharaoh's presence. 12 And Shema said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts, and let them come up over the land of the Egyptians and eat all the grass of the land and all the fruit of the trees that the hail has left." 13 And Moses stretched out his hand over the land of Egypt, and Shema drove an east wind into the land all that day and all the night. Morning came, and the east wind carried the locusts. 14 And the locusts came up over all the land of Egypt and settled in all the territory of the Egyptians, very heavy. Before them there were no locusts like them, and after them there will be none so. 15 And they covered the surface of all the land, and the land grew dark, and they ate all the grass of the land [and] all the fruit of the trees that the hail had left, and nothing green was left on tree or on the grass of the field in all the land of Egypt. 16 And Pharaoh hurried to call Moses and Aaron and said, "I have sinned against Shema your God and against you. 17 And now forgive my sin, please, just this once, and pray to Shema your God that he take this death away from me, only this." 18 And he went out from Pharaoh's presence and prayed to Shema. 19 And Shema turned [it into] a very strong west wind, and it carried the locusts and thrust them into the Sea of Suf. Not a single locust remained in all the territory of Egypt. 20 And Shema made Pharaoh's heart strong, and he did not release the sons of Israel. 21 And Shema said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand toward the sky, and let there be darkness over the land of Egypt, and let the darkness be felt." 22 And Moses stretched out his hand toward the sky, and there was dense darkness in all the land of the Egyptians for three days. 23 No one saw his brother, and no one got up from his place for three days; but all the sons of Israel had light in their dwellings. 24 And Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron and said, "Go, serve Shema; only your sheep and your cattle are to be left behind. Your little ones too may go with you." 25 And Moses said, "You too will put into our hand sacrifices and burnt offerings, and we will offer [them] to Shema our God. 26 Our livestock too will go with us; not a hoof will be left, for from it we will take to serve Shema our God, and we ourselves do not know what we will serve Shema with until we arrive there." 27 And Shema made Pharaoh's heart strong, and he was not willing to release them. 28 And Pharaoh said to him, "Go, go away from me! Watch yourself: do not see my face again, for on the day you see my face you will be killed." 29 And Moses said, "You have spoken well. I will not see your face again."
1 And Shema said to Moses, "One more plague I will bring on Pharaoh and on the Egyptians, and after that he will release you from here. When he releases [you], he will drive you out from here completely. 2 Speak, please, in the hearing of the people, and let them ask, each man from his companion and each woman from her companion, vessels of silver and vessels of gold and clothing. 3 And I will give this people favor in the eyes of the Egyptians, and they will lend to them. And at midnight I am going out into the midst of the land of the Egyptians, and I will kill every firstborn in the land of the Egyptians, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sits on his throne to the firstborn of the slave woman who works the millstones, and to the firstborn of every beast. And there will be a great outcry in Egypt, the like of which has not been, and its like will not be repeated. But against all the sons of Israel no dog will wag its tongue, from man to beast, so that you may know that Shema separates between the Egyptians and Israel." And the man Moses too was very great in the land of Egypt, in the eyes of Pharaoh's servants and in the eyes of the people. 4 And Moses said to Pharaoh, "Thus says Shema: Israel is my son, my firstborn, and I said to you, 'Release my son, so that he may serve me,' and you refused to release him. See, Shema is killing your son, your firstborn." And Moses said, "Thus says Shema: At midnight I am going out into the midst of the land of Egypt, 5 and I will kill every firstborn in the land of the Egyptians, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sits on his throne to the firstborn of the slave woman who works the millstones, and to the firstborn of every beast. 6 And there will be a great outcry in Egypt, the like of which has not been, and its like will not be repeated. 7 But against all the sons of Israel no dog will wag its tongue, from man to beast, so that you may know that Shema separates between the Egyptians and Israel. 8 And all these servants of yours will come to me and bow down to me, saying, 'Go out, you and all the people who are with you,' and after that I will go out." And he went out from Pharaoh's presence in fierce anger. 9 And Shema said to Moses, "Pharaoh will not listen to you, so that my wonders may multiply in the land of Egypt." 10 And Moses and Aaron performed all these wonders before Pharaoh, and Shema made Pharaoh's heart strong, and he did not release the sons of Israel from his land.
1 And Shema said to Moses and to Aaron in the land of Egypt: 2 "This month shall be for you the head of the months; it is the first for you of the months of the year. 3 Speak with all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying: On the tenth of this month they shall take for themselves, each man, a lamb for [his] fathers' house, a lamb for [each] household. 4 And if his household is too few for a lamb, he and his neighbor who is near his house shall take [one] by the number of the persons; you shall count each man for the lamb according to what he eats. 5 A perfect lamb, a male a year old, it shall be for you; you shall take [it] from the sheep and from the goats. 6 And it shall be in your keeping until the fourteenth day of this month, and all the assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel shall slaughter it between the evenings. 7 And they shall take some of the blood and put [it] on the two doorposts and on the lintel, on the houses in which they eat it. 8 And they shall eat the flesh on this night roasted in fire, and they shall eat it as unleavened bread with bitter herbs. 9 Do not eat any of it raw, or boiled, cooked in water, but only roasted in fire, its head with its legs and with its inner parts. 10 And you shall leave none of it until morning; you shall burn [it] in fire. 11 This is how you shall eat it: with your loins girded, shoes on your feet and staffs in your hands; eat it in haste. It is a Passover to Shema. 12 And I will pass through the land of Egypt on this night and kill every firstborn in the land of Egypt, from man to beast, and on all the gods of Egypt I will carry out judgments. I am Shema. 13 And the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are, and I will see the blood and pass over you, and no plague shall be among you to destroy [you] when I kill in the land of Egypt. 14 And this day shall be a memorial for you, and you shall celebrate it as a feast to Shema throughout your generations; you shall celebrate it as a statute forever. 15 For seven days you shall eat unleavened bread; but on the first day you shall do away with leaven from your houses, for whoever eats leavened [bread], that person shall be uprooted from Israel, from the first day until the seventh day. 16 On the first day a holy gathering and on the seventh day a holy gathering shall be for you; no work shall be done on them, except what is eaten by every person, that alone shall be done for you. 17 And you shall keep the commandment, for on this very day I brought your hosts out of the land of the Egyptians; and you shall keep and observe this day throughout your generations as a statute forever. 18 In the first [month], on the fourteenth day of the month, in the evening, you shall eat unleavened bread, until the twenty-first day of the month in the evening. 19 For seven days no leaven shall be found in your houses, for whoever eats anything leavened, that person shall be uprooted from the congregation of Israel, whether sojourner or native of the land. 20 And you shall eat nothing leavened; in all your dwellings you shall eat unleavened bread." 21 And Moses called all the sages of Israel and said to them, "Draw out and take sheep for yourselves by your families, and slaughter the Passover. 22 And you shall take a bundle of hyssop and dip [it] in the blood that is in the basin, and touch the lintel and the two doorposts with the blood that is in the basin; and as for you, none of you shall go out of the door of his house until morning. 23 And Shema will pass through to strike the Egyptians, and he will see the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, and Shema will pass over the door and will not let the destroyer enter your houses to strike [you]. 24 And you shall keep this word as a statute for you and for your sons forever. 25 And when you enter the land that Shema will give you, as he has spoken, you shall keep this service in this month. 26 And when your sons say to you, 'What is this service of yours?' 27 you shall say, 'It is a Passover sacrifice to Shema, who, when he struck the Egyptians, passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt and saved our houses.'" And the people bowed and worshiped. 28 And the children of Israel went and did; as Shema had commanded Moses and Aaron, so they did. 29 And at midnight Shema killed every firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sits on his throne to the firstborn of the captive who was in the pit, and every firstborn of beast. 30 And Pharaoh rose in the night, he and all his servants and all the Egyptians, and there was a great outcry in Egypt, for there was no house where there was not a dead [person]. 31 And he called to Moses and to Aaron by night and said, "Rise, go out from among my people, both you and the children of Israel, and go, serve Shema as you have said. 32 Take both your sheep and your oxen, as you have said, and go; and bless me as well." 33 And the Egyptians pressed hard on the people, hurrying to send them out of the land, for they said, "We are all dead." 34 And the people carried their dough before it was leavened, their kneading troughs tied up in their garments on their shoulders. 35 And the children of Israel did as Moses had said, and asked the Egyptians for articles of silver and articles of gold and garments. 36 And Shema gave the people favor in the eyes of the Egyptians, and they lent to them; and they emptied the Egyptians. 37 And the children of Israel set out from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand on foot, the men, apart from the little ones. 38 And a great mixed company also went up with them, and sheep and oxen, livestock very heavy [in number]. 39 And they baked the dough that they had brought out of Egypt into cakes of unleavened bread, for it had not leavened, for the Egyptians drove them out and they could not delay, and they had not even made provisions for themselves. 40 And the dwelling of the children of Israel and their fathers, who dwelt in the land of Canaan [and] in the land of Egypt, was thirty and four hundred years. 41 And at the end of thirty and four hundred years, on this very day, all the hosts of Shema went out of the land of the Egyptians. 42 It is a night of watching for Shema, for bringing them out of the land of the Egyptians; this is the night for Shema, [a night] of watching for all the children of Israel throughout their generations. 43 And Shema said to Moses and to Aaron, "This is the statute of the Passover: no foreigner shall eat of it. 44 But every man's servant bought with his money, you shall circumcise him; then he shall eat of it. 45 A settler or a hired man shall not eat of it. 46 In one house it shall be eaten; you shall not take any of the flesh out of the house, outside, and you shall not break a bone of it. 47 All the congregation of Israel shall perform it. 48 And if a sojourner settles with you and would perform a Passover to Shema, every male of his shall be circumcised, and then he may come near to perform it, and he shall be like a native of the land; but no uncircumcised [man] shall eat of it. 49 There shall be one law for the native and for the sojourner who sojourns among you." 50 And all the children of Israel did; as Shema had commanded Moses and Aaron, so they did. 51 And on this very day Shema brought the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt by their hosts.
1 And Shema spoke with Moses, saying, 2 "Consecrate to me every firstborn, the opener of every womb among the children of Israel, of man and of beast; it is mine." 3 And Moses said to the people, "Remember this day on which you went out of the land of Egypt, out of the house of slavery, for by strength of hand Shema brought you out from here; and no leavened bread shall be eaten. 4 Today you are going out, in the month of the ripening grain. 5 When Shema your God brings you into the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite and the Amorite, the Perizzite and the Girgashite, the Hivite and the Jebusite, the land he swore to your fathers to give you, flowing with milk and honey, you shall perform this service in this month. 6 For six days you shall eat unleavened bread, and on the seventh day [there is] a feast to Shema. 7 Unleavened bread shall be eaten for the seven days; no leavened bread shall be seen with you, and no leaven shall be seen with you in all your territory. 8 And you shall tell your son on that day, saying, 'It is because of this that Shema acted for me when I came out of Egypt.' 9 And they shall be for you a sign on your hand and a memorial between your eyes, so that the law of Shema may be in your mouth, for with a strong hand Shema brought you out of Egypt. 10 And you shall keep this statute at its appointed time, year by year. 11 And when Shema your God brings you into the land of the Canaanite, as he swore to you and to your fathers, and gives it to you, 12 you shall set apart to Shema every [opener of the] womb, and every opener among the young of the livestock that you have; the males belong to Shema. 13 And every opener of a donkey you shall redeem with a lamb, and if you do not redeem it, you shall break its neck; and every firstborn of man among your sons you shall redeem. 14 And when your son asks you tomorrow, saying, 'What is this?' you shall say to him, 'By strength of hand Shema brought us out of Egypt, out of the house of slavery. 15 And when Pharaoh was stubborn about sending us away, Shema killed every firstborn in the land of the Egyptians, from the firstborn of man to the firstborn of beast. That is why I sacrifice to Shema every opener of the womb, the males, and every firstborn of man among my sons I redeem.' 16 And they shall be for you a sign on your hand and frontlets between your eyes, for by strength of hand Shema brought you out of Egypt." 17 And when Pharaoh sent the people away, God did not lead them by the road of the land of the Philistines, for it was near; for God said, "Lest the people change their minds when they see war, and return to Egypt." 18 And God led the people around by the road of the wilderness of the Sea of Suf, and the children of Israel went up armed from the land of the Egyptians. 19 And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him, for Joseph had made the children of Israel swear an oath, saying, "God will surely remember you, and you shall bring my bones up from here with you." 20 And they set out from Succoth and camped at Etham, which is at the edge of the wilderness. 21 And Shema went before them by day in a pillar of cloud to guide them on the road, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they could travel by day and by night. 22 The pillar of cloud did not cease by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.
1 And Shema spoke with Moses, saying: 2 "Speak to the children of Israel, and let them turn back and camp before Pi-Hirta, between Migdol and the sea, before Baal-zephon; facing it you shall camp by the sea. 3 And Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel, 'They are wandering confused in the land; the wilderness has closed in on them.' 4 And I will harden Pharaoh's heart, and he will pursue after them, and I will be honored through Pharaoh and through all his army, and the Egyptians will know that I am Shema." And they did so. 5 And it was told to the king of Egypt that the people had fled, and the heart of Pharaoh and his servants turned against the people, and they said, "What is this that we have done, that we sent Israel away from serving us?" 6 And he harnessed his chariotry and took his people with him. 7 And he took six hundred choice chariots, and all the chariotry of Egypt, with officers over all of it. 8 And Shema hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of the Egyptians, and he pursued after the children of Israel, while the children of Israel were going out with a raised hand. 9 And the Egyptians pursued after them and reached them as they camped by the sea, all the horses of Pharaoh's chariotry, and his horsemen and his army, at Pi-Hirta, before Baal-zephon. 10 And Pharaoh drew near in haste, and the children of Israel lifted up their eyes and looked, and there were the Egyptians setting out after them; and they were very afraid, and the children of Israel cried out to Shema. 11 And they said to Moses, "Is it because there are no graves in Egypt that you led us out to die in the wilderness? What is this you have done to us, bringing us out of Egypt? 12 Is this not the very word that we spoke with you in Egypt, saying, 'Leave us alone, please, and let us serve the Egyptians'? For it is better for us to serve the Egyptians than for us to die in the wilderness." 13 Moses said to the people, "Do not be afraid. Stand firm and see the deliverance Shema will work for you today; for the Egyptians whom you have seen today you will not see again, ever, forever. 14 Shema will wage war for you, and you will keep silent." 15 And Shema said to Moses, "Why do you cry out to me? Speak with the children of Israel, and let them set out. 16 And you, raise your staff and stretch out your hand over the sea and split it, and the children of Israel will go into the middle of the sea on dry land. 17 And I, here I am, hardening the heart of the Egyptians, and they will go in after them, and I will be honored through Pharaoh and through all his army, through his chariotry and through his horsemen. 18 And all the Egyptians will know that I am Shema, when I am honored through Pharaoh and through all his army, through his chariotry and through his horsemen." 19 And the angel of God who went before the camp of Israel set out and went behind them, and the pillar of cloud set out from in front of them and stood behind them. 20 And it came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel, and the cloud was darkness, yet it gave light along with the night, and the one did not come near the other all the night. 21 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and Shema carried the sea away with a strong east wind all the night, and turned [it] from sea into dry ground, and the waters were split. 22 And the children of Israel went into the middle of the sea on dry land, and the sea was a fortress for them on their right and on their left. 23 And the Egyptians pursued and went in after them, all Pharaoh's horses, his chariotry and his horsemen, into the middle of the sea. 24 And in the morning watch Shema looked down on the camp of the Egyptians in the pillar of fire and cloud, and threw the camp of the Egyptians into confusion. 25 And he bound the leaders of his chariots and drove it on heavily. And the Egyptians said, "Let us flee from before Israel, for Shema is the one who fights for them against Egypt." 26 And Shema said to Moses, "Stretch out your hand over the sea, and let the waters come back upon the Egyptians, upon their chariotry and upon their horsemen." 27 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to its depth at the turning of the morning, and the Egyptians were setting out to meet it, and Shema shook the Egyptians off into the middle of the sea. 28 And the waters returned and covered the chariotry and the horsemen, all the army of Pharaoh that had gone in after them into the sea; not even one of them was left. 29 And the children of Israel walked on dry land in the middle of the sea, and it was a fortress for them on their right and on their left. 30 And Shema delivered Israel on that day from the hand of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians slain on the shore of the sea. 31 And Israel saw the great hand that Shema had worked against the Egyptians, and the people feared Shema, and they believed in Shema and in Moses his servant.
1 Then Moses and the children of Israel sang this praise to Shema, and they spoke, saying, "Praise Shema, for the mighty nation, its horse and its rider, he has hurled into the sea. 2 [Shema is] my strength and my might, and he has become deliverance for me. This is my God, and I will praise him; the God of my father, and I will exalt him. 3 Shema is a warrior in battle; Shema is his name. 4 Pharaoh's chariots and his army he flung into the sea, and the choicest of his officers sank in the Sea of Suf. 5 The deeps covered them; they went down into the depths like the stones. 6 Your right hand, Shema, is mighty in power; your right hand, Shema, crushes the enemy. 7 And in the greatness of your power you strangled those who rage [against you]; you sent out your fury; it consumes them like straw. 8 And by the wind of your anger the waters were heaped up; the flowing [waters] stood upright like a mound; the deeps congealed in the heart of the sea. 9 The enemy said, 'I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the spoil, the satisfaction of my soul; I will draw my sword, my hand will seize it.' 10 You blew with your wind; the sea covered them; they sank like lead in the mighty waters. 11 Who is like you among the mighty ones, Shema? Who is like you, strong in holiness, awesome, praised, doer of wonders? 12 You stretched out your right hand; the earth swallowed them. 13 In your kindness you led this people that you redeemed; you carried [them] in your mighty strength to the praised dwelling of your holiness. 14 Peoples will hear and tremble; anguish will seize the inhabitants of Philistia. 15 Then the chiefs of Edom were terrified; the mighty men of Moab, trembling has seized them; all the inhabitants of Canaan turned pale. 16 Fear and dread fall on them; by the greatness of your arm they are silent as the stone, until your people cross over, Shema, until this people that you acquired crosses over. 17 You will bring them in and plant them on the mountain of your inheritance, a ready place for your dwelling that you set apart, Shema; the sanctuary, Shema, that your hand established. 18 Shema reigns forever and beyond. 19 For Pharaoh's horses went into the sea with his chariotry and with his horsemen, and Shema brought the waters of the sea back upon them, and the children of Israel walked on dry land in the middle of the sea." 20 And Miriam the prophetess, Aaron's sister, took the tambourine in her hand, and all the women went out after her with tambourines and with dances. 21 And Miriam answered them, "Praise Shema, for the nation that made war, its horse and its rider he has hurled into the sea." 22 And Moses moved Israel on from the Sea of Suf and brought them out to the wilderness of Shur, and they walked a three days' road in the wilderness and found no water. 23 And they came to Marah, and they could not drink water from Marah, for it was bitter; that is why its name was called Marah. 24 And the people grumbled against Moses, saying, "What shall we drink?" 25 And Moses cried out to Shema, and Shema showed him a tree, and he threw [it] into the water, and the water became sweet. There he set for them a decree and a judgment, and there he tested them. 26 And he said, "If you will truly listen to the voice of Shema your God, and do what is right in his eyes, and pay attention to his commands, and keep all his decrees, not one of the diseases that I brought on Egypt will I bring on you, for I am Shema your healer." 27 And they came to Elim, and in Elim [there were] twelve springs of water and seventy palm trees, and they camped there by the water.
1 They set out from Elim, and the whole community of the children of Israel entered the wilderness of Sin, which lies between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their going out from the land of Egypt. 2 And the whole community of the children of Israel grumbled against Moses and against Aaron in the wilderness. 3 And the children of Israel said to them, “If only we had died by the hand of Shema in the land of Egypt, when we sat over the pot of meat, when we ate bread until we were full! For you have brought us out into this wilderness to kill this whole assembly by hunger.” 4 And Shema said to Moses, “Look, I am raining bread down on you from the heavens, and the people will go out and gather each day’s amount on its own day, so that I may test them, whether they will walk in my law or not. 5 And on the sixth day they will prepare what they bring in, and it will be double what they gather day by day.” 6 And Moses and Aaron said to all the children of Israel, “In the evening you will know that it was Shema who brought you out of the land of Egypt, 7 and in the morning you will see the glory of Shema, since he has heard your grumblings against Shema. And what are we, that you grumble against us?” 8 And Moses said, “When Shema gives you meat to eat in the evening and bread in the morning until you are full, since Shema has heard the grumblings you are grumbling against him — and what are we? Your grumblings are not against us but against Shema.” 9 And Moses said to Aaron, “Say to the whole community of the children of Israel, ‘Draw near before Shema, for he has heard your grumblings.’” 10 And as Aaron was speaking with the whole community of the children of Israel, they looked toward the wilderness, and there was the glory of Shema, appearing in the cloud. 11 And Shema spoke with Moses, saying, 12 “I have heard the grumblings of the children of Israel. Speak with them and say, ‘Between the evenings you will eat meat, and in the morning you will have your fill of bread, and you will know that I am Shema your God.’” 13 And in the evening the quails came up and covered the camp, and in the morning there was a layer of dew all around the camp. 14 And the layer of dew went up, and there on the face of the wilderness was something thin and glittering, fine, pressed flat on the ground. 15 The children of Israel saw [it], and each said to his brother, "What is it?" for they did not know what it was. Moses told them, "It is the bread Shema has given you to eat. 16 This is the matter Shema has commanded: Gather some of it, each according to what he eats, a measure per head, by the number of your souls; each of you shall take for those in his tent.” 17 And the children of Israel did so, and they gathered, one much and one little. 18 And they measured it with the measure, and the one with much had nothing left over, and the one with little did not run short; each gathered according to what he eats. 19 And Moses said to them, “No one is to leave any of it until morning.” 20 But they did not listen to Moses; some men left some of it until the morning, and it bred worms and stank, and Moses was angry with them. 21 And they gathered it morning after morning, each according to what he eats, and when the sun grew hot it melted. 22 And on the sixth day they gathered double for themselves, two measures for each one, and all the leaders of the community came and told Moses. 23 And he said to them, “This is what Shema spoke: Tomorrow is a rest, a holy sabbath to Shema. Bake what you are going to bake and cook what you are going to cook, and set aside everything left over for yourselves, to be kept until morning.” 24 And they set it aside until morning, as Moses had commanded, and it did not stink, and there was no worm in it. 25 Today you will not find [it] in the field. 26 Six days you shall gather it, and on the seventh day, the sabbath, there will be none of it.” 27 And on the seventh day some of the people went out to gather, and they did not find [any]. 28 And Shema said to Moses, “How long do you refuse to keep my commands and my law? 29 See, Shema has given you the sabbath; that is why he gives you bread for two days on the sixth day. Stay, each of you, where he is; let no one go out from his place on the sabbath day.” 30 And the people rested on the seventh day. 31 And the house of Israel called its name manna, and it was like husked rice, white, and its taste was like cakes baked in honey. 32 And Moses said, “This is the word Shema has commanded: A full measure of it is to be kept for your generations, so that they may see the bread I fed you with in the wilderness when I brought you out of the land of Egypt.” 33 And Moses said to Aaron, “Take a jar and put a full measure of manna in it, and set it before Shema to be kept for your generations.” 34 As Shema commanded Moses, Aaron set it before the testimony to be kept. 35 And the children of Israel ate the manna forty years, until they entered a settled land; they ate the manna until they entered the border of the land of Canaan. 36 And the measure is a tenth of the seah.
1 And the whole community of the children of Israel set out from the wilderness of Sin by their stages, at the word of Shema, and camped at Rephidim, and there was no water for the people to drink. 2 The people quarreled with Moses and said, "Give us water to drink." Moses answered them, "Why do you quarrel with me? And why do you put Shema to the test?" 3 And the people thirsted there for water, and the people grumbled against Moses and said, “Why did you bring us up from Egypt to kill me and my sons and my livestock with thirst?” 4 And Moses cried out to Shema, saying, “What am I to do for this people? A little more and they will stone me.” 5 And Shema said to Moses, “Go ahead of the people, and take some of the elders of Israel with you, and take in your hand your staff with which you struck the river, and go. 6 I will be standing before you there on the rock at Horeb, and you will strike the rock, and water will come out of it, and the people will drink.” And Moses did so before the eyes of the elders of Israel. 7 And he called the name of the place Testing and Quarrel, because of the quarreling of the children of Israel and because of their testing Shema, saying, “Is Shema among us or not?” 8 And Amalek came and fought with Israel at Rephidim. 9 And Moses said to Joshua, “Choose men for us, and go out and fight against Amalek. Tomorrow I will be standing on the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand.” 10 And Joshua did as Moses had told him, to fight against Amalek; and Moses and Aaron and Hur went up to the top of the hill. 11 And whenever Moses raised his hands, Israel prevailed, and whenever he lowered his hands, Amalek prevailed. 12 Moses' hands grew heavy, so they took a stone and set it under him, and he sat on it; Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on one side and one on the other, and his hands stayed steady until the sun went down. 13 And Joshua defeated Amalek and his people and killed them with the edge of the sword. 14 And Shema said to Moses, “Write this as a memorial in a book, and put it in Joshua’s hearing, for I will utterly wipe out the memory of Amalek from under the heavens.” 15 And Moses built an altar and called its name Shema the Victor. 16 And he said, “For a hand is on the throne: war for Shema against Amalek from generation to generation.”
1 And Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’ father-in-law, heard all that God had done for Moses and for Israel his people, that Shema had brought Israel out of Egypt. 2 And Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took Zipporah, Moses’ wife, after she had been sent away, 3 and her two sons, the name of one being Gershom, for he said, “I have been a stranger in a foreign land,” 4 and the name of the other Eliezer, for “The God of my father was my help and rescued me from the sword of Pharaoh.” 5 And Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife to Moses, to the wilderness where he was camped, there at the mountain of God. 6 And word was brought to Moses, “I, your father-in-law Jethro, am coming to you, and your wife, and her two sons with her.” 7 And Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, and he bowed to Moses and kissed him, and they asked each other how they were, and they went into the tent. 8 And Moses recounted to his father-in-law all that Shema had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians on Israel’s account, all the hardship that had met them on the way, and [how] Shema had rescued them. 9 And Jethro was glad about all the good that Shema had done for Israel, that he had rescued them from the hand of the Egyptians. 10 And Jethro said, “Blessed is Shema, who rescued you from the hand of the Egyptians and from the hand of Pharaoh, who rescued the people from under the hand of the Egyptians. 11 Now I know that Shema is greater than all the gods, for [he was] over them in the very matter in which they acted arrogantly.” 12 And Jethro, Moses’ father-in-law, took a burnt offering and sacrifices for God, and Aaron came, with some of the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses’ father-in-law before God. 13 And afterward Moses sat to judge the people, and the people stood around Moses from morning until evening. 14 And Moses’ father-in-law saw all that he was doing for the people, and he said, “What is this thing you are doing for the people? Why do you sit by yourself, with all the people standing around you from morning until evening?” 15 And Moses said to his father-in-law, “Because the people come to me to inquire of God. 16 When they have a matter, it comes to me, and I decide between a man and his fellow, and I make known the decrees of God and his teachings.” 17 And Moses’ father-in-law said to him, “The thing you are doing is not good. 18 You will wear yourself out completely, both you and this people with you, for the thing is too heavy for you; you cannot carry it out by yourself. 19 Now listen to my voice; I will advise you, and may God be with you. You be [the one] for the people before God, and you shall bring their matters to God. 20 And you shall warn them about the decrees and the teachings, and make known to them the path they are to walk in and the work they are to do. 21 And you, look out for yourself from all the people capable men who fear God, men of truth who hate plunder, and set them over them as chiefs of thousands and chiefs of hundreds, chiefs of fifties and chiefs of tens. 22 And let them judge the people at all times, and every great matter they shall bring to you, and every small matter they shall judge themselves; so lighten [the load] on you, and they will carry [it] with you. 23 If you do this thing, and God commands you, you will be able to stand, and all this people too will come to its place in peace.” 24 And Moses listened to the voice of his father-in-law and did all that he said. And Moses said to the people, “I cannot carry you by myself. Shema your God has multiplied you, and here you are today like the stars of the heavens in number. May Shema the God of your fathers add to you a thousand times as many as you are and bless you, as he promised you. How can I by myself carry your trouble, your burdens and your quarrels? Provide for yourselves wise men, discerning and knowledgeable, for your tribes, and I will set them at your head.” And they answered and said, “The thing you have spoken of doing is good.” And he took the heads of their tribes, wise and knowledgeable men, 25 and he made them heads over them: chiefs of thousands and of hundreds, chiefs of fifties and of tens, and scribes for their tribes. He commanded their judges, saying, "Listen between your brothers, and judge truly between a man and his brother and his resident foreigner. Do not recognize faces in judgment; hear small and great alike. Do not be afraid of anyone's face, for judgment belongs to God. Any matter too hard for you, bring to me, and I will hear it." He also commanded them everything they were to do. 26 And they judged the people at all times; the great matter they would bring to Moses, and every small matter they judged themselves. 27 And Moses sent his father-in-law off, and he went away to his own land.
1 In the third month after the children of Israel went out from the land of Egypt, on that day they came to the wilderness of Sinai. 2 They set out from Rephidim and came to the wilderness of Sinai and camped in the wilderness, and Israel camped there facing the mountain. 3 Moses went up to God, and Shema called to him from the mountain, saying, "This is what you are to say to the house of Jacob and declare to the children of Israel: 4 'You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and [how] I carried you on eagles' wings and led you to me. 5 And now, if you truly listen to my voice and keep my covenant, you will be a treasure out of all the peoples, for all the earth belongs to me. 6 And you will be to me a kingdom of priests and a holy nation.' These are the words you are to speak with the sons of Israel." 7 Moses came and called the wise men of the people and laid before them all these words that Shema had commanded him. 8 All the people answered as one and said, "Everything Shema has spoken we will do." And Moses brought the people's words back to Shema. 9 Shema said to Moses, "See, I am coming to you in the thickness of the cloud, so that the people may hear when I speak with you, and may trust in you as well forever." And Moses told the people's words to Shema. 10 Shema told Moses, "Go to the people and sanctify them today and tomorrow; have them wash their clothes, 11 and let them be prepared for the third day, for on the third day Shema will come down onto Mount Sinai in the sight of all the people. 12 Mark off the mountain all around, and say to the people, 'Guard yourselves against going up the mountain or touching its edge. Anyone who touches the mountain shall surely be killed. 13 No hand shall touch him, but he shall surely be stoned or shot through; whether beast or human, he shall not live. When the horn sounds long, they shall go up onto the mountain.'" 14 Moses came down from the mountain to the people and sanctified the people, and they washed their clothes. 15 He said to the people, "Be prepared for three days; do not go near a woman." 16 On the third day, when morning came, there were thunders and lightnings and a heavy cloud on the mountain, and the sound of the horn was very strong, and all the people in the camp shook. 17 Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they took their stand at the foot of the mountain. 18 Mount Sinai was all aflame, because Shema came down upon it in fire; its flame [rose] like the flame of a furnace, and the whole mountain shook violently. 19 Moses was speaking, and God was answering him with a voice. 20 Shema descended on Mount Sinai, onto the top of the mountain; then Shema called Moses to the mountaintop, and Moses went up. 21 Shema said to Moses, "Go down, warn the people, so that they do not break through toward Shema to look, and many of them fall. 22 And the priests too, who draw near to Shema, are to sanctify themselves, so that Shema does not break out against them." 23 Moses said to Shema, "The people cannot go up to Mount Sinai, for you warned us, saying, 'Mark off the mountain and sanctify it.'" 24 Shema said to him, "Go, go down, and come up, you and Aaron with you; but the priests and the people are not to break through to go up to Shema, so that he does not break out against them." 25 And Moses went down from the mountain to the people and told them.
1 God spoke all these words, saying: 2 "I am Shema your God, who brought you out of Egypt's land, out of the house of slaves. 3 There shall be no other gods for you before me. 4 Do not make yourself a carved image or any likeness of what is in the heavens above, what is on the earth below, or what is in the waters beneath the earth. 5 Do not bow down to them and do not serve them, for I, Shema your God, am a jealous God, who visits the guilt of fathers on sons, on the third [generation] and on the fourth, of those who hate me, 6 and who shows kindness to thousands, to those who love me and to those who keep my commandments. 7 Do not take up the name of Shema your God for nothing, for Shema will not acquit anyone who takes up his name for nothing. 8 Keep the Sabbath day by making it holy. 9 Six days you are to labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to Shema your God. Do no work on it, you, your son or your daughter, your male slave or your female slave, or the foreigner who lives in your towns. 11 For in six days Shema made the heavens and the earth and the sea and everything in them, and rested on the seventh day; that is why Shema blessed the Sabbath day and made it holy. 12 Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long on the land that Shema your God gives you. 13 Do not kill. 14 Do not commit adultery. 15 Do not steal. 16 Do not give false testimony against your neighbor. 17 Do not covet your companion's house, and do not covet your companion's wife, his field, his male slave or his female slave, his ox or his donkey, or anything that belongs to your companion. And when Shema your God has brought you into the Canaanite's land, which you are entering to inherit, set up great stones for yourself and coat them with plaster, and write on the stones all the words of this law. And when you cross the Jordan, set up these stones that I command you today on Mount Gerizim, and build there an altar to Shema your God, an altar of stones; do not swing iron over them. Build the altar of Shema your God from whole stones, and offer burnt offerings on it to Shema your God, and sacrifice peace offerings and eat there, and rejoice before Shema your God. That mountain is across the Jordan, beyond the road toward the sunset, in the land of the Canaanite who lives in the valley, opposite Gilgal, beside the plain of Moreh, opposite Shechem." 18 All the people heard the voices and the sound of the horn, and saw the torches and the mountain aflame; and all the people were afraid and trembled, and stood at a distance. 19 They said to Moses, "Look, Shema our God has shown us his glory and his greatness, and we have heard his voice from inside the fire. Today we have seen that God may speak with a human being and he lives. So now, why should we die? For this great fire will consume us. If we keep on hearing the voice of Shema our God any longer, we will die. For who of all flesh has heard the voice of the living God speaking from inside the fire, as we have, and survived? You go near and hear everything Shema our God says, and you speak with us everything Shema our God speaks with you, and we will listen and do it. But do not let God speak with us, or we will die." 20 Moses said to the people, "Do not be afraid, for God has come in order to test you, and so that fear of him may be on your faces, so that you do not sin." 21 The people stood at a distance, and Moses approached the thick cloud where God was. And Shema spoke with Moses, saying, "I have heard the sound of the words of this people that they spoke with you; they did well in everything they spoke. If only they had such a heart as this, to fear me and to keep my commandments all the days, so that it might go well with them and with their sons forever! I will raise up a prophet for them from among their brothers, like you, and I will put my words in his mouth, and he will speak with them everything I command him. And whoever does not listen to his words that he speaks in my name, I will demand [it] of him. But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in my name that I did not command him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall be killed. And if you say in your heart, 'How can the word that Shema has not spoken be known?' When the prophet speaks in the name of Shema and the word does not happen and does not come about, that is the word Shema has not spoken; the prophet spoke it in arrogance; do not be afraid of him. Go, tell them, 'Return to your tents.' But you, stand here with me, and I will speak with you all the commandment, the decrees and the rulings that you are to teach them, so that they may do [them] in the land that I am giving them to inherit." 22 Shema spoke with Moses, saying, "Speak with the sons of Israel: 'You have seen that I spoke with you from heaven. 23 Do not make gods of silver alongside me, and do not make gods of gold for yourselves. 24 Make me an altar of earth, and slaughter on it your burnt offerings and your peace offerings from your flock and from your cattle. In the place where I have made mention of my name, there I will come to you and bless you. 25 And if you make me an altar of stones, do not build them hewn, for [if] you swing your sword over it, you have profaned it. 26 And do not offer up with falsehoods on my altar, so that your nakedness is not uncovered toward it.'"
1 These are the judgments you are to lay out before them. 2 When you buy a Hebrew slave, he is to serve you six years, and in the seventh he goes out to freedom without payment. 3 If he comes in alone, he goes out alone; if he is a married man, his wife goes out with him. 4 If his master gives him a wife who bears him sons or daughters, the wife and her children belong to her master, and he goes out alone. 5 But if the slave says outright, "I love my master, my wife and my sons; I will not go out a free man," 6 his master is to bring him before God and bring him to the door or to the doorpost, and his master is to pierce his ear with an awl, and he will serve him for all time. 7 And if a man sells his daughter as a maidservant, she does not go out the way the male slaves go out. 8 If she is displeasing in the eyes of her master, who has not designated her, he is to let her be redeemed; he has no right to sell her to a foreign people, since he has put his garment over her. 9 And if he designates her for his son, he is to treat her by the rule for daughters. 10 If he takes another [wife] for himself, he is not to cut back her provisions, her clothing or her needs. 11 And if he does not do these three things for her, she goes out without payment, with no money. 12 Whoever strikes a person so that he dies is to be put to death. 13 But if he did not lie in ambush, and God brought [it] into his hand, I will set you a place where he can flee. 14 And if a man acts arrogantly against his fellow, to kill him by cunning, you are to take him from beside my altar to be killed. 15 Whoever strikes his father or his mother is to be put to death. 16 And whoever steals a person and sells him, or he is found in his hand, is to be put to death. 17 And whoever curses his father or his mother is to be put to death. 18 And if men quarrel, and one strikes his fellow, and he does not die but takes to his bed, 19 if he gets up and walks about outside on his staff, the one who struck him is cleared; he only has to pay for his lost time and see that he is fully healed. 20 And if a man strikes his slave or his maidservant and he dies under his hand, he is to be put to death. 21 But if he holds on a day or two days, he is not to be put to death, for he is his money. 22 And if men fight and strike a pregnant woman, and her child comes out but no harm results, he is to be made to pay whatever fine the woman's husband sets on him, and he is to pay through mediators. 23 But if there is harm, you are to give a life in exchange for a life, 24 an eye in exchange for an eye, a tooth in exchange for a tooth, a hand in exchange for a hand, a foot in exchange for a foot, 25 a burn in exchange for a burn, a wound in exchange for a wound, a blow in exchange for a blow. 26 And if a man strikes the eye of his slave or the eye of his maidservant and ruins it, he is to set him free in exchange for his eye. 27 And if he knocks out the tooth of his slave or the tooth of his maidservant, he is to set him free in exchange for his tooth. 28 And if an ox or any beast strikes a man or a woman and he dies, the beast is to be stoned, and its flesh is not to be eaten, but the beast's owner is innocent. 29 But if the beast has been a striker in times past, and its owner was warned and did not guard it, and it kills a man or a woman, the beast is to be stoned and its owner too is to be put to death. 30 If a ransom is set on him, he is to give as the redemption of his life all that is set on him. 31 Whether it kills a son or a daughter, it is to be done to him by this same judgment. 32 And if the beast kills a slave or a maidservant, he is to give thirty shekels of silver to his master, and the beast is to be stoned. 33 And if a man opens a pit, or if a man cuts a pit and does not cover it, and an ox or a donkey or any beast falls in there, 34 the owner of the pit is to pay; he is to return money to its owner, and the dead one will be his. 35 And if a man's ox or any beast strikes his fellow's ox or any beast and it dies, they are to sell the living one and divide its money, and they are to divide the dead one too. 36 Or if it is known that the beast has been a striker in times past and its owner did not guard it, he is to pay in full, a beast in exchange for a beast, and the dead one will be his. 37 And if a man steals an ox or a sheep and slaughters it or sells it, he is to pay five oxen in exchange for the ox and four from the flock in exchange for the sheep.
1 If the thief is caught in the act of breaking in and is struck and dies, there is no blood [guilt] for him. 2 If the sun has shone on him, there is blood [guilt] for him. He is to pay in full; if he has nothing, he is to be sold for his theft. 3 If the stolen thing is found in his hand alive, whether ox or donkey or sheep or any beast, he is to pay two for one. 4 And if a man grazes a field or a vineyard and lets his livestock loose, and it grazes in another field, he is to pay in full from his own field according to its produce; and if it grazes the whole field, he is to pay from the best of his field and the best of his vineyard. 5 If fire goes out and catches in thorns and devours a stack or standing grain or a field, the one who lit the blaze is to pay in full. 6 And if a man gives his fellow money or goods to keep, and it is stolen from the man's house, if the thief is found, he is to pay two for one. 7 And if the thief is not found, the owner of the house is to draw near to God [to show] whether he has not [laid] his hand on his fellow's property. 8 In every matter of wrongdoing, over an ox, a donkey, a sheep, clothing, or any lost thing of which someone says, "Surely this is it," the case of the two is to come before Shema; the one whom God condemns is to pay two for one to his fellow. 9 And if a man gives his fellow a donkey or an ox or a sheep or any beast to keep, and it dies or is injured or is carried off, with no one seeing, 10 an oath by Shema is to stand between the two, that he has not laid his hand on his fellow's property; its owner is to accept it, and he does not pay. 11 If it is in fact stolen from his keeping, he is to pay its owner. 12 If it is in fact torn by wild animals, he is to bring the torn remains as evidence, and he does not pay. 13 And if a man borrows from his fellow, and it is injured or dies while its owner is not with it, he is to pay in full. 14 If its owner is with it, he does not pay; if it is hired, it came in for its hire. 15 And if a man entices a virgin who is not betrothed and lies with her, he is to pay her bride-price [and take her] as his wife. 16 And if her father flatly refuses to give her to him, he is to weigh out money equal to the bride-price of virgins. 17 You are not to let a sorcerer live. 18 Anyone who lies with a beast is to be put to death. 19 Whoever sacrifices to other gods is to be destroyed. 20 And you are not to mistreat or oppress a stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt. 21 You are not to afflict any widow or orphan. 22 For if you do afflict them, and if they do cry out to me, I will surely hear their cry, 23 and my anger will burn hot, and I will kill you with the sword, and your wives will become widows and your sons orphans. 24 If you lend money to my people, to the afflicted among you, you are not to act toward him like a debt collector; you are not to charge him double. 25 If you do take your fellow's garment as a pledge, you are to return it to him by sunset. 26 For it is his only covering; it is his garment for his skin. What else will he sleep in? And when he cries out to me, I will hear, for I am compassionate. 27 You are not to curse God, nor curse the chief among your people. 28 You are not to hold back your full [harvest] and your pressings. You are to give me the firstborn of your sons. 29 You are to do the same with your ox and your flock: it is to stay with its mother seven days, and on the eighth day you are to give it to me. 30 And you are to be holy men to me; you are not to eat flesh torn [by beasts] in the field. You are to throw it away.
1 Do not accept a groundless report. Do not join your hand with the wicked to be a lying witness. 2 Do not go after the many to do evil, and do not speak in a dispute so as to turn aside after the many and pervert [justice], 3 and do not show favor to a poor man in his dispute. 4 If you come upon the ox of your enemy, or his donkey, or any of his animals straying, you must return it to him. 5 If you see the donkey of your adversary lying under its load, and you would hold back from leaving it to him, you must load it up together with him. 6 Do not turn aside the judgment of your poor in his dispute. 7 Keep far from a lying word, and do not kill the innocent and the righteous, for I will not acquit the wicked. 8 And do not take money, for money blinds the eyes of the clear-sighted and twists the words of the truthful. 9 And do not oppress a sojourner, for you know the life of a sojourner, since you were sojourners in the land of the Egyptians. 10 For six years you shall sow your land and gather its produce, 11 but in the seventh you shall release it and leave it alone, so that the poor of your people may eat, and what they leave the wild animals may eat. Do the same with your vineyard and your olive trees. 12 For six days you shall do your work, and on the seventh day you shall rest, so that your servant and your maid may rest as you do, and all your cattle and the sojourner. 13 Keep all that I have told you. Do not mention the name of other gods, and let them not be heard on your lips. 14 Three times in the year you shall hold a feast for me. 15 You shall keep the feast of unleavened bread. For seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, as I commanded you, at the appointed time in the month of the ears of grain, for in it you went out of Egypt. And let no one appear before me empty-handed. 16 [You shall keep the feast of] harvest, the firstfruits of your work that you sow in the field, and the feast of ingathering at the close of the year, when you gather your work from the field. 17 Three times in the year all your males shall appear in the presence of the ark of Shema. 18 Do not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leaven, and do not let the fat of my feast stay overnight until morning. 19 You shall bring the first of the firstfruits of your land to the house of Shema your God. Do not cook a kid in its mother's milk, for whoever does this is like one who sacrifices in forgetfulness, and it is a provocation to the God of Jacob. 20 See, I am sending my messenger ahead of you to guard you along the way and bring you to the place I have prepared. 21 Be careful before him and listen to his voice. Do not rebel against him, for he will not forgive your transgression, for my name is within him. 22 For if you truly listen to my voice and do all that I speak, I will be hostile to your enemies and distress those who distress you. 23 For my messenger will go ahead of you and bring you to the Canaanite, the Amorite, the Hittite, the Girgashite, the Perizzite, the Hivite and the Jebusite, and I will destroy them. 24 Do not bow down to their gods or serve them, and do not act as they act, but tear them down completely and smash their pillars to pieces. 25 You shall serve Shema your God, and he will bless your bread and your water, and he will turn sickness away from among you. 26 No woman in your land will miscarry or be barren. I will make the count of your days full. 27 I will send my dread ahead of you, and I will kill all the people you come among, and I will make all your enemies turn their backs to you. 28 I will send the hornet ahead of you, and it will drive out the Canaanite and the Amorite, the Hittite and the Girgashite, the Perizzite and the Hivite and the Jebusite from before you. 29 I will not drive them out from before you in a single year, or the land would become desolate and the wild animals would multiply against you. 30 Little by little I will drive them out from before you, until you have grown fruitful and take possession of the land. 31 I will set your border from the Sea of Suf to the sea of the Philistines, and from the wilderness to the River, for I will give the inhabitants of the land into your hands, and I will drive them out from before you. 32 Do not make a covenant with them or with their gods. 33 They shall not live in your land, or they will make you guilty before me; if you serve their gods, they will become a trap for you.
1 And it was said to Moses: Come up to Shema, you and Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar, and seventy of the elders of Israel, and bow down at a distance. 2 Moses alone shall approach Shema; the others shall not approach, and the people shall not go up with him. 3 Moses came and recounted to the people all the words of Shema and all his ordinances, and all the people answered with one voice and said: We will do all the words that Shema has spoken. 4 Moses wrote down all the words of Shema. Early in the morning he rose and built an altar at the foot [of the mountain], along with twelve stones for the twelve tribes of Israel. 5 He sent the young men of the children of Israel, and they offered burnt offerings and sacrificed peace offerings to Shema, young bulls of the herd. 6 Moses took half of the blood and put [it] in bowls, and half of the blood he sprinkled on the altar. 7 He took the book of the covenant and read [it] aloud for the people to hear, and they replied: Everything Shema has spoken we will hear and do. 8 Moses took the blood and sprinkled it on the people, and said: Here is the blood of the covenant that Shema has cut with you concerning all these words. 9 Moses went up, with Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar, and seventy of the elders of Israel. 10 They revered the God of Israel, and the place of his feet was like the work of a sapphire brick, and like the heavens themselves in brightness. 11 Against the outlying ones of the children of Israel he did not stretch out his hand. They rejoiced with God, and they ate and drank. 12 Shema said to Moses: Come up to me on the mountain and stay there, and I will give you the tablets of stone, the law and the commandment, which I have written to teach them. 13 Moses rose with Joshua his attendant, and Moses went up to the mountain of God. 14 He said to the elders: Wait here for us until we come back to you. Aaron and Hur are with you; whoever has a matter to settle shall go to them. 15 Moses went up the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain. 16 The glory of Shema rested on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days, and on the seventh day he called to Moses from within the cloud. 17 The appearance of the glory of Shema was like a consuming fire on the top of the mountain before the eyes of the children of Israel. 18 Moses entered within the cloud and went up the mountain, and Moses was on the mountain forty days and forty nights.
1 And Shema spoke with Moses, saying: 2 "Speak with the sons of Israel, and let them take an offering for me; from every person whose heart is willing you shall take my offering. 3 And this is the offering that you shall take from them: gold, silver and bronze, 4 blue, purple, crimson dye, fine linen and goat [hair], 5 rams' skins reddened, blackened skins, and acacia wood, 6 oil for lighting, and spices for the anointing oil and for the fragrant incense, 7 onyx stones and stones for setting, for the ephod and for the breastpiece. 8 And let them make me a sanctuary, and I will dwell in your midst. 9 Exactly as I am showing you on the mountain, the likeness of the tabernacle and the likeness of all its vessels, so you shall make [it]. 10 You shall make an ark of acacia wood, two and a half cubits long, a cubit and a half wide and a cubit and a half high. 11 Overlay it with pure gold; inside and outside you shall overlay it, and make a gold crown for it all around. 12 Cast four gold rings for it and put [them] on its four corners, two rings on its first side and two rings on its second side. 13 Make poles of acacia wood and overlay them with gold. 14 Insert the poles into the rings on the sides of the ark, to carry the ark by them. 15 The poles shall stay in the rings of the ark; they shall not move from it. 16 Put inside the ark the testimony that I will give you. 17 Make a cover of pure gold, two and a half cubits long and a cubit and a half wide. 18 Make two cherubim of gold; make them of hammered work, at the two ends of the cover 19 they shall be made: one cherub at the end on this side and one cherub at the end on that side. From the cover you shall make the cherubim on its two ends. 20 The cherubim shall have their wings spread upward, sheltering the cover with their wings, their faces toward each other; the faces of the cherubim shall be toward the cover. 21 Put the cover on top of the ark, and inside the ark put the testimony. 22 I will meet you there and speak with you from above the cover, from between the two cherubim that are on the ark of the testimony, all that I command you for the sons of Israel. 23 You shall make a table of acacia wood, two cubits long, a cubit wide and a cubit and a half high. 24 Overlay it with pure gold, and make a gold crown for it all around. 25 Make a rim a handbreadth [wide] for it all around, and make a gold crown for its rim all around. 26 Make four gold rings for it, and put the rings on its four corners, which are at its four legs. 27 Next to the rim the rings shall be, as places for the poles to carry the table. 28 Make the poles of acacia wood and overlay them with gold, and the table shall be carried by them. 29 Make its dishes, its bowls, its basins and its spoons, with which libations are poured; make them of gold. 30 And place on the table the bread of the presence before me continually. 31 You shall make a lampstand of pure gold; make the lampstand of hammered work. Its base, its branches, its cups, its knobs and its flowers shall be of one piece with it. 32 Six branches shall go out from its sides: three branches of the lampstand from its first side and three branches of the lampstand from its second side, 33 three almond-shaped cups on one branch, a knob and a flower, and three almond-shaped cups on the other branch, a knob and a flower; so you shall do for the six branches that go out from the lampstand. 34 And on the lampstand [itself], four almond-shaped cups, its knobs and its flowers, 35 with a knob under two branches of one piece with it, and a knob under two branches of one piece with it, for the six branches that go out from the lampstand. 36 Their knobs and their branches shall be of one piece with it, all of it a single hammered piece of pure gold. 37 Make its seven lamps, and kindle its lamps, and they shall give light toward the space in front of it. 38 Its tongs and its fire pans [shall be] of pure gold. 39 You shall make it of a talent of pure gold, together with all these vessels. 40 See, and make [them] after their likeness that you are being shown on the mountain.
1 The tabernacle you shall make of ten curtains of twisted linen, blue, purple and crimson dye; make them with figures, the work of a designer. 2 Each curtain shall be twenty-eight cubits long and four cubits wide; all the curtains shall have one measurement. 3 Five curtains shall be joined to each other, and five [more] curtains shall be joined to each other. 4 Make blue loops on the edge of the one curtain at the end of the [first] joined set, and do the same on the edge of the end curtain in the second joined set. 5 Make fifty loops on the one curtain, and make fifty loops at the end of the curtain in the second joined set, the loops lining up with each other. 6 Make fifty gold clasps and join the curtains to each other with the clasps, and the tabernacle shall be one. 7 Make curtains of goat [hair] for a tent over the tabernacle; make eleven curtains. 8 Each curtain shall be thirty cubits long and four cubits wide; the eleven curtains shall have one measurement. 9 Join five curtains by themselves and six curtains by themselves, and fold over the sixth curtain at the front of the tent. 10 Make fifty loops on the edge of the one curtain at the end of the [first] joined set, and make fifty loops on the edge of the curtain of the second joined set. 11 Make fifty bronze clasps, put the clasps into the loops, and join the tent so that it is one. 12 As for the hanging excess in the curtains of the tent, the half curtain left over, you shall let it hang down over the back of the tabernacle. 13 The cubit on this side and the cubit on that side, of what is left over in the length of the tent curtains, shall hang down over the sides of the tabernacle, on this side and on that side, to cover it. 14 Make a covering for the tent of rams' skins reddened, and a covering of blackened skins on top. 15 Make the boards for the tabernacle of acacia wood, standing upright. 16 Each board shall be ten cubits long and a cubit and a half wide. 17 Each board shall have two pegs, fitted to each other; do the same for all the boards of the tabernacle. 18 Make the boards for the tabernacle: twenty boards for the southern side, toward the south. 19 Make forty silver bases under the twenty boards, two bases under one board for its two pegs, and two bases under another board for its two pegs. 20 For the second side of the tabernacle, the north side, make twenty boards, 21 with their forty silver bases, two bases under one board and two bases under another board. 22 For the rear of the tabernacle, toward the west, make six boards. 23 Make two boards for the corners of the tabernacle at their rear. 24 They shall be paired at the bottom, and together they shall be paired at the top, into the one ring; so it shall be for both of them; they shall form the two corners. 25 So there shall be eight boards with their silver bases, sixteen bases, two bases and two bases for each board. 26 Make bars of acacia wood, five for the boards of one side of the tabernacle, 27 five bars for the boards of the second side of the tabernacle, and five bars for the boards of the side of the tabernacle at their rear, toward the west. 28 The middle bar, halfway up the boards, shall run through from end to end. 29 Overlay the boards with gold, make their rings of gold as places for the bars, and overlay the bars with gold. 30 Then set up the tabernacle according to its plan that you were shown on the mountain. 31 Make a veil of blue, purple, crimson dye and twisted linen; they shall make it with figures, the work of a designer. 32 Put it on four acacia pillars overlaid with gold, with their hooks of gold, on four silver bases. 33 Put the veil under the clasps, and bring the ark of the testimony in there, inside the veil; the veil shall divide for you between the holy [place] and the holy of holies. 34 Place the table outside the veil, [and] the lampstand opposite the table on the south side of the tabernacle; and put the table on the north side. 35 Make an altar for burning incense; make it of acacia wood. It shall be a cubit long and a cubit wide, square, and two cubits high; its horns shall be of one piece with it. Overlay it with pure gold, its top and its walls all around, and its horns, and make a gold crown for it all around. Make two gold rings for it below its crown; make [them] on its two sides, on both its flanks, and they shall be places for the poles to carry it by them. Make the poles of acacia wood and overlay them with gold. Put it in front of the veil that is over the ark of the testimony, where I will meet you. Aaron shall burn fragrant incense on it every morning; when he tends the lamps he shall burn it. And when Aaron lights the lamps at dusk he shall burn it, continual incense before Shema throughout your generations. You shall not offer unauthorized incense on it, or a burnt offering or a grain offering, and you shall not pour a libation on it. Aaron shall make atonement on its horns once a year; with the blood of the offering of atonement he shall make atonement on it once a year throughout your generations. It is most holy to Shema. 36 Make a screen for the entrance of the tabernacle of blue, purple, crimson dye and twisted linen, the work of an embroiderer. 37 For the screen make five acacia pillars and overlay them with pure gold, with their hooks of gold, and cast five bronze bases for them."
1 And you shall make an altar of acacia wood, five cubits in length and five cubits in breadth; the altar shall be square, and its height three cubits. 2 And you shall make its horns on its four corners; its horns shall be from it, and you shall overlay it with bronze. 3 And you shall make its pots for gathering its ashes, and its pails, and its bowls, and its forks, and its firepans; all its vessels you shall make of bronze. 4 And you shall make for it a grating, a work of bronze netting, and on the netting you shall make four bronze rings at its four sides. 5 And you shall set it beneath the ledge of the altar, below, and the netting shall reach to the middle of the altar. 6 And you shall make poles for the altar, poles of acacia wood, and overlay them with bronze. 7 And you shall bring the poles into the rings, and the poles shall be on the two sides of the altar when it is carried. 8 Hollow, of boards, you shall make it; as you were shown on the mountain, so shall they make [it]. 9 Make the court of the tabernacle: for the south side, southward, hangings for the court of twisted fine linen, a hundred cubits in length for the one side. 10 And its pillars twenty and their bases twenty, of bronze, and their hooks and their casings of silver. 11 And so for the north side in length, hangings of a hundred cubits; their pillars twenty and their bases twenty, of bronze, and their hooks and their casings of silver. 12 And the breadth of the court on the west side, hangings of fifty cubits; their pillars ten and their bases ten, of bronze. 13 And the breadth of the court on the east side, eastward, fifty cubits. 14 Fifteen cubits of hangings for the [one] flank; their pillars three and their bases three, of bronze. 15 And for the second side, fifteen cubits of hangings; their pillars three and their bases three, of bronze. 16 And for the gate of the court a screen of twenty cubits, of blue and purple and scarlet dye and twisted fine linen, the work of an embroiderer; their pillars four and their bases four, of bronze. 17 All the pillars of the court all around [shall be] sheathed in silver, their hooks of silver and their bases of bronze. 18 The length of the court a hundred cubits, and the breadth fifty cubits, and the height five cubits, of twisted fine linen, and their bases of bronze. 19 And you shall make all the vessels of the tabernacle for all its service, and all its pegs and all the pegs of the court, of bronze. And you shall make garments of blue and purple and scarlet dye for ministering in them in the sanctuary. 20 And you shall command the children of Israel, and they shall bring you pure olive oil, beaten for the light, to keep the lamp burning continually. 21 In the tent of meeting, outside the curtain that is over the testimony, Aaron and his sons shall arrange it from evening until morning before Shema: a perpetual decree for your generations from the children of Israel.
1 And you, bring Aaron your brother near to you, and his sons with him, from among the children of Israel, to serve me as priests: Aaron, Nadab and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron's sons. 2 And you shall make holy garments for Aaron your brother, for honor and for greatness. 3 And you, speak with all who are wise of heart, whom I have filled with a spirit of wisdom, and they shall make Aaron's garments to consecrate him, to serve me as priest. 4 And these are the garments that they shall make: a breastpiece and an ephod and a robe, tunics of checkered weave, a headwrap and sashes; and they shall make holy garments for Aaron your brother and for his sons, to serve me as priests. 5 They shall take from the gold, the blue, the purple, the scarlet dye and the fine linen. 6 And they shall make the ephod of gold, blue and purple and scarlet dye and twisted fine linen, the work of a designer. 7 Two joined shoulder pieces it shall have; at its two ends it shall be joined. 8 And the designed band of the ephod that is on it shall be of the same work, from it: gold, blue and purple and scarlet dye and twisted fine linen. 9 And you shall take the two onyx stones and engrave on them the names of the sons of Israel: 10 six of their names on one stone, and the names of the remaining six on the second stone, in the order of their births. 11 As the work of a craftsman in stone, as engravings of a seal, you shall engrave the two stones with the names of the sons of Israel; set all around in gold settings you shall make them. 12 And you shall place the two stones on the shoulder pieces of the ephod; they are stones of remembrance for the sons of Israel, and Aaron shall carry their names before Shema on his two shoulders as a remembrance. 13 And you shall make settings of gold, 14 and two chains of pure gold, twisted; and you shall make them of corded work, and you shall put the corded chains on the settings. 15 And you shall make a breastpiece of judgment, the work of a designer; like the work of the ephod you shall make it: of gold, blue and purple and scarlet dye and twisted fine linen you shall make it. 16 It shall be square, doubled, a span its length and a span its breadth. 17 And you shall fill it with a filling of stones, four rows: a row of red, ruddy, reddish, the first row; 18 and the second row: dark, dusky, darkish; 19 and the third row: green, verdant, greenish; 20 and the fourth row: white, pale, whitish; they shall be surrounded with settings of gold in their fillings. 21 And the stones shall be according to the names of the sons of Israel, twelve, according to their names; as engravings of a seal, each according to his name they shall be, for the twelve tribes. 22 And you shall make on the breastpiece twisted chains, corded work of pure gold. 23 And you shall make on the breastpiece two settings of gold and two rings of gold, and put the rings on the ends of the breastpiece. 24 And you shall put the two corded [chains] of gold on the two rings at the ends of the breastpiece. 25 You shall put the two ends of the two corded [chains] on the two settings, and put [them] on the ephod's shoulder pieces, facing its front. 26 And you shall make two rings of gold and set them on the two ends of the breastpiece, on its edge that lies against the joining of the ephod, on the inside. 27 And you shall make two rings of gold and put them on the two shoulder pieces of the ephod below, facing its front, beside its joining, above the designed band of the ephod. 28 And they shall fasten the breastpiece by its rings to the rings of the ephod with a cord of blue, so that it is on the band of the ephod, and the breastpiece shall not shift from upon the ephod. 29 And Aaron shall carry the names of the children of Israel in the breastpiece of judgment on his heart when he enters the sanctuary, as a remembrance before Shema continually. 30 And you shall make the Urim and the Thummim, and you shall put the Urim and the Thummim on the breastpiece of judgment, and they shall be on Aaron's heart when he goes in before Shema; and Aaron shall carry the judgment of the children of Israel on his heart before Shema continually. 31 And you shall make the robe of the ephod entirely of blue. 32 And the opening for its head shall be in its middle; it shall have a border around its opening, woven work, like the opening of a garment it shall have, so that it does not tear. 33 And you shall make on its hems pomegranates of blue and purple and scarlet dye and twisted fine linen, on its hems all around, and bells of gold between them all around. 34 A bell of gold and a pomegranate on the hems of the robe all around. 35 And it shall be on Aaron for ministering, and its sound shall be heard when he enters the sanctuary before Shema and when he goes out, so that he does not die. 36 Make a plate of pure gold and engrave on it, as engravings of a seal: "Holy to Shema." 37 And you shall place it on a cord of blue, and it shall be on the headwrap; at the very front of the headwrap it shall be. 38 And it shall be on Aaron's forehead, and Aaron shall carry the guilt of the holy things that the children of Israel consecrate in all their holy gifts; and it shall be on his forehead continually, to win favor for them before Shema. 39 And you shall weave the tunic of fine linen, and make a headwrap of fine linen, and a sash you shall make, the work of an embroiderer. 40 And for Aaron's sons you shall make tunics, and you shall make sashes for them, and caps you shall make for them, for honor and for greatness. 41 And you shall clothe Aaron your brother and his sons with him in them, and anoint them, and ordain them, and consecrate them, and they shall serve me as priests. 42 And make for them breeches of white [linen] to cover the flesh of nakedness; from the loins to the thighs they shall reach. 43 And they shall be on Aaron and on his sons when they enter the tent of meeting, or when they come near to the altar to minister in the sanctuary, so that they do not bear guilt and die: a perpetual decree for him and for his descendants after him.
1 And these are the words you shall carry out for them, to sanctify them to serve as priests for me: take one bull from the herd and two rams, whole, 2 and unleavened bread, and unleavened cakes kneaded with oil, and unleavened wafers; you shall make them of fine wheat flour. 3 And you shall place them in one basket and bring them near in the basket, along with the bull and the two rams. 4 And you shall bring Aaron and his sons near to the door of the tent of meeting and wash them with water. 5 And you shall take the garments and clothe Aaron in the tunic, and gird him with a sash, and clothe him in the robe, and put the ephod and the breastpiece on him, and fasten [it] on him with the band of the ephod. 6 And you shall set the headwrap on his head and put the holy crown on the headwrap. 7 And you shall take some of the anointing oil and pour [it] on his head and anoint him. 8 And you shall bring his sons near and clothe them in tunics. 9 And you shall gird them with sashes, Aaron and his sons, and fasten caps on them, and the priesthood shall be theirs by an everlasting decree; and you shall complete the hands of Aaron and the hands of his sons. 10 And you shall bring the bull near before Shema, [at] the door of the tent of meeting, and Aaron and his sons shall lean their hands on the bull's head. 11 And you shall slaughter the bull before Shema [at] the door of the tent of meeting. 12 And you shall take some of the bull's blood and put [it] on the horns of the altar with your finger, and pour out all the blood at the base of the altar. 13 You shall take all the fat that covers the innards, the lobe of the liver, and the two kidneys with the fat on them, and burn [them] on the altar. 14 And the bull's flesh, its hide and its dung you shall burn in fire outside the camp; it is an atonement offering. 15 And you shall take the one ram, and Aaron and his sons shall lean their hands on the ram's head. 16 And you shall slaughter the ram, take some of its blood and dash [it] on the altar all around. 17 And you shall cut the ram into its pieces, wash its innards and its legs, and put [them] with its pieces and with its head. 18 And you shall burn the whole ram on the altar; it is a burnt offering to Shema, a pleasing scent; it is an offering to Shema. 19 And you shall take the second ram, and Aaron and his sons shall lean their hands on the ram's head. 20 And you shall slaughter the ram, take some of its blood and put [it] on the tip of Aaron's ear and on the tip of his sons' right ear, on the thumb of their right hand and on the big toe of their right foot, and you shall dash the blood on the altar all around. 21 This verse is excluded. 22 From the ram you shall take the fat that covers the innards, the lobe of the liver, the two kidneys with the fat on them, and the right thigh, since it is a ram of completion, 23 and one round loaf of bread, one cake of oil bread and one wafer from the basket of unleavened bread that is before Shema. 24 And you shall lay it all on the palms of Aaron and on the palms of his sons and wave them as a waving before Shema. 25 And you shall take them from their hands and burn them on the altar with the burnt offering, for a pleasing scent; it is an offering to Shema. 26 And you shall take the breast of the ram of completion that is Aaron's and wave it as a waving before Shema, and it shall be your share. 27 And you shall sanctify the breast of the waving and the thigh of the raised offering, which was waved and which was raised from the ram of completion, from what is Aaron's and from what is his sons'. 28 It shall belong to Aaron and his sons as an everlasting share from the children of Israel, since it is a raised offering; it shall be a raised offering from the children of Israel out of their peace-offering sacrifices, their raised offering to Shema. Take some of the anointing oil and some of the blood on the altar, and sprinkle [it] on Aaron and his garments, and on his sons and his sons' garments with him; and you shall sanctify him and his garments, along with his sons and his sons' garments. 29 And the holy garments that are Aaron's shall belong to his sons after him, to be anointed in them and to have their hands completed in them. 30 For seven days the priest who takes his place from among his sons, who enters the tent of meeting to serve in the sanctuary, shall wear them. 31 And you shall take the ram of completion and cook its flesh in a holy place. 32 And Aaron and his sons shall eat the ram's flesh and the bread that is in the basket [at] the door of the tent of meeting. 33 And they shall eat those things by which atonement was made, to complete their hands in them [and] to sanctify them; but an outsider shall not eat [them], for they are holy. 34 And if any of the flesh of completion or of the bread is left over until morning, you shall burn what is left over in fire; it shall not be eaten, for it is holy. 35 And you shall do for Aaron and for his sons according to all that I have commanded you; for seven days you shall complete their hands. 36 And you shall offer a bull of atonement offering each day for atonements, and you shall make atonement for the altar when you atone for it, and you shall anoint it to sanctify it. 37 For seven days make atonement for the altar and sanctify it; then the altar will be most holy, and whatever comes near the altar will become holy. 38 And this is what you shall offer on the altar: year-old lambs, two each day, regularly, a regular burnt offering. 39 The one lamb you shall offer in the morning, and the second lamb you shall offer between the evenings. 40 And a tenth [of an ephah] of fine flour mixed with a quarter of a hin of beaten oil, and a drink offering of a quarter of a hin of wine, for the one lamb. 41 And the second lamb you shall offer between the evenings; like the grain offering of the morning and like its drink offering you shall offer it, for a pleasing scent, an offering to Shema: 42 a regular burnt offering through your generations [at] the door of the tent of meeting before Shema, where I will meet with you, to speak with you there. 43 And there I will be sought by the children of Israel, and I will sanctify [it] with my glory. 44 And I will sanctify the tent of meeting and the altar, and I will sanctify Aaron and his sons to serve as priests for me. 45 And I will dwell among the children of Israel and be their God. 46 And they shall know that I am Shema their God, who brought them out of the land of Egypt to dwell among them; I am Shema their God.

And it shall be a lasting decree for them, for him and for his offspring through their generations." 22 And Shema spoke with Moses, saying: 23 "And you, take for yourself spices: the best myrrh, five hundred [shekels], and fragrant cinnamon, half of that, two hundred and fifty, and fragrant cane, two hundred and fifty, 24 and cassia, five hundred, by the shekel of the sanctuary, and olive oil, a hin. 25 And you shall make it into holy anointing oil, a blended mixture, the work of a blender; it shall be holy anointing oil. 26 And you shall anoint with it the tent of meeting and the ark of the testimony, 27 the table and all its vessels, the lampstand and all its vessels, the altar of incense, 28 the altar of the burnt offering and all its vessels, the basin and its stand. 29 And you shall make them holy, and they will be most holy; whoever comes near them will become holy. 30 And you shall anoint Aaron and his sons and make them holy, to serve as priests for me. 31 And you shall speak to the children of Israel, saying: This is holy anointing oil for me through your generations. 32 It shall not be poured on human flesh, and you shall not make [any] like it by its proportions; it is holy, and it shall be holy for you. 33 A person who blends [any] like it, or who puts some of it on an outsider, shall be uprooted from his people." 34 And Shema spoke with Moses, saying: "Take for yourself spices: stacte, and onycha, and galbanum; spices, part for part it shall be. 35 And you shall make it into incense, a blend, the work of a blender, tempered, pure, holy. 36 And you shall grind some of it fine, and put some of it before the testimony in the tent of meeting, where I will meet you; it shall be most holy for you. 37 And the incense that you make, you shall not make by its proportions for yourselves; it shall be holy for you, for Shema. 38 A person who makes [any] like it to smell it shall be uprooted from his people."
1 And Shema spoke with Moses, saying: 2 "See, I have called by name Bezalel son of Uri son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. 3 And I have filled him with the spirit of God, with wisdom and with insight and with knowledge and with every kind of work, 4 and to devise designs, to work in gold and in silver and in bronze, 5 and the craft of stone for setting, and the craft of wood, to work in every kind of work. 6 And I, here, I have given with him Oholiab son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan; and in the heart of everyone wise of heart I will put wisdom, and they shall make all that I have commanded you: 7 the tent of meeting, and the ark for the testimony, the cover that is on it, and all the furnishings of the tabernacle, 8 the table and all its vessels, the pure lampstand and all its vessels, the altar of incense, 9 and the altar of the burnt offering and all its vessels, the basin and its base, 10 the garments of service, and the holy garments for Aaron the priest, and the garments of his sons for serving as priests, 11 the anointing oil and the incense of spices for the sanctuary, which I have commanded you." 12 And Shema spoke with Moses, saying: 13 "And you, speak with the children of Israel and say: My Sabbaths above all you shall keep, since it is a sign between me and you through your generations, so that [you] know that I am Shema who makes you holy. 14 And you shall keep the Sabbath, for it is holy for you. Whoever profanes it shall surely be put to death, for anyone who does work on it, that soul shall be uprooted from among its people. 15 Six days work shall be done, and on the seventh day [is] a Sabbath of rest, holy to Shema; anyone who does work on the Sabbath day shall surely be put to death. 16 And the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath, to observe the Sabbath through their generations, a covenant. 17 Between me and the children of Israel it is a sign forever, for in six days Shema made the heavens and the earth, and on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed." 18 And he gave Moses, when he had finished speaking with him on Mount Sinai, the two tablets of the testimony, tablets of stone, written by the finger of God.
1 And the people saw that Moses was slow to come down from the mountain, and the people gathered against Aaron and said to him, "Get up, make us gods who will go ahead of us, for this Moses, the man who brought us up from the land of Egypt, we do not know what has happened to him." 2 And Aaron said to them, "Pull off the gold rings that are in the ears of your wives, your sons and your daughters, and bring [them] to me." 3 And all the people pulled off the gold rings that were in their ears and brought [them] to Aaron. 4 And he took [them] from their hands and shaped it with a tool and made it a cast calf, and they said, "These are your gods, Israel, who brought you out of the land of Egypt." 5 And Aaron was afraid, and he built an altar in front of it, and Aaron called out and said, "A feast to Shema tomorrow." 6 And they rose early the next day and offered up burnt offerings and brought peace offerings, and the people sat down to eat, and they drank, and they got up to play. 7 And Shema spoke with Moses, saying, "Go now, for your people whom you brought up from the land of Egypt have become corrupt. 8 They have quickly turned aside from the way that I commanded them. They have made themselves a cast calf and bowed down to it and sacrificed to it, and they have said, 'These are your gods, Israel, who brought you up from the land of Egypt.'" 9 And Shema said to Moses, "I have seen this people, and look, it is a stiff-necked people. 10 So now leave me alone, and let my anger grow strong against them, and I will finish them off and make you into a great nation." And Shema was furious with Aaron, [wanting] to destroy him, and Moses prayed on Aaron's behalf. 11 And Moses eased the anger of Shema his God and said, "Why, Shema, should your anger grow strong against your people, whom you brought out of Egypt with great power and with an outstretched arm? 12 Why should the Egyptians say, 'He brought them out for harm, to kill them in the mountains and to finish them off from the face of the earth'? Turn back from the force of your anger and relent of the harm [planned] for your people. 13 Remember Abraham, Isaac and Jacob your servants, to whom you swore by yourself and to whom you spoke: 'I will greatly multiply your offspring like the stars of the sky, and all this land that I have spoken of I will give to your offspring, and they will possess it forever.'" 14 And Shema relented of the harm that he had said he would do to his people. 15 And Moses turned and came down from the mountain, with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand, tablets written on both their sides; on this side and on that they were written. 16 And the tablets were the work of God; it was engraved on the tablets. 17 And Joshua heard the noise of the people in their wrongdoing, and he said to Moses, "There is a sound of battle in the camp." 18 And he said, "It is not the sound of a band that wins, and it is not the sound of a band that is beaten; it is the sound of sins that I hear." 19 And when he came near the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, Moses' anger grew strong, and he threw the tablets from his hands and smashed them at the foot of the mountain. 20 And he took the calf that they had made and burned it in fire and ground it until it was fine, and scattered [it] over the surface of the water and made the children of Israel drink [it]. 21 Moses asked Aaron, "What did this people do to you, that you have brought a great sin on them?" 22 And Aaron said, "Do not let my lord's anger grow strong. You know the people, that they are out of control. 23 They said to me, 'Make us gods who will go ahead of us, because this Moses, the man who brought us up from the land of Egypt, we have no idea what has become of him.' 24 And I said to them, 'Whoever has gold, take it off.' And they gave [it] to me, and I threw it into the fire, and out came this calf." 25 And Moses saw the people, that they were out of control, for Aaron had let them loose, to be mocked among those who rise against them. 26 And Moses stood at the gate of the camp and said, "Whoever is for Shema, to me!" And all the sons of Levi gathered to him. 27 And he said to them, "This is what Shema, the God of Israel, says: 'Each man, put his sword on his thigh, and go through and back from gate to gate in the camp, and kill, each man his brother, and each man his companion, and each man his relative.'" 28 And the sons of Levi did as Moses said, and of the people there fell on that day about three thousand men. 29 And Moses said, "Fill your hands today for Shema, for each man [has stood] against his son and against his brother, so that a blessing may be given to you today." 30 And on the next day Moses said to the people, "You have incurred a great sin. And now I will go up to Shema; perhaps I can win forgiveness for your sins." 31 And Moses went back to Shema and said, "Look, this people has incurred a great sin and made themselves gods of gold. 32 And now, if you will forgive their sin, forgive; and if not, wipe me out of your book that you have written." 33 And Shema said to Moses, "Whoever has sinned against me, I will wipe him out of my book. 34 And now go, lead the people to [the place] that I told you of. And look, my messenger will go ahead of you; and on the day I take account, I will hold their sin against them." 35 And Shema struck the people with a plague because of what they did with the calf that Aaron made.
1 And Shema spoke with Moses, saying, "Go, go up from here, you and the people whom you brought up from the land of Egypt, to the land that I swore to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob, saying, 'To your offspring I will give it.' 2 And I will send a messenger ahead of you and drive out the Canaanite, the Amorite, the Hittite, the Girgashite, the Perizzite, the Hivite and the Jebusite, 3 to a land flowing with milk and honey, for I will not go out among you, because you are a stiff-necked people, or I might finish you off on the way." 4 And the people heard this bad news, and they mourned, and no one put his ornament on himself. 5 And Shema said to Moses, "Say to the children of Israel, 'You are a stiff-necked people. [If] I go up among you for one moment, I will finish you off. So now take your ornament off yourselves, and I will know what to do with you.'" 6 And the children of Israel stripped themselves of their ornament from Mount Horeb [on]. 7 And Moses took the dwelling and pitched it outside the camp, far from the camp, and he called it the tent of meeting. And all who sought Shema would go out to the tent of meeting that was outside the camp. 8 And whenever Moses went out to the dwelling, all the people would get up and take their stand, each at the entrance of his dwelling, and they watched Moses until he went into the dwelling. 9 And whenever Moses went into the dwelling, the pillar of cloud came down and stood at the entrance of the dwelling, and [Shema] spoke with Moses. 10 And all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance of the dwelling, and all the people got up and bowed down, each at the entrance of his dwelling. 11 And Shema spoke with Moses face to face, the way a person speaks with his friend. And he went back to the camp, but his attendant Joshua son of Nun, a young man, did not leave the dwelling. 12 And Moses said to Shema, "See, you tell me, 'Bring up this people,' but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. Yet you said, 'I know you by name, and you have also found favor in my eyes.' 13 And now, if I have indeed found favor in your eyes, let me know your ways, please, so that I may know you, in order to find favor in your eyes. And see that this nation is your people." 14 And he said, "My presence will go, and I will give you rest." 15 And he said to him, "If your presence is not going, do not bring me up from here. 16 And by what, then, will it be known that I have found favor in your eyes, I and your people? Is it not by your going with us, so that we are set apart, I and your people, from every people on the face of the earth?" 17 And Shema said to Moses, "This thing too that you have spoken of I will do, for you have found favor in my eyes, and I know you by name." 18 And he said, "Show me your glory, please." 19 And he said, "I will make all my goodness pass in front of you, and I will call out the name of Shema before you; and I will show favor to whom I show favor, and I will have mercy on whom I have mercy." 20 And he said, "You cannot see my face, for no human being will see me and live." 21 And Shema said, "Here is a place beside me, and you will stand on the rock. 22 And as my glory passes, I will set you in the cleft of the rock and cover you with my palm until I have passed. 23 Then I will take my palm away, and you will see my back, but my front will not be seen."
1 Shema said to Moses, "Carve two stone tablets for yourself like the first ones, and on the tablets I will write the words that were on the first tablets, which you broke. 2 Be ready by morning, and go up in the morning to Mount Sinai, and take your stand before me there on the top of the mountain. 3 No one is to go up with you, and no one is to be seen on the whole mountain either, and the sheep and the cattle are not to graze in front of that mountain.” 4 So Moses carved two stone tablets like the first ones, rose early in the morning and went up Mount Sinai, as Shema had commanded him, and he took the two stone tablets in his hand. 5 And Shema came down in the cloud and stood with him there, and called out the name. 6 And Shema passed in front of him and called out, “Shema, Shema, a merciful and compassionate God, far from anger, and great in kindness and truth, 7 keeping kindness for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, yet he will by no means acquit [the guilty], visiting the iniquity of fathers on sons and on sons’ sons, on the third and on the fourth [generation].” 8 And Moses hurried, bowed to the ground and worshiped. 9 He said, “If I have now found love in your eyes, my Lord, let my Lord go among us, please, for it is a stiff-necked people; forgive our iniquities and our sins, and make us your possession.” 10 And he said, “Here I am establishing a covenant before all your people. I will do wonders that have not been created in all the earth or in any of the nations, and all the people among whom you are will see the work of Shema, for what I am doing with you is awe-inspiring. 11 Keep for yourself what I am commanding you today. I am driving out from before you the Canaanite, the Amorite, the Hittite, the Girgashite, the Perizzite, the Hivite and the Jebusite. 12 Guard yourself so that you do not make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land you are entering, so that it does not become a snare among you. 13 Instead, you are to tear down their altars, smash their pillars and uproot their groves. 14 For you are not to bow down to another god, for Shema, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God. 15 Do not make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, for they will prostitute themselves after their gods and sacrifice to their gods, and someone will invite you and you will eat from his sacrifice, 16 and you will take some of his daughters for your sons, and his daughters will prostitute themselves after their gods and lead your sons to prostitute themselves after their gods. 17 Do not make cast gods for yourself. 18 Keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread. For seven days you are to eat unleavened bread, as I commanded you, at the set time in the month of Abib, for in it you went out from Egypt. 19 Everything that opens the womb is mine, and from all your livestock you are to dedicate [the males], the first to open [the womb] of ox and of lamb. 20 The firstborn of a donkey you are to redeem with a lamb, and if you do not redeem it, you are to break its neck. Every firstborn human among your sons you are to redeem. No one is to be seen before me empty-handed. 21 For six days you are to work, and on the seventh day you are to rest; at plowing time and at harvest you are to rest. 22 You are to hold the Feast of Weeks, the first fruits of the wheat harvest, and the Feast of Gathering at the turn of the year. 23 Three times in the year all your males are to be seen in front of the ark of Shema, the God of Israel. 24 For I will drive out many nations from before you and widen your border, and no one will covet your land when you go up to be seen before Shema your God three times in the year. 25 Do not slaughter the blood of my sacrifice with leavened bread, and the sacrifice of the Passover feast is not to remain overnight until morning. 26 Bring the very first of the first fruits of your land to the house of Shema your God. Do not cook a young goat in its mother’s milk.” 27 And Shema said to Moses, “Write these words down for yourself, for on the basis of these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.” 28 He was there before Shema forty days and forty nights; he did not eat bread and did not drink water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the ten words. 29 As Moses descended from Mount Sinai, the two tablets of the testimony in his hand, as he was coming down the mountain, he was unaware that the radiance of his face was gleaming because he had been speaking with him. 30 Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, and the radiance of his face was gleaming, and they were afraid to come near him. 31 But Moses called to them, and Aaron and all the leaders in the assembly came back to him, and Moses spoke with them. 32 Afterward all the children of Israel came near him, and he commanded them everything Shema had spoken with him on Mount Sinai. 33 When Moses finished speaking with them, he put a veil over his face. 34 Whenever Moses went in before Shema to speak with him, he would take off the veil until he came out, and he would come out and tell the children of Israel everything he had been commanded. 35 The children of Israel would see Moses’s face, that the skin of Moses’s face was shining, and he would put the veil back over his face until he went in to speak with him.
1 Moses gathered the whole congregation of the children of Israel and said to them, “These are the words Shema has commanded you to carry out. 2 For six days work is to be done, but the seventh day is to be holy for you, a Sabbath of rest to Shema. Whoever does work on it is to be put to death. 3 Do not light a fire in any of your homes on the Sabbath day.” 4 Moses said to the whole congregation of the children of Israel, “This is the word Shema has commanded: 5 Take a contribution for Shema from among you. Everyone whose heart is willing is to bring Shema’s contribution: gold, silver and bronze; 6 blue, purple and scarlet dye, fine linen and goats’ [hair]; 7 rams’ skins dyed red, dark skins and acacia wood; 8 oil for the lighting, and spices for the anointing oil and for the burning of the spices; 9 onyx stones and stones for setting, for the ephod and for the breastpiece. 10 Let everyone among you who is skilled come and make everything Shema has commanded: 11 the tabernacle, its tent and its covering, its clasps, its boards, its bars, its pillars and its bases; 12 the ark and its poles, the cover, and the curtain of the screen; 13 the table, its poles, all its utensils and the bread of the presence; 14 the lampstand for the light, all its utensils and the oil for the light; 15 the altar of incense and its poles, the anointing oil, the burning of the spices, and the screen for the doorway at the entrance of the tabernacle; 16 the altar of burnt offering with its bronze grating, its poles and all its utensils, the basin and its stand; 17 the hangings of the courtyard, its pillars and its bases, and the screen for the gate of the courtyard; 18 the pegs of the tabernacle, the pegs of the courtyard and their ropes; 19 the garments of service for serving in the sanctuary, the holy garments for Aaron the priest, and the garments of his sons for serving as priests.” 20 Then the whole congregation of the children of Israel went out from Moses’s presence. 21 Everyone whose heart lifted him and everyone whose spirit moved him came and brought Shema’s contribution for the work of the tent of meeting, for all its service and for the holy garments. 22 The men came with the women; all who were willing brought brooches, earrings, rings and necklaces, all kinds of gold objects, everyone who presented a wave offering of gold to Shema. 23 Everyone who had blue, purple or scarlet dye, fine linen, goats’ [hair], rams’ skins dyed red or dark skins brought them. 24 Everyone who set aside a contribution of silver or bronze brought it as Shema’s contribution, and everyone who had acacia wood for the labor of the work brought it. 25 Every skilled woman spun with her hands, and they brought what they had spun: the blue, the purple, the scarlet dye and the fine linen. 26 All the women whose heart lifted them with skill spun the goats’ [hair]. 27 The leaders brought the onyx stones and the stones for setting, for the ephod and for the breastpiece, 28 and the spices and the oil, the oil for the lighting, and for the anointing oil and for the burning of the spices. 29 Every man and woman whose heart made them willing to bring something for all the work that Shema had commanded through Moses to be done — the children of Israel brought it as a freewill gift to Shema. 30 Moses said to the children of Israel, “See, Shema has called by name Bezalel son of Uri son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. 31 He has filled him with the spirit of God, with wisdom, with insight, with knowledge and with every kind of work, 32 to devise designs, to work in gold, silver and bronze, 33 in the craft of cutting stone for setting and in the craft of wood, to work at every kind of design. 34 And he has put [the ability] to teach in his heart, both he and Oholiab son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan. 35 He has filled them with skill to do every kind of work of the craftsman, the designer and the embroiderer in blue, purple and scarlet dye and fine linen, and of the weaver — those who do every kind of work and devise designs.”
1 So Bezalel and Oholiab worked, with every wise-hearted man in whom Shema had put wisdom and insight to know how to carry out all the work of the service of the sanctuary, in keeping with everything Shema had commanded. 2 Moses summoned Bezalel and Oholiab and every wise-hearted man in whose heart Shema had put wisdom, everyone whose heart lifted him to come near to the work and do it. 3 They took from before Moses the whole offering that the children of Israel had brought for the work of the service of the sanctuary, to carry it out; and still they kept bringing a freewill offering into his hand, morning after morning. 4 Then all the wise men who were doing all the work of the sanctuary came, each man from the work they were doing, 5 and they spoke with Moses, saying, "The people are bringing more and more, beyond the measure of the service for the work that Shema commanded to be done." 6 So Moses gave an order, and they sent a call through the camp, saying, "Let no man or woman do any more work for the offering of the sanctuary." And the people stopped bringing. 7 For the material was enough for all the work, to carry it out. 8 All the wise-hearted among those doing the work made the tabernacle: they made ten curtains of fine twined linen, blue, purple and scarlet dye, [with] figures; a designer's work he made them. 9 The length of one curtain was twenty-eight by the cubit, and the breadth of one curtain four by the cubit; all the curtains shared a single measure. 10 He joined five curtains one to another. 11 He made loops of blue on the hem of the one curtain at the outer end of the joining, and he did the same on the hem of the outer curtain in the second joining. 12 Fifty loops he made in the one curtain, and fifty loops he made at the end of the curtain in the second joining, the loops facing one another. 13 He made fifty gold clasps and joined the curtains to one another with the clasps, and the tabernacle became one. 14 He made curtains of goats' [hair] as a covering over the tabernacle; eleven curtains he made them. 15 The length of one curtain was thirty by the cubit, and four cubits the breadth of one curtain; the eleven curtains shared a single measure. 16 He joined five curtains apart and six curtains apart. 17 He made fifty loops on the hem of the one curtain at the outer end of the joining, and fifty loops he made on the hem of the curtain of the second joining. 18 He made fifty bronze clasps to join the covering, so that it would be one. 19 He made a cover for the covering of rams' skins dyed red, and a cover of blackened skins on top. 20 He made the boards for the tabernacle of acacia wood, standing upright. 21 Ten cubits was the length of one board, and a cubit and half a cubit the breadth of one board. 22 One board had two tenons, fitted one into the other; so he made for all the boards of the tabernacle. 23 He made the boards for the tabernacle: twenty boards for the south side, toward the south. 24 Forty silver bases he made under the twenty boards: two bases under one board for its two tenons, and two bases under another board for its two tenons. 25 For the second side of the tabernacle, on the north side, he made twenty boards, 26 and their forty silver bases: two bases under one board and two bases under another board. 27 For the back of the tabernacle, toward the west, he made six boards. 28 Two boards he made for the corners of the tabernacle at its back. 29 They were paired at the bottom, and alike they were paired at the top, into the one ring; so he made both of them, for the two corners. 30 So there were eight boards, and their silver bases were sixteen bases, two bases and two bases beneath [each]. 31 They made bars of acacia wood, five for the boards of the one side of the tabernacle, 32 and five bars for the boards of the second side of the tabernacle, and five bars for the boards of the side of the tabernacle at its back, toward the west. 33 He made the middle bar to run through the middle of the boards from one end to the other. 34 The boards he overlaid with gold, and their rings he made of gold as places for the bars, and he overlaid the bars with gold. 35 He made a veil of blue, purple and scarlet dye and fine twined linen; a designer's work, he made it [with] figures. 36 He made four acacia pillars for it and overlaid them with gold, their hooks [of] gold, and he cast four silver bases for them. 37 He made a screen for the doorway of the tabernacle of blue, purple and scarlet dye and fine twined linen, embroiderer's work, 38 and its five pillars and their hooks; he overlaid their tops and their bands with gold, and their five bases [were] bronze.
1 Bezalel made the ark of acacia wood: two cubits [and a half its length, a cubit and a half its breadth, and a cubit] and a half its height. 2 He overlaid it with pure gold inside and out, and made a crown of gold for it all around. 3 He cast four gold rings for it on its four corners: two rings on its one side and two rings on its second side. 4 He made two acacia [poles] and overlaid them with gold. 5 He put the poles into the rings on the sides of the ark, to carry the ark with them. 6 He made a cover of pure gold, two cubits and a half its length and a cubit and a half its breadth. 7 He made two gold cherubim; hammered work he made them, from the two ends of the cover: 8 one cherub from the end on this side and one cherub from the end on that side; out of the cover he made the cherubim. 9 [The cherubim] were spreading their wings upward, shading the cover with their wings, their faces one toward the other; toward the cover were the faces of the cherubim. 10 He made the table of acacia wood: two cubits its length, a cubit its breadth, and a cubit and a half its height. 11 He overlaid it with pure gold and made a crown of gold for it all around. 12 He made a rim of a handbreadth for it all around, and made a gold crown for its rim all around. 13 He cast four gold rings and set the rings on the four corners belonging to its four legs. 14 In line with the rim were the rings, places for the poles to carry the table. 15 He made the poles of acacia wood and overlaid them with gold, to carry the table. 16 He made the utensils that were on the table, its dishes, its ladles, its basins and its cups that they pour with, of pure gold. 17 He made the lampstand of pure gold; hammered work he made the lampstand; its base, its stem, its cups, its knobs and its blossoms came out of it. 18 Six branches went out from its sides: three branches of the lampstand [from its one side, and three branches of the lampstand] from its second side. 19 Three cups shaped like almonds on one branch, a knob and a blossom, and three cups shaped like almonds on another branch, a knob and a blossom; so for the six branches that go out from the lampstand. 20 On the lampstand itself were four cups shaped like almonds, its knobs and its blossoms: 21 a knob under two branches out of it, a knob under two branches out of it, and a knob under two branches out of it, for the six branches that go out from it. 22 Their knobs and their branches came out of it; the whole of it was one hammered piece of pure gold. 23 He made its seven lamps, its tongs and its fire pans of pure gold. 24 Of a talent of pure gold he made it and all its utensils. 25 He made the altar of incense of acacia wood: a cubit its length and a cubit its breadth, square, and two cubits its height; its horns came out of it. 26 He overlaid it with pure gold, its roof and its walls all around and its horns, and made a crown of gold for it all around. 27 Two gold rings he made for it below its crown, on its two sides, on its two edges, as places for its poles to carry it with them. 28 He made the poles of acacia wood and overlaid them with gold. 29 He made the holy anointing oil and the pure incense of spices, the work of a blender.
1 He made the altar of burnt offering from acacia wood: five cubits long, five cubits wide, and three cubits high. 2 He made its horns on its four corners; its horns came out of it, and he plated it with bronze. 3 He made all the altar's utensils: the ash pots, the cauldrons, the bowls, the forks and the fire pans. He made all its utensils of bronze. 4 For the altar he made a grating, a net of bronze, beneath its ledge, from below up to its middle. 5 He cast four rings on its four corners for the poles. 6 He made the poles from acacia wood and plated them with bronze. 7 He put the poles through the rings on the sides of the altar to carry it by them. He made it hollow, of boards. 8 He made the basin of bronze and its stand of bronze from the mirrors of the hosts who gathered at the entrance of the tent of meeting. 9 He made the court. For the south side, southward, the hangings of the court were of fine twisted linen, a hundred cubits. 10 Its pillars were twenty and their bases twenty, and the hooks of the pillars and their bands were silver. 11 For the north side, a hundred cubits; their pillars twenty and their bases twenty, of bronze; the hooks of the pillars and their bands silver. 12 For the west side, hangings of fifty cubits; their pillars ten and their bases ten; the hooks of the pillars and their bands silver. 13 For the east side, toward the sunrise, fifty cubits. 14 Hangings of fifteen cubits for one side, their pillars three and their bases three; 15 and for the second side, on either side of the gate of the court, hangings of fifteen cubits, their pillars three and their bases three. 16 All the hangings of the court round about were of fine twisted linen. 17 The bases for the pillars were bronze, their hooks silver, and the plating of their tops silver; and all the pillars of the court were clothed with silver. 18 The screen for the gate of the court was embroiderer's work, of blue, purple, crimson dye and fine twisted linen. It was twenty cubits long, and its height across its width was five cubits, matching the hangings of the court. 19 Their pillars were four and their bases four, of bronze; their hooks silver, and the plating of their tops and their bands silver. 20 All the pegs for the tabernacle and for the court round about were bronze. 21 These are the counts of the tabernacle, the tabernacle of the testimony, which were counted at the word of Moses, [for] the service of the Levites, under the direction of Ithamar son of Aaron the priest. 22 Bezalel son of Uri son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, made everything that Shema had commanded Moses. 23 With him was Oholiab son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan, a craftsman, a designer and an embroiderer in blue, in purple, in crimson dye and in linen. 24 The gold used for the work, throughout all the work of the sanctuary, the gold of the wave offering, came to twenty-nine talents and seven hundred and thirty shekels by the sanctuary shekel. 25 The silver from those counted in the assembly came to a hundred talents and one thousand seven hundred and seventy-five shekels: 26 a beka per head, half a shekel by the sanctuary shekel, for everyone who passed into the count, from twenty years old and up, for six hundred and three thousand five hundred and fifty. 27 The hundred talents of silver were for casting the bases of the sanctuary and the bases of the curtain: a hundred bases for the hundred talents, a talent for each base. 28 From the one thousand seven hundred and seventy-five he made hooks for the pillars, plated their tops and clothed them. 29 The bronze of the wave offering came to seventy talents and two thousand four hundred shekels. 30 With it he made the bases for the entrance of the tent of meeting, the bronze altar, the bronze grating that belongs to the altar, and all the altar's utensils, 31 the bases of the court round about, the bases of the gate of the court, all the pegs of the tabernacle, and all the pegs of the court round about.
1 From the blue, the purple and the crimson dye they made garments of service for serving in the sanctuary, and they made the holy garments for Aaron, as Shema had commanded Moses. 2 They made the ephod of gold, blue, purple, crimson dye and fine twisted linen. 3 They hammered out the sheets of gold and cut threads to work into the blue, the purple, the crimson dye and the linen, a designer's work. 4 He made shoulder pieces for it, fastened on; it was fastened at its two ends. 5 The band of the ephod that was on it was of one piece with it and of the same work: gold, blue, purple, crimson dye and fine twisted linen, as Shema had commanded Moses. 6 They made the onyx stones, set in settings of gold, engraved as a seal is engraved, with the names of the sons of Israel. 7 They placed them on the shoulder pieces of the ephod as stones of remembrance for the sons of Israel, as Shema had commanded Moses. 8 They made the breastpiece, a designer's work, like the work of the ephod: gold, blue, purple, crimson dye and fine twisted linen. 9 It was square. He made the breastpiece folded double, a span long and a span wide. 10 They set four rows of stones in it. The first row: adam, dahta and arbaq. 11 The second row: ebar, abar and ebarbar. 12 The third row: a red [stone], a ruddy [stone] and a reddish [stone]. 13 The fourth row: a black [stone], a dark [stone] and a darkish [stone], set in settings of gold in their mountings. 14 The stones followed the names of the sons of Israel; they were twelve, following their names, engraved as a seal, each with his name, for the twelve tribes. 15 On the breastpiece they made chains of braided cord work, of pure gold. 16 They made two settings of gold and two rings of gold, and put the two rings on the two ends of the breastpiece. 17 They put the two gold cords through the two rings at the ends of the breastpiece. 18 The two ends of the two cords they put on the two settings, and they placed them on the shoulder pieces of the ephod, at its front. 19 They made two rings of gold and placed them on the two ends of the breastpiece, on its edge that lies against the joining of the ephod, on the inside. 20 He made two rings of gold and put them on the two shoulder pieces of the ephod, low down at its front, alongside its joining, above the band of the ephod. 21 They tied the breastpiece by its rings to the rings of the ephod with a cord of blue, so that it would sit on the band of the ephod and the breastpiece would not come loose from the ephod, as Shema had commanded Moses. They made the Lights and the Perfections, as Shema had commanded Moses. 22 He made the robe, woven work, entirely of blue. 23 The opening of the robe was in its middle, like the opening of a coat of mail, with a binding round its opening so that it would not tear. 24 On the hems of the robe he made pomegranates of blue, purple, crimson dye and twisted linen. 25 They made bells of pure gold and put the bells on the hems of the robe round about, between the pomegranates: 26 a gold bell and a pomegranate, a gold bell and a pomegranate, on the hems of the robe round about, for serving, as Shema had commanded Moses. 27 They made the tunics of linen, woven work, for Aaron and his sons, 28 the turban of linen, the decorated caps of linen, and the linen trousers of fine twisted linen, 29 and the sash of fine twisted linen, blue, purple and crimson dye, embroiderer's work, as Shema had commanded Moses. 30 They made the plate of the holy crown of pure gold and wrote on it an inscription engraved as a seal: "Holy to Shema." 31 They attached a cord of blue to it to fasten it on the turban above, as Shema had commanded Moses. 32 All the service of the tabernacle, the tent of meeting, was completed. The sons of Israel did as Shema had commanded Moses; so they did. 33 They brought the tabernacle to Moses: the tent and all its furnishings, its clasps, its boards, its bars, its pillars and their bases, 34 the covering of red-dyed rams' skins, the covering of black skins, and the curtain of the screen, 35 the ark of the testimony with its poles, and the atonement cover, 36 the table with all its utensils and the bread of the presence, 37 the pure lampstand with its lamps, the lamps set in order, all its utensils, and the oil for the light, 38 the gold altar, the anointing oil, the incense of spices, and the screen for the entrance of the tabernacle, 39 the altar of burnt offering with its bronze grating, its poles and all its utensils, the basin and its stand, 40 the hangings of the court, its pillars and its bases, the screen for the gate of the court, its ropes and its pegs, and all the utensils for the service of the tabernacle, for the tent of meeting, 41 the garments of service for serving in the sanctuary, the holy garments for Aaron the priest, and the garments of his sons for serving as priests. 42 The sons of Israel did all the work just as Shema had commanded Moses. 43 Moses saw all the labor, and they had done it; as Shema had commanded, so they had done. And Moses blessed them.
1 Shema spoke with Moses and said, 2 "On the day of the first month, on the first of the month, you are to set up the tabernacle, the tent of meeting. 3 Place the ark of the testimony there, and shade the ark over with the ark-cover. 4 Bring in the table and lay out its arrangement; bring in the lampstand and light its lamps. 5 Set the gold altar for burning incense in front of the ark of the testimony, and put up the screen at the door of the tabernacle. 6 Set the altar of burnt offering in front of the door of the tabernacle, the tent of meeting. 7 Set the basin between the tent of meeting and the altar, and put water there. 8 Set up the court all around, and put up the screen at the gate of the court. 9 Take some of the anointing oil and anoint the tabernacle and everything in it; consecrate it and all its vessels, and it will be holy. 10 Anoint the altar of burnt offering and all its vessels; consecrate the altar, and the altar will be most holy. 11 Anoint the basin and its stand, and consecrate it. 12 Bring Aaron and his sons to the door of the tent of meeting, and wash them in the water. 13 Dress Aaron in the holy garments, anoint him and consecrate him, and he will serve me as priest. 14 Bring his sons forward and dress them in tunics. 15 Anoint them just as you anointed their father, and they will serve me as priests. Their anointing will be theirs as a priesthood forever, throughout their generations." 16 Moses did everything Shema had commanded him; that is what he did. 17 In the first month of the second year after they came out of Egypt, on the first of the month, the tabernacle was set up. 18 Moses set up the tabernacle: he laid its sockets, placed its boards, put in its bars and set up its pillars. 19 He spread the tent over the tabernacle and put the covering of the tent on top of it, as Shema had commanded Moses. 20 He took the testimony and put it inside the ark, placed the poles on the ark, and put the ark-cover on top of the ark. 21 He brought the ark into the tabernacle, set up the veil that screens, and shaded over the ark of the testimony, as Shema had commanded Moses. 22 He placed the table in the tent of meeting on the north side of the tabernacle, outside the veil. 23 He laid out an arrangement of bread on it before Shema, as Shema had commanded Moses. 24 He placed the lampstand in the tent of meeting, opposite the table, on the south side of the tabernacle. 25 He lit the lamps before Shema, as Shema had commanded Moses. 26 He placed the gold altar in the tent of meeting in front of the veil, 27 and burned fragrant incense on it before Shema, as Shema had commanded Moses. 28 He put up the screen at the door of the tabernacle. 29 The altar of burnt offering he placed in front of the door of the tabernacle, the tent of meeting, and he offered the burnt offering and the grain offering on it, as Shema had commanded Moses. 30 He placed the basin between the tent of meeting and the altar, and put water in it for washing. 31 Moses, Aaron and his sons washed their hands and their feet from it. 32 Whenever they entered the tent of meeting and whenever they approached the altar, they washed, as Shema had commanded Moses. 33 He set up the court all around the tabernacle and the altar, and put up the screen at the gate of the court. So Moses completed all the work. 34 The cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of Shema filled the tabernacle. 35 Moses could not go into the tent of meeting, because the cloud rested on it and the glory of Shema filled the tabernacle. 36 Whenever the cloud lifted from over the tabernacle, the children of Israel would set out, on all their journeys. 37 But if the cloud did not lift, they would not set out until the day it lifted. 38 For the cloud of Shema was over the tabernacle by day, and fire was in it at night, before the eyes of the whole house of Israel, on all their journeys.
