Chapter 1

1 These are the words that Moses spoke with all Israel across the Jordan, in the wilderness, in the plain, opposite Suph, between Paran and Tophel, Laban, Hazeroth and Di-dehab. 2 It is eleven days from Horeb by way of Mount Gebala to Kadesh-barnea. 3 In the fortieth year, in the eleventh month, on the first of the month, Moses spoke with the children of Israel according to all that Shema had commanded him for them, 4 after he had killed Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and Og king of Bathnin, who lived in Ashtaroth, at Edrei. 5 Across the Jordan, in the land of Moab, Moses set about explaining this law, saying: 6 "Shema our God spoke with us at Horeb, saying, 'You have stayed on this mountain long enough. 7 Turn and set out, and go to the mountain of the Amorites and to all its settlements, in the plain, in the mountain and in the lowland, in the south and on the coast of the sea, the land of the Canaanites, and Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates. 8 See, I have given the land over to you. Go in and inherit the land that I swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob, to give to their descendants after them.' 9 At that time I said to you, 'I cannot carry you by myself. 10 Shema your God has multiplied you, and here you are today as many as the stars of the sky. 11 May Shema the God of your fathers add to you a thousand times as many as you are, and bless you as he has told you. 12 How can I alone carry your trouble, your load and your quarrels? 13 Provide for yourselves wise, alert and experienced men for your tribes, and I will set them as your heads.' 14 You answered me and said, 'What you have told [us] to do is good.' 15 So I took the heads of your tribes, men who were wise and experienced, and set them as heads over you: chiefs of thousands, chiefs of hundreds, chiefs of fifties, chiefs of tens, and scribes for your tribes. 16 At that time I instructed your judges, saying, 'Listen [to cases] between your brothers, and judge truly between a man and his kinsman and the foreigner living with him. 17 Do not show favoritism in judgment. Hear the small and the great alike. Do not be terrified before anyone, for judgment belongs to God. Any matter too hard for you, bring to me and I will hear it.' 18 At that time I commanded you all the things you were to do. 19 We set out from Horeb and went through all that great and fearsome wilderness that you saw, by way of the mountain of the Amorites, as Shema our God had commanded us, and we came to Kadesh-barnea. 20 I said to you, 'You have come to the mountain of the Amorites, which Shema our God is giving us. 21 See, Shema your God has given the land over to you. Go up and take possession, as Shema the God of your fathers told you. Do not be afraid or dismayed.' 22 Then all of you came to me and said, 'Let us send men ahead of us to explore the land for us and bring us back word about the road we should go up by and the cities we will enter.' 23 The plan seemed good to me, and I took twelve men from among you, one man for each tribe. 24 They turned and went up into the mountain, came to the valley of Eshcol, and spied it out. 25 They took some of the fruit of the land in their hands and brought it down to us. They brought us back word and said, 'The land that Shema our God is giving us is good.' 26 But you were unwilling to go up, and you rebelled against the word of Shema your God. 27 You grumbled in your tents and said, 'Because Shema hates us he brought us out of the land of Egypt, to hand us over to the Amorites to destroy us. 28 Where are we going up to? Our brothers have made our hearts sink, saying, "The people are greater and more numerous than we are, the cities are large and walled up high, and we even saw the sons of the Anakim there."' 29 I said to you, 'Do not be terrified, and do not be afraid of them. 30 Shema your God, who goes ahead of you, will fight for you, just as he did for you in Egypt before your eyes, 31 and in the wilderness, where you saw how Shema your God carried you as a man carries his son, all along the road you traveled until you came to this place.' 32 Yet in this matter you did not trust Shema your God, 33 who goes ahead of you on the road to find you a place to camp, in fire by night to show you the road you should take, and in the cloud by day. 34 Shema heard the sound of your words, grew angry, and swore, saying, 35 'Not one man among these men of this evil generation will [see] the good land that I swore to your fathers, 36 except Caleb son of Jephunneh. He will see it, and I will give the land he has walked on to him and to his sons. See, he has followed Shema fully.' 37 Shema was angry with me too because of you, saying, 'You too will not go in there. 38 Joshua son of Nun, who stands before you, will go in there. Strengthen him, for he will lead Israel to inherit it. 39 Your little ones, who you said would become plunder, and your sons will go in there. I will give it to them, and they will inherit it. 40 But you, turn and set out into the wilderness by way of the Sea of Suf.' 41 You answered and said to me, 'We have sinned against Shema our God. We will go up and fight, just as Shema our God commanded us.' Each man of you strapped on his weapons of war, and you made bold to go up into the mountain. 42 Shema said to me, 'Tell them, "Do not go up and do not fight, for I am not among you, so that you are not broken before your enemies."' 43 I spoke to you, but you did not listen. You rebelled against the word of Shema your God, and defiantly went up into the mountain. 44 The Amalekites and the Canaanites who lived on that mountain came out to meet you. They chased you as bees do and crushed you in Gebala as far as Hormah. 45 You came back and wept before Shema, but Shema did not hear your voice or listen to you. 46 So you stayed in Kadesh many days, as many days as you stayed [there].

Chapter 2

1 Then we turned and set out for the wilderness by the way of the Sea of Suf, as Shema had spoken to me, and we went around Mount Gebala for many days. 2 And Shema said to me: 3 "You have gone around this mountain long enough; turn northward. 4 And command the people: You are passing through the territory of your brothers, the sons of Esau, who live in Gebala, and they will be afraid of you; so guard yourselves carefully. 5 Do not stir up a quarrel with them, for I will not give you any of their land as an inheritance, not even as much as the sole of a foot treads on, for I have given Mount Gebala to Esau as an inheritance. 6 You shall buy provisions from them with silver and eat, and you shall also purchase water from them with silver and drink. 7 For Shema your God has blessed all the work of your hands; he knows of your journey across this great wilderness. For these forty years Shema your God has been with you, and you have lacked nothing." Then I sent messengers to the king of Edom with this message: "Let me pass through your land. I will not go through field or vineyard; we will not drink the water of a cistern. We will travel by the king's road and not turn aside to the right or the left until we have passed through your territory." But he said, "You shall not pass through me, or I will come out against you with the sword." 8 So we passed on from our brothers the sons of Esau, who live in Gebala, away from the road of the plain, from Elath and from Ezion-geber; and we turned and passed on. 9 And Shema said to me, "Do not harass Moab and do not stir up a quarrel with him, for I will not give you any of his land as an inheritance, for I have given Arsha to the sons of Lot as an inheritance." 10 The Emim lived there formerly, a people great and numerous and tall, like the Anakim. 11 [Brüll's text lacks this verse.] 12 And in Gebala the Horites lived formerly, but the sons of Esau dispossessed them, and Shema destroyed them before them, and they dispossessed them and settled in their place, as Israel did to the land of its inheritance which Shema gave them. 13 "Now arise, set out, and cross the stream of Zered." And we crossed the stream of Zered. 14 And the time that we traveled from Kadesh-barnea until we crossed the stream of Zered was thirty-eight years, until the whole generation of the men of war had come to an end from within the camp, as Shema had sworn to them. 15 Moreover, the hand of Shema [was against] the [men of] war from within the camp, as Shema had sworn to them; the hand of Shema was against them, to wipe them out from within the camp until they were finished. 16 And when all the men of war had come to an end, dying from among the people, 17 Shema said to me: 18 "Today you are crossing the border of Moab, Arsha, 19 and you will draw near, opposite the sons of Ammon. Do not harass them and do not stir up a quarrel with them, for I will not give you any of the land of the sons of Ammon as an inheritance, for I have given it to the sons of Lot as an inheritance." 20 It too is reckoned a land of the Afaim; Afaim lived there formerly, and the Ammonites call them Zamzummim, 21 a people great and numerous and tall, like the Anakim; but Shema destroyed them before them, and they dispossessed them and settled in their place, 22 as he did for the sons of Esau who live in Gebala, when he destroyed the Horites before them, and they dispossessed them and settled in their place to this day. 23 And the Avvim, who lived in the villages as far as Gaza: the Caphtorim, who came out of Caphtor, destroyed them and settled in their place. 24 "Arise, set out, and cross the stream of Arnon. See, I have given Sihon king of Heshbon, the Amorite, and his land into your hand. Begin to inherit, and draw up for battle against him. 25 This day I begin to put the terror and the fear of you upon the peoples under all the heavens, who will hear the report of you and will quake and tremble before you." 26 And I sent messengers from the wilderness of Kedemoth to Sihon king of Heshbon with words of peace, saying, 27 "Let me pass through your land. I will keep to the road, to the road; I will not turn aside to the right or the left. 28 You shall sell me food for silver and I will eat, and give me water for silver and I will drink; only let me pass through on foot, 29 as the sons of Esau who live in Gebala and the Moabites who live in Arsha did for me, until I cross the Jordan into the land that Shema our God is giving us." 30 But Sihon king of Heshbon was not willing to let us pass through his land, for Shema your God hardened his spirit and made his heart stubborn, in order to give him into your hand, as at this day. 31 And Shema said to me, "See, I have begun to give Sihon king of Heshbon, the Amorite, and his land over to you. Begin to inherit, so as to take possession of his land." 32 And Sihon came out to meet us, he and all his people, for battle at Jahaz. 33 And Shema our God gave him over to us, and we killed him and his sons and all his people. 34 And we captured all his cities at that time, and we devoted all his cities to destruction entirely, the women and the little ones; we left no survivor. 35 Only the cattle we took as plunder for ourselves, and the spoil of the cities that we captured. 36 From Aroer, which is on the edge of the stream of Arnon, and the city that is in the stream, as far as Gilead, there was not a town that could hold out against us; Shema our God gave all of it into our hand. 37 Only to the land of the sons of Ammon you did not draw near: the whole bank of the stream of Jabbok, the cities of the hill country, and everything about which Shema our God commanded us.

Chapter 3

1 Then we turned and went up by the way to Bathnin, and Og king of Bathnin came out to meet us, he and all his people, for battle at Edrei. 2 And Shema said to me, "Do not be afraid of him, for into your hand I have given him, with all his people and his land, and you shall do to him as you did to Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon." 3 So Shema our God gave Og king of Bathnin into our hand as well, and all his people, and we killed him until no survivor was left to him. 4 And we captured all his cities at that time; there was no city that we did not take from them: sixty cities, the whole territory of Rigoba, the kingdom of Og in Bathnin. 5 All these were cities fortified with a high wall, doors and bars, besides the unwalled towns, a great many. 6 And we devoted them to destruction, as we had done to Sihon king of Heshbon, devoting every city to destruction entirely, the women and the little ones. 7 And all the cattle and the spoil of the cities we took as plunder for ourselves. 8 And at that time we took the land from the hand of the two kings of the Amorites who were beyond the Jordan, from the stream of Arnon to Mount Hermon. 9 The Sidonians call Hermon Rabban, and the Amorites call it Mashabran: 10 all the cities of the plain, all Gilead and all Bathnin, as far as Salecah and Edrei, cities of the kingdom of Og in Bathnin. 11 For only Og king of Bathnin was left of the remnant of the mighty ones. See, his bed was a bed of iron; is it not in Rabbah of the sons of Ammon? Nine cubits was its length and four cubits its width, by a man's cubit. 12 And this land we inherited at that time: from Aroer, which is on the edge of the stream of Arnon, and half the hill country of Gilead with its cities, I gave to the Reubenites and the Gadites. 13 And the rest of Gilead and all Bathnin, the kingdom of Og, I gave to the half-tribe of Manasseh: all the territory of Rigoba. All that Bathnin is called the land of the Afaim. 14 Jair son of Manasseh took all the territory of Rigoba as far as the territory of the Geshurites and the Maacathites, and he named them after himself, Bathnin, Havvoth-jair, to this day. 15 And to Machir I gave Gilead. 16 And to the Reubenites and the Gadites I gave from Gilead as far as the stream of Arnon, the middle of the stream and [its] border, as far as the Jabbok, the stream that is the border of the sons of Ammon, 17 and the plain and the Jordan and [its] border, from Gennesar as far as the sea of the plain, the Salt Sea, below the slopes of Sekhita, to the east. 18 And I commanded you at that time, saying, "Shema your God has given you this land to inherit it. You shall cross over armed before your brothers the sons of Israel, all the valiant men. 19 Only your little ones, your wives and your livestock (I know that you have much livestock) shall stay in your cities which I have given you, 20 until Shema gives rest to your brothers as to you, and they too inherit the land which Shema your God is giving them beyond the Jordan. Then you shall return, each man to his inheritance which I have given you." 21 And I commanded Joshua at that time, saying, "Your eyes have seen what Shema did to these two kings; so Shema will do to all the kingdoms into which you are crossing. 22 Do not be afraid of them, for Shema your God is the one who fights for you." 23 And I pleaded with Shema at that time, saying, 24 "My Lord Shema, you have begun to let your servant see your greatness and your strong hand; for is there any god in heaven or on earth who can do anything like your works and your mighty deeds? 25 Let me cross over, I beg you, and see the good land that is beyond the Jordan, this good mountain, and Lebanon." 26 But Shema was angry at my plea because of you and would not listen to me. And Shema said to me, "Enough for you; do not speak to me any more about this matter. 27 Go up to the top of Sekhita and lift up your eyes to the west and the north and the south and the east, and look with your eyes, for you shall not cross this Jordan. 28 And command Joshua, and strengthen him and encourage him, for he shall cross over before this people, and he shall give them the land that you will see as an inheritance." 29 And we stayed in the valley opposite Beth-peor.

Chapter 4

1 And now, Israel, hear the statutes and the rulings that I am teaching you to carry out, so that you may live and go in and inherit the land that Shema, the God of your fathers, is giving you. 2 Do not add to the word that I am commanding you today, and do not take anything away from it, so as to keep the commandments of Shema your God that I am commanding you. 3 Your eyes saw what Shema did at Baal Peor: every man who went after Baal Peor, Shema your God wiped out from among you. 4 But you who draw near to Shema your God are alive, every one of you, today. 5 See, I have taught you statutes and rulings, as Shema my God commanded me, so that you would act on them within the land you are entering to inherit it. 6 Keep them and carry them out, for that is your wisdom and your understanding in the eyes of the peoples who will hear all these statutes and say, "This great nation is nothing but a wise and understanding people." 7 For what great nation is there that has gods so close to it as Shema our God is whenever we call to him? 8 And what great nation has statutes and rulings as just as all this law that I am setting before you today? 9 Only guard yourself and keep your soul firmly, so that you do not forget the things your eyes saw, and so that they do not slip from your heart all the days of your life; and teach them to your children and your children's children. 10 The day you stood before Shema your God at Horeb, when Shema said to me, "Gather the people to me, and I will let them hear my words, so that they learn to fear me all the days they live on the earth, and so that they teach their children." 11 And you came near and stood at the foot of the mountain, and the mountain was blazing with fire up to the heart of the heavens, [with] darkness, cloud and deep gloom. 12 Then Shema spoke with you from inside the fire. You were hearing the sound of words, but you saw no likeness, nothing but a voice. 13 And he gave you his covenant, which he commanded you to carry out, the ten words, and he wrote them on two tablets of stone. 14 And Shema commanded me at that time to teach you statutes and rulings, so that you would carry them out in the land you are entering to inherit it. 15 So guard yourselves firmly, for you did not see any likeness on the day Shema spoke with you at Horeb from inside the fire, 16 so that you do not act corruptly and make yourselves a carved image, the likeness of any shape, the likeness of a male or a female, 17 the likeness of any animal that is on the earth, the likeness of any winged bird that flies in the open sky, 18 the likeness of anything that creeps on the earth, the likeness of any fish that is in the water below the earth, 19 and so that you do not raise your eyes to the heavens and see the sun and the moon and the stars, all the host of the heavens, and go astray and bow down to them and serve them, [things] that Shema your God has allotted to all the peoples under all the heavens. 20 But Shema took you and brought you out of the iron furnace, out of Egypt, to be a people of his own portion, as on this day. 21 And Shema was angry with me because of your words, so that I would not cross the Jordan and would not enter the good land that Shema your God is giving you as a portion. 22 For I am dying in this land; I am not crossing the Jordan, but you are crossing and will inherit this good land. 23 Guard yourselves, so that you do not forget the covenant of Shema your God that he made with you, and make yourselves a carved image, the likeness of anything Shema your God has commanded you [against]. 24 For Shema your God is a consuming fire; he is a jealous God. 25 When you have children and grandchildren and have grown old in the land, and act corruptly and make a carved image, the likeness of anything, and do what is evil in the sight of Shema your God, to provoke him to anger, 26 I call the heavens and the earth to witness against you today that you will be quickly and utterly lost from the land that you are crossing the Jordan to go and inherit. You will not live long on it, but will be utterly wiped out. 27 And Shema will scatter you among the peoples, and you will be left few in number among the nations where Shema drives you. 28 And there you will serve gods made by human hands, wood and stone, which do not see or hear or eat or smell. 29 And from there you will seek Shema your God, and you will find him when you seek him with all your heart and with all your soul. 30 When you are in distress and all these things come upon you in the last of the days, you will turn back to attend on Shema your God and listen to his voice. 31 For Shema your God is a merciful God; he will not let you go or destroy you, and he will not forget the covenant of your fathers that he swore to them. 32 For ask about the former days that were before you, from the day God created man on the earth, and from one edge of the heavens to the other edge of the heavens, whether anything has happened like this great thing, or whether anything like it has been heard. 33 Has a people ever heard the voice of the living God speaking from inside the fire, as you have heard, and lived? 34 Or has God ever tried to come and take for himself a nation out of the midst of a nation, by trials, by signs and by wonders, and by war, by a strong hand and an outstretched arm, and by great visions, as Shema your God did for you in Egypt before your eyes? 35 You were shown this so that you would know that Shema is God; there is no other apart from him. 36 From the heavens he made you hear his voice to discipline you, and on the earth he showed you his great fire, and you heard his words from inside the fire. 37 And because he loved your fathers and chose their descendants after them, he brought you out of Egypt by his spirit and by his great strength, 38 to drive out from before you nations greater and stronger than you, to bring you in and give you their land as a portion, as on this day. 39 So know today, and let it settle in your heart, that Shema is God in the heavens above and on the earth below; there is no other. 40 And keep his statutes and his commandments that I am commanding you today, so that it may go well with you and with your children after you, and so that you may live long on the land that Shema your God is giving you for all time. 41 Then Moses set apart three cities across the Jordan, toward the sunrise, 42 for the killer to flee to, one who kills his neighbor unknowingly without having hated him before, so that he may flee to one of these cities and live: 43 Bezer in the wilderness, in the flat country, for the Reubenites; Ramoth in Gilead for the Gadites; and Golan in Bathnin for the Manassites. 44 And this is the law that Moses set before the children of Israel. 45 These are the testimonies, the statutes and the rulings that Moses spoke to the children of Israel when they came out of Egypt, 46 across the Jordan, in the valley opposite Beth Peor, in the land of Sihon king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, whom Moses and the children of Israel killed when they came out of Egypt. 47 And they inherited his land and the land of Og king of Bathnin, the two kings of the Amorites who were across the Jordan toward the sunrise, 48 from Aroer, which is on the edge of the Arnon valley, as far as the Mountain of Snow, that is, Hermon, 49 and all the plain across the Jordan to the east, as far as the sea of the plain, the Salt Sea, below the slopes of Sekhita.

Chapter 5

1 And Moses called to all Israel and said to them: Hear, Israel, the decrees and the judgments that I am speaking in your hearing today, and learn them, and take care to do them. 2 Shema our God cut a covenant with us at Horeb. 3 It was not with our fathers that Shema cut this covenant, but with us, we who are here today, all of us alive. 4 Face to face Shema spoke with you on the mountain from within the fire, 5 while I was standing between Shema and you at that time to tell you the words of Shema, for you were afraid in the presence of the fire and did not go up on the mountain. He said: 6 I am Shema your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of slaves. 7 You shall have no other gods in my presence. 8 You shall not make yourself a carved image, or any likeness of what is in the heavens above, or of what is on the earth below, or of what is in the waters below the earth. 9 You shall not bow down to them and you shall not serve them, for I, Shema your God, am a jealous God, bringing the guilt of fathers upon sons, upon the third and upon the fourth [generation] of those who hate me, 10 and showing kindness to thousands, to those who love me and to those who keep my commands. 11 You shall not take up the name of Shema your God for nothing, for Shema will not clear anyone who takes up his name for nothing. 12 Keep the Sabbath day to make it holy, as Shema your God commanded you. 13 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 14 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to Shema your God. You shall do no work on it, you or your son or your daughter, your male slave or your female slave, your ox or your donkey or any of your animals, or the stranger who is in your towns, so that your male slave [and] your female slave may rest as you do. 15 And you shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and Shema your God brought you out from there with a strong hand and with an outstretched arm. That is why Shema your God commanded you to keep the Sabbath day. 16 Honor your father and your mother, as Shema your God commanded you, so that your days may be long and so that it may go well with you on the land that Shema your God is giving you. 17 You shall not kill. 18 You shall not commit adultery. 19 You shall not steal. 20 You shall not give empty testimony against your neighbor. 21 You shall not desire your neighbor's house, and you shall not covet your neighbor's wife, his field, his male slave or his female slave, his ox or his donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor. And when Shema your God brings you into the land of the Canaanite, which you are entering to inherit, you shall set up great stones for yourself and coat them with plaster, and write on the stones all the words of this law. And when you cross the Jordan, you shall set up these stones that I am commanding you today on Mount Gerizim, and there you shall build an altar to Shema your God, an altar of stones; you shall not raise iron over them. Of whole stones you shall build the altar of Shema your God, and offer burnt offerings on it to Shema your God, and sacrifice peace offerings, and eat there and rejoice before Shema your God. That mountain is across the Jordan, beyond the road of the sunset, in the land of the Canaanite who lives in the valley, opposite Gilgal, beside the plain of Moreh, opposite Shechem. 22 These words Shema spoke with all your assembly on the mountain from within the fire, the darkness, the cloud and the thick gloom, in a great voice, and it did not cease. And he wrote them on two tablets of stone and gave them to me. 23 And when you heard the voice from within the darkness while the mountain blazed with fire, all the heads of your tribes and your wise men came near to me, 24 and you said: Look, Shema our God has shown us his glory and his greatness, and we have heard his voice from within the fire. Today we have seen that God may speak with a human being and he still lives. 25 So now, why should we die? For this great fire will consume us. If we go on hearing the voice of Shema our God any longer, we will die. 26 For who of all flesh has heard the voice of the living God speaking from within the fire, as we have, and lived? 27 You go near and hear everything that Shema our God says, and you tell us everything that Shema our God speaks with you; we will hear and we will do [it]. 28 And Shema heard the sound of your words when you spoke with me, and Shema said to me: I have heard the sound of the words of this people that they have spoken with you. They have done well in all they have spoken. 29 If only it were granted that they had such a heart as this, to fear me and to keep my commands every day, so that it may go well with them and with their children forever! 30 Go, say to them: Return to your dwellings. 31 But you, stand here with me, and I will speak with you the whole commandment, the decrees and the rulings that you are to teach them, so that they do them in the land that I am giving them to inherit. 32 So take care to do as Shema your God has commanded you; do not turn aside to the right or to the left. 33 In every path that Shema your God has commanded you, you shall walk, so that you may live and it may be well with you, and you may prolong [your] days in the land that you will inherit.

Chapter 6

1 And this is the commandment, the decrees and the rulings that Shema your God commanded to teach you, to do in the land you are entering to inherit, 2 so that you may fear Shema your God, keeping all his decrees and his commands that I am commanding you today, you and your son and your son's son, all the days of your life, and so that your days may be long. 3 And you shall listen, Israel, and take care to do [them], so that it may go well with you and you may multiply greatly, as Shema the God of your fathers promised you: a land flowing with milk and honey. 4 Hear, Israel: Shema our God, Shema is one. 5 And you shall love Shema your God with all your heart, with all your soul and with all your might. 6 And these words that I am commanding you today shall be upon your heart. 7 And you shall repeat them to your children, and speak of them when you sit at home, when you walk on the road, when you lie down and when you rise. 8 And you shall tie them as a sign on your hands, and they shall be frontlets between your eyes. 9 And you shall write them on the doorposts of your houses and on your towns. 10 And when Shema your God brings you into the land that he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob, to give you, great and good cities that you did not build, 11 houses full of every good thing that you did not fill, hewn cisterns that you did not hew, vineyards and olive trees that you did not plant, and you eat and are satisfied, 12 guard yourself so that you do not forget Shema your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of slaves. 13 You shall fear Shema your God, and him you shall serve, and by his name you shall swear. 14 You shall not go after other gods, from the gods of the peoples that surround you, 15 for Shema your God in your midst is a jealous God, so that the anger of Shema your God does not grow strong against you and he wipe you out from the face of the earth. 16 You shall not test Shema your God as you tested [him] at Massah. 17 You shall carefully keep the commands of Shema your God and his testimonies and his decrees that he has commanded you. 18 And you shall do what is upright and good in the sight of Shema your God, so that it may go well with you and you may go in and inherit the good land that Shema swore to your fathers, 19 driving out all your enemies before you, as Shema has said. 20 And when your son asks you tomorrow, saying: What are the testimonies, the decrees and the rulings that Shema our God commanded you? 21 then you shall say to your son: We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt, and Shema brought us out of Egypt with a strong hand, 22 and Shema set great and terrible signs and wonders against Egypt, against Pharaoh and against all his house, before our eyes, 23 and he brought us out from there in order to bring us in, to give us the land that Shema swore to our fathers. 24 And Shema commanded us to do all these decrees, to fear Shema our God, for our good every day, and to keep us alive, as on this day. 25 And it will be merit for us when we take care to do all this commandment before Shema our God, as he commanded us.

Chapter 7

1 When Shema your God brings you into the land that you are entering, there to possess it, and drives out many nations before you, the Hittite, the Girgashite, the Amorite, the Canaanite, the Perizzite, the Hivite and the Jebusite, seven nations more numerous and stronger than you, 2 and Shema your God gives them up before you and you kill them, you shall utterly devote them to destruction. You shall not set up a covenant with them, and you shall not pity them. 3 And you shall not intermarry with them: you shall not give your daughter to his son, and you shall not take his daughter for your son. 4 For he will turn your son aside from following me, and he will serve other gods, and the anger of Shema will grow strong against you, and he will wipe you out quickly. 5 Rather, this is what you shall do to them: you shall overturn their altars, smash their pillars, cut down their shade-trees and burn their carved images in fire. 6 For you are a holy people to Shema your God, and Shema your God chose you to be his treasured people out of all the peoples that are on the face of the earth. 7 It was not because you were more numerous than all the peoples that Shema desired you and chose you, for you were the fewest of all the peoples, 8 but because Shema loves you, and because he keeps the oath that he swore to your fathers, Shema brought you out with a strong hand and redeemed you from the house of slaves, from the hand of Pharaoh king of Egypt. 9 And you shall know that Shema your God is God, the faithful God, who keeps the covenant and the kindness for those who love him and for those who keep his commandments, to a thousand generations, 10 and who pays back to his face the one who hates him, to destroy him. He will not hold back from the one who hates him; to his face he will pay him back. 11 So you shall keep the commandment, the statutes and the judgments that I command you today, to do them. 12 And because you listen to these judgments and keep them and do them, Shema your God will keep for you the covenant and the kindness that he swore to your fathers. 13 And he will love you and bless you and multiply you, and he will bless the fruit of your womb and the fruit of your land, your grain, your new wine and your fresh oil, the young of your cattle and the herds of your sheep, on the land that Shema swore to your fathers to give you. 14 Blessed shall you be above all the peoples. There shall be no barren male or barren female among you or among your cattle. 15 And Shema will remove from you every sickness, and all the evil diseases of the Egyptians that you have known he will not put on you, but he will lay them on all who hate you. 16 And you shall make an end of all the peoples that Shema your God is giving you. Your eye shall not pity them, and you shall not serve their gods, for that is a snare to you. 17 If you say in your heart, "These nations are more numerous than I; how can I drive them out?" 18 do not be afraid of them. Remember well what Shema your God did to Pharaoh and to all the Egyptians: 19 the great trials that your eyes saw, the signs and the wonders, the strong hand and the outstretched arm by which Shema your God brought you out. So Shema your God will do to all the peoples you are afraid of. 20 And Shema your God will also send the hornet among them, until those who are left and those who hide perish from before you. 21 Do not be terrified before them, for Shema your God is in your midst, a great and awesome God. 22 And Shema your God will drive these nations out from before you little by little. You cannot finish them off quickly, or the wild animals will grow too many for you. 23 And Shema your God will give them up before you and throw them into great confusion until he wipes them out. 24 And he will give their kings into your hand, and you shall make their name perish from under the heavens. No one will stand up before you until you have wiped them out. 25 The images of their gods you shall burn in fire. You shall not covet the silver and gold from them and take it for yourself, lest you be snared by it, for it is an abomination to Shema your God. 26 And you shall not bring an abomination into your house and become a thing devoted to destruction like it. You shall utterly loathe it and keep it far, far away, for it is a thing devoted to destruction.

Chapter 8

1 Every commandment that I command you today you shall keep and do, so that you may live and multiply, and go in and possess the land that Shema swore to your fathers. 2 And you shall remember all the way along which Shema your God has brought you these forty years in the wilderness, in order to humble you, to test you, to know what is in your heart, whether you would keep his commandments or not. 3 And he afflicted you and let you go hungry and fed you the manna, which you did not know and your fathers did not know, in order to make you know that it is not on bread alone that a person lives. 4 Your clothing did not wear out on you, and your feet did not swell these forty years. 5 And know in your heart that just as a man disciplines his son, Shema your God disciplines you. 6 And keep the command of Shema your God, to walk in his ways and to fear him. 7 For Shema your God is bringing you into a good and wide land, a land of streams of water, springs and deeps flowing out in the valley and on the mountain, 8 a land of wheat and barley, vine, fig and pomegranate, a land of oil olives and honey, 9 a land where you will eat bread without poverty, where you will lack nothing, a land whose stones are iron and from whose mountains you will dig copper. 10 And you will eat and be satisfied, and you will bless Shema your God in the good land that he has given you. 11 Watch yourself so that you do not forget Shema your God by not keeping his commandments, his judgments and his statutes, which I command you today, 12 lest you eat and be satisfied, and build good houses and live [in them], 13 and your oxen and your sheep multiply, and silver and gold multiply for you, and all that you have multiplies, 14 and your heart is lifted up and you forget Shema your God, the one who brought you out of the land of Egypt, from the house of slaves, 15 who led you through the great and fearsome wilderness, [with its] burning serpent and scorpion and thirsty ground where there is no water, who brought water out for you from the flint rock, 16 who fed you manna in the wilderness, which your fathers did not know, in order to humble you and in order to test you, to do you good in your latter end, 17 and you say in your heart, "My strength and the might of my hand have made me this wealth." 18 But remember Shema your God, for he is the one who gives you strength to make wealth, in order to establish his covenant that he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob, as it is this day. 19 And if you do forget Shema your God and go after other gods and serve them and bow down to them, I testify against you today that you will surely perish. 20 Like the nations that Shema destroys before you, so you will perish, because you would not listen to the voice of Shema your God.

Chapter 9

1 Hear, Israel: today you are crossing the Jordan, to go in and dispossess nations greater and stronger than you, great cities walled up to the heights, 2 a people great and tall, the sons of the Anakim, whom you know and of whom you have heard, "Who can stand up before the sons of Anak?" 3 Know today that Shema your God is the one who crosses over before you, a consuming fire. He will wipe them out, and he will subdue them before you, and you will drive them out and destroy them quickly, as Shema has spoken to you. 4 Do not say in your heart, when Shema your God thrusts them out before you, "Because of my merit Shema has brought me in to possess this land," when it is because of the guilt of these nations that Shema is driving them out before you. 5 It is not because of your merit or the uprightness of your heart that you are going in to possess their land, but because of the guilt of these nations Shema is driving them out before you, and in order to establish the word that he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob. 6 Know, then, that it is not because of your merit that Shema your God is giving you this good land to possess, for you are a hard-necked people. 7 Remember, and do not forget, how you provoked Shema your God in the wilderness. From the day you came out of the land of Egypt until you came to this place, you have been rebelling against Shema. 8 And at Horeb you provoked Shema, and Shema was angry with you, to wipe you out. 9 When I went up the mountain to receive the stone tablets, the tablets of the covenant that Shema cut with you, I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights. I ate no bread and drank no water. 10 And Shema gave me the two stone tablets written by the finger of God, and on them were all the words that Shema spoke with you on the mountain from the midst of the fire on the day of the assembly. 11 And when forty days and forty nights had ended, Shema gave me the two tablets of the covenant. 12 And Shema said to me, "Get up, go down quickly from here, for your people whom you brought out of Egypt have acted corruptly. They have quickly turned aside from the road that I commanded them; they have made themselves a cast calf." 13 And Shema spoke to me, saying, "I have seen this people, and look, it is a hard-necked people. 14 Leave me alone, and I will wipe them out and erase their name from under the heavens, and I will make you into a nation stronger and more numerous than it." 15 And I turned and went down from the mountain while it was burning with fire, and the two tablets of the covenant were on my two hands. 16 And I looked, and there you had sinned against Shema your God. You had made yourselves a cast calf; you had quickly turned aside from the path that Shema had commanded you. 17 And I seized the two tablets and threw them from my two hands and smashed them before your eyes. 18 And I fell down before Shema as at the first, forty days and forty nights. I ate no bread and drank no water, because of all your sins that you committed by doing what is evil in the sight of Shema, to provoke him. 19 For I was afraid of the anger and the fury with which Shema was angry at you, to wipe you out. And Shema listened to me that time too. 20 And Shema was very angry with Aaron, to wipe him out, and I prayed for Aaron too at that time. 21 And your sin that you had made, the calf, I took and burned in fire, and I crushed it, grinding it thoroughly until it was fine as dust, and I threw its dust into the stream that came down from the mountain. 22 And at Taberah and at Massah and at Qibre-tahmadta you kept provoking Shema. 23 And when Shema sent you from Kadesh-barnea, saying, "Go up and possess the land that I have given you," you rebelled against the word of Shema your God, and you did not trust him and did not listen to his voice. 24 You have been rebelling against Shema from the day he came to know you. 25 And I fell down before Shema the forty days and the forty nights that I lay fallen, because Shema had said he would wipe you out. 26 And I prayed to Shema and said, "My Lord Shema, do not destroy your people and your portion, whom you redeemed by your greatness, whom you brought out of Egypt with your strong hand. 27 Remember your servants, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob. Do not look at the hardness of this people, or at their wickedness, or at their sin, 28 lest the people of the land from which you brought us out say, 'Because Shema was not able to bring them into the land that he promised them, and because he hated them, he brought them out to kill them in the wilderness.' 29 And they are your people and your portion, whom you brought out of Egypt by your great strength and by your outstretched arm."

Chapter 10

1 At that time Shema said to me, "Carve yourself two stone tablets like the first ones, and come up to me on the mountain, and make yourself an ark of wood. 2 And on the tablets you will write the words that were on the first tablets, the ones you broke, and you will put them in the ark." 3 So I made an ark of acacia wood, and carved two stone tablets like the first ones, and went up the mountain with the two tablets in my hand. 4 And he wrote on the tablets, as in the first writing, the ten words that Shema spoke with you on the mountain from within the fire on the day of the assembly, and Shema gave them to me. 5 And I turned and came down from the mountain, and put the tablets in the ark that I had made, and there they are, as Shema commanded me. 6 And the children of Israel set out from Yakrot and camped at Bene-jaakan. 7 From there they set out and camped at Hagdagrah. From there they set out and camped at Jotbathah, a land of streams of water. From there they set out and camped at Abronah. From there they set out and camped at Ezion-geber. From there they set out and camped in the wilderness of Zin, that is, Kadesh. From there they set out and camped at Mount Tura. And Aaron died there and was buried there, and Eleazar his son served as priest in his place. 8 At that time Shema set apart the tribe of Levi to carry the ark of the covenant of Shema, to stand before Shema to serve him and to bless in his name, to this day. 9 That is why Levi has no share or portion with his brothers; Shema is his portion, as Shema your God told him. 10 And I stood on the mountain as in the first days, forty days and forty nights, and Shema listened to me at that time too, and Shema was not willing to destroy you. 11 And Shema said to me, "Get up, go on the journey ahead of this people, so they may go in and take possession of the land that I swore to their fathers to give them." 12 And now, Israel, what does Shema your God ask of you, except to fear Shema your God, to walk in his paths, to love him, and with all your heart and all your soul to serve Shema your God, 13 to keep the commands of Shema your God and his ordinances, which I command you today for your good? 14 See, to Shema your God belong the heavens and the heavens of the heavens, the earth and everything in it. 15 Only in your fathers did Shema delight, to love them, and he chose their descendants after them, you, out of all the peoples, as it is today. 16 So circumcise the foreskin of your hearts, and do not stiffen your necks any longer. 17 For Shema your God is the God of gods and the Lord of lords, the great, mighty and awesome God, who shows no favoritism and takes no money. 18 He does justice for the orphan and the widow, and loves the stranger, giving him bread and clothing. 19 So love the stranger, for you were strangers in the land of Egypt. 20 You shall fear Shema your God, and him you shall serve, and to him you shall draw near, and by his name you shall swear. 21 He is your praise, and he is your God, who did for you these great and awesome things that your eyes have seen. 22 Your fathers went down to Egypt seventy persons, and now Shema your God has made you as many as the stars of the heavens.

Chapter 11

1 So love Shema your God, and keep his charge, his statutes, his commands and his judgments, all the days. 2 And know today, for [I am] not [speaking with] your children, who have not known and have not seen the discipline of Shema your God, his greatness, his strong hand and his outstretched arm, 3 his signs and his works, which he did among the Egyptians, to Pharaoh and to all his land, 4 and what he did to the army of the Egyptians, to its horses and its chariots, how he made the waters of the Sea of Suf flow over their faces as they pursued you, and Shema destroyed them to this day, 5 and what he did for you in the wilderness until you came to this place, 6 and what he did to Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab son of Reuben, how the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them, and all the men who belonged to Korah, and their households and their tents, and every living thing that went with them, in the midst of all Israel. For your eyes have seen every living thing that went with them in the midst of all Israel. 7 For your eyes have seen all the great work of Shema that he did. 8 So keep the whole commandment that I command you today, so that you may be strong, and go in and take possession of the land that you are entering to possess, 9 and so that you may live long on the land that Shema swore to your fathers to give to their descendants, a land flowing with milk and honey. 10 For the land that you are entering to possess is not like the land of Egypt that you came out of, where you sowed your seed and watered [it] with your foot like a vegetable garden. 11 The land you are crossing into to possess is a land of hills and valleys; it drinks water from the rain of the heavens, 12 a land that Shema your God cares for always; the watchful eye of Shema your God is on it from the beginning of the year to the end of the year. 13 And if you truly listen to my commands that I command you today, to love Shema your God and to serve him with all your heart and with all your soul, 14 he will give the rain of your land in its season, early and late, and you will gather in your crops and your fresh produce. 15 And he will give grass in your field for your cattle, and you will eat and be satisfied. 16 Be on your guard, so that your heart does not grow careless and you turn aside and serve other gods and bow down to them, 17 and the anger of Shema burns against you, and he shuts up the heavens so that there is no rain and the land does not yield its produce, and you quickly perish from the good land that Shema is giving you. 18 So set these words of mine on your heart and on your soul, and tie them as a sign on your hands, and they shall be bands between your eyes. 19 And teach them to your children, speaking of them when you sit in the house, when you walk on the road, when you lie down and when you get up. 20 And write them on the doorposts of your houses and on your gates, 21 so that your days and the days of your children may be many on the land that Shema swore to your fathers to give them, like the days of the heavens over the earth. 22 For if you carefully keep this whole commandment that I command you today, to do it, to love Shema your God, to walk in all his paths and to draw near to him, 23 then Shema will drive out all these nations before you, and you will dispossess nations greater and stronger than you. 24 Every place the sole of your foot treads on will be yours: from the wilderness and Lebanon, and from the river, the river Euphrates, to the western sea will be your border. 25 No one will stand up against you. Shema your God will put the terror and the fear of you on all the land you tread on, as he told you. 26 See, I am setting before you today a blessing and a curse: 27 the blessing, if you listen to the commands of Shema your God that I command you today, 28 and the curse, if you do not listen to the commands of Shema your God, and turn aside from the path that I command you today, to go after other gods that you have not known. 29 And when Shema your God brings you into the land you are entering to possess, you shall put the blessing on Mount Gerizim and the curse on Mount Ebal. 30 Are they not across the Jordan, beyond the road where the sun sets, in the land of the Canaanites who live in the valley, opposite Gilgal, beside the plain of Moreh, opposite Shechem? 31 For you are crossing the Jordan to go in and possess the land that Shema your God is giving you, and you will possess it and live in it. 32 And be careful to do all the statutes and all the judgments that I am setting before you today.

Chapter 12

1 These are the decrees and the judgments that you shall keep and do in the land that Shema, the God of your fathers, has given you to inherit, all the days that you live on the land. 2 You shall utterly destroy all the places where the nations you are dispossessing served their gods: on the high mountains, on the hills, and under every lush tree. 3 You shall tear down their altars and smash their pillars, burn their groves with fire, cut down the carved images of their gods, and wipe out their name from that place. 4 You shall not act this way toward Shema your God. 5 But only the place that Shema your God has chosen out of all your tribes to settle his name there, his dwelling, shall you seek out, and there you shall come. 6 There you shall bring your burnt offerings and your sacrifices, your tithes and your contributions, your vows and your freewill offerings, and the firstborn of your cattle and your flocks. 7 There you shall eat before Shema your God, and you shall rejoice in every undertaking of your hands, you and your households, in which Shema your God has blessed you. 8 You shall no longer act as we are acting here today, each person doing whatever is proper in his own sight, 9 for you have not yet come to the resting place and to the portion that Shema your God is giving you. 10 You will cross the Jordan and live in the land that Shema your God is giving you to possess, and he will give you rest from all your enemies around you, and you will live in security. 11 Then the place that Shema your God has chosen to settle his name in: there you shall bring everything I command you, your burnt offerings and your sacrifices, your tithes and your contributions, your freewill offerings, and all the choicest of the vows you vow to Shema. 12 You shall rejoice before Shema your God, you, your sons and your daughters, your male and female servants, and the Levite who is in your cities, for he has no share or inheritance with you. 13 Be careful not to offer up your burnt offering in any place you happen to see, 14 but only in the place that Shema has chosen in one of your tribes. There you shall offer up your burnt offerings, and there you shall do everything I command you. 15 Even so, whenever your soul desires, you may slaughter and eat meat in all your cities, according to the blessing that Shema your God has given you. The unclean and the clean may eat it, as [they eat] the gazelle and the deer. 16 Only the blood you shall not eat; you shall pour it out on the ground like water. 17 You are not permitted to eat in your cities the tithe of your grain, of your dry produce or your moist produce, or the firstborn of your cattle and your flock, or any of the vows you make, or your freewill offerings, or the contribution of your hands. 18 Instead you shall eat it before Shema your God in the place that Shema your God has chosen, you, your son and your daughter, your male and female servants, and the Levite who is in your cities, and you shall rejoice before Shema your God in every undertaking of your hands. 19 Be careful not to abandon the Levite all your days on your land. 20 When Shema your God widens your territory as he told you, and you say, "I will eat meat," because your soul longs to eat meat, you may eat meat as much as your soul desires. 21 If the place that Shema your God has chosen to settle his name there is far from you, you may slaughter from your cattle and from your flock that Shema has given you, as I have commanded you, and eat in your cities as much as your soul desires. 22 But just as the gazelle and the deer are eaten, so you shall eat it; the unclean among you and the clean alike may eat it. 23 Only be firm not to eat the blood, for the blood is the life, and you shall not eat the life together with the meat. 24 You shall not eat it; you shall pour it out on the ground like water. 25 You shall not eat it, so that things may go well for you and for your children after you, when you do what is proper in the sight of Shema. 26 Only your holy things that you have, and your vows, you shall carry and bring to the place that Shema has chosen. 27 You shall offer your burnt offerings, the meat and the blood, on the altar of Shema your God. The blood of your sacrifices shall be poured out on the altar of Shema your God, and the meat you shall eat. 28 Keep, listen to, and do all these words that I command you today, so that things may go well for you and for your children after you forever, when you do what is proper and good in the sight of Shema your God. 29 When Shema your God uproots from before you the nations you are going in to dispossess, and you dispossess them and live in their land, 30 be careful that you are not led astray after them once they have been destroyed from before you, and that you do not go looking for their gods, saying, "How did these nations serve their gods? I will do the same too." 31 You shall not act this way toward Shema your God, for every abomination of Shema, which he hates, they have done for their gods; they even burn their sons and their daughters in fire to their gods.

Chapter 13

1 Every word that I command you today, keep it and do it. Do not add to it, and do not take away from it. 2 If a prophet or someone who dreams a dream rises up among you and gives you a sign or a wonder, 3 and the sign and the wonder he told you about comes to pass, and he says, "Let us go after other gods that you have not known, and let us serve them," 4 you shall not heed the words of that prophet or of that dreamer who dreamed, for Shema your God is putting you to the test, to know whether with all your heart and with all your soul you love Shema your God. 5 After Shema your God you shall walk; him you shall fear; his commandments you shall keep; to his voice you shall listen; him you shall serve; and to him you shall draw near. 6 That prophet, or that dreamer who dreamed, shall be put to death, for he has spoken rebellion against Shema your God, the one who brought you out of the land of Egypt, redeeming you from the house of slaves, to lead you astray from the way in which Shema your God commanded you to walk. So you shall remove the evil from among you. 7 If your brother, your father's son or your mother's son, or your son or your daughter, or the wife of your bosom, or your friend who is like your own soul, persuades you in secret, saying, "Let us go and serve other gods," which neither you nor your fathers have known, 8 from the gods of the peoples who surround you, whether near you or far from you, from one edge of the earth to the other edge of the earth, 9 you shall not consent to him, you shall not listen to him, your eye shall not spare him, you shall not have mercy, and you shall not cover up for him. 10 Instead you must kill him. Your hand shall be against him first to kill him, and afterward the hand of all the people. 11 You shall stone him with stones, and he shall be killed, for he sought to lead you astray from Shema your God, who brought you out of the house of slaves in the land of Egypt. 12 Then all Israel will hear and be afraid, and they will no longer do such an evil thing as this among you. 13 If you hear in one of your cities that Shema your God gives you to live in, it being said, 14 "Worthless men have gone out from among you and led astray the inhabitants of their city, saying, 'Let us go and serve other gods that you have not known,'" 15 then you shall seek and search and ask thoroughly. And if it is true and the matter is certain, that this abomination has been done among you, 16 you must kill the inhabitants of that city by the edge of the sword, and devote it to destruction, and all that is in it and its cattle, by the edge of the sword. 17 You shall gather all its plunder into the middle of its square, and burn with fire the city and all its plunder as a whole offering to Shema your God, and it shall be [so] forever; it shall never be built again. 18 Nothing of what is devoted to destruction shall cling to your hand, so that Shema may turn back from the force of his anger and give you mercy and have compassion on you and multiply you, as he swore to your fathers, 19 when you listen to the voice of Shema your God, to keep all his commandments that I command you today, to do what is proper and good in the sight of Shema your God.

Chapter 14

1 You are sons to Shema your God. You shall not gash yourselves or put a bald patch between your eyes for the dead. 2 For you are a holy people to Shema your God, and Shema your God chose you to be a treasured people for himself out of all the peoples on the face of the earth. 3 You shall not eat any abomination. 4 These are the animals that you may eat: the ox, the young of the sheep, and the young of the goats, 5 the deer, the gazelle, the roebuck, the ashmal, the dait, the rahim, and the yar. 6 Any animal that has a split hoof, its hoof divided into two parts, and brings up the cud, among the animals: that you may eat. 7 But these you shall not eat, of those that bring up the cud and of those that split the hoof: the camel, the hare, and the mafsa, for they bring up the cud but their hoof is not split; they are unclean to you. 8 And the pig, for it has a parted hoof and a divided, split hoof but does not chew the cud, is unclean to you. You shall not eat of their meat, and you shall not touch their carcasses. 9 Of these that are in the water you may eat: whatever has fins and scales you may eat. 10 But whatever does not have fins and scales you shall not eat; it is unclean to you. 11 Every clean bird you may eat. 12 These are the ones you shall not eat: the eagle, the falcon, and the hawha, 13 the kite, and the haita after its kind, 14 every raven after its kind, 15 the ostrich, the tahusa, the shaafa after its kind, and the hawk, 16 the tsadya, the iba, the barbari, the qafufa, 17 the qatin, and the naamita, 18 the kenunita, and the atafita after its kind, the naqarta, and the bat. 19 Every swarming thing among the birds is unclean to you; you shall not eat of them. 20 Every clean bird you may eat. 21 You shall not strip the skin off any carcass. You may give it to the resident foreigner who is in your cities, and he may strip it or sell it to a foreigner. For you are a people holy to Shema your God. You shall not cook a young goat in its mother's milk. 22 You shall tithe all the produce of your seed that comes out of the field, year by year. 23 You shall eat it before Shema your God in the place that Shema your God has chosen to settle his name there: the tithe of your grain, your dry produce and your moist produce, and the firstborn of your cattle and your flock, so that you may learn to fear Shema your God all the days. 24 If the road is too long for you, so that you cannot carry it, if the place that Shema your God has chosen to settle his name there is far from you, for Shema your God will bless you, 25 then you shall exchange it for silver, wrap up the silver in your hand, and go to the place that Shema your God has chosen. 26 You shall spend the silver on whatever your soul longs for, on cattle or on sheep, on wine or on strong drink, or on whatever your soul asks of you, and you shall eat there before Shema your God and rejoice, you and your household. 27 And the Levite who is in your cities, you shall not abandon him, for he has no share or inheritance with you. 28 At the end of three years you shall bring out all the tithe of your produce in that year and set it down in your cities. 29 Then the Levite, for he has no share or inheritance with you, and the resident foreigner, the orphan, and the widow who are in your cities shall be [there], and they shall eat and be satisfied, so that Shema your God may bless you in all the work of your hands that you do.

Chapter 15

1 At the close of seven years you shall make a release. 2 And this is the matter of the release: every lender shall release the loan of his hand that he would collect from his fellow. He shall not press his fellow, his brother, for a release to Shema has been proclaimed. 3 From the foreigner you may collect, but whatever of yours is with your kinsman your hand shall release. 4 Except that there shall be no poor man among you, for in the land which Shema your God gives you as a portion to inherit it, Shema your God will surely bless you, 5 only if you truly listen to the voice of Shema your God, to keep [and] to do all this commandment which I command you today. 6 For Shema your God has blessed you as he spoke to you: you shall lend to many nations and not borrow, and you shall rule over many nations and they shall not rule over you. 7 If there is a poor man among you, one of your brothers, in one of your towns in the land which Shema your God gives you, you shall not harden your heart, nor close your hand against your poor brother. 8 But you shall surely open your hand to him and surely lend him enough for the want that he lacks. 9 Guard yourself, lest a worthless thought speak in your heart, saying, "The seventh year, the year of release, is near," and your eye turn evil toward your poor brother and you give him nothing, and he cry out against you to Shema, and there be sin in you. 10 You shall surely give to him, and your heart shall not be grieved when you give to him, for because of this thing Shema your God will bless you in all your works and in every undertaking of your hands. 11 For the poor man will not cease from within the land; therefore I command you, saying, "You shall surely open your hand to your kinsman, to your needy and to your poor in your land." 12 If your brother is sold to you, whether a Hebrew man or a Hebrew woman, and serves you for six years, then in the seventh year you shall send him away from you free. 13 And when you send him away to freedom from you, you shall not send him away empty. 14 You shall surely load him up from your flock and from your threshing floor and from your winepress; as Shema your God has blessed you, you shall give to him. 15 You shall remember that it was in the land of Egypt that you were a slave, and that Shema your God redeemed you; for that reason I give you this command today. 16 And if he tells you,"I will not go out from you," since he loves you and your household, because it is good for him with you, 17 then you shall take the awl and put it into his ear and into the door, and he shall be your slave forever. And to your female slave also you shall do the same. 18 And it shall not be hard in your eyes when you send him away free from you, for he has served you six years at double the wage of a hired man; and Shema your God will bless you in all that you do. 19 Every firstborn male that is born among your cattle and among your flock you shall sanctify to Shema your God. You shall not work with the firstborn of your ox, nor shear the firstborn of your flock. 20 Before Shema your God you shall eat it year by year in the place which Shema has chosen, you and your household. 21 And if there is a blemish in it, lame or blind or any bad blemish, you shall not sacrifice it to Shema your God. 22 In your towns you shall eat it, the unclean and the clean alike, like the gazelle and like the deer. 23 Only you shall not eat its blood; you shall pour it out on the ground like water.

Chapter 16

1 Keep the month of Abib and make the Passover to Shema your God, for it was in the month of Abib, by night, that Shema your God brought you out of Egypt. 2 And you shall sacrifice the Passover to Shema your God, from sheep and cattle, in the place which Shema your God has chosen to make his name dwell there. 3 You shall not eat leaven with it. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread with it, the bread of distress, for you went out from the land of Egypt by night, so that you may remember the day of your going out from the land of Egypt all the days of your life. 4 And no leaven shall be seen with you in all your border for seven days, and none of the meat which you sacrifice in the evening on the first day shall remain overnight until morning. 5 You are not permitted to sacrifice the Passover in one of your towns which Shema your God gives you, 6 but only in the place which Shema your God has chosen to make his name dwell there; there you shall sacrifice the Passover in the evening, at the setting of the sun, the time of your going out from Egypt. 7 And you shall cook and eat [it] in the place which Shema your God has chosen, and in the morning you shall turn and go to your dwellings. 8 Six days you shall eat unleavened bread, and on the seventh day [there is] a feast to Shema your God; you shall not do any work of labor. 9 Seven weeks you shall count for yourself; from your first putting of the sickle to the standing grain you shall begin to count seven weeks. 10 And you shall make the Feast of Weeks to Shema your God, by the measure of the freewill offering of your hands which you give, as Shema your God has blessed you. 11 And you shall rejoice before Shema your God, you and your son and your daughter, your male slave and your female slave, and the Levite who is in your towns, and the sojourner and the orphan and the widow who are among you, in the place which Shema your God has chosen to make his name dwell there. 12 And you shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt, and you shall keep and do these decrees. 13 The Feast of Booths you shall make for yourself seven days, when you gather in from your threshing floor and from your winepress. 14 And you shall rejoice in your feast, you and your son and your daughter, your male slave and your female slave, and the Levite and the sojourner and the orphan and the widow who are in your towns. 15 Seven days you shall keep the feast to Shema your God in the place which Shema your God has chosen, for Shema your God will bless you in all your produce and in all the work of your hands, and you shall be nothing but joyful. 16 Three times in the year all your males shall appear before Shema your God in the place which he has chosen: at the Feast of Unleavened Bread, at the Feast of Weeks and at the Feast of Booths; and they shall not appear before Shema empty. 17 Each [shall give] according to the gift of his hand, according to the blessing of Shema your God which he has given you. 18 Judges and scribes you shall appoint for yourself in all your towns which Shema your God gives you, by your tribes, and they shall judge the people with true judgment. 19 You shall not bend judgment, and you shall not recognize faces, and you shall not take money, for money diverts the eyes of the wise and unsettles the words of the upright. 20 Truth, truth you shall pursue, so that you may live and inherit the land which Shema your God gives you. 21 You shall not plant for yourself a shade-grove of any tree beside the altar of Shema your God which you make for yourself. 22 And you shall not set up for yourself a standing stone, which Shema your God hates.

Chapter 17

1 You shall not sacrifice to Shema your God an ox or a lamb that has a blemish, anything bad, for it is an abomination to Shema your God. 2 If there is found among you, in one of your towns which Shema your God gives you, a man or a woman who does what is evil in the sight of Shema your God, transgressing his covenant, 3 and goes and serves other gods and bows down to them, or to the sun or to the moon or to any of the host of heaven, which I have not commanded, 4 and they tell you, and you hear and inquire thoroughly, and it proves true, the thing is established: this abomination has been done in Israel, 5 then you shall bring that man or that woman who did this evil thing out into your towns, the man or the woman, and you shall stone them with stones, and they shall be killed. 6 On the word of two witnesses or on the word of three witnesses the one to be killed shall be killed; he shall not be killed on the word of one witness. 7 The hand of the witnesses shall be on him first to kill him, and the hand of all the people afterward; and you shall remove the evil from among you. 8 If a matter of judgment is too wondrous for you, between blood and blood, between case and case, and between injury and injury, matters of dispute in your towns, you shall rise and go up to the place which Shema your God has chosen, 9 and you shall come to the Levite priests and to the judge who will be in those days, and they shall inquire and tell you the matter of the judgment. 10 And you shall act according to the word of the matter that they tell you from that place which Shema your God has chosen, and you shall take care to do according to all that they teach you. 11 According to the word of the instruction that they teach you, and according to the judgment that they say to you, you shall act; you shall not turn aside from the matter that they tell you, right or left. 12 And the man who acts in arrogance, not listening to the priest who stands there to serve Shema your God, or to the judge, that man shall be killed; and you shall remove the evil from Israel. 13 And all the people shall hear and be afraid, and they shall no longer act arrogantly. 14 When you enter the land which Shema your God gives you, and inherit it and settle in it, and say, "I will set a king over me like all the nations around me," 15 you shall surely set over you a king whom Shema your God chooses; from among your brothers you shall set a king over you. You are not permitted to put over you a foreign man who is not your kinsman. 16 Only he shall not gather many horses for himself, and he shall not bring the people back to Egypt in order to gather many horses, for Shema has said to you, "You shall not go back on this road again." 17 And he shall not gather many wives for himself, so that his heart does not turn aside; and silver and gold he shall not gather for himself in great amount. 18 And when he sits on the throne of his kingdom, he shall write for himself a repetition of this law in a book, from before the Levite priests. 19 And it shall be with him, and all the days of his life he shall read in it, so that he learns to fear Shema his God and to keep all the words of this law and these decrees, to do them, 20 so that his heart is not raised above his brothers, and so that he does not turn from the commandment, right or left, so that [his] days may be long on the throne of his kingdom, he and his sons, in the midst of Israel.

Chapter 18

1 The priests, the Levites, the whole tribe of Levi, shall have no portion or inheritance with Israel; they shall eat the offerings of Shema and his inheritance. 2 They shall have no inheritance among their brothers; Shema is their inheritance, as he told them. 3 This shall be what the priests are due from the people, from those who slaughter a sacrifice, whether ox or sheep: one shall give the priest the shoulder, the two jaws and the stomach. 4 The first of your grain, of your dry and your fresh produce, and the first shearing of your flock you shall give him. 5 For Shema your God has chosen him and his sons from all your tribes for all time, to stand in the presence of Shema your God, serving him and blessing in his name. 6 If a Levite comes from one of your towns anywhere in Israel where he is living as a stranger, and comes with all his heart's desire to the place Shema has chosen, 7 he shall serve in the name of Shema his God like all his fellow Levites who stand there before Shema. 8 He shall eat a share equal to theirs, apart from what he gets by selling his family's property. 9 When you enter the land that Shema your God is giving you, do not learn to copy the abominations of those nations. 10 There must not be found among you anyone who passes his son or his daughter through the fire, anyone who practices divination, a sorcerer, an omen-reader or a witch, 11 one who binds spells, one who consults a ghost or a familiar spirit, or one who seeks out the dead. 12 For everyone who does these things is an abomination to Shema your God, and because of these abominations Shema your God is driving them out before you. 13 You shall be wholehearted with Shema your God. 14 For these nations that you are dispossessing turn to sorcerers and listen to diviners; but Shema your God has not granted you to do so. 15 Shema your God will raise up for you a prophet like me from among your brothers; you shall listen to him. 16 This is just what you asked of Shema your God at Horeb on the day of the assembly, when you said, "Let me not hear the voice of Shema my God again, and let me not see this great fire anymore, so that I do not die." 17 And Shema said to me, "What they have said is good. 18 I will raise up for them a prophet like you from among their brothers, and I will put my words in his mouth, and he will tell them everything I command him. 19 Whoever does not listen to my words that he speaks in my name, I myself will call him to account. 20 But the prophet who dares to speak a word in my name that I did not command him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that prophet shall be put to death." 21 And if you say to yourself, "How shall I recognize a word that Shema has not spoken?" 22 [when] a prophet speaks in the name of Shema and the word does not happen and does not come about, that is a word Shema has not spoken. The prophet spoke it out of arrogance; do not be afraid of him.

Chapter 19

1 When Shema your God uproots the nations whose land Shema your God is giving you, and you dispossess them and settle in their towns and in their houses, 2 you shall set apart for yourself three cities in the middle of your land that Shema your God is giving you to possess. 3 Prepare the road for yourself, and divide into three parts the territory of your land that Shema your God gives you as an inheritance, so that any killer can flee there. 4 This is the rule for the killer who flees there and stays alive: one who kills his neighbor without knowing it and had not hated him beforehand. 5 Suppose someone goes into the forest with his neighbor to cut wood, and his hand swings out with the axe to cut down the tree, and the iron slips off the handle and strikes his neighbor, and he dies; that man shall flee to one of these cities and stay alive. 6 Otherwise the avenger of blood may chase the killer while his anger is hot, overtake him because the road is long, and strike him dead, though no death sentence applies to him, since he had not hated him beforehand. 7 That is why I am commanding you: set apart for yourself three cities. 8 And if Shema your God enlarges your territory, as he swore to your fathers, and gives you all the land he promised to give to your fathers, 9 when you keep this whole commandment and do it, as I command you today, to love Shema your God and to walk in his ways always, then you shall add three more cities for yourself beside these three, 10 so that innocent blood is not shed in the middle of your land that Shema your God is giving you as a portion, and bloodguilt does not fall on you. 11 But if a man hates his neighbor and picks a quarrel with him, rises against him and strikes him dead, and then flees to one of these cities, 12 the elders of his city shall send and take him from there and hand him over to the avenger of blood, and he shall be put to death. 13 Do not look on him with pity; remove the guilt of innocent blood from Israel, and it will go well with you. 14 Do not move your neighbor's boundary marker, which the people of old set up, in the inheritance you will receive in the land that Shema your God is giving you to possess. 15 A single witness shall not stand against a man for any wrong or any sin, whatever sin he commits; a case shall be established on the word of two witnesses or on the word of three witnesses. 16 If a false witness rises against a man to accuse him of going astray, 17 the two men who have the dispute shall stand before Shema, before the priests and the judges who are in office in those days. 18 The judges shall investigate thoroughly, and if the witness is a false witness who has made a false charge against his brother, 19 you shall do to him what he plotted to do to his brother, and remove the evil from among you. 20 Those who remain will hear and be afraid, and will never again do such an evil thing among you. 21 Do not look on him with pity: life for life, eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot.

Chapter 20

1 When you go out to battle against your enemies and see horses and chariots and a people more numerous than you, do not be afraid of them, for Shema your God, who brought you up from the land of Egypt, is with you. 2 When you draw near to the battle, the priest shall come forward and speak to the people. 3 He shall say to them, "Hear, Israel: today you are drawing near to battle against your enemies. Do not let your hearts grow faint; do not be afraid, do not be distressed and do not panic before them, 4 for Shema your God is the one who goes with you, to fight for you against your enemies and to save you." 5 Then the scribes shall speak to the people, saying, "Has anyone built a new house and not dedicated it? Let him go back to his house, or he may die in the battle and another man dedicate it. 6 Has anyone planted a vineyard and not begun to use its fruit? Let him go back to his house, or he may die in the battle and another man use it. 7 Has anyone become engaged to a woman and not married her? Let him go back to his house, or he may die in the battle and another man marry her." 8 The scribes shall speak further to the people and say, "Is anyone afraid and fainthearted? Let him go back to his house, so that he does not bring down his brothers' hearts as his own has sunk." 9 When the scribes have finished speaking to the people, they shall appoint army commanders at the head of the people. 10 When you approach a city to fight against it, call out to it with an offer of peace. 11 If it answers you with peace and opens [its gates] to you, then all the people found in it shall become your tenant laborers and serve you. 12 But if it does not make peace with you and goes to war against you, you shall besiege it. 13 Shema your God will give it into your hand, and you shall kill all its males with the edge of the sword. 14 Only the women, the little children, the livestock and everything in the city, all its plunder, you may take for yourself, and you shall eat the plunder of your enemies that Shema your God has given you. 15 That is how you shall treat all the cities that are very far from you, which are not among the cities of these nations. 16 But in the cities of these peoples that Shema your God is giving you as a portion, you shall not leave alive anything that breathes. 17 For you shall utterly destroy them, the Canaanite, the Amorite, the Hivite and the Jebusite, as Shema your God commanded you, 18 so that they do not teach you to do all the abominations they have done for their gods, and you act abominably toward Shema your God. 19 When you besiege a city for many days, fighting against it to break it open, do not destroy its trees by swinging an axe against them; for you may eat from them, and you shall not uproot them. Is the tree of the field a man, to come against you under siege? 20 Only a tree that you know is not a food tree you may destroy and cut down, and build a siege ramp against the city that is waging war with you, until it falls.

Chapter 21

1 If a slain [man] is found in the land that Shema your God is giving you to inherit, fallen in the open country, [and] it is not known who killed him, 2 your elders and your scribes shall go out and measure toward the cities that surround the slain [man]. 3 And the city that is nearest to the slain [man]: the elders of that city shall take a heifer from the cattle that has never been put to work and has never been led in harness by an owner. 4 The elders of that city shall bring the heifer down into a valley that is not worked and not sown, and there in the valley they shall break the heifer's neck. 5 Then the priests, the sons of Levi, shall come forward, for Shema your God chose them to serve and to bless in the name of Shema, and by their word every dispute and every injury shall be [decided]. 6 And all the elders of that city who are near the slain [man] shall wash their hands over the heifer whose neck was broken in the valley, 7 and they shall answer and say, "Our hands did not shed this blood, and our eyes did not see [it]. 8 Forgive your people Israel, whom you redeemed, Shema, and do not lay innocent blood among your people Israel." And the blood shall be forgiven them. 9 So you shall remove the innocent blood from your midst, when you do what is right in the sight of Shema. 10 When you go out to battle against your enemies, and Shema your God gives them into your hand, and you take captives from them, 11 and among the captives you see a lovely, beautiful woman, and you desire her and take her for yourself as a wife, 12 you shall bring her into your house, and she shall cut the hair of her head and trim her nails. 13 She shall take off the clothing of her captivity and stay in your house, and weep for her father and her mother for a full month. After that you may go in to her and become her husband, and she shall be your wife. 14 And if you take no pleasure in her, you shall send her away to go where she likes; you shall not sell her for money at all, and you shall not trade in her, because you have abused her. 15 If a man has two wives, one loved and the other hated, and they bear him sons, [both] the loved one and the hated one, and the firstborn son belongs to the hated one, 16 then on the day he divides what he has among his sons, he may not make the son of the loved one firstborn ahead of the son of the hated one, who is the firstborn. 17 Rather, he shall acknowledge the firstborn, the son of the hated one, by giving him a double share of all that is found with him, for he is the first of his strength, and the right of the firstborn is his. 18 If a man has a defiant and rebellious son who will not listen to the voice of his father or the voice of his mother, and they discipline him and he still will not listen to them, 19 his father and his mother shall take hold of him and bring him out to the elders of his city, to the gate of his place. 20 And they shall say to the men of his city, "This son of ours is defiant and rebellious; he will not listen to our voice; [he is] a glutton and a disgrace." 21 Then all the men of his city shall stone him with stones and he shall be killed. So you shall remove the evil from your midst, and all Israel will hear and be afraid. 22 If a man has committed a sin that carries a death sentence, and he is put to death, and you hang him on a tree, 23 you shall not leave his corpse overnight on the tree, but you shall be sure to bury him that same day, for one who is hanged is a curse of God. And you shall not defile your land, which Shema your God is giving you as a portion.

Chapter 22

1 You shall not see your companion's ox or his sheep or any of his livestock straying and turn away from them; you shall be sure to return them to your brother. 2 And if your brother is not near you and you do not know him, you shall gather it into your house, and it shall stay with you until your companion comes looking for it from you, and you shall return it to him. 3 You shall do the same with his donkey, and the same with his garment, and the same with anything your companion loses that goes missing from him and you find; you may not turn away. 4 You shall not see your brother's donkey or his ox or any of his livestock fallen on the road and turn away from them; you shall be sure to help him lift [them] up. 5 A man's gear shall not be on a woman, and a man shall not wear a woman's garment, for whoever does these [things] is detestable to Shema your God. 6 If you happen to come across a bird's nest on the road, in any tree or on the ground, [with] chicks or eggs, and the mother is sitting on her chicks or on her eggs, you shall not take the mother together with her young. 7 You shall be sure to let the mother go, but you may take the young for yourself, so that things may go well with you and you may live long. 8 When you build a new house, you shall make a railing for your roof, so that you do not bring blood on your house if someone falls from it. 9 You shall not sow your vineyard with mixed seed, or the whole yield will be forfeited as holy: the seed you sow and the produce of the vineyard. 10 You shall not plow with an ox and a donkey together. 11 You shall not wear mixed cloth, wool and linen together. 12 You shall make yourself tassels on the four corners of the covering you wrap yourself in. 13 If a man takes a wife, goes in to her, and then hates her, 14 and makes up charges against her, and gives her a bad name, saying, "I took this woman, and when I came near her I did not find virginity in her," 15 then the girl's father and her mother shall take and bring out the [evidence of the] girl's virginity to the elders of the city at the gate. 16 And the girl's father shall say to the elders, "I gave my daughter to this man as a wife, and he has come to hate her, 17 and now he has made up charges against her, saying, 'I did not find virginity in your daughter.' But here is the [evidence of] my daughter's virginity." And he shall spread out her garment before the elders of the city. 18 Then the elders of that city shall take that man and discipline him, 19 and they shall collect a hundred [pieces of] silver from him and give them to the girl's father, because he gave a virgin of Israel a bad name. And she shall remain his wife; he may not send her away as long as he lives. 20 But if the claim was true, [and evidence of] virginity was not found for the girl, 21 they shall bring the girl out to the door of her father's house, and the men of her city shall stone her with stones and she shall be killed, because she did a shameful thing in Israel by straying out of her father's house. So you shall remove the evil from your midst. 22 If a man is found lying with a woman who is married to a husband, both of them shall be killed, the man who lay with the woman and the woman. So you shall remove the evil from Israel. 23 If there is a girl, a virgin engaged to a man, and a man finds her in the city and lies with her, 24 you shall bring the two of them out to the gate of that city and stone them with stones, and they shall be put to death: the girl because she did not cry out in the city, and the man because he abused his neighbor's wife. So you shall remove the evil from your midst. 25 But if the man finds the engaged girl in the open country, and the man overpowers her and lies with her, then only the man who lay with her shall be killed. 26 You shall do nothing to the girl; the girl has no sin deserving death, for this case is like a man who rises against his neighbor and kills him. 27 For he found her in the open country; the engaged girl cried out, and there was no one to rescue her. 28 If a man finds a girl, a virgin who is not engaged, and seizes her and lies with her, and they are found out, 29 the man who lay with her shall give the girl's father fifty [pieces of] silver, and she shall be his wife, because he abused her; he may not send her away as long as he lives.

Chapter 23

1 A man shall not take his father's wife; he shall not uncover his father's hem. 2 No one with crushed [testicles] or with his outlet cut off shall enter the assembly of Shema. 3 A bastard shall not enter the assembly of Shema; even to the tenth generation none of his shall enter the assembly of Shema. 4 An Ammonite or a Moabite shall not enter the assembly of Shema; even to the tenth generation none of theirs shall enter the assembly of Shema, ever, 5 because they did not come to meet you with bread and water on the road when you came out of Egypt, and because he hired Balaam son of Beor, the interpreter from Aram Naharaim, against you to curse you. 6 But Shema your God was not willing to listen to Balaam, and Shema your God turned the curse into a blessing for you, because Shema your God loved you. 7 You shall not seek their peace or their welfare all your days, ever. 8 You shall not keep an Edomite at a distance, for he is your brother; you shall not keep an Egyptian at a distance, for you lived as a foreigner in his land. 9 Sons born to them in the third generation may enter the assembly of Shema. 10 When you go out in camp against your enemies, you shall keep yourself from every evil thing. 11 If there is a man among you who is not clean because of something that happened at night, he shall go outside the camp; he shall not come into the camp. 12 But when he has bathed his body in water and the sun has set, after that he may come into the camp. 13 You shall have a place outside the camp, and you shall go out there, outside, 14 and you shall have a peg with your weapons, and when you squat outside, you shall dig with it, and turn back and cover what has come out of you. 15 For Shema your God walks in the middle of your camp to rescue you and to hand your enemies over before you; so your camp shall be holy, and nothing shameful shall be seen among you, or he will turn away from following you. 16 You shall not hand over to his master a slave who escapes to you from his master. 17 He shall live with you, among you, in the place he chooses in one of your cities, wherever suits him; you shall not mistreat him. 18 There shall be no [cult] prostitute among the daughters of Israel, and no male [cult] prostitute among the sons of Israel. 19 You shall not bring a prostitute's fee or the price of a dog into the house of Shema your God for any vow, for both of them are detestable to Shema your God. 20 You shall not charge your brother increase: increase on money, increase on food, increase on anything that is lent for increase. 21 You may charge a foreigner increase, but you shall not charge your brother increase, so that Shema your God may bless you in every undertaking of your hands in the land you are entering to inherit. 22 When you make a vow to Shema your God, you shall not delay in paying it, for Shema your God will surely demand it of you, and there will be sin on you. 23 If you hold back from vowing, there will be no sin on you. 24 What comes out of your lips you shall keep and do, as you vowed to Shema [as] a freewill gift that you spoke with your mouth. 25 When you go into your neighbor's vineyard, you may eat grapes as much as you like, until you are full, but you shall not put [any] into your basket. 26 When you go into your neighbor's standing grain, you may pick ears with your hand, but you shall not swing a sickle at your neighbor's standing grain.

Chapter 24

1 If a man takes a wife and goes in to her and has relations with her, and it happens that love for her is not found in his eyes, because he has found something shameful in her, he writes her a document of release, puts it in her hand and sends her from his house, 2 and she leaves his house, and goes and becomes [the wife] of another man. 3 And the other man hates her, and writes her a document of release, and puts it in her hand, and sends her from his house; or if her other husband, who took her to himself as his wife, dies, 4 her first husband, who sent her away, cannot take her back to be his wife after she has been defiled, for that is an abomination before Shema. And you shall not bring guilt on the land that Shema your God gives you as a portion. 5 If a man takes a new wife, he shall not go out with the army, and nothing shall be laid on him in any matter. He shall be free for his household one year, and rejoice with his wife whom he has taken. 6 He shall not take a mill or an upper millstone in pledge, for it is a life that he takes in pledge. 7 If a man is found stealing a person from his brothers, from the children of Israel, and he trades in him or sells him, that thief shall be put to death, and you shall separate the evil from your midst. 8 Be careful in the plague of leprosy to take great care to do according to all the law that the Levite priests teach you. As I have commanded them, you shall take care to do. 9 Remember what your God did to Miriam on the way, when you came out of Egypt. 10 When you lend your neighbor a loan of anything, you shall not go inside to take his pledge. 11 You shall stand outside, and the man to whom you lend shall bring the pledge out to you, outside. 12 And if he is a poor man, you shall not sleep with his pledge. 13 You shall surely return the pledge to him when the sun goes in, and he will sleep in his covering and bless you, and it will be merit for you before Shema your God. 14 You shall not oppress a hired man who is poor and needy, whether of your brothers or of your residents who are in your land, in your cities. 15 On his day you shall give him his wages, and the sun shall not set on it, for he is poor, and on it he sets his soul, so that he does not cry out against you to Shema and there be sin in you. 16 Fathers shall not be put to death for sons, and sons shall not be put to death for their fathers. Each man shall be put to death for his own sin. 17 You shall not pervert the judgment of an orphaned sojourner, and you shall not take a widow's clothing in pledge. 18 And you shall remember that you were a slave in Egypt and that Shema your God redeemed you; that is why I am commanding you to do this thing. 19 When you reap your harvest in your field and forget a sheaf in the field, you shall not go back to take it. It shall be for the sojourner, for the orphan, and for the widow, so that Shema your God may bless you in all the work of your hands. 20 When you beat your olive tree, you shall not go over it again behind you. It shall be for the sojourner, for the orphan, and for the widow. 21 When you pick your vineyard, you shall not glean behind you. It shall be for the sojourner, for the orphan, and for the widow. 22 And you shall remember that you were a slave in the land of Egypt; therefore I am commanding you this thing.

Chapter 25

1 If there is a dispute between men, and they come before the judge, and you judge [them], they shall acquit the innocent and condemn the guilty. 2 And if the guilty man deserves a beating, the judge shall make him lie down before him, in proportion to his guilt, by number. 3 Forty [blows] he may strike him; he shall not add, lest he add to strike him beyond these with a heavy beating, and your brother be degraded in your eyes. 4 You shall not muzzle an ox in its threshing. 5 If brothers live together, and one of them dies and has no son, the dead man's wife shall not go outside to a stranger. Her husband's brother shall go in to her and take her to himself as his wife and perform the levirate duty with her. 6 And the firstborn son who is born shall stand in the name of his brother who died, so that his name is not wiped out from Israel. 7 And if the man is not willing to take his brother's wife, his brother's wife shall go up to the gate, before the elders, and say, "My husband's brother refuses to raise up a name for his brother in Israel; my husband's brother is not willing." 8 And the elders of his city shall call him and speak with him, and he stands and says, "I am not willing to take her," 9 then his brother's wife shall come up to him in the sight of the elders and pull his sandal off his foot and spit in his face, and answer and say, "So shall it be done to the man who does not build his brother's house." 10 And his name shall be called in Israel "the house of the one whose sandal was pulled off." 11 If men fight together, a man and his brother, and the wife of the one comes near to rescue her husband from the hand of the one striking him, and puts out her hand and seizes his flesh, 12 you shall cut off her hand; your eye shall not pity. 13 You shall not have in your hidden places one stone and another, a large and a small. 14 You shall not have in your house one measure and another, a large and a small. 15 A whole and true stone you shall have, a whole and true measure you shall have, so that your days may be long on the land that Shema your God gives you. 16 For everyone who does these things, everyone who does falsehood, is an abomination to Shema your God. 17 Remember what Amalek did to you on the road when you came out of Egypt, 18 how he met you on the way and attacked at your heels all the weak ones behind you, when you were hungry and weary, and he did not fear God. 19 And when Shema your God gives you rest from all your enemies round about, in the land that Shema your God gives you as a portion to inherit, you shall wipe out the memory of Amalek from under the heavens. Do not forget.

Chapter 26

1 And when you enter the land that Shema your God gives you as a portion, and you inherit it and live in it, 2 you shall take from the first of the fruit of the land that you bring from your land, which Shema your God gives you, and put [it] in a vessel, and go to the place that Shema your God has chosen to make his name dwell there. 3 And you shall come to the priest who is there in those days and say to him, "I have declared today to Shema your God that I have entered the land that Shema swore to our fathers to give us." 4 And the priest shall take the gift from your hand and set it before the altar of Shema your God. 5 And you shall answer and say before Shema your God, "An Aramean destroyed my father, and he went down to Egypt and lived there as a sojourner with very few, and there he became a great nation, strong and numerous. 6 And the Egyptians treated us badly and oppressed us and laid hard labor on us. 7 And we cried out to Shema, the God of our fathers, and Shema heard our voice and saw our oppression and our toil and our affliction. 8 And Shema brought us out of Egypt with a strong hand and an outstretched arm, and with a great vision, and with signs, and with wonders. 9 And he brought us into this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey. 10 And now, here, I have brought from the first of the fruit of the land that you, Shema, have given me." And you shall set it before Shema your God and bow down before Shema your God. 11 And you shall rejoice in all the good that Shema your God has given you and your household, you and the Levite and the sojourner who is in your midst. 12 When you finish tithing all the tithe of your produce in the third year, the year of tithing, and give it to the Levite, to the sojourner, to the orphan, and to the widow, and they eat in your cities and are satisfied, 13 then you shall say before Shema your God, "I have separated the holy [portion] from the house, and I have also given it, according to all the commandments you commanded me, to the Levite, the sojourner, the orphan and the widow. I have not passed over your commandments, and I have not forgotten. 14 I have not eaten of it in my poverty, and I have not separated any of it while unclean, and I have not given any of it to the dead. I have listened to the voice of Shema my God; I have done according to all that you commanded me. 15 Look down from your holy dwelling, from heaven, and bless your people Israel and the land that you have given us, as you swore to our fathers, a land flowing with milk and honey." 16 This day Shema your God commands you to do these statutes, the judgments; and you shall keep and do them with all your heart and with all your soul. 17 You have declared Shema today to be God to you, and to walk in his paths, and to keep his statutes and his commandments, and to listen to his voice. 18 And Shema has declared you today to be a treasured people to him, as he spoke to you, and to keep all his commandments, 19 and to set you high above all the nations that he made, for praise, for a name, and for greatness, and for you to be a holy people to Shema your God, as he spoke.

Chapter 27

1 Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people: "Keep every commandment that I am commanding you today. 2 On the day you cross the Jordan into the land that Shema your God is giving you, set up great stones for yourself and coat them with plaster. 3 Write on them all the words of this law when you cross, so that you may enter the land that Shema your God is giving you, a land flowing with milk and honey, as Shema, the God of your fathers, promised you. 4 And when you cross the Jordan, set up these stones that I am commanding you today on Mount Gerizim, and coat them with plaster. 5 Build an altar there to Shema your God, an altar of stones; do not pass iron over them. 6 Build the altar of Shema your God from whole stones, and offer burnt offerings on it to Shema your God. 7 Sacrifice peace offerings and eat there, and rejoice before Shema your God. 8 Write on the stones all the words of this law, explained clearly and well." 9 Then Moses and the Levite priests spoke with all Israel: "Listen and hear, Israel! This day you have become a holy people to Shema your God. 10 Obey the voice of Shema your God, and carry out his commandments and his statutes that I am commanding you today." 11 On that same day Moses commanded the people: 12 "These shall stand on Mount Gerizim to bless the people when you cross the Jordan: Simeon, Levi, Judah, Issachar, Joseph and Benjamin. 13 And these shall stand for the curse on Mount Ebal: Reuben, Gad, Asher, Zebulun, Dan and Naphtali. 14 The Levites shall respond and say to every man of Israel in a loud voice: 15 'Cursed is the man who makes a carved or cast image, an abomination to Shema, the work of a craftsman's hands, and sets it up in secret.' And all the people shall respond and say, 'Amen.' 16 'Cursed is whoever treats his father or his mother with contempt.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' 17 'Cursed is whoever shifts his neighbor's boundary.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' 18 'Cursed is whoever leads a blind person astray on the path.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' 19 'Cursed is whoever twists the judgment of the stranger, the orphan and the widow.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' 20 'Cursed is whoever lies with his father's wife, for he has uncovered his father's covering.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' 21 'Cursed is whoever lies with any animal.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' 22 'Cursed is whoever lies with his sister, his father's daughter or his mother's daughter.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' 23 'Cursed is whoever lies with his mother-in-law.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' 24 'Cursed is whoever strikes his neighbor in secret.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' 25 'Cursed is whoever takes money to kill a person, [shedding] innocent blood.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.' 26 'Cursed is whoever does not uphold all the words of this law by doing them.' And all the people shall say, 'Amen.'"

Chapter 28

1 And it will be, if you truly listen to the voice of Shema your God, to keep and to do all his commandments that I command you today, Shema your God will set you supreme over all the nations of the land. 2 And all these blessings will come upon you and overtake you when you listen to the voice of Shema your God. 3 Blessed are you in the town, and blessed are you in the open country. 4 And blessed is the fruit of your womb, and the fruit of your land, and the fruit of your livestock, the increase of your cattle and the flocks of your sheep. 5 Blessed is your basket and your kneading bowl. 6 Blessed are you in your coming in, and blessed are you in your going out. 7 Shema will make your enemies who rise against you beaten down before you; by one road they will come out toward you, and by seven paths they will flee before you. 8 Shema will command the blessing to be with you in your storehouses and in every undertaking of your hands, and he will bless you in the land that Shema your God is giving you. 9 Shema will establish you as a holy people to himself, as he swore to you, when you keep the commandments of Shema your God and walk in his paths. 10 And all the peoples of the land will see that the name of Shema is called over you, and they will be afraid of you. 11 And Shema will give you abundance for good in the fruit of your womb, and in the fruit of your livestock, and in the fruit of your land, on the land that Shema swore to your fathers to give you. 12 Shema will open to you the good treasury, the heavens, to give the rain of your land in its time, to bless all the work of your hands; and you will lend to many nations, but you will not borrow. 13 And Shema will make you the head and not the heel, and you will be only on top and not underneath, when you listen to the commandments of Shema your God that I command you today, to keep and to do [them], 14 and do not turn away from any of his words that I command you today, right or left, to go after other gods to serve them. 15 And it will be, if you do not listen to the voice of Shema your God, to keep his commandments and his decrees that I command you today, all these curses will come upon you and overtake you. 16 Cursed are you in the town, and cursed are you in the open country. 17 Cursed is your basket and your kneading bowl. 18 Cursed is the fruit of your womb, and the fruit of your land, and the fruit of your livestock, the increase of your cattle and the flocks of your sheep. 19 Cursed are you in your coming in, and cursed are you in your going out. 20 Shema will send against you bitterness and turmoil and rebuke in every undertaking of your hands that you carry out, until you are destroyed and until you perish quickly, because of the evil of your false ways, in that you have forsaken me. 21 Shema [will make] the plague [cling] to you, until he has wiped you out from the land that you are entering to inherit it. 22 Shema will strike you with wasting, and with dimness, and with inflammation, and with feverish burning, and with drought, and with blight, and with yellowing; they will pursue you until you perish. 23 And your heavens above your head will be bronze, and the land beneath you iron. 24 Shema will turn the rain of your land into dust and dirt; it will come down on you from the heavens until you are destroyed. 25 Shema will make you broken before your enemies: by one road you will go out toward him, and by seven roads you will flee before him; and you will be a horror to all the kingdoms of the land. 26 And your corpse will be food for the birds of the heavens and for the animals of the land, and no one will scare [them] away. 27 Shema will strike you with the boils of Egypt, and with tumors, and with scabs that you cannot be healed of. 28 Shema will strike you with madness, and with blindness, and with bewilderment of heart. 29 And you will grope about at noon as a blind man gropes in the darkness, and your road will not prosper; and you will be nothing but oppressed and plundered all the time, and there will be no one to rescue [you]. 30 You will betroth a woman, and another man will lie with her; you will build a house and not live in it; you will plant a vineyard and not put it to common use. 31 Your ox will be slaughtered before your eyes, and you will not eat any of it; your donkey will be seized from in front of you and will not come back [to you]; all your sheep will be handed to your enemies, and you will have no one to rescue [you]. 32 Your sons and your daughters will be handed to another people, and your eyes will look on and waste away for them all day long, and there will be no strength in your hand. 33 And the fruit of your land and all your toil a people you have not known will eat up, and you will be nothing but oppressed and crushed all the time. 34 And you will be driven mad by what your eyes see. 35 Shema will strike you with an evil boil on the knees and on the legs, which you cannot be healed of, from the sole of your foot to the top of your head. 36 Shema will lead you and your king whom you set up over you to a nation that neither you nor your fathers have known, and there you will serve other gods, wood and stone. 37 And you will become a byword, and a proverb, and an object of hatred among all the peoples where Shema will drive you. 38 Much seed you will take out to the field, and little you will gather in, for the locust will finish it off. 39 Vineyards you will plant and tend, but you will not drink wine or store [it], for the worm will eat it. 40 You will have olive trees throughout all your borders, but you will not rub on oil, for your olives will drop off. 41 Sons and daughters you will father, but they will not be yours, for they will go into captivity. 42 All your trees and the fruit of your land the whirring locust will seize. 43 The foreigner who is in your midst will go up above you higher and higher, and you will go down lower and lower. 44 He will lend to you, and you will not lend to him; he will be the head, and you will be the heel. 45 And all these curses will come upon you and pursue you and overtake you until you are destroyed, because you did not listen to the voice of Shema your God, to keep his commandments and decrees that he commanded you. 46 And they will be on you as a sign and a wonder, and on your offspring forever. 47 Because you did not serve Shema your God with joy and with goodness of heart, out of the abundance of everything, 48 you will serve your enemies whom Shema will send against you, in hunger and in thirst and in nakedness and in lack of everything; and he will put an iron yoke on your neck until he has destroyed you. 49 Shema will raise up against you a nation from far away, from the edge of the land, as the eagle appears, a nation whose language you will not understand, 50 a nation hard of face, that will not lift up the face of the elder or have pity on the child, 51 and it will eat the fruit of your livestock and the fruit of your land until you are destroyed, and it will leave you no grain, nothing dry or moist, no increase of your cattle or flocks of your sheep, until it has made you perish. 52 And it will hem you in, in all your towns, until your high and lofty walls that you trust in come down throughout all your land; and it will hem you in, in all your towns, throughout all your land that Shema your God has given you. 53 And you will eat the fruit of your womb, the flesh of your sons and your daughters whom he gave you, in the distress and in the oppression with which your enemies will oppress you. 54 The man who is tender among you and very delicate, his eye will be evil toward his brother, and toward the wife of his bosom, and toward the rest of his children who are left, 55 so as not to give any one of them some of the flesh of his children that he eats, because nothing at all is left to him, in the distress and in the oppression with which your enemies will oppress you in all your towns. 56 The tender and delicate woman among you, who has never tried to set the sole of her foot on the ground out of daintiness and tenderness, her eye will be evil toward the husband of her bosom, toward her son, and toward her daughter, 57 and toward her afterbirth that comes out from between her legs, and toward her children whom she bears, for she will eat them in secret for lack of everything, in the distress and in the oppression with which your enemies will oppress you in your towns. 58 If you do not take care to do all the words of this law that are written in this book, to fear this glorious and awesome [name], Shema your God, 59 then Shema your God will single out your plagues and the blows of your offspring, great and lasting plagues, and evil and lasting sicknesses. 60 And he will bring back on you all the afflictions of Egypt that you were afraid of, and they will cling to you. 61 Also every sickness and every blow that is not written in the book of this law, Shema will bring up on you until he destroys you. 62 And you will be left few in number, instead of being like the stars of the heavens in multitude, because you did not listen to the voice of Shema your God. 63 And as Shema delighted over you to do you good and to multiply you, so Shema will delight over you to make you perish and to wipe you out; and you will be finished off from the land that you are entering to inherit it. 64 And Shema will scatter you among all the peoples, from the edge of the land to the edge of the land; and there you will serve other gods that neither you nor your fathers have known, wood and stone. 65 And among those nations you will find no support, and there will be no resting place for the sole of your foot; and Shema will give you there a trembling heart, eyes gone blind, and faintness of soul. 66 And your life will hang in front of you, and you will be afraid night and day, and you will have no confidence in your life. 67 In the morning you will say, "If only it were evening!" and in the evening you will say, "If only it were morning!" because of the fear of your heart that you will feel and because of the sight of your eyes that you will see. 68 And Shema will bring you back to Egypt in ships, by the road of which I told you, "You will never see it again"; and there you will sell yourselves to your enemies as male and female slaves, and there will be no buyer. 69 These are the words of the covenant which, in the land of Moab, Shema commanded Moses to make with the children of Israel, besides the covenant that he made with them at Horeb.

Chapter 29

1 And Moses summoned all Israel and said to them, "Before your own eyes you have seen everything Shema did in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh, to all his servants and to his whole land: 2 the great trials that your eyes saw, the signs and those great wonders. 3 Yet Shema has not given you a heart to know, or eyes to see, or ears to hear, until this day. 4 And I led you forty years in the wilderness; your garments did not wear out from on you, and your shoes did not wear out from on your feet. 5 Bread you did not eat, and wine and strong drink you did not drink, so that you might know that I am Shema your God. 6 And you came to this place, and Sihon king of Heshbon and Og king of Bathnin came out to meet us in battle, and we killed them, 7 and we took their land and gave it as a share to the Reubenites and to the Gadites and to half the tribe of the Manassites. 8 So keep the words of this covenant and do them, so that you may prosper in all that you do. 9 You are standing today, all of you, before Shema your God: your heads, your tribes, your wise men and your scribes, every man of Israel, 10 your little ones, your wives, and your proselyte who is within your camps, from the cutter of your wood to the drawer of your water, 11 so that you may pass into the covenant of Shema your God and into the oath of Shema your God, which he is cutting with you today, 12 and so that he may establish you today as a people for himself, and he will be God to you, as he spoke to you and as he swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob. 13 And not with you alone am I cutting this covenant and this oath, 14 but with whoever stands here with us today before Shema our God, and with whoever is not here with us today. 15 For you know how you dwelt in the land of Egypt, and how we passed through the midst of the nations through which you passed, 16 and you saw their abominations and their idols, wood and stone, silver and gold, that were among them. 17 [Beware] lest there be among you a man or a woman or a family or a tribe whose heart turns away from Shema our God, to go and serve the gods of those nations; lest there be among you a root bearing poison and wormwood, 18 and when he hears the words of this curse, he blesses himself in his heart, saying, 'I will have peace, even though I walk in the stubbornness of my heart,' so as to sweep away the watered along with the parched. 19 Shema will not be willing to forgive him; rather, the anger of Shema and his jealousy will then blaze against that man, and all the curses written in this book will settle on him, and Shema will wipe out his name from under the heavens. 20 And Shema will set him apart for evil from all the tribes of Israel, according to all the curses of the covenant written in this book of the law. 21 And the later generation will say, your children who rise up after you, and the foreigner who comes from a distant land, when he sees the blows of that land and the afflictions with which Shema has afflicted it: 22 'Sulfur and salt, all its land is burning; it is not sown and it does not sprout, and no grass at all comes up in it, like the overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah, Admah and Zeboiim, which Shema overthrew in his anger and in his fury.' 23 And all the nations will say, 'Why has Shema done this to this land? Why this fierce and great anger?' 24 And they will say, 'Because they forsook the covenant of Shema, the God of their fathers, which he cut with them when he brought them out of the land of Egypt, 25 and they went and served other gods and bowed down to them, gods they had not known and that he had not allotted to them. 26 And the anger of Shema blazed against that land, to bring upon it all the curses written in this book. 27 And Shema uprooted them from their land in anger and in fury and in great wrath, and cast them into another land, as it is this day.' 28 The hidden things belong to Shema our God, and the revealed things belong to us and to our children forever, so that we may do all the words of this law.

Chapter 30

1 And when all these words come upon you, the blessing and the curse that I have set before you, and you bring [them] back to your heart among all the nations where Shema your God makes you wander, 2 and you return to Shema your God and listen to his voice, you and your children, with all your heart and all your soul, according to everything I command you today, 3 then Shema your God will return along with your return, and he will have mercy on you and will again gather you from all the peoples among whom Shema your God scattered you. 4 If your strays are at the end of the heavens, from there Shema your God will gather you, and from there he will take you. 5 And Shema your God will bring you into the land that your fathers inherited, and you will inherit it, and he will make you more numerous than your fathers. 6 And Shema your God will circumcise your heart and the heart of your seed, to love Shema your God with all your heart and with all your soul, so that you may live. 7 And Shema your God will lay all these curses on your enemies and on those who hate you, who pursued you. 8 And you will return and listen to the voice of Shema your God and do all his commandments that I command you today. 9 And Shema your God will give you abundance in all the work of your hands, in the fruit of your womb, in the fruit of your land, and in the fruit of your cattle, for good; for Shema will again delight in you for good, as he delighted in your fathers, 10 when you listen to the voice of Shema your God, to keep his commandments and his decrees written in this book of the law, when you return to Shema your God with all your heart and with all your soul. 11 For this commandment that I command you today is not too wondrous for you, nor is it far off. 12 It is not in the heavens, that one should say, 'Who will go up to the heavens for us and take it for us and let us hear it, so that we may do it?' 13 Nor is it across the sea, that one should say, 'Who will cross to the other side of the sea for us and take it for us and let us hear it, so that we may do it?' 14 For the word is near to you, firmly in your mouth and in your heart, so that you may do it. 15 See, I have set before you life and good, and death and evil, 16 in that I command you today to love Shema your God, to walk in his ways, to keep his commandments, his decrees, and his judgments, so that you may live and multiply, and Shema your God will bless you in the land that you are entering to inherit it. 17 But if your heart turns aside and you do not listen, and you go astray and bow down to other gods and serve them, 18 I declare to you today that you will surely perish; you will not lengthen [your] days on the land for which you are crossing the Jordan, to enter there to inherit it. 19 I call heaven and earth to witness against you today: life and death I have set before you, the blessing and the curse; so choose life, so that you may live, you and your seed, 20 by loving Shema your God, listening to his voice, and drawing near to him; for he is your life and the length of your days, to dwell on the land that Shema swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to give to you."

Chapter 31

1 And Moses went and spoke these words with all Israel. 2 And he said to them, "I am a hundred and twenty years old today; I can no longer go out and come in, and Shema has said to me, 'You shall not cross this Jordan.' 3 Shema your God, he is the one crossing before you; he will destroy these nations from before you, and you will dispossess them; and Joshua, he is the one crossing before you, as Shema has spoken. 4 And Shema will do to them as he did to Sihon and to Og, the kings of the Amorites, and to their land, when he destroyed them. 5 And Shema will hand them over before you, and you will do to them according to all the commandment that I have commanded you. 6 Be strong and take courage; do not fear and do not be terrified before them, for Shema your God, he is the one going with you; he will not let you go and will not forsake you." 7 And Moses called Joshua and said to him before the eyes of all Israel, "Be strong and take courage, for you will bring this people into the land that Shema swore to their fathers to give them, and you will give it to them as an inheritance. 8 And Shema, he is the one going before you, and he will be with you; he will not let you go and will not forsake you. Do not fear and do not be dismayed." 9 And Moses wrote this law and gave it into the hand of the priests, the sons of Levi, who carried the ark of the covenant of Shema, and to all the elders of Israel. 10 And Moses commanded them, saying, "At the end of seven years, at the time of the year of release, at the Feast of Booths, 11 when all Israel comes to appear as a people before Shema your God in the place that he has chosen, he shall read this law in front of all Israel in their hearing. 12 Gather the people, the men and the women and the little ones, and your proselyte who is in your towns, so that they may hear and so that they may learn, and fear Shema their God, and take care to do all the words of this law. 13 And their children who have not known will hear and learn to fear Shema their God all the days that they stand on the soil to which you are crossing the Jordan, there to inherit it." 14 And Shema said to Moses, "See, your days have drawn near to die. Call Joshua, and present yourselves in the Tent of Meeting, so that I may commission him." And Moses and Joshua went and presented themselves in the Tent of Meeting. 15 And Shema revealed himself in the tent in a pillar of cloud, and the pillar of cloud stood at the entrance of the tent. 16 And Shema said to Moses, "See, you are lying down with your fathers, and this people will rise up and prostitute itself after the foreign gods of the land into which it is entering, among them, and they will forsake me and annul my pact that I cut with them. 17 And my anger will blaze against it on that day, and I will forsake them and hide my face from them, and they will become [something] to be devoured, and many evils and troubles will find it, and it will say on that day, 'Is it not because my God is not in my midst that these evils have found me?' 18 And I will surely hide my face from them on that day for all the evil they have done, because they turned toward other gods. 19 And now write for yourselves this song and teach it to the children of Israel; it will settle in their mouths, so that this song may be a witness for me against the children of Israel. 20 For I will bring them into the land that I swore to their fathers to give them, flowing with milk and honey, and they will eat and be satisfied and grow fat, and turn toward other gods and serve them, and despise me and annul my pact. 21 And when many evils and troubles find it, this song will answer before it as a witness, for it will not be forgotten from the mouth of its seed; for I know its purpose that it is shaping today, before I have brought it into the land that I swore to its fathers." 22 And Moses wrote this song on that day and taught it to the children of Israel. 23 And he commanded Joshua son of Nun and said, "Be strong and take courage, for you will bring the children of Israel into the land that I swore to them, and I will be with you." 24 And when Moses had finished writing the words of this law in a book until they were complete, 25 Moses commanded the Levites who carried the ark of the covenant of Shema, saying, 26 "Take this book of the law and place it beside the ark of the covenant of Shema your God, and it will be there as a witness against you. 27 For I know your rebellion and your stiff neck; look, while I am still standing with you today, you have been rebellious against Shema; how much more after my death! 28 Gather to me all the wise men of your tribes and your scribes, so that in their hearing I may speak these words and call heaven and earth to witness against them. 29 For I know that after my death you will act utterly corruptly and turn aside from the path that I commanded you, and evil will befall you at the end of days, because you will do what is evil in the sight of Shema, provoking him with the work of your hands." 30 And Moses spoke in the hearing of all the assembly of Israel the words of this song to their completion:

Chapter 32

1 Listen, you heavens, and I will speak; and let the earth hear the sayings of my mouth. 2 My teaching will drip like the rain, my saying will trickle like the dew, like showers on the pasture and like dews on the grass. 3 For I will call on the name of Shema; give greatness to our God. 4 The Rock, whose work is complete, for all his paths are judgment. A faithful God, and there is no falsehood [in him]; true and worthy of praise is he. 5 They have spoiled [themselves]; the children of confusion are not his, a crooked, twisted and false generation. 6 Is this how you repay Shema, you rash and unwise people? Is he not your father who rules over you? He made you and set you firm. 7 Remember the days of old; consider the years of generation after generation. Ask your father, and he will show you; your elders, and they will tell you. 8 When the Eternal One apportioned the nations, when he divided the children of Adam, he fixed the borders of the peoples by the number of the children of Israel. 9 For Shema's share is his people Jacob; Israel is the lot of his portion. 10 He made him strong in the wilderness land and settled him in praise; he surrounded him, took him as a son, and guarded him like the spark of his eye. 11 Like an eagle that rouses its nest and hovers over its young, he spreads his wings, takes him up, and carries him on his pinions. 12 Shema alone guided him, and no outside power was with him. 13 He set him riding on the heights of the earth; he fed him the fruits of the field; he nursed him on honey from the mighty [rock], and on oil from the flint of the crag. 14 Cream of the cattle and fat of the sheep, with cream of fatlings and rams, sons of Bathnin, and goats, with the kidney-fat of wheat; and the blood of the grape you drank as wine. 15 Jacob ate and was satisfied; Kashira grew fat and rebelled. You grew fat, you grew thick, you grew sleek. And he abandoned the Mighty One who made him, and they treated the Strength of his deliverance with contempt. 16 They made him jealous with outsiders, and with shameful things they angered him. 17 They sacrificed to demons that are no God, to gods they had not known, new ones that came from close by, whom your fathers did not fear. 18 The Strength who fathered you, you despised, and you forgot the Mighty One who praised you. 19 And Shema saw, and he recoiled at the provocation of his sons and his daughters. 20 And he said, "I will hide my face from them and see what their end will be, for they are a generation of upheaval, sons who have no faithfulness in them. 21 They made me jealous with what is no god; they angered me with their empty things. So I will make them jealous with what is no people; with a rash nation I will anger them. 22 For a fire blazes from my anger and rages down to the depths of Sheol; it consumes the earth and its yield and sets the foundations of the mountains ablaze. 23 I will heap evils upon them; I will use up my arrows against them. 24 From this [comes] hunger; their food is flame. Ravaging predators and the teeth of beasts I will send against them, with the venom of things that crawl in the dust. 25 Outside, the sword will devour, and from the inner rooms [comes] terror, for young man and maiden alike, the nursing child with the gray-haired man. 26 I said, 'I will rage at them; I will wipe out their memory from among the angels,' 27 were it not for the provocation of the enemy that I dread, lest our oppressors misread [it], lest they say, 'Our hand is exalted, and Shema did not do all this.' 28 For they are a nation that has lost its counsel, and there is no insight in them. 29 They were not wise enough to set this right and to consider what will become of them. 30 How could one pursue a thousand, and two make ten thousand flee, unless their Rock had sold them and Shema had handed them over? 31 For their strength is not like our Rock, and their enemies entice [them]. 32 For their vine comes from the plantings of Sodom, and their grapes from the fields of Gomorrah; their grapes are grapes of poison, and they have bitter clusters. 33 Their wine is the venom of serpents and the poison of wild asps. 34 Is it not hidden away with me, sealed up in my treasuries? 35 For the day of repayment and requital, at the time their feet slip. For the day of their disaster is near, and what is ready for them hurries on. 36 When Shema judges his people and shows forbearance toward his servants, when he sees that [their] hand has gone and they are spent, bond and free, 37 they will say, "Where are their gods, the strong one in whom they trusted, 38 who ate the fat of their sacrifices and drank the wine of their libations? Let them rise and help you; let them be a shield over you." 39 See now that I, I am he, and there is no god with me. I put to death and I bring to life; I struck and I heal, and there is no one who rescues from my hand. 40 For I raise my hand to the heights and say, 'I live forever,' 41 if I sharpen the edge of my sword and my hand takes hold of judgment, I will turn vengeance back on my oppressors and pay back those who hate me. 42 I will make my arrows drunk with blood, and my sword will devour flesh, from the blood of the slain and the captive, from the head of the enemy's chiefs. 43 Praise his people, you nations, for he avenges the blood of his servants, and turns vengeance back on his oppressors, and cleanses the land of his people." 44 And Moses came, he and Joshua son of Nun, and spoke all the words of this song for the people to hear. 45 And Moses finished speaking these words to all Israel, 46 and he said to them, "Set your hearts on all the words that I testify to you today, which you shall command your sons to keep and to do, all the words of this law. 47 For it is not an empty word for you; it is your life, and by this word you will lengthen [your] days on the land that you are crossing the Jordan to go there and inherit." 48 And Shema spoke with Moses on that same day, saying, 49 "Go up to this mountain of Abarim, Mount Nebo, which is in the land of Moab, facing Jericho, and see the land of Canaan, which I am giving to the children of Israel as a possession. 50 And die on the mountain that you are climbing there, and be gathered to your people, just as Aaron your brother died on Mount Tura and was gathered to his people, 51 because you dealt falsely with me among the children of Israel at the waters of the Quarrel of Kadesh, in the wilderness of Zin, because you did not sanctify me among the children of Israel. 52 For you will see the land from across the way, but you will not enter there, into the land that I am giving to the children of Israel."

Chapter 33

1 And this is the blessing that Moses, the man of God, pronounced over the children of Israel before he died. 2 And he said: “Shema came from Sinai, and shone out on them from Gebala. He blazed forth from Mount Paran, and with him [came some] of the myriads of holiness. At his right hand was a law of fire for them. 3 He even loves the peoples, and all his holy ones are in your hand. They bow down at your feet and receive [some] of your sayings. 4 A law Moses laid on us as a charge, a heritage for the assemblies of Jacob. 5 And there was a king among the upright, when the heads of the people gathered, the tribes of Israel as one. 6 Let Reuben live and not die, and let a count [be taken] from his people. 7 And this [is] for Judah, and he said: ‘Hear, Shema, the voice of Judah, and bring him to his people. His hand fights for him, and you will be a help against his foes.’ 8 And of Levi he said: ‘Your Thummim and your Urim [belong] to your consecrated man, whom you tested at Massah, and with whom you contended at the waters of Strife, 9 the one who says to his father and his mother, “I have not seen [you],” and did not regard his brother, and did not know his son. For they kept your saying, and they will keep your covenant. 10 They will teach your judgments to Jacob and your laws to Israel. They will set incense before your anger, and an offering on your altar. 11 Bless, Shema, his strength, and be pleased with the work of his hand. Strike the loins of those who rise against him, and his haters, who will raise them up?’ 12 And of Benjamin he said: ‘[By] the hand, the hand of Shema he will dwell securely. He hovers over him all the days, and he dwells between his shoulders.’ 13 And of Joseph he said: ‘Blessed by Shema is his land, with the choicest gifts of the heavens, with dew, and from the deep that lies below, 14 and from the choicest produce of the sun, and from the choicest harvests of the months, 15 and from the top of the ancient mountains, and from the choicest gifts of the everlasting hills, 16 and from the choicest gifts of the earth and its fullness, and the favor of him who dwelt in the bush. Let its produce [come] on the head of Joseph, and on the crown of the prince among his brothers. 17 The firstborn of his cattle, glory is his, and his horns are the horns of a wild ox. With them he will gore the peoples, all together, [to] the ends of the earth. These are the myriads of Ephraim, and these are the thousands of Manasseh.’ 18 And of Zebulun he said: ‘Rejoice, Zebulun, in your going out, and Issachar, in your tents. 19 Peoples will be called to [my] mountain, and there they will offer sacrifices of merit. For he will suck the waves of the seas, and they will lay hold of the hidden things of the sand.’ 20 And of Gad he said: ‘Blessed is he who makes Gad wide. He settles like a lioness, tearing the arm and also the crown [of the head]. 21 And he saw the first [part] for himself, for there the marked portion of the lawgiver was hidden. And he joined the heads of the people. He carried out the merit of Shema, and his rulings with Israel.’ 22 And of Dan he said: ‘Dan is a lion’s cub; he will spring out from Bathnin.’ 23 And of Naphtali he said: ‘Naphtali is satisfied and well pleasing, and filled with the blessing of Shema. He will take possession of the west and the south.’ 24 And of Asher he said: ‘Blessed above sons is Asher. Let him be pleasing to his brothers, and let him dip his feet in oil. 25 Iron and bronze are your bolts, and as your days, so your greatness.’ 26 There is none like the Mighty One, O praised one, who rides the heavens to help you, and the skies in his strength, 27 the dwelling of the God of old, and beneath [are] the arms of the world. And he will drive the enemy out before you and say, ‘Destroy!’ 28 And Israel has dwelt securely, alone, the spring of Jacob, on a land of grain and new wine, and your heavens too will drip dew. 29 Happy are you, Israel! Who is like you, a people rescued by Shema, the shield of your help and the sword of your strength? Your enemies will make false submission to you, and you will tread on their heights.”

Chapter 34

1 And Moses went up from the plain of Moab to Mount Nebo, the top of Sekhita, which faces Jericho. And Shema showed him the whole land, from the river of Egypt as far as the great river, the river Euphrates, and to the farthest sea. 2 This verse is excluded. 3 This verse is excluded. 4 And Shema said to him: “This is the land that I swore to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac and to Jacob, saying, ‘To your descendants I will give it.’ I have let you see it with your eyes, but you will not cross over there.” 5 And Moses, the servant of Shema, died there in the land of Moab, at the command of Shema. 6 He buried [him] in the valley in the land of Moab, opposite Beth Peor, and no one knows his grave to this day. 7 And Moses was a hundred and twenty years old at his death. His eye had not grown dim, and his freshness had not fled. 8 And the children of Israel wept for Moses in the plain of Moab thirty days, and the days of weeping, the mourning for Moses, came to an end. 9 And Joshua son of Nun was full of the spirit of wisdom, for Moses had laid his hand on him. And the children of Israel listened to him and did as Shema had commanded Moses. 10 And no prophet has risen again in Israel like Moses, whom Shema knew face to face, 11 in all the signs and wonders that Shema sent him to perform in the land of Egypt, to Pharaoh and to all his servants and to all his land, 12 and in all the strong hand, and in all the great sight, that Moses worked before the eyes of all Israel.
