Chapter 1

1 And Shema called Moses and spoke to him from the tent of meeting, saying: 2 “Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them, ‘When any man among you offers an offering to Shema, you shall offer your offerings of the cattle from the herd and from the flock. 3 If his offering is a burned offering from the herd, he shall offer a male without blemish; he shall offer it at the entrance of the tent of meeting, so that he may be accepted in the presence of Shema. 4 And he shall lay his hand on the head of the burned offering, and it shall be accepted for him to make atonement for him. 5 And he shall kill the bull in the presence of Shema, and Aaron’s sons, the priests, shall present the blood, and sprinkle the blood all around on the altar that is at the entrance of the tent of meeting. 6 And they shall skin the burned offering and they shall cut it into its parts. 7 And the sons of Aaron, the priests, shall put fire on the altar, and they shall lay out wood on the fire; 8 and Aaron’s sons, the priests, shall lay out the pieces, and the head, and the fat on the wood that is on the fire, which is on the altar; 9 and they shall wash its internal organs and its legs with water. And the priest shall burn the whole on the altar; it is a burned offering, an offering made by fire of a pleasing aroma to Shema.

10 And if his gift to Shema is a burned offering from the flock, from the sheep, and from the goats, he shall offer a male without blemish; he shall offer it at the entrance of the tent of meeting. 11 And he shall kill it on the north side of the altar in the presence of Shema, and Aaron’s sons, the priests, shall sprinkle its blood on the altar all around. 12 And they shall cut it into pieces; the priest shall arrange its head and its fat on the wood that is on the fire, which is on the altar, 13 but he shall wash the internal organs and the legs with water. And the priest shall offer the whole, and burn it on the altar; it is a burned offering, an offering made by fire of a pleasing aroma to Shema.

14 And if his gift to Shema is a burned offering of birds, then he shall offer his offering from the turtledoves or from the young pigeons. 15 And the priest shall bring it to the altar and wring off its head and burn it on the altar. And its blood shall be drained out to the side of the altar. 16 And he shall take away its gallbladder with its filth and throw it beside the altar on the east side, in the place of the ashes. 17 And he shall tear it by its wings, and shall not divide it. And the priest shall burn it on the altar, on the wood that is on the fire; it is a burned offering, an offering made by fire of a pleasing aroma to Shema.

Chapter 2

1 And when anyone offers a grain offering to Shema, his offering shall be of fine flour; and he shall pour oil on it, and put frankincense on it; it is a grain offering. 2 And he shall bring it to Aaron’s sons, the priests. And he shall take from it a handful of its fine flour, and of its oil, with all its frankincense; and the priest shall burn it as its memorial part on the altar, an offering made by fire of a pleasing aroma to Shema. 3 And the remainder of the grain offering [shall be] for Aaron and his sons; it is a most holy part of the offerings of Shema made by fire.

4 And when you offer a grain offering baked in an oven, [it shall be] unleavened cakes of fine flour mixed with oil, or unleavened wafers spread with oil. 5 And if your offering is a grain offering cooked on a baking pan, it shall be of fine flour unleavened, mixed with oil. 6 Break it into pieces, and pour oil on it; it is a grain offering. 7 And if your sacrifice is an offering cooked in a stewing pan, it shall be made of fine flour with oil. 8 And you shall bring the grain offering that is made of these things to Shema, and it shall be presented to the priest, and he shall bring it to the altar. 9 And the priest shall take up from the grain offering its memorial, and shall burn it on the altar, an offering made by fire of a pleasing aroma to Shema. 10 And the remainder of the grain offering shall be for Aaron and his sons; it is a most holy part of the offerings of Shema made by fire. 11 No grain offering, which you shall offer to Shema, shall be made with leaven; for you shall offer no leaven nor any honey as an offering made by fire to Shema. 12 As an offering of first fruits you shall offer them to Shema, but they shall not be offered for a pleasing aroma on the altar. 13 And you shall season every grain offering with salt; you shall not omit the salt of the covenant of your God from your grain offerings; with all your offerings you shall offer salt.

14 And if you offer a grain offering of firstfruits to Shema, you shall offer grain in the head, grain roasted with fire, crushed grain from the fresh head as the grain offering of your firstfruits. 15 And you shall put oil on it, and lay frankincense on it; it is a grain offering. 16 And the priest shall burn its memorial part of its crushed grain and part of its oil, with all its frankincense, as an offering made by fire to Shema.

Chapter 3

1 And if his offering is a sacrifice of peace offering, if he offers an animal from the herd, whether male or female, he shall offer it without blemish in the presence of Shema. 2 And he shall lay his hand on the head of his offering, and kill it at the entrance of the tent of meeting; and Aaron’s sons, the priests, shall throw the blood on the altar all around. 3 And he shall offer from the sacrifice of peace offering an offering made by fire to Shema, the fat that covers the internal organs, and all the fat that is on the internal organs, 4 and he shall remove the two kidneys and the fat on them near the lower back, and the appendage on the liver along with the kidneys. 5 And Aaron’s sons shall burn it on the altar with the burned offering, which is on the wood that is on the fire, which is on the altar; it is an offering made by fire of a pleasing aroma to Shema.

6 And if his offering for a sacrifice of the peace offering to Shema is of the flock, male and female, he shall offer it without blemish. 7 If he offers a lamb for his offering, then he shall offer it in the presence of Shema; 8 and he shall lay his hand on the head of his offering, and kill it in front of the tent of meeting. And Aaron’s sons shall throw the blood on the altar all around. 9 And he shall offer from the sacrifice of peace offering an offering made by fire to Shema; its fat, the whole fat tail, which he shall remove close to the backbone; the fat that covers the internal organs, and all the fat that is on the internal organs, 10 and he shall remove the two kidneys, and the fat on them near the lower back, and the appendage on the liver along with the kidneys. 11 And the priest shall burn the food on the altar of the offering made by fire to Shema.

12 And if his offering is a goat, then he shall offer it in the presence of Shema, 13 and he shall lay his hand on its head, and kill it in front of the tent of meeting; and the sons of Aaron, the priests, shall throw its blood on the altar all around. 14 And he shall offer from it his offering, an offering made by fire to Shema, the fat that covers the internal organs, and all the fat that is on the internal organs, 15 and he shall remove the two kidneys and the fat on them near the lower back, and the appendage on the liver along with the kidneys. 16 And the priest shall burn them on the altar; it is the food of the offering made by fire, for a pleasing aroma to Shema. All the fat is Shema’s. 17 [It shall be] a statute forever throughout your generations, in all your homes, that you shall eat neither fat nor blood.’”

Chapter 4

1 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: 2 “Speak to the children of Israel, saying, ‘If anyone sins unintentionally regarding any of the commandments of Shema, which are not to be done, and does any one of them, 3 if the anointed priest sins so as to bring guilt on the people, then let him offer for the sin he has committed, a young bull without blemish to Shema for a sin offering. 4 And he shall bring the bull to the entrance of the tent of meeting in the presence of Shema; and he shall lay his hand on the head of the bull, and kill the bull in the presence of Shema. 5 And the anointed priest, who was consecrated, shall take some of the blood of the bull, and bring it to the tent of meeting; 6 and the priest shall dip his finger in the blood and sprinkle some of the blood seven times with his finger in the presence of Shema toward the veil of the sanctuary. 7 And the priest shall put some of the blood on the horns of the altar of sweet incense in the presence of Shema, which is in the tent of meeting, and he shall pour out all the blood at the base of the altar of burned offering, which is at the entrance of the tent of meeting. 8 And he shall remove all the fat from the bull of the sin offering, the fat that covers the internal organs and all the fat that is on the internal organs, 9 and he shall remove the two kidneys and the fat on them near the lower back, and the appendage on the liver along with the kidneys, 10 as it is taken off from the ox of the sacrifice of peace offerings, and the priest shall burn them on the altar of burned offering. 11 And the skin of the bull and all its flesh, with its head, and with its legs, and its internal organs, and its dung, 12 they shall carry the whole bull outside the camp to a clean place, to the ash heap, and they shall burn it on the wood with fire; on the ash heap it shall be burned.

13 And if the whole congregation of Israel goes wrong, and the assembly is unaware of it, and they have done any of the things which Shema has commanded not to be done, and are guilty; 14 when the sin which they have sinned is known, then the assembly shall offer a young bull without blemish for a sin offering, and bring it in front of the tent of meeting. 15 And the elders of the congregation shall lay their hands on the head of the bull in the presence of Shema, and the bull shall be killed in the presence of Shema. 16 And the anointed priest shall bring some of the blood of the bull to the tent of meeting, 17 and the priest shall dip his finger in the blood and sprinkle some of the blood seven times in the presence of Shema in front of the veil of the sanctuary. 18 And the priest shall put some of the blood on the horns of the altar of sweet incense which is in the presence of Shema that is in the tent of meeting; and he shall pour out all the blood at the base of the altar of burned offering, which is at the entrance of the tent of meeting. 19 And he shall remove all its fat and burn it on the altar. 20 He shall do this with the bull; as he did with the bull of the sin offering, that is how it shall be done with it; and the priest shall make atonement for them, and they shall be forgiven. 21 And he shall carry the bull outside the camp, and burn it as he burned the first bull; it is the sin offering for the assembly.

22 When a leader sins and unintentionally does any one of all the things which Shema his God has commanded not to be done, and is guilty, 23 or the sin he has committed, is made known to him, he shall bring for his offering a goat, a male without blemish, 24 and he shall lay his hand on the head of the goat, and kill it in the place where they kill the burned offering in the presence of Shema; it is a sin offering. 25 And the priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger, and put it on the horns of the altar of burned offering, and he shall pour out its blood at the base of the altar of burned offering. 26 And he shall burn all its fat on the altar, as the fat of the sacrifice of peace offerings; and the priest shall make atonement for him for his sin, and he shall be forgiven.

27 And if any one of the common people sins unintentionally, in doing any of all the commandments of Shema which are not to be done, and is guilty, 28 or his sin, which he has sinned about, is made known to him, he shall bring for his offering a goat, a female without blemish, for his sin which he has sinned. 29 And he shall lay his hand on the head of the sin offering, and kill the sin offering in the place where they kill the burned offering. 30 And the priest shall take some of its blood with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burned offering, and he shall pour out all its blood at the base of the altar of burned offering. 31 And he shall remove all its fat, as he takes away the fat from the sacrifice of peace offerings, and the priest shall burn it on the altar for a pleasing aroma to Shema; and the priest shall make atonement for him, and he shall be forgiven.

32 And if he brings a lamb as his offering for a sin offering, he shall bring a female without blemish. 33 And he shall lay his hand on the head of the sin offering, and kill it for a sin offering in the place where they kill the burned offering. 34 And the priest shall take some of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and put it on the horns of the altar of burned offering, and he shall pour out all its blood at the base of the altar of burned offering, 35 and he shall remove all its fat, as he takes away the fat of the lamb of the sacrifice of peace offerings, and the priest shall burn [them] on the altar, on the offerings of Shema made by fire; and the priest shall make atonement for him for the sin that he has sinned, and he shall be forgiven.

Chapter 5

1 And if anyone sins, in that he hears a demand to testify under oath, and he is a witness, whether he has seen or known, if he does not report it, then he shall bear responsibility for his wrongdoing. 2 Or if anyone touches any unclean thing, whether the carcass of an unclean animal or the carcass of unclean cattle or the carcass of unclean swarming creatures, and it is hidden from him and he is unclean, then he shall be guilty. 3 Or if he touches the human uncleanness, of whatever sort the uncleanness may be with which one becomes unclean, and it is hidden from him, when he knows of it, then he shall be guilty. 4 Or if anyone makes a spoken oath to do evil or to do good, whatever it is that a man says under oath, and it is hidden from him, when he knows of it, then he shall be guilty in one of these things. 5 And when he sins in one of these things, he shall confess the sin he has committed, 6 and he shall bring his guilt offering to Shema for his sin which he has sinned, a female from the flock, a lamb or a goat, for a sin offering. And the priest shall make atonement for him for his sin which he has sinned, and he shall be forgiven.

7 And if he cannot afford a lamb, then he shall bring with his guilt offering for what he has sinned two turtledoves or two young pigeons to Shema, one for a sin offering and the other for a burned offering. 8 And he shall bring them to the priest, who shall offer the one that is for the sin offering first, and the priest shall wring off its head from its neck, but shall not divide it completely, 9 and he shall sprinkle some of the blood of the sin offering on the side of the altar, and the rest of the blood shall be drained out at the base of the altar; it is a sin offering. 10 And he shall offer the second for a burned offering according to the rule. And the priest shall make atonement for him for his sin which he has sinned, and he shall be forgiven.

11 But if he cannot afford two turtledoves or two young pigeons, then he shall bring, as his offering for the sin, which he has committed, the tenth part of an ephah of fine flour for a sin offering. He shall pour no oil on it and shall put no frankincense on it, for it is a sin offering. 12 And he shall bring it to the priest, and [the priest] shall take a handful of it as the memorial of it, and burn it on the altar, on the offerings of Shema made by fire; it is a sin offering. 13 And the priest shall make atonement for the sin which he has sinned in any of these things, and he shall be forgiven. And it shall be the priest’s, as the grain offering.’”

14 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: 15 “If anyone commits an offense and sins unintentionally in the holy things of Shema, then he shall bring his guilt offering to Shema, a ram without blemish out of the flock, according to the valuation in silver by shekels, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, for a guilt offering. 16 And he shall make restitution for what he has done wrong in the holy thing, and shall add the fifth part to it and give it to the priest; and the priest shall make atonement for him with the ram of the guilt offering, and he shall be forgiven. 17 And if anyone sins, doing any of the things which Shema has commanded not to be done, though he did not know it, yet he is guilty and shall bear responsibility for his wrongdoing. 18 And he shall bring a ram without blemish out of the flock, according to the valuation for a guilt offering, to the priest, and the priest shall make atonement for him concerning the thing in which he went wrong unintentionally and did not know, and he shall be forgiven. 19 It is a guilt offering; he is certainly guilty in the presence of Shema.”

20 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: 21 “If anyone sins and commits an offense against Shema and deceives with his neighbor over a deposit or security, or through robbery, or has oppressed his neighbor, 22 or has found what was lost and lied about it, and sworn falsely about any of these things in which a man may sin, 23 then if he has sinned and is guilty, he shall return what he took by robbery, or the thing obtained by oppression, or the deposit which he entrusted [with him], or the lost thing which he found, 24 or anything about which he has sworn falsely; he shall return it in full, and shall add the fifth part more to it, and give it to whom it belongs, on the day he is found guilty. 25 And he shall bring his guilt offering to Shema, a ram without blemish out of the flock, according to the valuation, for a guilt offering. 26 And the priest shall make atonement for him in the presence of Shema, and he shall be forgiven for whatever he did so as to become guilty.”

Chapter 6

1 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: 2 “Command Aaron and his sons, saying, ‘This is the law of the burned offering: The burned offering shall be on the hearth on the altar all night until morning, and the fire of the altar shall be kept burning on it. 3 And the priest shall put on linen garments, and he shall put linen undergarments on his body, and he shall take up the ashes left after the fire has consumed the burned offering on the altar, and he shall put them beside the altar. 4 And he shall take off his garments, and put on other garments, and carry the ashes outside the camp to a clean place. 5 And the fire on the altar shall be kept burning on it; it shall not go out; and the priest shall burn wood on it every morning, and he shall lay the burned offering in order on it, and shall burn on it the fat of peace offerings. 6 A continuous fire shall be kept burning on the altar; it shall not go out.

7 And this is the law of the grain offering: The sons of Aaron shall offer it in the presence of Shema in front of the altar. 8 And one shall take up from it his handful of the fine flour of the grain offering and of its oil and all the frankincense which is on the grain offering, and shall burn [it] on the altar, an offering made by fire of a pleasing aroma, as its memorial to Shema. 9 And Aaron and his sons shall eat the remainder; it shall be eaten without leaven in a holy place; they shall eat it in the courtyard of the tent of meeting. 10 It shall not be baked with leaven. I have given it as their portion of Shema’s offerings made by fire; it is most holy, as the sin offering and as the guilt offering. 11 Every male among the children of Aaron shall eat of it, as his portion forever throughout your generations, from the offerings of Shema made by fire; whoever touches them shall become holy.’”

12 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: 13 “This is the offering of Aaron and of his sons, which they shall offer to Shema on the day when he is anointed: the tenth part of an ephah of fine flour for a grain offering continually, half of it in the morning and half of it at twilight. 14 It shall be made with oil on the baking pan; when it is soaked, you shall bring it in; you shall offer the grain offering in baked pieces for a pleasing aroma to Shema. 15 The anointed priest, who shall succeed him from among his sons, shall offer it as a permanent requirement; it shall be completely burned to Shema. 16 And every grain offering of the priest shall be completely burned; it shall not be eaten.”

17 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: 18 “Speak to Aaron and to his sons, saying, ‘This is the law of the sin offering: You shall kill the sin offering in the place where you kill the burned offering, in the presence of Shema; it is most holy. 19 The priest who offers it for sin shall eat it; in a holy place it shall be eaten, in the courtyard of the tent of meeting. 20 Whatever touches its flesh shall be holy; and when one sprinkles some of its blood on any garment, what he sprinkled shall be washed in a holy place. 21 And the clay vessel in which it is boiled shall be broken; and if it is boiled in a copper vessel, it shall be scrubbed and rinsed in water. 22 Every male among the priests shall eat of it; it is most holy. 23 And no sin offering, from which any of the blood comes into the tent of meeting to make atonement in the holy place, shall be eaten; it shall be burned with fire.

Chapter 7

1 And this is the law of the guilt offering; it is most holy. 2 They shall kill the guilt offering in the place where they kill the burned offering, and they shall sprinkle its blood on the altar all around. 3 And he shall offer all its fat: the fat tail, and the fat that covers the internal organs, and all the fat that is on the internal organs; 4 and he shall remove the two kidneys, and the fat on them near the lower back, and the appendage on the liver along with the kidneys. 5 And the priest shall burn them on the altar for an offering made by fire to Shema; it is a guilt offering. 6 Every male among the priests shall eat of it; it shall be eaten in a holy place; it is most holy. 7 The guilt offering is like the sin offering; there is one law for them. The priest who makes atonement with it shall have it. 8 And the priest who offers any man’s burned offering, that priest shall keep the skin of the burned offering which they shall offer. 9 And every grain offering that is baked in the oven, and all that is cooked in the stewing-pan, and on the baking-pan, shall belong to the priest who offers it. 10 And all the sons of Aaron shall have an equal share of every grain offering, mixed with oil or dry.

11 And this is the law of the sacrifice of peace offerings, which they shall offer to Shema. 12 If he offers it for a thanksgiving, then he shall offer with the sacrifice of thanksgiving unleavened cakes mixed with oil, and unleavened wafers spread with oil, and cakes mixed with oil, of fine flour soaked. 13 He shall offer his gift with cakes of leavened bread with the sacrifice of his peace offerings for thanksgiving. 14 And of it he shall offer one out of each gift for a raised offering to Shema; it shall belong to the priest that sprinkles the blood of the peace offerings. 15 And the meat of the sacrifice of his peace offerings for thanksgiving shall be eaten on the day of his offering; he shall not leave any of it until the morning. 16 But if the sacrifice of his gift is a vow or a freewill offering, it shall be eaten on the day that he offers his sacrifice, and on the next day what remains of it shall be eaten, 17 but what remains of the meat of the sacrifice on the third day shall be burned with fire. 18 And if any of the meat of the sacrifice of his peace offerings is indeed eaten on the third day, it shall not be accepted, nor shall it be credited to him; it shall be an abomination, and the person who eats it shall bear responsibility for his wrongdoing. 19 And the meat that touches any unclean thing shall not be eaten; the meat shall be burned with fire. All who are clean shall eat meat, 20 but the person who eats the meat of the sacrifice of peace offerings that belongs to Shema, while having his uncleanness on him, that person shall be cut off from his people. 21 And if anyone touches any unclean thing, the human uncleanness or an unclean animal or any unclean swarming creature, and eat of the meat of the sacrifice of peace offerings that belongs to Shema, that person shall be cut off from his people.’”

22 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: 23 “Speak to the children of Israel, saying, ‘you shall eat no fat of ox, or sheep, or goat. 24 And the fat of an animal that dies on its own, and the fat of an animal torn by wild animals, may be used for any task, but you shall by no means eat of it. 25 For whoever eats the fat of the animal, of which men offer an offering made by fire to Shema, the person who eats it shall be cut off from his people. 26 And you shall eat no blood, either of bird or of animal, in any of your homes. 27 And any person who eats any blood, that person shall be cut off from his people.’”

28 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: 29 ”And you shall speak to the children of Israel, saying, ‘Anyone who offers the sacrifice of his peace offerings to Shema shall bring his gift to Shema out of the sacrifice of his peace offerings; 30 his own hands shall bring the fire offerings of Shema made by fire; he shall bring the fat with the breast, so that the breast may be waved for a wave offering in the presence of Shema. 31 And the priest shall burn the fat on the altar, but the breast shall be Aaron’s and his sons’. 32 And you shall give the right thigh to the priest for a raised offering out of the sacrifices of your peace offerings. 33 The son of Aaron who offers the blood and fat of the peace offerings shall have the right thigh as his portion. 34 For I have taken the breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the raised offering from the children of Israel, out of the sacrifices of their peace offerings, and have given them to Aaron the priest and to his sons as their due forever from the children of Israel. 35 This is the portion assigned at anointing of Aaron, and the portion assigned at anointing of his sons, out of the offerings of Shema made by fire, on the day when they presented them to serve Shema as priests, 36 which Shema commanded to be given to them by the children of Israel, on the day that he anointed them. It is a statute forever throughout their generations.’” 37 This is the law of the burned offering, and of the grain offering, and of the sin offering, and of the guilt offering, and of the consecration, and of the sacrifice of peace offerings, 38 which Shema commanded Moses on Mount Sinai, on the day that he commanded the children of Israel to offer their gifts to Shema, in the wilderness of Sinai.

Chapter 8

1 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: 2 “Take Aaron and his sons with him, and the garments, and the anointing oil, and the bull of the sin offering, and the two rams, and the basket of unleavened bread, 3 and assemble all the congregation at the entrance of the tent of meeting.” 4 And Moses did as Shema commanded him, and the congregation was assembled at the entrance of the tent of meeting. 5 And Moses said to the congregation: “This is what Shema has commanded to be done.” 6 And Moses brought Aaron and his sons, and washed them with water. 7 And he put the tunic on him, and fastened the sash around him, and clothed him with the robe, and put the ephod on him, and he fastened the skillfully woven band of the ephod around him, and secured it to him with it. 8 And he placed the breastplate on him, and on the breastplate he put the Urim and the Thummim. 9 And he set the turban on his head, and on the turban, in front, he set the golden plate, the holy crown, as Shema commanded Moses.

10 And Moses took the anointing oil, and anointed the tabernacle and all that was in it, and made them holy. 11 And he sprinkled some of it on the altar seven times, and anointed the altar and all its vessels, and the basin and its base, to make them holy. 12 And he poured some of the anointing oil on Aaron’s head, and anointed him, to make him holy. 13 And Moses brought Aaron’s sons, and clothed them with tunics, and fastened sashes around them, and tied caps on them, as Shema commanded Moses.

14 And he brought the bull of the sin offering, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the bull of the sin offering, 15 and he killed it. And Moses took the blood, and put it on the horns of the altar all around with his finger, and purified the altar, and poured out the blood at the base of the altar, and made holy it, to make atonement for it. 16 And he took all the fat that was on the internal organs, and the appendage of the liver, and the two kidneys, and their fat; and Moses burned it on the altar. 17 But he burned the bull, and its skin, and its meat, and its dung with fire outside the camp, as Shema commanded Moses.

18 And he brought the ram of the burned offering, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram, 19 and he killed it. And Moses sprinkled the blood on the altar all around. 20 And he cut the ram into its pieces, and Moses burned the head, and the pieces, and the fat. 21 And he washed the internal organs and the legs with water, and Moses burned the whole ram on the altar; it was a burned offering for a pleasing aroma; it was an offering made by fire to Shema, as Shema commanded Moses.

22 And he presented the other ram, the ram of consecration, and Aaron and his sons laid their hands on the head of the ram, 23 and he killed it. And Moses took some of its blood, and put it on the tip of Aaron’s right ear, and on the thumb of his right hand, and on the big toe of his right foot. 24 And he brought Aaron’s sons, and Moses put some of the blood on the tip of their right ear, and on the thumb of their right hand, and on the big toe of their right foot, and Moses sprinkled the blood on the altar all around. 25 And he took the fat, the fat tail, and all the fat that was on the internal organs, and the appendage of the liver, and the two kidneys, and their fats, and the right thigh. 26 And out of the basket of unleavened bread that was in the presence of Shema, he took one unleavened cake, and one cake of oiled bread, and one wafer, and placed them on the fat, and on the right thigh. 27 And he put all these on the hands of Aaron, and on the hands of his sons, and waved them as a wave offering in the presence of Shema. 28 And Moses took them from their hands, and burned them on the altar, on the burned offering; they were a consecration for a pleasing aroma, an offering made by fire to Shema.

29 And Moses took the breast, and waved it as a wave offering in the presence of Shema; it was Moses’s portion of the ram of consecration, as Shema commanded Moses. 30 And Moses took some of the anointing oil, and of the blood which was on the altar, and sprinkled it on Aaron, and on his garments, and on his sons, and on his sons’ garments with him, and made holy Aaron, and his garments, and his sons, and his sons’ garments with him.

31 And Moses said to Aaron and to his sons: “Boil the meat at the entrance of the tent of meeting in a holy place, and there eat it and the bread that is in the basket of consecration, as I commanded, saying, ‘Aaron and his sons shall eat it.’ 32 And you shall burn what remains of the meat and of the bread with fire. 33 And you shall not go out from the entrance of the tent of meeting seven days, until the days of your consecration are completed, for he shall consecrate you seven days. 34 Shema has commanded that what was done today be done, to make atonement for you. 35 And you shall stay at the entrance of the tent of meeting day and night for seven days, and obey Shema’s instructions, so that you do not die, for so I commanded.” 36 And Aaron and his sons did all the things which Shema commanded through Moses.

Chapter 9

1 And on the eighth day Moses called Aaron and his sons, and the elders of Israel, 2 and he said to Aaron: “Take a calf of the herd for a sin offering, and a ram for a burned offering, both without blemish, and offer them in the presence of Shema. 3 And you shall speak to the elders of Israel, saying, ‘Take a male goat for a sin offering, and a calf and a lamb, both a year old without blemish, for a burned offering, 4 and an ox and a ram for peace offerings, to sacrifice in the presence of Shema, and a grain offering mixed with oil; for today Shema appears to you.’” 5 And they brought what Moses commanded in front of the tent of meeting; and all the congregation came near and stood in the presence of Shema. 6 And Moses said: “This is what Shema commanded you to do; and the glory of Shema shall appear to you.”

7 And Moses said to Aaron: “Come near to the altar, and offer your sin offering, and your burned offering, and make atonement for yourself and for the people; and offer the offering of the people, and make atonement for them, as Shema commanded.” 8 So Aaron came near to the altar, and killed the calf of the sin offering, which was for himself. 9 And the sons of Aaron presented the blood to him; and he dipped his finger in the blood, and put it on the horns of the altar, and poured out the blood at the base of the altar, 10 but he burned the fat, and the kidneys, and the appendage from the liver of the sin offering on the altar, as Shema commanded Moses. 11 And he burned the meat and the skin with fire outside the camp.

12 And he killed the burned offering; and Aaron’s sons brought him the blood, and he sprinkled it on the altar all around. 13 And they brought the burned offering to him, piece by piece, and the head; and he burned them on the altar. 14 And he washed the internal organs and the legs, and burned them on the burned offering on the altar. 15 And he presented the people’s offering, and took the goat of the sin offering, which was for the people, and killed it, and offered it for sin, like the first. 16 And he presented the burned offering, and offered it according to the rule. 17 And he presented the grain offering, and filled his hands from it, and burned it on the altar, besides the burned offering of the morning. 18 He also killed the ox and the ram, the sacrifice of peace offerings, which was for the people; and Aaron’s sons brought him the blood, which he sprinkled on the altar all around, 19 and the fat of the ox and of the ram, the fat tail, and what covers the internal organs, and the kidneys, and the appendage of the liver; 20 and he put the fat on the breasts, and he burned the fat on the altar, 21 and Aaron waved the breasts and the right thigh as a wave offering in the presence of Shema, as Shema commanded Moses.

22 And Aaron raised his hand toward the people, and blessed them; and he came down from offering the sin offering, and the burned offering, and the peace offerings. 23 And Moses and Aaron went into the tent of meeting, and came out, and blessed the people; and the glory of Shema appeared to all the people. 24 And fire came out from the presence of Shema, and consumed the burned offering and the fat on the altar; and when all the people saw it, they shouted, and fell on their faces.

Chapter 10

1 And Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his incense burner, and put fire in them, and laid incense on them, and offered unauthorized fire in the presence of Shema, which he had not commanded them. 2 And fire came out from the presence of Shema, and devoured them, and they died in the presence of Shema.

3 Then Moses said to Aaron: “This is what Shema spoke, saying, ‘I will be treated as holy by the one who is near to me, and I will be glorified in front of all the people.’” And Aaron was silent. 4 And Moses called Mishael and Elizaphan, the sons of Uzziel the uncle of Aaron, and said to them: “Come near, carry your brothers from in front of the sanctuary out of the camp.” 5 So they came near, and carried them in their tunics out of the camp, as Moses had said.

6 And Moses said to Aaron and to Eleazar and to Ithamar, his sons: “Do not let the hair of your heads go loose, and do not tear your clothes, so that you do not die and anger does not come on all the congregation; but let your brothers, the whole house of Israel, mourn the burning which Shema has started. 7 And you shall not go out from the entrance of the tent of meeting, so that you do not die; for the anointing oil of Shema is on you.” And they did according to the word of Moses.

8 And Shema spoke to Aaron, saying: 9 “You shall not drink wine nor other alcoholic drink, you, nor your sons with you, when you go into the tent of meeting, so that you do not die; [it shall be] a statute forever throughout your generations: 10 [You are] to distinguish between the holy and the common, and between the unclean and the clean, 11 and so that you may teach the children of Israel all the statutes which Shema has spoken to them by Moses.”

12 And Moses spoke to Aaron, and to Eleazar, and to Ithamar, his sons that were left: “Take the grain offering that remains of the offerings of Shema made by fire, and eat it without leaven beside the altar; for it is most holy; 13 and you shall eat it in a holy place, because it is your portion and your sons’ portion, of the offerings of Shema made by fire; for that is what I commanded. 14 And the breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the raised offering you shall eat in a clean place, you and your sons and your daughters with you; for they are given as your portion and your sons’ portion, out of the sacrifices of the peace offerings of the children of Israel. 15 They shall bring the thigh of the raised offering and the breast of the wave offering with the offerings made by fire of the fat, to wave it for a wave offering in the presence of Shema, and it shall be yours, and your sons’, and your daughters with you, as a portion forever, as Shema has commanded.”

16 And Moses carefully looked for the goat of the sin offering, and look, it has been burned. And he was angry with Eleazar and with Ithamar, the sons of Aaron that were left, saying: 17 “Why have you not eaten the sin offering in the place of the sanctuary, for it is most holy, and it has been given to you to bear responsibility for the wrongdoing of the congregation, to make atonement for them in the presence of Shema? 18 Look, its blood was not brought into the inner part of the sanctuary. You certainly ought to have eaten it in the sanctuary, as I commanded.” 19 And Aaron spoke to Moses: “Look, today they have offered their sin offering and their burned offering in the presence of Shema; and such things as these have happened to me. And if I had eaten the sin offering today, would it have pleased Shema?” 20 And Moses heard that, and it pleased him.

Chapter 11

1 And Shema spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying to them, 2 “Speak to the children of Israel, saying, ‘These are the living things which you may eat among all the animals that are on the earth. 3 You may eat any animal that parts the hoof, and splits it into two hooves, and chews cud. 4 But you shall not eat the following animals that chew the cud or part the hoof: The camel, because it chews the cud but does not part the hoof; it is unclean to you. 5 And the rock hyrax, because it chews cud but does not part the hoof; it is unclean to you. 6 And the hare, because it chews cud but does not part the hoof; it is unclean to you. 7 And the pig, because it parts the hoof and has a split hoof but does not chew cud; it is unclean to you. 8 You shall not eat their meat, and you shall not touch their carcasses; they are unclean to you.

9 And you may eat these from all that are in the waters: Whatever has fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, you may eat them. 10 And all creatures without fins and scales in the waters, in the seas, and in the rivers, from all the swarming creatures in the waters, and from all the living creatures in the waters, are an abomination to you, 11 and they shall be an abomination to you; you shall not eat of their meat, and you shall regard their carcasses as an abomination. 12 And whatever does not have fins or scales in the waters, that is an abomination to you.

13 And you shall regard these birds as an abomination; you shall not eat; they are an abomination: The eagle, and the bearded vulture, and the osprey, 14 and the kite, and the falcon according to its kind, 15 and every raven according to its kind, 16 and the ostrich, and the nighthawk, and the seagull according to its kind, and the hawk, 17 and the little owl, and the cormorant, and the great owl, 18 and the horned owl, and the pelican, and the vulture, 19 and the stork, and the heron according to its kind, and the hoopoe, and the bat. 20 And all winged swarming creatures that go on all fours are an abomination to you.

21 Yet you may eat these from all winged swarming creatures that go on all fours, which have legs above their feet, for leaping on the earth. 22 These you may eat: The locust according to its kind, and the bald locust according to its kind, and the cricket according to its kind, and the grasshopper according to its kind. 23 But all winged swarming creatures, which have four feet, are an abomination to you.

24 And by these you shall become unclean; whoever touches their carcass shall be unclean until the evening. 25 And whoever carries any part of their carcass shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water and be unclean until the evening. 26 Every animal which parts the hoof and does not split it completely or does not chew cud is unclean to you; everyone that touches them shall be unclean. 27 And whatever goes on its paws, among all animals that go on all fours, they are unclean to you; whoever touches their carcass shall be unclean until the evening. 28 And he who carries any part of their carcass shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the evening; they are unclean to you.

29 And these are unclean to you among the swarming creatures that swarm on the earth: The weasel, and the mouse, and the great lizard according to its kind, 30 and the gecko, and the land crocodile, and the lizard, and the sand lizard, and the chameleon. 31 Of all the swarming creatures, these are unclean to you; whoever touches them when they are dead shall be unclean until the evening. 32 And anything on which any of them falls when they are dead shall be unclean, whether a wooden vessel or clothing or a skin or a sack; any object used for work shall be immersed in water, and it shall be unclean until the evening; then it shall be clean. 33 And if any of them falls into a clay vessel, whatever is in it shall be unclean, and you shall break it. 34 Any food in it that could be eaten, on which water may come, shall be unclean, and any drink that could be drunk from any such vessel shall be unclean. 35 And everything on which any part of their carcass falls shall be unclean; whether oven or stove, they shall be broken; they are unclean and shall be unclean to you. 36 Nevertheless, a spring of water and a cistern holding water shall be clean, but whoever touches their carcass shall be unclean. 37 And if any part of their carcass falls on seed intended for sowing, it is clean. 38 But if anyone puts water on the seed, and any part of their carcass falls on it, it is unclean to you.

39 And if any animal which you may eat dies, whoever touches its carcass shall be unclean until the evening. 40 And anyone that skins its carcass shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the evening, and whoever carries its carcass shall wash his clothes, and be unclean until the evening. 41 And every swarming creature that swarms on the earth is an abomination; it shall not be eaten. 42 You shall not eat any swarming creature that swarms on the earth, whether it moves on its belly, goes on all fours, or has many feet, for they are an abomination. 43 You shall not make yourselves abominable with any swarming creature that swarms, you shall not make yourselves unclean with them and become defiled by them. 44 For I am Shema your God. Consecrate yourselves therefore, and be holy, for I am holy. Neither shall you defile yourselves with any kind of swarming creature that moves on the earth. 45 For I am Shema your God who brought you up from the land of Egypt to be your God. You shall therefore be holy, for I am holy.’” 46 This is the law of the animal, and of the bird, and of every living creature that moves in the waters, of every creature that creeps on the earth, 47 to make a distinction between the unclean and the clean and between the living thing that may be eaten and the living thing that may not be eaten.

Chapter 12

1 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: 2 “Speak to the children of Israel, saying, ‘If a woman conceives, and gives birth to a male child, then she shall be unclean seven days; as in the days of the impurity of her menstrual period, she shall be unclean. 3 And on the eighth day [one] shall circumcise the flesh of his foreskin. 4 And she shall continue in the blood of her purification thirty-three days; she shall not touch any holy thing, nor come into the sanctuary, until the days of her purification are completed. 5 But if she gives birth to a female child, then she shall be unclean two weeks, as in her impurity; and she shall continue in the blood of her purification sixty-six days. 6 And when the days of her purification are completed, whether for a son or for a daughter, she shall bring a lamb a year old for a burned offering, and a young pigeon or a turtledove for a sin offering, to the entrance of the tent of meeting to the priest. 7 And he shall offer it in the presence of Shema, and the priest shall make atonement for her; and she shall be cleansed from the source of her blood. This is the law for a woman who gives birth to a child, male and female. 8 And if she cannot afford a lamb, then she shall take two turtledoves or two young pigeons, one for a sin offering and one for a burnt offering, and the priest shall make atonement for her, and she shall be clean.’”

Chapter 13

1 And Shema spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying: 2 “When a man has on his skin a swelling or a scab or a bright spot, and it becomes a leprous disease on his skin, then he shall be brought to Aaron the priest or to one of his sons the priests. 3 And the priest shall look at the disease on the skin of the body. And if the hair in the disease has turned white and the appearance of the disease is deeper than his skin, it is a leprous disease; and the priest shall look and pronounce him unclean. 4 And if the bright spot is white on his skin and its appearance is not deeper than the skin, and its hair has not turned white, then the priest shall isolate the one who has the disease for seven days. 5 And the priest shall look on the seventh day, and, look, if he sees that the disease has stopped developing and the disease has not spread in the skin, then the priest shall isolate him for another seven days. 6 And the priest shall look again on the seventh day, and, look, if the disease is faded and the disease has not spread in the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him clean; it is a scab. And he shall wash his clothes and be clean. 7 But if the scab spreads in the skin, after he has shown himself to the priest for his cleansing, he shall show himself to the priest again. 8 And the priest shall look, and, look, if the scab has spread in the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean; it is leprosy.

9 And when a man has a leprous disease, he shall be brought to the priest, 10 and the priest shall look, and, look, if there is a white swelling in the skin and it has turned the hair white, and there is raw flesh in the swelling, 11 it is a chronic leprous disease in his skin, and the priest shall pronounce him unclean. He shall not isolate him, for he is unclean. 12 And if the leprosy breaks out in the skin, and the leprosy covers all the skin of the person who has the disease from his head to his feet, as far as the priest can see, 13 then the priest shall look, and, look, if the leprosy has covered his whole body, he shall pronounce him clean of the disease; it has all turned white; he is clean. 14 But when raw flesh appears on him, he shall be unclean. 15 And the priest shall look at the raw flesh and pronounce him unclean. The raw flesh is unclean; it is leprosy. 16 Or if the raw flesh changes back to white, then he shall come to the priest, 17 and the priest shall look, and, look, if the disease has turned white, then the priest shall pronounce the person with the disease clean; he is clean.

18 And when the body has a boil in it, and it heals, 19 and in the place of the boil there is a white swelling or a reddish-white bright spot, then it shall be shown to the priest, 20 and the priest shall look, and, look, if its appearance is deeper than the skin and its hair has turned white, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean. It is a leprous disease; it has broken out in the boil. 21 And if the priest looks, and, look, there is no white hair in it and it is not deeper than the skin, but is faded, then the priest shall isolate him for seven days. 22 If it spreads in the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean; it is a disease. 23 But if the bright spot stays in its place and does not spread, it is the scar of the boil, and the priest shall pronounce him clean.

24 Or when the body has a burn from fire on its skin and the raw flesh of the burn becomes a bright spot, reddish-white or white, 25 then the priest shall look at it, and, look, if the hair in the bright spot has turned white and its appearance is deeper than the skin, it is leprosy. It has broken out in the burn, and the priest shall pronounce him unclean; it is a leprous disease. 26 But if the priest looks, and, look, there is no white hair in the bright spot and it is not deeper than the skin, but is faded, then the priest shall isolate him for seven days, 27 and the priest shall look on the seventh day. If it has spread in the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean; it is a leprous disease. 28 And if the bright spot stays in its place and has not spread in the skin, but is faded, it is the swelling of the burn, and the priest shall pronounce him clean, for it is the scar of the burn.

29 And when a man or woman has a disease on the head or on the beard, 30 then the priest shall look at the disease, and, look, if its appearance is deeper than the skin, and there is thin yellow hair in it, then the priest shall pronounce him unclean. It is an itch; it is leprosy of the head or of the beard. 31 And if the priest looks at the disease of the itch, and, look, its appearance is not deeper than the skin, and there is no black hair in it, then the priest shall isolate the person who has the disease of the itch for seven days, 32 and on the seventh day the priest shall look at the itch; and, look, if the itch has not spread, and there is no yellow hair in it, and the appearance of the itch is not deeper than the skin, 33 then he shall shave himself, but he shall not shave the area with the itch; and the priest shall isolate the person who has the itch for another seven days. 34 And on the seventh day the priest shall look at the itch, and, look, if the itch has not spread in the skin and its appearance is not deeper than the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him clean. And he shall wash his clothes and be clean. 35 But if the itch spreads in the skin after his cleansing, 36 then the priest shall look, and, look, if the itch has spread in the skin, the priest shall not look for the yellow hair; he is unclean. 37 But if he sees that the itch has stopped spreading and black hair has grown in it, the itch is healed; he is clean, and the priest shall pronounce him clean.

38 And when a man or a woman has bright spots on the skin of the body, white bright spots, 39 and the priest shall look, and, look, if the bright spots on their skin are dull white, it is a rash that has broken out in the skin; he is clean. 40 And if a man’s hair has fallen out from his head, he is bald, but he is clean. 41 And if his hair has fallen off from the front part of his head, he is bald at the forehead, [but] he is clean. 42 But if there is on his bald head or on his bald forehead a reddish-white disease, it is leprosy breaking out on his bald head or on his bald forehead. 43 Then the priest shall look at it, and, look, if the swelling of the disease is reddish-white on his bald head or on his bald forehead, like the appearance of leprosy in the skin of the body, 44 he is a man with leprosy, he is unclean; the priest shall surely pronounce him unclean; his disease is on his head. 45 And the person who has the leprous disease shall have torn clothes and the hair of his head shall be left loose, and he shall cover the upper lip and proclaim, ‘Unclean, unclean.’ 46 He shall be unclean for as long as he has the disease; he is unclean. He shall live alone; his home shall be outside the camp.

47 The garment that has the leprous disease, whether it is wool or linen; 48 whether it is in warp or weft of linen or of wool, whether in a skin or in anything made of skin, 49 if the disease is greenish or reddish in the garment or in the skin, or in the warp or in the weft, or in anything made of skin, it is a leprous disease and shall be shown to the priest. 50 And the priest shall look at the disease, and isolate what has the disease for seven days. 51 And he shall look at the disease on the seventh day. If the disease has spread in the garment, either in the warp or in the weft, or in the skin, whatever the skin is used for, the disease is a persistent leprous disease; it is unclean. 52 And he shall burn the garment, whether the disease is in the warp or in the weft, in wool or in linen, or in anything made of skin, for it is a persistent leprous disease; it shall be burned in the fire.

53 And if the priest looks, and, look, the disease has not spread in the garment, either in the warp or in the weft, or in anything of skin, 54 then the priest shall command that they wash the thing in which the disease is and he shall isolate it for seven days more. 55 And the priest shall look after the affected item has been washed, and, look, if the disease has not changed its color, and the disease has not spread, it is unclean; you shall burn it in the fire. It is an eaten-away patch, whether the bare area is on the back or in the front. 56 And if the priest looks, and, look, the disease is faded after they washed it, then they shall tear it out of the garment or out of the skin or out of the warp or out of the weft. 57 And if it appears again in the garment, either in the warp or in the weft or in anything of skin, it is breaking out; you shall burn what has the disease with fire. 58 And the garment, either the warp or the weft, or anything of skin that is washed, if the disease disappears from them, then he shall wash [it] a second time, and [it] shall be clean.” 59 This is the law of leprous disease in a garment of wool or linen, either in the warp or the weft, or anything of skin, to pronounce it clean or to pronounce it unclean.

Chapter 14

1 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: 2 “This shall be the law of the person with leprosy on the day of his cleansing. He shall be brought to the priest, 3 and the priest shall go out of the camp, and the priest shall look, and, look, if the leprous disease has healed in the person, 4 then the priest shall command and they shall take for the man who is to be cleansed two living clean birds, and cedar wood, and scarlet, and hyssop. 5 And the priest shall command and they shall kill one of the birds in a clay vessel over running water. 6 And he shall take the living bird along with the cedar wood and the scarlet and the hyssop, and shall dip them and the living bird in the blood of the bird that was killed over the running water. 7 And he shall sprinkle on the man who is to be cleansed of leprosy seven times, and shall pronounce him clean, and shall let the living bird go into the open field. 8 And he who is to be cleansed shall wash his clothes, and shave off all his hair, and bathe himself in water, and he shall be clean. And after that he shall come into the camp, but shall stay outside his tent seven days. 9 And it shall be on the seventh day that he shall shave all his hair off his head and his beard and his eyebrows; he shall shave off all his hair, and he shall wash his clothes, and he shall bathe his body in water, and he shall be clean.

10 And on the eighth day he shall take two male lambs without blemish a year old, and one ewe lamb a year old without blemish, and three tenth parts of an ephah of fine flour for a grain offering, mixed with oil, and one log of oil. 11 And the priest who cleanses him shall set the man who is to be cleansed and these things in the presence of Shema, at the entrance of the tent of meeting. 12 And the priest shall take one of the male lambs and offer it for a guilt offering, along with the log of oil, and wave them as a wave offering in the presence of Shema. 13 And he shall kill the male lamb in the place where they kill the sin offering and the burned offering, in the place of the sanctuary. For the guilt offering belongs to the priest just as the sin offering does; it is most holy.

14 And the priest shall take some of the blood of the guilt offering, and shall put it on the tip of the right ear of the man who is to be cleansed and on the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot. 15 And the priest shall take some oil from the log and pour it into the palm of his own left hand. 16 And the priest shall dip his right finger in the oil that is in his left hand and shall sprinkle some of the oil seven times in the presence of Shema. 17 And the priest shall put some of the rest of the oil in his hand on the tip of the right ear of the man who is to be cleansed and on the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot, on the blood of the guilt offering. 18 And he shall put the rest of the oil in the priest’s hand on the head of the man who is to be cleansed. And the priest shall make atonement for him in the presence of Shema. 19 And the priest shall offer the sin offering and make atonement for the man who is to be cleansed from his uncleanness. And afterward he shall kill the burned offering. 20 And the priest shall offer the burned offering and the grain offering on the altar in the presence of Shema. And the priest shall make atonement for him, and he shall be clean.

21 And if he is poor and cannot afford so much, then he shall take one male lamb for a guilt offering to be waved, to make atonement for him, and one tenth part of an ephah of fine flour mixed with oil for a grain offering, and a log of oil, 22 and two turtledoves or two young pigeons, such as he can afford. And one shall be a sin offering and the other a burned offering. 23 And on the eighth day he shall bring them for his cleansing to the priest, to the entrance of the tent of meeting, in the presence of Shema. 24 And the priest shall take the male lamb of the guilt offering and the log of oil, and shall wave them as a wave offering in the presence of Shema. 25 And he shall kill the male lamb of the guilt offering. And the priest shall take some of the blood of the guilt offering and put it on the tip of the right ear of the man who is to be cleansed, and on the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot.

26 And the priest shall pour some of the oil into the palm of his own left hand, 27 and the priest shall use his right finger to sprinkle some of the oil in his left hand seven times in the presence of Shema. 28 And the priest shall put some of the oil that is in his hand on the tip of the right ear of the man who is to be cleansed and on the thumb of his right hand and on the big toe of his right foot, in the place of the blood of the guilt offering. 29 And he shall put the rest of the oil in the priest’s hand on the head of the man who is to be cleansed, to make atonement for him in the presence of Shema. 30 And he shall offer one of the turtledoves or of the young pigeons, whichever he can afford, 31 whichever he can afford, one for a sin offering and the other for a burned offering, with the grain offering, and shall make atonement for the man who is to be cleansed in the presence of Shema.” 32 This is the law for the person with a leprous disease who cannot obtain what is needed for his cleansing.

33 And Shema spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying: 34 “When you come into the land of Canaan, which I give you to possess, and I put a leprous disease in a house of the land you possess, 35 then he who owns the house shall come and tell the priest, saying, ‘I seem to see something like a disease in the house.’ 36 And the priest shall command that they empty the house before the priest goes in to see the disease, so that the contents of the house are not made unclean. And afterward the priest shall go in to see the house. 37 And the priest shall look at the disease, and, look, if the disease is in the walls of the house with hollow streaks, greenish or reddish, and its appearance is deeper than the wall, 38 then the priest shall go out of the house to the door of the house and close the house for seven days. 39 And the priest shall come again on the seventh day, and shall look, and, look, if the disease has spread in the walls of the house, 40 then the priest shall command that they take out the stones in which the disease is and throw them into an unclean place outside the city. 41 And they shall scrape the house all around the inside, and they shall pour out the plaster that they scrape off outside the city into an unclean place. 42 And they shall take other stones and put them in the place of those stones, and they shall take other plaster, and they shall plaster the house.

43 And if the disease comes again and breaks out in the house after they had taken out the stones and after scraping the house and after plastering, 44 then the priest shall come in and look, and, look, if the disease broke out in the house, [it is] a persistent leprous disease in the house; it is unclean. 45 And they shall tear down the house, its stones and its timber and all the mortar of the house, and they shall carry [them] out of the city into an unclean place. 46 And anyone who goes into the house during the time it is closed shall be unclean until the evening. 47 And anyone who lies in the house shall wash his clothes, and anyone who skins in the house shall wash his clothes. 48 And if the priest comes in and look, and, look, the disease did not break out in the house, after the house was plastered, then the priest shall pronounce the house clean, because the disease is healed.

49 And they shall take two birds to cleanse the house, and cedar wood, and scarlet, and hyssop. 50 And they shall kill one of the birds in a clay vessel over running water. 51 And he shall take the cedar wood and the scarlet and the hyssop and the living bird, and dip them in the blood of the killed bird, and in the running water, and sprinkle on the house seven times. 52 And he shall cleanse the house with the blood of the bird, and with the running water, and with the living bird, and with the cedar wood, and with the scarlet, and with the hyssop, 53 but he shall let the living bird go out of the city into the open field. So he shall make atonement for the house; and it shall be clean.” 54 This is the law for every kind of leprous disease, and for an itch, 55 and for the leprosy of a garment, and for a house, 56 and for a swelling, and for a scab, and for a bright spot, 57 to teach when it is unclean and when it is clean; this is the law of leprosy.

Chapter 15

1 And Shema spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying: 2 “Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them, ‘When any man has a discharge from his body, his discharge is unclean. 3 And this shall be his uncleanness in his discharge, whether his body is wet with his discharge or his body is blocked by its discharge, he is unclean all the days of the discharge of his body, or [the days during which] his body is blocked by its discharge, this makes him unclean. 4 Every bed on which the man with the discharge lies shall be unclean, and everything on which he sits shall be unclean. 5 And whoever touches his bed shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the evening. 6 And anyone who sits on anything on which he who has the discharge has sat shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the evening. 7 And anyone who touches the body of the person who has the discharge shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the evening. 8 And if the man who has the discharge spits on a man who is clean, then he shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the evening. 9 And any saddle on which the man with the discharge rides shall be unclean. 10 And whoever touches anything that was under him shall be unclean until the evening. And he who carries those things shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the evening. 11 And anyone whom the man with the discharge touches without having rinsed his hand in water shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the evening. 12 And the clay vessel, which he who has the discharge touches, shall be broken, and every wooden vessel shall be rinsed in water.

13 And when he who has a discharge is cleansed of his discharge, then he shall count for himself seven days for his cleansing, and wash his clothes; and he shall bathe his body in running water, and shall be clean. 14 And on the eighth day he shall take two turtledoves or two young pigeons and come into the presence of Shema to the entrance of the tent of meeting and give them to the priest. 15 And the priest shall offer them, one for a sin offering and one for a burned offering. And the priest shall make atonement for him in the presence of Shema for his discharge. 16 And if any man’s semen goes out from him, then he shall bathe all his body in water, and be unclean until the evening. 17 And he shall wash with water every garment and every skin on which semen comes, and be unclean until the evening. 18 And when a woman and her man have intercourse with an emission of semen, they shall both bathe themselves in water, and be unclean until the evening.

19 And if a woman has a discharge, and her discharge in her body is blood, she shall be in her impurity for seven days, [and] whoever touches her shall be unclean until the evening. 20 And everything on which she lies during her impurity shall be unclean. And everything on which she sits shall be unclean. 21 And whoever touches her bed shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the evening. 22 And whoever touches anything on which she sits shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the evening. 23 And if it is on the bed or on anything on which she sits, when he touches it, he shall be unclean until the evening. 24 And if her man lies with her and her impurity is on him, he shall be unclean for seven days, and every bed on which he lies shall be unclean.

25 And if a woman has a discharge of her blood for many days, not in the time of her impurity, or if she has a discharge beyond the time of her impurity, she shall be as unclean throughout her discharge as during her menstrual period; she is unclean. 26 Every bed on which she lies, all the days of her discharge, shall be like the bed of her impurity. And everything on which she sits shall be unclean, as in the uncleanness of her impurity. 27 Whoever touches these things shall be unclean, and shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water, and be unclean until the evening. 28 But if she is cleansed of her discharge, then she shall count for herself seven days, and after that she shall be clean. 29 And on the eighth day she shall take two turtledoves or two young pigeons and bring them to the priest, to the entrance of the tent of meeting. 30 And the priest shall offer the one for a sin offering and the other for a burned offering. And the priest shall make atonement for her in the presence of Shema for the discharge of her uncleanness. 31 You shall warn the children of Israel of their uncleanness, so that they do not die in their uncleanness when they defile my tabernacle that is among them.” 32 This is the law for the man who has a discharge and for the man who emits semen so that he is unclean as a result, 33 and for a woman during her menstrual period, and of a person who has a discharge, a man or a woman, and for a man who lies with an unclean woman.

Chapter 16

1 And Shema spoke to Moses after the death of the two sons of Aaron, when they came near in the presence of Shema and died.

2 And Shema said to Moses: “Tell Aaron your brother not to come at any time into the holy [place] inside the veil, in front of the ark-cover which is on the ark, so that he does not die. For I will appear in the cloud at the ark-cover. 3 But Aaron shall come in this way into the holy [place]: with a young bull for a sin offering and a ram for a burned offering. 4 And he shall put on the holy linen tunic, and he shall have the linen undergarments on his body, and shall fasten the linen sash around himself and wear the linen turban; these are the holy garments. And he shall bathe all his body in water and put them on.

5 And he shall take from the congregation of the children of Israel two male goats for a sin offering and one ram for a burned offering. 6 And Aaron shall present the bull as the sin offering for himself, and make atonement for himself and for his house. 7 And he shall take the two goats and set them in the presence of Shema at the entrance of the tent of meeting. 8 And Aaron shall cast lots over the two goats, one lot for Shema and the other lot for Azazel. 9 And Aaron shall present the goat on which the lot fell for Shema and offer him for a sin offering, 10 but he shall set the goat on which the lot fell for Azazel alive in the presence of Shema to make atonement for him, to send him away for Azazel into the wilderness. 11 And Aaron shall present the bull as a sin offering for himself, and shall make atonement for himself and for his house, and shall kill the bull as a sin offering for himself. 12 And he shall take an incense burner full of coals of fire from the altar in the presence of Shema, and his hands full of sweet incense ground fine, and bring it inside the veil. 13 And he shall put the incense on the fire in the presence of Shema, so that the cloud of the incense may cover the ark-cover that is on the testimony, so that he does not die.

14 And he shall take some of the blood of the bull and sprinkle it with his finger toward the ark-cover on the east side, and he shall sprinkle some of the blood with his finger seven times in front of the ark-cover. 15 Then he shall kill the goat of the sin offering that is for the people and bring his blood inside the veil and do with its blood as he did with the blood of the bull, and sprinkle it on the ark-cover and in front of the ark-cover. 16 And he shall make atonement for the holy place, because of the uncleannesses of the children of Israel and because of their transgressions, all their sins. And he shall do the same for the tent of meeting, which stands among them amid their uncleannesses. 17 And there shall be no one in the tent of meeting when he goes in to make atonement in the holy [place] until he comes out and has made atonement for himself and for his house and for all the assembly of Israel. 18 And he shall go out to the altar that is in the presence of Shema and make atonement for it. And he shall take some of the blood of the bull and of the blood of the goat and put it on the horns of the altar all around.

19 And he shall sprinkle some of the blood on it with his finger seven times, and cleanse it, and make holy it from the uncleannesses of the children of Israel. 20 And when he has finished making atonement for the holy place and the tent of meeting and the altar, he shall present the live goat. 21 And Aaron shall lay both his hands on the head of the live goat, and confess over him all the wrongdoings of the children of Israel, and all their transgressions, all their sins; and he shall put them on the head of the goat, and shall send him away with a man who is ready into the wilderness. 22 And the goat shall carry on it all their wrongdoings to an isolated land, and he shall let the goat go in the wilderness. 23 And Aaron shall come into the tent of meeting, and shall take off the linen garments, which he put on when he went into the holy [place], and shall leave them there. 24 And he shall bathe his body in water in a holy place and put on his garments and come out and offer his burned offering and the burned offering of the people and make atonement for himself and for the people. 25 And he shall burn the fat of the sin offering on the altar.

26 And he who lets the goat go to Azazel shall wash his clothes and bathe his body in water, and afterward he shall come into the camp. 27 And he shall carry out of the camp the bull of the sin offering and the goat of the sin offering, whose blood was brought in to make atonement in the holy [place]. And one shall burn their skins and their meat and their dung in the fire. 28 And he who burned them shall wash his clothes and bathe his body in water, and afterward he shall come into the camp. 29 And it shall be a statute to you forever. In the seventh month, on the tenth day of the month, you shall practice self-denial, and shall do no kind of work, either the native or the foreigner who lives among you,

30 for on this day atonement shall be made for you to cleanse you; from all your sins you shall be clean in the presence of Shema. 31 It is a Sabbath of complete rest to you, and you shall practice self-denial. It is a statute forever, 32 the priest, who shall be anointed and who shall be consecrated to be priest in his father’s place, shall make the atonement, and shall put on the linen garments, the holy garments. 33 And he shall make atonement for the holy sanctuary, and he shall make atonement for the tent of meeting and for the altar, [and] he shall make atonement for the priests and for all the people of the assembly. 34 And this shall be a statute forever for you, to make atonement for the children of Israel because of all their sins once a year.” And he did as Shema commanded Moses.

Chapter 17

1 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: 2 “Speak to Aaron and to his sons and to all the children of Israel, and say to them, ‘This is what Shema has commanded, saying, 3 ‘If any one of the house of Israel kills an ox or lamb or goat in the camp, or kills it outside the camp, 4 and has not brought it to the entrance of the tent of meeting, to make it a burned offering or a peace offering to Shema so that it may be accepted for a pleasing aroma, and he killed it outside and he did not bring it to the entrance of the tent of meeting to offer it as an offering to Shema in front of the tabernacle of Shema, that man shall be held responsible for bloodshed. He has shed blood, and that man shall be cut off from among his people. 5 So that the children of Israel may bring their sacrifices, which they sacrifice in the open field, so that they may bring them to Shema, to the entrance of the tent of meeting, to the priest, and sacrifice them as peace offerings to Shema. 6 And the priest shall sprinkle the blood on the altar of Shema, which is at the entrance of the tent of meeting, and burn the fat for a pleasing aroma to Shema. 7 And they shall no longer offer sacrifices at the gates to which they prostitute themselves. This shall be a statute forever to them throughout their generations.’ 8 And you shall say to them, ‘If any one of the house of Israel or of the foreigners who live among them offers a burned offering or sacrifice, 9 and does not bring it to the entrance of the tent of meeting, to sacrifice it to Shema, that man shall be cut off from his people.

10 And if any one of the house of Israel or of the foreigners who live among them eats any kind of blood, I will set my face against the person who eats blood and will cut him off from among his people. 11 For the life of the flesh is in the blood, and I have given it to you on the altar to make atonement for your souls, for it is the blood that makes atonement because of the life.’ 12 Therefore I said to the children of Israel, ‘No person among you shall eat blood, neither shall any foreigner who lives among you eat blood.

13 And any one of the house of Israel, or of the foreigners who live among you, who catches any animal while hunting or bird that may be eaten, he shall pour out its blood and cover it with dust. 14 For the life of all flesh is its blood; its blood is its life.’ Therefore he said to the children of Israel, ‘You shall not eat the blood of any flesh, for the life of all flesh is its blood. Whoever eats it shall be cut off. 15 And every person who skins an animal that dies on its own or is torn by wild animals, whether a native or a foreign resident, shall wash his clothes, and bathe himself in water and be unclean until the evening. 16 But if he does not wash [them] or bathe his body, then he shall bear responsibility for his wrongdoing.’”

Chapter 18

1 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: 2 “Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them, ‘I am Shema your God. 3 You shall not do as they do in the land of Egypt, where you lived, and you shall not do as they do in the land of Canaan, to which I am bringing you. You shall not follow their statutes. 4 You shall follow my rules and keep my statutes and live by them. I am Shema your God. 5 You shall therefore keep my statutes and my rules, by which a man shall live if he does them. I am Shema. 6 None of you shall approach any close relative to uncover their nakedness. I am Shema. 7 You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father or the nakedness of your mother; she is your mother, you shall not uncover her nakedness. 8 You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s wife; it is your father’s nakedness. 9 You shall not uncover the nakedness of your sister, the daughter of your father or the daughter of your mother, whether born at home or born away from home. 10 You shall not uncover the nakedness of your son’s daughter or of your daughter’s daughter, for theirs is your own nakedness. 11 You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s wife’s daughter, born to your father; she is your sister. 12 You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s sister; she is your father’s relative. 13 You shall not uncover the nakedness of your mother’s sister; she is your mother’s relative. 14 You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s brother, and you shall not approach his wife; she is your aunt. 15 You shall not uncover the nakedness of your daughter-in-law; she is your son’s wife; you shall not uncover her nakedness. 16 You shall not uncover the nakedness of your brother’s wife; it is your brother’s nakedness. 17 You shall not uncover the nakedness of a woman and her daughter; you shall not marry her son’s daughter, or her daughter’s daughter to uncover her nakedness; they are relatives; it is wickedness. 18 And you shall not marry a wife in addition to her sister, to be a rival to her, to uncover her nakedness while she is still alive. 19 And you shall not approach a woman to uncover her nakedness while she is impure by her uncleanness. 20 And you shall not have sexual relations with your neighbor’s wife, to defile yourself with her. 21 And you shall not give any of your offspring to make them worship Molech, nor shall you profane the name of your God. I am Shema. 22 You shall not have sexual relations with a male as with a woman; it is an abomination. 23 And you shall not have sexual relations with any animal to defile yourself with it, no woman shall stand in front of an animal to have sexual relations with it; it is a perversion.

24 Do not defile yourselves in any of these things, for by all these the nations, which I drive out from your path, are defiled, 25 and the land became defiled; therefore I punished it for its wrongdoing, and the land vomited out its inhabitants. 26 Therefore you shall keep my statutes and my rules and shall not do any of these abominations, neither the native nor the foreigner who lives among you, 27 for the men who lived in the land before you have done all these abominations and the land is defiled, 28 so that the land does not vomit you out when you defile it, as it vomited out the nation that was before you. 29 For anyone who does any of these abominations, the people that do them shall be cut off from among their people. 30 Therefore you shall obey my instructions never to practice any of these abominable customs, which were practiced before you, and to never defile yourselves by them, for I am Shema your God.’”

Chapter 19

1 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: 2 “Speak to all the congregation of the children of Israel and say to them, ‘You shall be holy, for I Shema your God am holy. 3 Each of you shall respect his mother and his father, and you shall keep my Sabbaths. I am Shema your God. 4 Do not turn to idols or make for yourselves cast-metal gods. I am Shema your God. 5 And when you offer a sacrifice of peace offerings to Shema, you shall offer it so that you may be accepted. 6 It shall be eaten the same day you offer it or on the day after, and anything left over until the third day shall be burned with fire. 7 And if it is eaten at all on the third day, it is an abomination; it shall not be accepted. 8 And he who eats it shall bear responsibility for his wrongdoing, because he has profaned the holy thing of Shema, and that person shall be cut off from his people.

9 And when you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not completely reap the corners of your field, neither shall you gather the gleanings of your harvest. 10 And you shall not glean your vineyard, neither shall you gather the fallen fruit of your vineyard. You shall leave them for the poor and for the foreign resident. I am Shema your God. 11 You shall not steal, neither shall you deceive or lie to one another. 12 And you shall not swear by my name falsely, and profane the name of your God. I am Shema. 13 You shall not oppress your neighbor or rob him. And the wages of a hired servant shall not remain with you all night until the morning. 14 You shall not curse the deaf or put a stumbling block in front of the blind, but you shall fear your God. I am Shema. 15 You shall commit no injustice in judgment. You shall not be partial to the poor or favor the powerful, [but] you shall judge your neighbor fairly. 16 You shall not go around as a slanderer among your people, neither shall you endanger your neighbor’s life. I am Shema. 17 You shall not hate your brother in your heart. You shall surely rebuke your neighbor, so that you do not bear sin because of him. 18 You shall not take vengeance or bear a grudge against the children of your people, but you shall love your neighbor as yourself. I am Shema. 19 You shall keep my statutes. You shall not let your cattle breed with a different kind. And you shall not sow your field with two kinds of seed, nor shall you wear a garment of two materials mixed together.

20 And if a man has sexual relations with a woman who is a slave, assigned to another man and not at all redeemed or given freedom, there shall be an inquiry on him; he shall not be put to death, because she was not free. 21 And he shall bring his guilt offering to Shema, to the entrance of the tent of meeting, a ram for a guilt offering. 22 And the priest shall make atonement for him with the ram of the guilt offering in the presence of Shema for his sin that he has sinned, and the sin which he has sinned shall be forgiven him.

23 And when you come into the land and plant all kinds of trees for food, then you shall count its fruits as their uncircumcision. They shall be like uncircumcised things to you for three years; it shall not be eaten. 24 And in the fourth year all its fruits shall be holy, an offering of praise to Shema. 25 And in the fifth year you shall eat of its fruits, so that it may increase its yield for you. I am Shema your God. 26 You shall not eat anything with the blood, and you shall not use magic spells or read omens. 27 And you shall not round off the edges of the hair on your heads, nor shall you damage the edges of your beards. 28 And you shall not make a cutting in your body for the dead or put any marks on yourselves. I am Shema. 29 Do not profane your daughter by making her a prostitute, so that the land does not fall into prostitution and become full of wickedness. 30 You shall keep my Sabbaths and be afraid of my holiness. I am Shema. 31 Do not turn to mediums or to the spiritists; do not seek them out and be defiled by them. I am Shema your God. 32 You shall stand up in the presence of the gray-haired and honor the elderly, and you shall fear your God. I am Shema.

33 And if a foreigner lives with you in your land, you shall not do him wrong. 34 The foreigner who lives with you shall be to you like the native among you, and you shall love him as yourself, for you were foreign residents in the land of Egypt. I am Shema your God. 35 You shall commit no injustice in judgment, in measures of length, or weight, or quantity. 36 You shall have honest scales, honest weights, an honest ephah, and an honest hin. I am Shema your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt. 37 And you shall observe all my statutes and all my rules, and do them. I am Shema.’”

Chapter 20

1 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: 2 “Also, you shall speak to the children of Israel, any one of the house of Israel or of the foreigners who live in Israel, who gives any of his offspring to Molech, he shall surely be put to death; the people of the land shall stone him with stones. 3 I also will set my face against that man, and will cut him off from among his people, because he has given any of his offspring to Molech to defile my sanctuary and profaned my holy name. 4 And if the people of the land deliberately close their eyes to that man, when he gives any of his offspring to Molech and do not put him to death, 5 then I will set my face against that man and against his family, and will cut them off from among their people, him and all who follow him in prostituting themselves to Molech. 6 And the person who turns to mediums and to the spiritists to prostitute himself to them, I will set my face against that person, and will cut him off from among his people. 7 And be holy, for I, Shema your God, am holy. 8 And you shall keep all my statutes, and do them. I am Shema who makes you holy.

9 For anyone that curses his father or his mother shall surely be put to death; he has cursed his father or his mother; his blood shall be on him. 10 And the man who commits adultery with another man’s wife, the man who commits adultery with his neighbor’s wife, the adulterer and the adulteress shall surely be put to death. 11 And the man that has sexual relations with his father’s wife has uncovered his father’s nakedness; both of them shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be on them. 12 And if a man has sexual relations with his daughter-in-law, both of them shall surely be put to death; they have committed incest; their blood shall be on them. 13 And if a man has sexual relations with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall both surely be put to death; their blood shall be on them. 14 And if a man marries a wife and her mother, it is wickedness; they shall be burned with fire, both he and they, so that there is no wickedness among you. 15 And if a man has sexual relations with an animal, he shall surely be put to death, and you shall kill the animal. 16 And if a woman approaches any animal and has sexual relations with it, you shall kill the woman and the animal; they shall surely be put to death; their blood shall be on them. 17 And if a man marries his sister, his father’s daughter or his mother’s daughter, and sees her nakedness, and she sees his nakedness, it is a disgrace and they shall be cut off in front of the children of their people; he has uncovered his sister’s nakedness; he shall bear responsibility for his wrongdoing. 18 And if a man has sexual relations with a woman during her menstrual period, and uncovers her nakedness, the source of nakedness, and she has exposed the source of her blood, then both of them shall be cut off from among their people. 19 You shall not uncover the nakedness of your father’s sister or of your mother’s sister, for [you have uncovered] the source of nakedness; they shall bear responsibility for their wrongdoing. 20 And if a man has sexual relations with his uncle’s wife, he has uncovered the nakedness of his uncle; they shall bear their sin; they shall be put to death childless. 21 And if a man marries his brother’s wife, it is impurity; he has uncovered his brother’s nakedness; they shall be childless.

22 You shall keep all my statutes and all my rules, and do them, so that the land where I bring you to live will not vomit you out. 23 And you shall not follow the customs of the nations, which I drive out ahead of you, for they did all these things, and I detested them. 24 But I have said to you, ‘You shall inherit their land, and I will give it to you to possess it, a land flowing with milk and honey.’ I am Shema your God, who has separated you from the peoples. 25 You shall therefore make a distinction between the clean animal and the unclean, and between the unclean bird and the clean. And you shall not make yourselves abominable by animal, or by bird, or by anything with which the ground teems, which I have separated from you as uncleanness. 26 And you shall be holy to me, for I am Shema, and have set you apart from the peoples, so that you should be mine. 27 A man or a woman that is a medium or that is a spiritist shall surely be put to death; you shall stone them with stones; their blood shall be on them.”

Chapter 21

1 And Shema said to Moses: “Speak to the priests, the sons of Aaron, and say to them, ‘No one shall defile himself for the dead among his people, 2 except for his close relatives, for his father, and for his mother, for his son, and for his daughter, for his brother, 3 and for his virgin sister, who is close to him and has had no husband; he may defile himself for her. 4 He shall not defile himself as a leader among his people and so profane himself. 5 And they shall not make bald patches on their head, they shall not shave off the corner of their beard, or make any cuts in their body. 6 They shall be holy to their God, and not profane the name of their God; for they offer the offerings of Shema made by fire, the bread of their God; therefore they shall be holy. 7 They shall not marry a woman who is a prostitute or defiled, they shall not marry a woman divorced from her husband, for he is holy to his God. 8 You shall treat him as holy, for he offers the bread of your God; he shall be holy to you, for I, Shema, who makes them holy, am holy. 9 And if the daughter of any priest profanes herself by prostitution, she profanes her father; she shall be burned with fire.

10 And he who is high priest among his brothers, on whose head the anointing oil is poured, and who is consecrated to put on the garments, shall not let [the hair of] his head go loose, nor tear his clothes, 11 he shall not go in to any dead body, nor defile himself for his father or for his mother, 12 he shall not go out of the sanctuary, nor profane the sanctuary of his God; for the crown of the anointing oil of his God is on him: I am Shema. 13 And he shall marry a wife in her virginity. 14 He shall not marry a widow, or a divorced woman, or a defiled woman, or a prostitute; but he shall marry a virgin from his own people. 15 And he shall not profane his offspring among his people, for I am Shema who makes him holy.’”

16 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: 17 “Speak to Aaron, saying, ‘Whoever from among your offspring throughout their generations has a blemish, do not let him approach to bring the bread of his God. 18 For any man who has a blemish shall not approach: a man blind or unable to walk properly, or one disfigured or having a limb too long, 19 or a man that is with a broken foot or a broken hand, 20 or a hunchback, or a dwarf, or one with a blemish in his eyes, or with scaly skin or scabs or a crushed testicle; 21 no one of the offspring of Aaron the priest, who has a blemish, shall bring the offerings of Shema made by fire. He has a blemish; he shall not come near to offer 22 the bread of his God. He shall eat both of the most holy and of the holy, 23 but he shall not go into the veil, nor come close to the altar, because he has a blemish, so that he may not profane my sanctuaries, for I am Shema who makes them holy.’” 24 So Moses spoke to Aaron, and to his sons, and to all the children of Israel.

Chapter 22

1 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: 2 “Speak to Aaron and to his sons, so that they separate themselves from the holy things of the children of Israel, which they consecrate to me, and that they do not profane my holy name. I am Shema. 3 Say to them, ‘Whoever from among your offspring throughout their generations approaches the holy things, which the children of Israel consecrate to Shema, having his uncleanness on him, that person shall be cut off from my presence. I am Shema. 4 Any man of the offspring of Aaron who has leprosy or has a discharge, he shall not eat of the holy things, until he is clean. And anyone who touches anything that has become unclean through contact with the dead or a man whose semen goes from him, 5 or whoever touches any unclean swarming creature, by which he may be made unclean, or a man from whom he may become unclean, whatever uncleanness he has, 6 the person who touches any such thing shall be unclean until the evening, and shall not eat of the holy things, unless he has bathed his body in water. 7 And when the sun goes down, he shall be clean; and afterward he shall eat of the holy things, because it is his bread. 8 An animal that dies on its own or is torn by wild animals, shall not be skinned, becoming unclean by it. I am Shema. 9 They shall therefore obey my instructions, so that they do not bear sin for it and die as a result when they profane it. I am Shema who makes them holy. 10 No outsider shall eat of the holy thing. A foreign resident staying with the priest or a hired servant shall not eat of the holy thing.

11 But if a priest buys a person with his own money, he shall eat of it; and those born in his house shall eat of his bread. 12 And if a priest’s daughter is married to an outsider, she shall not eat of the raised offering of the holy things. 13 But if a priest’s daughter is a widow or divorced, and has no child, and has returned to her father’s house as in her youth, she shall eat of her father’s bread; but no outsider shall eat of it. 14 And if a man eats of the holy thing unintentionally, then he shall add a fifth to it, and shall give to the priest the holy thing. 15 And they shall not profane the holy things of the children of Israel, which they offer to Shema, 16 and so cause them to bear responsibility for the wrongdoing that brings guilt, when they eat their holy things, for I am Shema who makes them holy.’”

17 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: 18 “Speak to Aaron, and to his sons, and to all the children of Israel, and say to them, ‘When any one of the house of Israel or of the foreigner who lives in Israel offers his offering, for any of their vows or their freewill offerings, which they offer to Shema for a burned offering, 19 [you shall offer] of your own free will a male without blemish, of the bulls, and of the sheep, and of the goats. 20 But whatever has a blemish, you shall not offer, for it shall not be acceptable for you. 21 And whoever offers a sacrifice of peace offerings to Shema to fulfill a vow or [for] a freewill offering of the herd or of the flock, it shall be without defect to be accepted; and there shall be no blemish in it. 22 Blind, or broken, or maimed, or having a swelling, or scaly skin, or scabbed, you shall not offer to Shema, nor make an offering by fire of them on the altar to Shema. 23 You may offer a bull or a lamb that has an extra or missing body part for a freewill offering, but for a vow it shall not be accepted. 24 You shall not offer an animal with bruised, or crushed, or broken, or cut testicles to Shema, neither shall you do [this] in your land. 25 You shall not offer any of these as the bread of your God even when received from a foreigner, because corrupters are among them; there is a blemish in them; they shall not be accepted for you.’”

26 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: 27 “When a bull, or a sheep, or a goat is born, it shall be seven days with its mother, and from the eighth day on it shall be accepted for the offering of an offering made by fire to Shema. 28 And as for a bull and a ewe, you shall not kill the animal and its young on the same day. 29 And when you sacrifice a sacrifice of thanksgiving to Shema, you shall sacrifice it so that you may be accepted. 30 On the same day it shall be eaten, and you shall leave none of it until the morning. I am Shema. 31 Therefore you shall keep my commandments, and do them. 32 And you shall not profane my holy name; but I will be treated as holy among the children of Israel. I am Shema who makes them holy, 33 who brought you out of the land of Egypt to be your God. I am Shema.’”

Chapter 23

1 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: 2 “Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them, ‘The appointed festivals of Shema, which you shall proclaim as sacred assemblies, are my appointed festivals. 3 Work shall be done for six days, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of complete rest, a sacred assembly. You shall do no kind of work. It is a Sabbath to Shema in all your homes. 4 And these are the appointed festivals of Shema, sacred assemblies, which you shall proclaim in their appointed time. 5 In the first month, on the fourteenth day of the month at twilight, is Shema’s Passover. 6 And on the fifteenth day of the same month is the Feast of Unleavened Bread to Shema; you shall eat unleavened bread for seven days. 7 On the first day you shall have a sacred assembly; you shall do no ordinary work. 8 And you shall offer an offering made by fire to Shema seven days, and the seventh day is a sacred assembly; you shall do no ordinary work.’”

9 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: 10 “Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them, ‘When you come into the land which I give to you, and reap its harvest, then you shall bring the sheaf, the firstfruits of your harvest, to the priest. 11 And he shall wave the sheaf in the presence of Shema to be accepted for you; on the day after the Sabbath the priest shall wave it. 12 And on the day when you wave the sheaf, you shall offer a male lamb a year old without blemish for a burned offering to Shema. 13 And the grain offering with it shall be two tenths [of an ephah] of fine flour mixed with oil, an offering made by fire to Shema for a pleasing aroma, and drink offerings with it shall be of wine, the fourth part of a hin. 14 And you shall eat neither bread nor roasted grain or fresh heads of grain until this same day, until you have brought the offering of your God. [It shall be a] statute forever throughout your generations in all your homes.

15 And you shall count from the day after the Sabbath, from the day that you brought the sheaf of the wave offering, seven Sabbaths; they shall be complete. 16 You shall count fifty days to the day after the seventh Sabbath, and you shall offer a new grain offering to Shema. 17 You shall bring out of your homes two loaves of bread, cakes of two tenths [of an ephah] of fine flour; they shall be baked with leaven, for firstfruits to Shema. 18 And you shall present with the bread seven lambs a year old without blemish, and one young bull and two rams without blemish; they shall be a burned offering to Shema with their grain offering and their drink offerings, an offering made by fire of a pleasing aroma to Shema. 19 And you shall offer one male goat for a sin offering and two male lambs a year old for a sacrifice of the peace offerings. 20 And the priest shall wave them with the bread of the firstfruits as a wave offering in the presence of Shema with the two lambs; they shall be holy to Shema for the priest. 21 And you shall make a proclamation on the same day; there shall be a sacred assembly to you; you shall do no ordinary work; it is a statute forever in all your homes throughout your generations. 22 And when you reap the harvest of your land, you shall not finish reaping the corners of your field, neither shall you gather the gleaning of your harvest; you shall leave them for the poor and for the foreign resident. I am Shema your God.’”

23 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: 24 “Speak to the children of Israel, saying, ‘In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you shall have a complete rest, a remembrance marked by trumpet blasts, a sacred assembly. 25 You shall do no ordinary work, and you shall offer an offering made by fire to Shema.’”

26 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: 27 “But on the tenth day of this seventh month is the day of atonement. It shall be a sacred assembly to you, and you shall practice self-denial, and you shall offer an offering made by fire to Shema. 28 And you shall do no kind of work on that same day, for it is a day of atonement, to make atonement for you in the presence of Shema your God. 29 For whoever does not practice self-denial on that same day shall be cut off from his people. 30 And I will destroy whoever does any kind of work on that same day from among his people. 31 And you shall do no kind of work; [it shall be] a statute forever throughout your generations in all your homes. 32 It shall be a Sabbath for you of complete rest, and you shall practice self-denial; on the ninth day of the month in the evening, from evening to evening, you shall rest on your Sabbath.’”

33 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: 34 “Speak to the children of Israel, saying, ‘On the fifteenth day of this seventh month is the Feast of Tabernacles for seven days to Shema. 35 On the first day there shall be a sacred assembly; you shall do no ordinary work. 36 Seven days you shall offer an offering made by fire to Shema, and the eighth day shall be a sacred assembly to you, and you shall offer an offering made by fire to Shema: it is a solemn assembly, and you shall do no ordinary work. 37 These are the appointed festivals of Shema, which you shall proclaim to be sacred assemblies, to offer an offering made by fire to Shema, a burned offering, and a grain offering, a sacrifice, and drink offerings, each on its own day; 38 besides the Sabbaths of Shema, and besides all your gifts, and besides all your vows, and besides all your freewill offerings, which you give to Shema.

39 But on the fifteenth day of the seventh month, when you have gathered in the fruits of the land, you shall celebrate the festival of Shema seven days. On the first day there shall be a complete rest, and on the eighth day there shall be a complete rest. 40 And you shall take on the first day the fruit of beautiful trees, branches of palm trees, and branches of thick trees, and willows of the stream, and you shall rejoice in the presence of Shema your God seven days. 41 And you shall celebrate it as a festival to Shema seven days in the year; [it shall be] a statute forever throughout your generations; you shall keep it in the seventh month. 42 You shall live in booths seven days; all native Israelites shall live in booths, 43 so that your generations may know that I made the children of Israel live in booths, when I brought them out of the land of Egypt. I am Shema your God.’” 44 And Moses declared to the children of Israel the appointed festivals of Shema.

Chapter 24

1 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: 2 “Command the children of Israel, to bring you pure oil from pressed olives for the light to cause a lamp to burn continually. 3 Outside the veil of the testimony, in the tent of meeting, Aaron and his sons shall set it up from evening to morning in the presence of Shema continually; [it shall be] a statute forever throughout your generations. 4 He shall keep in order the lamps on the pure lampstand in the presence of Shema until morning. 5 And you shall take fine flour, and use it to bake twelve cakes; two tenths [of an ephah] shall be in one cake. 6 And you shall set them in two rows, six in a row, on the pure table in the presence of Shema. 7 And you shall put pure frankincense on each row, so that it may be with the bread as a reminder, an offering made by fire to Shema. 8 Every Sabbath day he shall set it up in the presence of Shema continually; it is from the children of Israel an everlasting covenant. 9 And it shall be for Aaron and his sons, and they shall eat it in a holy place, for for him it is the most holy [portion] of the offerings of Shema made by fire as a permanent entitlement.’”

10 And the son of an Israelite woman, whose father was an Egyptian, went out among the children of Israel; and the son of the Israelite woman and a man of Israel fought in the camp. 11 And the son of the Israelite woman blasphemed the Name, and cursed. And they brought him to Moses. And his mother’s name was Shelomith, the daughter of Dibri, of the tribe of Dan. 12 And he put him in custody, until Shema’s will became clear to them.

13 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: 14 “Bring the man who has cursed out of the camp, and let all who heard him lay their hands on his head, and let all the congregation stone him. 15 And you shall speak to the children of Israel, saying, ‘Whoever curses his God shall bear his sin. 16 And whoever blasphemes the name of Shema shall surely be put to death; all the congregation shall certainly stone him. The foreign resident as well as the native, when he blasphemes the name of Shema [he] shall be put to death. 17 And whoever fatally strikes any man shall surely be put to death. 18 And whoever fatally strikes an animal shall pay for it, life for life. 19 And whoever causes a blemish in his neighbor, what he has done shall be done to him, 20 fracture for fracture, eye for eye, tooth for tooth; the same injury he has caused another man shall be inflicted on him. 21 And whoever kills an animal shall pay for it, and whoever kills a man shall be put to death. 22 You shall have the same law for the foreign resident and for the native, for I am Shema your God.’” 23 And Moses spoke to the children of Israel, and they brought the man who cursed out of the camp, and stoned him with stones. And the children of Israel did as Shema commanded Moses.

Chapter 25

1 And Shema spoke to Moses on Mount Sinai, saying: 2 “Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them, ‘When you come into the land which I give you, then the land shall keep a Sabbath to Shema. 3 You shall sow your field for six years, and prune your vineyard for six years and gather in its fruits, 4 but in the seventh year there shall be a Sabbath of complete rest for the land, a Sabbath to Shema; you shall not sow your field or prune your vineyard. 5 And you shall not reap the part of your harvest that grows on its own, and you shall not pick the grapes of your unpruned vine; it shall be a year of complete rest for the land. 6 And the produce of the land during its Sabbath shall be food for you; for you and for your male slaves and for your female slaves and for your hired servants and for your foreigners, who are residents with you, 7 and for your cattle and for the wild animals that are in your land, all its produce shall be for food.

8 And you shall count seven Sabbaths of years for yourselves, seven times seven years, so that the seven Sabbaths of years shall total forty-nine years. 9 Then you shall sound the loud trumpet on the tenth day of the seventh month; on the day of atonement you shall sound the trumpet throughout all your land. 10 And you shall consecrate the fiftieth year, and proclaim liberty throughout the land to all its inhabitants; it shall be a jubilee to you, and each of you shall return to his possession, and each of you shall return to his family. 11 That fiftieth year shall be a jubilee for you; you shall neither sow nor reap what grows of itself, nor harvest its unpruned vines, 12 for it is a jubilee. It shall be holy to you. You shall eat its produce out of the field. 13 And in this year of jubilee each of you shall return to his possession.

14 And if you sell anything to your neighbor or buy from your neighbor, you shall not wrong one another. 15 According to the number of years after the jubilee you shall buy from your neighbor, and according to the number of years of the crops it shall be sold to you. 16 Its price shall increase with more years and decrease with fewer years, for it is the number of the crops he is selling you. 17 And you shall not wrong one another, but you shall fear your God, for I am Shema your God. 18 Therefore you shall do my statutes and keep my rules and do them; and you shall live in the land in safety. 19 And the land shall yield its fruit, and you shall eat your fill and live in it in safety.

20 And if you say, ‘What shall we eat in the seventh year, if we may not sow or gather in our crops?’ 21 Then I will command my blessing on you in the sixth year, and it shall produce its crop for the three years. 22 Then you shall sow the eighth year and eat of its crop, the old [store], until the ninth year; until its crop comes in, you shall eat the old [store]. 23 And the land shall not be sold permanently, for the land is mine, for you are foreigners and foreign residents with me. 24 And throughout the land you possess you shall allow the land to be redeemed.

25 And if your brother becomes poor and sells some of his possession, then his nearest relative shall come and shall redeem what his brother has sold. 26 And if a man has no one to redeem it and he becomes rich and has enough to redeem it, 27 then let him calculate the years of its sale and return the balance to the man to whom he sold it, and he shall return to his possession. 28 But if he is not able to get it back for himself, then what he has sold shall remain in the possession of the man who bought it until the year of jubilee. And in the jubilee it shall be released, and he shall return to his possession.

29 And if a man sells a residential house in a walled city, then he may redeem it within a whole year after it is sold; for a full year he shall have the right of redemption. 30 And if it is not redeemed within a full year, then the house that is in the walled city shall belong permanently to the man who bought it, throughout his generations; it shall not be released in the jubilee. 31 But the houses of the villages, which have no wall around them, shall be counted with the fields of the land; they may be redeemed and they shall be released in the jubilee. 32 Nevertheless, the Levites may redeem the houses in the cities they possess at any time. 33 And if one of the Levites redeems, then the house that was sold and the city of his possession shall be released in the jubilee. For the houses of the cities of the Levites are their possession among the children of Israel. 34 But they shall not sell the field of pastureland belonging to their cities, for it is their permanent possession.

35 And if your brother becomes poor, and he cannot support himself among you, then you shall support him; your brother shall live with you as a foreigner and a foreign resident. 36 Take no interest or profit from him, but fear your God, so that your brother may live with you. 37 You shall not give him your money at interest, nor give him your food for profit. 38 I am Shema your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt to give you the land of Canaan, and to be your God.

39 And if your brother becomes poor with you and sells himself to you, you shall not make him serve as a slave. 40 He shall be with you as a hired servant and as a foreign resident. He shall serve with you until the year of jubilee. 41 Then he shall go out from you, he and his children with him, and shall return to his own family, and he shall return to the property of his ancestors. 42 For they are my servants, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt; they shall not be sold as slaves. 43 You shall not rule over him with harshness, but shall fear your God. 44 And as for your male slaves and your female slaves whom you shall have: you shall buy from the nations around you male slaves and female slaves. 45 You shall also buy from the children of the foreigners who live with you and from their families among you, which were born in your land, and they shall be your possession. 46 And you shall make them an inheritance for your children after you, to hold as property; you shall treat them as slaves forever, but you shall not rule over one another harshly among your brothers, the children of Israel.

47 And if a foreigner or foreign resident with you becomes rich, and your brother becomes poor beside him, and sells himself to the foreigner or to the foreign resident with you or to a member of the foreigner’s family, 48 after he is sold he may be redeemed. One of his brothers may redeem him, 49 or his uncle or his uncle’s son may redeem him, or any close relative from his family may redeem him. Or if he becomes rich he may redeem himself. 50 And he shall calculate with the man who bought him from the year that he was sold to him until the year of jubilee, and the price of his sale shall be according to the number of years; his time with him shall be treated as that of a hired servant. 51 If there are still many years left, he shall repay the redemption price from the purchase money in proportion to those years. 52 And if only a few years remain until the year of jubilee, then he shall calculate with him; according to his years he shall give back the price of his redemption. 53 He shall be with him as a servant hired year by year. He shall not rule with harshness over him in your sight. 54 And if he is not redeemed by these [means], then he and his children with him shall go free in the year of jubilee. 55 For the children of Israel are servants to me. They are my servants whom I brought out of the land of Egypt. I am Shema your God.

Chapter 26

1 You shall not make idols for yourselves or erect a carved image or a pillar, and you shall not place any stone with a carved figure in your land to bow down to it, for I am Shema your God. 2 You shall keep my Sabbaths and be afraid of my holiness. I am Shema.

3 If you live by my statutes and keep my commandments and do them, 4 then I will give you your rains in their season, and the land shall yield its produce, and the trees of the field shall yield their fruits. 5 And your threshing shall last until the grape harvest, and the grape harvest shall last until sowing time. And you shall eat your bread until you are full and live in your land safely. 6 And I will give peace in the land, and you shall lie down, and no one shall make you afraid. And I will remove dangerous animals from the land, and a sword shall not go through your land. 7 And you shall chase your enemies, and they shall fall in front of you by the sword. 8 And five of you shall chase a hundred, and one hundred of you shall chase ten thousand, and your enemies shall fall in front of you by the sword. 9 And I shall turn toward you, and make you fruitful, and multiply you, and will establish my covenant with you. 10 And you shall eat old [store] long kept, and you shall clear out the old because of the new. 11 And I will set my tabernacle among you, and my soul shall not detest you. 12 And I will walk among you and will be your God, and you shall be my people. 13 I am Shema your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, so that you should not be their slaves. And I have broken the bars of your yoke, and made you walk upright.

14 But if you will not listen to me, and will not do all these commandments, 15 if you reject my statutes, and if you detest my rules, so that you will not do all my commandments breaking my covenant, 16 I will also do this to you: I will bring terror on you, wasting disease and fever that consume the eyes and make life waste away. And you shall sow your seed in vain, for your enemies shall eat it. 17 And I will set my face against you, and you shall be struck down before your enemies. And those who hate you shall rule over you, and you shall flee when no one pursues you.

18 And if you still will not listen to me after these things, then I will punish you sevenfold for your sins. 19 And I will break the pride of your power, and I will make your sky like iron and your earth like bronze. 20 And your strength shall be spent in vain, for your land shall not yield its produce, and the trees of the field shall not yield their fruits. 21 And if you act in opposition to me and will not obey me, I will bring sevenfold plagues on you according to your sins. 22 And I will send wild animals among you, which shall take your children from you and destroy your cattle and reduce your numbers, and your roads shall become deserted.

23 And if you will not accept my correction through these things, but will act rebelliously against me, 24 then I too will act with hostility toward you, and I myself will strike you sevenfold for your sins. 25 And I will bring a sword on you, that shall carry out the vengeance of the covenant. And you shall be gathered together within your cities, and I will send disease among you, and you shall be handed over to the enemy. 26 When I break your staff of bread, ten women shall bake your bread in one oven, and it will deliver your bread by weight, and you shall eat, and not be full.

27 And if you will not listen to me despite all this, but act rebelliously against me, 28 then I will act with angry hostility toward you, and I also will punish you sevenfold for your sins. 29 And you shall eat the flesh of your sons, and you shall eat the flesh of your daughters. 30 And I will destroy your high places and cut down your sun-images and throw your dead bodies on the bodies of your idols, and my soul shall detest you. 31 And I will lay waste to your cities and will devastate your sanctuary, and I will not smell your pleasing aromas. 32 And I will devastate the land, and your enemies that live in it shall be appalled at it. 33 And I will scatter you among the nations, and I will draw out the sword after you, and your land shall be deserted, and your cities shall lie in ruins. 34 Then the land shall atone for its Sabbath years all the days of desolation, while you are in your enemies’ land; then the land shall rest, and atone for its Sabbath years. 35 Throughout its desolation it shall observe the rest, which it did not have in your Sabbath years when you lived in it.

36 And as for those of you who are left, I will send fear into their hearts in the lands of their enemies. And the sound of a windblown leaf shall make them flee, and they shall flee, as though from a sword, and they shall fall when no one pursues. 37 And they shall stumble over one another, as though facing the sword, when no one pursues. And you shall have no power to stand against your enemies. 38 And you shall die among the nations, and the land of your enemies shall consume you.

39 And those of you that are left shall rot in their wrongdoing in your enemies’ lands, and also they shall rot for the wrongdoings of their fathers. 40 And they shall confess their wrongdoing, and the wrongdoing of their fathers in the offense they committed against me, and also because they acted rebelliously against me. 41 I will also act with hostility toward them, and bring them into the land of their enemies. Then, their uncircumcised heart is humbled and they then accept the punishment for their wrongdoing.

42 Then I will remember my covenant with Jacob and also my covenant with Isaac, and I will also remember my covenant with Abraham, and I will remember the land. 43 The land shall also be left fallow by them and shall atone for its Sabbath years, while it lies deserted without them. And they shall accept the punishment for their wrongdoing, because they rejected my rules and detested my statutes. 44 And yet for all that, when they are in the lands of their enemies, I will not reject them, neither will I detest them to destroy them completely and break my covenant with them, for I am Shema their God. 45 But for their sakes I will remember the covenant of their ancestors, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt in front of the nations, so that I might be their God. I am Shema.’” 46 These are the statutes and rules and laws that Shema made between him and the children of Israel on Mount Sinai by Moses.

Chapter 27

1 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: 2 “Speak to the children of Israel, and say to them, ‘When a man makes a special vow to Shema according to your estimation of persons, 3 then the valuation of a male from twenty years old to sixty years old shall be fifty shekels of silver, according to the shekel of the sanctuary. 4 And if she is female, then the valuation shall be thirty shekels. 5 And if he is from five years old to twenty years old, then the valuation shall be twenty shekels for a male and ten shekels for a female. 6 And if he is from a month old to five years old, then the valuation shall be five shekels of silver for a male and three shekels of silver for a female. 7 And if he is from sixty years old and older, if it is a male, then the valuation shall be fifteen shekels and for the female ten shekels. 8 But if he is poorer than the valuation, then he shall be placed in front of the priest, and the priest shall value him; the priest shall value him according to what the man who made the vow can afford.

9 And if it is an animal that one offers as an offering to Shema, all that any man gives of it to Shema shall be holy. 10 He shall not alter it or change it, good for bad, or bad for good; and if he substitutes one animal for another, then both it and the animal substituted for it shall be holy.

11 And if it is any unclean animal that one does not offer as an offering to Shema, then he shall set the animal in front of the priest, 12 and the priest shall value it, whether it is good or bad; as the priest values it, so it shall be. 13 But if he redeems it, then he shall add a fifth to the valuation.

14 And when a man dedicates his house to be holy to Shema, then the priest shall value it, whether it is good or bad; the priest’s valuation shall stand. 15 And if the man who dedicated it redeems his house, then he shall add a fifth of the money of the valuation to it, and it shall be his.

16 And if a man dedicates to Shema part of the field he owns, then your valuation shall be according to its sowing; the sowing of a homer of barley shall be valued at fifty shekels of silver. 17 And if he dedicates his field from the year of jubilee, your valuation shall stand. 18 But if he dedicates his field after the jubilee, then the priest shall calculate for him the money according to the years that remain until the year of jubilee, and a dedication shall be made from the valuation. 19 And if the man who consecrated the field redeems it, then he shall add a fifth of the valuation to it, and it shall be secured as his property. 20 And if he will not redeem the field, or if he has sold the field to another man, it shall not be redeemed again. 21 But the field, when it is released in the jubilee, shall be holy to Shema, like a devoted field; the possession of it shall be the priest’s.

22 And if a man consecrates to Shema part of a field he has bought, which is not part of his own inherited property, 23 then the priest shall calculate for him the amounts of the valuation until the year of jubilee, and he shall give the valuation on that day as a holy thing to Shema. 24 In the year of jubilee the field shall return to the man from whom it was bought, to the man who owns the land. 25 And every valuation shall be according to the shekel of the sanctuary: the shekel [is] twenty gerahs.

26 But no one shall dedicate any firstborn among animals, which already belongs to Shema as a firstborn; whether bull or ewe, it is Shema’s. 27 And if it is of an unclean animal, then he shall ransom it according to the valuation, and shall add to it a fifth of it; or if it is not redeemed, then it shall be sold according to the valuation.

28 But no devoted thing that a man devotes to Shema of all that he has, whether person or animal, or of the field he owns, shall be sold or redeemed; every devoted thing is most holy to Shema. 29 No person devoted to destruction shall be ransomed; he shall surely be put to death.

30 And every tithe of the land, whether of the seed of the land, and of the fruit of the tree, is Shema’s; it is holy to Shema. 31 And if a man redeems any of his tithe, then he shall add a fifth of its value.

32 And every tithe of the herd or the flock, whatever passes under the staff, the tenth shall be holy to Shema. 33 He shall not check whether it is good or bad, neither shall he change it. And if he changes it at all, then both it and the animal substituted for it shall be holy; it shall not be redeemed.’”
