1 And these are the names of the sons of Israel, who came into Egypt with Jacob; each man came with his household. 2 Reuben, and Simeon, and Levi, and Judah, 3 and Issachar, and Zebulun, and Benjamin, 4 Dan, and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher. 5 And all the descendants of Jacob numbered seventy people, and Joseph was [already] in Egypt. 6 And Joseph died, and all his brothers, and all that generation. 7 And the children of Israel were fruitful, and increased abundantly, and multiplied, and became extremely powerful, and the land was filled with them.
8 And a new king came to power in Egypt, who did not know Joseph. 9 And he said to his people: “Look, the people of the children of Israel are more numerous and more powerful than us. 10 Come, let us deal wisely with them, so that they do not multiply, and if war breaks out, they too will join our enemies, and fight against us, and leave the land.” 11 And they set taskmasters over them to oppress them with forced labor. And they built for Pharaoh residential cities, Pithom and Rameses. 12 But the more they oppressed them, the more they became fruitful and the more they spread out. And they were in dread of the children of Israel. 13 And the Egyptians made the children of Israel work as slaves under harsh conditions. 14 And they made their lives bitter with hard labor, making mortar and bricks, and in all kinds of labor in the field, all their labor, which they were forced to do under harsh conditions.
15 And the king of Egypt said to the Hebrew midwives, one of whom was named Shiphrah and the other Puah, 16 and he said: “When you serve as midwives to the Hebrew women, and see them on the birthing stool: if it is a son, then you shall kill him; but if it is a daughter, then she shall live.” 17 But the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them, but kept the boys alive. 18 And Pharaoh called for the midwives, and said to them: “Why have you done this thing, and allowed the boys to live?” 19 And the midwives said to Pharaoh: “Because the Hebrew women are not like the Egyptian women; for they are vigorous, and give birth before the midwives come to them.” 20 And God treated well the midwives, and the people multiplied, and became very powerful. 21 And because the midwives feared God, he gave them families. 22 And Pharaoh commanded all his people, saying: “You shall throw every son born to the Hebrews into the river, and every daughter you shall keep alive.”
1 And a man from the family of Levi went, and took a daughter of Levi [as his wife]. 2 And the woman conceived, and gave birth to a son. And when she saw that he was a fine child, she hid him three months. 3 And when she could no longer hide him, his mother took for him a basket of reeds, and coated it with bitumen and with pitch, and she put the child in it, and laid [it] among the reeds by the river’s bank. 4 And his sister stood at a distance, to find out what would be done to him. 5 And the daughter of Pharaoh came down to bathe at the river; and her young female attendants walked along by the riverbank. And she saw the basket among the reeds, and sent her female servant to fetch it. 6 And she opened it, and saw the child, and, look, the boy was crying. And Pharaoh’s daughter took pity on him, and said: “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.” 7 Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter: “Shall I go and call you a Hebrew woman to nurse him, so that she may nurse the child for you?” 8 And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her: “Go.” And the girl went and called the child’s mother. 9 And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her: “Look, the child is yours, and nurse it for me, and I will give you your wages.” And the woman took the child, and nursed it. 10 And the boy grew, and she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. And she named him Moses, and said: “Because I drew him out of the water.”
11 During that time, when Moses was grown up, he went out to his relatives, and looked on their burdens. And he saw an Egyptian striking a Hebrew, one of his relatives. 12 And he looked this way and that, and when he saw that there was no man, he struck the Egyptian, and hid him in the sand. 13 And he went out the next day, and, look, two men of the Hebrews were fighting, and he said to the one who was in the wrong: “Why do you strike your companion?” 14 And he said: “Who made you a ruler and a judge over us? Do you mean to kill me, as you killed the Egyptian?" And Moses was afraid, and said: “Surely what happened is known.” 15 And Pharaoh heard of this matter, and he tried to kill Moses. But Moses fled from Pharaoh, and lived in the land of Midian. And he sat down by a well.
16 Now the priest of Midian had seven daughters, and they came and drew water, and filled the troughs to water their father’s flock. 17 And the shepherds came and drove them away, but Moses stood up and saved them, and watered their flock. 18 And when they came to Reuel their father, he said: “How is it that you have come so soon today?” 19 And they said: “An Egyptian rescued us from the shepherds, and also he drew water for us, and watered the flock.” 20 And he said to his daughters: “And where is [he]? Why is it that you have left the man? Call him, so that he may eat bread.” 21 And Moses began to live with the man. And he gave Moses Zipporah his daughter as his wife. 22 And she gave birth to a son, and named him Gershom, for he said: “I have been a foreign resident in a foreign land.”
23 During that long period the king of Egypt died, and the children of Israel sighed because of the slavery, and they cried out, and their cry came up to God because of the slavery. 24 And God heard their groaning, and God remembered his covenant with Abraham, and with Isaac, and with Jacob. 25 And God saw the children of Israel, and God took notice [of them].
1 And Moses was tending the flock of Jethro his father-in-law, the priest of Midian, and he led the flock to the far side of the wilderness, and came to the mountain of God, to Horeb. 2 And the angel of Shema appeared to him in a flame of fire from the middle of a bush, and he looked, and, look, the bush burned with fire, and the bush was not burned up. 3 And Moses said: “I will go over, and see this great sight, why the bush does not burn up.” 4 And when God saw that he went over to see, God called to him from the middle of the bush, and said: “Moses, Moses”. And he said: “Here I am.” 5 And he said: “Do not come near, take your shoes off your feet, for the place on which you are standing is holy ground.” 6 And he said: “I am the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” And Moses hid his face, for he was afraid to look at God.
7 And Shema said: “I have surely seen the suffering of my people who are in Egypt, and have heard their cry because of their taskmasters; for I know his sorrow; 8 and I have come down to rescue them from the Egyptians, and to bring them up out of that land to a good and broad land, to a land flowing with milk and honey; to the place of the Canaanite, the Hittite, and the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Girgashite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite. 9 And now, look, the cry of the children of Israel has come to me, also I have seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them. 10 Come now, and I will send you to Pharaoh, so that you may bring my people the children of Israel out of Egypt.” 11 And Moses said to God: “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?” 12 And he said: “I will certainly be with you, and this shall be the sign to you, that I have sent you: When you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God upon this mountain.” 13 And Moses said to God: “Look, when I come to the children of Israel, and say to them, ‘The God of your ancestors has sent me to you,’ and they say to me, ‘What is his name?’ What shall I say to them?”
14 And God said to Moses: “I AM THAT I AM,” and he said: “You shall say this to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’” 15 And God also said to Moses: “You shall say this to the children of Israel, ‘Shema, the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has sent me to you’. This is my name forever, and this is how I am to be remembered through all generations. 16 Go, and gather the elders of the children of Israel together, and say to them, ‘Shema, the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, and of Isaac, and of Jacob, has appeared to me, saying, ‘I have surely observed you, and what has been done to you in Egypt, 17 and I have said, I will bring you up out of the suffering of Egypt to the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, and the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Girgashite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite, to a land flowing with milk and honey,’ 18 and they shall listen to your voice. And you shall come, you and the elders of Israel, to the king of Egypt, and you shall say to him, ‘Shema, the God of the Hebrews, has called upon us. Please let us travel for three days into the wilderness, so that we may sacrifice to Shema our God.’
19 And I know that the king of Egypt will not give you permission to go, except by a mighty hand. 20 And I will reach out my hand, and strike Egypt with all my wonders which I will do in it, and after that he will let you go. 21 And I will give this people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, so that when you go, you shall not go empty-handed. 22 But every man shall ask his neighbor, and every woman shall ask her neighbor and the woman staying in her house, for silver vessels, and gold vessels, and clothing, and you shall put them on your sons, and on your daughters, and you shall plunder the Egyptians.”
1 And Moses answered and said: “But, look, they will not believe me or listen to my voice, for they will say, ‘Shema has not appeared to you.’”
2 And Shema said to him: “What is that in your hand?” And he said: “A staff.” 3 And he said: “Throw it on the ground.” And he threw it on the ground, and it became a serpent. And Moses ran away from it. 4 And Shema said to Moses: “Reach out your hand, and seize it by the tail.” And he reached out his hand, and took hold of it, and it became a staff in his hand. 5 “So that they may believe that Shema, the God of their ancestors, the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob, has appeared to you.”
6 And Shema said also to him: “Now put your hand inside your clothing against your chest.” And he put his hand inside his clothing against his chest. And when he took it out from his chest, look, his hand was leprous, as [white as] snow. 7 And he said: “Put your hand inside your clothing against your chest again.” And he put his hand inside his clothing against his chest again, and when he took it out from his chest, look, it was restored to be like [the rest of] his skin. 8 “And if they will not believe you, or listen to the voice of the first sign, they will believe the voice of the second sign. 9 And if they will not believe even these two signs, or listen to your voice, you shall take some water of the river, and pour it on the dry land, and the water which you take out of the river shall become blood on the dry land.” 10 And Moses said to Shema: “Oh, my Lord, I am not eloquent, either before now or since you have spoken to your servant, for I am slow of speech, and of a slow tongue.”
11 And Shema said to him: “Who has made man’s mouth? Or who makes [a man] unable to speak, or deaf, or seeing, or blind? Look, it is I, Shema! 12 Now therefore go, and I will be with your mouth, and teach you what you shall speak.” 13 And he said: “Oh, my Lord, please send [the person whom] you will send.” 14 And Shema became angry with Moses, and he said: “Look, Aaron your brother the Levite, I know that he can speak well! And also, look, he comes out to meet you, and when he sees you, he will be glad in his heart. 15 And you shall speak to him, and put the words in his mouth, and I will be with your mouth, and with his mouth, and will teach you what you shall do. 16 And he shall speak for you to the people; and he shall be your mouth, and you shall be like God to him. 17 And you shall take in your hand this staff, with which you shall do the signs.” 18 And Moses went and returned to Jethro his father-in-law, and said to him: “Please let me go and return to my relatives that are in Egypt, and see whether they are still alive.” And Jethro said to Moses: “Go in peace.”
19 And Shema said to Moses in Midian: “Go, return to Egypt, for all the men who tried to kill you are dead.” 20 And Moses took his wife and his sons, and put them on a donkey, and he returned to the land of Egypt. And Moses took the staff of God in his hand.
21 And Shema said to Moses: “When you go back to Egypt, see that you do before Pharaoh all the wonders which I have put in your hand, but I will harden his heart and he will not let the people go. 22 And you shall say to Pharaoh, ‘Shema says this, ‘Israel is my son, my firstborn, 23 and I have said to you, ‘Let my son go, so that he may serve me. And you have refused to let him go. Look, I will kill your son, your firstborn.’” 24 And on the way at the lodging place Shema met him, and tried to kill him. 25 Then Zipporah took a flint, and cut off the foreskin of her heart, and threw it at his feet. And she said: “Surely you are a bridegroom of blood to me.” 26 So he left her alone. Then she said: “A bridegroom of blood [you are], because of the circumcision.”
27 And Shema said to Aaron: “Go into the wilderness to meet Moses.” And he went, and met him at the mountain of God, and kissed him. 28 And Moses told Aaron all the words of Shema which he had sent him, and all the signs which he had commanded him to perform. 29 And Moses and Aaron went and gathered together all the elders of the children of Israel. 30 And Aaron spoke all the words which Shema had spoken to Moses, and did the signs in front of the people. 31 And the people believed, and they announced that Shema had remembered the children of Israel, and that he had seen their suffering, and they bowed down and worshiped.
1 And afterward Moses and Aaron came, and said to Pharaoh: “Shema says this, the God of Israel, ‘Let my people go, so that they may hold a festival to me in the wilderness.’” 2 And Pharaoh said: “Who is Shema that I should obey his voice and let Israel go? I do not know Shema, and moreover, I will not let Israel go.” 3 And they said: “The God of the Hebrews has met with us, please let us travel into the wilderness for three days, and sacrifice to Shema our God, so that he does not strike us with disease, or with the sword.” 4 And the king of Egypt said to them: “Why do you, Moses and Aaron, take the people away from their work? Get back to your forced labor.” 5 And Pharaoh said: “Look, they are now more numerous than the people of the land, and you make them rest from their burdens.”
6 And the same day Pharaoh commanded the taskmasters of the people, and their officers, saying: 7 “You shall no longer give the people straw to make brick, as in the past; let them go and gather straw for themselves. 8 And you shall require them to make the same number of bricks as in the past; you shall not reduce it, for they are idle; therefore they cry, saying, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to our God.’ 9 Give the men heavier work, so that they may pay attention to it; and let them pay no attention to lying words.”
10 And the taskmasters and the officers of the people went out, and they spoke to the people, saying: “Pharaoh said this, ‘I will not give you straw. 11 Go yourselves, get straw where you can find it, for there shall be no decrease at all in your work.’” 12 So the people scattered throughout all the land of Egypt to gather stubble for straw. 13 And the taskmasters were pressing the people saying: “Complete your work, your daily task each day, as when there was straw given to you.” 14 And the officers of the children of Israel, whom Pharaoh’s taskmasters had set over them, were beating [the people], asking: “Why have you not completed your task both yesterday and today, in making brick as in the past?”
15 Then the officers of the children of Israel came and cried to Pharaoh, saying: “Why do you treat your servants this way? 16 There is no straw given to your servants, and they say to us, ‘Make bricks,’ and, look, your servants are beating [the people]; but the fault is in you.” 17 But he said: “You are idle, you are idle; therefore you say, ‘Let us go and sacrifice to Shema.’ 18 Go therefore now, and work, for no straw shall be given to you, yet you shall deliver the number of bricks.” 19 And the officers of the children of Israel saw that they were in trouble, when it was said: “Nothing shall be reduced from your daily quantity of bricks.” 20 And they met Moses and Aaron, who stood in the way, as they left Pharaoh, 21 and they said to them: “Shema shall look at you, and judge, because you have made our smell abhorrent in the eyes of Pharaoh, and in the eyes of his servants, to put a sword in his hand to kill us.” 22 And Moses returned to Shema, and said: “Lord, why have you done evil to this people, and why did you ever send me? 23 For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in your name, he has done evil to this people, and you have not rescued your people at all.”
1 And Shema said to Moses: “You shall see what I will do to Pharaoh, for by a strong hand he shall let them go, and by a strong hand he shall drive them out of his land.”
2 And Shema spoke to Moses, and said to him: “I am Shema, 3 and I appeared to Abraham, and to Isaac, and to Jacob, as God Almighty, but by my name Shema, I was not known to them. 4 And I have also established my covenant with them, to give them the land of Canaan, the land where they lived as foreigners. 5 And also I have heard the groaning of the children of Israel, whom the Egyptians keep in slavery, and I have remembered my covenant. 6 Therefore say to the children of Israel, ‘I am Shema, and I will bring you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians, and I will rescue you from their slavery, and I will redeem you with an outstretched arm, and with great judgments, 7 and I will take you as my people, and I will be your God, and you shall know that I am Shema your God, who brought you out from under the burdens of the Egyptians. 8 And I will bring you into the land which I lifted up my hand to give to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, and I will give it to you as an inheritance. I am Shema.’” 9 And Moses spoke so to the children of Israel, but they did not listen to Moses because of their deep distress, and their cruel slavery. And they said to Moses: “Please leave us alone, so that we may serve the Egyptians! For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.”
10 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: 11 “Go in, tell Pharaoh king of Egypt to let the children of Israel go out of his land.” 12 And Moses spoke in the presence of Shema, saying: “Look, the children of Israel have not listened to me, how then shall Pharaoh hear me; for my lips are uncircumcised?”
13 And Shema spoke to Moses and to Aaron, and gave them instructions for the children of Israel, and to Pharaoh king of Egypt, to bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt. 14 And these are the heads of their fathers’ houses: The sons of Reuben the firstborn of Israel: Hanoch, and Pallu, Hezron, and Carmi; these are the families of Reuben. 15 And the sons of Simeon: Jemuel, and Jamin, and Ohad, and Jachin, and Zohar, and Shaul the son of a Canaanite woman; these are the families of Simeon. 16 And these are the names of the sons of Levi according to their generations: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari; and the years of the life of Levi were one hundred and thirty-seven years. 17 And the sons of Gershon: Libni and Shimei, according to their families. 18 And the sons of Kohath: Amram, and Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel; and the years of the life of Kohath were one hundred and thirty-three years. 19 And the sons of Merari: Mahli and Mushi; these are the families of the Levites according to their generations.
20 And Amram married Jochebed, his father’s sister, and she gave birth to Aaron, and Moses, and Miriam their sister; and the years of the life of Amram were one hundred and thirty-six years. 21 And the sons of Izhar: Korah, and Nepheg, and Zichri. 22 And the sons of Uzziel: Mishael, and Elizaphan, and Sithri. 23 And Aaron married Elisheba, the daughter of Amminadab, the sister of Nahshon, as his wife, and she gave birth to Nadab, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar. 24 And the sons of Korah: Assir, and Elkanah, and Abisaf; these are the families of the Korahites. 25 And Eleazar, Aaron’s son, married one of the daughters of Putiel as his wife, and she gave birth to Phinehas; these are the heads of the fathers’ [houses] of the Levite according to their families. 26 These are the same Aaron and Moses, to whom Shema said: “Bring out the children of Israel from the land of Egypt according to their organized groups.” 27 It was they who spoke to Pharaoh king of Egypt, to bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt; these are the same Moses and Aaron. 28 And on the day when Shema spoke to Moses in the land of Egypt,
29 Shema spoke to Moses, saying: “I am Shema; speak to Pharaoh king of Egypt all that I speak to you.” 30 And Moses said in the presence of Shema: “Look, my lips are uncircumcised, and how shall Pharaoh hear me?”
1 And Shema said to Moses: “See, I have made you as God to Pharaoh, and Aaron your brother shall be your prophet. 2 You shall speak all that I command you, and Aaron your brother shall speak to Pharaoh to let the children of Israel go out of his land. 3 And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and multiply my signs and my wonders in the land of Egypt. 4 But Pharaoh will not listen to you, and I will lay my hand on Egypt, and bring my organized groups, my people the children of Israel, out of the land of Egypt by great judgments. 5 And all the Egyptians shall know that I am Shema, when I stretch out my hand upon Egypt, and bring out my people the children of Israel from among them.” 6 And Moses and Aaron did as Shema commanded them; that is what they did. 7 And Moses [was] eighty years old, and Aaron eighty-three years old, when they spoke to Pharaoh.
8 And Shema spoke to Moses and to Aaron, saying: 9 “When Pharaoh speaks to you, saying, ‘Show a sign or a wonder for you,’ then you shall say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff, and throw it down in front of Pharaoh so that it becomes a serpent.’” 10 And Moses and Aaron went in in front of Pharaoh, and they did so, as Shema had commanded, and Aaron threw down his staff in front of Pharaoh and in front of his servants, and it became a serpent. 11 Then Pharaoh also called for the wise men and the sorcerers, and they also, the magicians of Egypt, did the same thing with their magic spells. 12 For each man threw down his staff, and they became serpents, but Aaron’s staff swallowed up their staffs. 13 And Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he did not listen to them, as Shema had spoken.
14 And Shema spoke to Moses: “Pharaoh’s heart is stubborn; he refuses to let the people go. 15 Go to Pharaoh in the morning; look, he goes out to the water, and you shall stand by the bank of the river to meet him, and you shall take in your hand the staff that was turned into a serpent. 16 And you shall say to him, ‘Shema, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me to you, saying, ‘Let my people go, so that he may serve me in the wilderness, and, look, until now you have not listened. 17 Shema says this, ‘In this you shall know that I am Shema; look, I will strike the waters in the river with the staff in my hand, and they shall be turned to blood. 18 And the fish that are in the river shall die, and the river shall become foul, and the Egyptians will loathe drinking water from the river.’” And Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and said to him: “Shema, the God of the Hebrews, has sent us to you, saying, ‘Let my people go, so that he may serve me in the wilderness, and, look, until now you have not listened.’ Shema says this, ‘In this you shall know that I am Shema; look, I will strike the waters in the river with the staff in my hand, and they shall be turned to blood. And the fish that are in the river shall die, and the river shall become foul, and the Egyptians will loathe drinking water from the river.’”
19 And Shema said to Moses: “Say to Aaron, ‘Take your staff, and stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt, and over their streams, over their rivers, and over their pools, and over all their ponds of water, so that they may become blood, and there shall be blood throughout all the land of Egypt, both in [vessels of] wood and in [vessels of] stone.’” 20 And Moses and Aaron did so, as Shema commanded, and he lifted up his staff, and struck the waters that were in the river, in front of Pharaoh, and in front of his servants; and all the waters that were in the river were turned to blood. 21 And the fish that were in the river died, and the river became foul, and the Egyptians could not drink water from the river, and the blood was throughout all the land of Egypt. 22 And the magicians of Egypt did the same thing with their magic spells, and Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he did not listen to them, as Shema had spoken. 23 And Pharaoh turned and went into his house, and he did not take even this to heart. 24 And all the Egyptians dug around the river for water to drink, for they could not drink of the water of the river. 25 And seven days had passed, after Shema struck the river.
26 And Shema said to Moses: “Go in to Pharaoh, and speak to him, ‘Shema says this, ‘Let my people go, so that he may serve me. 27 And if you refuse to let [them] go, look, I will plague all your country with frogs, 28 and the river shall swarm with frogs, which shall go up and come into your houses, and into your bedrooms, and on your beds, and into the houses of your servants, and on your people, and into your ovens, and into your kneading bowls, 29 and the frogs shall come up both on you, and on your people, and on all your servants.’” And Moses and Aaron came in to Pharaoh and spoke to him: “Shema says this, ‘Let my people go, so that he may serve me. And if you refuse to let [them] go, look, I will plague all your country with frogs, and the river shall swarm with frogs, which shall go up and come into your houses, and into your bedrooms, and on your beds, and into the houses of your servants, and on your people, and into your ovens, and into your kneading bowls, and the frogs shall come up both on you, and on your people, and on all your servants.’”
1 And Shema said to Moses: “Say to Aaron, ‘Stretch out your hand with your staff over the streams, and over the rivers, and over the pools, and cause frogs to come up on the land of Egypt.’” And Moses said to Aaron: “Stretch out your hand with your staff, so that the frogs will come up on the land of Egypt.’” 2 And Aaron stretched out his hand over the waters of Egypt, and the frogs came up, and covered the land of Egypt. 3 And the magicians of Egypt did the same with their magic spells, and the frogs came up on the land of Egypt. 4 Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron, and said: “Pray to Shema, to take away the frogs from me, and from my people; and I will let the people go, so that they may sacrifice to Shema.” 5 And Moses said to Pharaoh: “You have the honor of choosing for me what time I shall pray for you, and for your servants, and for your people, so that the frogs may be destroyed around you and your houses, and from your servants, and from your people, and remain in the river only?” 6 And he said: “For tomorrow.” And he said: “It shall be as you say, so that you may know that there is no one like Shema our God. 7 And the frogs shall go away from you, and from your houses, and from your servants, and from your people. They shall remain in the river only.” 8 And Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh, and Moses cried to Shema concerning the frogs which he had brought on Pharaoh. 9 And Shema did according to the word of Moses, and the frogs died out of the houses, and out of the courtyards, and out of the fields. 10 And they gathered them together in heaps, and the land stank. 11 But when Pharaoh saw that there was relief, he hardened his heart, and did not listen to them, as Shema had spoken.
12 And Shema said to Moses: “Say to Aaron, ‘Stretch out your hand with your staff, and strike the dust of the earth, so that it may become lice throughout all the land of Egypt.’” 13 And they did so, and Aaron stretched out his hand with his staff, and struck the dust of the earth, and there were lice on people, and on animals. All the dust of the earth became lice throughout all the land of Egypt. 14 And the magicians did so with their magic spells to produce lice, but they could not. And there were lice on people, and on animals. 15 Then the magicians said to Pharaoh: “This is the finger of God,” and Pharaoh’s heart was hardened, and he did not listen to them, as Shema had spoken.
16 And Shema said to Moses: “Get up early in the morning, and stand in front of Pharaoh, look, he will go out to the water, and say to him, ‘Shema says this, ‘Let my people go, so that he may serve me. 17 Otherwise, if you will not let my people go, look, I will send the raven on you, and on your servants, and on your people, and into your houses, and the houses of the Egyptians shall be full of ravens, and also the ground on which they are. 18 And I will set apart on that day the land of Goshen, in which my people live, so that no ravens shall be there, so that you may know that I am Shema in the middle of the earth. 19 And I will put a division between my people and your people. This sign shall happen by tomorrow.’” And Moses and Aaron went in in front of Pharaoh and spoke to him: “Shema says this, ‘Let my people go, so that he may serve me. Otherwise, if you will not let my people go, look, I will send the raven on you, and on your servants, and on your people, and into your houses, and the houses of the Egyptians shall be full of ravens, and also the ground on which they are. And I will set apart on that day the land of Goshen, in which my people live, so that no ravens shall be there, so that you may know that I am Shema in the middle of the earth. And I will put a division between my people and your people. This sign shall happen by tomorrow.’”
20 And Shema did so. And a severe plague of ravens came into the house of Pharaoh, and into his servants’ houses in all the land of Egypt. And the land was ruined because of the raven.
21 And Pharaoh called for Moses and for Aaron, and said: “Go sacrifice to your God in the land.” 22 And Moses said: “It would not be right to do so, for we shall sacrifice the abominations of the Egyptians to Shema our God. Look, shall we sacrifice the abominations of the Egyptians in front of them, and will they not stone us? 23 We will go three days’ journey into the wilderness, and sacrifice to Shema our God, as he shall command us.” 24 And Pharaoh said: “I will let you go, so that you may sacrifice to Shema your God in the wilderness; only you shall not go very far away. Pray for me.” 25 And Moses said: “Look, I go out from you, and I will pray to Shema, so that the raven may go away from Pharaoh, and from his servants, and from his people, tomorrow. Only do not let Pharaoh act deceitfully anymore in not letting the people go to sacrifice to Shema.” 26 And Moses went out from Pharaoh, and prayed to Shema. 27 And Shema did according to the word of Moses, and he removed the raven from Pharaoh, and from his servants, and from his people; not one remained. 28 And Pharaoh hardened his heart this time also, and he did not let the people go.
1 Then Shema said to Moses: “Go in to Pharaoh, and say to him, ‘Shema says this, the God of the Hebrews, ‘Let my people go, so that he may serve me. 2 For if you refuse to let [them] go, and continue to hold them, 3 look, the hand of Shema is on your cattle, which are in the field, on the horses, and on the donkeys, and on the camels, on the herds, and on the flocks: [there shall be] a very severe plague. 4 And Shema shall make a distinction between the cattle of Israel and the cattle of Egypt, so that nothing shall die of all that belongs to the children of Israel.’ 5 And Shema appointed a set time, saying: ‘Tomorrow Shema shall do this thing in the land.’” And Moses and Aaron went in in front of Pharaoh and said to him: “Shema says this, God of the Hebrews, ‘Let my people go, so that he may serve me. For if you refuse to let [them] go, and continue to hold them, look, the hand of Shema is on your cattle, which are in the field, on the horses, and on the donkeys, and on the camels, on the herds, and on the flocks: [there shall be] a very severe plague. And Shema shall make a distinction between the cattle of Israel and the cattle of Egypt, so that nothing shall die of all that belongs to the children of Israel.’ Tomorrow Shema shall do this thing in the land.’”
6 And Shema did that thing on the next day, and all the cattle of Egypt died, but of the cattle of the children of Israel not one died. 7 And Pharaoh sent, and look, not one of the cattle of the children of Israel was dead. But the heart of Pharaoh was hardened, and he did not let the people go.
8 And Shema said to Moses and to Aaron: “Take handfuls of soot from the furnace, and let Moses throw it toward the sky in front of Pharaoh. 9 And it shall become fine dust over all the land of Egypt, and become boils breaking out in sores on people and animals throughout all the land of Egypt.” 10 And they took soot from the furnace, and stood in front of Pharaoh. And Moses threw it up toward the sky, and it became a boil breaking out in sores on people and on animals. 11 And the magicians could not stand in front of Moses because of the boils, for the boils were on the magicians, and on all the Egyptians. 12 And Shema hardened the heart of Pharaoh, and he did not listen to them, as Shema had spoken to Moses.
13 And Shema said to Moses: “Get up early in the morning, and stand in front of Pharaoh, and say to him, ‘Shema says this, the God of the Hebrews, ‘Let my people go so that he may serve me, 14 for this time I will send all my plagues on your heart, and on your servants, and on your people, so that you may know that there is no one like me in all the earth. 15 For now I could have reached out my hand, and struck you and your people with disease, and you would have been cut off from the earth. 16 But for this reason I have raised you up, to show you my power, and so that my name may be declared throughout all the earth. 17 You are still exalting yourself against my people and will not let them go. 18 Look, tomorrow about this time I will cause it to rain very severe hail, such as has not been in Egypt since the day it was founded until now. 19 Now therefore send, gather your cattle and all that you have in the field, [for] hail shall fall on every person and animal left in the field and not brought home, and they shall die’” And Moses and Aaron went in in front of Pharaoh and said to him: “Shema says this, ‘Let my people go so that he may serve me, for this time I will send all my plagues on your heart, and on your servants, and on your people so that you may know that there is no one like me in all the earth. For now I could have reached out my hand, and struck you and your people with disease, and you would have been cut off from the earth. But for this reason I have raised you up, to show you my power, and so that my name may be declared throughout all the earth. You are still exalting yourself against my people and will not let them go. Look, tomorrow about this time I will cause it to rain very severe hail, such as has not been in Egypt since the day it was founded until now. Now therefore send, gather your cattle and all that you have in the field, [for] hail shall fall on every person and animal left in the field and not brought home, and they shall die.’”
20 Those among Pharaoh’s servants who feared the word of Shema made their servants and their cattle flee into the houses, 21 but anyone who disregarded the word of Shema left his servants and his cattle in the field.
22 And Shema said to Moses: “Stretch out your hand toward heaven, so that there may be hail in all the land of Egypt, on people, and on animals, and on every plant of the field, throughout the land of Egypt.” 23 And Moses stretched out his staff toward heaven; and Shema sent thunder and hail, and fire ran down to the earth, and Shema caused it to hail on the land of Egypt. 24 So there was hail, and fire flashing up amid the hail, very severe, such as had not been in Egypt since it became a nation. 25 And the hail struck in the land of Egypt all that was in the field, both people and animals; and the hail struck every plant of the field, and broke every tree of the field. 26 Only in the land of Goshen, where the children of Israel [were], was there no hail.
27 And Pharaoh sent, and called for Moses and Aaron, and said to them: “I have sinned this time; Shema is righteous, and I and my people are wicked. 28 Pray to Shema for this mighty thunder and hail to stop, and I will let you go, and you shall no longer stay.” 29 And Moses said to him: “As soon as I have gone out of the city, I will spread out my hands to Shema, and the thunder shall stop, and there shall be no more hail, so that you may know that the earth is Shema’s. 30 But as for you and your servants, I know that you will not yet fear the Lord Shema.” 31 And the flax and the barley were ruined, for the barley was forming heads of grain, and the flax was in bloom. 32 But the wheat and the spelt were not ruined, for they ripen late. 33 And Moses went out of the city from Pharaoh, and spread out his hands to Shema, and the thunder and hail stopped, and the rain was not poured on the earth. 34 And when Pharaoh saw that the hail, and the rain, and the thunder had stopped, he sinned even more, and hardened his heart, he and his servants. 35 And the heart of Pharaoh was hardened, and he did not let the children of Israel go, as Shema had spoken by Moses.
1 And Shema said to Moses: “Go in to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart, and the heart of his servants, so that I might show these signs of mine among them, 2 and so that you may tell your son, and your grandson, what I have done to Egypt, and my signs which I have done among them, so that you may know that I am Shema your God. And say to Pharaoh, ‘Shema says this, the God of the Hebrews, ‘How long will you refuse to humble yourself before me? Let my people go so that he may serve me. For if you refuse to let my people go, look, tomorrow I will bring locusts into your country, and they shall cover the face of the earth, so that no one shall be able to see the earth. And they shall eat what has survived and remains to you after the hail, and shall eat every plant of the land, and all the fruit of the trees, which grows for you out of the field. And your houses shall be filled, and the houses of all your servants, and the houses of all the Egyptians, as neither your fathers nor your grandfathers have seen from the day they first lived on earth until today.’”
3 And Moses and Aaron went in to Pharaoh, and said to him: “Shema says this, the God of the Hebrews, ‘How long will you refuse to humble yourself before me? Let my people go so that he may serve me. 4 For if you refuse to let my people go, look, tomorrow I will bring locusts into your country, 5 and they shall cover the face of the earth, so that no one shall be able to see the earth. And they shall eat what has survived and remains to you after the hail, and shall eat every plant of the land, and all the fruit of the trees which grows for you out of the field. 6 And your houses shall be filled, and the houses of all your servants, and the houses of all the Egyptians, as neither your fathers nor your grandfathers have seen from the day they first lived on earth until today.’” And he turned, and went out from Pharaoh.
7 And Pharaoh’s servants said to him: “How long shall this man be a trap to us? Let the men go, so that they may serve Shema their God. Do you not yet know that Egypt is destroyed?” 8 And he brought Moses and Aaron again to Pharaoh, and he said to them: “Go, serve Shema your God. But who shall go?” 9 And Moses said: “We will go with our young and with our old; with our sons and with our daughters, we will go with our flocks and with our herds, for we must hold a festival to Shema.” 10 And he said to them: “May Shema be with you, as I will let you go, and your little ones. Look, evil is right in front of you. 11 Therefore, go now, you [that are] men, and serve Shema, for that is what you desire.” And they drove them out from Pharaoh’s presence.
12 And Shema said to Moses: “Stretch out your hand over the land of Egypt for the locusts so that they may come up on the land of Egypt, and eat every plant, and all the fruit of the trees that the hail has left.” 13 And Moses stretched out his hand over the land of Egypt, and Shema brought an east wind on the land all that day, and all the night, [and] when it was morning, the east wind brought the locusts. 14 And the locusts went up over all the land of Egypt, and rested in the whole country of Egypt. [They were] very severe; before them there had never been locusts like them, and there shall never be again. 15 For they covered the face of the whole earth, so that the land was darkened, and they ate every plant of the land, and all the fruit of the trees, which the hail had left, so nothing green remained, either tree or plant of the field, through all the land of Egypt. 16 Then Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron in a hurry, and he said: “I have sinned against Shema your God, and against you. 17 Now therefore please forgive my sin only this once, [and] pray to Shema your God so that he may take just this deadly plague away from me.” 18 And he went out from Pharaoh, and prayed to Shema. 19 And Shema turned the wind into an extremely strong west wind, which took up the locusts, and drove them into the sea of Sof. Not one locust remained in all the country of Egypt. 20 But Shema hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he did not let the children of Israel go.
21 And Shema said to Moses: “Stretch out your hand toward heaven so that there may be darkness over the land of Egypt, a darkness which may be felt.” 22 And Moses stretched out his hand toward heaven, and there was a thick darkness in all the land of Egypt three days. 23 They did not see one another, and no one got up from his place for three days. But all the children of Israel had light in their homes. 24 And Pharaoh called Moses and Aaron, and said: “Go serve Shema; only let your flocks and your herds remain behind. Let your little ones also go with you.” 25 And Moses said: “You must also give us sacrifices and burned offerings, so that we may sacrifice to Shema our God. 26 Our cattle also shall go with us. There shall not be a hoof left behind, for we must take some of it to serve Shema our God, and we do not know what we must use to serve Shema until we arrive there.” 27 But Shema hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he would not let them go. 28 And Pharaoh said to him: “Get away from me; be careful. Do not see my face again, for on the day you see my face you shall die.” 29 And Moses said: “You have spoken well. I will never see your face again.”
1 And Shema said to Moses: “I will bring one more plague on Pharaoh, and on Egypt, and afterward he will let you go from here. When he lets you go, he shall surely drive you all out of here. 2 Speak now so that they hear the people, and let every man ask his neighbor, and every woman her neighbor, for silver vessels, and gold vessels, and clothing. 3 And I will give this people favor in the sight of the Egyptians so that they let them have what they asked. And about midnight I will go out into the middle of the land of Egypt. And all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sits on his throne, to the firstborn of the female servant who works behind the mill, and to the firstborn of all cattle. And there shall be a great cry in Egypt, such as there has never been, nor shall be again. But against any of the children of Israel, whether person or animal, not a dog shall growl, so that you may know that Shema makes a distinction between the Egyptians and Israel.” And also the man Moses was very highly regarded in the land of Egypt, in the sight of Pharaoh’s servants, and in the sight of the people.
4 And Moses said to Pharaoh: “Shema says this, ‘Israel is my son, my firstborn, and I have said to you, ‘Let my son go, so that he may serve me. And you have refused to let him go. Look, Shema will kill your son, your firstborn.’” And Moses said: “Shema says this, ‘About midnight I will go out into the middle of the land of Egypt. 5 And all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sits on his throne, to the firstborn of the female servant who works behind the mill, and to the firstborn of all cattle. 6 And there shall be a great cry in Egypt, such as there has never been, nor shall be again. 7 But against any of the children of Israel, whether person or animal, not a dog shall growl, so that you may know that Shema makes a distinction between the Egyptians and Israel. 8 And all these servants of yours shall come down to me, and bow down to me, saying, ‘Get out, you and all the people that follow you,’ and after that I will go out.” And he went out from Pharaoh in fierce anger.
9 And Shema said to Moses: “Pharaoh will not listen to you so that my wonders may be multiplied in the land of Egypt.” 10 And Moses and Aaron did all these wonders in front of Pharaoh, and Shema hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he did not let the children of Israel go out of his land.
1 And Shema spoke to Moses and Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying: 2 “This month [shall be] the beginning of months for you; it shall be the first month of the year to you. 3 Speak now to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying, ‘On the tenth day of this month each man shall take a lamb, according to their fathers’ houses, a lamb for a household. 4 And if the household is too small for a lamb, then he and his neighbor next to his house shall take one according to the number of persons; you shall count them for the lamb according to how much each person eats. 5 Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male a year old; you shall take it from the sheep, or from the goats. 6 And you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of the same month, and the whole assembly of the congregation of the children of Israel shall kill it at twilight. 7 And they shall take some of the blood, and put it on the two doorposts and on the lintel, on the houses where they shall eat it. 8 And they shall eat the flesh that night, roasted on the fire, they shall eat it with unleavened bread and bitter herbs. 9 Do not eat of it raw or boiled at all with water, but roasted with fire; its head with its legs and with its inner parts. 10 And you shall let nothing of it remain until the morning, and anything that remains until the morning you shall burn with fire. 11 And you shall eat it this way: with your clothes fastened around your waist, your shoes on your feet, and your staffs in your hands; and you shall eat it in a hurry. It is Shema’s Passover. 12 For I will go through the land of Egypt that night, and will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both people and animals. And against all the gods of Egypt I will carry out judgments. I am Shema.
13 And the blood shall be a sign for you on the houses where you are; and when I see the blood, I will pass over you, and the plague shall not be on you to destroy [you], when I strike the land of Egypt. 14 And this day shall be a day of remembrance for you, and you shall celebrate it as a festival to Shema; throughout your generations you shall observe it as a statute forever. 15 Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread. But on the first day you shall remove leaven from your houses, for if anyone eats leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that person shall be cut off from Israel. 16 And on the first day you shall have a sacred assembly, and on the seventh day a sacred assembly. No kind of work shall be done on those days, except preparing what each person must eat; only that may be done by you. 17 And you shall observe the commandment, for on this very day I have brought your organized groups out of the land of Egypt. Therefore you shall observe and celebrate this day throughout your generations by a statute forever. 18 In the first [month], on the fourteenth day of the month at evening, you shall eat unleavened bread, until the twenty-first day of the month at evening. 19 For seven days no leaven shall be found in your houses, for if anyone eats anything leavened, that person shall be cut off from the congregation of Israel, whether he is a foreign resident or a native of the land. 20 You shall eat nothing leavened; in all your homes you shall eat unleavened bread.”
21 Then Moses called for all the elders of Israel, and said to them: “Choose and take lambs according to your families, and kill the Passover [lamb]. 22 And you shall take a bunch of hyssop, and dip it in the blood that is in the basin, and sprinkle on the lintel and on the two doorposts from the blood that is in the basin; and none of you shall go out of the door of his house until the morning. 23 For Shema will pass through to strike the Egyptians, and when he sees the blood on the lintel and on the two doorposts, Shema will pass over the door, and will not allow the destroyer to come in to your houses to strike [you]. 24 And you shall observe this thing as a rule for you and to your sons forever. 25 And when you come to the land which Shema will give you, as he has promised, you shall keep this service in this month. 26 And when your children say to you, ‘What do you mean by this service?’ 27 you shall say, ‘It is the sacrifice of Shema’s Passover, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when he struck the Egyptians, and saved our houses.’” And the people bowed down and worshiped. 28 And the children of Israel went and did as Shema had commanded Moses and Aaron; that is what they did.
29 And at midnight Shema struck down all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of Pharaoh that sat on his throne to the firstborn of the captive that was in the dungeon, and all the firstborn of cattle. 30 And Pharaoh got up in the night, he and all his servants, and all the Egyptians, and there was a great cry in Egypt, for there was no house without someone dead. 31 And he called for Moses and Aaron by night, and said: “Get up, go out from among my people, both you and the children of Israel; and go, serve Shema, as you have said. 32 Take both your flocks and your herds, as you have said, and leave; and bless me also.” 33 And the Egyptians pressed the people to leave the land quickly; for they said: “We are all dead men.” 34 And the people took their dough before it was leavened, with their kneading bowls wrapped in their clothes on their shoulders. 35 And the children of Israel did according to the words of Moses, and they asked the Egyptians for vessels of silver, and vessels of gold, and clothing. 36 And Shema gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians, so that they let them have what they asked. In this way they plundered the Egyptians.
37 And the children of Israel traveled from Rameses to Sukkoth, about six hundred thousand men on foot, besides children. 38 And a mixed crowd went up also with them, and flocks, and herds, a great many cattle. 39 And they baked unleavened cakes of the dough, which they brought out of Egypt, for it was not leavened, because the Egyptians drove them out, and they could not delay, and they had not prepared any provisions for themselves. 40 Now the time that the children of Israel and their ancestors lived in the land of Canaan and in the land of Egypt was four hundred and thirty years. 41 And at the end of four hundred and thirty years, on that very day, all the organized groups of Shema went out from the land of Egypt 42 at night. It is a night to be carefully observed for Shema for bringing them out from the land of Egypt. This is that night of Shema, to be carefully observed by all the children of Israel throughout their generations.
43 And Shema said to Moses and to Aaron: “This is the rule of the Passover: no foreigner shall eat of it; 44 but every man’s servant that is bought for his money, when you have circumcised him, then he shall eat of it. 45 A foreign resident and a hired servant shall not eat of it. 46 It shall be eaten in one house; you shall not take any of the flesh outside of the house; and you shall not break a bone of it. 47 All the congregation of Israel shall keep it. 48 And when a foreigner lives among you and wants to keep the Passover to Shema, let all his males be circumcised, and then let him come near and keep it; and he shall be like a native of the land, but no uncircumcised person shall eat of it. 49 The same law shall apply to the native and to the foreigner who lives among you. 50 And all the children of Israel did as Shema commanded Moses and Aaron; that is what they did. 51 And on that very day Shema did bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt in their organized groups.
1 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: 2 “Set apart as holy to me all the firstborn, whatever is the first to open the womb among the children of Israel, both human and animal; it is mine.” 3 And Moses said to the people: “Remember this day, in which you came out from the land of Egypt, out of slavery, for by a strong hand Shema brought you out from this place. No leavened bread shall be eaten 4 this day. And you go out in the month of the ears of grain.
5 And when Shema your God brings you into the land of the Canaanite, the Hittite, and the Amorite, and the Perizzite, and the Girgashite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite, which he swore to your ancestors to give you, a land flowing with milk and honey, you shall keep this service in this month. 6 Six days you shall eat unleavened bread, and on the seventh day there shall be a festival to Shema; 7 unleavened bread shall be eaten. Throughout the seven days no leavened bread shall be seen among you, and no leaven shall be seen with you in all your territory. 8 And you shall tell your son on that day, saying, ‘It is because of what Shema did for me when I came out of Egypt.’ 9 And they shall be a sign for you on your hands, and a reminder between your eyes, so that the law of Shema may be in your mouth, for Shema brought you with a strong hand out of Egypt. 10 You shall therefore keep this rule at its appointed time from year to year.
11 And when Shema your God brings you into the land of the Canaanite, as he swore to you and to your ancestors, and gives it to you, 12 you shall set apart to Shema all that opens the womb, and every firstborn animal you have; the males shall be Shema’s. 13 And you shall redeem every firstborn donkey with a lamb; and if you will not redeem it, then you shall break its neck; and you shall redeem every human firstborn among your sons. 14 And when your son asks you in the future, saying, ‘What is this?’ you shall say to him, ‘With a strong hand Shema brought us out from Egypt, from slavery. 15 And when Pharaoh stubbornly refused to let us go, Shema killed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both human firstborn, and animal firstborn; therefore I sacrifice to Shema every male that first opens the womb, but I redeem every human firstborn among my sons. 16 And it shall be a sign for you on your hands, and for bands worn on the forehead between your eyes, for with a strong hand Shema brought you out of Egypt.”
17 And when Pharaoh had let the people go, God did not lead them along the way of the land of the Philistines, although that was near; for God said, “The people might change their minds when they see war, and return to Egypt.” 18 But God led the people around, by the way of the wilderness of the sea of Sof, and the children of Israel went up armed out of the land of Egypt. 19 And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him, for Joseph had made the children of Israel swear a solemn oath, saying, “God will surely come to your aid and you shall carry up my bones away from here with you.” 20 And they set out from Sukkoth, and camped in Etham, which is on the edge of the wilderness. 21 And Shema went ahead of them by day in a pillar of cloud, to lead them along the way, and by night in a pillar of fire, to give them light, so that they might go by day and by night. 22 The pillar of cloud by day, and the pillar of fire by night did not leave the place in front of the people.
1 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: 2 “Speak to the children of Israel, to turn back and camp in front of Pi Hahiroth, between Migdol and the sea; in front of Baal Zephon, you shall camp in front of it by the sea. 3 And Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel, ‘They are trapped in the land; the wilderness has closed them in.’ 4 And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, and he will pursue them, and I will get glory over Pharaoh, and over all his army, and the Egyptians shall know that I am Shema.” And they did so. 5 And when the king of Egypt was told that the people fled, Pharaoh and his servants changed their attitude toward the people, and they said: “What is this we have done, that we have released Israel from serving us?” 6 And he prepared his chariot, and took his people with him. 7 And he took six hundred chosen chariots, and all the chariots of Egypt, with officers over all of them. 8 And Shema hardened the heart of Pharaoh king of Egypt, and he pursued the children of Israel, for the children of Israel went out boldly. 9 And the Egyptians pursued them, all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh, and his horsemen, and his armies, and overtook them camped by the sea, beside Pi Hahiroth, in front of Baal Zephon. 10 And Pharaoh came near. And the children of Israel looked up, and looked, and, look, the Egyptians were marching after them. So they were very afraid, and the children of Israel cried out to Shema.
11 And they said to Moses: “Is it because there were no graves in Egypt that you have taken us away to die in the wilderness? What have you done to us, bringing us out of Egypt? 12 Look, this is what we told you in Egypt, saying, ‘Please leave us alone, so that we may serve the Egyptians!’ For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.” 13 And Moses said to the people: “Do not fear, stand still, and see the salvation of Shema, which he will work for you today, for as you have seen the Egyptians today, you shall never see them. 14 Shema will fight for you, and you shall remain silent.”
15 And Shema said to Moses: “Why do you cry to me? Tell the children of Israel to go forward. 16 And lift up your staff, and stretch out your hand over the sea and divide it. And the children of Israel shall go into the middle of the sea on dry ground. 17 And I, look, I will harden the hearts of the Egyptians, and they shall go in after them, and I will get glory over Pharaoh, and over all his army, over his chariots, and over his horsemen. 18 And all the Egyptians shall know that I am Shema, when I have gained glory over Pharaoh, and over all his army, over his chariots, and over his horsemen.”
19 And the angel of God, who went ahead of the camp of Israel, moved and went behind them. And the pillar of cloud moved from in front of them, and stood behind them. 20 And it came between the camp of Egypt and the camp of Israel; and there was the dark cloud, yet it gave light by night; and the one did not come near the other all night. 21 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and Shema drove the sea back by a strong east wind all night, and made the sea dry land, and the waters were divided. 22 And the children of Israel went into the middle of the sea on the dry ground, with the waters a wall to them on their right hand and on their left. 23 And the Egyptians pursued, and went in after them into the middle of the sea, all Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots, and his horsemen. 24 And in the morning watch Shema in the pillar of fire and of cloud looked down on the Egyptian army, and threw the Egyptian army into a panic. 25 And he bound the commanders of his chariots, and he drove them with glory. And the Egyptians said: “Let us flee from Israel, for Shema is the one who fights for them against the Egyptians.”
26 And Shema said to Moses: “Stretch out your hand over the sea, so that the waters may come back on the Egyptians, on their chariots, and on their horsemen.” 27 And Moses stretched out his hand over the sea, and the sea returned to its strength when the morning appeared. And the Egyptians set out against it. And Shema overthrew the Egyptians into the middle of the sea. 28 And the waters returned, and covered the chariots, and the horsemen, all the army of Pharaoh that went in after them into the sea; not one of them remained. 29 But the children of Israel walked on dry land in the middle of the sea, the waters being a wall to them on their right hand, and on their left. 30 Thus Shema saved Israel that day from the power of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians dead on the seashore. 31 And Israel saw the great work that Shema did to the Egyptians, and the people feared Shema and they believed in Shema, and in his servant Moses.
1 Then Moses and the children of Israel sang this song to Shema, and spoke, saying: “Praise Shema, for he has thrown into the sea a powerful nation, its horse and its rider. 2 [Shema] is my strength and glory, and he has become my salvation. This is my God, and I will praise him, my father’s God, and I will honor him. 3 Shema is mighty in war, Shema is his name. 4 He threw Pharaoh’s chariot and his armies into the sea, and his chosen captains drowned in the sea of Sof. 5 The deep waters cover them, they went down into the depths like a stone. 6 Your right hand, Shema, is glorious in power, Your right hand, Shema, shatters the enemy. 7 And in your great majesty you overthrow your enemies, you send out your anger, it consumes them like stubble. 8 And with the blast of your anger the waters were piled up, the descending [waters] stood upright as a heap, the deep waters became solid in the heart of the sea. 9 The enemy said, ‘I will pursue, I will overtake, I will divide the plunder, my desire shall be satisfied by it, I will draw my sword, my hand shall inherit it.’ 10 You blew with your wind, the sea covered them, they sank like lead in the mighty waters. 11 Who is like you, among the gods, Shema? Who is like you, glorious in holiness, awesome in praises, doing wonders? 12 You stretched out your right hand, the earth swallowed them. 13 In your faithful love you have led the people that you have redeemed, you have assigned them in your strength to your holy home. 14 The peoples have heard, and they tremble, anguish has seized the inhabitants of Philistia. 15 Then the chiefs of Edom were terrified, the mighty men of Moab, trembling seizes them, all the inhabitants of Canaan melt away. 16 Terror and dread fall on them, and by the greatness of your arm they are as still as a stone, until your people pass over, Shema, until the people that you have purchased pass over. 17 You will bring them in, and plant them in the mountain of your inheritance, a place for you to live in. Shema, you have made a sanctuary, Lord, establish it with your hand. 18 Shema shall rule forever and ever. 19 For the horses of Pharaoh went in with his chariots and with his horsemen into the sea, and Shema brought back the waters of the sea on them. But the children of Israel walked on dry ground in the middle of the sea.” 20 And Miriam the female prophet, the sister of Aaron, took a tambourine in her hand, and all the women went out after her with tambourines and with dances. 21 And Miriam answered them: “Praise Shema, for he has thrown a powerful nation, its horse and its rider into the sea.”
22 And Moses led Israel onward from the sea of Sof, and he took him out into the wilderness of Shur, and they traveled for three days in the wilderness, and found no water. 23 And when they came to Marah, they could not drink of the waters of Marah, for they were bitter; therefore it was named Marah. 24 And the people complained against Moses, saying: “What shall we drink?” 25 And Moses cried to Shema. And Shema showed him a tree, and he threw [it] into the waters, and the waters were made sweet. There he gave them a statute and a rule, and there he tested them. 26 And he said: “If you will diligently listen to the voice of Shema your God, and will do what is right in his eyes, and will listen to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, I will put none of the diseases on you, which I have put on the Egyptians, for I am Shema your healer.
27 And they came to Elim, and there were twelve springs of water in Elim, and seventy palm trees, and they camped there by the waters.
1 And they set out from Elim, and all the congregation of the children of Israel came to the wilderness of Sin, which is between Elim and Sinai, on the fifteenth day of the second month after their departure from the land of Egypt. 2 And the whole congregation of the children of Israel complained against Moses and against Aaron in the wilderness. 3 And the children of Israel said to them: “If only we had died by the hand of Shema in the land of Egypt, when we sat by the meat pots, when we ate bread until we were full, for you have brought us out into this wilderness, to kill this whole assembly with hunger.”
4 Then Shema said to Moses: “Look, I will cause it to rain bread from heaven for you; and the people shall go out and gather a day’s portion every day, so that I may test them, whether they will follow my laws or not. 5 And on the sixth day they shall prepare what they bring in, and it shall be twice as much as they gather daily.” 6 And Moses and Aaron said to all the children of Israel: “At evening, then you shall know that Shema has brought you out from the land of Egypt. 7 And in the morning, then you shall see the glory of Shema, for he has heard your complaints against Shema, and who are we, that you complain against us?” 8 And Moses said: “When Shema gives you meat to eat in the evening, and bread in the morning until you are full, because Shema heard the complaints you make against him—who are we? Your complaints are not against us, but against Shema.” 9 And Moses said to Aaron: “Say to all the congregation of the children of Israel, ‘Come into the presence of Shema for he has heard your complaints.’” 10 And as Aaron spoke to the whole congregation of the children of Israel, they looked toward the wilderness, and, look, the glory of Shema appeared in the cloud.
11 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: 12 “I have heard the complaints of the children of Israel. Speak to them, saying ‘At twilight you shall eat meat, and in the morning you shall be filled with bread, and you shall know that I am Shema your God.’” 13 And in the evening quails came up, and covered the camp and in the morning the dew lay around the camp. 14 And when the dew that had settled evaporated, look, there was a fine, flake-like thing on the surface of the wilderness, fine as frost on the ground. 15 And when the children of Israel saw [it], they said to one another: “What is it?” For they did not know what it was. And Moses said to them: “It is the bread which Shema has given you to eat. 16 This is the thing which Shema has commanded, ‘Each man shall gather as much of it as he eats, an omer per person; you shall take it according [to the] number of people you have, each man for those in his tent.’” 17 And the children of Israel did so, and gathered, some more, some less. 18 And when they measured [it] with an omer, whoever gathered much had nothing left over, and whoever gathered little had no shortage; each man gathered as much as he ate. 19 And Moses said to them: “No one shall leave any of it until the morning.” 20 But they did not listen to Moses. Some left some of it until the morning, and it bred worms and became foul, and Moses was angry with them. 21 And they gathered it morning by morning, each man as much as he ate, and when the sun grew hot, it melted.
22 And on the sixth day they gathered twice as much bread, two omers for each one, and all the leaders of the congregation came and told Moses. 23 And he said to them: “This is what Shema has spoken, ‘Tomorrow is a day of complete rest, a holy Sabbath to Shema. Bake what you will bake, and boil what you will boil, and set aside all that is left over to be kept until the morning.’” 24 And they laid it aside until the morning, as Moses commanded, and it did not become foul, and there was no worm in it. 25 And Moses said: “Eat it today, for today is a Sabbath to Shema, today you will not find [it] in the field. 26 Six days you shall gather it, but on the seventh day, [which is] the Sabbath, there will be none.” 27 And on the seventh day some of the people went out to gather, and they found none.
28 And Shema said to Moses: “How long do you refuse to keep my commandments and my laws? 29 See! For Shema has given you the Sabbath; therefore on the sixth day he gives you bread for two days. Let every man remain in his place, and let no one go out of his place on the day of Sabbath.” 30 So the people rested on the seventh day. 31 And the house of Israel named it Manna, and it was like peeled seed, white, and the taste of it was like wafers of honey. 32 And Moses said: “This is the thing which Shema has commanded, ‘Fill up an omer of it to be kept throughout your generations, so that they may see the bread with which I fed you in the wilderness, when I brought you out from the land of Egypt.’” 33 And Moses said to Aaron: “Take a pot, and put an omer of manna in it, and store it in the presence of Shema, to be kept throughout your generations.” 34 As Shema commanded Moses, so Aaron stored it in front of the testimony, to be kept. 35 And the children of Israel ate the manna forty years, until they came to an inhabited land; they ate the manna, until they came to the borders of the land of Canaan. 36 Now an omer is the tenth part of an ephah.
1 And all the congregation of the children of Israel traveled from the wilderness of Sin, in stages, according to [the commandment of] Shema, and camped in Rephidim. And there [was] no water for the people to drink. 2 Therefore the people quarreled with Moses, and said: “Give us water so that we may drink.” And Moses said to them: “Why do you quarrel with me and why do you test Shema?” 3 And the people were thirsty there for water, and the people complained against Moses, and they said: “Why have you brought us up out from Egypt, to kill us and our children and our cattle with thirst?” 4 And Moses cried to Shema, saying: “What shall I do with this people? They are almost ready to stone me.”
5 And Shema said to Moses: “Go ahead of the people, and take with you some of the elders of Israel, and as for your staff, with which you struck the river, you shall take [it] in your hand, and go. 6 Look, I will stand in front of you there on the rock in Horeb, and you shall strike the rock, and water shall come out of it, so that the people may drink.” And Moses did so in front of the elders of Israel. 7 And he named the place Massah and Meribah, because of the quarreling of the children of Israel, and because they tested Shema, saying: “Is Shema among us or not?”
8 Then Amalek came and fought with Israel in Rephidim. 9 And Moses said to Joshua: “Choose men for us, and go out, fight with Amalek. Tomorrow I will stand on the top of the hill with the staff of God in my hand.” 10 So Joshua did as Moses had said to him, and fought with Amalek. And Moses and Aaron, and Hur went up to the top of the hill. 11 And when Moses held up his hands, Israel had the advantage, and when he lowered his hands, Amalek had the advantage. 12 But Moses’s hands were tired, so they took a stone, and put it under him, and he sat on it. And Aaron and Hur held up his hands, one on each side. And his hands were steady until the sun went down. 13 And Joshua defeated Amalek and his people and he struck them with the edge of the sword.
14 And Shema said to Moses: “Write this as a reminder in a book, and recite it to Joshua, that I will completely erase the memory of Amalek from under heaven.” 15 And Moses built an altar, and named it Shema my banner, 16 for he said: “A hand on the throne! Shema [will] be at war with Amalek from generation to generation.
1 Now Jethro, the priest of Midian, Moses’s father-in-law, heard of all that God had done for Moses, and for Israel his people, how Shema had brought Israel out of Egypt. 2 And Jethro, Moses’s father-in-law, took Zipporah, Moses’s wife, after he had sent her away, 3 and her two sons of whom the name of the one [was] Gershom, for he said: “I have been a foreign resident in a foreign land,” 4 and the name of the other Eliezer, for [he said]: “The God of my father was my help, and rescued me from the sword of Pharaoh.” 5 And Jethro, Moses’s father-in-law, came with his sons and his wife to Moses into the wilderness where he was camped, at the mountain of God. 6 And it was said to Moses: “Look, your father-in-law Jethro, is coming to you, and your wife, and her two sons with her.” 7 And Moses went out to meet his father-in-law, and [Jethro] bowed down to Moses, and kissed him, and they asked how each other was doing, and he brought him into the tent.
8 And Moses told his father-in-law all that Shema had done to Pharaoh and to the Egyptians for Israel’s sake, all the hardship they had experienced on the way, and [how] Shema rescued them. 9 And Jethro was glad about all the goodness which Shema had done to Israel, because he had rescued them from the power of the Egyptians. 10 And Jethro said: “Blessed be Shema, who has rescued you from the power of the Egyptians, and from the power of Pharaoh, who has rescued the people from the power of the Egyptians. 11 Now I know that Shema is greater than all gods, for in the matter in which they acted arrogantly, [he was] above them.” 12 And Jethro, Moses’s father-in-law, took a burned offering and sacrifices for God, and Aaron came, and some of the elders of Israel, to eat bread with Moses’s father-in-law in the presence of God.
13 And on the next day, Moses sat to judge the people. And the people stood around Moses from the morning until evening. 14 And when Moses’s father-in-law saw all that he was doing for the people, he said: “What is this thing that you are doing for the people? Why do you sit alone, and all the people stand around you from morning until evening?” 15 And Moses said to his father-in-law: “Because the people come to me to seek guidance from God. 16 When they have a dispute, they come to me and I judge between a man and his neighbor, and I teach them the statutes of God, and his laws.”
17 And Moses’s father-in-law said to him: “The thing that you are doing is not good. 18 You will surely wear yourselves out, both you, and these people who are with you, for the task is too difficult for you. You are not able to perform it alone. 19 Listen now to my voice, I will give you advice, and may God be with you. You shall represent the people in the presence of God, and bring the cases to God. 20 And you shall teach them the statutes and the law, and shall show them how they must live, and the work that they must do. 21 You shall also choose capable men from all the people, men who fear God, who are truthful, and who hate unjust gain, and place [such] men over them, [to be] rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens. 22 And let them judge the people at all times, and they shall bring every major case to you, but they shall judge every minor case themselves, so it will be easier for you, and they shall carry [the burden] with you. 23 If you do this thing, and God commands you to do so, then you will be able to endure, and all these people also will go to their place in peace.” 24 So Moses listened to the voice of his father-in-law, and did all that he had said. And Moses said to the people: “I am not able to carry your burdens alone; Shema your God has multiplied you, and look, you are today as numerous as the stars of heaven. Shema, the God of your ancestors, will make you a thousand times as many as you are, and bless you, as he has promised you! How can I alone bear your trouble, your burden, and your disputes? Take wise, and understanding, and experienced men, according to your tribes, and I will make them heads over you.” And they answered, and said: “What you have spoken of doing is good.” And he took the heads of their tribes, wise and experienced men,
25 and he made them heads over them, rulers of thousands, and rulers of hundreds, rulers of fifties, and rulers of tens, and officers, according to their tribes. And he instructed their judges, saying: “Hear [the cases] between your brothers, and judge fairly between a man and his brother, and the foreign resident that is with him. You shall not be partial in judgment. You shall hear the small and the great alike. You shall not be afraid of anyone, for the judgment is God’s. And you shall bring me the case that is too hard for you, and I will hear it.” And he commanded them all the things which they should do. 26 And they judged the people at all times; they brought the major cases to Moses, but judged every minor case themselves. 27 And Moses let his father-in-law leave, and he went his way into his own land.
1 In the third month after the children of Israel had gone out of the land of Egypt, the same day they came into the wilderness of Sinai. 2 And they set out from Rephidim, and came to the wilderness of Sinai, and they camped in the wilderness; and there Israel camped in front of the mountain. 3 And Moses went up to God, and Shema called to him out of the mountain, saying: “You shall say this to the house of Jacob, and tell the children of Israel, 4 ‘You have seen what I did to the Egyptians, and [how] I carried you on eagles’ wings, and brought you to myself. 5 Now therefore, if you will indeed obey my voice and keep my covenant, then you shall be my own possession from among all peoples, for all the earth is mine. 6 And you shall be for me a kingdom of priests, and a nation of holiness.’ These are the words which you shall speak to the children of Israel.” 7 And Moses came and called for the elders of the people, and presented to them all these words which Shema had commanded him. 8 And all the people answered together, and said: “All that Shema has spoken we will do.” And Moses reported the words of the people to Shema. 9 And Shema said to Moses: “Look, I come to you in the thick cloud, so that the people may hear when I speak with you, and may also believe you forever.” And Moses told the words of the people to Shema.
10 And Shema said to Moses: “Go to the people, and consecrate them today and tomorrow, and let them wash their clothes, 11 and be ready by the third day, for on the third day Shema will come down in front of all the people to Mount Sinai. 12 And you shall set boundaries around the mountain, and say to the people, ‘Be careful not to go up into the mountain, or touch the border of it. Whoever touches the mountain shall certainly be put to death. 13 No hand shall touch him, but he shall surely be stoned or shot; whether animal or person, he shall not live. When the trumpet sounds a long blast, they shall come up to the mountain.” 14 And Moses went down from the mountain to the people, and consecrated the people, and they washed their clothes. 15 And he said to the people: “Be ready by the third day; do not go near a woman.”
16 And on the third day, when it was morning, there were thunder and lightning, and a thick cloud on the mountain, and a very loud trumpet blast. And all the people that were in the camp trembled. 17 And Moses brought the people out from the camp to meet God. And they stood at the foot of the mountain. 18 And Mount Sinai, all of it, smoked, because Shema came down on it in fire. And the smoke from it rose like the smoke of a furnace, and the whole mountain trembled greatly. 19 And when the sound of the trumpet grew louder and louder, Moses spoke, and God answered him by the voice. 20 And Shema came down on Mount Sinai, to the top of the mountain. And Shema called Moses to the top of the mountain. And Moses went up.
21 And Shema said to Moses: “Go down. Warn the people, so that they do not break through to gaze at Shema and many of them die. 22 And let the priests also, that come near to Shema, consecrate themselves, so that Shema does not strike them.” 23 And Moses said to Shema: “The people cannot come up to Mount Sinai for you commanded us, saying, ‘Set boundaries around the mountain, and consecrate it.’” 24 And Shema said to him: “Go, get down and come back up with Aaron and the priests. But do not let the people break through to come up to Shema, so that he does not strike them. 25 So Moses went down from the mountain to the people, and spoke to them.
1 And God spoke all these words, saying: 2 “I am Shema your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt, out of slavery. 3 You shall have no other gods before me. 4 You shall not make for yourself a carved image, or any likeness [of anything] that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. 5 You shall not bow down to them, nor serve them, for I, Shema your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sins of their fathers, on the third and on the fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 and showing faithful love to thousands of those who love me and keep my commandments. 7 You shall not take the name of Shema your God in vain, for Shema will not consider anyone innocent who takes his name in vain.
8 Observe the Sabbath day, for it is holy. 9 Six days you shall labor, and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is a Sabbath to Shema your God. On it you shall not do any work: you, or your son, or your daughter, your male slave, or your female slave, [or] your cattle, or the foreigner who is within your cities, 11 for in six days Shema made heaven and earth, and the sea, and all that is in them, and rested on the seventh day. Therefore Shema blessed the Sabbath day, and made it holy.
12 Honor your father and your mother, so that your days may be long in the land which Shema your God gives you. 13 You shall not kill. 14 You shall not commit adultery. 15 You shall not steal. 16 You shall not bear false witness against your neighbor. 17 You shall not covet your neighbor’s house, and you shall not covet your neighbor’s wife, his field, his male slave, or his female slave, [or] his ox, or his donkey, or anything that is your neighbor’s. And when Shema your God brings you into the land of the Canaanite, which you are entering to take possession of it, you shall set up large stones, and plaster them with plaster. And you shall write on the stones all the words of this law. And when you have passed over the Jordan, you shall set up these stones, which I command you today, on [Mount] Ārgarizem. And there you shall build an altar to Shema your God, an altar of stones; you shall not raise any iron [tool] over them. You shall build an altar to Shema your God of uncut stones, and you shall offer burned offerings on it to Shema your God. And you shall sacrifice peace offerings, and shall eat there, and you shall rejoice in the presence of Shema your God. That mountain beyond the Jordan, beyond the road toward the sunset, in the land of the Canaanites who live in the Arabah, opposite Gilgal, beside Elon Moreh, opposite Shechem.”
18 And all the people heard the thunder, and the sound of the trumpet, and saw the lightning, and the mountain smoking. And when all the people saw [it], they trembled, and stood far away. 19 And they said to Moses: “Look, Shema our God has shown us his glory and his greatness, and we have heard his voice from the middle of the fire. We have seen this day that God does speak with man, and he lives. Now therefore why should we die? For this great fire will consume us. If we hear the voice of Shema our God any more, then we shall die. For who is there among all living people, that has heard the voice of the living God speaking from the middle of fire, as we have, and has still lived? Go near, and hear all that Shema our God will say, and you will speak to us all that Shema our God will speak to you, and we will hear and do it. But do not let God speak with us, so that we do not die.” 20 And Moses said to the people: “Do not fear, for God has come to test you, [and] so that you may keep the fear of him in mind and not sin.” 21 And the people stood far away, and Moses approached the thick darkness where God was. And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: “I have heard the voice of the words of this people, which they have spoken to you. Everything they have said is good. If only they had hearts like this, so that they would fear me, and keep my commandments always, so that things might go well for them, and with their children forever! I will raise them up a prophet from among their brothers, like you, and I will put my words in his mouth, and he shall speak to them all that I shall command him. And if anyone does not listen to the words he shall speak in my name, I will demand [it] from him. But the prophet who presumes to speak a word in my name which I have not commanded him to speak, or who speaks in the name of other gods, that same prophet shall die. And if you think to yourself, ‘How may the word which Shema has not spoken be known?’ When a prophet speaks in the name of Shema, if the word does not happen or come true, that is a word which Shema has not spoken; the prophet has spoken it arrogantly; you need not be afraid of him. Go say to them, ‘Return to your tents.’ But you, stand here by me, and I will speak to you all the commandment, the statutes, and the rules, which you shall teach them, so that they may do them in the land which I give them to possess.”
22 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: “You shall say to the children of Israel, ‘You yourselves have seen that I have talked with you from heaven. 23 You shall not make gods of silver [to be] with me, nor shall you make for yourselves gods of gold. 24 You shall make me an altar of earth, and shall sacrifice on it your burned offerings, and your peace offerings of your sheep and of your oxen in the place where I recorded my name; to that place I will come to you and I will bless you. 25 And if you make me an altar of stone, you shall not build it of cut stones; for if you lift up your tool over it, you have defiled it. 26 You shall not offer deceitfully on my altar, so that your nakedness is not exposed to it’”
1 These are the rules which you shall present to them: 2 If you buy a Hebrew slave, he shall serve you for six years, and in the seventh he shall go out free, without payment. 3 If he comes in by himself, he shall go out by himself; if he is married, then his wife shall go out with him. 4 If his master gives him a wife and she has sons or daughters, the wife and her children shall be his master’s, and he shall go out by himself. 5 If the servant plainly says, ‘I love my master, my wife, and my children; I will not go out free,’ 6 then his master shall bring him to God, and shall bring him to the door, or to the doorpost, and his master shall pierce his ear with an awl, and he shall serve him forever.
7 And if a man sells his daughter as a slave, she shall not go out as the male servants do. 8 If she does not please her master, who has not designated her, then he shall let her be redeemed; he shall have no right to sell her to a foreign people, because he has treated her deceitfully. 9 And if he designates her to his son, he shall treat her as a daughter. 10 And if he takes another [wife] for himself, he shall not reduce her food, her clothing, or her marital rights. 11 And if he does not do these three [things] to her, then she shall go out without payment, without money. 12 Anyone who strikes a man, so that he dies, shall surely be put to death. 13 And if a man did not lie in wait, but God delivered [him] into his hand, then I will appoint you a place to which he shall flee. 14 And if a man deliberately attacks his neighbor to kill him by deception, you shall take him from my altar, so that he may die. 15 Anyone who strikes his father, or his mother, shall certainly be put to death. 16 And anyone who kidnaps a man, and sells him, or if he is found in his possession, he shall surely be put to death. 17 And anyone who curses his father or his mother, shall surely be put to death.
18 And if men quarrel, and they strike each other, and the man does not die, but remains in bed, 19 if he rises again, and walks outside with his staff, then the man who struck him shall be cleared of guilt; only he shall pay [for] the loss of his time, and shall pay for his full recovery. 20 And if a man strikes his servant, or his female servant, and he dies under his hand, he shall surely be put to death. 21 However, if he survives a day or two, he shall not be put to death, for the slave is his property.
22 And if men fight, and hurt a pregnant woman, so that her child comes out, and [yet] no harm follows, he shall certainly be fined, as the woman’s husband shall demand of him, and he shall pay as [determined] by mediators. 23 But if any harm follows, then you shall give life for life, 24 eye for eye, tooth for tooth, hand for hand, foot for foot, 25 burning for burning, wound for wound, bruise for bruise. 26 And if a man strikes the eye of his slave, male or female, and destroys it, he shall let him go free because of his eye. 27 And if he knocks out the tooth of his slave, male or female, he shall let him go free because of his tooth.
28 And if an ox or any animal strikes a man or a woman to death, the animal shall certainly be stoned, and its flesh shall not be eaten, but the owner of the animal shall be cleared of guilt. 29 But if the animal has been [accustomed to] striking in the past, and his owner has been warned but has not restrained it, and it killed a man or a woman, the animal shall be stoned, and its owner also shall be put to death. 30 If ransom is imposed on him, then he shall give for the redemption of his life whatever is imposed on him. 31 If it strikes a son or a daughter, he shall be dealt with according to this ruling. 32 If the animal strikes a slave, male or female, their master shall be given thirty shekels of silver, and the animal shall be stoned.
33 And if a man opens a pit, or if a man digs a pit and not cover it, and an ox or an donkey or any animal falls into it, 34 the owner of the pit shall pay; he shall return money to its owner, and the dead [beast] shall be his.
35 And if one man’s ox or any animal of his hurts another man’s ox or any other animal belonging to that man so that it dies, then they shall sell the live one and divide the price of it, and they shall also divide the dead one. 36 Or if it is known that the animal has been [accustomed to] striking in the past, and its owner has not restrained it, he shall surely pay animal for animal, and the dead one shall be his own.
37 And if a man steals an ox or a sheep and kills it or sells it, he shall pay five oxen for an ox and four sheep for a sheep.
1 If the thief is found breaking in and one strikes him so that he dies, there shall be no bloodguilt for him. 2 If the sun has risen on him, there shall be bloodguilt for him; he shall surely pay. If he has nothing, then he shall be sold for his theft. 3 If the stolen animal is found alive in his possession, whether it is an ox, or an donkey, or a sheep, or any animal, he shall pay double [for] one.
4 And if a man causes a field or vineyard to be grazed over, and lets his animal loose, and it feeds in another [man’s] field, he shall surely make restitution from his field according to its yield, and if [the animal] grazes the whole field, he shall make restitution from the best of his own field and the best of his own vineyard. 5 If fire breaks out and catches in thorns so that the stacks of grain, or the standing grain, or the field are consumed, whoever started the fire shall surely make restitution.
6 And if a man delivers to his neighbor money or goods for safekeeping, and it is stolen out of the man’s house, then if the thief is found, he shall pay double [for] one. 7 And if the thief is not found, then the owner of the house shall come near to God [to see] whether he has not taken his neighbor’s goods. 8 For every matter of wrongdoing, [whether it is] for ox, for donkey, for sheep, for clothing, [or] for any kind of lost property, of which it is said ‘This is it,’ the case of both parties shall come before Shema; whoever God condemns shall pay double [for] one to his neighbor.
9 And if a man entrusts his neighbor with a donkey, or an ox, or a sheep, or any animal to keep, and it dies or is hurt or driven away, with no one seeing [it], 10 the oath of Shema shall be between them both, whether he has not taken his neighbor’s goods, and its owner shall accept it, and he shall not make restitution. 11 If it is stolen from him, he shall make restitution to its owner. 12 If it is torn apart, let him bring the evidence of what has been torn, and he shall not make restitution. 13 And if a man borrows [anything] from his neighbor, and it is hurt or dies, and its owner is not with it, he shall surely make restitution. 14 If its owner is with it, he shall not make restitution; if it is rented, its rental fee covers it.
15 And if a man seduces a virgin who is not engaged to be married and lies with her, he shall surely pay a dowry for her [to be] his wife. 16 And if her father completely refuses to give her to him, he shall pay money according to the dowry of virgins. 17 A sorceress shall not live. 18 Whoever lies with a animal shall surely be put to death. 19 Anyone who sacrifices to other gods shall be devoted to destruction. 20 And you shall not wrong or oppress a foreign resident, for you were foreign residents in the land of Egypt. 21 You shall not mistreat any widow or orphan. 22 For if you do mistreat them and they do cry to me, I will surely hear their cry, 23 and I shall become angry, and I will kill you with the sword, and your wives shall be widows, and your children orphans.
24 If you lend money to any of my people, to the poor of your people, you shall not act as a creditor to him, and you shall not impose on him [the money as] interest. 25 If ever you take your neighbor’s cloak as security for a loan, you shall return it to him before the sun goes down, 26 for that is his only covering; it is his clothing for his body. What [else] shall he sleep in? And when he cries to me, I will hear, for I am gracious. 27 You shall not insult God, nor curse a ruler of your people. 28 You shall not delay offering from the fullness [of your harvest] and from the outflow [of your presses]. You shall give me the firstborn of your sons. 29 You shall do the same with your oxen and with your sheep. Seven days it shall be with its mother, and on the eighth day you shall give it to me. 30 And you shall be men consecrated to me; therefore you shall not eat any meat torn by animals in the field. You shall surely throw it away.
1 You shall not spread a false report. Do not join forces with the wicked to be an unrighteous witness. 2 You shall not follow a crowd to do evil, neither shall you speak in a case to side with a crowd to distort [justice], 3 neither shall you favor a poor man in his lawsuit.
4 If you meet your enemy’s ox, or his donkey, or any animal of his wandering away, you shall surely bring it back to him. 5 If you see the donkey of one who hates you lying under its load, and you would refrain from helping it, you shall surely help him with it. 6 You shall not distort the justice [due] to your poor in his lawsuit. 7 Stay away from a false charge and you will be innocent. And do not kill the righteous, for I will not acquit the wicked. 8 And you shall take no bribe, for a bribe blinds the eyes of those who have sight, and perverts the words of the righteous. 9 And you shall not oppress a foreign resident, for you know the heart of a foreign resident, because you were foreign residents in the land of Egypt.
10 And six years you shall sow your land, and shall gather in its produce, 11 but the seventh [year] you shall let it rest and lie fallow, so that the poor of your people may eat, and the animals of the field shall eat what they leave. You shall do the same with your vineyards and with your olive orchards. 12 Six days you shall do your work, and on the seventh day you shall rest, so that your male servant, or your female servant, and all your cattle, and the foreign resident may be refreshed as well as you. 13 And you shall keep all that I have said to you, and make no mention of the name of other gods, nor let it be heard out of your mouth.
14 You shall celebrate a festival for me three times a year. 15 You shall keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, as I commanded you, at the time appointed in the month of the ears of grain for in it you came out from Egypt. And no one shall appear in my presence empty-handed. 16 And the Feast of Harvest, the firstfruits of the crops you sow in the field, and the Feast of Ingathering, at the end of the year, when you gather in your harvest from the field. 17 Three times in the year all your males shall be seen with the front of the ark of Shema. 18 You shall not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leavened bread, neither shall the fat of my feast remain all night until the morning. 19 You shall bring the first of the firstfruits of your ground into the house of Shema your God. You shall not boil a young goat in its mother’s milk, for whoever does so is like one who sacrifices while abandoning (God’s commandments), and it is a transgression against the God of Jacob.
20 Look, I send my angel ahead of you to guard you on the way and to bring you to the place that I have prepared. 21 Pay attention in his presence and obey his voice. Do not rebel against him, for he will not pardon your transgression, for my name is in him. 22 But if you shall indeed obey my voice and do all that I speak, then I will be an enemy to your enemies and an adversary to your adversaries. 23 For my angel shall go ahead of you and bring you in to the Canaanite, and the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Girgashite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite, and I will cut them off. 24 You shall not bow down to their gods, nor serve them, nor imitate their practices, but you shall utterly overthrow them and smash their pillars. 25 And you shall serve Shema your God and he will bless your bread and your water, and I will take sickness away from among you. 26 And no one shall miscarry or be unable to bear young in your land. I will give you your full number of days. 27 And I will send my terror ahead of you, and will kill all the people [against] whom you shall come, and I will make all your enemies turn their backs to you.
28 And I will send the hornet ahead of you, which shall drive out the Canaanite, and the Amorite, and the Hittite and the Girgashite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite from your path. 29 I will not drive them out from your path in one year, so that the land does not become deserted and the wild animals multiply and threaten you. 30 Little by little I will drive them out from your path, until you have increased and inherit the land. 31 And I will set your border from the sea of Sof to the Sea of the Philistines, and from the wilderness to the river, for I will deliver the inhabitants of the land into your hand, and I shall drive them out from your path. 32 You shall make no covenant with them and their gods. 33 They shall not live in your land, so that they do not make you sin against me, for if you serve their gods, they will surely be a trap to you.”
1 And it was said to Moses: “Come up to Shema, you and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar, and seventy of the elders of Israel and worship from a distance. 2 And Moses alone shall come near to Shema, but they shall not come near, neither shall the people go up with him.” 3 And Moses came and told the people all the words of Shema and all the rules. And all the people answered with one voice and said: “All the words which Shema has spoken we will do.” 4 And Moses wrote all the words of Shema. And he got up early in the morning and built an altar at the foot of the mountain and twelve stones, according to the twelve tribes of Israel. 5 And he sent young men of the children of Israel, who offered burned offerings and sacrificed peace offerings of young bulls to Shema. 6 And Moses took half of the blood and put it in basins, and he sprinkled half of the blood on the altar. 7 And he took the book of the covenant and read it aloud to the people. And they said: “All that Shema has spoken we will hear and do.” 8 And Moses took the blood and sprinkled it on the people, and said: “Here is the blood of the covenant, which Shema has made with you concerning all these words.” 9 Then Moses, and Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar, and seventy of the elders of Israel went up. 10 And they saw the God of Israel, and under his feet there was something like a sapphire pavement, as clear as the sky itself. 11 And he did not lay his hand on the most distant [men] of the children of Israel. And they saw God, and ate and drank.
12 And Shema said to Moses: “Come up to me on the mountain and be there, and I will give you the tablets of stones, [and] the law and the commandment, which I have written for their instruction.” 13 And Moses got up, and so did Joshua his servant, and Moses went up into the mountain of God. 14 And he said to the elders: “Wait here for us until we return to you. Look, Aaron and Hur are with you. Whoever has a lawsuit, let him go to them.” 15 And Moses went up on the mountain, and the cloud covered the mountain. 16 And the glory of Shema settled on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it six days. And on the seventh day he called to Moses from the middle of the cloud. 17 And the appearance of the glory of Shema was like devouring fire on the top of the mountain in front of the children of Israel. 18 And Moses entered into the middle of the cloud, and went up on the mountain. And Moses was in the mountain forty days and forty nights.
1 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: 2 “Speak to the children of Israel, to bring me an offering. You shall receive my offering from every man whose heart moves him to give. 3 And this is the offering which you shall receive from them: gold, silver, and bronze, 4 blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine linen, and goats’ [hair], 5 and rams’ skins dyed red, and black skins, and acacia wood, 6 and oil for the lamps, and spices for the anointing oil, and for the sweet incense, 7 and onyx stones, and stones to be set, for the ephod and for the breastplate. 8 And make me a sanctuary, so that I may live among you. 9 You shall make [it] according to everything I show you on the mountain: the pattern of the tabernacle, and the pattern of all its furniture.
10 And you shall make an ark of acacia wood. Its length [shall be] two cubits and a half, its width a cubit and a half, and its height a cubit and a half. 11 And you shall overlay it with pure gold, you shall overlay it inside and outside, and you shall make for it a molding of gold around [it]. 12 And you shall cast four rings of gold for it and put them on its four feet, and two rings shall be on the one side of it, and two rings on the other side of it. 13 And you shall make poles of acacia wood and overlay them with gold. 14 And you shall put the poles into the rings on the sides of the ark to carry the ark with them. 15 The poles shall be in the rings of the ark; they shall not be taken from it. 16 And you shall put into the ark the testimony that I shall give you.
17 And you shall make a cover of pure gold. Its length [shall be] two cubits and a half, and its width a cubit and a half. 18 And you shall make two cherubim of gold; you shall make them with hammered work; on the two ends of the ark-cover 19 they shall be made. One cherub at the one end, and one cherub at the other end. You shall make the cherubim [of one piece] with the ark-cover on its two ends. 20 And the cherubim shall spread out their wings upward, covering the ark-cover with their wings, with their faces toward one another; the faces of the cherubim shall be toward the ark-cover. 21 And you shall put the ark-cover on the top of the ark, and in the ark you shall put the testimony. 22 And there I will meet with you, and I will speak with you from above the ark-cover, from between the two cherubim that are on the ark of the testimony, about everything which I will command you for the children of Israel.
23 And you shall make a table of acacia wood, its length shall be two cubits, its width a cubit, and its height a cubit and a half. 24 And you shall overlay it with pure gold, and make for it a molding of gold around [it]. 25 And you shall make for it a border a handbreadth wide around [it], and you shall make a golden molding for its border around [it]. 26 And you shall make for it four rings of gold and put the rings in the four corners that are on its four feet. 27 The rings shall be close to the border, [for] places for the poles to carry the table. 28 And you shall make the poles of acacia wood, and overlay them with gold. And they shall carry the table with them. 29 And you shall make its dishes, and its spoons, and its bowls, and its pitchers, with which one shall pour drink offerings; you shall make them of pure gold. 30 And you shall place on the table the bread of the Presence in my presence always.
31 And you shall make a lampstand of pure gold; you shall make the lampstand with hammered work, its bases, its shafts, its cups, its ornamental buds, and its flowers, shall be [of one piece] with it. 32 And there shall be six branches going out of its sides; three branches of the lampstand out of the one side of it, and three branches of the lampstand out of the other side of it; 33 three cups made like almond-blossoms in one branch, a ornamental bud and a flower, and three cups made like almond-blossoms in the other branch, a ornamental bud and a flower; so you shall make for the six branches going out of the lampstand. 34 And in the lampstand four cups made like almond-blossoms, [with] their ornamental buds and their flowers; 35 and a ornamental bud under two branches [of one piece] with it, and a ornamental bud under two branches [of one piece] with it, and a ornamental bud under two branches [of one piece] with it, for the six branches going out of the lampstand. 36 Their ornamental buds and their branches shall be [of one piece] with it; all of it a single hammered piece of pure gold. 37 And you shall make seven lamps for it. And you shall light the lamps, [so that] they give light in front of it. 38 And its wick trimmers and its trays for wick trimmings [shall be] of pure gold. 39 You shall make it and all these vessels from a talent of pure gold. 40 And see that you make [them] according to their pattern, which was shown to you on the mountain.
1 Also, you shall make the tabernacle [with] ten curtains of fine twisted linen, blue, and purple, and scarlet; you shall make them [with] cherubim made by a skilled craftsman. 2 The length of each curtain shall be twenty-eight cubits, and the width of each curtain four cubits; all the curtains shall have the same dimensions. 3 And five curtains shall be joined together to one another, and [the other] five curtains shall be joined to one another. 4 And you shall make loops of blue on the edge of one curtain, in the edge of the [first] set, and you shall do the same in the edge of the outermost curtain in the second set. 5 You shall make fifty loops in the one curtain, and fifty loops in the edge of the curtain in the second set; the loops shall be opposite one another. 6 And you shall make fifty clasps of gold, and join the curtains to one another with the clasps, and the tabernacle shall be one.
7 And you shall make curtains of goats’ [hair] for a tent over the tabernacle; you shall make eleven curtains. 8 The length of each curtain [shall be] thirty cubits, and the width of each curtain four cubits; the eleven curtains shall have the same dimensions. 9 And you shall join five curtains by themselves, and six curtains by themselves, and shall double over the sixth curtain at the front of the tent. 10 And you shall make fifty loops on the edge of the outermost curtain in the first set, and you shall make fifty loops on the edge of the second joining curtain. 11 And you shall make fifty clasps of bronze, and put the clasps into the loops, and join the tent together, so that it may be one. 12 And the overhanging part that remains of the curtains of the tent, the half curtain that remains, shall hang to the back of the tabernacle. 13 And the cubit on the one side, and the cubit on the other side, which remains in the length of the curtains of the tent, shall hang to the sides of the tabernacle on this side and on that side, to cover it. 14 And you shall make a covering for the tent of rams’ skins dyed red and a covering of black skins above.
15 And you shall make the boards for the tabernacle of acacia wood, upright. 16 The length of each board [shall be] ten cubits, [and] its width a cubit and a half. 17 Each board [shall] have two projecting joints, joined one to another; you shall do the same for all the boards of the tabernacle. 18 And you shall make the boards for the tabernacle: twenty boards for the south side southward. 19 And you shall make forty sockets of silver under the twenty boards; two sockets under one board for its two pins, and two sockets under another board for its two pins. 20 And for the second side of the tabernacle, on the north side, you shall make twenty boards, 21 and their forty sockets of silver; two sockets under one board, and two sockets under another board. 22 And for the rear of the tabernacle westward you shall make six boards. 23 And you shall make two boards for the corners of the tabernacle in the rear. 24 And they shall match at the bottom; they shall also match toward the top, at the first ring. It shall be this way for both of them; they shall be for the two corners. 25 And there shall be eight boards, and their sockets of silver, sixteen sockets; two sockets for each board.
26 And you shall make bars of acacia wood, five for the boards of the one side of the tabernacle, 27 and five bars for the boards of the other side of the tabernacle, and five bars for the boards of the side of the tabernacle, for the rear westward. 28 And the middle bar in the middle of the boards shall pass through from end to end. 29 And you shall overlay the boards with gold, and make their rings of gold for places for the bars, and you shall overlay the bars with gold. 30 And you shall set up the tabernacle according to the design which you were shown on the mountain.
31 And you shall make a veil of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twisted linen; they shall make it with cherubim, the work of a skilled craftsman. 32 And you shall hang it on four pillars of acacia overlaid with gold; their hooks shall be of gold, on four sockets of silver. 33 And you shall hang up the veil under the clasps, and shall bring the ark of the testimony in there behind the veil, and the veil shall separate the holy [place] from the most holy for you. 34 And you shall put the ark-cover on the ark of the testimony in the most holy place. 35 And you shall set the table outside the veil, and the lampstand opposite the table on the side of the tabernacle toward the south. And you shall put the table on the north side. And you shall make an altar to burn incense on; you shall make it of acacia wood. Its length [shall be] a cubit, and its width a cubit; it shall be square, and its height [shall be] two cubits. Its horns shall be [of one piece] with it. And you shall overlay it with pure gold, its top, and its sides around [it], and its horns. And you shall make for it a molding of gold around [it]. And you shall make two golden rings for it under its molding; you shall make them on its two ribs, on its two sides. And they shall be for places for poles with which to carry it. And you shall make the poles of acacia wood, and overlay them with gold. And you shall put it in front of the veil that is by the ark of the testimony, where I will meet with you. And Aaron shall burn incense of sweet spices on it every morning; when he tends the lamps, he shall burn it. And when Aaron lights the lamps at twilight, he shall burn it, incense offered continually in the presence of Shema throughout your generations. You shall offer no unauthorized incense on it, or burned offering, or grain offering, and you shall pour no drink offering on it. And Aaron shall make atonement on its horns once a year; with the blood of the sin offering of atonement he shall make atonement for it once a year throughout your generations. It is most holy to Shema.
36 And you shall make a screen for the entrance of the tent of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twisted linen, the work of the embroiderer. 37 And you shall make for the screen five pillars of acacia, and overlay them with pure gold; their hooks [shall be] of gold, and you shall cast five sockets of bronze for them.
1 And you shall make an altar of acacia wood, five cubits long, and five cubits wide; the altar shall be square and its height shall be three cubits. 2 And you shall make horns for it on its four corners; its horns shall be [of one piece] with it, and you shall overlay it with bronze. 3 And you shall make pots for it to receive its ashes, and its shovels, and its basins, and its meat forks, and its firepans; you shall make all its vessels of bronze. 4 And you shall make a grating for it, a network of bronze, and on the net you shall make four bronze rings in its four corners. 5 And you shall put it under the ledge around the altar, so that the net may reach halfway up the altar. 6 And you shall make poles for the altar, poles of acacia wood, and overlay them with bronze. 7 And you shall put the poles into the rings, and the poles shall be on the two sides of the altar, when carrying it. 8 You shall make it hollow with planks as it has been shown to you on the mountain, and they shall make it that way.
9 And you shall make the courtyard of the tabernacle; for the south side southward there shall be hangings for the courtyard of fine twisted linen one hundred cubits long for one side. 10 Its pillars shall be twenty and their sockets twenty, of bronze; their hooks and their bands shall be of silver. 11 And likewise for the north side in length [there shall be] hangings one hundred cubits, their pillars twenty, and their sockets twenty, of bronze; their hooks and their bands, of silver. 12 And for the width of the courtyard on the west side [there shall be] hangings of fifty cubits; their pillars ten and their sockets ten, of bronze. 13 And the width of the courtyard on the east side eastward shall be fifty cubits. 14 The hangings shall be fifteen cubits long for the one side [of the gate]; their pillars three and their sockets three, of bronze. 15 And the hangings for the other side shall be fifteen cubits long; their pillars three and their sockets three, of bronze. 16 And for the gate of the courtyard there shall be a screen twenty cubits long, of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twisted linen, the work of the embroiderer; their pillars four and their sockets four, of bronze. 17 All the pillars of the courtyard around [it] shall be banded with silver; their hooks of silver and their sockets of bronze. 18 The length of the courtyard [shall be] one hundred cubits, and the width fifty cubits, and the height five cubits, of fine twisted linen, and their sockets of bronze. 19 And you shall make all the equipment of the tabernacle for all its service, and all its pegs and all the pegs of the courtyard [shall be] of bronze. And you shall make garments of blue, and purple, and scarlet to serve in them in the holy [place].
20 And you shall command the children of Israel to bring you pure oil from pressed olives for the light, to cause a fire to burn continually. 21 In the tent of meeting, outside the veil which is in front of the testimony, Aaron and his sons shall keep it in order from evening to morning in the presence of Shema. [It shall be] a statute forever throughout your generations by the children of Israel.
1 Then bring near to you Aaron your brother, and his sons with him, from among the children of Israel, so that he may serve me as priest— Aaron, Nadab, and Abihu, Eleazar, and Ithamar, Aaron’s sons. 2 And you shall make holy clothes for Aaron your brother, for glory and for praise. 3 And you shall speak to all the skilled people, whom I have filled with the spirit of wisdom, so that they make Aaron’s garments to consecrate him, so that he may serve me as priest. 4 And these are the garments which they shall make: a breastplate, and an ephod, and a robe, [and] a tunic with a checkered pattern, a turban, and a sash, and they shall make holy garments for Aaron your brother, and his sons, so that he may serve me as priest. 5 And they shall take from the gold, and from the blue, and from the purple, and from the scarlet, and from the fine linen.
6 And they shall make the ephod of gold, of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twisted linen, the work of the skilled craftsman. 7 It shall have two joined shoulder pieces; it shall be joined together at its two ends. 8 And the skillfully woven band, which is on it, shall be made like it and be [of one piece] with it, of gold, of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twisted linen. 9 And you shall take the two onyx stones, and engrave on them the names of the children of Israel; 10 six of their names on the one stone, and the names of the six that remain on the other stone, according to their [order of] birth. 11 With the work of an engraver in stone, [like] the engravings of a seal, you shall engrave the two stones, according to the names of the children of Israel; you shall enclose them in settings of gold filigree. 12 And you shall put the two stones on the shoulder pieces of the ephod; they are stones of remembrance for the children of Israel, and Aaron shall carry their names in the presence of Shema on his two shoulder pieces as a reminder. 13 And you shall make settings of gold filigree, 14 and two chains of pure gold; [like] cords you shall make them of twisted work; and you shall put the twisted chains on the settings.
15 And you shall make a breastplate of judgment, the work of the skilled craftsman; like the work of the ephod you shall make it; of gold, of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twisted linen, you shall make it. 16 It shall be square [and] folded double; its length shall be a span, and its width a span. 17 And you shall set in it settings of stones, four rows [of stones]: a row of sardius, topaz, and carbuncle [shall be] the first row; 18 and the second row an emerald, a sapphire, and a diamond; 19 and the third row a jacinth, an agate, and an amethyst; 20 and the fourth row a beryl, an onyx, and a jasper; they shall be enclosed in settings of gold filigree. 21 And the stones shall be according to the names of the children of Israel, twelve, according to their names; [like] the engravings of a seal, each with its own name, they shall be for the twelve tribes.
22 And you shall make on the breastplate chains like cords, of twisted work of pure gold. 23 And you shall make on the breastplate two settings of gold and two rings of gold, and shall put the rings on the ends of the breastplate. 24 And you shall put the two twisted chains of gold in the two rings on the ends of the breastplate. 25 And the [other] two ends of the two twisted chains you shall put on the two settings, and put them on the shoulder pieces of the ephod in its front. 26 And you shall make two rings of gold, and you shall put them on the two ends of the breastplate, on its edge, which is on the inside next to the ephod. 27 And you shall make two rings of gold, and shall put them on the two shoulder pieces of the ephod underneath, in its front, close by its seam, above the skillfully woven band of the ephod. 28 And they shall fasten the breastplate by its ring to the ring of the ephod with a cord of blue, so that it may be on the skillfully woven band of the ephod, and that the breastplate will not be detached from the ephod. 29 And Aaron shall carry the names of the children of Israel in the breastplate of judgment over his heart, when he goes into the holy [place], as a reminder in the presence of Shema continually. 30 And you shall make the Urim and the Thummim, and you shall put on the breastplate of judgment the Urim and the Thummim, and they shall be over Aaron’s heart when he goes into the presence of Shema, and Aaron shall carry the judgment of the children of Israel over his heart in the presence of Shema continually.
31 And you shall make the robe of the ephod all of blue. 32 And it shall have a hole for the head in the middle; it shall have a binding of woven work around its hole, like the hole of a garment, so that it may not tear. 33 And you shall make on its hem pomegranates of blue, and of purple, and of scarlet, and fine twisted linen, around its hem, and bells of gold between them around [it]; 34 a golden bell and a pomegranate, a golden bell and a pomegranate, on the hem of the robe around [it]. 35 And it shall be on Aaron when he serves, and its sound shall be heard when he goes in to the holy [place] in the presence of Shema, and when he comes out, so that he does not die.
36 And you shall make a plate of pure gold, and engrave on it, [like] the engravings of a seal “Holy to Shema.” 37 And you shall put it on a cord of blue, and it shall be on the turban; it shall be on the front of the turban. 38 And it shall be on Aaron’s forehead, and Aaron shall bear responsibility for the sin of the holy things, which the children of Israel shall consecrate in all their holy gifts. And it shall always be on his forehead, so that they may be accepted in the presence of Shema. 39 And you shall weave the tunic with a checkered pattern of fine linen, and you shall make a turban of fine linen, and you shall make a sash, the work of the embroiderer. 40 And for Aaron’s sons you shall make tunics, and you shall make for them sashes, and you shall make caps for them, for glory and for beauty. 41 And you shall put them on Aaron your brother, and on his sons with him, and shall anoint them, and consecrate them, and make holy them, so that they may serve me as priests. 42 And you shall make them linen undergarments to cover [their] naked bodies; they shall reach from the waist to the thighs. 43 And they shall be on Aaron, and on his sons, when they go into the tent of meeting, or when they come near to the altar to serve in the holy [place], so that they do not incur guilt and die. It [shall be] a statute forever to him and to his offspring after him.
1 And this is the thing that you shall do to them to make holy them, to serve me as priests: take one young bull and two rams without blemish, 2 and unleavened bread, and unleavened cakes mixed with oil, and you shall make unleavened wafers from fine wheat flour. 3 And you shall put them in one basket, and bring them in the basket with the bull and the two rams. 4 And you shall bring Aaron and his sons to the entrance of the tent of meeting, and wash them with water. 5 And you shall take the garments and put the tunic on Aaron, and you shall fasten a sash around him, and put on him the robe, and put on him the ephod and the breastplate, and fasten the skillfully woven band of the ephod around him. 6 And you shall set the turban on his head, and put the holy crown on the turban.
7 Then you shall take the anointing oil and pour it on his head and anoint him. 8 And you shall bring his sons and put tunics on them. 9 And you shall fasten sashes around Aaron and his sons, and tie caps on them. And they shall have the priesthood by a statute forever. And you shall consecrate Aaron and his sons. 10 And you shall bring the bull into the presence of Shema, at the entrance of the tent of meeting. And Aaron and his sons shall lay their hands on the head of the bull. 11 And you shall kill the bull in the presence of Shema at the entrance of the tent of meeting. 12 And you shall take some of the blood of the bull and put [it] on the horns of the altar with your finger, and you shall pour out all the blood at the base of the altar. 13 And you shall take all the fat that covers the internal organs, and the appendage of the liver, and the two kidneys, and the fat that is on them, and burn them on the altar. 14 But you shall burn the meat of the bull and its skin and its dung with fire outside the camp; it is a sin offering.
15 You shall also take one of the rams, and Aaron and his sons shall lay their hands on the head of the ram. 16 And you shall kill the ram, and you shall take its blood and sprinkle it on the altar all around. 17 And you shall cut the ram into pieces, and wash its internal organs and its legs, and put them with its pieces and its head. 18 And you shall burn the whole ram on the altar; it is a burned offering to Shema; it is a pleasing aroma, an offering made by fire to Shema.
19 And you shall take the other ram, and Aaron and his sons shall lay their hands on the head of the ram. 20 Then you shall kill the ram, and take some of its blood, and put [it] on the tip of the right ear of Aaron, and on the tip of the right ear of his sons, and on the thumb of their right hand, and on the big toe of their right foot, and sprinkle the blood against the altar all around. 21 « » 22 Also you shall take the fat from the ram, the fat tail, and the fat that covers the internal organs, and the appendage of the liver, and the two kidneys, and the fat that is on them, and the right thigh, for it is a ram of consecration, 23 and one loaf of bread, and one cake of oiled bread, and one wafer, out of the basket of unleavened bread that is in the presence of Shema. 24 And you shall put the whole on the hands of Aaron and on the hands of his sons, and shall wave them as a wave offering in the presence of Shema. 25 And you shall take them from their hands, and burn them on the altar on the burned offering, for a pleasing aroma; it is an offering made by fire to Shema.
26 And you shall take the breast from Aaron’s ram of consecration, and wave it as a wave offering in the presence of Shema, and it shall be your portion. 27 And you shall consecrate the breast of the wave offering and the thigh of the raised offering, which is waved and which is raised up, of the ram of consecration, of what is for Aaron, and of what is for his sons. 28 And it shall be for Aaron and his sons as a due forever from the children of Israel, for it is a raised offering; and it shall be a raised offering from the children of Israel of the sacrifices of their peace offerings, their wave offering to Shema. And you shall take some of the anointing oil and of the blood that is on the altar, and sprinkle it on Aaron, and on his garments, and on his sons, and on the garments of his sons with him. And he shall be made holy, and his garments, and his sons, and his sons’ garments with him.
29 And the holy garments of Aaron shall be for his sons after him, to be anointed in them and to be consecrated in them. 30 The son who succeeds him as priest shall wear them for seven days, when he comes into the tent of meeting to serve in the holy place. 31 And you shall take the ram of consecration and boil its flesh in a holy place. 32 And Aaron and his sons shall eat the flesh of the ram and the bread that is in the basket. At the entrance of the tent of meeting, 33 they shall eat those things with which atonement was made, to consecrate them with these offerings [and] to make holy them, but an outsider shall not eat of them, because they are holy. 34 And if any of the flesh of the consecration, or of the bread, remains until the morning, then you shall burn the remainder with fire; it shall not be eaten, because it is holy. 35 You shall do this to Aaron and to his sons, according to all that I have commanded you; seven days you shall consecrate them, 36 and every day you shall offer the bull of sin offering for atonement, and you shall purify the altar when you make atonement for it, and you shall anoint it to make holy it. 37 Seven days you shall make atonement for the altar and make holy it, and the altar shall be most holy; whatever touches the altar shall be holy.
38 Now this is what you shall offer on the altar: two lambs a year old day by day continually, a continual burned offering. 39 You shall offer the one lamb in the morning, and you shall offer the other lamb at twilight. 40 And with the one lamb a tenth part [of an ephah] of fine flour mixed with the fourth part of a hin of oil from pressed olives, and the fourth part of a hin of wine for a drink offering. 41 And you shall offer the other lamb at twilight, you shall prepare it with the same grain offering and drink offering as in the morning, for a pleasing aroma, an offering made by fire to Shema. 42 [It shall be] a continual burned offering throughout your generations at the entrance of the tent of meeting in the presence of Shema, where I will meet with you, to speak there to you. 43 And there I will be ready for the children of Israel, to seek me, and [the tabernacle] shall be made holy by my glory. 44 And I will make the tent of meeting and the altar holy; I will also make Aaron and his sons holy to serve me as priests. 45 And I will live among the children of Israel and will be their God. 46 And they shall know that I am Shema their God that brought them out of the land of Egypt so that I might live among them; I am Shema their God.”

17 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: 18 “You shall also make a basin of bronze with a base of bronze for washing. And you shall put it between the tent of meeting and the altar, and you shall put water in it. 19 And Aaron and his sons shall wash their hands and their feet there. 20 When they go into the tent of meeting, they shall wash with water, so that they may not die. Or when they come near to the altar to serve, to burn an offering made by fire to Shema, 21 they shall wash their hands and their feet, so that they may not die, and it shall be a statute forever to them, to him and to his offspring throughout their generations.”
22 Also Shema spoke to Moses, saying: 23 “Also take for yourself the finest spices: five hundred [shekels] of liquid myrrh, and half as much sweet cinnamon, [that is,] two hundred and fifty, and of aromatic cane two hundred and fifty, 24 and of cassia five hundred, according to the shekel of the sanctuary, and a hin of olive oil. 25 And you shall make of these a holy anointing oil, a perfume blended using the skill of the perfumer; it shall be a holy anointing oil. 26 And you shall anoint with it the tent of meeting and the ark of the testimony, 27 the table and all its vessels, the lampstand and all its vessels, the altar of incense, 28 and the altar of burned offering with all its vessels, the basin and its base. 29 And you shall consecrate them so that they may be most holy; whatever touches them shall be holy. 30 And you shall anoint Aaron and his sons, and make holy them, so that they may serve me as priests. 31 And you shall speak to the children of Israel, saying, ‘This shall be a holy anointing oil to me throughout your generations. 32 It shall not be poured on a human body, neither shall you make any like it, according to its composition; it is holy, and it shall be holy to you. 33 Whoever compounds any like it, or whoever puts any of it on an outsider, he shall be cut off from his people.’”
34 And Shema spoke to Moses saying: “Take for yourself sweet spices, stacte, and onycha, and galbanum, sweet spices with pure frankincense; there shall be an equal amount of each, 35 and you shall make incense of it, a perfume using the skill of the perfumer, mixed, pure [and] holy. 36 And you shall grind some of it very finely, and put some of it in front of the testimony in the tent of meeting where I will meet with you; it shall be most holy to you. 37 And you shall not make incense of this same composition for yourselves; it shall be holy to you for Shema. 38 Whoever makes anything like it to enjoy its smell shall be cut off from his people.”
1 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: 2 “See, I have called by name Bezalel the son of Uri the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah. 3 And I have filled him with the spirit of God with wisdom, in understanding, with knowledge, and all craftsmanship, 4 and to design skilled work, to work in gold, and in silver, and in bronze, 5 and in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood, to work in every kind of craftsmanship. 6 And I, look, I have appointed with him Oholiab, the son of Ahisamach, of the tribe of Dan. And I have put wisdom in the hearts of all the skilled people, so that they may make all that I have commanded you: 7 the tent of meeting, and the ark of the testimony, [and] the ark-cover that is on it, and all the furnishings of the tent, 8 the table and all its vessels, [and] the pure lampstand with all its vessels, [and] the altar of incense, 9 and the altar of burned offering with all its vessels, [and] the basin and its base, 10 the finely worked garments, and the holy garments for Aaron the priest, and the garments of his sons, to serve as priests, 11 [and] the anointing oil, and the incense of sweet spices for the holy [place]; according to all that I have commanded you they shall do.”
12 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: 13 “Speak also to the children of Israel, saying, ‘Above all you shall keep my Sabbaths, for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations, so that [you] may know that I am Shema who makes holy you. 14 You shall keep the Sabbath because it is holy to you; everyone that profanes it shall surely be put to death, for whoever does any work on it, that person shall be cut off from among his people. 15 Work shall be done for six days, but the seventh day is a Sabbath of complete rest, holy to Shema; whoever does any work on the Sabbath day shall surely be put to death. 16 Therefore the children of Israel shall keep the Sabbath observing the Sabbath throughout their generations for a lasting covenant. 17 It is a sign between me and the children of Israel forever, for in six days Shema made heaven and earth, and on the seventh day he rested and was refreshed.’”
18 And he gave to Moses, when he finished speaking with him on Mount Sinai, the two tablets of the testimony, tablets of stone, written with the finger of God.
1 And when the people saw that Moses was slow to come down from the mountain, the people gathered around Aaron, and said to him: “Get up, make us gods, which shall go ahead of us. For [as for] this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.” 2 And Aaron said to them: “Take off the golden rings which are in the ears of your wives, of your sons, and of your daughters, and bring [them] to me.” 3 And all the people took off the golden rings which were in their ears and brought [them] to Aaron. 4 And he received them from their hand and fashioned [them] in a mold and made a cast-metal calf, and they said: “These are your gods, Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt.” 5 And when Aaron saw [this], he built an altar in front of it, and Aaron announced and said: “Tomorrow shall be a festival to Shema.” 6 And they got up early the next day and offered burned offerings and brought peace offerings. And the people sat down and ate and drank and got up to play.
7 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: “Go down, for your people, whom you brought up out of the land of Egypt, have corrupted themselves. 8 They have quickly turned away from the way which I commanded them. They have made themselves a cast-metal calf, and have worshiped it, and have sacrificed to it, and said, ‘These are your gods, Israel, which brought you up out of the land of Egypt.’”
9 And Shema said to Moses: “I have seen this people and, look, it is a stubborn people. 10 Now therefore let me alone, so that I may become angry with them and I may consume them, and I will make of you a great nation. And Shema was very angry with Aaron [wanting] to destroy him, and Moses prayed for Aaron. 11 And Moses pleaded with Shema his God, and said: “Shema, why are you angry with your people, whom you have brought out of Egypt with great power and with an outstretched arm? 12 Why should the Egyptians speak, saying: ‘with evil intent he brought them out to kill them in the mountains and to consume them from the face of the earth’? Turn from your fierce anger and relent from this evil against your people. 13 Remember Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, your servants, to whom you swore by yourself, and said to them, ‘I will greatly multiply your offspring to be as numerous as the stars of heaven, and all this land that I have spoken of I will give to your offspring, and they shall inherit it forever.’” 14 And Shema relented from the evil which he said he would do to his people.
15 And Moses turned and went down from the mountain with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand, tablets that were written on both their sides; they were written on one side and on the other. 16 And the tablets were the work of God, and the writing was the writing of God, engraved on the tablets. 17 And when Joshua heard the noise of the people that it was evil, he said to Moses: “There is a noise of war in the camp.” 18 And he said: “It is not the sound of a victorious company, or the sound of a defeated company. It is the sound of sins that I hear.” 19 And as soon as he came near the camp and saw the calf and the dancing, Moses became angry, and he threw the tablets out of his hands and broke them at the foot of the mountain. 20 And he took the calf which they had made and burned it with fire, and ground it to powder and scattered it on the water and made the children of Israel drink [it].
21 And Moses said to Aaron: “What did this people do to you that you brought a great sin on them?” 22 And Aaron said: “Do not be angry, my lord. You know the people, that they are out of control. 23 For they said to me, ‘Make us gods which shall go ahead of us, for as for this Moses, the man that brought us up out of the land of Egypt, we do not know what has become of him.’ 24 And I said to them, ‘Whoever has any gold, let them take it off.’ So they gave it to me, and I threw it into the fire, and this calf came out.” 25 And when Moses saw that the people were out of control, for Aaron had let them get out of control to diminish them in their rebellion, 26 then Moses stood in the gate of the camp and said: “Whoever is for Shema, [let him come] to me.” And all the sons of Levi gathered themselves together to him. 27 And he said to them: “Shema says this the God of Israel, ‘Each man shall put his sword on his thigh and go back and forth from gate to gate throughout the camp and each man shall kill his brother, and his companion, and his neighbor.’” 28 And the sons of Levi did according to the word of Moses, and about three thousand men from the people fell that day. 29 And Moses said: “You have consecrated yourselves today to Shema, every man against his son, and against his brother, so that he may give you a blessing today.”
30 And on the next day Moses said to the people: “You have sinned a great sin, and now I will go up to Shema; perhaps I can make atonement for your sins.” 31 And Moses returned to Shema, and said: “Look, this people have sinned a great sin and have made themselves gods of gold. 32 Yet now, if you will forgive their sin—forgive!; and if not, erase me of your book which you have written.” 33 And Shema said to Moses: “I will erase from my book whoever has sinned against me. 34 And now go, lead the people to [the place] of which I have spoken to you, and look, my angel shall go ahead of you; nevertheless on the day when I punish, I will punish them for their sin.” 35 And Shema sent a plague on the people, because they made the calf which Aaron made.
1 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: “Leave, go up from here, you and the people that you have brought up out of the land of Egypt, to the land of which I swore to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, saying, ‘To your offspring I will give it.’ 2 And I will send an angel ahead of you, and I will drive out the Canaanite, and the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Girgashite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite, 3 to a land flowing with milk and honey, for I will not go up among you for you are a stubborn people, so that I do not consume you on the way.” 4 And when the people heard these bad news, they mourned, and no one put on his ornaments.
5 And Shema said to Moses: “Say to the children of Israel, ‘You are a stubborn people; if I go up among you for one moment, I shall consume you; therefore now take off your ornaments from you, so that I may know what to do to you.’” 6 And the children of Israel stripped themselves of their ornaments from Mount Horeb onward. 7 Now Moses used to take the tent and to pitch it outside the camp, far away from the camp, and he called it the tent of meeting. And everyone who sought Shema went out to the tent of meeting, which was outside the camp. 8 And when Moses went out to the tent, all the people got up and stood, every man at his tent door, and watched Moses until he had gone into the tent. 9 And when Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud descended and stood at the entrance of the tent, and [Shema] spoke with Moses. 10 And all the people saw the pillar of cloud standing at the entrance of the tent, and all the people got up and worshiped, every man at his tent door. 11 And Shema spoke to Moses face to face, as a man speaks to his friend. And he returned to the camp, but his assistant Joshua the son of Nun, a young man, did not leave from the tent.
12 And Moses said to Shema: “See, you say to me, ‘Bring up this people,’ and you have not let me know whom you will send with me. Yet you have said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found favor in my sight.’ 13 Now therefore, please, if I have found favor in your sight, show me now your ways, so that I may know you and so that I may find favor in your sight. And consider that this nation is your people.” 14 And he said: “My presence will go [with you], and I will give you rest.” 15 And he said to him: “If it is not your presence who goes [with me], do not carry me from here. 16 For how shall it be known that I have found favor in your sight, I and your people? Look, it is in your going with us that we are distinguished, I and your people, from all the people that are on the face of the earth!”
17 And Shema said to Moses: “I will also do this thing that you have spoken, for you have found favor in my sight, and I know you by name.” 18 And he said: “Please show me your glory.” 19 And he said: “I will make all my goodness pass in front of you, and will proclaim the name of Shema in front of you, and I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and will show mercy to whom I will show mercy.” 20 And he said: “You cannot see my face, for man shall not see me and live.” 21 And Shema said: “Look, there is a place by me, and you shall stand on the rock, 22 and while my glory passes by, I will put you in the cracks of the rock, and will cover you with my hand until I have passed by. 23 And I will take away my hand, and you shall see my back, but my face shall not be seen.”
1 And Shema said to Moses: “Cut two tablets of stone like the first, and I will write on the tablets the words that were on the first tablets which you broke. 2 And be ready by the morning, and come up in the morning on Mount Sinai, and present yourself there to me on the top of the mountain. 3 And no one shall come up with you, do not let anyone be seen throughout all the mountain, and do not let the flocks or herds graze in front of that mountain.” 4 And Moses cut two tablets of stone like the first and got up early in the morning, and went up on Mount Sinai, as Shema had commanded him, and took in his hand two tablets of stone. 5 And Shema descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of Shema. 6 And Shema passed by in front of him, and proclaimed: “Shema, Shema, a God merciful and gracious, slow to anger, and abundant in faithful love and truth, 7 keeping faithful love for thousands, forgiving wrongdoing, and transgression, and sin, and he will clear the innocent, punishing the children and the grandchildren for the wrongdoing of their fathers, to the third and the fourth generation.” 8 And Moses hurried and bowed down toward the earth, and worshiped. 9 And he said: “If now I have found favor in your sight, Lord, please let the Lord go among us, for it is a stubborn people, and pardon our wrongdoings and our sins, and take us for your inheritance.”
10 And he said: “Look, I make a covenant in front of everyone. With you I will do wonders such as have never been done in all the earth or in any nation, and all the people among whom you are shall see the work of Shema, for it is an awesome thing that I do with you. 11 Observe what I command you this day. Look, I drive out from your path the Canaanite, and the Amorite, and the Hittite, and the Girgashite, and the Perizzite, and the Hivite, and the Jebusite. 12 Be careful not to make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land against whom you go, so that it does not become a trap among you. 13 You shall tear down their altars, and smash their pillars, and you shall cut down their Asherim, 14 for you shall worship no other god, for Shema, whose name is Jealous, is a jealous God, 15 so that you do not make a covenant with the inhabitants of the land, and they prostitute themselves to their gods, and sacrifice to their gods, and one of them invites you and you eat of his sacrifice, 16 and you take some of his daughters for your sons, and his daughters prostitute themselves to his gods, and make your sons prostitute themselves to their gods. 17 You shall make for yourself no cast-metal gods.
18 You shall keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread. Seven days you shall eat unleavened bread, as I commanded you, at the time appointed in the month of the ears of grain, for in it you came out from Egypt. 19 All that opens the womb is mine, and you shall [consecrate to Shema] all your male cattle, the firstborn of cow and sheep. 20 And you shall redeem the firstborn of a donkey with a lamb, and if you will not redeem it, then you shall break its neck. And you shall redeem every human firstborn among your sons. And no one shall appear in my presence empty-handed. 21 Six days you shall work, but on the seventh day you shall rest; in plowing time and in harvest you shall rest. 22 And you shall observe the Feast of Weeks, the firstfruits of wheat harvest, and the Feast of Ingathering at the year’s end. 23 All your males shall appear three times a year at the front of the ark of Shema, the God of Israel. 24 For I will drive out many nations ahead of you and enlarge your borders, and no one shall desire your land, when you go up to appear in the presence of Shema your God three times in the year. 25 You shall not offer the blood of my sacrifice with leavened bread, neither shall the sacrifice of the Feast of the Passover be left to the morning. 26 You shall bring the first of the firstfruits of your ground to the house of Shema your God. You shall not boil a young goat in its mother’s milk.”
27 And Shema said to Moses: “Write these words, for in accordance with these words I have made a covenant with you and with Israel.” 28 And he was there in the presence of Shema forty days and forty nights. He neither ate bread nor drank water. And he wrote on the tablets the words of the covenant, the Ten Commandments.
29 And when Moses came down from Mount Sinai with the two tablets of the testimony in his hand, when he came down from the mountain, Moses did not know that the skin of his face shone because of his speaking with him. 30 And when Aaron and all the children of Israel saw Moses, look, the skin of his face shone, and they were afraid to come near him. 31 And Moses called to them, and Aaron and all the rulers of the congregation returned to him, and Moses spoke to them. 32 And afterward all the children of Israel came near to him, and he commanded them all that Shema had spoken with him on Mount Sinai. 33 And when Moses had finished speaking with them, he put a veil on his face. 34 But when Moses went in into the presence of Shema to speak with him, he took the veil off until he came out, and he came out and spoke to the children of Israel everything that [Shema] commanded him. 35 And the children of Israel saw the face of Moses, that the skin of Moses’s face shone, and he put the veil on his face again, until he went in to speak with him.
1 And Moses assembled all the congregation of the children of Israel and said to them: “These are the words which Shema has commanded that you should do. 2 Work shall be done for six days, but the seventh day shall be a holy day for you, a Sabbath of complete rest to Shema; whoever does any work on it shall be put to death. 3 You shall light no fire throughout your homes on the Sabbath day.”
4 And Moses spoke to all the congregation of the children of Israel, saying: “This is the thing which Shema commanded, saying, 5 ‘Take from among you an offering to Shema; whoever is willing, let him bring Shema’s offering: gold, silver, and bronze, 6 blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine linen, and goats’ [hair], 7 and rams’ skins dyed red, and black skins, and acacia wood, 8 and oil for the light, and spices for the anointing oil and for the sweet incense, 9 and onyx stones, and stones to be set for the ephod and for the breastplate. 10 And let every skilled man among you come and make all that Shema has commanded: 11 the tabernacle, and its tent, and its covering, and its clasps, and its boards, and its bars, and its pillars, and its sockets; 12 the ark, and its poles, the ark-cover, and the veil of the screen; 13 the table, and its poles, and all its vessels, and the the bread of the Presence; 14 the lampstand for the light, and all its vessels, and the oil for the light; 15 and the altar of incense, and its poles, and the anointing oil, and the sweet incense, and the screen for the door, at the entrance of the tabernacle; 16 the altar of burned offering, with its grating of bronze, and its poles, and all its vessels, the basin and its base; 17 the hangings of the courtyard, and its pillars, and their sockets, and the screen for the gate of the courtyard; 18 and the pegs of the tabernacle, and the pegs of the courtyard, and their cords; 19 finely worked garments for serving in the holy [place], and the holy garments for Aaron the priest, and the garments of his sons to serve as priests.”
20 And all the congregation of the children of Israel left from the presence of Moses. 21 And everyone whose heart stirred him, and everyone whose spirit moved him, brought Shema’s offering for the work of the tent of meeting, and for all its service, and for the holy garments. 22 And both men and women, as many as were willing, brought brooches and earrings, seal rings, and armbands, all jewelry of gold, every [man] that offered an offering of gold to Shema. 23 And every man who had blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine linen, and goats’ [hair], and rams’ skins dyed red, and black skins, brought [them]. 24 And everyone that offered an offering of silver and bronze brought Shema’s offering, and every man who had acacia wood for work of the service, brought [it]. 25 And every skilled woman spun with her hands, and they brought what she had spun, the blue, and the purple, and the scarlet, and the fine linen. 26 And all the women whose hearts moved them to use their skill spun the goats’ [hair]. 27 And the rulers brought the onyx stones and the stones to be set for the ephod and for the breastplate, 28 and the spices, and the oil for the light, and for the anointing oil, and for the sweet incense. 29 And every man and woman, the children of Israel, whose heart made them willing to bring for all the work, which Shema had commanded to be made by Moses, brought it as their freewill offering to Shema.
30 And Moses said to the children of Israel: “See, Shema has called by name Bezalel the son of Uri the son of Hur of the tribe of Judah. 31 And he has filled him with the spirit of God, with wisdom, and with understanding, and with knowledge, and with every kind of craftsmanship; 32 and to design skilled work, to work in gold, and in silver, and in bronze, 33 and in cutting stones for setting, and in carving wood to work in every kind of skilled craft. 34 And he has given the ability to teach to both him and Oholiab the son of Ahisamach of the tribe of Dan. 35 He has filled them with skill to work in every kind of work done by the engraver, and the skilled craftsman, and the embroiderer, in blue, and in purple, and in scarlet, and in fine linen, and the weaver. They did every kind of craftsmanship and ingenious work.”
1 And Bezalel and Oholiab shall work, and every skilled man in whom Shema has put wisdom and understanding to know how to do all the service work of the sanctuary according to all that Shema has commanded.
2 And Moses called Bezalel and Oholiab and every skilled man in whose heart Shema had put wisdom, everyone whose heart stirred him up to come to the work to do it. 3 And they received from Moses all the offering which the children of Israel had brought for the service work of the sanctuary. And they continued bringing him freewill offerings every morning. 4 And all the skilled men who were doing all the work of the sanctuary brought each man from the work they were doing. 5 And they spoke to Moses, saying: “The people bring enough for the service of the work which Shema commanded to do.” 6 And Moses gave a command, and they proclaimed it throughout the camp, saying: “Let neither man nor woman do any more work for the offering of the sanctuary.” So the people stopped bringing. 7 For the materials they had was sufficient to do all the work, and they had some left over.
8 And all the skilled men were engaged in doing the work. They made the tabernacle with ten curtains of fine twisted linen, blue, and purple, and scarlet, [with] cherubim; he made them with the work of a skilled craftsman. 9 The length of each curtain was twenty-eight cubits, and the width of each curtain four cubits; all the curtains had the same dimensions. 10 And he joined five curtains to one another, and joined the [other] five curtains to one another. 11 And he made loops of blue on the edge of the outermost curtain in the first set, and he did the same in the edge of the outermost curtain in the second set. 12 He made fifty loops in the one curtain, and fifty loops in the edge of the curtain that was in the second set; the loops were opposite one another. 13 And he made fifty clasps of gold and joined the curtains to one another with the clasps; so the tabernacle was one.
14 And he made curtains of goats’ [hair] for a tent over the tabernacle; he made eleven curtains. 15 The length of each curtain was thirty cubits, and the width of each curtain four cubits; the eleven curtains had the same dimensions. 16 And he joined five curtains by themselves, and six curtains by themselves. 17 And he made fifty loops on the edge of the outermost curtain in the first set, and he made fifty loops on the edge of the second joining curtain. 18 And he made fifty clasps of bronze to join the tent together so that it might be one. 19 And he made a covering for the tent of rams’ skins dyed red and a covering of black skins above.
20 And he made the boards for the tabernacle of acacia wood standing up. 21 The length of each board [was] ten cubits, and its width a cubit and a half. 22 Each board had two projecting joints joined one to another; he did the same for all the boards of the tabernacle. 23 And he made the boards for the tabernacle; twenty boards for the south side southward. 24 And he made forty sockets of silver under the twenty boards; two sockets under one board for its two pins, and two sockets under another board for its two pins. 25 And for the second side of the tabernacle, on the north side, he made twenty boards, 26 and their forty sockets of silver; two sockets under one board and two sockets under another board. 27 And for the rear of the tabernacle westward he made six boards. 28 And he made two boards for the corners of the tabernacle in the rear. 29 And they were double at the bottom; they were also double toward the top at the first ring; he did the same for them both in the two corners. 30 And there were eight boards, and their sockets of silver, sixteen sockets; two sockets under every board.
31 And they made bars of acacia wood, five for the boards of the one side of the tabernacle, 32 and five bars for the boards of the other side of the tabernacle, and five bars for the boards of the side of the tabernacle for the rear westward. 33 And he made the middle bar to pass through in the middle of the boards from the one end to the other. 34 And he overlaid the boards with gold, and made their rings of gold [for] places for the bars, and overlaid the bars with gold.
35 And he made a veil of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twisted linen, with cherubim; he made it with the work of a skilled craftsman. 36 And he made for it four pillars of acacia and overlaid them with gold. Their hooks were of gold, and he cast for them four sockets of silver. 37 And he made a screen for the entrance of the tent, of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twisted linen, the work of the embroiderer. 38 He overlaid the capitals and bands of its five pillars and their hooks with gold, and their five sockets [were] of bronze.
1 And Bezalel made the ark of acacia wood; its length was two cubits and a half, its width a cubit and a half, and its height a cubit and a half. 2 And he overlaid it with pure gold inside and outside, and made a molding of gold to it all around. 3 And he cast for it four rings of gold in its four feet: two rings on the one side of it and two rings on its other side. 4 And he made poles of acacia wood and overlaid them with gold. 5 And he put the poles into the rings on the sides of the ark to carry the ark with them.
6 And he made an ark-cover of pure gold; its length was two cubits and a half, and its width a cubit and a half. 7 And he made two cherubim of gold; he made them with hammered work at the two ends of the ark-cover; 8 one cherub at the one end, and one cherub at the other end; he made the cherubim [of one piece] with the ark-cover at its two ends. 9 And the cherubim had their wings spread out above, covering the ark-cover with their wings, with their faces toward one another; the faces of the cherubim were toward the ark-cover.
10 And he made the table of acacia wood; its length was two cubits, its width a cubit, and its height a cubit and a half; 11 and he overlaid it with pure gold, and made for it a molding of gold all around. 12 And he made it a border of a handbreadth all around, and made a golden molding for its border all around. 13 And he cast four rings of gold, and put the rings in the four corners that were on its four feet. 14 The rings were close to the border, the places for the poles to carry the table. 15 And he made the poles of acacia wood, and overlaid them with gold to carry the table. 16 And he made the vessels which were on the table, its dishes, and its spoons, and its bowls, and its pitchers, with which to pour out, of pure gold.
17 And he made the lampstand of pure gold; he made the lampstand with hammered work; its bases [and] its shafts, its cups, its ornamental buds, and its flowers [were of one piece] with it. 18 And there were six branches going out of its sides; three branches of the lampstand out of its one side, and three branches of the lampstand out of its other side; 19 three cups made like almond blossoms in one branch, a ornamental bud and a flower, and three cups made like almond blossoms in the other branch, a ornamental bud and a flower; so for the six branches going out of the lampstand. 20 And in the lampstand [were] four cups made like almond blossoms, [with] their ornamental buds and flowers; 21 and a ornamental bud under two branches [of one piece] with it, and a ornamental bud under two branches [of one piece] with it, and a ornamental bud under two branches [of one piece] with it, for the six branches going out of it. 22 Their ornamental buds and their branches were [of one piece] with it; the whole of it was one hammered work of pure gold. 23 And he made its seven lamps, and its wick trimmers, and its trays for wick trimmings of pure gold. 24 He made it, and all its vessels, from a talent of pure gold.
25 And he made the altar of incense of acacia wood; its length was a cubit, and its width a cubit; it was square; and its height [was] two cubits; its horns were [of one piece] with it. 26 And he overlaid it with pure gold, its top, and its sides all around, and its horns; and he made for it a molding of gold all around. 27 And he made for it two golden rings under its molding, on its two ribs, on its two sides, for places for poles with which to carry it. 28 And he made the poles of acacia wood, and overlaid them with gold. 29 And he made the holy anointing oil and the pure incense of sweet spices using the skill of the perfumer.
1 And he made the altar of burned offering of acacia wood, its length was five cubits, its width five cubits, and its height three cubits. 2 And he made its horns on its four corners; its horns were [of one piece] with it, and he overlaid it with bronze. 3 And he made all the vessels of the altar, the pots, and the shovels, and the basins, and the meat forks, and the firepans; he made all its vessels of bronze. 4 And he made for the altar a grating of a network of bronze, under the ledge around its lower part, reaching halfway up. 5 And he cast four rings for the four ends of the grating of bronze, [to be] places for the poles. 6 And he made the poles of acacia wood, and overlaid them with bronze. 7 And he put the poles into the rings on the sides of the altar to carry it with them; he made it hollow with planks. 8 And he made the basin of bronze and its base of bronze, from the mirrors of the women who served at the entrance of the tent of meeting.
9 And he made the courtyard; for the south side southward the hangings of the courtyard were of fine twisted linen, one hundred cubits; 10 and its pillars were twenty, and their sockets twenty; the hooks of the pillars and their bands were of silver. 11 And for the north side one hundred cubits, their pillars twenty, and their sockets twenty of bronze; the hooks of the pillars and their bands were of silver. 12 And for the west side were hangings of fifty cubits, their pillars ten, and their sockets ten; the hooks of the pillars and their bands were of silver. 13 And for the east side eastward fifty cubits. 14 The hangings for the one side [of the gate were] fifteen cubits; their pillars three and their sockets three; 15 and so for the other side; on either side of the gate of the courtyard there were hangings of fifteen cubits; their pillars three and their sockets three. 16 All the hangings of the courtyard all around were of fine twisted linen. 17 And the sockets for the pillars were of bronze; their hooks of silver; and the overlaying of their capitals of silver; and they were fastened with silver to all the pillars of the courtyard. 18 And the screen for the gate of the courtyard was the work of the embroiderer of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twisted linen; and its length was twenty cubits, and it measured five cubits from top to bottom, corresponding to the hangings of the courtyard. 19 And their pillars were four and their sockets four of bronze; their hooks of silver, and the overlaying of their capitals and their bands of silver. 20 And all the pegs of the tabernacle and of the courtyard all around were of bronze.
21 This is the inventory of [the things for] the tabernacle, the tabernacle of the testimony, as they were numbered according to the commandment of Moses, for the service of the Levites, under the direction of Ithamar, the son of Aaron the priest. 22 And Bezalel the son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, made all that Shema commanded Moses. 23 And with him was Oholiab the son of Ahisamach of the tribe of Dan, an engraver and a skilled craftsman and an embroiderer in blue and in purple and in scarlet and in fine linen. 24 All the gold that was used for the work in all the work of the sanctuary, the gold of the offering, was twenty-nine talents and seven hundred and thirty shekels, according to the shekel of the sanctuary.
25 And the silver of those who were numbered of the congregation was one hundred talents and one thousand seven hundred and seventy-five shekels, 26 a beka per person. Half a shekel—according to the shekel of the sanctuary—for everyone who was numbered in the census, from twenty years old and older, for six hundred and three thousand five hundred and fifty [men]. 27 And the hundred talents of silver were for casting the sockets of the sanctuary and the sockets of the veil; one hundred sockets for the hundred talents, a talent for a socket. 28 And from the one thousand seven hundred and seventy-five [shekels] he made hooks for the pillars and overlaid their capitals and made bands for them.
29 And the bronze of the offering was seventy talents and two thousand four hundred shekels. 30 And with it he made the sockets to the entrance of the tent of meeting and the bronze altar and the bronze grating for the altar and all the vessels of the altar, 31 and the sockets of the courtyard all around, and the sockets of the gate of the courtyard, and all the pegs of the tabernacle, and all the pegs of the courtyard all around.
1 And of the blue, and purple, and scarlet, they made finely worked garments for serving in the holy [place], and made the holy garments for Aaron, as Shema commanded Moses.
2 And they made the ephod of gold, blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twisted linen. 3 And they beat the gold into thin plates and cut it into wires to work [it] in the blue, and in the purple, and in the scarlet, and in the fine linen, the work of the skilled craftsman. 4 He made shoulder-pieces for it, joined together; at the two ends he joined [it] together. 5 And the skillfully woven band that was on it was of the same piece [and] workmanship of gold, of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twisted linen, as Shema commanded Moses. 6 And they made the onyx stones, enclosed in settings of gold filigree, with the engravings of a seal, according to the names of the children of Israel. 7 And they put them on the shoulder-pieces of the ephod, [to be] stones of remembrance for the children of Israel, as Shema commanded Moses.
8 And they made the breastplate, the work of the skilled craftsman, like the work of the ephod of gold, of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and fine twisted linen. 9 It was square. He made the breastplate folded double, its length was a span and its width a span. 10 And they set in it four rows of stones. A row of sardius, topaz, and carbuncle was the first row; 11 and the second row, an emerald, a sapphire, and a diamond; 12 and the third row, a jacinth, an agate, and an amethyst; 13 and the fourth row, a beryl, an onyx, and a jasper; they were enclosed in settings of gold filigree. 14 And the stones were according to the names of the children of Israel, twelve, according to their names; [like] the engravings of a seal, each with its own name, for the twelve tribes.
15 And they made on the breastplate chains like cords of twisted work of pure gold. 16 And they made two settings of gold, and two gold rings, and put the two rings on the two ends of the breastplate. 17 And they put the two twisted chains of gold in the two rings at the ends of the breastplate. 18 And they put the [other] two ends of the two twisted chains on the two settings, and put them on the shoulder-pieces of the ephod, in its front. 19 And they made two rings of gold and put [them] on the two ends of the breastplate, on its edge which [was] on the inside next to the ephod. 20 And they made two rings of gold and put them on the two shoulder-pieces of the ephod, underneath in its front, close by its joining above the skillfully woven band of the ephod. 21 And they fastened the breastplate by its ring to the ring of the ephod with a cord of blue, so that it might be on the skillfully woven band of the ephod, and that the breastplate might not be detached from the ephod, as Shema commanded Moses. And they made the Urim and the Thummim, as Shema commanded Moses.
22 And they made the robe of woven work all of blue. 23 And the opening of the robe in the middle was like the opening of a coat of chain mail with a binding around its opening, so that it should not be torn. 24 And they made on the lower edges of the robe pomegranates of blue, and purple, and scarlet, and twisted linen. 25 And they made bells of pure gold, and put the bells on the lower edges of the robe all around, between the pomegranates; 26 a bell of gold and a pomegranate, a bell of gold and a pomegranate, on the lower edges of the robe all around to serve in, as Shema commanded Moses.
27 And they made the tunic of fine linen of woven work for Aaron and for his sons, 28 and the turban of fine linen, and the fine caps of fine linen, and the linen undergarments of fine twisted linen, 29 and the sash of fine twisted linen, blue, and purple, and scarlet, the work of the embroiderer, as Shema commanded Moses.
30 And they made the plate of the holy crown of pure gold, and wrote on it a writing [like] the engravings of a seal: “Holy to Shema.” 31 And they tied to it a cord of blue to fasten it on the turban above, as Shema commanded Moses.
32 In this way all the work was finished of the tabernacle, the tent of meeting, and the children of Israel did according to all that Shema commanded Moses; that is what they did. 33 And they brought the tabernacle to Moses, the tent, and all its furniture, its clasps, its boards, its bars, its pillars, and their sockets, 34 and the covering of rams’ skins dyed red, and the covering of black skins, and the veil of the screen, 35 the ark of the testimony and its poles, and the ark-cover, 36 the table, and all its vessels, and the the bread of the Presence, 37 the pure lampstand, and its lamps, the lamps to be set in order, and all its vessels, and the oil for the light, 38 and the golden altar, and the anointing oil, and the sweet incense, and the screen for the entrance of the tent; 39 and the bronze altar, and its grating of bronze, and its poles, and all its vessels, the basin and its base, 40 the hangings of the courtyard, and its pillars, and its sockets, and the screen for the gate of the courtyard, and its cords, and its pegs, and all the equipment of the work of the tabernacle, for the tent of meeting, 41 the finely worked garments for serving in the holy [place], and the holy garments for Aaron the priest, and the garments of his sons to serve as priests. 42 The children of Israel did all the work according to everything Shema commanded Moses. 43 And Moses saw all the work, and, look, they had done it; as Shema had commanded, so they had done [it], and Moses blessed them.
1 And Shema spoke to Moses, saying: 2 “On the first day of the first month you shall erect the tabernacle, the tent of meeting. 3 And you shall put in it the ark of the testimony, and you shall screen the ark with the ark-cover. 4 And you shall bring in the table, and set in order the things to be set in order on it; and you shall bring in the lampstand, and light its lamps. 5 And you shall set the golden altar for incense in front of the ark of the testimony, and put the screen of the door to the tabernacle. 6 And you shall set the altar of burned offering in front of the door of the tabernacle, the tent of meeting. 7 And you shall set the basin between the tent of meeting and the altar, and shall put water in it. 8 And you shall set up the courtyard all around, and hang up the screen of the gate of the courtyard.
9 And you shall take the anointing oil, and anoint the tabernacle, and all that is in it, and shall consecrate it, and all its furniture, and it shall be holy. 10 And you shall anoint the altar of burned offering, and all its vessels, and make holy the altar, and the altar shall be most holy. 11 And you shall anoint the basin and its base, and make holy it. 12 And you shall bring Aaron and his sons to the entrance of the tent of meeting, and shall wash them with water. 13 And you shall put the holy garments on Aaron, and you shall anoint him and make holy him, so that he may serve me as priest. 14 And you shall bring his sons, and put tunics on them; 15 and you shall anoint them as you anointed their father, so that they may serve me as priests, and their anointing shall give them an everlasting priesthood throughout their generations.” 16 And Moses did according to all that Shema commanded him; that is what he did.
17 And in the first month in the second year after they came out from Egypt, on the first day of the month, the tabernacle was set up. 18 And Moses erected the tabernacle, and laid its sockets, and set up its boards, and put in its bars, and erected its pillars. 19 And he spread the tent over the tabernacle and put the covering of the tent over it, as Shema commanded Moses.
20 And he took and put the testimony into the ark, and set the poles on the ark, and put the ark-cover on top of the ark; 21 and he brought the ark into the tabernacle, and set up the veil of the screen, and screened the ark of the testimony, as Shema commanded Moses.
22 And he put the table in the tent of meeting on the side of the tabernacle northward, outside the veil. 23 And he set the bread in order on it in the presence of Shema, as Shema commanded Moses.
24 And he put the lampstand in the tent of meeting, opposite the table, on the side of the tabernacle southward. 25 And he set up the lamps in the presence of Shema, as Shema commanded Moses.
26 And he put the golden altar in the tent of meeting in front of the veil; 27 and he burned on it incense of sweet spices in the presence of Shema, as Shema commanded Moses.
28 And he put in place the screen for the door of the tabernacle. 29 And he set the altar of burned offering in front of the door of the tabernacle, the tent of meeting, and offered on it the burned offering and the grain offering, as Shema commanded Moses.
30 And he set the basin between the tent of meeting and the altar, and put water in it for washing. 31 And Moses, Aaron, and his sons washed their hands and their feet there, 32 when they went into the tent of meeting. And when they came near to the altar, they washed, as Shema commanded Moses.
33 And he erected the courtyard around the tabernacle and the altar, and set up the screen of the gate of the courtyard. So Moses finished all the work.
34 Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of Shema filled the tabernacle. 35 And Moses was not able to enter into the tent of meeting, because the cloud rested on it, and the glory of Shema filled the tabernacle. 36 And when the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the children of Israel went onward, throughout all their journeys; 37 but if the cloud was not taken up, then they did not travel until the day that it was taken up. 38 For the cloud of Shema was on the tabernacle by day, and there was fire in it by night, in front of all the house of Israel, throughout all their journeys.
